Ka Mana‘o Nui no nā Kahu Waiwai a me ka Pouhana Message from our Trustees and CEO Aloha mai kākou, At King Lunalilo Trust, our work begins and ends with kūpuna — their well-being, their wisdom, and their role as the heart of our communities. Since our earliest days, Lunalilo Home has been enriched by the ʻike of our residents, our kūpuna. Equally important is the tireless work of our staff, who care for kūpuna throughout the day, every day. Without our staff, there would be no Lunalilo Home.

In 2023, we embarked on our huakaʻi of huliau, our journey of change. As people of the sea, we understand the importance of keeping everyone paddling together: Hoʻokahi ka ʻilau like ana.

To keep everyone paddling in the same direction, we revisited our organizational core values. Based on the strengths of different members of our care team, we developed the following five core values along with guiding language to keep us focused on a key aspect of each core value.

Aloha – Caring for everyone, even when it is hard Haʻahaʻa – Humility; willingness to do anything and everything Hoʻomanawanui – Patience and graciousness; making time for others Laulima – Many hands make light work; being a dependable team member Kūlia i Ka Nuʻu – Striving for excellence These core values are not just ideals. They are the foundation of our everyday work, to help keep all of us paddling in the same direction for the benefit of the kūpuna and ʻohana we serve.

In the second half of 2023, we expanded our reach beyond our campus on the east end of Oʻahu. With the wind-down of COVID pandemic flexibilities, we worried about kūpuna who might experience greater food insecurity. So, we launched our first new initiative since 2002: a kitchen on the Waiʻanae coast to prepare hot meals for kūpuna, to be delivered to their homes. We built relationships with Hawaiian Homestead associations in west Oʻahu. We received logistical and financial support from numerous organizations, including the Hawaiian Community Development Board, the Council for Native Hawaiian Advancement, Papa Ola Lokahi, the Queen Health System, and Kaiser Permanente. In less than six months, we stood up a new program, providing hot lunches twice a week to kūpuna from Kapōlei to Waiʻanae.

To everyone who has walked alongside us — donors, partners, families, staff, and community members — mahalo nui loa. You help us bring King Lunalilo’s legacy to life every day. Together, we paddle forward, grounded in where we’ve come from, inspired by where we’re going, and with our promise to you: Always with aloha!

Ka Makahiki Mua no ka Huliau 2023: Our First Year of Huliau In our 2022 annual report, we introduced he huliau no Lunalilo — a turning point for our organization. As the first year of our huliau, 2023 was a time of reflection and learning.

2023 was also a year of loss. The devastating Maui wildfires in August shook us and all who hold Hawaiʻi nei close. Nearly three-quarters of those who lost their lives were kūpuna (ages 60 or older). We send our aloha to them and their ʻohana across time and space. The tragedy reminded us of the fragility of our ties to ʻike kūpuna, the wisdom of our ancestors. At Lunalilo Home, we also mourned the passing of several beloved resident kūpuna — their presence, stories, and laughter shaped the rhythms of our daily life. Operationally, we faced financial losses due to a reduced census and rising costs driven by inflation.

Yet through these losses, we continued what we began at the start of 2023: listening deeply to kūpuna and ʻohana. We traveled beyond our east Oʻahu campus to west Oʻahu, Molokaʻi, Kauaʻi, and Hawaiʻi Island. We heard hopes, needs, and a desire for care rooted in pilina and nohona Hawaiʻi. We shared our vision of kauhale kūpuna — elder-centered communities with intergenerational programming to nourish pilina and bring ʻike kūpuna to life in our moʻopuna.

We also listened in quieter ways — to the voices and legacy of kūpuna who are no longer with us.

These moments of kūkā, hoʻolohe, and maopopo pono affirmed what we have always known: care for kūpuna must reflect kaiāulu, nohona Hawaiʻi, pilina, and above all, aloha.

By year’s end, we laid the groundwork for partnerships and programs that will shape our next chapter: We partnered with the Department of Hawaiian Home Lands and Kalanianaʻole Development LLC to explore kupuna rental homes on Hawaiian Home Lands.

We explored new opportunities in Kapōlei to offer kūpuna day care and kūpuna-keiki programs.

We launched a hot meals delivery program in west Oʻahu, supported by Papa Ola Lōkahi, Queen’s Health System, and Kaiser Permanente.

We evaluated acquiring a home care agency — a path not taken, but one that informed our thinking around future care models.

A challenging year, 2023 reminded us that the foundation laid by our King is not just something to honor — it is something to activate for the betterment of our kūpuna, our keiki, and our lāhui.

Nā Lawelawe a me Nā Hana Nui Program Highlights A. Mālama Mau i nā Kūpuna: Long-Term Residential Care Lunalilo Home stands as a place of refuge, dignity, and continuity for Hawaiʻi’s kūpuna. In 2023, we provided fulltime residential care for kūpuna who can no longer live independently — many without the financial means to access care elsewhere. Here they have found more than shelter. They have found their home.Every day, our staff offer clinical support rooted in compassion. But what distinguishes Lunalilo Home is our deep foundation in nohona Hawaiʻi, the lifeways or culture of Hawaiʻi. Residents participate in mele and moʻolelo sessions, are visited by therapy animals, and engage in intergenerational programming that bridges kūpuna and keiki in joyful, healing ways. Meals are local and nutritious, and care is guided by Hawaiian values — including laulima, aloha, and haʻahaʻa.

At Lunalilo Home, Uncle H. found not only care but also a deep and meaningful relationship. The pair shared laughter, care, and steadfast support, enriching each other’s lives through the years.

To this day, he is a steady presence in our community—helping with events, tending to the grounds, and always lifting the spirits of those around him.

Lunalilo Home is more than just mom’s Adult Day Care, the caregivers have become part of our ʻohana.

Caring for kūpuna takes a village, and the spirit of laulima is alive and well at Lunalilo Home through the caring staff and the many community volunteers who share their time, talent, and aloha with nā kūpuna. While it’s a struggle to get mom out the door some days, she always comes home smiling and happy.

C. Hāʻawi Mea ʻAi Kupuna Meals-to-Go Program In 2023, our Kupuna Meals-to-Go program delivered over 34,000 meals to kūpuna across Oʻahu. Our program emphasizes dignity with local-style recipes, nutrition with low-salt and low-sugar meals, and ease for kupuna as our meals are delivered ready-toeat. In addition to our long-standing program in east Honolulu, we provided hot meals to the Governor’s medical kauhale community in downtown Honolulu.

We also launched a kitchen in Māʻili, which enabled us to prepare hot meals for delivery to kūpuna living in Hawaiian Homestead communities in west Oʻahu.

Ke Aliʻi Lokomaikaʻi About Our King From a young age, William Charles Lunalilo (1835–1874) was known by the nickname lokomaikaʻi, meaning kind or generous, an unusual nickname for a keiki. Even after he lost his beloved mother, Kuhina Nui Miriam ‘Auhea Kekāuluohi, in 1845, he continued to give lokomaikaʻi to everyone, regardless of their station. As an adult, he became an early example of a progressive leader in the Kingdom of Hawaiʻi because of his lokomaikaʻi and aloha for his people.

In 1871, Lunalilo executed his last will and testament, setting an example as the first of the large landholding Aliʻi to set aside his lands for the benefit of the people. At the time, few anticipated that Lunalilo would become ruler of Hawaiʻi only two years later.

He passed away too soon after ascending to the throne to leave a lasting impact as the People’s King of Hawaiʻi. However, his legacy of lokomaikaʻi continues through his charitable trust, the King Lunalilo Trust. After his father passed away, the first Lunalilo Home opened its doors in 1883 in Makiki to provide shelter to kanaka in need. Although we moved the nursing home and kūpuna from Makiki to Maunalua in 1929, we continue to provide shelter and care to kanaka over 140 years later.

Nā Pūnāwai Aloha Honoring our Donors In 1862, King Lunalilo entered a songwriting contest and composed Hawaiʻi’s first national anthem in just fifteen minutes.

After winning, he donated the prize to Queen’s Hospital—an early act of generosity that embodies the legacy we carry forward today with the support of our donors. Each contribution to the Trust honors this legacy of aloha, sustaining our programs, nourishing our kūpuna, and upholding the values our Aliʻi lived by.
