Inthesecondhalfof2023,weexpandedourreachbeyondourcampusontheeastendofOʻahu.Withthe wind-downofCOVIDpandemicflexibilities,weworriedaboutkūpunawhomightexperiencegreaterfood insecurity So,welaunchedourfirstnewinitiativesince2002:akitchenontheWaiʻanaecoasttopreparehot mealsforkūpuna,tobedeliveredtotheirhomes.WebuiltrelationshipswithHawaiianHomestead associationsinwestOʻahu Wereceivedlogisticalandfinancialsupportfromnumerousorganizations, includingtheHawaiianCommunityDevelopmentBoard,theCouncilforNativeHawaiianAdvancement, PapaOlaLokahi,theQueenHealthSystem,andKaiserPermanente.Inlessthansixmonths,westoodupa newprogram,providinghotlunchestwiceaweektokūpunafromKapōleitoWaiʻanae

Our First Year of Huliau

Inour2022annualreport,weintroducedhehuliaunoLunalilo aturningpointforour organization.Asthefirstyearofourhuliau,2023wasatimeofreflectionandlearning. 2023wasalsoayearofloss.ThedevastatingMauiwildfiresinAugustshookusandallwhohold Hawaiʻineiclose Nearlythree-quartersofthosewholosttheirliveswerekūpuna(ages60or older) Wesendouralohatothemandtheirʻohanaacrosstimeandspace Thetragedyreminded usofthefragilityofourtiestoʻikekūpuna,thewisdomofourancestors AtLunaliloHome,we alsomournedthepassingofseveralbelovedresidentkūpuna theirpresence,stories,and laughtershapedtherhythmsofourdailylife.Operationally,wefacedfinanciallossesduetoa reducedcensusandrisingcostsdrivenbyinflation.

Yetthroughtheselosses,wecontinuedwhatwebeganatthestartof2023:listeningdeeplyto kūpunaandʻohana WetraveledbeyondoureastOʻahucampustowestOʻahu,Molokaʻi,Kauaʻi, andHawaiʻiIsland Weheardhopes,needs,andadesireforcarerootedinpilinaandnohona Hawaiʻi.Wesharedourvisionofkauhalekūpuna elder-centeredcommunitieswith intergenerationalprogrammingtonourishpilinaandbringʻikekūpunatolifeinourmoʻopuna. Wealsolistenedinquieterways tothevoicesandlegacyofkūpunawhoarenolongerwithus. Thesemomentsofkūkā,hoʻolohe,andmaopopoponoaffirmedwhatwehavealwaysknown: careforkūpunamustreflectkaiāulu,nohonaHawaiʻi,pilina,andaboveall,aloha

LunaliloHomestandsasaplaceofrefuge,dignity,and continuityforHawaiʻi’skūpuna.In2023,weprovidedfulltimeresidentialcareforkūpunawhocannolongerlive independently manywithoutthefinancialmeansto accesscareelsewhere Heretheyhavefoundmorethan shelter TheyhavefoundtheirhomeEveryday,ourstaff offerclinicalsupportrootedincompassion.Butwhat distinguishesLunaliloHomeisourdeepfoundationin nohonaHawaiʻi,thelifewaysorcultureofHawaiʻi.Residents participateinmeleandmoʻolelosessions,arevisitedby therapyanimals,andengageinintergenerational programmingthatbridgeskūpunaandkeikiinjoyful, healingways Mealsarelocalandnutritious,andcareis guidedbyHawaiianvalues includinglaulima,aloha,and haʻahaʻa.

In2023,ourKupunaMeals-to-Goprogramdelivered over34,000mealstokūpunaacrossOʻahu.Our programemphasizesdignitywithlocal-stylerecipes, nutritionwithlow-saltandlow-sugarmeals,and easeforkupunaasourmealsaredeliveredready-toeat Inadditiontoourlong-standingprogramineast Honolulu,weprovidedhotmealstotheGovernor’s medicalkauhalecommunityindowntownHonolulu. WealsolaunchedakitcheninMāʻili,whichenabled ustopreparehotmealsfordeliverytokūpunaliving inHawaiianHomesteadcommunitiesinwestOʻahu.

About Our King

Fromayoungage,WilliamCharlesLunalilo(1835–1874)was knownbythenicknamelokomaikaʻi,meaningkindorgenerous,an unusualnicknameforakeiki Evenafterhelosthisbeloved mother,KuhinaNuiMiriam‘AuheaKekāuluohi,in1845,he continuedtogivelokomaikaʻitoeveryone,regardlessoftheir station.Asanadult,hebecameanearlyexampleofaprogressive leaderintheKingdomofHawaiʻibecauseofhislokomaikaʻiand alohaforhispeople.

In1871,Lunaliloexecutedhislastwillandtestament,settingan exampleasthefirstofthelargelandholdingAliʻitosetasidehis landsforthebenefitofthepeople.Atthetime,fewanticipated thatLunalilowouldbecomerulerofHawaiʻionlytwoyearslater. Hepassedawaytoosoonafterascendingtothethronetoleavea lastingimpactasthePeople’sKingofHawaiʻi However,hislegacy oflokomaikaʻicontinuesthroughhischaritabletrust,theKing LunaliloTrust Afterhisfatherpassedaway,thefirstLunaliloHome openeditsdoorsin1883inMakikitoprovidesheltertokanakain need Althoughwemovedthenursinghomeandkūpunafrom MakikitoMaunaluain1929,wecontinuetoprovideshelterand caretokanakaover140yearslater.
