This information booklet, along with the Prospectus, describe the broad principles on which Dean Close Kingham Hill School is presently run and give an indication of our history and ethos. They are not part of any agreement between the parents and the School. Whilst every effort has been made to ensure that the information provided in this document is correct at the time of printing it is subject to change. This is especially true of subject specifications which may be subject to alteration. A subject will only be offered in Sixth Form where there are sufficient numbers of pupils wishing to study it.

Parents wishing to place specific reliance on a statement or information in this booklet, or the general prospectus should seek written confirmation before accepting the offer of a place.

The Sixth Form at Kingham Hill Character Matters We are very proud of our Sixth Form, and what it means to be a Sixth Former, at Kingham Hill.

Our academic achievements reflect our ambition and dedication, but being part of the Sixth Form is more than just final grades, it’s an opportunity. It’s the chance to grow, to discover and to learn. It’s a chance to serve and to lead.

We are a school that knows and values every pupil and our Sixth Form certainly demonstrates this. The vast majority of our leavers each year go on to study at their first choice universities, both in the UK and overseas, and we place great importance on supporting pupils so they can achieve their best. With a range of subjects on offer, from A Levels to BTECs and CTECs, we are excited about preparing all our pupils with the transferable skills and tools that they need to succeed in school and beyond.

In, and out, of the classroom we ensure that our pupils are equipped to flourish. They are encouraged to take responsibility for their learning, whilst at the same time, receiving all the support they need, both in regards to their studies and personal development. Our wide ranging co-curricular programme means there is always the opportunity for them to try something new, develop their skills or help others. You will find our Sixth Formers supporting their peers, and younger pupils, all over school in so many different ways.

What does our Sixth Form offer?

Wellbeing

We aim to support all pupils to explore the career path that is right for them, helping them to think through their own strengths, weaknesses and interests to find suitable career pathways.

Pupils receive guidance through tutor times, Sixth Form Lectures, Sixth Form Dinners, Chapel and Assembly talks, lunchtime careers talks, employer visits and lessons themselves. Sixth Formers are also taken to various post-school fairs and university open days. We work closely with our Alumni and thus ‘Hillians’ visit often to give talks, host career days and mentor our pupils.

A pupil’s personal development goes hand in hand with their wellbeing. Every Sixth Former, whether day or boarding, is part of a small house in which they have both a Houseparent and their Tutor who monitor their progress and ensure they are well and happy. The Head of Sixth Form can also be found in and among the Sixth Form at all times, supporting and encouraging pupils in all aspects of their Sixth Form journey. As a school with a distinctively Christian ethos, we have many opportunities for pupils to seek help when they need it, through the chaplaincy team, house staff or their teachers. For those boarding at school, our Boarding Houses are a home from home. Sixth Formers are able to cook and clean for themselves as well as support younger pupils in House.

Personal Development All pupils are encouraged to step out of their comfort zone and lead in a way that is appropriate for them, whether this is in a formal or informal way, through our leadership programme. We take pupils’ personal development, inside and outside the classroom, very seriously and are committed to helping pupils set aspirational, yet realistic, goals for themselves and then hold themselves to account as they pursue these.

We help all pupils with their communication, teamwork and public speaking skills throughout their two years in the Sixth Form. As well as having a chance to help younger pupils in lessons, sports or activities, pupils have the opportunity to take a range of additional qualifications shown below, all of which are also valuable for university entry and future employment: • • • • • • •

US Program The US Program is a unique programme allowing pupils the opportunity to study at a traditional British school while meeting US educational requirements in order to receive a US High School Diploma or US Academic transcript. Pupils in this programme receive an individualised academic plan comprised of traditional US courses and A Level ‘electives’. Please note that all pupils are required to obtain written approval from the Director of the American Program, prior to registering for any courses on this programme. Kingham Hill is a member of the Middle States Association. All US Diplomas and US transcripts are recognised by the US Department of Education.

English as a Second Language (ESL) International pupils quickly become part of the community at Kingham Hill. They study and socialise with a wide range of young people from the UK and overseas. The English as a Second Language (ESL) department provides regular lessons and English language support for Sixth Form pupils. The teaching gives an excellent preparation for study at university at home or abroad.

Greens (SEND) Kingham Hill caters for a number of pupils with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities who are fully integrated into the rest of the School. Growing independence is encouraged and expected in order to prepare our pupils for further education and the workplace. The Greens department can give support to Sixth Formers at regular times, sometimes off timetable. Staff are also available to help individual pupils on request.

Opportunities for Sixth Form Pupils • Leadership: Sixth Form pupils can take on a leadership role by applying to be a prefect. The prefect team is responsible for setting a good example of servant -hearted leadership to all prefects as well as being the bridge between pupils and staff. Heads of School are selected from the prefect team each year to act as role models and advocates for the school, as well as the voice of the pupil body.

• Octagon Society: Octagon is Kingham Hill’s academic society: its philosophy is to provide academic extension and enrichment to the most able pupils. Members are given additional opportunities to extend their learning outside lessons to challenge and motivate them to achieve their academic potential whilst being encouraged to pursue their individual interests.

• Sixth Form Socials: From the Winter and Summer Balls, to Sixth Form socials throughout the year, there are plenty of social events for our pupils to look forward to.

• Bar Nights: The Sixth Form Social Club provides an opportunity for pupils to learn to drink responsibly.

The club runs two ‘bar nights’ per week (Thursday and Saturday).

• Sixth Form Dinners: Four dinners are held throughout the course of the year (two in Michaelmas, one in Lent and one in the Trinity term). These are an opportunity for all Sixth Formers to come together and enjoy a three course meal in a formal setting whilst also hearing from an inspirational speaker.

• Drama: A major school production is staged each year, with opportunities for acting, directing, singing, dancing, backstage and front-of-house.

• Sport: A variety of PE activities, House teams organisation, umpiring and coaching Junior Sport.

• Clubs: Including languages, creative skills, ICT, debating and yoga.

Academic Information Curriculum

Types of Courses Available

Pupils are expected to take three courses in the Sixth Form. In exceptional circumstances some pupils may be permitted to take four subjects, subject to consultation with the relevant Heads of Department and the Head of Sixth Form.

At Kingham Hill we offer the following types of courses:

We believe that three courses, with an EPQ, will give pupils the qualifications they need to apply to competitive universities or other opportunities; moreover, this will also allow them to stay on top of their workload, whilst reading extensively around their chosen subjects.

Sixth Form Entry Requirements Pupils entering the Sixth Form need to have achieved at least five GCSEs at Grade 4 or above including Mathematics and English. Some subjects have additional entry requirements (please refer to the individual course pages for specific information). However, we always consider each pupil’s application individually in order to construct the best possible course combination for each student.

Provision of Courses In common with many small schools, we cannot run courses if there is insufficient take-up by pupils. As far as possible we will give advance notice if we are unable to run a course and will help each pupil to find a suitable alternative course combination.

How to Choose your Options • Choose the subjects you think you can do best in - it is the nature of your final grades which determines your university choice.

• Choose subjects which you like, will enjoy studying, and for which you have the motivation and interest to engage in additional research and background reading.

• Look ahead to possible degree courses and careers, but do not be too narrow in this. Don’t commit yourself to areas of study for which you have no enthusiasm because of a career plan which you may well wish to change later on.

• Do not select on narrow definitions of “usefulness”. It is very difficult to prove that one subject is more useful than another.

• Listen to advice offered by staff, subject teachers, current Sixth Formers, parents and professionals.

• Think about breadth - consider the opportunity to have variety in your studies.

• A Levels • BTECs • CTECs BTECs (Business and Technology Education Council) and CTECs (Cambridge Technical) are vocational qualifications. The reason for some subjects being called BTECs and others CTECs is simply the different exam boards; BTECs are run by Pearson Edexcel, CTECs by OCR. These vocational qualifications are assessed differently to A Levels with a particular focus on regular assessment (coursework) rather than examination. They are respected by Russell Group Universities and are seen to demonstrate a range of skills.

They carry UCAS points with them in the same way as A Levels.

Our vocational qualifications have been chosen by us because universities and employers alike respect the skills and experience gained through them, and - we believe - set pupils up excellently for the world beyond Kingham.

EPQ - Extended Project Qualification The Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) provides an opportunity for pupils to extend their abilities beyond the A Level syllabus, stand out from their peers and prepare themselves for university or their future career. The EPQ carries a similar weight to an AS qualification in the new UCAS tariff; it is assessed at A Level standard and graded A*- E. All pupils are expected to take an EPQ The EPQ encourages creativity, curiosity and independent learning. Pupils are required, with appropriate supervision, to: • Choose an area of interest, a project topic may be directly related to a pupil’s main study programme, but should extend beyond subject specifications.

• Draft a title and aims for the project for formal approval.

• Plan, research and carry out the project to achieve a product.

• Deliver a presentation on their project to an audience.

• Provide evidence of all stages of project development and production for assessment. This must include a completed project log but other materials can be submitted for assessment.

• A finished product may take the form of a research based written report, a production (e.g. charity event, fashion show or sports event etc.) or an artefact (e.g. piece of art, a computer game or realised design). Productions and artefacts must also be accompanied by a shorter written report.

• About 30 of the 120 guided learning hours will be taught, focusing on research, project management and other relevant skills. These will guide pupils in how to approach and conduct their project. The remaining time will be spent individually researching a topic and producing the final essay, artefact or event then preparing a presentation on the project.

Why should you study Animal Management?

Why should you study Art & Design?

Studying for a BTEC in Animal Management will equip you with the practical knowledge, skills and understanding to care for a range of animals in a variety of settings. The school farm provides a good basis for husbandry tasks, behaviour observation and health checks, supplemented by exotic species in the Science labs, and visits to animals kept in other settings in our local area. Offsite trips and external speakers facilitate a widening and broadening of knowledge and understanding.

If you enjoy drawing, painting, sculpture or simply developing ideas with a range of media, then this course is for you. You will embark upon a series of creative coursework projects providing opportunities to think, communicate and express yourself in a visual language, using both traditional and digital media and processes to create personal and imaginative responses.

Within the BTEC syllabus, there is a focus on learning that brings together knowledge and understanding with practical and technical skills. This is achieved through learners performing vocational tasks that encourage the development of appropriate vocational behaviours and transferable skills. These include the ability to learn independently, research actively and methodically, being able to give presentations and participate as active group members.

Within the course, pupils prepare for and spend 70 hours on work experience placements in the Animal Care sector, developing valuable employability skills.

Career Pathways BTEC qualifications are primarily designed to support progression to employment. Learners completing this qualification could access entry-level roles in areas such as: kennel or cattery assistant, animal care assistant in animal businesses, charities or wildlife trusts, retail assistant in pet or animal-related retail establishments, assistant to an animal trainer, e.g. trainer of assistance dogs for the disabled, animal technician in animal centres. Taken alongside other BTEC qualifications or A Levels, learners would be prepared for a wide range of jobs, including administrative and retail roles.

Course Information • Exam Board: BTEC Pearson 601/7524/2 • Entry Criteria: Pupils must have achieved five or more GCSEs at Grade 4 or above, including Mathematics and English.

• Assessment: Animal Management BTEC is assessed through a combination of four internally assessed (project based) units and one externally assessed, examined unit (worth 40% of the course).

You will develop your knowledge and independent research skills, responding critically to the work and ideas of other artists, allowing you to communicate, question and explore ideas and perceptions of the world around you.

In Lower Sixth, there is the freedom to develop and explore your practical skills through a series of short, open-ended experimental workshops, based on developing a visual language and the enjoyment of process and making. Key skills will be reinforced and developed and you will complete an extended project which will help you to understand how to respond to the assessment objectives. In Upper Sixth pupils will further specialise in their strongest area of interest, developing work based on an idea, issue, concept or theme. The practical elements are supported by a written related study in which pupils explore the artists who have influenced them. Your knowledge and understanding will be combined in your coursework portfolio.

Throughout the course there will be opportunities for gallery visits, along with participation in workshops to enhance your skills.

Career Pathways A starting point for pupils wishing to develop a career in the creative industries, A Level Art & Design enables progression towards art foundation and a degree in: video, fashion, textile design, graphics, 3D design, product design, interior design, fine art, film and digital media, animation, architecture, design for interactive media, illustration, teaching, automotive design and many others.

Course Information • Exam Board: AQA (7202) • Entry Criteria: Pupils must have achieved Grade 6 or above in GCSE Art or DT. They must also demonstrate an enthusiasm for the visual arts, independence, resilience, the ability to think critically and analyse, an ability to draw, curiosity and imagination.

• Assessment: This course is assessed through non-exam assessment and there is no written exam, although there is a

1000 - 3000 word written component which provides an opportunity for pupils to write about their personal study. The assessment is broken down into two components. The Personal Investigation is worth 60% and the Externally Set Assignment is worth 40%. The ESA is issued by AQA and pupils will complete their final response during 15 hours of supervised time. All assessment work is produced in art studio conditions.

Why should you study Biology?

Why should you study Business?

Biology is an interesting, stimulating and relevant course that will open your mind to the wonders and intricacies of how living organisms survive and function.

Studying for a CTEC in Business will give you an in-depth understanding of how businesses work. It carries equivalent UCAS points to A Levels, but is a different sort of qualification, assessed through a combination of exams and coursework and focused on real businesses.

A Level Biology suits anyone who is naturally inquisitive and does not accept simple explanations for how something works. It is ideal for those who are able to hold lots of ideas in their mind and make links between them. As it is such a broad course, it caters for those who enjoy, on the one hand, finding out about how molecules within the smallest part of a cell work (e.g. proteins in membranes) to those, on the other hand, who delight in exploring how organisms in whole ecosystems interact and evolve.

The course builds upon work studied at GCSE and involves detailed study of topics such as biological molecules, cells and relationships between organisms. You will also analyse processes such as photosynthesis and respiration.

In addition, you will cover challenging new areas such populations, evolution, ecosystems and gene technology. All of these areas are rapidly changing areas of science and you will consider the impact they have on our health and society in general, increasing your deeper understanding of the world around us.

Career Pathways Success in Biology leads to a wide range of higher education and career opportunities in areas including: agriculture, biochemistry, biology, biotechnology, dentistry, environmental sciences, exercise science, food science, forensic science, genetic engineering, medicine, micro-biology, pathology, pharmacy and veterinary science. Other possibilities include animal welfare, midwifery, nursing, horticulture, physiotherapy, psychology, speech therapy and teaching.

• Entry Criteria: Pupils must have achieved Grade 7 or above in GCSE Biology (or a 7, 7 if they have completed a Double Science Award). They must also have passed Mathematics with a Grade 6 or above.

The Lower Sixth is a foundation course covering a wide range of business topics. Knowledge of this is assessed through an externally examined written paper at the end of the first year of study.

In the Upper Sixth, you will do more specialised work and will complete three portfolios of coursework. There are no exams in Upper Sixth (unless you re-take the Lower Sixth papers).

Throughout the course you will be expected to take the initiative in building personal contacts and arranging business visits as well as wider reading and online research.

Career Pathways A business qualification opens up numerous career pathways, for example: banking and finance, marketing and advertising, business administration and management, hospitality, sports and leisure management - or starting your own business as an entrepreneur. Many pupils who follow this course go on to study business and management at university.

You will study areas such as marketing, accounting, people management, business operations, customer service, business documents and meetings. As well as building a strong knowledge base, you will develop your skills in report writing, presentations and research.

• Assessment: A Level Biology is assessed through three externally examined written papers which are taken at the end of Upper Sixth. Each exam is two hours long.

A separate endorsement of practical skills will be taken alongside the A Level. This will be assessed by teachers and will be based on direct observation of pupils’ competency in a range of skills that cannot be assessed in written exams.

Physical Chemistry covers atomic structure in which you will take your GCSE knowledge to another level, and also some of the more mathematical sides, including rates of reaction and the idea of dynamic equilibrium. Organic Chemistry looks at the plethora of compounds based on carbon, an incredibly versatile element as you will see. This encompasses many of the molecules upon which life is based, hence the name of the subject. The Performing Arts BTEC is a practical based qualification, and at Kingham Hill it is very much directed at the acting specialism within the broader performing arts area, which means there is a lot of emphasis on performing. A Philosophy A Level will provide you with a strong foundation for critical-thinking, moral reasoning, and decision-making. It will encourage you to question assumptions, analyse arguments and explore the most fundamental questions in life.

If you enjoy capturing moments and details from the world around you, or designing complex digital experiments, then this course is for you.

Philosophy A Level is all about getting to grips with the questions raised by Western Philosophy over the last 2,500 years and engaging with the greatest minds in this tradition that attempt to answer them. Through doing so you will then begin to develop your own views as well as sharpening your analytical and evaluative skills.

The course is made up of the core areas of study in the Western Philosophical tradition including epistemology (the study of the nature of knowledge), metaphysics (the nature of reality), and moral philosophy. Along the way we will also incorporate ontology (the study of the nature of being) and logic (the rules of reasoning).

Photography is about looking, learning, thinking and exploring ideas and using the camera to capture the world as you see it. • Assessment: This course is assessed through a 1000 - 3000 word written

component which provides an opportunity for pupils to write about their personal study. The assessment is broken down into two components. The Personal Investigation is worth 60% and the Externally Set Assignment is worth 40%.

Studying for an A Level in Physics is all about exploring the world around you and using that knowledge to solve problems. From the everyday phenomena, to the more cutting edge theories of particles.

Brexit, Trump, Covid and six prime ministers in ten years. The recent political landscape both in the UK and America has been unpredictable and somewhat tumultuous. The truth is that it is difficult to know precisely what you will be studying when you embark on a politics course, and that is one of the things that makes the subject so appealing.

This course will enable you to develop your essential scientific knowledge and understanding, as well as establish links between theory and experiment. It will lead you through the study of the laws, theories and models of physics, and allow you to explore their practical application in a variety of real-life situations.

Topics studied and examined in the first two external papers include measurements and their errors, particles and radiation, mechanics and materials, electricity, further mechanics and thermal physics and nuclear physics. The third examined paper will include questions that assess conceptual and theoretical understanding of experimental methods that will draw on pupils’ experiences of the core practicals.

Career Pathways The study of Physics can lead to a wide range of higher education and career opportunities in areas including: research physics, engineering, healthcare, aerospace, energy, software development, nanotechnology, robotics, meteorology and air traffic control. A separate endorsement of practical skills will be taken alongside the A Level. This will be assessed by teachers and will be based on direct observation of pupils’ competency in a range of skills that cannot be assessed in written exams.

However, there are ways of making sense of the chaos. Whilst the examples change from year to year, the nuts and bolts of politics is remarkably resilient. In Britain we have an uncodified constitution, meaning it is a collection of principles, laws and conventions, that are sufficiently flexible to allow major change to occur, while being in keeping with the traditions of the political system. The United States is protected by its own constitution, ostensibly more structured and prescriptive than the British one, but also full of ambiguity and interpretation.

Therefore, Politics at A Level is designed to enable you to understand the broadly unchanging structures that underpin the political systems in Britain and the United States and then to investigate the conflict and consensus that builds on top and fluctuates from year to year, month to month, hour to hour.

During the course you will develop your listening, speaking, reading and writing skills in the context of four key themes: changes in Spanish society, political and artistic culture in Spanish-speaking countries, immigration and Spanish multicultural society, and the Franco dictatorship and the transition to democracy. You will also study two cinematic and literary works in depth: ‘El laberinto del fauno’ (Guillermo del Toro, 2006) and ‘Como agua para chocolate’ by Laura Esquivel.

Pupils will have to work hard outside lessons too: proficiency in a language does not come from just attending the lessons and completing prep. Pupils have to live the language, by reading and watching Spanish in their free time.

A Level Spanish is rather like General Studies in another language, so pupils must think for themselves, form their own opinions and not be afraid to share them. You will need a keen eye for detail and to be willing to learn from your mistakes.

Sport CTEC Why should you study Sport?

Studying for a CTEC in Sport will provide you with the opportunity to explore the anatomy of the human body and the physiology of exercise alongside developing knowledge of sporting organisation and development. A CTEC in Sport carries equivalent UCAS points to A Levels, but is a different sort of qualification, assessed through a combination of exams and coursework and focused on practical experience. Successful completion of Sport CTEC leads to pupils attaining the equivalent of one and a half A Levels.

You will learn the fundamentals of how to be a successful coach whilst enhancing and developing your sports coaching and physical activity leadership skills. In addition, you will learn to complete a thorough performance analysis of one team and one individual sport of choice, whilst discovering your strengths and weaknesses in the outdoor adventurous sports of mountain biking and kayaking.

You will explore the vital link between performance success and injury prevention and rehabilitation, alongside gaining a strong understanding of the requirements and expectations of running a sports facility. This will include the opportunity for you to plan, deliver and review a sports event of your choice. With strong links to Biology A Level for certain units, this course offers pupils an interesting and varied syllabus that is delivered through a mix of theory and practical lessons.

Sport and fitness is a huge industry and studying for a CTEC in Sport could be your first step towards a sports-related career.
