Word from the Head At Kingham Hill School, we find ourselves on an exciting journey - one of growth, renewal, and moving forward with confidence. This is a time of great change, as we join the Dean Close Foundation and step into a partnership that promises to bring fresh opportunities, new resources, and lasting benefits for our whole school community. In these pages, we celebrate hope - not as something distant, but as a living force already taking root in our daily lives. It is visible in our pupils: in the way they embrace challenges, embody our core values, and show through their actions that the future is theirs to shape. They remind us that hope is not just about looking forward - it is about building today what we dream of for tomorrow. Our outstanding exam results this year are a testament to the commitment and determination of our pupils, who strive to achieve their very best. Yet what makes our community truly special goes far beyond academic success. Time and again, our pupils step forward to take on leadership roles, engage wholeheartedly in charitable initiatives, and look for ways - big and small - to make life brighter for those around them. Their hard work, generosity, and sense of responsibility make us proud and remind us of the values that lie at the heart of Kingham Hill. Our young people are the reason this school exists. Their energy, dedication, and good humour give us cause to believe that the best is still to come. As we reflect on this moment of change and anticipate all that lies ahead, we do so with a shared conviction: the journey continues, and with hope as our guide, the future is bright.

Kingham Hill Joins the Dean Close Foundation In a significant step that will strengthen independent education across the region, Kingham Hill School joined the Dean Close Foundation in August 2025. Based on shared values and a commitment to nurturing the unique potential in every pupil, this is an exciting development both for the School and the Foundation. The Dean Close Foundation is a growing, vibrant and diverse family of independent schools and nurseries, uniting around a shared vision and set of values. These spring from the origins of Dean Close School, which was founded in 1886 in memory of Dean Francis Close, Rector of Cheltenham and educational philanthropist. The Christian ethos of that original school continues today, and the aim is that every child is given opportunities to flourish, underpinned by the core values of courage, contribution and love. The similarities in our values and educational approach are the basis for a partnership which will allow our two senior schools to maintain their distinctiveness but collaborate where it will benefit pupils and staff. This partnership also brings the reassurance that our school has a strong and sustainable financial base on which to develop further. “In joining such a dynamic and forward-thinking family of schools, this will provide exciting further opportunities for our pupils and staff, from academic synergies and cocurricular collaborations to expansion of our careers and futures network.” commented, Mr Last, Head. We would like to express our thanks to the Foundation’s Trustees who have worked with us to explore the many benefits that a sound partnership will bring to both Kingham Hill School and to the Dean Close Foundation.

Outstanding GCSE and A Level Results

In August Kingham Hill was proudly celebrating an excellent year of academic achievement. In the Sixth Form, over half (53%) of all A Level, BTEC and CTEC results were at the top A*/A grades, with 79% at grades A*-B. 31% of GCSE results were at the highest Grades 9-7. Over 20% of our Upper Sixth cohort achieved straight A*/As, and in 14 of the subjects offered in our Sixth Form, at least half of all grades were at A*/A grades. These results were a true reflection of the strength of both our pupils’ dedication and the quality teaching that characterises life on the Hill. Head, Pete Last said, “Over the past two years, our pupils have shown remarkable commitment and perseverance, and I couldn’t be prouder of their

achievements. These results are a testament to their hard work, and I want to extend my heartfelt congratulations to each one of them. Alongside celebrating their accomplishments, we must also recognise the invaluable support and dedication of our teaching staff, whose efforts have been crucial in helping these young people reach their true potential.” As our new Lower Sixth look forward to settling into a newly refurbished Sixth Form Centre, our leavers embark on exciting journeys to Oxbridge and a range of other top, first-choice universities, including the University of Bath, University of Bristol, Durham University, University of Edinburgh, University of Exeter, University of Leeds, Loughborough University and the University of Manchester.

Spine-Tingling Stories In May, the Lower School was visited by acclaimed young adult author, Gabriel Dylan - best known for his gripping horror fiction. From building suspense to creating believable characters in eerie settings, Gabriel encouraged pupils to experiment with their own ideas, and reminded us that fear can be a powerful storytelling tool.

New Prefects and Heads of School From a high-calibre of candidates, Kingham Hill’s 2025/26 Prefect Team and Heads of School were announced in the second half of the term. Each pupil was chosen for their integrity, character, and potential to contribute meaningfully to the school. In their roles, they will support the pupil body and take an active part in the daily life of the Hill. Whether through mentoring, organising events, or representing the school at important occasions, their contributions will help to uphold the values of our community. We have every confidence that this year’s team will approach their duties with enthusiasm, and we look forward to seeing them develop.

Sensational Speech and Drama Concert In June, the Performing Arts Centre came alive with infectious energy as pupils delivered an eclectic evening of performances at this year’s Speech and Drama Concert. Directed by Mrs Phillips, the concert showcased a range of LAMDA examination pieces and dramatic recitals. From classic literature to contemporary monologues, the audience was treated to scenes that evoked laughter, goosebumps, and even a few tears. Opening with a magical adaptation of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, performers Fifi, Jemima, Eliora, Sam, and Arthur (1st Form) set the tone for a night filled with dramatic flair as they transported their audience to Narnia.

Highlights included Tamsin’s (4th Form) performance of Everything, Everything, and Ollie’s (4th Form) engaging portrayal of Roshi from Wonder Boy, while Mikayla (Upper Sixth) delivered two striking solo performances as the troubled Maggie in Cat On A Hot Tin Roof and Andromache in the tragic climax of The Women of Troy. Each piece was delivered with maturity and sensitivity beyond her years. From the chilling rhythms of Green Beret to the comic genius of A Bit of Fry and Laurie, there was something for everyone. The performers demonstrated a wide emotional range and technical skill, underpinned by weeks of dedicated rehearsal under the guidance of Mrs Phillips.

Speech Day Marking the close of another fantastic academic year at Kingham Hill, Speech Day was a celebration of pupil achievement, personal growth, and community. Following a Chapel Service, which offered time for reflection and gratitude, the much-anticipated Prize-Giving Ceremony honoured pupils across the year groups for academic excellence, character, progress, and outstanding contributions to school life. Special recognition was given for leadership, initiative, service, and sportsmanship, celebrating both the visible and quiet contributions that make Kingham Hill a thriving community.

Bake Off Bonanza alongside Deputies Joshua and Summer, delivered moving speeches that looked back with pride and ahead with hope. The afternoon concluded fittingly with tea on the lawn and a friendly cricket match between the 1st XI and the Hillians.

Celebrating Literary Talent

In his address, Head Mr Last reflected on a year marked by resilience, unity, and shared purpose, and reminded us that the strength of Kingham Hill lies in the people who make it: pupils, staff, families, and alumni. As we bade a fond farewell to our Upper Sixth, each pupil was presented with a Bible; they leave as cherished members of the community, equipped to go forward – but always welcome on the Hill. Heads of School, Millie and Alex,

1st Form began their week with an overnight Scouts camp, singing songs around the campfire and learning essential survival skills. Meanwhile, 2nd Form ventured to the picturesque Jurassic Coast for a residential adventure, and 3rd Form took flight with RAF-themed outings, explored the Leicester Space Museum, and engaged in a science project and journalism workshop. Other highlights included a visit to the Black Country Living Museum, a themed treasure hunt and immersive World War Two activities.

This term, the English Department launched the first KHS Creative Writing Competition, offering our wordsmiths a platform to share their talents. Across three categories, the competition drew entries which demonstrated depth of skill and stylistic range. In the poetry category, Celia (3rd Form) was awarded for ‘Watching the Seconds’, and in the long story category, Molly (3rd Form) claimed the title with ‘The Petals of War’. The short story category – and overall competition – was won by Jayson (Lower Sixth), praised for his mature, accomplished style, reminiscent of established literary voices.

Citizen Science in Action

Enrichment Week In July, the academic year was rounded off with an unforgettable Enrichment Week - five days packed with activities, challenges, and experiences that brought learning to life beyond the classroom.

In a showdown of three competitive rounds, our Junior Bake Off finalists Milly, Eliza and Hugo (1st Form) had the opportunity to present their gluten-free goods to Mr Last and Mr Oatridge, in assembly. After much deliberation and the all-important taste test, Milly was crowned as the deserving 2025 Junior Bake Off winner for her rich chocolate sponge cake, featuring a delicious mousse layer, topped generously with raspberries.

In the Middle School, pupils embraced the outdoors, hiking the Malvern Ridge and exploring the Heart of England. Highlights also included archery, low ropes courses, an escape room, watersports, and even a Silver Duke of Edinburgh expedition. Lower Sixth took on even greater challenges; a Gold Duke of Edinburgh expedition in the Lake District, Combined Cadet Force camps, a community volunteering day, and residential walk, bike, and paddleboard adventure in Minehead.

In April, our Lower Sixth Geographers took part in a national citizen science research project by investigating the health of our rivers and streams. Starting at Farm ED, a local and leading centre for agroecological education, the group gathered baseline data which indicated a healthy river ecosystem. With this knowledge, they were then able to sample, compare, and upload data from the rivers Eye, Dikler, Windrush and Evenlode. We eagerly anticipate the results of the national analysis and the insights it will provide into the current state of our waterways.

In the evenings, pupils continued to enjoy a lively programme of events, including cinema nights, pool parties, games, cricket, Slip ‘n’ Slide, and the eagerly awaited Summer Music Concert.

Scouts Hit the Right Notes

Since its revival last October, Kingham Hill’s Scout troop continues to go from strength to strength. Most recently, our Scouts earnt their Musician Activity Badges as they work towards the completion of their Chief Scout’s Gold Award.

Quizzers Reach Schools’ Challenge National Play-Offs

Team KHS Takes on 10K for MDUK On Sunday 11th May, Team KHS proudly took part in the Bidwells Oxford 10K, running in support of 5th Form pupil Meriel and the MAP Nemaline Fund at Muscular Dystrophy UK. Pupils, parents, and staff, alongside Meriel’s friends and family, came together to run and cheer for a cause close to their hearts. Houseparent and Head of Wellbeing, Mr Tim Martin, reflected: “Meriel is the most remarkable young lady who we have the privilege of having as part of our school community. We all use our muscles to walk, to run, to breathe - but for some, the muscles are weak, meaning

overtime, with the growth of the skeletal frame, everyday tasks become even more challenging. It was incredible to see so many runners and supporters at the event! Together, we have raised £2,785 almost three times our original target.” The Kingham Hill community hopes that by raising awareness of nemaline myopathy, it will be possible to directly fund research that can make that uphill battle for children diagnosed with nemaline myopathy in future generations, a little easier.

Schools’ Challenge is the leading national general knowledge competition for schools across the United Kingdom. This term, Kingham Hill’s U15 Quiz Team earned a place among the top 10 schools in the country, reaching the Intermediate Round of the prestigious National Play-Offs. In a hard-fought match, the team put in a commendable performance against the current title-holders. Despite their best efforts, the strength of the opposition proved decisive, with The Perse School winning 630–190. Reaching this stage marks a historic milestone for Kingham Hill as no school team has ever advanced this far in the competition before.

Musicians Take Centre Stage In June, our talented pupils in 1st to 3rd Form took to the stage for the Junior Concert – a celebration of dedication, hard work, and musical development over the past year. Each performance reflected the confidence and creativity fostered through our Key Stage 3 Music curriculum which offers free instrumental tuition. Then, on the penultimate day of term, the Summer Concert showcased the talents of our Concert Band, Choir, Orchestra, Kingham Brass, and Flute Choir, along with several impressive solo performances. As a heartfelt tribute to the Music Department, our Upper Sixth leavers performed the ABBA classic, ‘Thank You for the Music’.

Pupil Rocketry Club Takes Flight

Leadership, Service, and Adventure In May, we celebrated the achievements of our Gold Duke of Edinburgh recipients; Alex, Catherine, Luke, Millie and Summer (Upper Sixth), each of whom has shown outstanding commitment throughout the programme. In the volunteering, physical, and skills sections of the Award, they gave generously of their time - coaching sports, mentoring peers, and supporting their local churches, among other meaningful contributions. Whilst their residential experiences ranged from supporting at riding stables to contributing to the construction of a house in Guatemala, for their expedition, the group together undertook four challenging days of canoeing along the Rivers Wye and Severn.

Following this we saw the next Silver and Gold DofE groups complete their practice and final expeditions in the Brecon Beacons and The Lake District. It is wonderful to see so many of our pupils participating in the Award Programme. We’re incredibly proud of the way our pupils demonstrate what it means to lead through action. Between 1st April 2024 and 31st March 2025 alone, our Duke of Edinburgh Award participants have collectively volunteered 884 hours. In this time, their dedication and commitment to serving others has made a measurable difference, contributing an estimated £5,657 in social value.

This term, Lower Sixth pupil, Conor has led his very own Rocketry Club on Monday evenings. Setting an excellent example, Conor has taught his peers about the science of rocketry, guiding them through the process of how to design, build, and launch their own rockets. After discovering his love for flying in the 3rd Form, through Kingham’s CCF, just three years later, Conor has even obtained his private pilot’s license.

Meet the Team Name: Mr Paul Jones

What is your role within the School? Head of Sixth Form, Business Subject Lead, DofE Manager, and Charity Co-Ordinator. What did you do before KHS? I was working at Birkdale School in Sheffield, where I was school Chaplain and also taught Economics and Business. What is the most interesting part of your day-to-day work? Being with my tutor group! I will miss them as I take up my role leading the Sixth Form. Working with them and helping them navigate life and school is not always easy, but it’s great and so very rewarding. It is one of the reasons I wanted to take on the challenge of the Sixth Form, as I essentially get to increase the size of my form! What activities do you enjoy in your spare time? Other than hanging out with my wife and sons, you will most likely find me outside riding a bike of some description, climbing a mountain, or in the garden. Who, or what, has most inspired you? Ernest Shackleton is one of my heroes - someone who exuded resilience with literally every step. Someone who was not perfect but servant-hearted and worked hard for those in his care. My parents fit into that category too - they selflessly sacrificed a lot to encourage, support and give my brother and I opportunities that I remain thankful for to this day. Their examples of servant-hearted leadership is what I aspire to, both with my family but also in how I hope to lead the Sixth Form. One activity on your ‘Bucket List’... Riding the ‘Top of the World’ mountain bike trail in Whistler, British Columbia. Finally, the best thing about working at Kingham Hill is… The shared vision and collective drive of my colleagues to deliver the best for each boy and girl on The Hill - whatever that looks like, in whatever situation.

CCF Passing Out Parade In May, Kingham Hill’s Combined Cadet Force (CCF) held its annual Passing Out Parade, marking a proud milestone as our 3rd Form Cadets completed the first stage of their training with the Army and RAF sections. The school was honoured to welcome Kingham Hill Governor and Army

Nurse, Debra Ritsperis, to inspect the Contingent and present a series of awards to Cadets who demonstrated outstanding performances during their training and recent Recruits’ Camp. It was a moment of pride for all involved and fitting recognition of the hard work put in by both the Cadets and the staff.

Leavers’ High Tea In early July, the Upper Sixth celebrated their time at Kingham Hill with a poignant Leavers’ High Tea. Over scones and fizz, various members of staff, shared heartfelt words with their pupils before the year group was welcomed into the Hillian community by Alumni and Engagement Lead, Andrew Mitchell, alongside fellow Hillians, Mark Amis, Ellie Copsey and Josh Le Feuvre. With 2025 Yearbooks in hand, each leaver received a beautiful, engraved fountain pen, crafted from wood sourced on the Hill - a fitting gift for signing well-wishes.

Art Inspired by the Community In May, 1st - 4th Form had the opportunity to visit the biennial Sculpture Trail Exhibition at Kingham Lodge.

Through exploring the diverse styles and sculptural techniques, they were able to exercise their analytical skills. Everyone made the most of their experience, taking plenty of photos to use as inspiration back in the classroom. Later, taking further inspiration from the local community, pupils entered their own original artworks into Chipping Norton Theatres’ charity art auction. Responding to the theme ‘Scenes Unseen’, each piece was accompanied by a reflective personal interpretation. Three postcards were featured from Kingham Hill, created by Bradey, Max and Daniel (1st Form)!

Sports Day One of Kingham Hill’s longest running traditions, Sports Day is a celebration of team and school spirit. Whether striving for a win or supporting from the sidelines, every pupil and parent contributed to the vibrant atmosphere on Friday 20th June, making Sports Day 2025 a memorable event. From the morning’s first race to the final relay in the afternoon heat, pupils gave their best across a full schedule of track and field events. The day included sprints, challenging middle-distance races, relays, and a variety of field events including the long jump,

javelin, discus, high jump, and shot put. Head, Mr Last, commented “It was a truly wonderful Sports Day. Our pupils demonstrated not only great sporting talent, but also the character that lies at the heart of our school: resilience, determination, and wholehearted participation.” To conclude the day, as the awards ceremony unfolded, house cups were presented and the sought-after Victor and Victrix Ludorum titles announced, it was clear that both the pupil body and Hillians alike hold a strong loyalty to their House.

Sixth Form Colours Dinner In May, the Sports Department hosted its annual Sixth Form Colours Dinner, to recognise and celebrate the sporting achievements of our talented and dedicated pupils. Mikayla (Upper Sixth) reflected “I had a great time at the Colours Dinner, a time to reflect on the next-level sport that occurs on the Hill.” Fellow Class of 2025 leaver, Bella, added “I feel equipped for sport outside the Hill.”

From Courtside to Cricket Stands: World-Class Sporting Trips This term, the Senior Netball Team enjoyed a thrilling Super League game between the Birmingham Panthers and Leeds Rhinos, at the University of Worcester Arena. In a gripping finish, the game went to two periods of extra time before a golden goal sealed the outcome, with the Birmingham Panthers clinching a dramatic 71–69 victory!

Meanwhile, the Junior A Cricket Team had the opportunity to travel to the iconic Trent Bridge to watch day two of the Rothesay Test between England and Zimbabwe. It was a day filled with exciting moments, as England closed play well on top after declaring on 565-6, bowling Zimbabwe out for 265, and taking two late wickets after enforcing the follow-on.

See Sports Day photos Girls Rugby Squad Impresses at Banbury 10s Blue skies greeted our girls one Sunday in April as they took part in the Banbury 10s Rugby Festival. Coach, Mr Ansley said: “They played with commitment, energy and passion, scoring tries, scrummaging, tackling, kicking, passing and stepping, ending the day with 100% success on line outs!” With each fixture, the squad continues to grow in confidence, skill, and cohesion, laying a strong foundation for even greater success ahead. A solid performance which reflected the team’s hard work and impressive progress of girls’ rugby at Kingham Hill!

Latimer Leads in House Sports As always, the Houses brought the heat for this term’s House Sports Matches! Taking place across the Astroturf, in the Sports Hall, and on the Bradford pitches, it was fantastic to see strong performances alongside real team spirit in both the Netball and Football. It was a stand-out day for Latimer, who took both the Inter and Senior Netball titles in the glorious sunshine.

Pupils Host Junior Sports Tournament on the Hill In May, the Sport Department was again delighted to host the annual Windrush U9 and U11 Football and Netball Tournament with seven local schools competing. A wonderful afternoon of sport was had with astute refereeing from Kingham Hill pupils and great support from the sidelines. “The excitement was incredible in the lead up to the departure and they had a fantastic time competing against a variety of different schools.” commented Headington Rye Oxford.

Caps Off to Our American Program Graduates At the end of June, we celebrated the accomplishments of our American Program Class of 2025 with a memorable Graduation Ceremony. The afternoon opened with a warm welcome and invocation by Reverend Tom Hutchings, followed by an address from Lieutenant Colonel Carla Cox, Director of the Military Treatment Facility at RAF Croughton. Speaking directly to the graduates, Lieutenant Colonel Cox offered words of encouragement and gratitude, leading a round of applause for the families and staff who have supported the class throughout their journey.

reading of ‘Wonderful’ by Harry Baker. Mr Furst, American Program Director, concluded the ceremony with final reflections, congratulating the Class of 2025 and offering his best wishes for the road ahead. The celebration continued with a BBQ on the Hill, where family, friends and staff gathered to honour our graduates and mark the beginning of their next exciting chapter.
