The reflections and insights in this guide are drawn from my faith journey on the battlefields of the marketplace as a leader and business owner. I am an older man who tirelessly plays the game of business almost every day. By my nature, I am an overachieving CEO who just won’t quit climbing the next mountain and can’t stop marveling at the mysteries, even miracles, of pursuing the opportunities of a Kingdom Builder. I N T R O D U C T I O N PSALM 119: 45-47 I will walk about in freedom, for I have sought out your precepts. I will speak of your statutes before kings and I will not be put to shame, for I delight in your commands because I love them.

WHO IS A KINGDOM BUILDER?

I have written this guide to help you claim your role as a Kingdom Builder. Who is a Kingdom Builder? It’s any woman or man seeking to integrate Biblical principles into leadership decisions in the marketplace. It’s anyone willing to organize resources and align priorities to intentionally affect the Kingdom of God. The world is hungry for trustworthy, courageous leaders who desire to effect the quality of life in the marketplace. Kingdom Builders study, reflect, seek quality relationships and pursue making assets on this earth more valuable. And, then they manage those assets honorably. Kingdom Builders integrate the wisdom of Scripture with the their God-given interest in the marketplace. They are what the world needs.

BECOMING

Becoming who God has designed you to be, that is what this writing is all about. Becoming a Kingdom Builder requires a deliberate choice to adopt new thoughts, cultivate new relationships, and declare new ambitions for the Kingdom of God. The journey transforms most of us with amazing blessings, exciting discoveries, and joyful surprises. It is the richest way to invest your life. The Kingdom Builder’s trek is also rigorous, but what have you ever accomplished of any value that didn’t require gut-wrenching effort? Becoming a more mature Kingdom Builder never stops; it only gets more joyful.

THE 5 BIG DECISIONS

What is a Big Decision? It is an intentional choice to cross over a decision line to achieve a desired state of mind or outcome. The 5 Big Decisions center on five words of action:

SCRIPTING YOUR JOURNEY

If you could write the script for a life well lived, what would you title your chapters? As you engage with the materials ahead, you will be scripting aspects of your whole life that will help you clarify your story. Feel free to put your thoughts directly in this journey guide or in the Kingdom Builder digital notebook (download at www.Kingdom-Builder.org) or in a personal journal dedicated to your life scripting process. Put dates on your headings, draw pictures, use symbols. Mostly, record your thoughts as if they are gifts of provision and revelation.

INSIGHT

When you want something that is worth the pain of pursuit, you are close to the flame of desire. Desire keeps you going through disappointment and opposition. Declaring your desire is important to your faith as it allows you to see beyond the present to a future of hope.

REFLECTION

Each of us must discover and declare the desire of our heart that God has uniquely placed within us. At one point you probably declared a major in college, proclaiming to yourself and your university the direction your studies would take. Your kingdom purpose, like your major in college, resides close to your unique giftedness. This God-given ability is the wellspring from which your driving desire emerges. God has placed a deep desire in your heart. If you accept this belief as the truth, it will increase the intentionality of your journey. Your desire may have become apparent early in

life or it might take a life time to release. Kingdom Builders must stay attuned by asking: What is God calling me to understand and pursue now?

INSIGHT

Wise leaders search for self-knowledge. A great pioneer of modern leadership theory, Dr. Warren Bennis, declared, “Self- knowledge is a key attribute of every healthy leader.”

Authentic leaders seek to know themselves and make their actions and beliefs congruent.

REFLECTION

My pastor, Michael, often asks when he concludes his teaching: “What is at the center of your life?” Searching out an answer to this question will help you know yourself better and hone your desires. To become wise is to become disciplined, given not to impulsiveness but to self-examination and proclamation.

So, what is at the center of your life? What matters most to you? What should matter less? What are you going to do with your life that is going to last forever?

2 TIMOTHY 1:7 Psalm 139:15-16 My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place, when I was woven together in the depths of the earth. Your eyes saw my unformed body; all the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be.

God did not give us a spirit of timidity but a spirit of power and love and self-control.

INSIGHT

When you begin following your Holy Ambition, you will have to fight opposition, discouragement and fear. You will feel vulnerable. But know this: God desires for you to be vulnerable so His power can become your source of strength.

When God implants us with His vision, as He did with Nehemiah in the rebuilding of the ancient walls of Jerusalem, opposition will come not just from enemies but also from friends. While it is important to weigh the viewpoints of the trusted, learn to trust God’s nudging on your journey. Fear and discouragement have the greatest impact when people feel powerless and helpless. The antidote to fear and discouragement is perspective: your purpose must be bigger than your fear or discouragement. Becoming a Kingdom Builder means you are seeking to embrace the Sacred Life in the marketplace where the world is hungry for your influence as a faithful leader. Here is a big

C O M M I T 1 CORINTHIANS 9:24-25 Run in such a way as to get the prize. Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training. They do it to get a crown that will not last; but we do it to get a crown that will last forever.

INSIGHT

Commitments are the bridge between your present and your future. The quality of your commitments determines the quality of your future. The better your commitments, the greater your impact on the world. The weaker your commitments, the more mediocrity in your life.

REFLECTION

God wants you to play big on whatever playing field you find yourself. To play big on your journey, you must commit to what you deeply desire. The best way to become a radically effective Kingdom Builder is to commit for 40 days to this one fundamental discipline: Go to a quiet place early each morning and pray in these two ways: A S K G O D, “ WH AT ’ S N EXT ? ”

HEBREWS 10:35-36 So do not throw away your confidence; it will be richly rewarded. You need to persevere so that when you have done the will of God, you will receive what he has promised.

INSIGHT

Endurance is an attribute of survival. Crisis and hardship give us opportunities to develop stamina. Crisis, not prosperity, is when we learn to be strong and resilient. No one succeeds as a leader without the lessons of hardship. So, embrace your setbacks and guard your heart against bitterness. How? See every setback as an opportunity, a lesson and a step toward what is next.

REFLECTION

When you get disheartened, discouraged and even sad, keep pursuing God’s direction. When you do, He will draw near to you. Never give up.

The Scriptures are rich with promises you can claim on your journey that give light in dark corners and hope in trials.

My favorite is one claimed by the founders of Lake Forest Church in Ephesians 3:20-21: “Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever!” DECISION 5 I will endure hardships and employ spiritual disciplines to keep on pursuing God’s purpose for me.

INSIGHT

True wisdom goes beyond amazing knowledge; it is applying knowledge in a life changing way. Are you ready to elevate your role as a leader for the Kingdom? You haven’t come this far in the process to have a lukewarm answer to that question.

REFLECTION

Likely, you can sense God is calling you to get your eyes on the important stuff and get your fears out of way. This life is too short and precious to waste your gifts and passion on insignificant worries, useless hours of spectatorship or passive living. To help you focus or recalibrate your thinking, I have included a Life Plan on the next pages. It is simple and fun to use and builds on the 5 defining decisions of this book. Every year for decades I’ve used this as a way of writing a simple life script for my personal life and my business life.

Psalm 5:1-5 Give ear to my words, O Lord, consider my sighing. Listen to my cry for help, my King and my God, for to you I pray. In the morning, O Lord, you hear my voice. In the morning I lay my requests before you and wait in expectation.

“‘Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. INSIGHT

I’ve learned that when I’m feeling the most stretched, confused, insecure, anxious and vulnerable, that is when I need to pray the most. Prayer equips me to stay in the fight. Prayer brings me clarity. I don’t have to say words. I can just be still. Miraculously something happens.

REFLECTION

The burden of leadership is heavy and the demands are constant. The bigger your leadership role, the bigger your need to release your burdens to Jesus. The stakes of a Kingdom Builder are too high to not submit to God each and every day.

Prayer, along with God’s word, offers needed fortification. On the next page is a go-to prayer you can offer up like a liturgy, at any point during your hectic day. This Kingdom Builder’s Prayer is a prayer I have used for over 20 years.

A KINGDOM BUILDER’ S PRAYER

On pages 34 and 35, I encourage you to write down your specific prayers for both your personal life and your business life. Even date them. This gives you the ability to look back and affirm God’s faithfulness.

Psalm 119: 36-37 Turn my heart toward your statutes and not toward selfish gain. Turn my eyes away from worthless things; preserve my life according to your word.

Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.

ENTERPRISE CAUSE-BASED GIVING

As a business owner, you have a unique opportunity to give. In addition to my own personal giving, my staff and I set aside business earnings into a Kingdom Fund, and as a team we decide our priorities and the causes we want to give to. Everyone feels a sense of belonging, and they ought to; they know their hard work has generated profits to support causes that matter. At the end of each year, my team and I ask, “Have we been generous? Have we made sure to share the bounty God has brought us?”

FINDING YOUR CAUSE

To find your own personal cause, ask what breaks your heart. Is it seeing homeless people sleeping in the street? Is it human trafficking? When a business claims a cause, they become instantly more

purposeful. Find a cause, claim it, and watch God work. You can categorize your causes into three types: the poor, the fight against evil and the development of faith-based companies and churches. My companies give to all three. So what are your causes?

CHOOSING AN ORGANIZATION

Investigate the various organizations and churches that address your causes. You’ll want to make sure the organizations you choose are trustworthy. Look for a faithbased organization with: A trusted leader called by God A vibe that is true to Scripture Evidence of accountability An openness to scrutiny What organizations do you want to support?

This inspiring resource is for owners and leaders in the marketplace. The hand-stained wooden box consists of 40 Scripture cards, 40 Kingdom Builder Insights and 10 note cards. Each card will allow a leader to meditate on it throughout the day, all week or for just 5 minutes. The Kingdom Builder Box was first created as a part of a legacy project for my children, and then, for my clients and dear friends. The Bible has been my cistern from which God’s insights have poured into my books and articles for many years.
