Immigrant Louis King crossed the Atlantic and established his roots in the United States. Originally a watchmaker, he settled the family in Philadelphia.

Catching the “Gold Rush” fever, Louis headed to Salt Lake City, where he opened King & Co, a mining and trading post.

Having acquired a large gold inventory, Louis eventually decided to specialize and focus on jewelry exclusively. In January 1912, the King family moved the business to the heart of Salt Lake City, reopening as King’s Jewelers. A family legacy was born.

The King family moved back East and opened stores in Philadelphia and Atlantic City. With 3 generations now working under one roof, the reputation of King’s Jewelers soared, and the name “King” became synonymous with outstanding jewelry and exceptional prices.

The store’s location in the major tourist market led to great prosperity for the business, prompting Abe and Martin King to explore their options in another tourist destination, South Florida. Abe introduced King’s Jewelers to Miami Beach, while Martin began importing and wholesaling diamonds.

Martin and Scott King (who was later named the CEO and President) relocated their retail operation from Miami Beach to Bay Harbor Islands, as Martin King Jewelers. It became one of South Florida’s most revered retail landmarks.

David and Jono King ushered in the 5th generation of Kings to own and operate the company. By 2004, Scott and Maxine King relocated King Jewelers to Aventura, FL, and opened an exclusive timepiece boutique to complement the extraordinary ladies jewelry collections.

The King family decided to expand their regional presence in the Southeast as they celebrated the grand opening of King Jewelers Nashville, TN in late 2008. Today, David manages the Nashville store located in the Green Hills shopping area.

A BRIEF HISTORY OF SWISS WATCH MAKING The story of Switzerland’s dominance in watch-making is remarkable in that it reflects so many of the powerful forces that formed European history for the last six hundred years.

Let’s go back in time to 1530 and go to Nuremberg, Germany.

The first portable timepiece was produced by Peter Henlein, a German clockmaker. This occurred just thirteen years after the German monk Martin Luther hadpublished his 95 treatises and precipitated the Protestant Reformation that shook the foundations of European society. The two events are critical to the formation of the Swiss watch-building industry.

Now, let’s introduce to the story the greatest of all French kings, the Sun King, Louis XIV. The Reformation unleashed centuries of religious wars and persecutions, and in the height of the Catholic-Protestant fight in France, Louis mandated that all the French Protestants (Huguenots) either convert to Catholicism or leave; the Huguenots, who dominated the nation’s clockmaker industry, chose to leave. Where to go? Just over the French border in Switzerland Geneva beckoned. The country had a history of neutrality—it was peaceful; it was not experiencing any religious warfare, and Protestants were welcomed.

Geneva was heavily influenced by John Calvin, the ascetic Protestant cleric and founder of Calvinism, whose teachings

forbade the wearing of ornamentation. Laws outlawing the wearing of jewelry made the city’s goldsmiths, jewelers, and enamelers unemployed; they quickly looked for another product. The newly arrived French watchmakers’ products were perfect. The ornamental but functional timepieces were not outlawed and an industry was born. The French Huguenots and Swiss goldsmiths built superb mechanical pieces that were the most beautiful in the world. The tradesmen combined to form a powerful business block that quickly dominated the watch-making industry.

But how does a small country continue to dominate an industry? It doesn’t. By 1800 England was producing the same number of watches as Switzerland (about 200,000 annually).

But by 1850, England continued at that rate while Switzerland’s production exploded by a factor of eleven (2,200,000 pieces). Why? Swiss innovation provided the ability to far out-produce its competitors.

The Industrial Revolution visited the watch industry when the Swiss invented a new system called “etablissage.” Different parts of Swiss watches were made in hundreds of mountain valley locations (division of labor), shipped to Geneva and assembled by the watch manufacturers. Switzerland was suddenly able to greatly expand production.

“Mass production” came to watch making. (The system continues with less costly Swiss watches to this day, but all parts of high-end Swiss watches are entirely fabricated in their own factories.) Switzerland was unscathed by World War II and by the end of the war, half of the world’s watches were produced in the factories of Switzerland. But that dominance was to drastically change within just a few decades. 1969 saw the introduction of the Japanese quartz watch; the era is referred to as “The Quartz Crisis.” Quartz watches are inexpensive and more accurate than the finest mechanical watches on Earth. Hundreds of Swiss firms closed. Within a ten year period, 1,600 Swiss firms were reduced to just 600. Aggressive Swiss executives merged to form a group to combine research & development, advertising & marketing, and manufactured lower-priced watches—some assembled without human interaction—to fight the new competition. The Swatch brand emerged and successfully fought off the low-priced competition. The hemorrhaging of bankruptcies stopped; the industry began to rebuild.

The higher-end Swiss brands survived and began to promote the status gained by wearing a superb mechanical timepiece.

The strategy worked. While the fad of the lower cost Swiss watches died, the high-end watches continued to thrive as the public has come to fall in love again with the marvel of a beautiful and remarkably accurate mechanical device worn on a wrist that is the culmination of five hundred years of watchmaking.

The fine Swiss watch of 1700 was a testament to the indomitable spirit of an evicted citizenry; the fine Swiss watch of today is a testament to the man or woman who appreciates the very finest the world has to offer. And when it comes to timepieces, that’s more than likely a Swiss fine watch.

Do you want your children or grandchildren to see the national parks before venturing abroad? Are you a nature lover? A wildlife lover? A fan of the Wild West? A besotted grandparent? A parent intent on avoiding amusement parks? Whatever your motivation, Tauck provides the answer with their Bridges tours to our national parks and monuments. In these escapades, the travel company unites families—sometimes parents and children, more often grandparents and grandchildren, and sometimes a multigenerational grouping of grandparents, parents, and children/grandchildren. All combinations work, thanks to the expertise and experience of the Tauck tour directors.

On our “Cowboy Country” tour of the Grand Tetons, Yellowstone, and Mt. Rushmore, our group of 41 included three sets of parents and their children, more grandparents with grandchildren, and one set of grandparents, parents and children. We took a granddaughter age 6 and a grandson age 9 – and thanks to a creative tour director who came up with ice-breakers at our very first get-together, both grandchildren bonded with the girls or boys (gender specific groupings, definitely). From day three onward, our twosome would wake up, ask if they could eat at the boys’ table or the girls’ table, and hurry to dress and get over to the lodge dining room. All the kids loved the buffet—choosing their favorites without a whole lot of parental supervision—and then eating in their own worlds, 9 girls from age 6-17 and 8 boys from 7 to 14. Meanwhile, their parents and grandparents were free to enjoy a leisurely breakfast, all the while keeping an eye on the young ones in our care. By the time we began the day’s organized activity, the oldsters and youngsters were contented lots. In fact, even on the bus, the girls all sat together, and our grandson sat with his two fellow musketeers in a seat intended for two, while grandpop and grandmom drank in the scenery and chatted with other parents and grandparents. We had not anticipated such heaven.

DAY 1 | We arrived in Jackson, Wyoming where we were told the luggage would be picked

up in front of the terminal— as in outside. It is a small airport, but that was a first for us. A knowledgeable driver met us and provided a running commentary on the area—the Grand Tetons, the role of the Rockefellers in preserving so much of this area, and the Snake River, familiar to many, thanks to Ansel Adams’ black and white photographs. We drove to Jackson Lake Lodge, our home for the next few nights, where we enjoyed a swim in their large, outdoor pool and then a barbecue dinner, al fresco, with the snow-capped Tetons clearly in view. This was July, and we were expecting temperatures in the 70s and 80s, but most days were closer to high 80s—and very comfortable. Nights were decidedly cooler. The settings are beyond beautiful, but it’s the activities and wildlife that intrigue the younger set. Because the waters are glacial, there’s no swimming in Jackson Lake or Jenny Lake, but the kids loved the pool at Jackson Lake Lodge. And Yellowstone provides a feast of wildlife—from bison and elk, to bear and moose.

Especially wonderful with young ones in tow were the walkways and stone walls, just outside the dining room windows.

When the younger set finished breakfast, they would head out to those walkways and stone walls, which were bordered with shrubbery providing hiding places for ground squirrels, who look like small prairie dogs. Luckily only a few adults witnessed the arrival of a fox who darted into the shrubbery and out again—with a ground squirrel in his mouth. The young ones were observing other squirrel families frolic and cavort.

On our way to Yellowstone, we saw our one and only bear—a black bear that crossed the highway with impunity and inspired screams of delight in our bus. We were the second vehicle in what locals call a “bear jam,” as videos, cameras and cell phones documented the stroll of the blasé beast.

Once inside Yellowstone, though, we were overwhelmed by sightings—elk, deer, moose, bison, including a stampede of bison on their way somewhere. An amazingly agile beast, the bison can run 35 miles an hour—and is not to be trifled with. We also learned that buffalo have never grazed in this country, but because the beast resembles the bison, even locals tend to use the terms interchangeably.

After breakfast, we embarked on our ten-mile float trip on the Snake River, occasionally encountering gentle white rapids. The ranger was terrific with the young ones, inviting each one to man/ woman the oars, more or less steering the boat (a large raft that held 12 of us)—and pointing out eagle nests, and the hiking trails on the Grand Tetons which were always in view.

DAY 5 | We’re off to cowboy country, a journey along

That afternoon, we bused into Jackson Hole, where we admired the four elk-antler arches at the entrances to the town square, visited a few of the galleries—and got prime seats for the shoot-out, in which we were treated to some dancing and singing by artists performing in the nearby musical, and then, much to the delight of the young set, the music gives way to the cacophony of “bullets” flying in every direction.

The scene ends with more “bodies” strewn over the intersection than appear at the end of “Hamlet,” and the female sheriff is about the only one left standing. Back to the lodge for another glorious meal with the backdrop of the Grand Tetons—and ground squirrels.

DAY 3 | On our way to Yellowstone, we drove by Jenny Lake, formed more than 12,000 years ago by glacial activity, and a sparkling gem that lures lots of fly-fishermen. Established in 1872 as the United States’ first national park, Yellowstone was the first of its kind in the world. A little known fact: while everyone credits Teddy Roosevelt and John Muir for their conservation efforts, it was Ulysses S. Grant who was responsible for Yellowstone. And what a park it is.

winding mountain roads from Yellowstone to Cody, the rodeo capital of the world. Founded by frontiersman Buffalo Bill Cody in 1896, Cody is a cornucopia of treats for young and old. The Buffalo Bill Historical Center, which bills itself as a “celebration of the spirit of the American West,” more than lives up to its billing. Most of the men in our group gravitated toward the firearms collection, everyone loved the Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney Western art collection (where the younger set created art on computers and on blank postcards provided by the center), and all enjoyed clips of Wild West shows, exhibits featuring animals and the homes of the Plains Indians. Best of all, the cowboys and cowgirls on our tour got to shoot pistols and rifles in the museum’s kids’ gallery, making sure to tally their hits and share their triumphs with each other.

After a wonderful barbecue dinner, we were off to the Cody Wild West Rodeo where we gladly stomped our feet and clapped our hands, sang the Star Spangled Banner, and watched calf-roping, bucking broncos and bulls, clowns, precision—and fast—horseback riding and more. Best of all, the young folk were called down to the floor of the arena.

Once they were lined up across the entire field and briefed on the ribbon-grabbing rules, the real cowboys released two calves, each with a ribbon on its tail. The winners would be the two who first managed to grab a ribbon. What a great experience to end to our cowboy venutre.

The Old Faithful Inn, just steps from the park’s most famous geyser (which does indeed shoot a plume of steam skyward every 90 minutes) reminded my husband and me of the Ahwanee in Yosemite. Both feature massive stone fireplaces and towering lobbies. Built in 1904, the Inn is a rustic work of art topped only by the endless wonders that lie beyond its log and wood-shingle walls. We took the geyser walk, on paths and boardwalks, arriving back at Old Faithful exactly 90 minutes after we set out—for our second viewing of this natural phenomenon.

DAY 4 | After a wonderful breakfast—buffet, of course, for the grandchildren who finished everything THEY chose—we were off to see hot springs, waterfalls, endless forests, lots of wildlife, and, we learned, that two-thirds of all geysers in the world are right here in Yellowstone. The young female rangers were enthusiastic and knowledgeable—and terrific with all ages (we ranged from 6 to 80). We followed the Firehole River until we arrived at the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone, carved by the churning waters of the Yellowstone River, plunging over a thousand feet with miles of magnificent gorges and torrential waterfalls. Much more colorful than I remembered the Grand Canyon to be, it has inspired such artists as Thomas Moran and Albert Bierstadt, both of whom maintained they failed to capture its beauty—but their watercolors and oils certainly impressed us.

A dark, littered alley leads to a wooden door with peeling green paint. It’s unmarked— no sign or street number or other identifying symbol. You open it and climb a set of dim, creaky stairs, then make your way down a woodpaneled hallway. A heavy linen curtain hangs down, hiding a doorway. You push it aside, and find an oasis concealed in this otherwise seedy building. A dark walnut bar sits flush against the back wall, its shelves an apothecary of tinted, mismatched bottles. A dapper bartender lovingly mixes together gin, lavender, and lime, carefully pouring his potion over delicately chiseled spheres of ice.

People sit in low leather chairs, chatting and sipping from highball glasses. Just when you think you’ve stepped back in time, someone pulls out an iPhone and snaps a selfie. Welcome to the twenty-first century speakeasy. Retro is in vogue, and modern speakeasies satisfy our fascination with the free-for-all Roaring Twenties, an era many imagine was one endless Gatsbyesque party. And in an age where bar lines can be five deep on a Friday night and watery cosmos $10 a pop, people are thirsting for something different, a more intimate setting that serves drinks mixed with quality liquor and an ingredient other then cranberry juice. The original speakeasies were what kept Americans in their cups during Prohibition. In 1919, the ratification of the 18th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution banned the manufacture, transportation, and sale of liquor. By 1920, the country officially went dry, but there were plenty of people who weren’t ready to give up the bottle and found innovative ways to keep the liquor flowing. Bootlegging—the illegal manufacture and sale of liquor—and organized crime went hand in hand, and speakeasies popped up in major cities and rural towns alike. There were hole-in-the-wall places that consisted of a table, chairs, and a barrel of bathtub gin, and there were prestigious places like The Stork Club in New York City that catered to the moneyed, glamorous crowd. They were located in attics, store basements, rooming houses, and private homes, and required complicated knocks, strings of passwords, and flimsy paper membership cards to enter. Any hidden place where you could buy a drink away from the prying eyes of police and Prohibition agents would do.

Speakeasies made their mark on American culture too. Before prohibition, only “immoral” women drank at bars. But in speakeasies, women were welcome to sip their Gin Rickeys without judgment, a trend that continued after bars were legally reopened. Some joints provided entertainment, and jazz music drifted from New Orleans and filtered into northern cities, where it became a roaring success. Cocktails that are considered classics today, like sidecars and Tom Collins, were invented and mixed in backrooms to mask the harsh taste of pure homespun spirits.

Prohibition ended in 1933. The 21st amendment passed, and bars returned to pouring legal drafts and shaking lawful martinis. But almost a century later, speakeasies have snuck back into existence. The last five years have seen them spread across the country from coast to coast. Some are more a homage to the original, with low lighting and a ginheavy cocktail menu. Others have aimed for a more authentic feel, where cell phone use is discouraged, the bar space is compact, and finding the secret entrance could take a while if you’re not in the know. Here for your imbibing pleasure are three modern speakeasies that are worth finding.

THE RED PHONE BOOTH | NASHVILLE, TN Ignore the bachelorettes and party buses cruising through downtown and step into the anachronistic red British telephone box. Dial the number you’ve been lucky enough to receive from a hotel concierge, foodie friend, or member.

Then enter into a refined space of custom Italian leather couches, hand-painted ceiling, and a honey onyx bar. Take your time perusing the craft cocktail list (drinks start around $12) that includes rare bourbon, whiskey, scotch, and gin; just know your drink won’t arrive immediately. Juices are freshly squeezed and ice goes through a hand chipped double-reverse osmosis. For those needing a nibble, small plates and Neapolitan-style pizzas are available. And for those wanting the full experience, a walk-in humidor offers 100+ cigar labels for guests’ smoking pleasure. Memberships available, dress code for men and women required.

EL CARAJO | MIAMI, FL

Most gas station fare consists of packaged junk food and meat sticks on rollers. El Carajo––The Crow’s Nest––in Coconut Grove takes your taste buds on an upscale trip to Southern Spain. Attached to a Mobil gas station (yes, you really can fuel up in more ways than one here), make your way past the mini-mart’s chewing gum and cigarette counter, and enter a brick-lined backroom filled with wine bottles and enticing smells. Wine is the preferred way to imbibe here, and El Carajo has their own Somm who curates and helps you choose from one of the largest selections in South Florida. Need a bite to balance all the vino? Order traditional tapas like Dátiles Envueltos en Tocino (bacon-wrapped dates), Frituras de salmón (salmon fritters), and of course, Patatas Bravas (spicy fried potatoes). Still hungry? Delectable charcuterie boards piled with fresh Spanish cheeses and cured meats are available, too. Reservations recommended.

ATTABOY | NASHVILLE, TN

A minimalist brick building, bare except for olives taking a swim in a martini glass, is actually standard for East Nashville. You’ll experience that speakeasy vibe when you see the wooden door that asks you to “Please knock gently” and you’re whisked through a black curtain to a dimly lit bar. There is no menu; drinks are personalized, based on your taste preferences and chilled with block ice, though the full bar is sure to satisfy every palette. The vibe is upscale dive lounge, with a dash of hipster (it is East Nasty, after all). Though Attaboy originated in NYC, this location has recently celebrated four years, and has come into its own. First come, first serve basis. Parties of six or less only. No reservations required.
