KING JEWELER’S NASHVILLE

T

he King family is  proud and excited to share our 2016 edition of King Jeweler’s Lifestyle Magazine. This year has flown by and it’s hard to believe that our Nashville Salon will be celebrating the 8th anniversary this holiday season. We have emerged as the premium, luxury jewelry destination of the Central South region.

Our clientele is quite extensive and we would like to thank the entire Nashville community for their support, friendship, and loyalty in helping us grow with this amazing city. Our family has always believed
strongly in giving back to the community.  We are proud to support several organizations that are integral to Middle Tennessee and include Second Harvest Food Bank, Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt, and the Predators Foundation, just to name a few. In addition, our passion for the arts is reflected with an annual sponsorship of the Frist Museum and the Nashville Symphony Ball.

Overall, the Nashville salon had an extremely fun and active year. We had the honor of hosting the World Cigar Smoking Championship, the first one ever held in the United States. We also created the Nashville limited edition of Raymond Weil’s GIBSON Nabucco watch, we added the TUDOR timepiece line, launched our official KJ5 in-house bridal collections, opened a new Cartier Espace, relaunched our new e-commerce website, and continue as the Official Jewelers of The Nashville Predators (NHL). As you can see, we have been quite busy!

 |

Our extensive diamond collection has made us the leading diamond store in middle Tennessee with our diverse collection of colorless and idealcut diamonds graded by leading authorities such as GIA and Forevermark. We carry a large collection of bridal engagement ring and wedding band designers while continuing to hand-craft custom jewelry designs. We are just one of eight exclusive jewelers designated as a Forevermark Exceptional Diamond Dealer by DeBeers.

King Jewelers caters to a luxury lifestyle while at the same time has something to accommodate any budget. The Nashville salon features fine jewelry designers that include John Hardy, Mikimoto, Roberto Coin, Marco Bicego, Ippolita, Chopard, and Kwiat. We are also authorized watch dealers for over twenty fine Swiss brands from Rolex, Cartier, Hublot, Breitling, IWC, Jaeger- LeCoultre, and TAG Heuer plus many others.

The Nashville staff is outstanding, warm, friendly, and inviting, but most of all very knowledgeable. We offer world class watch repairs by our certified, in-house watch maker. Our in-house master jewelers perform expert repairs, custom design, and redesign services on premise.

We welcome you to come in and discover what King Jewelers is all about. We look forward to meeting you and your families. King Jewelers wish all of you a year filled with good health and sparkling memories!

Forevermark Exceptional Diamonds at King Jewelers Carry a Promise of Forever

THE PROMISE BY CAROL BESLER

Forevermark Diamonds has resurrected De Beers Group of Companies’ iconic “A Diamond Is Forever” slogan this holiday season.

F

“Forevermark has unveiled a powerful new campaign that aims to highlight the brand’s driving belief in the power of a promise, and why only a Forevermark diamond can truly convey consumers’ most important promises in life,” says Stephen Lussier, CEO of Forevermark.

orevermark, the diamond brand from the De Beers Group of Companies, was born out of “A Diamond Is Forever.” “Diamonds have long represented the eternity of love. Now, Forevermark carries the promise of forever to a new generation,” says Scott King, CEO of King Jewelers Less than 1percent of the world’s diamonds are eligible to carry the Forevermark inscription, proof of the promise that each diamond is beautiful, rare, and responsibly sourced. The Forevermark Exceptional Diamond collection represents the pinnacle of that promise: some of the earth’s most magnificent creations, in carat weights that demonstrate just how magical and stunning nature’s beauty can be. Each diamond in Forevermark’s Exceptional Diamond Collection represents one in a million,

|

with only an exclusive group of Forevermark jewelers in the United States authorized to sell them. King Jewelers is one of those dealers. The Forevermark diamond journey begins at the mine, where rough diamonds are extracted from deep within the earth. Each mine produces a wide range of rough diamonds, but only the highest quality rough material will be cut into a Forevermark diamond and inscribed with a unique identification number. The Forevermark Exceptional Diamond is even more exclusive in terms of size, quality and color. Forevermark and Forevermark Exceptional Diamonds are guaranteed to be responsibly sourced from carefully selected mines in countries that are committed to the highest business, social, economic, and environmental standards. The journey of each one of these exceptional diamonds has

been carefully documented for consumers to experience. Each diamond is presented with a customized booklet that details every step of its journey, beginning with the approximate era when it was created deep within the earth. Using custom copy and stunning visuals, key milestones in the diamond’s life are showcased. Diamonds in the Forevermark Exceptional Diamond program were hand selected from amongst the most spectacular rough diamonds in the world and manufactured by master diamond cutters from New York-based Julius Klein Group and Premier Gem. Forevermark diamond jewelry is sold at over 400 leading jewelry stores across the United States and Canada, and in more than 1,650 doors worldwide. Forevermark Exceptional diamonds are sold at an extremely select number of Forevermark jewelers in the United States. TILER PECK

Out of

INDIA

On a trek for tigers and adventure in the jewel of the desert BY TERRY COLBY

U

nder a searing afternoon sun, red dust covering my clothes and clinging to the sweat clotting at the back of my neck, I head deep into Ranthambhore National Park, hunting grounds for maharajahs of old and modern-day royals. I’m on my very first safari, on my first trip to India, and ready for the

|

thrill of coming face-to-face with a tiger. The guide, Yadvendra Singh, who goes by the name Yad, directs the driver down increasingly bumpy pathways through the dry terrain of the park, six of us in an open-air Gypsy vehicle that feels at times like a combination roller coaster-Tilt-AWhirl, as we track tiger in the heart of India’s desert state of Rajasthan.

PAGE EIGHTEEN

|

Early on, Yad and our safari partners — Stuart and Rebecca Ramsey, from York, England — hear a tiger’s roar. My husband and I didn’t hear it, but all three were convinced, so our truck picks up speed and kicks up dust heading in the direction of the roar. After some frenzied but fruitless minutes tracking the sound, things settle down and we begin a more deliberate course through the park, 252 square miles of dry deciduous forest in the Aravali hills with shallow lakes and rivers, and plenty of valleys and ravines that are hospitable to the roughly 30 Royal Bengal tigers that call this park home. Yad is a bona fide Indian character, telling us of the famous people he has helped search for tigers — Mick Jagger, for one — and that he is yadtiger on “the Facebook,” where he announces he has precisely 1,732 friends. As we first enter the park, he begins his schtick: “Wow, look at those two-legged homo sapiens.” Several hours on and we’ve seen an amazing mix of wildlife — great numbers of Indian varieties of deer, wild boar, crocodile, egrets, peacocks, monkeys, parakeets, an owlette, antelopes, and mongoose — and Yad supplies us with the scientific name for each. But we’ve seen no sign of tiger. Rebecca is feeling ill, no doubt because of all the jostling around in the 100-degree heat, but she doesn’t want to head back. We have no more safaris scheduled.

|

The sun is sinking toward the horizon, shadows growing longer, and still no tiger. This was it. Six o’clock was the witching hour — we had to be out of the park. After a few words from Yad, the driver heads to the park entrance where Yad chats up two park rangers, gesturing to us in the jeep before jumping back in. “OK, we look down here,” he says. One more chance. A few miles and a quick left takes us up a gently rising, tree-covered grassy space. The driver cuts the engine. We are facing some of the stone ruins that dot the park. Yad is very excited. Everyone stands. A tiger is lounging in the sun, sprawled atop part of a stone wall. I don’t see it at first, but when the tail moves, I catch a glimpse of the tail and of the white fur on the tiger’s belly. A flash of white. I had seen the tiger. Next stop, back to camp. But don’t imagine we’ll be slugging beer around a campfire before pulling back the tent flap and climbing into our sleeping bags. Our tent — and indeed it is a canvas tent — has a four-poster, king-sized bed, teak wood floors, colonial-style wood furniture, a claw-foot tub, air-conditioning, and a private outdoor garden and dining area. You see, we are staying at the Oberoi Vanyavilas, Ranthambhore, ranked the best hotel in the world in 2010 by readers of Travel & Leisure magazine.

PAGE NINETEEN

|

What makes a hotel the best in the world? The 25 tents are the only accommodations at this hotel and they are amazing — spacious, at 790 square feet, luxurious, and very private. The interior canvas of the tent is embroidered with images of tigers and trees, and flecks of gold glitter in the light. But there’s more than just the tents. At Oberoi’s Vanyavilas there’s a spa, fine dining, a lovely pool, and luxurious lounge areas throughout the facility where staff take care of the resident peacocks along with the mango and lime trees. There are activities including wildlife lectures, cooking demonstrations, trips to craft centers, and rides on the two Oberoi pet Elephants. The night we returned from safari, we headed to dinner in the hotel’s openair dining room, where tables and chairs cushioned with the region’s bright red fabrics surrounded an open fire. At one side of the room, a cross-legged Rajasthani musician played his flute, sending the ethereal notes into the starfilled sky. Even now, it’s easy to recall the magic of those moments.

|

The food was exceptional, thanks to chef Deep Mohan Singh Arneja, who also is around to offer cooking demonstrations to guests. Among the memorable food items served at Vanyavilas during our stay was a tandoor chicken wrap, a Thai chicken salad, lamb and fish curries, spiced okra, spectacular garlic naan, and a little extra that really tickled my husband’s fancy: sorbet of Earl Grey and mint. The spa delivers traditional Ayurvedic treatments as well as Western-style facials and massages. The best hotel in the world doesn’t come cheap. Rates at the end of March are the equivalent of about $920 U.S. per night. Meals are not included. But this is a once-in-a-lifetime kind of vacation, and you won’t be disappointed if you’re looking for a luxurious adventure and you’re willing to splurge. We’ll definitely plan a repeat if the budget allows.

JONO’S 13 HOURS Jono King minds the family timepieces

One of the great highlights of my year is traveling to Switzerland, home of everything horology, to view the newest watch releases, innovative novelties and track trends. This year was exceptional as brands such as Breguet celebrated the 200 year anniversary of the Marine collection and Louis Moinet introduced the world’s first chronograph base movement timepiece featuring time is the complication! True to form, DeWitt presented “Flying Time” to reflect that even fine watchmaking cannot prevent time from moving so quickly.

BY CAROL BESLER

A

mong Breitling’s recent introductions is the Emergency II, the second in a series of watches that save lives. The Emergency was first launched in 1995 and is the only watch with an antenna, sending messages through an international satellite alert system to search and rescue stations. So far, the watch has been instrumental in saving several lives. The Emergency II is an updated version that sends messages on two frequencies, the second, new frequency offering more comprehensive data, making it the world’s first wristwatch with a dual frequency locator beacon. It’s called a Personal Locator Beacon, or PLB. The idea is an extension of the brand’s pilot’s watches, signalling the location of pilots or passengers following a plane crash.

IN THE HEAT OF ACTION, THERE ARE THOSE WHO TRUST THEIR LUCKY STAR – AND THOSE WHO PREFER THE EMERGENCY, THE WORLD’S FIRST WRISTWATCH WITH BUILT-IN PERSONAL LOCATOR BEACON. Equipped with a dual frequency micro-transmitter, this high-tech survival instrument serves to trigger search and rescue operations in all emergency situations – on land, at sea or in the air. The first ever personal locator beacon designed for wrist wear, meaning literally on you at all times, it shares your feats around the globe while guaranteeing maximum safety. ZENITH

THE ZENITH EL PRIMERO CHRONOMASTER.

SALUTES THE ROLLING STONES

Zenith Watch Manufacture is one of Switzerland’s elite heritage brands. It was founded in Le

Locle, Switzerland, in 1865 by watchmaker George Favre-Jacot and was officially named Zenith (the highest point of a star’s path) in 1911. The brand’s accomplishments include creating the world’s first pocket chronograph in 1899; a first prize for watchmaking innovation at the Paris World’s Fair in 1900; the launch of the legendary caliber 135 in 1948, for which the brand claimed several prizes in the Swiss Observatory chronometry competition; the invention in 1969 of the El Primero, the world’s first integrated automatic chronograph (used by several famous brands at some point, including Rolex and Panerai); and the launch of the El Primero Striking 10th, the caliber that measures and displays 1/10th of a second. In 2000, Zenith was acquired by the LVMH Group. One of the brand’s most sought-after models is the Type 20 GMT Pilot’s watch. In the 1930s, Zenith created watches which adhered to the strict standards of the aviation industry

THE ZENITH TYPE 20 GMT PILOT’S WATCH.

for use by pilots. The watch had to have a crown built for gloved handling, a large dial, oversized Arabic numerals, and lots of luminescent coating. They also had to withstand fluctuations in temperature and atmospheric pressure, magnetic fields, and violent jolts. This standard became known as “Type 20.” The Type 20 GMT has all the hallmarks of the standard pilot’s watch, according to Type 20 standards, but it has a modern, state-of-the-art movement — Zenith’s automatic movement — the Elite Caliber 693. It has a 50-hour power reserve, and functions include hours, minutes, small seconds, and 24-hour dual-time indication.

The Zenith El Primero Chronomaster 1969 is a tribute to the brand’s original 1969 edition

with the historical colors. It contains the new El Primero automatic Caliber 4061, a columnwheel chronograph, certified by COSC for accuracy to chronometer standards.

There is also a rock ’n’ roll edition of the El Primero. A special Rolling Stones edition features

the band’s logo engraved on the rotor, visible through the sapphire caseback. The case is titanium, with a DLC (Diamond-Like Carbon) finish, and the dial is black. The black strap, made of calfskincovered rubber, is embossed with the Union Jack flag. The watch also contains Caliber 4061, with a 50-hour power reserve, and it is water resistant to 100 meters. The El Primero Chronomaster 1969 Tribute to the Rolling Stones is limited to 1,000 pieces. THE ZENITH EL PRIMERO CHRONOMASTER TRIBUTE TO THE ROLLING STONES.

Pasquale Bruni was drawn into the world of jewelry as a young boy who rapidly learned the secrets of the goldsmith’s trade and mastered its techniques. After working in his family’s secondgeneration workshops, he started his own business, Gioielmoda, in 1976. It was renamed Pasquale Bruni SpA in 1997. Four years later, Pasquale Bruni’s daughter, Eugenia Bruni, became creative director, and his son Daniele Bruni is now the company’s gemologist. These three distinct personalities are united by the same passion: a love of jewelry. Sophisticated, with unique shapes, rare gems and shimmering diamonds characterize the distinctive, unusual yet harmonious style of the designer’s collections.

|

What inspires these beautiful jewels? “The love of nature and passion for the feminine, color and shape, flowers, moons, stars, infinite creativity of dreams, and the overwhelming emotions of the heart,” muses Eugenia. “Each one of our creations is more than a simple precious object. It is a work of art that charms with its tiny details. It reflects every woman and tells every woman’s story.” Pasquale adds, “We take enormous pride in what we create, pride born from a commitment to deliver excellence in design and quality.” The new collection Giaradini Segreti is inspired by the gardens of Milan. Flowing golden leaves and precious stones embrace specialty-cut central stones in the typical shape of five-petal flowers, creating harmoniously designed rings and necklaces. The Bon Ton Collection is also inspired by the natural world, using a combination of colors to evoke soft flowers. Bon Ton is available in long necklaces, earrings, bracelets, and rings.

women buy

THEIR OWN W

omen are not waiting for someone else to buy them fine jewelry. They’re buying what they like, when they want. They trust their own taste, and they want tangible evidence of their independence and success. It’s no coincidence that the rise in self-purchases of fine jewelry has coincided with historic numbers of financially independent women. In fact, women now control $20 trillion in annual consumer spending globally, cites Forbes. They’re transforming the marketplace, and that includes fine jewelry. A 2012 study by the market research firm Mintel reveals that more than half of the 2,000 women surveyed bought fine jewelry simply to treat themselves. But in case you need a good reason to splurge, we’ve come up with a few that should resonate with your best sensibilities.

UPDATE YOUR WARDROBE

T

here is no better way to update a wardrobe than with accessories, and no accessory achieves this task better than fine jewelry. The crisp white shirt and little black dress uniform is instantly fresh with a pop of color. Whether a Pantone pick or personal favorite, gemstones offer a spectrum of options in hue and price. A great pair of gemmy drop earrings or a statement necklace go a long way to changing the look. Unlike shoes and a handbag, which wear out over time, your investment in fine jewelry is timeless.

BUILD YOUR STYLE ARSENAL

E

very wardrobe has its key pieces that are foundations of your style. Similarly, there are certain styles no jewelry box should be without. Diamond studs, solitaire necklaces, and tennis bracelets; hoop earrings and gold chain; and stackable bangles and rings are the go-to, go-witheverything staples. And just as your closet has many versions of the LBD and white shirt, there are new takes on classic favorites — with the addition of color in gems and metals, diamond halos, twists, and textures that are perfect to mix and match as you build your jewelry wardrobe.

|

MARK A MOMENT

Y

ou landed the job. You got that promotion. You celebrated a milestone birthday. You’ve overcome a challenge. Whatever the occasion or circumstance, there is no better reward than precious gems and metals designed in fine jewelry. A personal talisman, power piece, and part of history, your jewelry is an expression of who you are. From engraveable charms and monograms to lockets and birthstones to an important ring or strand of pearls, what relays your story is uniquely you and something that can be passed down through the generations.

MAKE A STATEMENT

E

very wardrobe needs a WOW piece, a where-did-you-get-that, headturning attention grabber. Just like that amazing dress you splurged on that makes you look 10 pounds lighter, an outstanding jewelry design can make you feel 10 feet taller. From a strand of South Sea pearls to a sapphire and diamond parure and everything in between, your dream jewel is your signature piece for those occasions when making a statement is the imperative!

A bit about

BURGUNDY Less than two hours from Paris by train, Burgundy offers sightseers a beautiful glimpse into idyllic France, and no, it’s not all about the wine. The fortified villages, medieval

courtyards,

and

ancient Roman structures all shout that oft repeated lament, “Oh, if only the stones could talk!” HISTORY The legacy of Burgundy’s once powerful dukes is still very much in evidence today in Dijon and in the abbeys of Vezelay and Fontenay, along with the ruins of Cluny Abbey. The area around Cluny exhibits a host of Romanesque churches, all evidence of a rich and eventful past that still speaks to the receptive visitor even to today. Art enthusiasts will love browsing the Museum of Fine Arts, housed in the magnificent Palace of the Dukes of Burgundy. In addition to its fantastic aura of history, Burgundy is home to a frenetic and entertaining nightlife. To fully appreciate Burgundy, be sure to experience both of these aspects of the beautiful city.

PAGE FIFTY-FOUR

|

No trip to Burgundy would feel complete without taking a visit to some of the world-famous vineyards; they do, after all, produce some of the most sought-after and expensive wines in the world. ACCOMMODATION Accommodation options are plentiful in Burgundy. Why not choose to stay in a charming, rustic-style cottage? A cozy cottage makes the ideal place to come back to after a day’s sightseeing on a cold winter’s day, replete with a blazing open fire. Whatever your accommodation needs, Burgundy has options for all tastes and budgets. Whether you’re looking for something as simple as a hotel room, a traditional guest house, a bed and breakfast, or your very own snug cottage, there are enough holiday properties in Burgundy to provide the perfect base from which to enjoy your holiday in this charming part of France. OUTDOORS Burgundy can offer a diverse experience for visitors, with plenty of opportunities for outdoor pursuits. Le Morvan, for example, has magnificent lakes in which boat hire is readily available for a tranquil time amid the hills and forests. During the summer months, when temperatures average out at around 67 degrees, a day on the lakes can be absolutely stunning. Don’t forget to try the open-air markets as well — offering an authentic slice of French culture with their stalls of delicious regional foods and a never-ending variety of wines. WINE Of course, no trip to Burgundy would feel complete without taking a visit to some of the world-famous vineyards; they do, after all, produce some of the most sought-after and expensive wines in the world. Fine examples are located south of Dijon through to Côte de Beaune. Some of the smaller vineyards that produce the most expensive wines are penned in behind quaint rustic stone walls to protect their valuable produce. The Burgundy Wine Museum is a fantastic location for learning about the massive role wine has played in the history and development of the region. Located in the illustrious residence of the 13th to 16th century Burgundy dukes, the museum tells the story of Burgundy’s world-renowned wines from centuries past to the present day. Whether its Burgundy’s historical gems, its nightlife, its countryside, its wines, or more likely a little bit of each, a trip to this beautiful part of France is certain to provide many worthwhile memories.
