Coldwater Tropical Specialist Turtle & Terrapin Water Treatments

Feeding Goldfish

Goldfish are one of the most commonly kept fish; they’ve been kept as pets for over 2,000 years. Goldfish are a great starter fish for those beginning their fishkeeping journey, and there are a huge number of varieties to choose from.

Goldfish are coldwater fish that live well in a community, but they are highly competitive when it comes to food and are big waste producers. Our King British Goldfish Foods have a low waste formula, for cleaner, clearer water.

King British Goldfish Flake

A complete flake food for all goldfish made with a balanced blend of high-quality, natural ingredients, and rich in multivitamins to support a healthy immune system. The highly digestible, low waste formula helps maintain clearer water; ideal for high-waste producers such as goldfish.

Feeding Tropical Fish

With so many colours, shapes and behaviours to choose from, it’s little wonder that tropical fish are such a popular choice amongst fishkeepers. From species like mollies and guppies, which are ideal for beginners, to those that offer a little more of a challenge, like cichlids, there is a tropical fish to suit every fishkeeper.

In their natural environment, the majority of tropical fish would have an extremely varied diet, including algae, plants, crustaceans, insects and other fish. This variety ensures they receive a balanced diet, which is why we’ve carefully designed our tropical foods so that fishkeepers can easily replicate this in their aquariums, helping their fish achieve optimal health and vitality.

The term ‘tropical fish’ covers a wide spectrum of species, some of which, including cichlids and catfish, may be better served by the King British Specialist Range.

Specialist Foods

Specialist fish require more specific care, and therefore a more specialised diet, which is why we’ve created King British Specialist Foods. To successfully keep all fish healthy, it’s important to understand their requirements, but this is particularly crucial for certain tropical fish and marine fish. From the size they’ll grow to as adults to the pH requirements of the water, it’s important fishkeepers are given the correct information about the species they want to keep, and are prepared to invest extra time and energy accordingly. Regular water testing, observation and good quality nutrition will help to take care of the rest.

Feeding Catfish and Plecostomus

Here at King British, we all love catfish, with plecs being a firm favourite. Plecostomus, pleco, plec or even Loricariidae, whatever you prefer to call them, are the largest group of catfish, with hundreds of named species, and more being discovered each year. With their unique look, armour plating and characterful personalities, it’s easy to see how plecs have captured fishkeepers’ hearts. But one unfortunate side effect of the popularity of catfish and plecs is misconceptions about their needs, starting with them both being ‘the same’. Indeed, plecs are a family within the wider catfish order but

they have very different needs to other catfish families. Catfish as a whole are bottom-feeding carnivorous fish that have a reputation for being scavengers. Meanwhile, plecs are often herbivores or detrivores (meaning they feed on dead organic material, especially plant detritus), and have a reputation for eating algae. Even though catfish and plecs are different, their similar reputations of living off scraps and/or algae has led to both being seen as an ‘easy’ way to keep fish tanks clean. In reality, only a small number of catfish are beneficial in this way. Some of the best, most commonly available plecs for helping keep a tank clean are the Bristle Nose Catfish (Ancistrus spp.). Not only do they stay a fairly manageable size (12–15cm), they will do a great job of helping clean up an aquarium without producing too much waste in return. While catfish and plecs are a great addition to any tank’s clean-up crew, their eating habits have led to the common misconception that they don’t need additional food. Plecs and other types of catfish are true bottom feeders and will eat almost anything they can, helping to keep aquariums clean but this is not enough to sustain them. All catfish, regardless of their species, need a complete diet. For the catfish order as a whole, this includes a high-protein, specialist food. For plecs, this includes a

specialist plant-based food designed for suckershaped mouths. Plecs also require bogwood in their environment, as they use it as an important source of fibre. Lack of nutritional understanding is one of the biggest causes of death amongst catfish and plecs. Aquatics retailers have a responsibility to make consumers aware of their requirements, and as an aquatics manufacturer, we have a responsibility to provide education, support and high-quality products. That is why King British have created the Specialist Food Range, which includes King British Algae Wafers and King British Catfish Pellets, which are tailored to meet the nutritional needs of all catfish, while King British Plecostomus Tablets have been created specifically for plecs. These foods all have a high protein, low waste formulation, and sink rapidly through the water column to where the fish would normally feed.

Specialist Foods

Feeding Cichlids

Cichlids are mainly found in West Africa, the rift valley lakes of East Africa, South America and Central America, with a few also found in Asia and Madagascar. With new species being discovered every year, over 2,000 have already been described. Cichlids, also known as the Cichlidae family, are one of the largest vertebrate families in the world. Although there are many different species of these fascinating fish, fishkeepers often give the same care to all types of cichlid which is when problems can arise. For example, the boisterous mbuna from the hard water Lake Malawai requires very different care to the peaceful shy, dwarf cichlids from the soft waters of South America, but both are from the Cichlidae family.

With such a wide variety of sizes, colours and body shapes, there are cichlids which are suitable for most aquariums, although some species should only be kept by the most experienced aquarists. Like all fish, different species have different requirements when it comes to water quality, feeding and behaviour. Most cichlids are voracious feeders (although Discus and Angelfish are well-known for being more

reserved eaters). In the wild, most cichlids would graze all day on whatever is available; even predominantly herbivorous fish will sometimes tuck into insects and other small creatures. Feeding in this way is difficult to simulate in aquariums but is still important. Like most fish, smaller cichlids like Discus need to feed little and often, whereas more predatory cichlids, such as Oscars, can eat larger meals less frequently (for example once or twice a day).

Cichlids are often territorially aggressive, an instinct that exists to ensure each cichlid acquires enough food. While useful in the wild, it’s not as welcome in a community tank; regular feeding 2–3 times a day (or as directed on the pack) will help to keep tempers in check.

To cater for all sizes of cichlid, we have created King British Cichlid Flake and King British Cichlid Sticks. The flake is ideal for fishkeepers with smaller cichlids, such as the Rams and Kribs, while the sticks are perfect for those with larger species like Oscars and Central American Cichlids. An important thing to remember and communicate with fishkeepers is that any commercial diet is nutritionally superior to any food source found in the wild, so they should stick to the recommended feeding amounts on the pack.

Going away?

Fish can survive for relatively long periods of time on very little food, as they have to do in the wild from time to time, but no fishkeeper wants to let their beloved pets go hungry. King British Holiday Food Blocks and King British Weekend Feeders are the ideal way to provide fish with sufficient nutrition while their owners are away. The blocks are made with high-quality natural ingredients, including spirulina, herring meal and salmon oil, and contain all the necessary proteins, minerals and trace elements to keep fish healthy, active and colourful.

The blocks remain stable in water, meaning they will not cloud the water or affect the water quality. The fish simply nibble at the block when they are hungry to release pieces of delicious food.

Suitable for all coldwater and tropical fish.

Caring for Turtles & Terrapins

Turtles and terrapins are fascinating aquatic pets that bridge the gap between fishkeepers and reptile keepers. There are many different species of turtle and terrapin, all of which have slightly different environmental, nutritional and behavioural needs.

Feeding an inappropriate diet and giving incorrect care can lead to serious health problems in turtles. As an aquatic manufacturer, we’ve carefully formulated a complete range of products to support turtle and terrapin health, and are regularly creating educational content for turtle keepers.

The biggest requirements of a turtle are:

• The correct nutrition

• Both water and land areas, including a basking area

• Access to both UVA and UVB light

All of these factors are linked to the overall health of a turtle, and their importance should be impressed upon anyone thinking of keeping them as pets.

Caring for Turtles & Terrapins

Different turtles require different land and water setups. Some turtles are strong swimmers, spending a lot of time in the water and less time basking, while others spend most of their time on land but prefer shallower water. One thing all turtles require is access to a basking area, which allows them to warm up, dry out, and absorb UVA and UVB rays, all of which are needed to keep turtles healthy and happy.

As big waste producers, keeping the tank water clean and safe for turtles is essential. The principles for maintaining good water quality in a turtle tank are actually very similar to that of a fish tank; removing droppings and uneaten food, testing the water parameters regularly, conducting water changes and cleaning the tank.

Our King British Turtle & Terrapin Water Freshener can be used to help maintain clean, safe swimming water for turtles. Meanwhile, our King British Turtle & Terrapin Multi-Vit can be added to the water to help combat vitamin deficiencies.
