March 26th-28th, 2024 Tuesday-Thursday $799 Per Person (Based Upon Double Occupancy) $199 Single Supplement Day One: We’ll travel north, with a stop for lunch on self at Cameron Trading Post. A haven for travelers since 1916, this trading post boasts an expansive dining room, with a huge stone fireplace and tall picture windows, offering a view of the Little Colorado River Gorge. We’ll enjoy the ambience, along with a terrific menu that runs from burgers to salads, and includes local favorites, such as Navajo tacos and stews. After lunch we’ll explore the Grand Canyon via the East Entrance at Desert View—offering a unique opportunity to visit the world-famous Desert View Watchtower. Later we’ll travel to Kayenta, Arizona and check into the Kayenta Hampton Inn—home to Reuben Helflin’s Restaurant, where we’ll enjoy dinner on self. Day Two: Breakfast is included at the hotel. After breakfast we’re off to the visitor’s center where we’ll pile into jeeps for a 2.5 hour tour—more than 30 miles of secluded back-country to discover the restricted areas of Monument Valley—a sacred homeland to the Navajo—who are the Keepers of Monument Valley. We’ll learn about the history of the Anasazi, early Native American peoples, famously known for their petroglyphs, pictographs and their spectacular cliff dwellings. We’ll visit all of the famous monoliths of Monument Valley—The Mittens, John Ford’s Point, Three Sisters, North Window, Totem Pole, Yei Bi Cheis and Artist’s Point. These are the real life backdrops for Hollywood Westerns such as Stagecoach, The Searchers, How the West was Won, and so many more! Afterwards we’ll enjoy lunch on self at the visitor’s center. Midafternoon it’s back in the Transits, and we’ll head for Canyon de Chelly— pronounced canyon duh shay, where we’ll check into the Thunderbird Lodge. Owned and operated by the Navajo Nation, the historic Thunderbird Lodge will be our cozy headquarters for the night. We’ll take some time for a refresh before heading out. We’ll visit the South Rim of Canyon de Chelly and we’ll experience the sunset highlighting Spider Rock. Later we’ll return to the hotel restaurant for dinner, on self. Thunderbird Lodge sits on the site of a trading post that was built in 1896. The restaurant—housed in the trading post’s original building—famously serves traditional Native American dishes, along with American favorites. Day Three: Breakfast is on self at the hotel. After breakfast jeeps will arrive to take us on a half-day tour of Canyon de Chelly. We’ll be led by our Navajo guide, who will explain the significance of man-made structures and symbols while also sharing the natural points of interest. Heavy-duty six-wheel-drive touring vehicles are equipped with padded seats to provide a good experience. The tours stop frequently for photo opportunities, to visit ancient sites, Navajo farms and rock art. When the tour is over we’ll head back to the hotel for lunch, on self. (D) Overnight: Rapid City DAY 2: MOUNT RUSHMORE - CRAZY HORSE MEMORIAL This morning visit Mt. Rushmore, where remarkable sculptures of the faces of Washington, Jefferson, Roosevelt and Lincoln, each standing 60 feet high, are carved into the rugged granite mountainside to an incredible likeness of these former US presidents. Continue onto the Crazy Horse Memorial, still in progress, to view the giant mountainside sculpture of the famous Indian Chief astride his pony. This afternoon visit Custer State Park, a famous wildlife preserve. Home to a herd of 1,500 free roaming buffalo, Custer State Park is the perfect setting for our thrilling Buffalo Jeep Safari. Later we’ll enjoy dinner at the famous State Game Lodge, built 1920 and listed on the national register of historic places with past guests including Presidents Coolidge & Eisenhower. (B,D) Overnight: Rapid City DAY 3: DEVIL’S TOWER - DEADWOOD Today journey west into Wyoming to visit Devil’s Tower National Monument to view the 867 foot monolith. Return east into South Dakota to visit historic Deadwood, the 1876 hard scrabble gold mining and gambling camp. Once home to legendary figures, the likes of Wild Bill Hickok, Calamity Jane and Seth Bullock, the entire city of Deadwood is today, a national historic landmark. Later drive through beautiful Spearfish Canyon, a scenic journey into the Black Hills. (B) Overnight: Rapid City DAY 4: THE MAMMOTH SITE - THE JOURNEY MUSEUM This morning travel to The Mammoth Site in Hot Springs and explore the museum, housing the largest concentration of mammoth remains in the world—61 examples of the extinct wooly behemoth, a distant cousin of today’s elephant. Later visit Rapid City’s newest attraction, the city-owned $12 million The Journey Museum, which traces the geology of the Black Hills and tells the story of the people who inhabited these lands. The Journey features four museums, including the Sioux Indian Museum. Enjoy the remainder of the day at your own pace. (B) Overnight: Rapid City DAY 5: BADLANDS NATIONAL PARK - FORT HAYS Today explore Badlands National Park, located between the White and Cheyenne Rivers. This area is home to spectacular examples of weathering and erosion—fantastic ridges, cliffs and canyons of variegated color. Later explore the famously kitschy Wall Drug Store, known for its “Free Ice Water”. This afternoon visit the Fort Hays Dances with Wolves Movie Set, to see some of the original buildings used in the Oscar winning film. We’ll also enjoy a lively Chuckwagon Supper & Cowboy Show. Explore Hill City’s interesting Main Street before boarding The 1880 Train for a rail journey through legendary Wild West history and breathtaking scenery, on an authentic narrow gauge railroad dating back to the Black Hills Gold Rush. Later visit The Black Hills Gold Factory. Tonight’s special Farewell Dinner will be served at the K-Bar S Ranch, nestled into the beautiful Black Hills, just outside Keystone. In this natural wonderland, enjoy free time to traverse the trails where the wild things are, or go for a swim in the turquoise waters as wildlife rummages in the canopies. Later return to the hotel for an evening at leisure. See many different products grown in this area along the way such as pineapples and bananas. Arrive to Cano Blanco/ Pavona Pier, board your boat and cruise through the exotic Tortuguero Canals. Arrive at your lodge and enjoy an included lunch and check-in for a two-night stay. Later, embark on a guided visit to the quaint Tortuguero Village that stretches between guest houses, shops and restaurants. (L,D) DAY 10: TORTUGUERO NAT’L PARK This morning enjoy a guided walking tour through the local trails with some free time before lunch. In the afternoon, visit Tortuguero Nat’l Park and experience the “Amazon of Costa Rica” aboard small open boats with an opportunity to see macaws, sloths, monkeys and other native species. While on this spectacular boat cruise through the various canals be sure to keep an eye out for wildlife including howler monkeys, sloths, toucans, aquatic birds, crocodiles, caimans and exotic flora. It protects over 350 species of birds and mammals as well. Later enjoy free time before dinner to relax or explore on your own. Although they are sections of the same slot canyon, Upper Antelope Canyon and Lower Antelope Canyon are distinctly different, and nowhere are those differences more pronounced than in the manner of entering and walking through them. Upper Antelope Canyon—famous for its light beams and high canyon walls—is shaped like an upside-down V. It is narrow at the top and wider, some say less claustrophobic at the bottom. Lower Antelope Canyon is shaped like a V, in that it is very narrow at the bottom and wide at the top, allowing for more light. Of the two canyons, many people agree that Lower Antelope Canyon is more of an adventure, offering narrow passageways and plenty of exciting twists and turns. If Lower Antelope Canyon has been on your bucket list we’d love for you to join us on this small-group expedition. Here’s what you should consider: There are 5 sets of stairs, adding up to about 70 steps in total, leading you into the canyon. After reaching the bottom, there are 4 flights of stairs and a few small flights of 4-5 steps going back up. In total there are about 130 steps inside Lower Antelope Canyon. These stairways are made of metal and offer sturdy handrails on both sides. The initial descent into the canyon is steep, and people with an extreme fear of heights should think twice about trying them. It is about a 75-foot descent into the canyon. Photography on the stairs is not allowed and guests are encouraged to turn around and navigate the steps backward—ladder-style—if it feels more comfortable. Thousands of tourists travel through Lower Antelope Canyon every year and they all make it out! If you can navigate stairs in your daily life, you can do it in the canyon. After a refresh, we’ll head out for dinner on self at Hogan Family Restaurant where the menu offers American and Mexican favorites, as well as traditional Navajo dishes. Day Two: A hot breakfast is included at the hotel. After breakfast we’re off to enjoy a guided tour of Lower Antelope Canyon, followed by a visit to the world-famous Horseshoe Bend Overlook. One of the most sought after viewpoints in the American West—this U-shaped turn in the Colorado River forms a horseshoe shaped canyon upriver from the Grand Canyon National Park. It is one of the most photographed sites in Arizona and should not be missed by visitors to this region! Later we’ll return to Cameron Trading Post for lunch, on self, before heading for home with plenty of great sightseeing along the way.

“Southwest Adventure Series”

Historic Yuma February 15th, Thursday……………..$126

Eighty years before the Pilgrims stepped foot on Plymouth Rock, Europeans were living in Yuma—the safest place to cross the mighty Colorado River for hundreds of miles. Yuma is rich with multicultural heritage and amazing historic sites, including the notorious Yuma Territorial Prison, our first stop on this exciting tour. Authorized in 1875, with a construction budget of $25,000, the Yuma Territorial Prison only operated for 33 years, but that was long enough to leave behind a fearsome legacy. A total of 3,069 prisoners, 29 of them women, lived within the prison’s granite walls, surrounded by the powerful Colorado River and the unforgiving desert. After exploring the prison, we’ll head to the Colorado River State Historic Park—home to the Yuma Quartermaster Depot—once the beating heart of all military outposts in the American Southwest. At this site, beginning in 1864, on high ground above the Colorado River, the U.S. Army warehoused a six-month supply of food, clothing and ammunition for forts in Arizona, Utah, Nevada, New Mexico and Texas, along with more than 900 mules and their teamsters. Ocean vessels brought goods to the Gulf of California, where they were transferred to steamboats for the trip upriver to Yuma, then later dispersed overland by the legendary 20-mule teams. We’ll explore these historic sites, along with downtown Yuma, and we’ll stop by Lute’s Casino for lunch on self. A great favorite with the locals, Lute’s was built in 1901 as a general store, turned into a pool hall in 1920, and is now a no-frills greasy spoon—dishing up cheeseburgers, sandwiches and some traditional Mexican dishes. Founded in 1904 as a stagecoach stop, this fantastic destination is just a hop-skip-and-a-jump away, on the historic Apache Trail. We’ll arrive early to get seated on the BBQ Patio, where we’ll enjoy lunch on self, including burgers hot off the grill, Tortilla Flat’s famous chili and BBQ, of course. The entertainment on the BBQ Patio is legendary, as the Tortilla Flat Band takes the stage daily, providing old-time rock & roll, plus so much more. Castle Dome is located on the west side of the state of Arizona, between Quartzsite to the north, and Yuma to the south. Home to Arizona’s longest working mine, Castle Dome operated from 1862-1979, and at its peak had over 3,000 residents. Spanish conquistadors were the first to discover silver in this area in the 1600’s, but it wasn’t until the mid-1800’s that Americans began to mine rich silver deposits in Castle Dome, and more than nine million pounds of lead ore were extracted during both world wars, to meet the demand for bullets. The mines closed for good in 1979, but the story of Castle Dome was not over. Allen and Stephanie Armstrong bought the entire ghost town in 1993 and Allen, a former stone mason who had once built log cabins from found materials, had the exact set of skills to recreate this sprawling museum. We’ll tour 50 buildings, including a hotel, doctor’s office, church with functional bell tower, blacksmith shop, assay office, sheriff’s office, jail, and several saloons. Most of the artifacts on display were pulled from mine shafts. Allen “Club Style Series” has been exploring the more than 300 mine shafts, by rappelling, sometimes more than 250 feet, into the darkness to enter mining shafts loaded with artifacts—beautifully preserved by the right blend of temperature and humidity. Day One: We’ll leave the Valley with plenty of pit stops, on our way to Yuma, Arizona, where we’ll enjoy lunch on self at Lute’s Casino. Canadian Rockies & Glacier National Park August 4th-10th, 2024 $4149 (Based Upon Double Occupancy) Single Supplement ($1175) Includes Roundtrip Airfare Phoenix DAY 1: ARRIVE CALGARY Arrive in Calgary, meet your Tour Director and transfer to your hotel. Tonight enjoy a Welcome Dinner with fellow travelers. (D) Overnight: Calgary DAY 2: BUFFALO JUMP - GLACIER NATIONAL PARK Today travel south and visit Head Smashed-In Buffalo Jump. The interpretive center is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and bears witness to a custom practiced by native people of the North American plains for nearly 6000 years. Later enter Waterton Lakes National Park and see the historic and spectacularly situated Prince of Wales Hotel. Travel across the border into Montana and Glacier National Park. The isolated location of the park leads to fewer visitors during the summer season, making it a haven for some of the world’s endangered species such as the gray wolf and grizzly bear. Stay in the park and enjoy dinner this evening. (B,D) Overnight: Glacier National Park DAY 3: GLACIER NATIONAL PARK - KALISPELL/WHITEFISH This morning our destination is the heart of Glacier National Park, the Crown of the Continent. The excitement begins as you board a 1930’s Red Jammer Touring Car for a ride over the Going to-the-Sun Highway, acclaimed as one of the most beautiful roadways in the world. The 52-mile journey crosses the Continental Divide through Logan Pass at an elevation of 6,680 feet and includes the Weeping Wall and Birdwoman Falls along with many spectacular mountain vistas. We’ll stop at Lake McDonald for lunch on your own. Continue onto the Kalispell/Whitefish area of Montana for an overnight stay. (B) Overnight: Kalispell/ Whitefish Area DAY 4: KOOTENAY NATIONAL PARK - BANFF Head north through British Columbia along the western slope of the Canadian Rockies, into the heart of Canada’s great timberlands and Kootenay National Park. See the bright red walls of Sinclair Canyon and travel through Radium Hot Springs. Arrive in Banff for a three-night stay in the heart of the Call Your Reservations In—480-497-2478

Canadian Rockies. Banff is a resort town in the province of Alberta, located within Banff National Park. The peaks of Mt. Rundle and Mt. Cascade dominate its skyline. On Banff Avenue, the main thoroughfare, boutiques and restaurants mix with château-style hotels and shops. (B) Overnight: Banff DAY 5: BANFF - ICEFIELDS PARKWAY This morning travel north along much of the Icefields Parkway, situated between Lake Louise and Jasper, and considered one of the most scenic highways in the world. See a panorama of snowcapped mountain peaks, hanging glaciers, waterfalls, canyons and often wildlife such as moose, big-horn sheep and bear. Scale Bow Pass with a stop to see turquoise blue Peyto Lake. Then ride in the specially designed Ice Explorer on the 1000 foot-thick Athabasca Glacier, part of the Columbia Icefield. The experience features a guided tour of the glacier and engaging commentary about glaciers, the local ecosystem, and environmental changes. Return to Banff for an evening on your own in the lively yet quaint downtown area on Banff Ave. (B) Overnight: Banff DAY 6: LAKE LOUISE & BANFF TOUR - BANFF GONDOLA Today see two of the crown jewels of the Canadian Rockies: Moraine Lake & Lake Louise. First stop to view spectacular Moraine Lake and the Valley of the Ten Peaks. Next stop at the Chateau Lake Louise to explore and capture spectacular views and photos of Lake Louise & Victoria Glacier. Later enjoy a Banff Area Tour including Mt. Rundle, Bow Falls, Tunnel Mountain and the Hoodoos. Cap off another scenery filled day with a ride to the summit of Sulphur Mountain via the Banff Gondola. From the summit see six stunning mountain ranges and the sweeping Bow Valley before you, the views are nothing short of breathtaking. Tonight enjoy a memorable Farewell Dinner in the Banff area at a local restaurant with your fellow travelers.
