A Message from the President

Dear Reader, The members of the faculty at SUNY Old Westbury are at the forefront of our university’s ambition to intersect intellectual rigor and social justice.

Beyond the endless testaments from students about the tremendous contributions of our faculty to their own intellectual development, the broader academy recognizes regularly the cutting-edge scholarship of our faculty who lead at national and international levels. Our faculty are formidable, especially as scholars whose work seeks to change the world.

This anthology of SUNY Old Westbury’s faculty achievements, recognitions, scholarship and research, not only reflects their tremendous productivity, but also their character as purpose driven intellectuals and researchers. From every discipline and regarding every social concern, you will find our faculty tackling some of the world’s most pressing issues in this collection. This compilation reflects both their singular and collective pursuits as thinkers in search of transformational answers, and we are proud of the work that they do because it broadcasts our university’s contribution to the world, at the highest level.

Lisa Payton, Assistant Professor, American Studies/Media & Communications • “Truth be Told,” an Apple TV+ show starring Oscar-winner Octavia Spencer and Gabrielle Union. The show is airing now, and season three tells the story of missing Black and Brown girls who go uncovered by the media.

Kinning Poon, Assistant Professor, Biological Sciences • Two-year grant as Principal Investigator from the National Institutes of Health, division National Institutes of Child Health and Human Development, to pilot spatial gene transcriptomics. The preliminary data acquired from these studies will be used to apply for the National Institutes of Health’s competitive large research grant program (R01).

Presentations Kyle Anderson, Assistant Professor, History & Philosophy • Research on the Egyptian Labor Corps in Ypres, Belgium on the occasion of the opening of a new exhibit on the Middle East during the First World War at the world-famous In Flanders Fields Museum, September 2022. His paper, focused on the need to acknowledge subaltern resistance to colonialism without romanticizing it.

Christa DeVirgilio, Digital & Archives Librarian • A Digitization Grant, Preserving SUNY Old Westbury’s History: Digitizing student newspaper, the Catalyst which converted the entire collection of student newspapers to microfilm and digital images for inclusion in New York Heritage Digital Collections. We also participated in (LILRC) • Accessing Archives Project, where an archivist spent six weeks on site and processed, digitized, and described materials according to archival standards. We now have a searchable, digital, finding aid for the archive’s collections that can be accessed online by anyone through Empire Archive Digital Cooperative.
