Préface

Kim Waldron. Une autre femme_Another Woman est un ouvrage rétrospectif portant sur quinze années de pratique de l’artiste Kim Waldron. Le titre de cette publication fait référence à l’utilisation quasi constante de l’autoportrait par l’artiste. Ici, l’autre femme, c’est elle-même. Dans ce contexte, le titre doit rappeler la célèbre affirmation d’Arthur Rimbaud « Je est un autre » dans sa lettre à Paul Demeny datée du 15 mai 1871.

Remettant en question les frontières entre l’identité et altérité, cette formule paradoxale se traduit dans les récits de Waldron, en une dualité entre réalité et fiction, et s’enchevêtre aux difficultés posées par cette dualité.

Dans ses projets, elle devient cette autre femme, cette autre femme c’est l’aboutissement de ce devenir. Quand l’artiste devient politicienne, elle travaille réellement sur sa campagne électorale et y consacre tout son temps.

Pour devenir bouchère, l’artiste passe près d’un an à étudier la boucherie.

Les autoportraits de Kim Waldron se présentent sous de multiples formes, qu’ils soient photographiques, vidéographiques, lithographiques, littéraires ou même légaux dans le cas du projet Kim Waldron Limited.

Avec l’autoreprésentation, l’utilisation du corps en représentation s’adjoint aussi une dimension performative importante. C’est le travail de Waldron qui m’a fait comprendre que le corps est en action même quand il est immobile. Chacun de ces fragments, de ces moments qu’elle fixe en image suppose à juste titre un passé, un présent et un futur qui génère de multiples récits non seulement ancrés dans les actions qui y sont représentées, mais dans le corps même de l’artiste. Son corps évolue et se transforme avec sa démarche et façonne ses récits.

Kim Waldron aime raconter des histoires et aime se raconter. S’il est vrai qu’elle s’intéresse à la dichotomie entre réalité et fiction, il ne faut pas s’y méprendre; la fiction alimente ses propositions, certes, mais l’artiste se transforme aussi et devient fréquemment source des réalités qu’elle incarne physiquement dans ses œuvres.

La fiction est primordiale au moment de préparer ses projets, au moment d’en faire la rédaction; par la suite cet aspect est maintenu par le discours de l’artiste plutôt que par ses actions et ses performances. Si la fiction persiste, c’est habituellement parce que Waldron juxtapose à ses créations, une fois finalisées, les récits qui en ont façonné l’existence par ses cartels, ses titres, ses entretiens et ses écrits. Pour bien comprendre son travail, il est important d’en assimiler la part conceptuelle et la part formelle, et cela passe par un entendement qui dépasse l’image unique et doit incorporer le processus de création et le discours de l’artiste. En plus de répondre à ces attentes, cet ouvrage comprend aussi un essai de Marie-Ève Charron et un texte littéraire de Jacob Wren qui viennent tous deux bonifier et enrichir cette expérience du travail de Waldron.

Kim Waldron. Une autre femme_Another Woman is a retrospective volume that spans fifteen years of Kim Waldron’s artistic practice. The book’s title refers to the artist’s almost constant use of the self-portrait. Here, another woman is herself. In this context, the title necessarily recalls the famous statement “I is another” Arthur Rimbaud made in his May 15, 1871 letter to Paul Demeny. This paradoxical phrase, which questions the boundaries between identity and otherness, is translated and entangled in Waldron’s work with all the challenges that the duality between reality and fiction poses in her images and stories. In her projects, she becomes this other woman, this other women is the outcome of this becoming. To become a politician, the artist actually carried out her electoral campaign and worked full time on it. To become a butcher, the artist spent almost a year studying butchery.

Kim Waldron’s self-portraits are presented in various guises, such as photographs, video, printmaking, literary writing or even as legal entities, as is the case with Kim Waldron Limited. In self-portraiture the use of the represented body also entails an important performative dimension. Waldron’s work has taught me that the body is active even when it is still. Each of these fragments, each of these moments she captures in an image rightly presupposes a past, present and future and thus generates multiple stories that are not only rooted in the represented actions, but also in the artist’s very body. Her body evolves and is transformed along with her approach and thus shapes her stories.

Kim Waldron is fond of storytelling and she likes to tell the story of herself. Though it is true that she is interested in the dichotomy between reality and fiction, this should not be misunderstood; fiction certainly fuels her proposals, but she also transforms herself and often becomes the source of the realities she physically embodies in her works.

Fiction is primordial at the preparation phase of her projects, at the start of the writing process and it is subsequently sustained by the artist’s discourse rather than by her actions and performances. If the fiction persists, it is usually because, once the project is done, Waldron uses her exhibition labels, titles, interviews and texts to juxtapose her creations with the stories that shaped their existence. To properly understand her work, it is important to assimilate its conceptual and formal aspects and this requires a comprehension that goes beyond the image alone and must encompass the artist’s creative process and discourse. In addition to meeting these expectations, this book also comprises an essay by Marie-Ève Charron and a literary text by Jacob Wren, both of which contribute to refining and enriching the experience of Waldron’s work.

1979 Née le 25 juin 1979 à Montréal, Kim Waldron est la deuxième enfant de James Bellord Waldron III et d’Ann Waldron.

Kim Waldron was born on June 25, 1979, the second child of James Bellord Waldron III and Ann Waldron in Montreal.

Sa grand-mère, la danseuse Virginia Bacon, avait sa propre compagnie de danse à New York dans les années 1930. Ayant été élevé par une mère danseuse, son père, un ophtalmologiste, encourage ses aspirations artistiques.

Her grandmother, Virginia Bacon, was a dancer who had her own dance company in New York City in the 1930s. Having been raised by a dancer, her father, an ophthalmologist, encouraged her artistic pursuits.

1999-2003 Kim Waldron étudie la photographie, la gravure et la vidéo au Nova Scotia College of Art & Design, à Halifax, et obtient un baccalauréat en arts médiatiques. Elle a pour conseiller Michael Fernandes.

Kim Waldron studies photography, printmaking and video at Nova Scotia College of Art & Design, in Halifax, and graduates with a BFA in Media Arts.

2001 Kim Waldron participe à un programme d’échange de trois mois qui lui permet d’étudier à l’École nationale supérieure des beaux-arts de Paris auprès de Jean-Marc Bustamante et de Sophie Calle. Elle rencontre l’artiste Lynne Cohen alors qu’elle travaille comme secrétaire à la clinique ophtalmologique de son père. Grâce aux contacts de l’artiste, elle apprend l’existence d’un programme de résidence d’artistes offert par le ministère autrichien de l’Éducation, de la Culture et des Arts. Sa demande est acceptée et elle séjourne trois mois à Vienne, où elle réalise la série photographique Triples.

She meets the artist Lynne Cohen while working as a secretary at her father’s eye clinic. Through Lynne’s contacts she learns about an artist-in-residence program offered by the Austrian Federal Ministry for Education, Arts and Culture. She is accepted to the program and travels to Vienna for a three-month residency where she photographs the series Triples.

2008 The Dad Tapes/The Mom Photographs est présenté en coproduction par Articule (projets spéciaux) et la galerie Werner Whitman, à Montréal, puis à la galerie Eyelevel, à Halifax.

2009-2013 Kim Waldron fait des études à l’Université Concordia, à Montréal, auprès de Raymonde April, Evergon, Chih Chien Wang et son directeur de maîtrise François Morelli. Elle obtient un diplôme d’études supérieures en beaux-arts avec spécialisation en photographie.

2010 Elle présente The Dad Tapes/The Mom Photographs dans le cadre de l’événement Art Souterrain, à Montréal, et participe à l’exposition Le Tarot de Montréal, conçue par Marie-Claude Bouthillier à la maison de la culture du Plateau Mont-Royal.

Son projet Beautiful Creatures est retenu pour l’événement La colonie, mis sur pied par Jean-Michel Ross à Deschambault-Grondines à l’occasion du 25e anniversaire de l’Œil de Poisson. Lors du vernissage, elle offre un banquet public. Une sélection d’œuvres de sa série Working Assumption est également présentée dans l’exposition Au travail, réalisée par Marie-Ève Charron pour le Musée régional de Rimouski.

Son fils Thomas Henry Ross nait le 10 octobre 2010.

Kim Waldron is awarded the Prix Pierre-Ayot and the Claudine and Stephen Bronfman Fellowship in Contemporary Art. Ville de Montréal and Cégep de St-Hyacinthe collect artworks from the project Beautiful Creatures.

She shows the entire Beautiful Creatures project at Oboro and launches The Do-It-Yourself Cookbook during the opening.

2014 Kim Waldron inaugure sa campagne comme candidate indépendante dans la circonscription de Papineau avec l’exposition Public Office, présentée à la Galerie Thomas Henry Ross art contemporain (éphémère), où elle lance également ses mémoires Honesty, Hope and Hard Work. Concurrently, she exhibits artwork spanning 10 years in a show titled Rétrospective 2003 – 2013 at Galerie Thomas Henry Ross art contemporain. The Ville de Montréal supported both exhibitions.

She shows work from Beautiful Creatures in the exhibition Territoires imaginés at Musée d’art contemporain des Laurentides in St-Jérôme, where she is awarded the Réperage Loto-Québec Prize.

Her daughter Margot Eleanor Ross is born on October 17, 2014.

2015 Kim Waldron et sa famille se rendent en Chine en vue d’une résidence d’artistes de trois mois au Chinese European Art Centre, à Xiamen, suivie d’une résidence d’un mois au Red Gate Residency, à Beijing. Au cours de ce séjour, elle réalise la série photographique Made in Québec, qui fait l’objet d’une exposition individuelle au Chinese European Art Centre.

Elle commande trois portraits officiels d’elle-même au peintre Wang Wei pour son projet Public Office et elle tourne la vidéo Superstar dans la Cité interdite.

Elle devient candidate officielle à l’élection fédérale et participe au Débat 2015 des candidats de Papineau, présenté par Optica et VIVA! Art Action, à Montréal.

Elle lance la version française de ses mémoires Travail, espoir et honnêteté.

Kim Waldron and her family travel to China for a three-month residency at the Chinese European Art Centre in Xiamen and a one-month residency at Red Gate Residency in Beijing. She shoots the photographs for the project Made in Québec, that she shows in a solo exhibition at the Chinese European Art Centre.

She has three official portraits made by the painter Wang Wei for her Public Office project and shoots the video Superstar at the Forbidden City.

She becomes an official candidate in the federal election and takes part in the Papineau All-Candidates Debate 2015, presented by Optica and VIVA! Art Action in Montreal. She launches the French version of her memoir Travail, espoir et honnêteté.

Des pièces de la série Working Assumption figurent dans l’exposition Dress Codes, conçue par Alexandrine Dhainaut à Mains d’œuvres, à Paris. Et enfin, Made in Québec est sélectionné par le commissaire Chen Wei pour l’exposition Local Action, dans le cadre du Jimei X Arles International Photography Festival à Xiamen, en Chine.

Au moment d’écrire ces lignes, une campagne électorale vient d’être lancée au Québec pour l’élection d’un nouveau gouvernement.

Les médias traditionnels et numériques sont sur le pied d’alerte et promettent une couverture attentive des politicien.ne.s sur le terrain. Le paysage urbain s’est quant à lui rapidement garni de pancartes électorales mettant de l’avant le portrait des candidat.e.s dans un style qui ne se remarque plus.

Malgré cette activité accaparante, plusieurs se disent indifférent.e.s, voire cyniques, face aux élections et à sa classe politique qui, d’emblée, est soupçonnée d’être hypocrite.

Kim Waldron pourrait être de ces personnes.

Elle admet qu’elle a longtemps pensé que la politique ne pouvait être que mensonge ce qui, entre autres, l’a un jour poussée à faire campagne elle-même en se présentant comme candidate indépendante dans le comté de Papineau aux élections fédérales de 2015.

Si ce n’était du statut d’artiste de Waldron, et de son intention d’en faire une œuvre d’art, ce projet serait probablement passé inaperçu.

Son expérience allait plutôt engendrer Public Office (2014-2016), une œuvre marathon synthétisant plusieurs enjeux de sa pratique qui s’étire sur plus de 15 ans et que cet essai propose d’embrasser. Dans la période préludant sa campagne électorale, l’artiste a présenté à la Galerie Thomas Henry Ross art contemporain une mini-exposition rétrospective qui a donné l’impulsion à cette publication. Une grille dense de photographies présentait des fragments choisis des séries de Kim Waldron, sans le respect des cloisons qui les séparaient habituellement ni la chronologie qui les ordonnait jusqu’alors.

rétrospectif veut considérer le travail de l’artiste sans le confiner à la notion d’autoportrait à laquelle il pourrait être réduit.

Combinant la photographie à la performance, Kim Waldron met en place une imagerie où l’identité du sujet prend forme, trouvant dans les postures empruntées et les rôles joués différents lieux de pouvoir tenus pour naturels. D’une série à l’autre, elle expose les conditions de son agentivité, dans des situations ayant pour terrain le travail, la politique et l’art, et en y développant des représentations non conventionnelles de la femme. Son art est révélateur des inégalités de genre et des rapports de pouvoir asymétriques qui, pour opérer dans le réel, s’élaborent aussi de projections fantasmatiques. Dans cette production qui n’hésite donc pas à confondre les faits et la fiction, les sphères du privé et du public sont éprouvées dans leur distinction de sorte à mettre en relation la vie personnelle et l’engagement citoyen. Les œuvres de Waldron redonnent ainsi raison au crédo féministe voulant que « le privé est politique » et trouvent dans les images et la performance des outils heuristiques capables d’excéder le monde de l’art.

Le roman familial Quand en 2015 Kim Waldron publie ses mémoires, c’est dans le but de se faire connaître par la population du comté où elle projette de faire campagne pour les élections fédérales. La publication précède la sortie de l’autobiographie de Justin Trudeau, annoncée six mois auparavant sur le site Web de la CBC. À 42 ans, fils d’un ancien premier ministre

notoire et chef de son parti, le geste va de soi.

De Waldron, le projet semble plus farfelu, elle qui, âgée alors de 35 ans, n’avait peu ou pas connu les projecteurs. La qualité « ordinaire » de sa vie constitue une résistance face à ce qui devrait fonder la nécessité d’une autobiographie, mais le statut d’artiste octroie à l’acte de se raconter une dimension supplémentaire qui s’inscrit dans une longue tradition, celle des « vies d’artistes ». Depuis la Renaissance, avec des embryons remontant à l’Antiquité, les biographies d’artistes sont émaillées de lieux communs et d’anecdotes qui ancrent la trajectoire personnelle dans le talent inné et la précocité du besoin de créer.

Les autobiographies d’artiste ne semblent pas échapper à ce genre de lieux communs.

Chez Waldron, le récit expose plutôt avec beaucoup de franchise un parcours semé d’embûches et de grandes hésitations où le don naturel n’a pas sa place. Petits métiers essayés, aspirations délaissées et efforts acharnés font plutôt la trame de l’ouvrage intitulé Honesty, Hope and Hard Work.

Un brin moqueur, le titre découle du slogan de la campagne des Libéraux fédéraux : Hope and Hard Work.

Le texte n’est cependant pas exempt d’anecdotes piquantes qui concourent à instaurer une légende autour de l’artiste dont les éléments biographiques exposés nourrissent invariablement l’interprétation de ses œuvres. Savoir que Kim Waldron se reconnaît un peu dans l’image de sa grandmère paternelle qui fut Rockette à New York et qu’elle ait songé à devenir pilote d’avion dans l’armée américaine résonne avec sa production qui exploite la mise en scène de soi dans différents rôles. Plus que les anecdotes elles-mêmes, le genre de l’autobiographie est à souligner ; c’est la forme qu’a choisie Kim Waldron après avoir reçu la Bourse Claudine et Stephen Bronfman en art contemporain, qui exige en retour de l’artiste une exposition avec publication. Waldron fait un usage significatif de la bourse en délaissant les modes traditionnels en art pour une autobiographie qui jouera un rôle dans sa campagne électorale.

Sans le savoir au départ, Waldron venait déjà de croiser la trajectoire de son plus célèbre adversaire de comté dont le principal argentier du parti est Stephen Bronfman.

Le récit personnel de l’artiste appelle aussi ce que Philippe Lejeune a nommé le « pacte autobiographique ». Selon cette

théorie, l’auteur.e se raconte avec franchise, sans écarter les faits moins reluisants de sa vie.

En retour, le lectorat, qui présume de son authenticité, doit faire preuve d’indulgence.

C’est sur cette base construite, mais dite vraie, que s’établissent les conditions pour adhérer au récit. Venant de Kim Waldron, le genre autobiographique ne surprend guère quoiqu’il rende la réception de son œuvre équivoque. D’une série à l’autre, ne tente-t-elle pas d’embrouiller la frontière entre le réel et la fiction, de compliquer les éléments de preuves ? Pourquoi ce témoignage écrit n’userait-il pas des mêmes stratégies ? N’y a-t-il pas, d’ailleurs, matière à le penser ?

La volonté d’ancrer le travail dans le matériel biographique remonte aux premières œuvres de l’artiste dont le projet The Dad Tapes/ The Mom Photographs (2007) est d’ailleurs emblématique.

L’œuvre en deux parties regroupe les images de famille prises par ses parents au même moment ; le regard de l’un et de l’autre est supporté par deux technologies différentes, mais attentives aux mêmes scènes.

La vidéo Chronology compile trente ans de souvenirs, des images fixes et en mouvement qui élaborent sous nos yeux une chronique familiale conventionnelle dont les membres sont occupés à prendre la pose, concourant à la fabrication d’images qui auront la fonction de garder en mémoire des souvenirs heureux.

Dans Sunsets, un assemblage de photographies encadrées et une vidéo font quant à eux du coucher de soleil leur seul sujet. La récurrence obstinée du geste dit la fascination des parents pour un spectacle dont les résultats captés ne sont que décevants, en raison du contre-jour, mais se veut à la fois l’expression du désir tenace d’encapsuler la source de leur émerveillement partagé pour la même chose.

Cette « mémoire prothétique », comme le dirait Celia Lury, confirme la stabilité de la cellule familiale et l’unité du couple dans une structure qui emprunte autant à la narration qu’à l’image. Ce dispositif, basé sur la sélection et le processus, dévoile les ressorts de l’identité narrative qui se joue dans la vie personnelle, mais que les médias sociaux actuels ont propulsés dans la sphère publique. Les archives de Kim Waldron sont à cet égard les témoins d’une époque révolue où les frontières de la vie privée se faisaient plus étanches. L’artiste a d’ailleurs exploité un caractère vieillot, tiré de son enfance, pour mettre en scène ces

œuvres à Montréal, en 2008 et en 2010.

Un décor où des accessoires domestiques encadraient les projets, au sein d’un réel appartement (Gallery Werner Whitman avec le centre Articule) ou dans le corridor d’un centre commercial (Art souterrain, Montréal), ce qui accentuait la redéfinition des rapports entre les sphères privées et publiques.

Kim Waldron explore de manière récurrente la dynamique entre ces sphères.

La série Triples (2009) en propose une variante, en insistant cette fois sur l’idée du couple. L’enfant des albums de famille devenue adulte se met en scène dans l’intimité domestique de couples, tous sollicités lors d’une résidence d’artiste à Vienne. Avec leur participation dans l’élaboration des scènes, Waldron s’immisce dans leurs activités quotidiennes (ménage, cuisine, repas, détente…) ; elle se pose en figure tierce qui perturbe symboliquement l’unité du couple, telle la présence inconsciente de l’altérité qui agit sur la plénitude de leur union. Réalisée au pays de Freud, la série se veut un écho à son ouvrage Malaise dans la civilisation (1929) qui établit face aux pulsions le rôle de la culture dans la régulation des tabous et des interdits sexuels et moraux. Dans ses dimensions les plus autobiographiques, l’œuvre de Waldron fait d’ailleurs résonner la mécanique freudienne du « roman familial », processus fantasmatique et narratif par lequel l’enfant s’invente, en modulant les ingrédients tirés de sa famille réelle pour en établir une fictive.

Aussi se présente-t-elle ensuite dans ses images en future mère. Au terme de Beautiful Creatures (2010-2013), projet qui aura mené Waldron à faire la boucherie d’animaux qu’elle aura elle-même tués, elle invite le public à partager un festin champêtre dans le cadre enchanteur de Deschambault-Grondines où, affairée à la cuisine et au service, elle apparaît enceinte de son premier enfant, arborant le tablier de sa grand-mère. Le passage de la cuisine domestique au repas en public n’est pas anodin et peut se traduire comme l’affirmation d’une réussite sociale qui dépasse la vie privée. Entre Terre-Neuve et Deschambault-Grondines, deux repas privés et quatre buffets publics seront d’ailleurs offerts par l’artiste, cuisinant dans tous les cas sa viande.

Corpus Le processus entier de Beautiful Creatures pourrait répondre à un besoin d’éprouver les limites de la sphère individuelle pour évoquer un accomplissement social. C’est pour démystifier l’envers de l’assiette et remettre dans son contexte initial l’animal consommé sous forme de viande, que Kim Waldron pose les règles de ce projet né dans le cadre d’une résidence à Terre-Neuve, au English Harbour Arts Centre. Elle documente en photographie les étapes de la transformation qui vont de l’abattage à la cuisine en passant par la boucherie, toutes réalisées par ellemême. L’imagerie proposée se tient loin du modèle industriel qui procure habituellement la viande aux épiceries pour la consommation courante et qui en segmente les opérations dans une chaîne déshumanisante. C’est plutôt avec la complicité de petits éleveurs que l’artiste exécute son plan et dans des conditions d’abattage artisanales qui inscrit sur le champ le travail dans une logique d’autosuffisance.

La crudité des images, des gestes assénés aux animaux à la découpe des carcasses, laisse pressentir la charge physique de l’action et le corps réel de l’artiste captés par le déclic d’une photographie néanmoins encore soucieuse de la mise en scène.

La question personnelle de l’artiste sur la provenance de ce que l’on mange se répercute donc dans une mise en vue partagée, tant dans la documentation photographique que dans les festins offerts lors d’événements ouverts aux publics. Le livre d’artiste The Do-It-Yourself Cookbook poursuit également cet objectif de mise en commun, où la culture du faire soi-même redonne à l’individu un pouvoir sur sa vie par le truchement de l’expérimentation et par l’appropriation de gestes autrement pris en charge par des entreprises de plus ou moins grandes tailles.

Parmi la documentation constituée pour ce projet, une rare image nous ramène dans l’univers domestique de l’artiste. Il s’agit d’un des repas partagés, mais cette fois avec quelques ami.e.s, comme le précise la légende du livre de cuisine. Au-dessus de la table où le repas est bien amorcé, trônent les têtes naturalisées des animaux abattus : veau, porc, agneau, poulet, canard et lièvre tendent leur regard de verre tandis que les convives les ignorent. Traiter les animaux

sauvages en trophées de chasse concorde avec une pratique usuelle, mais néanmoins contestée. En réservant le même traitement aux animaux de ferme, Waldron percute autrement et souligne la pratique atypique dont elle se réclame. En empruntant le même processus pour tous les animaux et en les restituant ensemble sous la forme empaillée, elle gomme les distinctions de catégorie entre l’animal sauvage et domestique, la chasse et l’abattage et, surtout, entre l’activité récréative et la production de biens de nécessité.

Les opérations d’abattage et de boucherie qui ont été scrutées – la transparence de la photographie établissant un parallèle troublant avec le dépeçage des carcasses – fournissent des images de l’artiste en action, de l’artiste au travail. Dans Beautiful Creatures, l’artiste va là où elle sera intégralement mise en contact avec la production de ce qui se trouve dans l’assiette, de ce qui est essentiel à sa vie, à la vie de sa famille, de ses amis et de convives.

Elle donne littéralement un visage à la vie sacrifiée, celle des animaux, et se fait le sujet-auteure de cette action dont les tenants sont habituellement dissimulés. L’artiste n’emprunte pas pour autant une approche morale ou moralisante, mais semble s’intéresser davantage à la portée identificatoire liée au processus. Pour Waldron, manger ne relève pas uniquement de la nécessité, comme en témoigne le livre de cuisine qui expose davantage un style de vie et un certain type de gastronomie. Ce livre de cuisine, comme la biographie plus tard, fait d’ailleurs écho à l’engouement pour ce genre d’ouvrage qui seraient, suivant Giorgio Agamben, des « dispositifs » pour se dire, qui orientent les conduites et qui façonnent qui nous sommes.

Manger, c’est aussi pour le plaisir, pas seulement pour vivre. C’est dans cette perspective également que l’artiste représente le rapport au travail, dans une imagerie qui, si elle doit à la nécessité, se veut aussi en grande partie liée à une quête de soi, dans le processus d’une identité à forger.

C’est pourquoi Beautiful Creatures capte l’exécution au complet du travail et pas seulement le résultat final ; le sujet, Kim Waldron, est en apprentissage, sous le regard attentif de l’« instructeur ». Les vêtements de travail trop grands sont révélateurs de sa posture, qui s’inscrit dans la poursuite de la série précédente, Working Assumption (2003), la toute première de l’artiste. Dans le

contexte d’une résidence à Paris, au cours de laquelle elle fait une rencontre décisive avec Sophie Calle, elle a approché des étrangers masculins afin de prendre leur place au travail, dans leur habit le temps d’un déclic.

L’emprunt temporaire est suggéré par le format feint des 17 photographies en polaroid qui souligne, par le fait même, le caractère performatif de l’identité. Celle-ci s’élabore dans les aspirations soulevées par le travail, en situant l’individu dans des catégories sociales et économiques, mais aussi de genres. La jeune image de Waldron trahit sa préoccupation pour l’avenir dans des rôles qu’elle épouse volontairement avec maladresse comme si ces postures pouvaient lui être refusées ou encore comme si elle pouvait toutes les endosser, sans en élire une particulièrement. Vouloir représenter ce monde du travail avec son corps soulève en effet aussi la question de son devenir-artiste dont l’identité se construit dans l’image. Le mode sériel de plusieurs de ses œuvres soutient cette conception d’un sujet décentré qui se définit constamment dans des opérations d’emprunts, de jeux de rôle et de processus ouvert à l’altérité. À cet univers relativement familier des travailleurs parisiens fait suite le dépaysement de la Chine en 2015. C’est dans le contexte de deux résidences, à Beijing (Red Gate Residency) et à Xiamen (Chinese European Art Center), que l’artiste réalise Made in Québec, une série composée de 29 photographies où elle introduit sa personne vêtue d’un uniforme de style Mao gris dans différents milieux de travail. Elle est partie avec l’idée de donner de son temps là-bas, en retour des nombreux produits procurés à l’Occident par la maind’œuvre bon marché chinoise. La série dévoile les accès accordés à une artiste étrangère qui a su obtenir des faveurs auprès de ses contacts.

Certains domaines lui étaient d’office proscrits, ou plus difficiles d’accès, pour être occupés par des hommes seulement. L’invariance de son uniforme met en relief encore une fois le processus ; il lui octroie la capacité de jouer au caméléon, en se fondant dans les contextes, mais il souligne à la fois sa blanchitude occidentale qui tranche avec les autres personnes. Les mises en scène montrent une Chine ouverte avec ses institutions d’enseignement et ses nombreux ateliers et manufactures (atelier de métal, de moulage et fonderie de bronze par exemple), des lieux fréquentés par les artistes occidentaux.

Ces ateliers offrent en effet leurs services en anglais à des clients internationaux qui peuvent les retrouver sur le Web (Xiamen Kangsi Art Limited, XiaMen DingYi Sculpture Co. Ltd). La gamme des services offerts par ces fournisseurs est large et répond à des besoins variés qui vont de la commande décorative à la production pour des œuvres d’art public contemporain, ce dont témoigne leur catalogue en ligne. En somme, la fabrication de l’art connaît une délocalisation similaire aux autres productions de biens.

Par le hiatus visuel provoqué par son corps dans l’image, Kim Waldron éclaire le monde du travail chinois et expose par le fait même un aspect de la mondialisation. En tant que deuxième puissance économique mondiale, et donc principale rivale des États-Unis, la Chine a tout à fait à voir dans nos vies, semble dire l’artiste. Avant d’être des citoyen.ne.s, les personnes travaillent et consomment.

Ce seraient là, suggèrent les œuvres, les principales voies de subjectivation, dans un sens foucaldien, disponibles dans le régime néolibéral qui prévaut actuellement. De plus en plus, les œuvres de Kim Waldron interrogent d’ailleurs les rouages de la démocratie et ses rapports inextricables avec le système économique dominant.

Démocratie Inc. Avant même de plonger en politique fédérale, le temps d’une campagne électorale, la citoyenne Kim Waldron a pris la parole dans l’espace public lors de la grève étudiante de 2012. Elle a fait publier dans le quotidien Montreal Gazette une lettre adressée au Premier ministre du Québec Jean Charest, dont le gouvernement avait décrété une hausse drastique des frais de scolarité. L’étudiante en colère a rédigé cette lettre que l’artiste a transformée en œuvre. Dans Même jour_Same Day (2012), elle a exposé la version originale de sa lettre traduite vers le français dans le contexte simulé du Devoir et, à côté, la reproduction de sa publication dans le quotidien montréalais anglophone pour qui, précise l’artiste sur son site Web, elle a dû accepter que sa « pensée soit gazettifiée ».

En plus de partager ses doléances personnelles, critiquant, entre autres, le refus de négocier et les mensonges du gouvernement, l’artiste a réuni les unes de six quotidiens pour les

journées du 17 et 23 mai, respectivement marquée par l’adoption de la loi spéciale 22 (ou projet de loi 78), limitant le droit de manifester, et la marche de protestation historique qui s’en est suivie. Dans cette installation, l’artiste pointait le cul-de-sac vicieux entraîné par le gouvernement qui, reprochait-elle, attisait les tensions en se servant des médias, des tribunes aux orientations idéologiques bien marquées.

Après cette incursion dans un média pour se porter à la défense d’une cause politique, le projet Public Office (2014-2016) apparaît finalement comme une suite naturelle dans le parcours de Kim Waldron. En ne respectant pas le calendrier électoral, c’est-à-dire en amorçant sa campagne un an à l’avance, l’artiste a fait d’emblée de cette démarche une œuvre d’art qui allait d’ailleurs devoir combiner ses contraintes personnelles, en conciliant carrière artistique, maternité et engagement politique. En effet, c’est enceinte de huit mois que Waldron se lance en politique, processus qu’elle interrompt pour ses résidences en Chine qu’elle a réussi à orchestrer grâce à un congé de maternité et en faisant suivre le reste de sa famille avec elle. C’est là-bas qu’elle fera faire les copies en peinture, par le peintre commercial Wang Wei, son portrait de politicienne mis au point en photo pour ses pancartes électorales. Elle y montre sa silhouette de grossesse avancée, une image atypique de la femme en politique. Très rapidement, son processus montre le rôle important joué par l’image en politique, dimension plus cruelle encore pour les femmes, toujours moins nombreuses que les hommes dans ce domaine et trop souvent identifiées ou réduites à leur image. Alors que sa pancarte arborait son statut de candidate « Indépendante », elle fut surprise de voir que son inscription officielle, encadrée par la loi fédérale, ne prévoyait pas d’en féminiser le terme ; c’était pour elle la preuve d’un système discriminatoire envers les femmes.

Kim Waldron a fait pleinement usage de son corps de femme enceinte, puis de sa fille née, les instruments de la mise en marché de son image de politicienne. Elle a fait le jeu du spectacle auquel s’adonnent les politiciens dans un système démocratique dont les rouages reposent sur les médias traditionnels et les réseaux sociaux. Pendant la campagne officielle à l’automne 2015, elle participe ainsi à des entrevues télévisées. Elle ramène aussi

de Chine la vidéo Superstar qui met en vedette sa fille alors que sa famille est en visite à la Cité interdite, symbole d’un pouvoir d’un autre temps. Le point de vue subjectif est celui du bébé dans sa poussette ; il montre en plan-séquence la meute de touristes asiatiques en train de la filmer avec leur téléphone intelligent, jouant du coude pour obtenir l’image de cette enfant blanche aux cheveux blonds. De la Chine, l’artiste rapporte également ses portraits peints qu’elle présente pendant sa campagne lors de l’exposition La très honorable Kim Waldron.

L’intitulé donne à cette production de commande le caractère officiel des portraits de cour ou de propagande, semblable à ceux retrouvés au pays du parti unique qu’est la Chine, ou à ceux prisés par Stephen Harper quand il était au pouvoir et qu’il encourageait les vieux symboles de la monarchie.

Aux élections de 2015, le règne de Harper touchait toutefois à sa fin et la victoire de Justin Trudeau dans le comté de Papineau semblait, elle, gagnée d’avance. Pour Kim Waldron, le cynisme envers la politique vient entre autres de la puissance des grands partis sur qui le chef exerce un ascendant incontestable ; il en est l’image et dicte la discipline à ses député.e.s. En tant qu’« Indépendante », Kim Waldron se présente au contraire comme une figure autonome qui croit pouvoir apporter avec sa voix une diversité que l’hégémonie des partis établis ne rend pas audible. C’est pourtant avec ce statut de « candidate indépendante », mis de l’avant dans ses pancartes électorales, qu’elle a rendu possible dans son œuvre des portraits de groupe inédits. Un premier portrait a pris forme lors du débat électoral organisé par le centre Optica et par VIVA! Art Action qui lui a permis de partager une tribune avec d’autres candidat.e.s de son comté, rencontre captée par la caméra. Le facsimilé du bulletin de vote officiel, où les noms de tous les candidat.e.s figuraient assemblés, en constitue une autre incarnation visuelle. L’exposition Public Office rendait compte dans l’espace de ces insertions réelles de Kim Waldron, aspirante politicienne, dans un groupe qu’elle ne pensait pas rejoindre au départ et dont elle s’est également efforcée de présenter les points de ressemblances, comme de disparités. Sur des affiches en carton coloré placées dans la vitrine de la galerie FOFA, elle a compilé les données budgétaires relatives à la campagne de

chacun.e des candidat.e.s, incluant leur résultat aux élections. Les chiffres alignés invitent à la comparaison et précisent des luttes de forces inégales. Avec leurs données transcrites à la main, les aplats rouges, bleus, verts, oranges et blancs formaient une mosaïque visible dans l’espace public, un clin d’œil à l’affichage sauvage du collectif new-yorkais Group Material (Dazibaos, 1982) dont l’artiste admire l’engagement politique.

Avec Public Office, la figure corporelle de Kim Waldron finit par s’effacer. Elle y a substitué son nom sur une liste électorale, puis finalement les données de sa campagne.

Le corps de l’artiste devient information.

C’est ainsi qu’elle expose les fondements de notre démocratie dont le système travaille à la perpétuation de lui-même, sans même que la classe politique se mette réellement à l’écoute des besoins de la population et des iniquités croissantes. Dans l’année qui a suivi Public Office, survient dans les journaux l’affaire des Panama Papers laquelle, grâce à une fuite d’informations historique, met en cause 140 personnalités pour leurs implications dans des sociétés extraterritoriales. L’artiste raconte avoir pris connaissance à cette époque d’un schéma à bulles publié dans The Independant montrant que l’occupation des personnes impliquées en plus forte concentration était celle du monde politique.

Ce lien faisait étrangement écho à sa propre démarche déjà amorcée et pour laquelle elle avait décidé d’ouvrir une compagnie extraterritoriale, et ce, avec le financement d’une subvention dûment reçue du Conseil des arts du Canada. Cet usage particulier de sa subvention par l’artiste éclaire indirectement le laxisme entourant les paradis fiscaux par le gouvernement canadien, ce dont le philosophe Alain Deneault se fait l’infatigable dénonciateur. Dans son ouvrage Une escroquerie légalisée (Écosociété, 2016), il fait entre autres la brillante démonstration que les politiques d’austérité se font sur le dos des plus démunis tandis que les plus fortunés et les grandes entreprises ont recours en toute légalité aux paradis fiscaux. Le manque à gagner pour maintenir les services publics en les finançant adéquatement échappe ainsi au gouvernement qui se fait le complice retors de telles manœuvres.

En ouvrant sa compagnie Kim Waldron Limited à Hong Kong, l’artiste met le doigt sur cet écheveau et se lance dans une autre

aventure qui lui permettra, espère-t-elle, de comprendre de l’intérieur les rouages complexes d’un fonctionnement a priori très hermétique et réservé à des initiés de classes supérieures, ce qui laisse présager des obstacles plus importants. Comme dans ses projets antérieurs, elle consigne les traces de son processus, incluant le certificat d’authentification qui permet de prouver la création de ladite compagnie. Le corps de l’artiste s’est réincarné dans une nouvelle entité légale et administrative qui sera à l’origine d’œuvres d’art, des produits dérivés que l’entreprise mettra en marché. Déjà habituée d’être entrepreneure d’elle-même, Kim Waldron donne ici une nouvelle orientation à son art, qui pourrait bien exemplifier ce que la professeure en sciences politiques Wendy Brown observe dans les sociétés démocratiques à l’ère du néolibéralisme. La forme entrepreneuriale proposée au sujet, ce que Michel Foucault appelait l’entrepreneurialisation de soi, glisserait selon elle maintenant davantage « vers une autre forme profondément infléchie par la financiarisation », faisant des agences de notations, des classements, du capital financier et des institutions qui s’en occupent les entités gouvernant désormais nos vies.

Ce tournant dans la pratique de l’artiste promet des développements féconds, un élan qui entraîne l’autoreprésentation ailleurs en proposant de nouvelles formes de subjectivation qui ne passent plus par l’image de son corps réel. Aucune image ne saurait mieux rendre compte de cette transition que celle captée par la caméra de Kim Waldron à Hong Kong, depuis la tour qui abrite sa compagnie.

Les édifices de verre environnant disent combien la transparence du matériau n’est rien à côté de l’opacité des secrets financiers de ce monde. Elle trahit aussi subtilement la présence de l’artiste, dans le reflet fugace d’un mouvement qui nous ramène à elle et à sa capacité de se réinventer.

At the time of writing these lines, an election campaign has been launched in Québec to choose a new government. The traditional and digital media are on high alert and are promising close coverage of the politicians on the ground. For its part, the cityscape has been rapidly decked out with election posters featuring the portrait of their candidates in a style that no longer stands out. Despite this demanding activity, many claim that they feel indifferent, or even cynical about the political class, which they immediately presume to be hypocritical. Kim Waldron could be counted among these people. She admits that she has for a long time thought of politics as consisting of nothing but lies and this is what, among other things, one day drove her to run her own campaign and present herself as an independent candidate in the Papineau riding for the 2015 federal election.

Were it not for Waldron’s artist status, as well as her intention to make a work of art with it, this project would probably not have attracted much attention. Instead her experience engendered Public Office (2014–2016), a marathon work synthesizing several issues addressed in her practice that spans over more than 15 years and which this essay proposes to encompass. In the period that led up to her electoral campaign, the artist presented a mini survey exhibition at Galerie Thomas Henry Ross art contemporain that provided the impetus for this publication.

A dense grid of photographs displaying selected fragments from Kim Waldron’s series, which disregarded both the frames that previously separated the images and the chronology that organized them up to then. Embracing the same approach, my

retrospective gaze seeks to focus on the artist’s work without confining it to the notion of self-portraiture to which it could be reduced.

In combining photography with performance Kim Waldron sets up an imagery in which the identity of the subject takes shape and, through the stances it adopt and roles it plays, encounters various sites of power presumed to be natural. From one series to the next, she exposes the conditions of her agency in situations that unfold in the fields of work, politics and art, and by developing unconventional representations of women within them. Her art reveals the gender inequalities and asymmetrical power relations that, in order to be effective in the real, are also developed as fantasy projections. In this production, which does not hesitate to merge fact and fiction, the distinction between private and public is put to the test by establishing a relation between personal life and citizen engagement. Waldron’s works thereby once again validate the feminist credo that the “personal is political” and make use of images and performance as heuristic tools that make it possible to go beyond the art world.

The Family Romance In 2015 Kim Waldron published her memoir with the goal of making herself better known among people of the riding she had chosen to campaign in for the federal election.

The publication preceded the release of Justin Trudeau’s autobiography, which was announced six months before on the CBC website. For a 42 year-old, son of a renowned prime minister and head of his party, this

seemed an obvious move. For Waldron, the project seemed more bizarre, only 35 years old at the time, she had rarely or never been in the limelight. The “everyday” quality of her life goes contrary to what should usually be the grounds for an autobiography, but the artist status endows the act of telling one’s story with an additional dimension that is part of a long tradition, as exemplified by the “lives of the artists” genre. Since the Renaissance, and with nascent versions going all the way back to Antiquity, artist biographies are replete with commonplaces and anecdotes that root personal development path in innate talent and a precocious drive to create. Artist autobiographies do not appear to be an exception to such commonplaces. However, with Waldron, the narrative quite openly reveals a path filled with obstacles and great hesitations in which natural talent does not play a role. A toying with various small trades, abandoned ambitions and dogged efforts make up the storyline of the book called Honesty, Hope and Hard Work. A tad tongue in cheek, the title alludes to the federal Liberal’s slogan: Hope and Hard Work.

Yet, the text has its share of spicy anecdotes that contribute to establishing a legend around the artist, whose disclosed biographical elements invariably feed the interpretation of her works. Knowing that Kim Waldron sees a little bit of herself in her paternal grandmother, who was a Rockette in New York, and that she had entertained the idea of becoming a fighter pilot in the American army resonates with a production that draws on self-display in various roles. More than the anecdotes themselves, it is the autobiographic genre that is worth highlighting; a form that Kim Waldron chose after receiving the Claudine and Stephen Bronfman Fellowship in Contemporary Art, which in return required the artist to produce an exhibition along with a publication. Waldron put the fellowship to good use by leaving traditional art modes behind and opting for an autobiography that was to play a role in her electoral campaign.

Without knowing it at the outset, Waldron had already crossed paths with her riding’s most famous adversary whose main party financier is Stephen Bronfman.

The artist’s personal story also evokes what Philippe Lejeune calls the “autobiographic pact.” According to this theory the author

recounts his or her story frankly and without omitting the less impressive moments of his or life. In return, the readership, who presupposes the author’s authenticity, must show some leniency. It is on this constructed, yet presumed to be true basis that the conditions for believing in the story are established. Coming from Kim Waldron, the autobiographic genre is hardly surprising, though its does make the reception of her work ambiguous. Does she not try to blur the boundary between fact and fiction and to obscure the evidence? Why wouldn’t this written testimony make use of the same strategies? Moreover, aren’t there many reasons to believe so? The desire to root the work in biographical material goes back to the artist’s first works among which The Dad Tapes/The Mom Photographs (2007) project is emblematic.

The two-part work gathers family photographs taken at the same time by her parents; the gaze of the other is supported by two different technologies, but fixed on the same scenes. The video Chronology compiles thirty years of memories, consisting of still and moving images that unfold as a conventional family chronicle with members striking poses and contributing to creating images the purpose of which is to keep happy memories alive. In Sunsets, an assemblage of framed photographs and a video focus on the subject of twilight. The stubborn recurrence of the gesture speaks of the parents’ fascination with the spectacle of which the recorded results are quite disappointing, due to the backlighting, while they do seek to be the expression of a resolute desire to encapsulate the source of their shared wonder for the same thing. This “prosthetic memory,” as Celia Lury terms it, confirms the stability of the family unit and the union of the couple in a structure that draws on storytelling and the image. This apparatus, based on the selection and the process, reveals the mechanisms of the narrative identity that plays itself out in personal life, but which today’s social media have pushed into the public sphere. In this regard, Kim Waldron’s archives testify to a bygone era in which the boundaries between private and public life were more sealed off. Moreover, the artist made use of an old fashioned look, inspired by her childhood, to display her works in

Montreal from 2008 to 2010. A decor in which home accessories framed her projects in the context of an actual apartment (Gallery Werner Whitman with the centre Articule) or a shopping mall corridor (Art souterrain, Montreal), which highlighted the redefinition of the relationships between private and public spheres.

In a recurrent manner Kim Waldron explores the dynamics between these spheres.

The series Triples (2009) varied this approach by this time insisting on the idea of the couple.

The child from the family photo albums grows into an adult and displays herself in the domestic intimacy of couples, all of whom responded to a call she put out as part of an artist residency in Vienna. With the respective couples’ collaboration in the development of the scenes, Waldron insinuated herself into their daily activities (cleaning up, cooking, meals, relaxation…); she posed as a third figure who symbolically disturbs the unity of the couple, like an unconscious presence of otherness that affects the plenitude of their union. Created in the country of Freud, the series sought to be an echo of his book Civilization and Its Discontents (1929) which set the role of culture as a means to curb instinctive drives by regulating taboos and sexual and moral prohibitions. In its most autobiographic dimensions, Waldron’s work reactivates the Freudian mechanism of the “family romance,” a fantasy and narrative process in which a child invents him or herself by modulating ingredients taken from a real family to construct a fictional one.

She was subsequently to present herself in her images of a mother to be. At the end of Beautiful Creatures (2010–2013), a project that led Waldron to prepare the meat of animals she had herself slaughtered, she invited the public to share a country feast in the idyllic setting of Deschambault-Grondines, where, busily working in the kitchen and serving guests while wearing her grandmother’s apron, she reveals that she is pregnant with her first child. The passage from the home kitchen to the public meal is not trivial and can be translated as the affirmation of a social success that goes beyond private life.

Moreover, between Newfoundland and Deschambault-Grondines, two private meals and four public buffets were offered by the artist, who in all cases cooked her meat.

Life’s Work The entire process of Beautiful Creatures could be seen as a response to a need to test the limits of the individual sphere so as to evoke a social accomplishment. It is to demystify the activity that brings food to our plates and to put the consumed animal back in its initial context as meat, that Kim Waldron laid out the rules for this project that emerged during a residency at the English Harbour Arts Centre, in Newfoundland. She photographically documented the transformation stages from the slaughtering, preparation of the meat cuts and cooking in the kitchen, all of which she carried out herself. The proposed imagery remains far removed from the industrial model that usually supplies food stores for everyday consumption and which divides the operations into a dehumanizing chain. It is instead with the complicity of small breeders that the artist carried out her plan, and this is in artisanal slaughter conditions that are guided by a work ethic of self-sufficiency. The roughness of the images, depicting the blows dealt to the animals and the cutting up of the carcasses, gives a sense of the physical exertion and the artist’s actual body as captured by a rapidly clicked photograph in which the visual composition is nevertheless paid heed to.

The artist’s personal question regarding the provenance of what we eat is thus reflected in a shared visual display, both in the photographic documentation and the meals offered during public events. The Do-It-Yourself Cookbook artist book also pursues this goal of a collective sharing in which DIY culture enables the individual to reclaim power over his or her life by way of experimentation and the appropriation of actions that are generally carried out by corporations of various sizes.

Among the documentation put together for this project, a rare image offers a glimpse back into the artist’s home environment. The photograph in question depicts one of these shared meals, but this time with a few friends, as the caption in the cookbook indicates.

Above the table where the meal is well under way, the naturalized heads of the slaughtered animals perch over the scene: calf, pig, lamb, chicken, duck and hare cast their glassy gaze while the guests remain oblivious to them.

To treat wild animals as hunting trophies is a common practice, though it is nevertheless

protested. In reserving the same treatment for farm animals, Waldron strikes a different note and foregrounds the atypical practice she claims for herself. In using the same process for all animals and restoring them in a stuffed trophy form, she erases the categorical distinctions between wild and domesticated animals, hunting and slaughtering and above all, between a recreational activity and the production of basic goods.

The slaughtering and meat processing operations that were scrutinized—the transparency of the photographs introduces a troubling parallel with the cutting up of the carcasses—provide images of the artist in action and the artist at work. In Beautiful Creatures, the artist goes to the place where she will be fully put into contact with the production of what ends up on her plate, on what is essential to her life, to the life of her family and her guests. She literally puts a face on the sacrificed lives, those of the animals, and she turns herself into the subject-author of this action whose agents are usually hidden. The artist does not however apply a moral or moralizing approach, but seems more interested in the identity dimension linked to the process.

For Waldron, eating is not solely a necessity, as is made evident by her cookbook in which lifestyle and a certain type of gastronomy are the main focus. This cookbook, like the biography that followed, also echoes the craze for this genre of publication that is, in following Giorgio Agamben, an “apparatus” to speak (of ) oneself, and which guides the behaviours that shape who we are. One also eats for pleasure, not just to live. It is also in this perspective that the artist represents the relationship to work, using an imagery that, though it may involve necessity, is also to a large extent linked to a quest for self-discovery via an identity forging process.

This is why Beautiful Creatures captures the full execution of the work and not only the final result; the subject, Kim Waldron, is in an apprenticeship, under the watchful eye of the “instructor.” The oversized work clothes reveal her stance, which is a continuation of the preceding series, Working Assumption (2003), the artist’s very first work. During a residency in Paris, over the course of which she had a decisive encounter with Sophie Calle, she approached male strangers in order to take their place at work, wearing their clothes long enough to take a snapshot. The temporary

borrowing is suggested by the mimicked polaroid format of the 17 photographs, which by the same token underscore the performative character of identity. The ambitions associated with work establish identity by situating the individual in social and economic categories, as well as those determined by gender.

The young Waldron reveals her concern for the future in these roles she deliberately takes on in an awkward way, as though one might refuse her these positions or rather that she could take all of them on without making a particular choice. Seeking to represent the world of work with one’s body also raises the question of her becoming-artist, for whom identity is constructed in the image. The serial mode of many of her works supports this understanding of a decentred subject who is constantly defined by borrowed actions, role-play and processes that are open to otherness.

In 2015, this relatively familiar world of Parisian workers was followed by the exoticism of China. It is in the context of two residencies, in Beijing (Red Gate Residency) and Xiamen (Chinese European Art Center), that the artist created Made in Québec, a series comprising 29 photographs in which she inserted herself wearing a Mao style uniform in various work environments. She started off with the idea of giving of her time over there, in return for the many products supplied to the West via the cheap labour of the Chinese market. The series reveals the access that is granted to a foreign artist who was able to obtain favours from her contacts. Some fields were automatically off limits, or harder to access, since they are filled by men only.

The invariance of her uniform once again foregrounds the process; it granted her the ability to play the chameleon by merging with her contexts, but it also underlined her status as a white Westerner, which distinguished her from the other persons. The staged displays show an open China with educational institutions and many manufacturing workshops (metal, moulding workshops and bronze foundry, for instance) which are patronized by western artists. These workshops in fact offer their services in English to international clients who find them on the internet (Xiamen Kangsi Art Limited, XiaMen DingYi Sculpture Co. Ltd). The gamut of services offered responds to various needs ranging from decorative commissions to the

production of contemporary public art works, as their online catalogue reveals. In short, art production is undergoing a delocalization that is similar to the production of other goods.

Through the visual hiatus in the image, Kim Waldron sheds a light on the world of Chinese labour and by the same token reveals an aspect of globalization. As the second economic power in the world, and hence the main rival of the US, China is very much a factor in our lives, the artist appears to be saying. Before being citizens, people work and consume. These are, the works suggest, the main avenues of subjectivation, in a Foucauldian sense, offered by the currently prevalent neoliberal regime. Furthermore, Kim Waldron’s works are increasingly probing the mechanisms of democracy and its inextricable links with the dominant economic system.

Democracy Inc. Even before venturing into federal politics for the duration of an electoral campaign, citizen Kim Waldron made her voice heard in public space during the 2012 Quebec student strike.

She had a letter published in the Montreal Gazette newspaper that was addressed to the then-Quebec Premier Jean Charest, whose government had ordered a drastic raise in tuition rates. The angry student wrote this letter and the artist transformed it into a work.

In Même jour_Same Day (2012), she exhibited the original version of her letter translated into French in the simulated context of the Devoir newspaper and alongside it, the reproduction of her publication in the English newspaper, which involved, as the artist explains on her website, accepting that her opinion “be gazettified.” In addition to sharing her personal grievances, criticizing, among other things, the refusal to negotiate and the government’s lies, the artist gathered the front page of six newspapers for the 17th and 23rd of May, 2012, respectively marked by the adoption of the special law: Bill 12 (or Bill 78) limiting the right to protest, and the historic protest march that followed in its wake. In this installation, the artist pointed to the vicious impasse brought about by the government, who she reproached for stirring the tensions by using the media, platforms with clear ideological leanings.

After this foray into a media space to stand up for a political cause, the project Public Office (2014–2016) finally appears as a natural follow-up on Kim Waldron’s career path.

In failing to respect the election timetable, i.e. in beginning the campaign one year in advance, the artist immediately turned this approach into an artwork, while also having to combine personal constraints such as reconciling an artistic career, maternity and political engagement. In fact, Waldron was eight months pregnant when she entered politics, a process that she interrupted to carry out her residencies in China, which she was able to orchestrate thanks to a maternity leave and by bringing her whole family with her.

It is over there that she commissioned the commercial painter Wang Wei to make painted copies of her political candidate portrait, which was then adapted in photograph form for her election posters. The portrait depicts the silhouette of her advanced pregnancy, an untypical image for a woman in politics.

Her process rapidly reveals the major role the image plays in politics, an even crueller dimension for women, who are always less numerous than men in this field and too often identified with or reduced to their appearance. Though her poster presented her status as “Indépendante” (originally in French), she was surprised to see that her official registration—regulated by Federal law—did not provide for a feminine version of the term; in her eyes this was proof of a system that discriminates against women.

Kim Waldron made full use of her body as a pregnant woman, and then of her newborn daughter, as instruments to market her image as a politician. She partook in the show that politicians put on in a democratic system which depends on traditional and social media to function. During her official campaign in the fall of 2015, she participated in television interviews. She also brought back the video Superstar featuring her daughter while they were visiting the Forbidden City, the power symbol of a bygone era. The subjective point of view is that of the baby in her stroller; it shows a sequence shot of a horde of Asian tourists in the process of filming her with their smart phones fighting for space to take a picture of this white child with blond hair.

The artist also brought back painted portraits from China that she presented during her campaign in the exhibition La très honorable

Kim Waldron. The title endowed the commissioned production with the official character of court or propaganda portraits, recalling those one often finds in countries under single party rule such as China, or those fancied by Stephen Harper when he was in power and promoted the old symbols of the monarchy.

However, during the 2015 elections, the Harper regime was nearing its end and Justin Trudeau’s victory seemed, for its part, a foregone conclusion. For Kim Waldron, the cynicism that surrounds politics stems, among other things, from the power of the big parties, over which the head undeniably exerts great influence; she/he is the party’s image and imposes discipline on her/his MPs. However, as an “Indépendante,” Kim Waldron presented herself as an autonomous figure convinced that her voice could bring a diversity that the hegemony of established parties does not make audible. Yet it is with this status as an independent candidate, as spelled out on her electoral posters that she opened a space for group portraits in her work. A first portrait took the shape of an election debate organized by the Optica centre and VIVA! Art Action, which allowed her to share a platform with other candidates of her riding in this videotaped event. The facsimile of the official voting ballot on which the names of all the candidates were displayed together, is another visual embodiment of this. The exhibition Public Office testified to the actual insertions of the aspiring politician Kim Waldron into a group she had initially not envisioned joining and whose points of convergence and divergence she also strove to present. On coloured cardboard posters mounted in the FOFA gallery window, she compiled the budget data pertaining to the campaign of each of the candidates, including their election results. The juxtaposed columns of figures invited comparisons and made the struggles between unequal forces explicit.

These hand transcribed figures, presented in red, blue, green, orange and white colour fields formed a visual mosaic that was made visible in public space; a nod to the guerrilla publicity tactics of the New York-based collective Group Material (Dazibaos, 1982), whose political engagement the artist admires.

With Public Office, Kim Waldron’s bodily figure ended up being erased. In its stead she substituted her name on an election ballot, and

finally her campaign data. The artist’s body has thus become data. She thereby reveals the foundations of our democracy, the system which is geared at self-perpetuation, and in which politicians do not even bother to really pay heed to the needs of people and rising inequities. In the year that followed Public Office, the Panama Papers affair made the news thanks to an historic information leak that revealed the implication of a 140 personalities in offshore companies.

The artist recounts how she was made aware of this by a bubble graph published in The Independent showing that the most highly implicated occupations were from the political field. This link strangely echoed her recently begun project where she had decided to open an offshore company with funding from a grant from the Canada Council for the Arts. The artist’s singular use of a grant indirectly sheds light on the Canadian government’s laxness regarding tax havens, a situation that the philosopher Alain Deneault has steadfastly denounced. In his book Une escroquerie légalisée [A legalized swindle] (Écosociété, 2016) he, among other things, brilliantly demonstrates how austerity policies are carried out at the expense of the most underprivileged, while wealthy and big corporations have fully legal access to tax havens. The tax earnings to properly maintain public services by adequately funding them escape the government, who thus becomes the devious accomplice of such manoeuvres.

In opening her company Kim Waldron Limited in Hong Kong, the artist put her finger on this tangled web and embarked on another adventure that will, hopefully, allow her to understand the complex mechanisms of what at first seem to be very opaque operations that are reserved for the insiders of the upper classes, thus suggesting bigger hurdles ahead.

As in her previous projects, she documents her process, including the authentification certificate that proves the creation of the company in question. The artist’s body is reincarnated in a new legal and administrative entity that will lead to new artworks, spinoff products to be marketed by the company.

Already accustomed to being an entrepreneur of herself, Kim Waldron has here found a new direction for her art, which could very well exemplify what the political science professor Wendy Brown has observed in democratic societies of the neoliberal era.

The entrepreneurial form proposed to the subject, which Michel Foucault calls the entrepreneur of the self, is increasingly slipping “towards a form that is profoundly inflected by financialization,” in which the credit and rating agencies of financial capital and the institutions that manage it henceforth govern our lives.

This turn in the artist’s practice promises to be rich in developments, guided by the impetus to take self-representation elsewhere by proposing new forms of subjectivation that no longer require the image of her real body. No image could more eloquently capture this transition than the one that Kim Waldron’s camera recorded in Hong Kong from the tower that houses her company. The surrounding glass buildings display how the transparency of the materials is nothing compared to the opacity of the financial secrets of this world.

The image also subtly betrays the presence of the artist, in the fleeting reflection of a movement that leads us back to her and her capacity to reinvent herself.

Peu après le début de ma campagne électorale, j’ai donné naissance à mon deuxième enfant, Margot Eleanor Ross. Toutes les personnes présentes dans la chambre, incluant les médecins et les infirmières, ont été surpris du fait que Margot n’a pas crié en naissant : elle a parlé. Son babillage n’était pas compréhensible ; on aurait dit qu’elle avait tout entendu in utero et qu’elle était maintenant prête à partager.

Margot a influencé la teneur de ma campagne. Elle n’a pas été que le ventre proéminent sur l’affiche ; elle m’a aussi fait comprendre que c’était pour elle que je me présentais. Aux paliers municipal, provincial et fédéral, les femmes occupent en moyenne 25% des sièges, alors que nous composons 50% de la population1. Nous avons besoin de l’apport de plus de voix de femmes dans la discussion politique. Nous avons besoin de plus de femmes en situation de pouvoir.

Devenant adulte, je me suis toujours méfiée des politiciens parce qu’ils me semblaient malhonnêtes. Je n’étais pas du tout intéressée à faire de la politique. Prononcer des discours et participer à des débats publics ne sont pas naturellement mes points forts. Cependant, tout au long du montage de ma campagne électorale, j’ai découvert que les stratégies visuelles et la présentation de mon travail artistique pour les médias et pour les comités de financement m’avaient, en fait, préparée à l’autoreprésentation. Une bonne part de la dynamique en jeu dans le milieu de l’art trouve un écho dans le monde politique.

J’étais nerveuse avant mes entrevues avec Vice News et Infoman. Les entrevues avec les politiciens me semblaient un exercice risqué, puisque les médias tournent souvent au

ridicule les figures publiques. C’est Vice qui m’a d’abord contactée, me demandant s’il était possible de m’interviewer pendant que je posais des affiches dans le comté de Papineau. L’idée ne me plaisait pas et j’ai suggéré que l’interview se déroule dans la galerie où je présentais une exposition intitulée La très honorable Kim Waldron (montrant trois tableaux que j’avais fait faire en Chine par le peintre Wang Wei à partir de la photographie de mon affiche de campagne).

Par contre, j’avais aussi des doutes sur la conduite de l’interview dans la galerie.

Je voulais m’adresser à autant d’électrices et d’électeurs que possible, et l’association du cube blanc aux cercles élitistes n’était pas l’image que je souhaitais projeter. J’ai réalisé par la suite que la galerie était l’endroit où je me sentais le plus à l’aise. J’ai compris que c’était depuis ma position d’artiste que je me présentais, en toute sincérité, pour devenir une représentante fédérale.

J’ai pensé avoir bousillé l’interview avec Vice, mais ils ont réussi à faire un montage qui fonctionnait. La plupart des gens que j’ai rencontrés, y compris le journaliste de Vice, m’ont demandé si ma campagne était simplement un projet artistique. Le contraire est plus proche de la vérité ; c’est ma pratique artistique qui m’a donné la confiance requise pour me présenter comme candidate. En fait, c’est dans un contexte artistique que j’ai vécu l’une des plus grandes expériences de transformation personnelle en campagne.

Durant le Débat 2015 des candidat.e.s de Papineau organisé par Optica, centre d’art contemporain, et par le festival de performance VIVA! Art Action, je me suis trouvée sur scène en compagnie de trois candidates et de

trois candidats. Durant toute la performance, ma voix était égale à celles des autres. C’est alors que j’ai perçu que ma position d’artiste se présentant aux élections était tout aussi crédible que celles de mes collègues.

Mon interview avec Infoman s’est déroulée le jour de l’Action de grâce. Je me suis présentée avec ma fille qui allait bientôt avoir un an. Mon affiche avait vraiment réussi à faire évoluer les idées sur l’autoreprésentation dans la sphère publique et je voulais présenter la fillette qui était sortie du gros ventre qu’on voyait sur l’affiche de campagne. Et on n’a eu d’yeux que pour Margot. J’ai également utilisé ma fille comme accessoire quand je l’ai portée sur mon dos au moment où j’étais à la recherche de signatures pour appuyer ma candidature. Ce geste découlait aussi bien de la stratégie que de la nécessité, puisque se présenter aux élections quand on a de jeunes enfants et qu’on est sans financement vous laisse très peu d’options en matière de garderie.

Alors que je recueillais des signatures, les gens se demandaient souvent si voter pour moi n’équivalait pas à annuler leur vote. Je répondais que je pensais que nous votons contre des partis plutôt que pour des candidats, que nous avons besoin d’une plus grande variété de voix au gouvernement, que c’est la raison pour laquelle je me présentais comme candidate indépendante. J’ai utilisé le mot « indépendante » comme slogan sur mon affiche de campagne et ce mot, combiné à mon image, envoyait un message féministe puissant. Le jour où je suis allée déposer les 100 signatures requises au bureau d’Élections Canada, j’ai été surprise de découvrir que j’allais être enregistrée comme « candidat indépendant ».

La loi électorale ne reconnaît pas l’accord au féminin et, quand j’ai déposé une plainte durant les élections en demandant à être reconnue comme femme, j’ai attiré l’attention des médias. Même si ma candidature comme indépendante a pu me sembler un combat pénible, je crois qu’un tel processus peut faire avancer le débat.

Deux jours après avoir reçu une bourse du Conseil des arts du Canada afin d’ouvrir une compagnie offshore, l’histoire des Panama Papers éclatait. Les Panama Papers, c’est une fuite de 11,5 millions de fichiers de la firme Mossack Fonseca, un cabinet d’avocats et de conseil en placements financiers situé

au Panama, fuite qui révélait, dans le détail, des renseignements financiers et des échanges entre avocats et clients pour plus de 214 488 entités offshore2. The Independent a publié un graphique à bulles donnant les occupations des gens mentionnés dans les Panama Papers, et les politiciens étaient les bons premiers. M’étant présentée comme candidate aux élections fédérales du Canada en 2015, ce graphique a mené à la blague que la prochaine étape logique pour moi était d’ouvrir une compagnie offshore.

Devant cette tournure des événements, j’ai envisagé l’idée d’ouvrir ma compagnie au Panama, mais j’ai décidé par la suite qu’il valait mieux exploiter les contacts que j’avais faits en Chine. J’ai découvert que plusieurs des compagnies établies en Chine continentale avaient choisi de s’incorporer à Hong Kong pour faciliter la conduite de leurs affaires avec des étrangers. J’avais déjà exploré la vie ouvrière en Chine avec le projet Made in Québec, et cela tombait sous le sens de choisir de développer ma pratique artistique en ouvrant une compagnie offshore à Hong Kong.

Le 13 juillet 2016, j’ai ouvert Kim Waldron Limited, 金姆沃爾德倫有限公. L’adresse de la compagnie est Rm. 2107, Lippo Centre Tower 2, 89 Queensway, Admiralty, Hong Kong.

Le secrétaire nommé de la compagnie est Joy Enterprise Secretary Services Limited. Le produit ou service principal est l’Œuvre d’art.

A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Politician

Shortly after the beginning of my election campaign I gave birth to my second child, Margot Eleanor Ross. Everyone present in the room, including the doctors and nurses, were surprised by the fact that Margot didn’t scream when she was born, she spoke. Her babbling wasn’t comprehensible—it seemed like she had been listening to everything in utero and she was ready to share.

Margot influenced the substance of my campaign. It wasn’t just the pregnant belly on the poster, but how I came to understand that I was running for her. On the municipal, provincial and federal levels, women on average hold 25% of the seats and we make up 50% of the population1. We need more female voices contributing to the political discussion. We need more women in power.

Growing up I had always been weary of politicians as I felt they were dishonest. I had very little interest in becoming a politician.

Making speeches and taking part in public debate are not my natural strengths. However, through the process of mounting my election campaign I discovered that visual strategies and framing my artwork for the media and funding committees had actually prepared me for self-representation. Many of the dynamics at play in the art world translate into the realm of politics.

I was anxious before my interviews with Vice News and Infoman. Interviews with politicians loomed large in my mind, as the media often ridicules public figures. Vice approached me first, asking if they could interview me while I was putting up signs in the Papineau riding. I balked at the idea and suggested hosting the interview at the gallery where I was presenting an exhibition titled

Nevertheless, I had misgivings about staging the interview in the gallery. I wanted to appeal to as many voters as possible and the association of the white cube with elite circles was not the image that I wanted to project. I realized afterward that the gallery was where I felt most comfortable.

I then understood that I was sincerely running to become a federal representative from the position of an artist.

I thought I bombed the interview with Vice but they edited everything into something that worked. Most people I encountered, including the journalist from Vice, questioned if my campaign was just an art project. The opposite is closer to the truth; it was my art practice that afforded me the confidence to put myself forward as a candidate. In fact, the art context provided me with one of the most personally transformative experiences of my campaign. During the Papineau All-Candidates Debate 2015 organized by Optica, a centre for contemporary art, and VIVA! Art Action performance festival I found myself on a stage with six candidates. For the duration of that performance my voice was equal to all of the other voices. In that moment, I perceived my position as an artist running for federal office to be just as credible as any position that candidates were running from.

My Infoman interview took place on Thanksgiving Day. I showed up with my daughter who was just shy of turning one.

My poster had been really successful at pushing people’s ideas about self-representation in the public sphere and I wanted to present the

little girl within the pregnant belly on my campaign poster. Margot stole the show.

I also used my daughter as a prop when I wore her on my back seeking signatures for my candidature. This was part strategy and part necessity, as running for office with small children and no financing leaves you with very few childcare options.

While gathering signatures, people would often question whether voting for me was throwing away their vote. I would answer that I think we vote against parties instead of for candidates and that I think we need more diverse voices in government, which is why I presented myself as an independent candidate.

I used the French word indépendante as the slogan of my campaign poster, and this term, in combination with my image, sent a powerful feminist message. On the day I went to drop off the 100 required signatures at the Elections Canada office, I was surprised to discover I would be registered as candidat indépendant.

The electoral law does not recognize the feminine agreement, and I attracted media attention when I filed a complaint during the election asking that I be recognized as female.

Although it felt like a very uphill battle presenting myself as an independent, I am encouraged that the process of running can help move the discussion forward.

Two days after I received a grant from the Canada Council for the Arts to open an offshore company, the Panama Papers story broke. The Panama Papers are 11.5 million leaked documents from Mossack Fonseca, a law firm and corporate service provider in Panama, that detail financial and attorney– client information for more than 214,488 offshore entities2. The Independent published a bubble chart plotting the occupations of people mentioned in the Panama Papers and politician was by far the most referenced occupation. I like to joke that the next logical step after running for public office is to open an offshore company.

In the wake of all of this, I entertained the idea of opening my company in Panama but later decided that it was best to explore the contacts I had made in China. I discovered that many companies located in mainland China choose to incorporate in Hong Kong to facilitate doing business with foreigners.

with the Made in Québec project, and it made sense that I would choose to expand my art practice by opening an offshore company in Hong Kong.

Un portrait inversé

Une femme a un portrait dans son grenier.

Pendant qu’elle vieillit, le portrait rajeunit.

Non pas sa représentation dans l’image, mais l’image en soi. Il n’existe pas d’autres mots pour expliquer la chose. Vous regardez l’image et, d’une manière ou d’une autre, vous savez que vous êtes en train de regarder une conception différente, inversée, du temps.

Le cadre en bois rajeunit, le pigment, les coups de pinceau, l’idée même de réaliser l’œuvre au départ. Là-haut dans le grenier où pratiquement personne ne met les pieds, l’autoportrait, nonchalamment appuyé contre un mur, rajeunit. Pendant ce temps, la femme continue à vivre sa vie. Sa vie est la partie importante du présent récit, même s’il sera difficile de raconter cette histoire pour qu’elle demeure toujours limpide. Le problème qui se pose : elle sait ce qui se passe avec l’image dans le grenier et nous aussi. Ce serait exagéré de dire qu’elle y pense toujours, mais elle y pense de temps à autre, même davantage que de temps à autre. Pour elle, cette image représenterait ses « idéaux », ce sont ses idéaux qui rajeunissent ; mais pour nous, du moins jusqu’à maintenant, elle ne représente presque rien. C’est un prétexte, une fausse piste, une image qui vieillit, mais tout vieillit, à chaque minute de chaque jour. Non, je viens déjà de me fourvoyer. L’image ne vieillit pas, comme vous le savez déjà, l’image rajeunit en fait. C’est la partie contre-intuitive, magique, de ce récit. La partie qui n’a pas de sens.

Ai-je déjà mentionné qu’il existe plusieurs images de la femme, qui sont là, de par le monde, des peintures (en fait, celle dans le grenier est la seule), des photos, des dessins, des illustrations. Elle apparaît même sur des images où, apparemment, elle n’apparaît pas, en arrière-plan, ou juste une parcelle d’elle

en bordure du cadre. Ces images ont été réalisées pour répondre à une grande diversité d’objectifs. Par exemple, l’une est une image qui a fait partie d’une campagne publicitaire projetée. Cependant, quand les responsables de la compagnie ont vu l’image, ils y ont opposé leur veto. Ils ont pensé à leur produit, et ils ont pensé à l’image, et ils en sont venus à la conclusion pavlovienne que l’une ne pourrait pas vendre l’autre. (Ils ne voulaient pas dire que le produit ne pourrait pas vendre l’image, quoique cela aussi aurait pu être vrai.) Cette image publicitaire non utilisée a été placée non pas dans le grenier, mais dans un classeur. Laissez-moi tenter de retourner à la vie de la femme dont nous savons encore très peu. La partie de cette histoire qui est la plus importante est la partie dont nous en savons le moins à date.

Tel que je l’ai mentionné, la partie la plus importante, c’est la vie de cette femme.

Un jour, la femme décide de tenter une expérience. Elle monte au grenier avec un appareil photo grand format et prend des photos du portrait. C’est une femme qui photographie un portrait d’elle-même, pendant que ce portrait rajeunit, pour découvrir si elle peut saisir photographiquement cette inversion peinte, magique, de l’âge. Ce faisant, elle réalise que la plupart des portraits historiques ont été créés sous forme de peintures, puis qu’une bonne part des portraits historiques récents ont été saisis sur pellicule photographique, alors que maintenant les portraits sont saisis de manière numérique et sont souvent appelés égoportraits. (Nous connaissons déjà la représentation proportionnelle du genre des peintres historiques en lien avec celle des sujets historiques.

n’ont pas changé autant qu’elles auraient dû.) Elle n’était pas peintre, et donc elle s’est demandé : qu’est-ce que ce serait de peindre le portrait d’une autre personne ? Ou de peindre le sien ? De mêler consciemment ou inconsciemment votre propre personnalité avec la personnalité et l’image du modèle ?

Ou avec la personnalité et l’image dans le miroir ? Elle a fait développer les photographies qu’elle avait prises du tableau dans le grenier et a dû admettre qu’elle trouvait que les résultats n’avaient vraiment rien de spectaculaire.

Le tableau ressemblait simplement à un tableau normal, il n’y avait pas de preuve qu’il rajeunissait sous ses yeux (ou ceux de l’appareil photo). Tout comme, dans le cas d’une photographie normale d’une personne normale, il n’y a pas de preuve qu’elles vieillissent devant nos yeux. Le processus se fait trop lentement. (Vaut-il la peine de souligner que les yeux d’un appareil photo s’appellent un objectif ?)

La femme sait que plusieurs images d’elle existent quelque part dans le monde. Elle en a vu plusieurs. Elle en a aussi créé plusieurs.

Certaines de ces images ont été vendues à petit profit. Un jour, elle reçoit un courriel de quelqu’un qui possède une image d’elle, quelqu’un qu’elle n’a jamais rencontré : « Vous ne me connaissez pas, commence le courriel, mais d’une certaine et étrange manière, j’ai l’impression de vous connaître.

Tous les jours, alors que je bois mon café matinal, je peux regarder tout au fond de la salle à manger où est accrochée une image de vous sur mon mur. Peut-être le savez-vous déjà ou peut-être pas, je n’en suis pas certain. » Elle ne le savait pas. Le courriel poursuit : « Je sais que ce n’est pas vraiment vous qui me regardez, sur cette image, depuis le fin fond de la pièce. Ce n’est pas vous, mais je me sens en quelque sorte jugé par ce regard et, donc, d’une certaine manière, j’ai l’impression d’être jugé par vous. Il va sans dire que je suis fort probablement en train d’être jugé par ma propre conscience coupable. Vous avez peut-être deviné la raison précise qui sous-tend ce sentiment d’être jugé. Cela a à voir avec la richesse, avec ma capacité d’acheter votre image ainsi que d’autres nombreuses et remarquables œuvres d’art.

La somme d’argent que j’ai payée pour cette œuvre est pratiquement rien pour moi, de la petite monnaie. Si vous ne savez probablement pas que je bois mon café à chaque matin

sous le regard réprobateur de votre image, c’est parce que je l’ai achetée sur un marché secondaire. C’est pour cette raison que je sais que, du montant que j’ai payé pour elle, rien de cet argent ne vous est allé directement.

Dans ma vie, surtout en vieillissant, je me sens coupable ou repentant à propos de bien des choses et, pour une raison quelconque, celle-ci en est une. Vous trouverez donc ci-joint, si vous choisissez d’accepter, un mandat pour la somme exacte que j’ai payée pour votre œuvre. Comme je l’ai dit, pour moi ce n’est rien, mais je soupçonne que pour vous c’est une somme considérable. Je ne vois pas pourquoi vous n’accepteriez pas. » Elle arrête de lire, transfère le mandat dans con compte (le courriel dit juste ; pour elle, c’est un montant considérable) et ferme son ordinateur.

Elle ne répond pas au courriel, ni ce jour-là ni les jours suivants. Elle ne peut pas se permettre de refuser l’argent, mais elle ne veut certainement pas l’en remercier. Elle n’entend plus jamais parler de lui. Dans son monde idéal, il l’appuierait financièrement tout en continuant à se sentir coupable. Cette culpabilité le mènerait peut-être à d’autres bonnes actions futures. Elle ne peut qu’espérer.

Dans le grenier, le tableau continue son voyage vers la jeunesse. (Pendant un instant, elle se demande : le tableau sait-il qu’il rajeunit ? Mais comment pourrait-il le savoir.) À tous les deux mois, elle monte au grenier pour une visite. Elle s’assied face au tableau et, un jour, elle finit même par lui parler. Cette conversation est privée, c’est entre elle et le tableau, donc je ne la relaterai pas ici. Bien sûr, c’est elle qui parle, le tableau ne répond pas. Ou il ne répond qu’en rajeunissant à un rythme imperceptible, bien que parfois elle ait presque l’impression qu’elle peut le sentir en train de changer sous ses yeux.

Dans le grenier, il y a plusieurs autres objets qui y ont été apportés parce qu’on n’en avait plus besoin dans le reste de la maison. Je n’en ferai pas la liste. Je me concentrerai seulement sur un article en particulier : un appareil photo polaroïd qui ne fonctionne plus. À une époque, c’était nouveau que de pouvoir prendre une photo et d’en voir presque instantanément le résultat.

Maintenant, ce n’est évidemment plus le cas.

Elle prend l’appareil et le tient dans ses mains.

Il n’a pas fonctionné depuis très longtemps.

Elle l’examine sous tous les angles, le faisant passer calmement d’une main à l’autre. Ce qui

fut autrefois une chose nouvelle et excitante n’est aujourd’hui, à peine, qu’un article nostalgique. Étrangement, pendant qu’elle l’examine, il se met soudain en marche, et une image sort de la fente avant en ronronnant.

Elle dépose l’appareil et tient l’image devant elle, la fixant, l’observant pendant qu’elle se développe. Elle n’est pas étonnée de voir qu’il s’agit d’une image d’elle-même. Mais pas d’elle aujourd’hui. C’est elle il y a quinze ans, la dernière fois qu’elle se souvient d’avoir utilisé l’appareil photo, la dernière fois qu’elle se souvient de l’avoir vu fonctionner. Il est étrange de voir la version plus jeune d’elle-même se mettre lentement au foyer dans le cadre blanc de la photo polaroïd. Tout comme il est étrange de lever le regard et de voir une version peinte d’elle en plus jeune, appuyée contre le mur. Puis elle a une idée bizarre : les images ne seraient-elles pas toutes des nous-mêmes en plus jeunes. Chaque image,

peu importe comment elle est imaginée ou organisée, est simultanément l’image documentaire d’un moment particulier du passé. Même un égoportrait est une image de nous quelques secondes auparavant, quand il a été pris. Elle ne veut pas vivre dans le passé.

Elle préfère vivre dans le présent, si l’on peut dire, même, que pareille chose existe. Elle pose l’image polaroïd encore en développement contre le tableau et retourne en bas à sa vie normale.

Dorian Gray avait une image dans son grenier pour raconter une histoire de corruption. Il ne s’agit pas ici d’une histoire de corruption. L’image dans le grenier de la femme n’est qu’une autre image, juste une autre image, bien qu’elle soit dotée de certaines qualités magiques. Ça dépend comment on choisit de raconter l’histoire. J’ai choisi de mal la raconter, peut-être parce que j’ai choisi de la raconter en n’employant que des mots.

La pratique de Jacob Wren est une combinaison étonnante de littérature, de performances collaboratives et d’arts visuels. Parmi ses titres publiés, notons Le Génie des autres, La famille se crée en copulant, Revenge Fantasies of the Politically Dispossessed, Polyamorous Love Song (finaliste du Fence Modern Prize-Prose et recensé parmi les cent meilleurs livres de l’année 2014 par The Globe and Mail) et son récent Rich and Poor (finaliste du Prix Huge MacLennan, Fiction, de la Québec Writers’ Federation 2016).

L’essentiel de son travail performatif a été réalisé à titre de codirecteur artistique du groupe interdisciplinaire montréalais PME-ART, qu’il codirige avec Sylvie Lachance. A woman has a portrait in her attic. As she gets older the picture gets younger. Not her image in the picture but the picture itself.

There are no other words to explain this. You look at the picture and somehow you know you are looking at a different, a reverse, understanding of time. The wooden frame gets younger, the pigment, the brushstrokes, the idea to even make the work in the first place. Up there in the attic, where almost no one ever goes, the self-portrait carelessly leans against a wall getting younger.

Meanwhile the woman continues living her life. Her life is the important part of this story, though it will be difficult to tell the story in a way that makes this at all times clear.

The problem is: she knows about the picture in the attic and so do we. It would be an exaggeration to say she thinks about it constantly, but she does think about it, from time to time, more than from time to time.

For her, this picture represents something like her “ideals,” it is her ideals that are getting younger, but for us, at least so far, it represents almost nothing. It is a MacGuffin, a red herring, a picture that is getting older, but everything is getting older, every minute of every day.

No, already I’ve gotten myself confused. The picture is not getting older, as you already know the picture is actually getting younger.

That is the counter-intuitive, the magical, part of this story. The part that makes no sense.

Have I mentioned yet that there are many pictures of the woman, existing out there somewhere in the world, paintings (well, mainly just the one painting in the attic), photographs, drawings, illustrations. She even appears in images she apparently doesn’t appear in, in the background, or just a sliver of her at the edge of the frame. These images

have been made for a wide variety of purposes.

For example, one is an image that was part of a planned advertising campaign. However, when the company saw the image they vetoed it. They thought of their product, and they thought of the image, and came to the kneejerk conclusion that one would not be able to sell the other. (They did not mean that the product would not be able to sell the image, though that was probably true as well.) This unused advertising image was placed not in an attic but in a filing cabinet. Let me try to get back to the woman’s life, which we still know relatively little about. The part of this story that is most important is the part we so far know least about. As I have already mentioned, the part that is most important is this woman’s life.

One day the woman decides to attempt an experiment. She goes up into the attic with a large format camera and photographs the portrait. It is a woman photographing a portrait of herself, as the portrait is getting younger, to find out if she can photographically capture this magical painted reversal of age.

As she does so, she realizes that for much of history portraits were created from paint, then for much of more recent history portraits were captured on photographic film, while now portraits are captured digitally and often called selfies. (We already know the proportional gender of the historical painters in relation to the proportional gender of the historical subjects. This is a contemporary story and things have not changed nearly as much as they should.) She was not a painter, so she asked herself: what would it feel like to paint another person’s portrait? Or to paint her own? To consciously or unconsciously mix your own personality with the personality and image of the sitter? Or with the personality

and image in the mirror? She had the photographs she took of the painting in the attic developed and had to admit she found the results rather unspectacular. It just looked like a normal painting, there was no evidence that it was getting younger before her (or the camera’s) eyes. Just as in a normal photograph of a normal person there is no evidence that they are getting older before our eyes. The process moves too slowly. (Is it worth noting that the eye of a camera is called a lens?)

The woman knows that there are many images of her that exist somewhere out there in the world. She has seen many of them.

She has also created many of them. Some of these images have even been sold for a small profit. Once she received an email from someone who owned an image of her, someone she had never met. “You don’t know me,” the email began, “but in some strange way I feel that I know you. Every day, as I drink my morning coffee, I can look to the far end of the dining room where a picture of you hangs on my wall. Maybe you already know this and maybe you don’t, I’m not quite sure.”

She did not already know this. The email continued: “I know it is not actually you looking at me, out from that image, across the entire length of the room. It is not you, but I feel somehow judged by that gaze and therefore, in some sense, I feel I am being judged by you. It goes without saying that I am most likely only being judged by my own guilty conscience. You might have already guessed the particular reason for this feeling of being judged. It has to do with wealth, with my ability to purchase your image alongside many other remarkable works of art. The amount of money this work cost is almost nothing to me, pocket change. The reason you might not know that I drink my coffee every morning under the judgmental gaze of your image is because I purchased it on the secondary market. That is why I know, of the amount I paid for it, none of the money went directly to you. In my life, especially as I get older, I feel guilty or regretful about many things, and for some reason this is one of them.

Therefore you will find attached, if you choose to accept it, a money order for the exact amount I originally paid for your work.

As I said, for me it is nothing, but I suspect for you it will be a substantial sum. I see no reason you should not accept.” She stopped reading, transferred the money order into

her account (what the email said was true, for her it was a substantial amount), and shut down her computer. She did not reply to the email, on that day or any other. She could not afford to refuse the money but she certainly did not want to thank him for it. She never heard from him again. In her ideal world, he would assist her financially while continuing to feel guilt. Maybe this guilt would lead him toward other good deeds in the future. She could only hope.

In the attic the painting continues its journey toward youth. (For a moment she wonders: does the painting know it’s getting younger. But how could it know.) Every few months she heads up to the attic for a visit.

She sits across from the painting and, on this particular day, she even finds herself talking to it. This conversation is private, just between her and the painting, so I will not recount it here. Of course she does all the talking, the painting does not respond. Or it only responds by getting younger at an imperceptible rate, though at times she almost feels as if she can sense it changing before her eyes. In the attic there are many other objects that have been brought there because they were no longer needed in the rest of the house. I will not list them all. I will focus only on one particular item: a polaroid camera that no longer works.

At one time it was a novelty to be able to take a picture and almost instantly see the results.

Now this is obviously no longer the case. She picks up the camera and holds it in her hands.

It hasn’t worked for a very long time. She examines it from every angle, rotating it calmly from hand to hand. What was once an exciting new thing is now little more than an item of nostalgia. Strangely, as she examines it, it suddenly goes off, a picture smoothly whirring out the front slot. She puts down the camera and holds the picture in front of her, staring at it, watching as it slowly develops. She is not surprised to see that it’s a picture of her.

But not her now. Her from fifteen years ago, the last time she remembers using the camera, the last time she remembers it working. It is strange to see her younger self slowly come into focus within the white frame of the polaroid. Just as it is also strange to look up and see a painted version of her younger self, leaning against the wall. And then she has a strange thought: aren’t all images of our younger selves. Every image, no matter how imagined or arranged, is simultaneously

a documentary image from some moment in the past. Even a selfie is an image of us a few seconds ago when it was first taken. She does not want to live in the past. She prefers to live in the present, if such a thing can even be said to exist. She leans the still developing polaroid against the painting and heads downstairs back to her normal life.

Dorian Gray had a picture in his attic to tell a story of corruption. This is not a story of corruption. The picture in the woman’s attic is just another picture, just another image, albeit one with certain magical qualities.

It depends how you choose to tell the story.

I’ve chosen to tell it badly, perhaps because I’ve chosen to tell it using only words.

Mr. Jean Charest, The student conflict has been marked by a lack of direct dialogue between the student associations and your government. Your refusal to negotiate led to punches and counter punches delivered publicly through the media. After three months of protest, both sides were holding daily news conferences. The messages were clouded by spin. As a student, it became quite difficult to determine my position amongst all of the misinformation. Finally, at the end of May, your government sat down at the negotiating table with the students. Several days later you pulled out of the talks while simultaneously stating that your door is always open to further discussion.

I’m perplexed. What do you mean by your door is open when you have closed down the only forum for tangible discussion? I’m similarly confused about your decision to pass Bill 78, which was presented as the only possible resolution. I don’t believe that Bill 78 was the only means of resolving the student conflict. Most problematically, I don’t believe that you want to resolve the student conflict.

I abide by the laws of my government but I am having a hard time seeing how this special law is just. The law sends a clear message that there is now a whopping price attached to implementing a strike. In a democracy it shouldn’t be illegal to go on strike (by strike here, I mean students collectively voting to temporarily stop going to class in protest against the raise in tuition fees).

Fines of up to $125,000 have definitely affected the way my student union representatives operate. With this law, the burden of proof has been shifted onto my union’s shoulders—being involved with the student protests could lead to their immediate loss of funding until they can prove their innocence. Bill 78 uses the threat of financial liability as a means of intimidation and demonizes students who want to enforce their legitimate democratic decision to go on strike.

Your government has taken the position that the people who benefit should pay for their education. I agree with this statement only I think it is society as a whole that benefits from an educated population. Repeatedly your Education Ministers have insisted that tuition increases are not unreasonable in comparison to other provinces in Canada or to the cost of a higher education in the United States. Why are we looking at these standards as something we should emulate in Quebec? Regardless of my personal beliefs, I would be willing to accept a tuition increase if it was made clear to me why we need to change how we structure our society. If the proposed increase of student fees is an inevitable fact and your government sees no other alternative for balancing the Quebec budget, why haven’t you been able to sit down with the student associations in order to explain this conclusion?

Given that almost all the discussion that your government has had with the student associations has taken place through the media, I often lack confidence in your statements. In this context, how am I to determine the truth of your claims?
