From the President and CEO
Dear Friends,
Welcome to Suffs, the Tony Award®–winning musical that brings fresh insight, humor, and heart to the story of the brilliant and determined women who fought for the right to vote. We’re especially honored to present this production in the Academy of Music—the very building where Susan B. Anthony once spoke passionately about women’s suffrage—making its message all the more resonant as we begin 2026 and share in our city’s and our nation’s semi-quincentennial celebration.
As the country approaches its 250th birthday, we are proud to honor this milestone by elevating voices that were excluded in 1776, especially those of women and Black men whose contributions built this nation, but who have not always benefitted from its founding promises. That storytelling begins on our Broadway stage with the powerful story of Suffs and continues on our concert stages this May as The Philadelphia Orchestra presents world premieres by celebrated Pulitzer Prize-winning Black American composers: a piano concerto by Philadelphia-based composer Tyshawn Sorey, written for Aaron Diehl, and Wynton Marsalis’s Symphony No. 5 (“Liberty”), performed with the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra. These commissions further our commitment to amplifying historically marginalized voices, a commitment reflected in the Orchestra’s GRAMMY®–winning Florence Price recording and this year’s nominations for works by William Grant Still and Margaret Bonds.
This landmark year also invites us to reflect on important chapters that shape our organization’s story. All season long we are celebrating The Philadelphia Orchestra’s 125th anniversary, and we look forward to the 25th birthday of our Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts—two milestones that highlight our longstanding role as a cultural home for creativity and civic expression. Since the opening of the Academy of Music nearly 170 years ago, we have been Philadelphia’s home for the performing arts, now welcoming more than one million visitors each year. From Broadway blockbusters and our GRAMMY-winning Orchestra to boundary-pushing jazz, major comedy tours, family concerts, free outdoor festivals, and community gatherings, we are proud to offer more than 1,500 events annually—programming for every audience, every generation, and every corner of our city.
Thank you for joining us for Suffs and for being part of this extraordinary year in our city’s cultural life. We hope you enjoy the performance, and we look forward to welcoming you back throughout the year.
Best regards,
Ryan Fleur President and CEO
