Jazz Standards This unique in-school program inspires 3rd–6th graders to explore the question, “What is Jazz?” The program is a catalyst for students to attend Neighborhood Jams, where they can receive free instruments and instruction.

Exploring Black History & Social Change with Jazz
Building Teamwork & Community through Musical Theater
Jazz4Freedom is a program developed for 4th grade students linking jazz to Black History in Pennsylvania and beyond. Led by our experienced teaching artists, 4th graders are first engaged with a pre-show class about the Harlem Renaissance and growth of jazz in Philadelphia. The highlight of the program is a field trip to the Kimmel Center for a Jazz4Freedom performance featuring music, dance, and commentary on social change throughout history. Students are inspired by a post-show class which links the Civil Rights Movement to jazz and provides an opportunity for reflection on the continuation of social change. Finally, teachers are empowered to continue the discussion in their classrooms through study guides connecting Jazz4Freedom to academic standards in Social Studies and Language Arts.
One Musical Philadelphia explores the unique American art form of musical theater, while building community and encouraging teamwork. The program begins with an introductory workshop for 5th graders scheduled during the school day. Students then self-select to participate in an 8-week residency to learn songs and dances from a show selected by the Kimmel Cultural Campus. Participants share the routines with classmates during in-school assemblies, with support provided by the Kimmel staff. Finally, buses bring students and their families to the Kimmel Cultural Campus for an awesome performance. Students from schools across the region come together to perform their production numbers in one unforgettable finale!

#PHILLYBEATZ is a technology-based creativity celebration designed for 6th graders. The program starts when Kimmel artists deliver a beat-making workshop in 6th grade classrooms. Students then self-select to participate in a 6-week after school residency program, where they learn how to create their own music using electronic music software and embrace their creativity. Upon completion of the program, students are bused to the Kimmel Cultural Campus to attend a Creativity Festival where artists produce new work with the students. The day ends with an exclusive Hip Hop performance by professional performing artists premiering works inspired by the students’songs on stage at the Kimmel Center!
More Free Programs Middle School Musical Theater Festival During an exciting day-long celebration of musical theater on the Kimmel Cultural Campus, middle school students from throughout the region are taught a musical number and perform on stage at the Kimmel Center. The entire day culminates in a master class with a Broadway artist! Middle School Jazz Festival A thrilling day for middle school music students of all levels, featuring instrumental master classes, a chance to “sit in” with professional jazz musicians during a sectional rehearsal, and an exclusive concert by a Philadelphia-based big band. ShowStoppers AllStars Meeting at the Kimmel Center after school, advanced students interested in musical theater rehearse and prepare for performances on the Campus and in the community. Students gain leadership skills through assisting younger students in learning about musical theater. Entry by audition.
Creative Music Program On weekends during the school year, talented teens with a serious interest in music are exposed to a well-rounded jazz education experience on the Kimmel Cultural Campus. Intermediate and advanced students improve their jazz music skills in this program with master classes and performance opportunities on the Campus and in the community. Entry by audition. Neighborhood Jams The developmental program for Creative Music Program provides students with an interest in learning to play traditional jazz instruments access to instruments and instruction directly at select neighborhood sites. Current sites include Mill Creek and Mander Recreation Centers.
