Corona Innovation Center BREAKS GROUND

T

he ground-breaking ceremony for the Corona Innovation Center on Friday, November 30, 2018 marked a major milestone for Corona’s regional economic development impact, as well as local and regional job creation.

The Corona Innovation Center will focus on growing the local economy in collaboration with local and regional businesses, colleges and universities. This project will create an environment that will foster collaborative

5th Annual Chili CookOff & Craft Brew Festival February 23 C ircle City Rotary supports many nonprofit organizations throughout the year.

Proceeds from the 2019 Fire & Ice Chili Cook-Off & Craft Beer Festival, scheduled for Saturday, February 23, will enable Circle City Rotary to continue its financial support to those less fortunate. 100% of the net proceeds from this event will be used directly to fund benevolent service projects right here in our own backyard as well as in other countries, where the need is greatest and we make a difference in people’s quality of life.

Over 25 Chili Cook-Off contestants in two categories will be competing for prizes. There will be beer tasting from approximately 20 craft breweries, as well as other food available and alternative beverages for purchase. A Resource for Business HANDLING HOMELESSNESS

N

ationally, homelessness has become an epidemic. You don’t have to look at San Francisco or Seattle to see how horribly things are developing. Corona shares the problem; homelessness is rampant. As the Corona Chamber conducted surveys of businesses, many concerns were received from business owners, man-

agers and property management companies concerning this issue. The top three worries mentioned in our surveys were concerns for customer safety, the homeless occupying their building’s entry ways, and health concerns caused by public urination, defecation and trash. Each of these problems are common in Corona.

Fortunately, Corona’s City government is very proactive. Under the direction of the Corona Police Department, the H.O.P.E. Team was created 2015 to address the growing needs of the homeless population. The teams’ role is to be the first responders to calls regarding the homeless and mentally ill. They also regularly seek out and connect with people who are

homeless to provide them with options and available services.

Additionally, the H.O.P.E. Team assists businesses that are negatively impacted by the issue of homelessness. Businesses and property managers can file a ‘Trespass Arrest Authorization Form’ with the Corona Police Department, providing the officers permission to enter private property and arrest those individuals who are trespassing. The form needs to be refiled every 6 months, and ‘No Trespassing’ signs must be posted on the affected building/ property.

The Corona Chamber has coordinated a seminar with the Corona Police Department to learn about the laws, their property rights, and how to develop plans to preserve their storefronts. It will be held on Thursday, January 24 at 8am at the City of Corona’s multipurpose room (400 S. Vicentia Ave., Corona 92882). A Note from the CEO A

s January typically begins with resolutions, there was a time for reflection on the many blessings we have and enjoy in our community of CORONA. It seems like yesterday we were preparing for 2018, yet those 12 months rapidly passed us by. With tremendous admiration to my Board of Directors (all business owners or managers who volunteer to serve our business organization), and my professional staff (who take the numerous calls, visits, and interruptions – all with smiles on their faces and willingness to serve others), I am grateful. In May 2001, I began what I thought would be a one year maximum stint, to come in, improve customer service, and work on development of the staff…and then the 3rd day arrived, I realized I was hooked for life, that this is my ideal job – my career – and I love working here!

Each year our top volunteer, the Chairman of the Board, selects a theme. Mike Ryan, 2019 Chair, has selected Make A Difference. This is not just three words thrown together, but more like a mandate and goal to accomplish. As Mike shares, this is in life, in work, and in everything you do. It’s amazing how our leadership selects the ideal theme which parallels our teams’ focus, every day!

December’s outreach for the Angel Tree program proved successful. You can read more information about this project on our website, where students attending our local schools are requesting gifts for the holidays, not an X-box or electronics, but underwear, socks, pillows for their younger siblings, and other necessities many of us take for granted. Our business community came together to Make A Difference by donating funds, and we worked with many CORONA Chamber members to help: Corona Host Lions provided funding for gifts; we secured gift cards from Corona Chamber Member Stater Bros, where they gave us extra cards, enabling us to reach out to three schools: Corona High, Orange Grove High, and Jefferson Elementary. Mrs. Julie Stivers from CHS is showcasing the gift cards for her students, a true blessing for the holiday! (PHOTO HERE) Believe me, we did Make A Difference!

During my visits of various businesses in December, I had the pleasure to tour Phenix Technology, where they manufacture helmets for fire departments. All parts are made in the USA, and finished products are shipped throughout America and numerous countries overseas. They are very big into LEAN Manufacturing,

which builds upon numerous team effort improvements. My tour was intensive, detailed and very organized – just as organized as each work station, task to be done (from cleaning restrooms to washing and drying your hands).

Angel Sanchez, President/CEO of Phenix, will be the keynote speaker on January 14 for our Coffee with an Entrepreneur (RSVP at MyChamber. org). This is free to attend, begins at 8am, and during the 90 minutes, Angel will provide you with several nuggets that you can walk away and

On March 7, we will have a seminar on LEAN Manufacturing, which Angel is coordinating now. We are working on credit card security and fraud as well. As you have heard in the news recently, the hospitality industry has experienced challenges, and fines could reach $25,000 per infraction.

Another need for our business community is resources to deal with the homeless issue. We are working with the Corona Police Department to host a FREE seminar on January 24. Throughout 2019, the CORONA Chamber will be providing a variety of seminars for our business community. Many of them are free to the public thanks to our partnerships with the City of Corona and County of Riverside. ach fall since 1910, local business leaders that comprise the Corona Chamber of Commerce have gathered to make plans to grow Corona business in the New Year ahead. Annually, the Chamber’s Board of Directors selects a new chairperson to lead the efforts.

The Corona Chamber of Commerce Chairman of the Board for 2019 is Mike Ryan, of Ryan & Associates Financial Services. Mike was officially inaugurated at the Installation and Awards Party on January 24. Each year, the Chairman, as a focal point for membership to rally around and promote, selects a theme. For 2019, Mike has selected, “Make a Difference, in Life and in Work,” as our theme.

ike and Mary Vasquez first came to Corona in 1969. In 1973, they opened the first Miguel’s Restaurant. Forty-five years later having built a durable enterprise, the Vasquezes have provided jobs, economic growth, and quality food for our region.

Their success is dependent upon using secret ingredients in their recipes, which date back generations and were created by Mary Vasquez’s family.

Named in honor of Mike’s grandfather, Miguel, in 1975, Mike and Mary leased a fast-food restaurant located two miles from the current Miguel’s and named it Miguel’s Jr. It was an immediate success. Since that time, 17 additional locations have opened throughout the Inland Empire, Orange County and beyond.

In 1997, Mike and Mary relocated the original Sixth Street Miguel’s Restaurant a few blocks to its current location. The new restaurant opened October 11, 2000. In the meantime, Orange County got its first taste of the Corona legend in the summer of 2004, with the opening of Miguel’s in Foothill Ranch. In September 2008, another “sit down” location opened at Dos Lagos. A beautiful building and location, Miguel’s Restaurant opened lakeside.

Mike and Mary Vasquez believe in giving back to the communities they serve. On the 40th anniversary of the restaurants, the Vasquez family donated $250,000 to the City of Corona to provide a splash park in Corona. They also made a generous donation which helped create the Teen Center at the Corona Public Library.

Mike and Mary Vasquez have become valuable assets to the communities they serve. Miguel’s can regularly be counted upon to help others while continuing to serve delicious fare, originated in Corona and beloved by our citizens.

Jim took a hobby and has developed it into a thriving and fast-paced business. Jim’s faithful clients include second and third generations of local families.

Where the less fortunate are concerned, Jim’s heart is pure in offering assistance. Throughout the years volunteering at the Corona Chamber, Jim is typically the first to volunteer his time, talent and treasures. Among his most prestigious jobs are photographing two Presidents of the United States.

Jim Dorsey loves what he does, and it shows. His calendar bookings cover most days from early mornings to late nights.

Jim’s decision from day one was that there would be no rules or limits (just don’t abuse the photographer!). He exhibits his good-natured humor in relaxing his clientele, who might get very nervous at important events. Jim’s patience and humor has turned the most stressful shoots into fun experiences. Photographing over 1800 weddings, there isn’t much he hasn’t seen or done.

Weddings are only part of his professional catalog.

He has provided photos of food, products, cars, homes, pets, small children, businesses, or anything that his customers require. His specialty has always been events. His clientele includes magazines, publications and some of the top Fortune 100 businesses. Jim treasures the title of “Official Photographer – Photographing the World.” He has worked for many local businesses, government staff, civic leaders and members of the Corona Police and Corona Fire Departments.

His work can also be found in corporate publications and beyond, from headshots to panoramas.

Jim’s background far extends beyond photography. His previous career started at Sears, where he rapidly climbed the ladder to management. His words of wisdom for networking, managing, and working with others can be traced back to those early years. The Corona Chamber has utilized Jim numerous times for assisting in training, speaking and of course, photographing your world!

J

ohn Tavaglione has served the Corona area and District 2 for Riverside County for 24 years. A native and lifelong resident of Riverside, whenever there was a need or task in Corona, he answered every call and never wavered. John provided consistency and dedication to his post, while working with numerous agencies and municipalities.

Elected to represent the Second Supervisorial District on November 7, 1994, John was sworn into office on January 3, 1995. During his tenure on the Board of Supervisors, John served as Chairman six times, most recently in 2017. He served a broad range of interests for his constituents. In 2017, he was also the Chairman of the Riverside County Transportation Commission (RCTC).

Supervisor Tavaglione has been a member of the Board of Directors and Executive Committee of the California State Association of Counties (CSAC) for the past 20 years, and was elected by California’s 58 counties in 2010-2011 to serve as President of the Association. In this capacity, he worked closely with Governor Jerry Brown and his administration in negotiating Public Safety and Health/Human Services Realignment.

Prior to his election to the Board of Supervisors, John served on the Riverside City Council and was a member of the Riverside Public Utilities Commission. His professional career spanned nearly 25 years as a commercial real estate executive. John received his Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from California Baptist University and is a proud U.S. Army Veteran (’68-’70).

John and his wife Jan have two children, Heidi and Chris, a daughter-in-law, Jennifer, granddaughters, Madelon Rose and Grace, and a grandson, William Christopher. John and Jan’s Riverside home includes their dogs Rosie and Ralphie. John’s hobbies consist of woodworking, singing and performing with his 60’s classic rock group, The Legendary Mustangs.

However, his favorite pastime is babysitting and spending time with his grandchildren.

John has led a remarkable life of dedicated public service. We will remain grateful for his uncompromising dedication and commitment to Riverside County. His tremendous record of public service might be equaled, but not surpassed. John Tavaglione will be missed in his role and fondly remembered.

Initially opening their retail store as Nancy’s Country Hearts, a neighborhood boutique, this establishment has brought the Brighton name to local fame. Nancy De Caprio and daughter Dana Clapp offer an array of gifts, home décor and other items from

Being located in the same center, when only Costco, McDonalds, Claim Jumper and then Albertsons were opening, Nancy took her idea and concept of providing quality products for an unknown clientele. Throughout the 28 years of doing business in Corona, they have focused on assisting numerous women-based organizations, as well mentoring hundreds of women and young ladies who have been employed there.

Known as the Mighty Docs, Citrus Valley Medical Associates, Inc. has been providing healthcare services for over 50 years. Founded by the late Dr. Lawrence Nelson, Citrus Valley Medical is a regional health facility. In 1964, Dr. Nelson returned home after medical school to start a family practice on Hamner Avenue in neighboring Norco. From those small beginnings he grew into a larger office with

multiple providers. Eventually Dr. Lawrence retired and was succeeded by his son Dr. Robert Nelson. Over the years since, Citrus Valley Medical Associates has taken shape. he role of a Corona Chamber Ambassador is to serve as a volunteer, representing the Chamber. They can be found greeting our members and guests, setting up for events, making phone calls to members, and serving wherever and whenever needed.

One ambassador receives the title of Ambassador of the Year for their outstanding service and dedication to the community. In 2018, we had many that went above and beyond the duties of an Ambassador, but one rose to the top. The 2018 Ambassador

of the Year is Juan Santos, Sales Manager for American Financial Network, based out of Ontario.

Juan has been a walking representation of our theme for 2018, “At Your Service”. He is the first to volunteer to serve and usually the last to leave. He enjoys training other ambassadors and truly enjoys meeting with business owners and identifying how the Chamber can help their business thrive.

Juan is a proud Veteran, and he and his wife Mayra are parents of two with another on the way, and live right in the heart of Corona. We are so proud to have him on the Corona Ambassador Team, serving the community with excellence.

hris Hernandez is originally from Queens, New York and was born into a blue collar family. His parents taught him hard work and gave him the confidence in becoming a leader. As a Madison Avenue Executive, Chris learned the value of people and how teams can make a difference in companies. Chris grew his division to 26 million in revenue, employing 1,500 workers across 4 states in a span of 9 years. He then transitioned his career after being acquired into becoming a National Sales Director for a boutique Time and Labor Software product based out of Corona, CA. Chris came to the City of Corona to help build tech companies, a tech scene, and partner with the Chamber and the City to help the region

avid Brambila has been making a difference in CORONA for years, and the Chamber is happy to recognize his contributions with this year’s Making a Difference Award. He has been the Parade Chairman for the Corona Cinco de Mayo Committee for the past seven years. This organization puts on an annual festival that has raised and awarded over $250,000 in scholarships to graduating CNUSD seniors.

For eight years, David served in the United States Marine Corps, followed by earning a B.A. in Business from California State University, Pomona. While still in college, he and his wife Venus opened a retail store in Corona. He took his experience

and entered the corporate world, rising to V.P. of Operations for an Orange County marketing firm.

Filled with entrepreneurial spirit, he again started his own businesses in Corona, Creative Marketing, a print communications firm, and Brambila Properties, a real estate brokerage.

David is also heavily involved in Veteran causes. He was elected to Finance Officer during his first meeting as a member of the Joe Dominguez American Legion Post 742. With David’s leadership, the Corona Chamber’s Executive Leadership Roundtable of 2017-18 and his fellow veterans worked to upgrade the 70-year-old Legion Hall with new floor tile and kitchen equipment. Over $90,000 in cash and services were donated to make this happen.

David and Venus have been married for 23 years and are the parents of two sons. David continues to expand his commitment to serving and was recently elected to 3rd Vice Commander of American Legion District 21. This District represents 19 American Legions in the Inland Empire and surrounding areas, representing over 4,500 Veterans.

David is a business and community leader, and he is here to serve his family and his community – For God and Country.

fter being chosen as a two-time member of the Corona Chamber’s 40 under 40, Kristen joined the Chamber’s Board of Directors in 2018. As with most things in life, Kristen made an immediate impact and jumped in to help. “Amazing!” is the way John Weyhgandt, 2018 Chairman of the Board, describes Kristen.

“Kristen is a servant and a leader. The first time I met Kristen, I immediately knew she is a person who gets things done. She has the perfect combination of ability, drive and heart.”

She is not only one of the region’s foremost family law attorneys at Holstrom, Block & Parke, but she is a mom, an advocate for business, and works with Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Inland Empire and is a member of the Barristers Club of Riverside. In 2017, she was recognized as a Super Lawyers Rising Star.

In addition to serving on several

committees including the golf tournament and membership development, Kristen was instrumental in starting a cross referral organization of attorneys known as the HUB. Her vitality and enthusiasm is infectious, and we are proud to have her on our team. The Corona Chamber is proud to honor Kristen Holstrom as this year’s Chairman’s Award winner.

Citizen of the Year DON KINDRED

CORONA SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA

D

on Kindred started the Corona Symphony Orchestra over 10 years ago. He was finishing his 42year career in the retail industry when his devotion to music inspired him to use his own resources to establish the Symphony Orchestra. Bringing outstanding musicians together from all over the region, Corona is a rare Southern California city with its own Symphony.

In February 2018, the City and Chamber received calls from the John F. Kennedy Center for Performing Arts, requesting Corona host its inaugural Arts Across America. Don was immediately contacted, and he helped organize seven events

presenting world-renowned cellist Yo-Yo Ma to local audiences. Organizers from the Kennedy Center were so enamored with Don that they extended their relationship, bringing him onto their team as an Ambassador.

Don’s music career started early, singing with the San Francisco Boys Chorus.

There he had the opportunity to tour and perform with the Vienna Boys Choir, sing on a number of television productions including the Ed Sullivan Show, and perform with the San Francisco Opera Company in La Boehme, Tosca and Carmen. Don continued his musical endeavors, playing string bass throughout his life in many bands,

As a young executive at Sears, he was assigned to be the personal shopper for the then First Lady of California, Nancy Reagan. Don says, “She would call me just about every day and place fairly large orders. She was very nice.” The two were on a

first name basis.

Don is a Northern California native, but his wife, Shelly, grew up in Corona.

He served in the Vietnam War as a sailor in the Navy and earned a B.A. in Political Science from Cal State Fullerton. In recent years, Don has acted in several television commercials.

Don has inspired many young people to play musical instruments. Impressively, he has succeeded in bringing orchestra programs back to students in the Corona-Norco Unified School District. The Chamber is proud to honor Don Kindred as the Corona Chamber’s 2018 Citizen of the Year, and appreciates his many contributions to the Circle City.

The City and Chamber work to bring awareness to the LA Port, where we are able to take groups of manufacturers interested in reviewing

Manufacturers’ Council has grown significantly and with renewed enthusiasm for manufacturing. This group is specifically designed for manufacturers to work with one another, share common challenges, and learn new programs and incentives that are available.

Manufacturing month is celebrated nationwide in October; however, Corona is focused on manufacturing 24/7.

Manufacturer’s Summit will take place on February 14th in Riverside, where many of our Corona-based businesses will showcase their products. Our efforts will continue throughout the year to work on federal and state regulations, as well as highlight the expansion of many businesses.

here’s a little secret you can use on Social Media that is so easy, people don’t believe it works. Facebook, Instagram and Google use this little secret in their algorithm, as it’s designed to bring you people that like what you share and are most likely to buy from you!

By employing it, you will get more engagement with your perfect client: your “people”. Your people will show up and expect to see your awesome content. Your people will show up to see if they can work with you.

Your people will get to know, like and trust you as the Expert in your industry and will think of you when they need your product or service.

This little secret does require a little effort, but it’s not as hard as it

“Corona’s goal has been to develop an Innovation Center that demonstrates the endless possibilities that can be achieved when great, local and regional minds come together under one roof and collaborate to achieve and grow a sustainable and healthy local economy,” said former Mayor of Corona, Karen Spiegel.

“This project has been many years

in the making, and it’s very exciting to see it coming to fruition,” said former Vice Mayor Eugene Montanez. “It is imperative to attract and grow higher paying tech jobs to Inland SoCal and bringing multiple groups together under one roof will be a great first step. The Corona Innovation Center is a win-win-win for everyone. Through this project, we have an opportunity to adaptively reuse a city-owned building that has been vacant for many years, create a collaborative and vibrant economic ecosystem for our community, and develop a skilled workforce for our local and regional employers.”

In the late 1990s, the U.S. economy made a fundamental shift from an economy driven by manufacturing to one driven by innovation. Almost overnight, this change transformed the field of community and economic development.

Our largest companies have embraced technology to improve their efficiencies, and need far fewer employees to reach those goals. Since 2000, more than 10M American manufacturing jobs became obsolete. Conversely, entrepreneurs and their young companies are now the source of all net new jobs, but they have also created churn, and have forced us to change our expectations for how, where, and for how long we work. As Mark Twain once said, “People are all for progress; it’s change they don’t like.”

The session will

help explain the process, enabling attendees to better understand these changes – both those that have happened, and that which is ahead. Our goal in hosting this program is to develop strategies to foster entrepreneurship, encourage innovation, and re-engage our area workforce. Collins gets this! She represents the economic development field, community leadership, higher education, and entrepreneurship. This course will easily be inclusive for the twentysomethings and boomers alike; collectively, Collins brings the wisdom of the old economy with the creative intellect of the new.
