This thesis is a proposal for a new zero energy ferry transit-hub in Redwood City. The architecture provides an access point for the people to the bay as well as bringing the South Bay and the broader Bay Area neighborhoods closer through the closely linked ferry services delivered. A highly efficient ferry service would ultimately alleviate the continually worsening Bay Area traffic congestion problem.

Sustainability is the main priority for BAST. BAST takes net-zero energy from the grid by harvesting solar energy through the photovoltaic arrays on the building’s roof and using it to operate its electric ferry fleet. The building uses a set of floating pontoon foundations as a solution to the threat of increasing flooding events as well as the sea level rise.

0.01: Project Abstract

Inhabitants of the Bay Area have the tremendous privilege of having access to its incredible natural resources, with the bay itself as one of the most important natural resources in the region. This thesis is a proposal for a new Bay Area Solar Transit-hub (BAST), a zero-energy ferry transit center in Redwood City that has both social and environmental benefits.

The innovative new architecture revitalizes the overlooked waterfront of Redwood City by providing services and spaces for people to come and enjoy the beautiful setting on the water’s edge. It provides an access point for the people to the bay and to other communities beyond by bringing the South Bay and the broader Bay Area neighborhoods closer through sustainable clean-energy ferry services. The ferry service ultimately alleviates the notorious Bay Area traffic congestion issue.

BAST is a prototype for a sustainable waterway public transit system network that can be expanded throughout the Bay Area and other cities around the world that need effective waterway networks. The building emphasizes key sustainability aspects of architecture at the present time and the near future, including renewable energy and adaptive architecture for the climate crisis. 1.0: Thesis Research & Preliminary Design

1.01 Concept Statement Connecting the Bay and its people The Bay Area, as the name suggests, is known for the beautiful scenery of its natural environment provided by the surrounding bay as well as its unique urban character. The Bay has been strictly regulated and protected since the 1970s as it is recognized as one of the most ecologically important habitats in California where it supports a number of endangered species. However, does the Bay share similar intimate relationship with its people? Many communities are disconnected from the Bay, as it is often inaccessible due to a physical barriers such as freeways or other infrastructure where public access is limited. A close relationship between communities and the Bay is vital for the restoration/protection of the Bay to be successful and sustainable. What can be done to reconnect the Bay and its people?

Congested grid With the Bay Area’s continued economic growth and the popularity among city dwellers, its population has been steadily growing. Combined with the natural geological condition of the Bay, i.e. dependency on bridges, the challenges the Bay Area’s transit system faces have been growing and becoming a big issue.

In the late 1800s, the Bay’s transit systems at the time played a large role. It was served by various ferry routes, some of which were even linking railroad systems across the Bay. The importance of the ferries declined rapidly with the completion of the Golden Gate Bridge and the Bay Bridge. Is there something to be learned from the past? The Bay Area’s current commuter traffic condition ranks as one of the worst in the nation. Can the Bay provide some relief to the Bay Area’s problematic transit condition?

Sustainability at its core The future of architecture must include sustainability as its core design element. Deploying sustainable green energy for this project should be a must-have not a nice-to-have. Since the project is about the Bay and its water, the architecture must have a solution to the increasing threat of the climate crisis, especially the sea level rise.

1.02 User Group Narratives Group I : Commuters using ferry services.

Overall, the majority (about 70 percent) of the riders are between 25 and 54 years of age. The majority of this group are employees of tech companies located in the area known as Silicon Valley. This results in the ferry rider user group having a non-standard income distribution, as 45% of the ferry riders have an annual household income of more than $150,000.

Group II : The residents of Redwood City and neighboring cities One of the proposed ferry terminal’s primary goals is to provide an access point to the Bay for the people of the nearby neighborhoods. The new pedestrian trails and transit transportation would make it easier for the residents of Redwood City and the broader area to reach the water’s edge for either travel purposes or recreational purposes.

Group III: Bay Trail Users The terminal invites the Bay Trail users to make a stop or visit it as their final destination. The program includes a Bay Trail information center as well as a bycicle service/storage center. The cafes/restaurants also welcome the Bay Trail users as well as the general public

Case Study Yokohama international ferry terminal Foreign Office Architects (FOA) Yokohama, Japan 2002 The Terminal is integrated as part of the landscape of the city’s harbor that serves as a public space in addition to its core function; an international ferry terminal.

The long span arched steel structure enables column-free wide open space. Undulating surfaces combined with various uses of ramp enables a seamless transition between the interior and the exterior space.

The circulation system consists of a series of interlocking paths instead of isolated routes found in a typical termial settings.

The open and flexible terminal floor works as coverd public space and is used for various purposes, such as events and public gatherings which draw the public to visit the terminal even though they have no intention to use the ferry service.

The terminal successfully extends the city fabric onto the city’s harbor, bringing the people out to the waterfront and encourages then to engage with its physical environment of a terminal as well as the natural surrounding of the harbor.

Case Study vC. F. Møller Architects Stockholm, Sweden 2016

The new terminal for Stockholm’s permanent ferry connections to Finland and the Baltics recalls the shape of a moving vessel and the architecture - with large cranes and warehouses - that previously characterized the ports.

The main idea has been to create natural links between central Stockholm and the new urban area in connection with the terminal, so that city life will naturally flow into the area. Therefore the terminal is raised to be at level with the urban zone, so it is easy for both pedestrians and traffic to access. At the same time the roof of the terminal building is designed as a varied green landscape with stairs, ramps, niches, and cosy corners, inviting both Stockholmers and passengers for a stroll or relaxing moments, while enjoying the view of the ferries, the archipelago, and the city skyline.

Case Study Leixões Ferry Terminal Luís Pedro Silva Arquitecto Matosinhos, Portugal 2015

Porto Cruise Terminal is a small port complex, an initiative of the Administração dos Portos do Douro e Leixões, located at the South jetty in Matosinhos, Portugal. The strategic definition of a new cruise terminal had a double objective: improvement of the commercial efficiency and a better urban integration. That’s why the project integrates new buildings, berthing work and exterior spaces of public vocation. The main building shelters several programmatic components: cruise ship terminal, marina facilities, the Science and Technology Park of the Sea of the University of Porto, event rooms and a restaurant.

Case Study WMS Boat House at Clark Park Studio Gang Chicago, Ilinois 2013 The boathouse provide a key public access point along the river’s edge, which led to the larger movement toward an ecological and recreational revival of the Chicago River.

The design of the Eleanor Boathouse translates the motion of rowing, using two truss shapes to create a rhythmic roof form.

In addition to highlighting the need for the continued revitalization of the river, the new facility—which also includes spaces for after-school mentoring and community events— allows for the expansion of these programs, extending their opportunities to people, and especially youth, on the South Side and across the city.

Eleanor Boat House at Park 571 Studio Gang Chicago, Ilinois 2016 Its alternating roof trusses were generated from studying this motion while creating functional south-facing clerestory windows that bring in sunlight to warm the boat storage facility in colder months using minimal energy.

While congestion only generates a few minutes of delay for the average commuter, commuters in a handful of high-demand corridors experience far worse conditions. The top ten most congested segments constitute nearly half of all regional freeway congestion, with just the top two segments along the Bay Bridge corridor constituting 16 percent all Bay Area traffic congestion.

While congestion on other corridors in the region mirrors typical commute patterns, the Bay Bridge is affected by congestion for long periods throughout the day.

Current Ferry Operators in San Francisco Bay San Francisco Bay Ferry San Francisco Bay Ferry is a service of the Water Emergency Transportation Authority (WETA) and is a non-profit organization. SF Bay Ferry carries over 2.8 million passengers annually utilizing a fleet of 14 high speed passenger-only ferry vessels SF Bay Ferry provides ferry services to Alameda Main Street, Harbor Bay, Oakland Jack London Square, Vallejo, San Francisco Ferry Building, Pier 41/Fisherman’s Wharf, and South San Francisco, along with seasonal service to Oracle Park.

Golden Gate Ferry Golden Gate Ferry is run by a government agency, Golden Gate Bridge Highway & Transporation District.

Golden Gate Ferry (GGF) operates frequent ferry service between San Francisco and Larkspur in central Marin County, and between San Francisco and Sausalito and Tiburon in southern Marin County. Ferries depart from behind the center of the Ferry Building to Sausalito and Larkspur. Extra service is also offered from Larkspur to AT&T Park for Giants home games and other sporting and music events.

Blue & Gold Fleet Blue & Gold Fleet is a privately owned company and is the largest among the three ferry operators in SF Bay. It provides bay cruise and excursion services in San Francisco Bay as well as ferry services to Angel Island, Tiburon, Sausalito and Pier 41 (adjacent to Pier 39) and the popular Rocket Boat attraction.

Ridership Statistics While there are more transportation alternatives than ever before, today’s congestion is worse than what was experienced during previous economic booms. More commuters are adopting the ferry services for their commute even though the services are limited to relatively small percentage of riders accross the Bay Area. The annual riderships for the ferry services over the San Francisco Bay has risen steadily since 2010.

Not all of the bay is navigable to large ships. Some regions, such as the area between Richmond and Emeryville, are much too shallow for deep draft ships to passâ&#x20AC;&#x201D; as little as one meter in some places. Only boats over 60ft in length are required by law to transmit AIS telemetry data, so many smaller boats do not appear on this map.

Bay Ship Traffic over 24 hours Inside the Golden Gate, vessel traffic of all sizes zips from shore to shore. High speed ferries make regular crossings from San Francisco to destinations in Marin County and the East Bay. Tourist ferries shuttle sightseers to Alcatraz Island or underneath the Golden Gate Bridge. Big ships generally move along predictable routes travelling counter-clockwise around Alcatraz. No matter what happens, smaller boats must yield right of way to the big ships as they have limited maneuverability in close quarters.

Alluvial Fans and Alluvial Plains Alluvial fans and alluvial plains are the areas built up over thousands of millennia with sand and gravel eroded from the Coast Range hills and deposited on the floor of the valley thatcurrently contains San Francisco Bay. Threats from Sea level Rise / Flood

The selected site near the port of Redwood City offers a good opportunity to demonstrate how architecture can connect people and the Bay as well as serving as a water transportation hub linking the South Bay and the other neighborhoods through the ferry service in the Bay.

It is neccesarry to consider threats from sea level rise and flooding as the site is in a risk zone for both. The design of Ferry terminal should respond to those risks.

Why Redwood City?

Firstly, the waterâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s edge adjacent to Redwood City has an amazing natural environment and public space. Yet, limited access due to the highway 101 and industrial activities alongside 101 discourage people from coming to the waterâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s edge.

Ecology around the site The terminal will bring in ferry services and people close to Bair Island which is a protected natural habitat. The design of the terminal should consider the importance of respecting the precious wildlife habitiats surrouding it as well as encourage its users to understand its importance.

Secondly, there is an already available water way for the ferries to operate thanks to the port of Redwood City located near the site.
