Reed-Vitalization
YEAR 2 SPRING | BOLSA CHICA ECOLOGICAL RESERVE
The objective of this project was to create a performative modular panel to serve a nearby LA wetland ecology. The Reed-Vitalization panel, made with Grasshopper, achieves performance through high tech and low tech methods. (High tech = use of titanium dioxide in concrete to purify the air; low tech = static reeds to diffuse air and create lighting effects.)
Structures designed to utilize the panel benefit from the ability to connect inhabitants to the environment. The panel and its applications aim to have positive/neutral environmental impacts.

Artist Dwelling
The artist dwelling utlizes the panel to create a living quarters with studio, bedroom, and bathroom spaces. The structure expands upon ideas of passive design by raising the structure to cool it from below. Sliding glass allows the building to be hermetically sealed when needed but open to ventilation at the inhabitant’s choice.

Community Center
The project imagines an artist-in-residence program with twelve artists each in their own Artist Dwelling comprising studio and bedroom. The Community Center connects the twelve dwellings, with a caretaker that cooks meals. The center also includes a library, game room, and movie room.

Urban Rainforest
YEAR 2 FALL | SAN FERNANDO VALLEY
The term “urban jungle” is associated with a city’s reputation as a chaotic and harrowing place. Densifying LA suburbia (Reyner Banham’s “Plains of Id”) has the potential to urbanize the region to the point of dystopia, so how do we keep a superfuturistic project from reaching too far beyond its bounds? The Urban Rainforest aims to maintain a sense of friendliness while densifying significantly.
The redesigned Plains of Id ecology replaces a square mile in the San Fernando Valley. The proposal below shows the entire square mile group proposal, with the highlighted portion being my sector. My sector of the proposal has a programmatic focus on the arts.

Branch Library with Fabrication Lab
YEAR 1 SPRING | LITTLE TOKYO/ARTS DISTRICT
Inspired by libraries in Los Angeles and San Diego, this branch library includes a fabrication lab, as well as my own concept for a children’s maker space. Features of the project include use of Grasshopper for shelled facade generation and a “playful industrial” style reminiscent of the Centre Pompidou to complement the programming.

Bricks and Bonds
YEAR 3 FALL | INGLEWOOD
Bricks and Bonds intends to foster a co-living community that creates community bonds by employing principles of humanistic design. Following design principles observed in the works of Ralph Erskine and Alison Brooks, the project focuses on sculptural qualities, familiar forms, and material tactility as a basis for creating design appealing to the human scale. A courtyard scheme makes use of the tried and true method for creating public space. Terracing of the massing opens up a large amount of square footage for public interaction. Wood and brick are employed to give the building a tactility and sense of comfort in the natural and historically familiar. Sculptural qualities of the facade and massing make the building more engaging to the public eye, drawing people into the open spaces and public amenities.
