Welcome to our 51st Annual Total Performance Production sale! We appreciate your interest in our program and look forward to sharing this tremendous set of bulls and heifers with you.
Our Total Performance philosophy means that we think it’s critical that cattle perform well in all areas. The ultimate goal is for our commercial cow-calf customers to be consistently profitable. For that to happen, the bulls need to sire growthy calves with eye appeal, and they need to leave behind functional, fertile, problem-free females. Everything we do has this objective in mind. Based on customer feedback, we’ve started utilizing larger sire groups. (You can see progress in this area in this sale, and it will be even more pronounced in next year’s.) The select few sires we use are critical to success, and I spend a lot of time researching and evaluating them; it’s one of my hobbies (my wife might say obsessions.) In sire selection, great phenotype is a must because we know cattle are still bought by people, and people like to look at and buy good cattle! Numerically, if a bull is toward the bottom of the breed in any single trait that is a driver of cow-calf profitability, I won’t use him. Even though that bull could sometimes be mated to just the right cow and hit a home run, when spread across the volume of cows we are breeding to, those problems are bound to pop up. Additionally, as a seedstock provider, I believe it’s our job to keep you out of the ditches. When you’re selecting bulls, you shouldn’t have to pull up a bull’s registration page and look up all 27 of his EPDs and 6 indexes to see what his flaws are. We want you to have the
confidence that we are providing bulls that exhibit Total Performance in all important areas and have no significant holes.
Culling is the next method we use to ensure our customers are getting quality. We cull early and often on both the bull and the female side. We offer an unusually low percentage of our calf crop as bulls. We’re fortunate to have a very long-term time horizon so we can take some short-term financial hits-like castrating more of the male calves-because we believe it will pay off in the long run by only selling top quality. At Wagonhammer, it is an achievement for a bull to make the sale, not an expectation.
“What gets measured gets improved” is a classic quote. We strongly believe in the power of data and spend countless hours collecting and submitting data to the breed associations. Here is a list of the data we have been submitting: calving ease, birth weight, weaning weight, yearling weight, yearling height, scrotal circumference, docility, carcass ultrasound, heifer pregnancy records, entire cow herd inventory reports, teat size, udder suspension, and mature cow weight. We have large, meaningful contemporary groups and report with 100% honesty. We also genomic test every bull and replacement heifer. The beauty of genomics is it allows us to see how the genes were actually inherited, not just an estimated parental average. When the thousands of data records we submit are combined with millions of records from other herds and with genomics, we get genomicenhanced EPDs that have incredible accuracy. Not perfect, of course, but pretty darn good.

Back to the ultimate goal of cow-calf profitability, here is a snapshot of what our Angus bulls have to offer in the traits we deem most important to ranchers. These numbers represent the median in each trait. In other words, for each trait listed, half of the bulls in our sale have higher numbers than what is listed, and half of the bulls have lower numbers. We’re proud that our median bull is around the top 1/3 of the breed in every major category. There are two Angus indexes that predict cow-calf profitability: maternal weaned calf value ($M) and weaned calf value ($W.) See the selection tools glossary on page 2 for all the traits included in those indexes. FL-functional longevity-is a new EPD that predicts the number of calves a sire’s daughter is expected to produce by 6 years of age compared to other sires. Our median bull in the sale is in the top 25% of the breed for WW, the top 35% for FL, the top 29% for $M, and the top 20% of the breed for $W!
Please reach out if you’d like to talk about the cattle, and thank you for your interest in our program.

Sincerely,

Expected Progeny Difference (EPD), is the prediction of how future progeny of each animal are expected to perform relative to the progeny of other animals listed in the database. EPDs are expressed in units of measure for the trait, plus or minus. Interim EPDs may appear on young animals when their performance has yet to be incorporated into the American Angus Association National Cattle Evaluation (NCE) procedures. This EPD will be preceded by an “I”, and may or may not include the animal’s own performance record for a particular trait, depending on its availability, appropriate contemporary grouping, or data edits needed for NCE.
Accuracy (ACC), is the reliability that can be placed on the EPD. Accuracy will range from 0 to 1 with an accuracy closer to 1.0 indicating higher reliability. Accuracy is impacted by the amount of information that is included in the analysis including individual genotype and performance records as well as number of progeny and ancestral records.
Calving Ease Direct (CED), expressed as a difference in percentage of unassisted births, with a higher value indicating greater calving ease in first-calf heifers. It predicts the average difference in ease with which a sire’s calves will be born when he is bred to first-calf heifers.
Birth Weight (BW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit birth weight to his progeny compared to that of other sires.
Weaning Weight (WW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit weaning growth to his progeny compared to that of other sires.
Yearling Weight (YW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit yearling growth to his progeny compared to that of other sires.
Residual Average Daily Gain (RADG), feed efficiency expressed in pounds per day, is a predictor of a sire’s genetic ability for post-weaning gain in future progeny compared to that of other sires, given a constant amount of feed consumed.
Dry Matter Intake (DMI), expressed in pounds per day, is a predictor of difference in transmitting ability for feed intake during the post-weaning phase, compared to that of other sires.
Yearling Height (YH), expressed in inches, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit yearling height compared to that of other sires.
Scrotal Circumference (SC), expressed in centimeters, is a predictor of the difference in transmitting scrotal size compared to that of other sires.
MANAGEMENT
Claw Set (Claw), expressed in units of claw-set score, a lower EPD is more favorable, indicating a sire will produce progeny with more symmetrical, even and appropriately spaced toes compared to another sire.
Foot Angle (Angle), expressed in units of foot-angle score, a lower EPD is more favorable, indicating a sire will produce progeny with an angle closer to 45 degrees at the pastern and appropriate toe length and heel depth compared to another sire.
Docility (DOC), expressed as a difference in yearling cattle temperament, with a higher value indicating more favorable docility in a sire’s offspring compared to another sire.
Pulmonary Arterial Pressure EPD (PAP), expressed in millimeters of Mercury (mmHg), with a lower EPD being more favorable indicating a sire should produce progeny with a lower PAP score to decrease the risk of progeny contracting high altitude disease most commonly experienced at 5,500 ft or greater in elevation.
Hair Shed EPD (HS), expressed in units of hair shed score, with a lower EPD being more favorable. This indicates a sire should produce progeny who shed their winter coat earlier in the spring and has improved environmental adaptability in heat stressed areas and grazing endophyte-infected (hot) fescue.
MATERNAL
Heifer Pregnancy (HP), is a selection tool to increase the probability or chance of a sire’s daughters becoming pregnant as first–calf heifers during a normal breeding season. A higher EPD is the more favorable direction, and the EPD is reported in percentage units.
Calving Ease Maternal (CEM), expressed as a difference in percentage of unassisted births, with a higher value indicating greater calving ease in first-calf daughters. It predicts the average ease with which a sire’s daughters will calve as first-calf heifers when compared to daughters of other sires.
Maternal Milk (Milk), expressed in pounds of calf weaned, is a predictor of a sire’s genetic merit for milk and mothering ability in his daughters. In other words, it is the part of the calf’s weaning weight attributes to milk and mothering ability.
Mature Weight (MW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of the difference in mature weight of daughters of a sire compared to the daughters of other sires.
Mature Height (MH), expressed in inches, is a predictor of the difference in mature height of a sire’s daughters compared to daughters of other sires.
CARCASS
Carcass Weight (CW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of the differences in hot carcass weight of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires.
Marbling (Marb), expressed as a fraction of the difference in USDA marbling score of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires.
Ribeye Area (RE), expressed in square inches, is a predictor of the difference in ribeye area of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires.
Fat Thickness EPD (Fat), expressed in inches, is a predictor of the differences in external fat thickness at the 12th rib (as measured between the 12th and 13th ribs) of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires.
$Value Indexes, expressed in dollars per head, are multi-trait selection indexes where a higher value suggests more profit. The $Value is an estimate of how future progeny of each sire are expected to perform, on average, compared to progeny of other sires if sires were randomly mated to cows and if calves were exposed to the same environment.
Maternal Weaned Calf Value ($M), expressed in dollars per head, predicts profitability differences in progeny due to genetics from conception to weaning by decreasing mature cow size and improving docility, foot structure and fertility while maintaining weaning weights consistent with today’s production.
Weaned Calf Value ($W), expressed in dollars per head, provides the expected difference in future progeny pre-weaning performance from birth to weaning.
Energy Value ($EN), expressed in dollar savings per cow per year with a larger value being more favorable. It assesses differences in cow energy requirements, due to maternal milk and mature cow size.
Feedlot Value ($F), expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for post-weaning feedlot merit (growth and feed efficiency) compared to progeny of other sires assuming producers retain ownership of cattle through the feedlot phase and sell on a carcass-weight basis.
Grid Value ($G), expressed in dollars per carcass, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for carcass grid merit, including quality and yield grade attributes, compared to progeny of other sires.
Beef Value ($B), expressed in dollars per carcass, represents the expected average differences in the progeny post-weaning performance and carcass value compared to progeny of other sires. This index assumes commercial producers wean all male and female progeny, retain ownership of these animals through the feedlot and sell on a carcass merit grid.
Combined Value ($C), expressed in dollars per head, which includes all traits that make up both Maternal Weaned Calf Value ($M) and Beef Value ($B) with the objective that commercial producers will replace 20% of their breeding females per year with replacement heifers retained within their own herd. The remaining cull heifer and steer progeny are then assumed to be sent to the feedlot where the producers retain ownership of those cattle and sell them on a quality-based carcass merit grid.
Fellow Ranchers,
It is my pleasure to give you a little background on the development of the 2026 Wagonhammer offering. These bulls have been developed with their future in mind, and with an eye toward giving you the most return for your genetics investment.

All of the bulls were started on feed slowly, stepped through a series of rations to ensure digestive and hoof health, and limited to less than 30% starch in the bull grower ration. This set of bulls have been sorted on constantly, culled ruthlessly, and developed cautiously. The aged bulls grazed summer range last summer and were grown this winter in a large test lot with plenty of room, not in a typical feedlot setting. By sale day, all of the bulls will be turned out on pasture and meadow to travel and exercise for their long-term soundness.
The Wagonhammer and Great Plains crews take bull selection and development seriously; and we all expect these bulls to work hard in the upcoming breeding season. As always, we welcome your feedback and appreciate your support. Please feel free to reach out with any questions you have about the development process.
Thank you,
Jeremy Martin, Ph.D. Great Plains Livestock Consulting, Inc.

to help understand our recommendations on how each bull can be used based off their EPDs, actual performance, dam’s production record and pedigree history.
HHHHH 5 STAR CALVING EASE
No doubt heifer bull. He was born light and unassisted. His EPDs are elite for calving ease. His sire, dam and maternal grandsire have a history of calving ease.
HHHH 4 STAR CALVING EASE
EPDs for CED and BW suggest he should work well on heifers. Born with moderate birth weight and born unassisted. Pedigree has history of calving ease.
HHH 3 STAR CALVING EASE
EPDs for CED and BW suggest calving ease. Born with either heavier actual weight unassisted or smaller actual weight with abnormal presentation. Can be used on heifers with caution especially that are more developed prior to first calving (weighting 1150+). These bulls will fit well to breed wet two year olds. Pedigree has calving history.
Angus Bulls without highlighted calving ease – bulls that aren’t highlighted for calving ease will have typical Angus characteristics for easy calving but their numerical indicators and history tell us that they will work best on cows to maximize growth.

The American Angus Association and Certified Angus Beef have launched a program to recognize bulls with the genetic potential to expand the supply of CAB beef in the marketplace.

Note on weights – Birth weights on embryo transfer animals are not meaningful because the ET process leads to larger weights. We are printing ET to the right of the birth weight for ET animals.”. WW and YW EPDs are comparable between programs, but actual/ adjusted weaning and yearling weights are not due to management and reporting differences. Birth weights and weaning weights are not even comparable between our spring and fall herds because of the environment and forage availability being so much different. Fall weights are consistently lighter.

We firmly believe WAGR Patriot 1008J (ASA# 3961833) is the best Simmental bull in the breed and one of the very best animals to ever walk the Wagonhammer Ranch. Due to using him so hard over the last 4 years and having countless daughters in our herd, we have to diversify our gene pool so we are offering him to the public. Patriot’s impeccable phenotype and herd bull presence captivate everyone who sees him, and he has had remarkable consistency in breeding the same into his progeny. His EPDs have only gotten better as more progeny data has been turned in. He is in the top 1% of the breed for WW and REA, 2% for YW, and 4% for TI. We will have 23 of his sons in our production sale (yes, 23!), and as good as his sons are, his daughters are even better. We truly believe he has the potential to become the most heavily used sire in the breed. We’re selling full possession and 2/3 semen interest in him. (Wager Cattle Co. is retaining 1/3 semen interest.)

There is no bull who epitomizes Total Performance and the direction our program is going better than Architect. He does it all and is THE leading proven sire in the breed for the metrics that determine cow-calf profitability. He transmits muscle, capacity, fleshing-ability, and top-of-the breed performance to his progeny. His dam comes from 5 generations of very productive, great uddered cows. She has raised 7 calves at an average weaning ratio of 118. Architect’s performance is real, as has been proven here and in top herds around the country. His top 5% of the breed weaning EPD has 95% accuracy with about 4,000 progeny records backing it up. Remarkably, his mature size is slightly lower than breed average, leading to cows with lower energy and feed requirements who we expect to breed back easier and stay in the herd longer.

Rito Lady 0622
High Road is a curve-bending calving ease sire whose progeny grow extremely well and make it to the top quarter of the breed for growth at yearling. His dam is the iconic HA Rito Lady 3839, who is also the dam of Thedford, Bar None, and the grand-dam of RiseAbove. He has a lot of rib shape and body and stands square at the ground with good feet. He adds mass and breed character.

WAR Benchmark K322 is a home-raised sire who has lived up to our high expectations for him and more. His Pathfinder dam, WAR In Focus X224, raised 10 natural calves at a 104 ratio, and she probably has more influence in our gene pool than any other cow. Her descendants are too many to list, as they have been productive cows who have multiplied. In addition to being the dam of this sire, she is also the cow that WAR Currency goes back to, and she is the great-granddam of WAR Architect N190 (Lot 67), one of the top candidates to start the sale with this year. When Jeremy Martin, our nutritionist, was riding through summer pastures with us, he stopped and said “Whoa, who’s that bull?” when he saw Benchmark. He’s transmitted that look to his progeny and offers a very balanced, complete data set with proven performance. His indexes for cow-calf profitability put him in the top 20% and 25% of the breed.

Currency is a calving-ease sire who offers the masculinity, natural thickness, rib shape, and depth that aren’t normally offered in a calving-ease package. When ranchers come to our place, their eyes are consistently drawn to the Currency progeny, and they have been among our top sellers. He is in the top 10% of the breed for maternal weaned calf value (profitability.) The fertility, productivity, teat and udder quality, and longevity in his maternal lineage is unmatched.

When it comes to explosive growth from a calving ease sire, no bull can match Dynamic. He sires overpowering physical presence with base width, thickness, and dimension in an eye-appealing package. His spread from birth to weaning and yearling looks too good to be true, but we have had enough progeny to know that it is real. Due to his popularity and the thousands of records that have been submitted, his EPD accuracies are over 90%. Dynamic also adds marbling, and his daughters have ideal teat size and udder suspension.

Imprint has been a great addition to our program. He’s a long, deep bodied bull with a lot of rib capacity. His progeny have been good performers. His son, Lot 132, who had a 128 weaning ratio among 128 contemporaries, is one of the top candidates to start the sale. He also sired the top weaning weight heifer at Pilakowski Angus in the western Sandhills. Calving Ease HHH – This stud has been a standout since birth, commanding a 135 weaning ratio and 121 yearling ratio among progeny of 1st calf heifers. He is just “built different” and has true herd bull presence, scrotal circumference, and dimension. Lot 1’s dam has a fabulous Architect bull calf for her 2nd calf so look for him next year. His maternal granddam E560 is a donor and maternal sister to WAR Cavalry, the popular ORIgen sire we raised. Remarkably, even though Cavalry was born 12 years ago, he is still in the top 4% of the breed for YW EPD and $Beef. E560 is also the granddam of featured spring bull Lot 133. Monster ratioing bull with 129 and 119 weaning and yearling ratios and the 3rd Top WW & YW in the fall bulls. His growth EPDs confirm he is one of the breed’s elite. He comes from a line of old, productive cows and consequently is in the top 10% of the breed for functional longevity (the number of calves a sire’s daughter is expected to produce by 6 years of age compared to other sires.) His great-granddam was a Pathfinder who weaned 12 calves at a 104 ratio. Since top-end growth and cow longevity are generally antagonistic, his combination of the two is special.

Calving Ease HHHHH – Big spread calving ease bull with a strong top and attractive profile. This bull has a near-ideal growth curve-he is in the lightest 15% of the breed for birth weight, heaviest 15% for weaning weight, and has lower than breed-average mature weight and cow energy requirements.

SHOW STOPPER! This bull is just flat, stop-you-in-your-tracks, good looking. He’s built incredibly thick with a deep chest floor and a big hip. He has impeccable feet, structure and flexibility. He knows how elite he is and is always posing with his head held high. His Upgrade-sired granddam was a donor who raised 9 natural calves at a 107 average weaning ratio. Numerically, he has a very complete data profile. His indexes are deceiving because marbling has such an outsized influence on $B and $C. In the real world, this bull will make you money through siring sons and replacement heifers that top the market.

High performance bull. He ranks near the top of the breed for Maternal Weaned Calf Value and Weaned Calf Value and then adds top marbling and terminal index figures on top of that. His dam has weaned 4 calves at a 107 ratio.

Thick made bull with a lot of rib shape and dimension. He excels at weaning with a 110 ratio and top quartile of the breed EPD. The long-lasting cows in his pedigree and his EPDs point toward him being an excellent female maker. He has strong marks across the board including heifer pregnancy, functional longevity, teat, udder, and claw.

Calving Ease HHHH – This bull excels in the areas that make cow-calf producers profitable, as shown by his $M and $W figures. He was a real standout at weaning time with a 119 ratio. His productive dam has raised 5 calves at an average weaning
of 106. Another great cow-maker.

Calving Ease HHHH – Pathfinder WAR In Focus X224 probably has more influence in our gene pool than any other cow. Her descendants are too many to list so here are a few highlights: She is the dam of WAR Benchmark K322, the great-granddam of WAR Currency, and the great-granddam of Lot 67. Lot 20 has her in his pedigree twice. He was a high ratioing bull, and he’s sure to leave fertile, long-lasting daughters.

Calving Ease HHHHH – Moderate framed meat wagon. This bull packs a lot of body and rib into his stature. He is a calving ease bull who doesn’t “look” like a calving ease bull. The cows in his pedigree have less mature weight and energy requirements than most, even though they’re strong milkers.

Elite in the breed for Maternal Weaned Calf Value ($M), we expect him to sire top-notch replacement females. He had a 105 yearling ratio and is in the

Grassland cattle are known for their superior phenotype, and this bull does not disappoint. He ratioed 109 and 111 at weaning and yearling and is towards the top of the breed for those traits. He also excels in docility, claw set, and ribeye area. His dam has been very productive, weaning 6 calves at an average ratio of 108.

Calving Ease HHH – This bull has a near-identical pedigree to our 2023 top selling bull, WAR Sandhills. He is maternally oriented, with good growth through weaning and superior fertility and longevity in the proven dams in his pedigree and his genetic predictions. This vaults him to the top 2% of the breed for $M.

Calving Ease HHH – This stretchy, natural son of the great Y285 cow (granddam of Lot 13) has high quality maternal and terminal attributes. She raised him as a 13-year-old cow. Not surprisingly, his heifer pregnancy and functional longevity EPDs are excellent. He also is over 1 for marbling.

Stout-made bull who covers all the bases. We expect him to sire females that are low maintenance and stay in the herd a long time (top 10% of the breed for functional longevity) and steers that perform very well in the feedlot.

Calving Ease HHHHH – Very high caliber individual. He combines an impressive, heavy muscled physique with an outstanding set of numbers-almost every trait is in the top 1/3 of the breed! His granddam is the E241 donor who has 10 progeny in the sale. He is safe for heifers to boot.

Calving Ease HHH – Stout made, strong topped, and big ribbed, this bull has been a high performer through weaning, yearling, and beyond. The dams in his pedigree have exceptional teat and udder quality.

This coming 2-year-old bull has been a standout for a long time. He’s stout featured and muscular with excellent structure. He’s cocky and a bit nervous. There are no docility issues in his pedigree so we chalk it up to being a virgin 2-year old bull with a lot of testosterone. He should be fine going to the right home once he gets worn out a bit. He has one of the more complete set of EPDs in the sale, including being in the top 2% of the breed for $F and 10% for $C. His Black Granite dam is one of the best cows on the ranch, having raised 6 calves at an average weaning ratio of 109.

Calving Ease HHHH – He had a 115 WW ratio and a 113 YW ratio, and his EPDs project his progeny to have top-end growth also. He adds in a lot of ribeye and a complete data profile.
Here’s a bull with top-of the breed numbers across the board. His granddam is a beautiful, massive-ribbed 9 year-old cow who we featured on Facebook while she was on pasture last summer.

His teat size, udder suspension, and functional longevity EPDs are in the top 4%, 10%, and 15% of the breed, respectively.

Very complete bull who does just about everything well and will keep you out of the ditches with problem-free progeny. Note his

Connealy Way Maker

Speaking of rock solid, take a look at this bull! He’s built like a brick. His Upgrade-sired dam raised him at 12 years old and did a heck of a job, weaning him off at a 105 ratio. He is elite for maternal weaned calf value and is a true Wagonhammer Total Performance bull. We recommend him with the utmost confidence.

This husky bull had 104 and 110 weaning and yearling ratios. His maternal granddam was the Pathfinder S A V Brilliance-sired B181.

Calving Ease HHHH – Starting off the spring division with a bang, he comes from one of our most promising young cows (a Gulfstream daughter out of our legendary Upgrade X280 donor.) I took the accompanying picture of her shortly after Lot 55 was born. He had explosive growth to weaning and achieved a 109 weaning ratio. He exhibits Total Performance, where he excels in almost every trait and is very difficult to fault. He achieves rare air with his claw and angle EPDs, in addition to his $M and $W figures. His marbling and $C numbers are pretty darn good, too.

He’s one of only two Angus cattle in the sale (Lot 42 out of Grassland’s dam being the other one) who is out of a cow we didn’t raise. We purchased her as one of the elite heifer calves at the Connealy Angus sale. Lot 62 is very complete and has elite numbers for WW, YW, claw, angle, ribeye area, and $W.

Here’s a stud that is one of the top candidates to start the sale. He is off the charts for performance, and from looking at him, you could never guess that he is a young April 1st born calf. He is the #1 ratioing bull for both weaning and yearling. For weaning, he had 128 contemporaries (bull calves out of mature cows) and was remarkably able to ratio 128 in that group. Then many bulls were cut so the yearling contemporary group only contained the high caliber bulls that made the sale. He was still able to ratio 123 in that group. When I received the genomic results back, I was excited to see that the genomics recognized his greatness. He has the top YW EPD in the sale and is top 2% of the breed for WW EPD also. When I made the picture list at the beginning of January, I had this bull on the list and then removed him because I thought there were too many Patriot sons on the picture list. That was a mistake. He went on to have the top yearling weight in the spring bull division. Look for his video because I promise you won’t be disappointed-he is a good looking rascal! He has top 10% of the breed performance numbers. I love his pedigree, too, as The Judge was the best Simmental sire we had used before Patriot, and his Pathfinder granddam WAR In Focus X224 has more influence in our Angus gene pool than any other cow.
