Teddy The Steer
Since we announced we were having this sale, many asked why Red Oak and why the name Full Circle Sale. In 1979, I joined 4-H and it was decided we would have steers for a project. We bought a Simmental cross steer at John Tyner’s Club Calf Sale in Red Oak, Iowa at the same barn that is now Omaha/Red Oak Sale Barn facilities. He wasn’t just any steer. He was a steer that allowed a 9 year old boy to lead him anywhere, even down Taylor Street in Mt. Ayr, Iowa. Eventually the neighbors called him Teddy cause his disposition was like a teddy bear. We didn’t have the greatest equipment or facilities back then but it didn’t matter as that steer licked my face every day and I gave him a big hug every day. Needless to say, sale day was a rough one. Two days later was worse as I went with Dad to sell the remaining steers that didn’t get shown. To our surprise there was Teddy in a large group of steers. Just like out of the movies, Teddy left the group and came running and before Dad could stop me, I jumped the gates and went running. One last time, that steer gave me one more lick and I gave him one more hug. On the way home I told my dad I didn’t want to do this anymore and he suggested we start a purebred herd and I pick the breed. It was hands down Simmental! I told my wife Susan this story and after some thought she said let’s call this the Full Circle Sale as we are going back to where it all started.

Dear Friends and Simmental Family,
Welcome to the first annual Full Circle Sale. After being in the Simmental business for 45 years, we have decided to have our own sale the first Saturday of December at the Omaha/Red Oak Livestock Auction. We look forward to seeing old friends and meeting new ones. The journey we have been on for four and a half decades has allowed us to meet so many wonderful people.
A lot has changed since we started but our commitment to functional cattle and the Simmental breed has not. Our goal has always been pretty simple and that’s to achieve the best genetics we can and share them with the public at an affordable price. Since 1980 we have used AI extensively in our program and for the last 25 years we have emphasized using embryo transfer. Like many of you we have worked off the farm and therefore calving ease is a must. Since everyone is working, we don’t have time for unruly cattle so we also focus on disposition. Since day one we have had to buy all our grain and some hay so we are determined to have cattle that are grass efficient and hay converting animals. Our cattle are expected to calve on pasture unassisted, breed back and raise a calf with minimal to no creep.
We decided to open the gates and offer every bred heifer we have for this sale. With that comes a great opportunity for you, the customer. We feel these females can produce your next replacement female, show heifer or herd sire. Some could be your next donor cow to build a herd around. Whatever your goals may be in the cattle business these bred heifers are designed to help you achieve those goals. The herd bull we are offering is second to none.
