JON SCHABEN

The recipient of this year’s Christensen Elite Award has been involved in the cattle industry their whole life. They have been an ISA Member for many years, and three of their children were IJSA members and showed at the Field Day in the mid 2000’s. This person is an avid supporter of the Junior Association and has donated to and purchased many items from the annual IJSA fundraising auction as well as being a Rung Out Syndicate member for almost two decades. He is probably best know in our Association as our Iowa Beef Expo Sale Auctioneer and donates his time to the Directory and IJSA auctions during our annual banquet. Well, now that we’ve given it away, we will tell you more about him. Jon Schaben grew up in Dunlap where he and his family still reside. His family has owned the Dunlap Livestock Auction for over 70 years, of which he has been an owner since the early 1990’s. He is also co-owner of West Point Livestock Auction in West Point, Nebraska. He and his family also have a cow-calf and backgrounding operation. He is a 1987 graduate of Iowa State University with a major in Animal Science and he and his wife Julie were named “Cy’s Favorite Alum” in 2016. He was named the 2003 Livestock Marketing Association’s World Champion Livestock Auctioneer, and is one of only three people to win the “Triple Crown”: WLAC, International in Calgary, and Greater Midwestern Auctioneer contests. Jon is an instructor at Missouri Auction School and an inductee in the Iowa 4-H Hall of Fame in 2021. In memory of Harold Williams

The 2023 Iowa Simmental Family of the Year recipient has dedicated countless hours to the Iowa Senior and Junior Simmental associations and all of the activities that entails. Carolan Enterprises was formed in 1999 but their involvement with Simmental cattle came long before that. Kellie’s family purchased their 1st Simmental bull in 1976 followed by registered cows a year later. Jason came from a commercial Angus cow/calf operation. He had the opportunity to work with Marshall Ruble and they purchased their 1st heifer from Iowa State University. Jason and Kellie currently run cows with Kellie’s mother on the home farm. Their goal is to produce practical, profitable cattle. As with most operations, they sell seedstock but are also fortunate enough to feed out calves and see the full production cycle for their herd that her dad would be proud of. Since Jason and Kellie are the owners, managers and hired help of the operation, their aim is maximizing the efficiency of all processes and improvements. Kellie grew up involved in the Iowa Junior Simmental association and attended her 1st Regional Classic held in Iowa and the National Classic in Bozeman, MT in the 1990’s. During her years as a junior member, she was lucky enough to have Tom and Cora Lynch and Arlin and Cynthia Snider as her junior advisors. They made such a positive impact on her that when it was her turn, she stepped up to the plate and became a Junior advisor herself. But, being an advisor isn’t a one person show, we all know that Jason was her right-hand man and helped with everything. They knew giving back to the youth in our organization was important so that these kids could have the same opportunities that she was given. Once Kellie and Jason stepped away from the responsibilities of the junior association, once again, Kellie stepped in to fill the shoes as a board member on the senior association board of directors. I think I speak for both the junior and senior associations, that Kellie, we are glad you haven’t learned the word “No”. On behalf of the Harold Williams and Long families, help us congratulate Jason and Kellie Carolan of Carolan Enterprises for being awarded Iowa Simmental Family of the year and thank you for the past and continued years of support to both the Iowa Junior and Senior Simmental Associations.

Futurity Shows

ISA Sanctioned Futurity Show Can Mean Big Money The Iowa Simmental Association’s Futurity Program is a great way to promote Iowa Simmental breeders and their cattle! Breeding heifers or market animals purchased at any of the Sanctioned sales will be eligible to show at the Iowa Junior Simmental Field Day that is held each year in June. There is a separate division for these animals during the show and prize money is divided among this division. The nomination fee is just $10 per animal! HOW TO ENTER: • Iowa Sales or Breeders Pay $200 Sanctioning Fee (Open to in-person, online and private treaty sales. Due May 15, to ISA Secretary/Treasurer Sherrie Moore) • Individual Animals can be nominated for $10 at the time of purchase (Nominations due end of May 2024 (exact date TBA, usually same time as Field Day pre-entries) to Sherrie Moore and are good for one show season) SHOW RULES: • Market animals or breeding heifers must have been purchased at an ISA sanctioned sale and either buyer or seller must have made entries (nomination) for this show at the time of purchase. • Junior exhibitors wishing to exhibit their futurity animal in the junior show at Field Day must pay a $25 entry and bedding fees and comply with the rules for that show • ORIGINAL registration papers from the ASA. No exceptions! Animal does not have to be in a junior’s name to exhibit in this part of the Futurity show. • Market Animals will be shown by weight, must be 1/2 (50%) blood or higher Simmental, and must be born after January 1st of the previous year (yearling) • Breeding Heifers will be shown by birthdate, and must have been born between September 1st (fall yearling) and December 31st (fall calf ) • Percentage Heifers must be registered 1/2 – 7/8 blood Simmental • Purebred Heifers must be registered 7/8 blood or higher Simmental PRIZE MONEY: • Payback will be pro-rated per class from futurity nomination fees • Champion Futurity Market Animal will receive $250 and reserve will receive $150. • Champion Futurity Percentage Heifer will receive $500 and reserve will receive $250. • Champion Futurity Purebred Heifer will receive $500 and reserve will receive $250
