Welcome to the 2024-2025 Fleckvieh Simmental Fullblood Federation Directory! We’re excited to give you the best resource for Fleckvieh genetics from the United States, Canada & Australia! As we strive to strengthen, promote & expand our breed, our membership base has remained constant; we have lost a few Members and gained several new ones. Our goal as Fleckvieh, Fullblood, and Fleckvieh Genetic breeders has also remained constant: Promoting the Fleckvieh Fullblood breed and continuing to show the Commercial breeders the benefits of Fleckvieh genetics on their herd. More and more commercial cattlemen are choosing Fleckvieh sires to improve carcass quality, yield grades, as well as adding pounds to the scales and heterosis! It must be working as we are selling more bulls, year after year, to those farms and ranches and have people actively seeking our genetics.
Our FSFF Junior membership continues to be strong, and the 2023-2024 show season highlighted our Juniors and their representation and dedication to the breed. The FSFF Board is dedicated to supporting these Junior Members and we are adding more money to our scholarship program, along with Breeders who are donating to the Junior program specifically. In 2023, for the first time at NAILE, the winner of the Challenge Cup Fullblood Junior Heifer show, walked onto the green shavings to compete for the Supreme Champion! Thank you to Larry Maxey and his tireless work with NAILE to achieve this goal. FSFF paid $2000 in show premiums to our Junior winners at AJSA Junior Nationals, NAILE, Cattleman’s Congress & Dixie Nationals! Be sure to check out the Show page and see why we are so excited for the future of our breed!
FSFF is excited to be a Platinum Sponsor of the World Simmental Fleckvieh Federation 2024 Congress, held in Alberta & Olds Canada, July 28th through August 5th. Breeders from around the world will be attending this event, and we will be distributing these Directories to all that attend! From farm tours to the Simmental Sale to the YCSA National Classic Conformation Show, be sure to check out the World’s page to give you all the details. We hope to see you there!
The success of our breed has always been about you, our members! We may be a small breed in numbers, but we are mighty as a group with our dedication to preserving and improving the Fleckvieh Fullblood genetics that started the breed. Please don’t hesitate to contact us with your thoughts and ideas of improving the Federation to make it work better for you! GOD
BLESS, FSFF President2024 Fullblood Simmental Fleckvieh Federation

The FSFF is a non-profit organization created by Fleckvieh breeders to promote the advantages of Fullblood Simmental Fleckvieh cattle around the world. Our diverse group breeders work diligently to develop superior genetics as we continue to educate purebred and commercial producers on the benefits of Fleckvieh genetics in their herd: Increased heterosis, excellent fertility, calving ease, strong maternal traits, calf vigor, polled and horned and dilution free genetics, increased carcass weight. The FSFF works with the American Simmental Association, the Canadian Simmental Association and other registry associations to track our cattle worldwide.
Membership dues in the FSFF are collected annually and are $100 USF, for US/International breeders, and $100 CF for Canadian breeders. With your paid membership, your farm will be listed on our website listing of breeders on Fleckvieh.com and printed in our membership directory. Memberships are due in January of each year and run through December. Renewal forms are emailed/mailed to existing members each year. You can also renew your membership on our website @ https://fleckvieh.com/membership-application/. Our website has a link to pay with PayPal or with a debit/credit card through Square (with additional processing fees).
The FSFF continues to reach our fellow breeders through Facebook, Instagram and on our website at Fleckvieh. com. We offer a classified ad page for our members to sell live animals and frozen genetics. Each member receives a 30-day free ad listing per year. Additional listings can be set up for a small fee. We also will list sale dates for your farm on our Sales page. You can reach us by email @ Fleckvieh.fsff@gmail.com and watch for our emails for Federation news & announcements.
The FSFF uses several outlets to promote Fullblood Simmental Fleckvieh cattle.
We advertise in several print publications through the year including, Progressive Cattle, The Register/SimTalk, Gulf Coast Cattleman & The Stockman. The FSFF is proud to be a platinum sponsor of the World Simmental Fleckvieh Congress held the summer of 2024 in Alberta, Canada. Please see the World Congress page for more info.
Our FSFF booth travels multiple times each year to sales and shows in the United States and Canada. All visitors to our booth can pick up a copy of this directory promoting our members along with other promotional info on the Fleckvieh breed. We also offer FSFF shirts & hats for purchase. Please contact us so we can schedule to attend your next event.
Larry Maxey has been leading the charge to preserve and promote Fullblood and Fleckvieh genetics for over 50 years. The Kentucky cattleman worked tirelessly to bring these genetics back to shows like the North American Livestock Exposition (NAILE), and has been instrumental in promoting the breed across the US and Canada. Maxey was awarded the Progress Through Performance (PTP) Lifetime Achievement Award at the NAILE in November of 2023, recognizing his passion and dedication for promoting the cattle he loves.
Maxey first became involved with the Simmental breed in the 1970s. His job led him to the office of a Purina executive, who advised the young cattleman to look into the Simmental breed, which had just landed in North America. He also pointed him in the direction of a large ranch that was using Simmental genetics. Maxey visited this ranch and saw a group of half-blood Simmental females with three-quarter-blood calves at their side. Observing the performance of these cattle he knew he wanted to dive into the Simmental business himself. “I had a desire to do something different, and I wanted something with performance. I couldn’t believe the difference between the crossbred calves and straightbred calves. I knew we were raising these cattle for pounds, and could see there was something to this,” Maxey recalls.
He started his Maxey Valley Farms in northern Kentucky, which is still in operation today, sourcing Fullblood and Fleckvieh genetics from various breeders, and even South Africa by way of Canada.
Simmental genetics changed rapidly from the red and white cattle that came from Europe, and the majority of breeders across the US and Canada tailored their genetics away from these traditional cattle. Maxey attended a NAILE show in the 90s, and saw that Simmental cattle blended into the rest of the barn. “It was startling to me that there was no breed identity — our cattle looked the same — and everyone had bred the traditional out of them,” Maxey shares.
At a Fullblood Simmental Fleckvieh Federation (FSFF) meeting in Canada Maxey shared his concern for the breed. The meeting format was changed last-minute to a forum, and he was asked to get up and speak in front of a full room of people. Maxey wasn’t prepared, but did have something meaningful to share. “I just said what was in my mind and heart about how the breed had lost its identity. I recounted my experience with the NAILE, and shared about my experiences getting started as a young man,” Maxey recalls. “I probably had the last traditional-looking Simmental in the NAILE barn over ten years ago, and I said I was going to make a commitment that if there was one traditional Simmental in the barn it would be mine.”
The room responded that other efforts to promote these cattle had fallen short. Maxey responded by saying, “We as breeders have to understand that we can’t expect people to knock down our gates to come see these cattle, we have to take the cattle to them.”
One major issue was that the traditional cattle were shown alongside the modern black and polled cattle, making it difficult for judges to sort each class. Essentially, Fullblood/Fleckvieh and modern Simmental had become two different breed types. Maxey wasn’t dissuaded. “I had to set out a plan to create a separate Herdbook to get our Fullbloods a registry,” he says.
During this time, Maxey kept his promise to get Fullblood/Fleckvieh cattle back in the NAILE barn. “That
first year we did have cattle down there. I had convinced Ron Nolan with Bar 5 Simmentals in Canada to come down, and by the next year we had 18 Fullbloods there that we had to show with the purebreds,” he shares.
Maxey knew that to grow the breed’s presence and encourage others to attend, he was still going to have to get a separate show. With the encouragement of ASA leadership, Maxey wrote a letter to the Board of Trustees requesting that Fullblood/Fleckvieh cattle have their own designation in the Herdbook. His request was approved, and he moved on to the next hurdle — getting the NAILE to approve a separate show.
Maxey wrote a letter to NAILE leadership and was met with a lot of hesitation; having a separate show would require a minimum of 50 head. “I started traveling all over the country, and up to Canada, recruiting people,” Maxey remembers. “I made a commitment to have 50 head, and we’ve had the separate show ever since.”
Maintaining entry numbers and encouraging breeders to attend the NAILE has required constant work, but Maxey’s efforts have paid off, with other shows adding a Fullblood/Fleckvieh category to their entry forms. Recently, the category was added to the AJSA Classics, and other PTP shows like the Dixie National and Cattlemen’s Congress.
The 2023 NAILE was especially memorable, with the Fullblood/Fleckvieh show moving from a secondary building to Freedom Hall. With 113 entries, the show kicked off a full day of Simmental classes. “We finally got to Freedom Hall, which was my goal from the beginning,” Larry says. “We’re not a secondary breed — we’re a primary breed of cattle.”
Maxey is an avid writer and historian, sharing stories in his Fleckvieh Forum column of the Register every month. This project started to share both the past and present story of Fullblood/Fleckvieh cattle, and has since expanded into other industry history. He continues to travel extensively, balancing his involvement with the breed and his own farm. Maxey wants to see his efforts spread to shows across the country. “I would encourage all venues to look seriously at approving a separate show. There are juniors and young people who will come,” he says.
He was surprised and honored to receive the PTP Lifetime Achievement award. “It’s something that has a lot of meaning and value. I was so honored to receive it, and I never dreamed I would be the recipient of it.”
MAXEY HAS BEEN AN AVID PROMOTER OF FULLBLOOD AND FLECKVIEH GENETICS FOR DECADES.
Maxey Valley Farms, located in northern Kentucky, has been in the Simmental business since 1973.
THE FSFF PROUDLY PRESENTED THE 2023 FRED SCHUETZE AWARD TO
The 2023 Fred Schuetze Award was presented to Bill & Jane Travis, Pine Ridge Ranch LLC, of Dallas, TX, at our Annual Meeting at Little Creek on 10/20/23. The Travis’ have been raising Simbrah cattle, influenced with Fleckvieh genetics, since 1981. Their goal was to produce heart healthy, tender beef, out of the most efficient animal for hot areas. After over 40 years of developing their herd, they have reached their goal.
Fred Schuetze of Simmentals of Texas wrote about the Travis’:
“Bill and Jane Travis, although they are Simbrah breeders, are huge advocates of Fleckvieh Genetics and use these genetics in the design and makeup of their Simbrah cattle. Bill and Jane have traveled extensively over the years and while promoting Simbrahs, they always promote the fact that Fleckvieh genetics have played a huge role in the development of their herd. It is this type of promotion that increases the use of Fleckvieh genetics not only in the USA but around the world.
Bill and Jane, thanks for what you have done for Fleckvieh genetics and please except this award as a token of thanks and appreciation from the Fleckvieh Breeders of the FSFF.”
Paul Estes of Estes Ranch wrote this about Bill & Jane:
“I first met Bill and Jane Travis, when my kids were showing their heifers at their initial South Central Regional American Junior Simmental Association Classic in Shreveport, Louisiana. They happened to walk by our stalls and took the time to introduce themselves. Their interest in my kids’ heifers and their pedigrees was genuine, but more importantly, they truly wanted to connect and get to know us. I observed that they made the effort to introduce themselves to those they hadn’t met before and engaged in conversations with those they already knew, displaying their heartfelt support to all the exhibitors and their families they encountered that day.
Later that summer, at the National American Junior Simmental Association Classic in Hutchinson, Kansas, they approached us again with a warm familiarity, conversing with my family and I as though we were old friends. From that point onwards, at every AJSA Classic and other Simmental or Simbrah events/sales we attended, Bill and Jane were always present and encouraging. They were pleased to see us, eager to discuss Simbrah cattle and enhancing our genetics, which is the same stewardship they still extend to Fleckvieh breeders today.
By the time I met Bill and Jane, the majority of our cow herd comprised Simbrahs. We had developed our Simbrahs from crosses of ¼ Simmental ¾ Brahman bulls with our Purebred-influenced Fleckvieh and some Fullblood Fleckvieh cows, resulting in highly fertile and productive cows. Despite our success in terms of feed conversion, gains, and yield grade, we were struggling to achieve more than 60% Choice. Bill and Jane Travis played a critical role in not only providing us with genetics to enhance the quality grade of our cattle but also offering invaluable advice on feeding Simbrah cattle. As a result of their guidance, our Simbrah calves now consistently grade over 95% Choice every year.
Mr. and Mrs. Travis will tell you Fleckvieh cattle have been an integral part of their 40-year plan from the very beginning. They are truly invaluable assets to breeders and AJSA exhibitors of Fullblood Fleckvieh Simmental and Fleckviehinfluenced Simbrah cattle. Their contribution has undoubtedly enhanced the FSFF organization. It is my firm belief that there is no one more deserving of the “FSFF Fred Schuetze Award” than Bill and Jane Travis. Congratulations to them and God Bless.”

Our 2023 Annual Meeting was held on 10/20/23 at Little Creek Cattle in Starkville, Mississippi at The Magnolia Classic sale. FSFF provided dinner before the annual meeting that was attended by 23 FSFF members. Bill Zimmerman with the ASA joined us for the meeting and gave a presentation. At this year’s meeting, the membership elected two new Board members: Jason McLean, Rich MC Simmental Farms, Manitoba, Canada and Fred Schuetz, Simmentals of Texas, Granbury, Texas, as well as returning for another term, Genry Ellison, Circle E Farm LLC, Lucedale, Mississippi. FSFF would like to thank Rebecca Roberts, Rugged R Cattle Company, Wisner, Louisiana and Lance Smith, Logland Farms, Roland, Oklahoma for their service to the FSFF Board of Directors.
The Board of Directors voted to rotate future annual meetings throughout the membership area, to allow all our members the opportunity to attend. The 2024 Annual meeting with be in conjunction with the Fleckvieh Heritage Sale in Roland, Oklahoma, on Friday night, September 20th. Watch our social media pages, your email and mailbox for more information.
The FSFF would like to take this opportunity to thank Dr. Jason & Nikki Gress of Little Creek Cattle, who graciously allowed the FSFF to have their Genetic Fundraiser at The Magnolia Classic, as well as hosting our annual meeting on the Friday before the sale, for the past several years. In 2023, they also made a substantial donation directly to the FSFF. We sincerely appreciate their support!
In 2023, we had successful Silent Auctions at the Back to Grass Sale in Henderson, Texas on 05/20/23 and at The Magnolia Classic in Starkville, Mississippi, on 10/21/23. We had a great offering of items at both sales. Thank you to Jacob Prior with Wild Track Cattle, Ben Estes with Estes Ranch and Dr. Jason and Nikki Gress with Little Creek Cattle for their continued generous support of the FSFF.
FSFF held their Genetic Fundraiser at Little Creek Cattle on 10/21/23, offering 20 lots of frozen genetics. Thank you to our FSFF members that donated genetics: Estes Ranch; CJ Simmental Ranch; Phoenix Cattle Co.; S/M Fleckvieh Cattle; Circle E Farm LLC; Simmentals of Texas; Red Oak Farm; Ford Land & Cattle, Doug Parke & John Dixon. Thanks to everyone that purchased these lots and another big thank you to Dr. Jason & Nikki Gress, for allowing us to sell these genetics at The Magnolia Classic, for the last several years.
The FSFF also needs to thank Lance Smith with Log Land Farms, who again donated a percentage of the sales from the 2023 Fleckvieh Heritage sales, back to the FSSF. There was also a donation lot in the sale with the proceeds going to the FSFF Junior scholarship fund (see the Junior Scholarship information).
Fundraising is a critical part of the annual FSFF budget, and we cannot thank our Members enough for going above and beyond to support us! Watch our Facebook page for upcoming fundraising functions in 2024-2025!
