the poetry of presence Poetry needs no definition. We feel it everywhere, flash-lighting the wonderous and explaining the intangible. It is the vital catalyst that engengers a portrait-likeness with enduring humanity. A life-painting should not be polite, it should slash its way with brush and pencil into a place between spirit and flesh. This is the goal and success of Alan McGowan work. He told me that his ‘work aims at the fleeting and restless, where something eternal might lie’ and this is why he goes back obsessively, honing his understanding of our phycial prescence and what lies underneath. It is no surprise McGowan’s work is so celebrated internationally, regularly appearing in the largest competitions and always commanding multiple views. Like McGowan, we too are pulled back to a place he has found. Hayley on Green oil on paper | 57cm x 42cm
