From the Desk ISN’T IT ALWAYS THE WAY? THE GOOD INTENTIONS FROM SOME, ARE RUINED BY OTHERS... WELCOME TO THE MODIFIED CAR SCENE!

So, group of horsepower-hungry guys and girls get together on an organised cruise in Canberra to fill the void left from the Summernats. Their intentions were to get together, meet at a certain spot and go for a cruise on each day that the Summernats were to have been on. Sounds simple enough, right? The group was made up of your traditional street machining fans of all ages, taste in cars and brand loyalty. Everyone that was there understood that they were going to be scrutinised by the local authorities everywhere they went and everyone knew the consequences if they did the wrong thing and got caught.

Then, as usual, a group of people gathered in the middle of Braddon – a traditional hang on spot for car enthusiasts during the annual event. The problem was, these people were hell bent on causing trouble, enticing drivers in standard cars to do burnouts in front of other boofheads who cheered those drivers on. And, before you know it, things got out of control and the Police were called in. Naturally, the Media were on hand to witness everything and yes, it made the news – for all the wrong reasons. Let’s get one thing straight.

These brainless dickheads are not car enthusiasts. Sure, they may be wearing Summernats t-shirts, but genuine car guys and girls? I think not. After destroying any chance of cruising around the city, these dumb shits decide to head out to near the Eaglehawk hotel and simply cause more havoc. From the video I watched, (yes, they put this shit on “YouTube” clearly showing their own faces for all to see) there was hundreds of people lining the roadways while drivers in stock V6 Commodores do burnouts and donuts without any control at all, narrowly missing those cheering them on. Is it any wonder the authorities are anti-modified cars? This shit makes my blood boil. As it should with any legitimate car enthusiast. I honestly hope that the Police have viewed the footage, find some of these clowns and make an example of them.

On a happier note, how good is it to see more and more events popping up on the calendar? OK, so there’s no guarantee that they will go ahead, but at least promoters, club and organisers are out there trying to make it happen. I’ll do my very best to get as many events into the PSC pages as I possibly can.

Lastly, I want to sincerely thank everyone who sent in messages of encouragement, best wishes and congratulations on bringing back the Performance Street Car brand. As you can imagine, putting together a magazine of this size every four weeks is a mammoth job and sometimes it gets very stressful, but when you get great feedback, it spurs you on to keep going. On that note, 2021 is going to be a damn fine year – Covid or not! Enjoy this issue of Performance Street Car – Australia’s Toughest Car Magazine!

WHAT’S HAPPENING CYBER CRUISIN’ Whilst scouring the internet for something I probably didn’t need, I stumbled across this Pro-Street Rambler wagon. In standard form, the Rambler wagon isn’t something you’d even give a second look to. Troy Trepanier highlighted the Rambler’s possible good look with his version dubbed “Rumbler” but now there’s this killer Pro-Street Rambler wagon built in the USA. The tubbed, twin carb, two-door Rambler looks cool in a satin black / gloss black paint and of course, it’s a street legal pro-streeter!

Like many events in 2020, the Sydney Hot Rod & Custom Auto Expo had to make the decision to cancel their show at Rosehill Racecourse in May last year. INDOOR DRIVE IN OPENS IN MELB

Ever been to the drive-in and been caught in the rain? It’s not a great experience, but that’s no longer a problem with the opening of Australia’s first Indoor Drive-In cinema at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre. Part of the Village Cinema group, the new centre is not only water-proof, it allows the Drive-In experience to happen during the day as well. Held inside the venue’s giant exhibition bays, usually housing many events, the cinema has space for 174 cars and will have a couple of food trucks for those wanting snacks. The cost is just $49 per car. Unfortunately, the cinema was initially launched just for the school holidays and finished up on Jan 26th. Hopefully, the MCEC will bring back the cinema again during 2021.

Hi Paul, I was watching the youtube clip of Richard Wiltshire’s blown HQ. I see plenty of blown cars around but was wandering if they are road worthy? I have not been able to find anyone that will provide a certificate to get the road worthy with a super charger fitted. I want to put a supercharger on mine. Any ideas?

Thanks Dean S Via Messenger G’day Dean, I doubt very much whether you’ll find an engineer that will sign off on a big blower hanging a long way out of the bonnet. There would definitely be vision issues and sharp edges of protruding engine hardware present all kinds of problems. I reckon most blown cars run the risk of getting court, though if you drive sedately and avoid area’s where the ratbag element gather, you’ve probably got half a chance. Good luck with it.

PSC was the go to magazine back in the day for those people wanting tough car features. G’day Trev, I was recently in the same boat and sat down with a few older issues. I guess the difference is technology today compared to the 80’s and 90’s when PSC was available. Manual focus camera’s, primitive ways of design and printing etc all add up to how it was back then. These days, with everything that is on offer, you’d expect things to be better than they were. Having said that, I’ll take the compliment anyway. 2021 is going to be a great year with many big things coming. Hold onto your hat, it’s going to get very hectic…

Mark Rendall is doing his part to keep the international relationship between the UK, the USA and of course Australia, a tough one with a major makeover on his Morris Minor…

The little British tudor arrived at Mark’s place on New Year’s day, 2019 looking like it had been abandoned and in desperate need of a total restoration. Mark however, isn’t into the “restore to original” deal and promptly made his new year’s resolution to build this Morris roller into a full-tilt Pro-Streeter.

The factory chassis has been sent to scrap with an ’82 Hilux chassis copping plenty of work to suit the Morris’ dimensions. The frame has been shortened considerably, with the rear rails relocated inwards to accommodate the planned 315 Radials that were destined to be squeezed under the rear guards. To make that a reality, the Hilux diff had to be narrowed…a lot. Fitted with a 3.7 LSD centre, the diff is located with reset leaf springs that will be helped out with Caltracs. The front end of the chassis has had a Gemini front section grafted to it, with Ford stub axles and discs adapted to it.

When it came time for the body to join the chassis, it was positioned with a slight rake and then tacked into place. The plan from the outset always involved fitting a small block Chev up front, and to accommodate the much larger engine, the lower section

of the firewall was cut out and placed in the scrap heap, whilst the top section was cut out, turned around and welded back into place, offering a factory style recess for the distributor. Clever, huh? You’ll see in a couple of pics that at one point, the small block had stacked injection (converted to EFI) which is what Mark had intended to run (see the cool concept drawings by Aden Jacobi), but since then, the availability of a blower kit has seen the injection removed and a 6/71 blower take its place. The carbies will eventually make way for an EFI hat. A race-spec Turbo 400 auto built by Dave at Stef’s Race Glides (and fronted with a 4000rpm converter) sits behind the blown small block. The potent driveline combined with the Morris’ lightweight will certainly get Mark’s heart rate pumping when he jumps on the go pedal.

The plan for the interior space is to combine race car with street rod, starting with the ’32 Ford dash panel that will be filled with custom gauges and kept company with the billet Ididit tilt steering column that’s already in place and topped with a steering wheel whose pattern will be replicated in the door handles, shifter and pedals to keep the theme flowing. Naturally, there will be a roll-cage to stop that pumped small block from twisting the Morris inside out and the seating will comprise of just two, low-back bucket seats. The wheel tubs in the back remove any chance of a rear seat. For something different, and for a little storage, Mark will be strapping a wicker picnic basket between the tubs.

Externally, there will be some subtle modifications made including welding the rear guards to the body, flush mounting the glass, splitting the bumpers, smoothing the bootlid and adding Model A tail lights and vents to the side of the bonnet. The colour of choice, as shown in the renderings, will be a custom burgundy.

There’s been plenty of time and effort lavished onto the Morris so far, and Mark wants to send out a big thank you to Juice from Juice Customs for all of his help so far and to Nigel “Hambster� Elsmore for the chassis mods and fabrication work to date. Keep an eye out for this monster Morris in the near future. Morris may have named this model the Lowlight, but thanks to Mark and his mates, this one will be a Major Highlight!

Anyone that has built a high-quality muscle car will tell you its not a cheap exercise. Any set time frame will most definitely blow out too, as is often the case. So when a big block powered HK coupe came up for sale in South Australia, Edin weighed up the options and jumped on a plane bound for Adelaide. After a quick test drive around the block, an impressed Edin secured the purchase.

The day had finally come that Edin had been anxiously waiting for – the Monaro had arrived in Sydney. Finally, it was the day for him to hit the streets in his new Monaro.

Whilst he cruised around in the HK for quite a while, the desire for more power soon took over. Having spent his childhood hanging out with the late Joe Sabato, who eventually went onto own Hume Performance and who had built up a big reputation in piecing together tough engine combo’s. It was a no brainer for Edin to see his lifelong mate about filling his engine bay with something that was going to live up to his expectations. After going through various options, Joe offered up his own, fuel-injected, nitrous-sniffing big block. An engine that sported no less that 632-cubes and an impressive amount of horsepower. How could Edin pass up something like that? Unfortunately, we lost Joe in a motoring accident, this is the final engine he built.

Having already been fitted with a big block, the transition to the bigger, badder engine wasn’t really a problem, though while the HK was off the road, Edin took the opportunity to make some other mods to the coupe to make it just that much better. Before the engine was bolted into place, the factory front cross-member and suspension was swapped out for an entire Rod-Tech independent front end set up, giving the Monaro much better steering, braking and suspension capabilities. At the other end, the mini-tubbed rear end has a full Mark Williams-equipped 9-inch located with MotorFab leaf sliders with a pair of Strange billet adjustable shocks providing a better ride.

Other notable upgrades made to the underside include four-wheel Wilwood discs and calipers, with an Astra power steering pump making tight turns a breeze. I mentioned earlier that Edin found the Monaro in South Australia, so it’s makes sense that TUFF K rolls on a set of satin finished Centerline wheels.

With the underside rebuilt and ready to go, Edin’s attention turned back to the big cube fat block engine just waiting to fry those 275/60 rear bags.

Joe built this motor for himself back in the day with the intention of making as much aspirated horsepower as he could, and that meant using only the best internals. When the deal was done to drop it into the Monaro, Joe had to tame it down just a little to make it more streetable. The Dart block houses a tough rotating assembly that includes a Callies Magnum crank swinging Oliver rods and JE pistons wrapped in the same brand rings. CamTech ground up the custom cam that gives the Monaro an unmistakable tough car idle. A Moroso billet oil pump ensures the oil gets distributed from the modified Canton sump the instant Edin flicks the ignition key.

And it gets even better the further up the parts list we go. Check out those allow cylinder heads!

Impressive huh? They are custom Pontiac heads that have been reworked using Manley severe duty valves and springs and more suitable rockers. Filling the gap between the heads

is a Hogan sheet metal intake that currently holds two 1150cfm Dominator Quickfuel carbs.

Their days are numbered however, with a pair of 1250cfm Dominators being readied to take their place - taking the horsepower figure higher in the process. And let’s face it, that’s what it’s all about! As you’d expect, the headers are custom made and offer an easy way out for the gases once the MSD7 series ignition (with crank trigger) fires the big Chev into life. On a strict diet of 98-octane pump fuel, the 632 made in excess of 1100-ponies, but that figure really is a starting point as it will increase with the new carbs and some fine-tuning. Edin, putting a conservative spin on it, is aiming for around 1000hp at the tyres. And it’s all pointing that way so time will tell. Though the engine is all black, the visual standout is the tribute to Joe that adorns each of the sheet metal rocker covers. Joe may be gone, but he leaves behind a huge legacy of tough engines and for his long time mate, Edin thought it was only fitting to show his respect the way he has.

Obviously, he (Edin) is into tough muscle cars, because that red HQ Monaro in a couple of pics, also has his name on the rego papers!

I mentioned earlier that Edin found the Monaro in South Australia, so it’s makes sense that TUFF K rolls on a set of satin finished Centerline wheels.

When you have that much horsepower to get through to the rear end, you don’t back the engine with just any old transmission. Knowing full well that Al’s Raceglides are well versed in building tough transmissions that can handle any power or punishment you try to put through them.

For TUFF K, Edin dropped in one of Al’s purpose built Turbo 400 with a Protorque converter and B&M shifter. So far, the box and the driveshaft from Ricky’s Driveshafts have taken the job on and handled it with ease.

As they say, do it right and do it once... When the engine was dropped into the car, some modifications had to be made to the bonnet - obviously to let the engine hardware hand through. Frank Velardi at V Resto not only cut the hole, but also reshaped the bonnet so it can be lifted without having to remove the rear air cleaner. Frank also spent some time smoothing out the engine bay and changing the colour from black to the body colour. Most recently, Frank has taken over the maintenance of the Monaro and his passion to strive for perfection in his work is more than anyone could ask for. There’s no doubt TUFF K is in great hands.

Speaking of the body, it’s still how it was when Edin purchased the car. The body is straight and the Picardy Red paint is shiny. Edin, being a perfectionist rates the body and paint at 7 out of 10.

Personally, I reckon he’s being a very tough judge... Like the body, the interior trim is almost full factory spec. The seats are just how the General intended in black vinyl and the steering wheel, dash and radio are all circa 1968 - though the centre console has seen a pile of AutoMeter gauges added along with the fitment of the B&M shifter in space where you would usually find the HK version. Although the original radio is shown in the dash, there’s a bluetooth equipped stereo added to supply the cruising tunes - that is if you could hear it over the engine!

Since Edin secured his dream car, he has spent around a year and a small fortune (OK, maybe it’s a large fortune but who’s counting!) to build the HK into the car he has always wanted. Obviously, he is into tough muscle cars, because that red HQ Monaro in a couple of pics, also has his name on the rego papers! The blown Mustang is owned

by Frank Velardi and seeing that he spent plenty of time and effort on the HK’s build, we thought it only fitting for his ride to be in a couple of pics too! For Edin, there’s a few small things he still wants to sort out before he’s 100% happy with the Monaro, and when they are done, he’ll just enjoy cruising the HK with his family whenever he gets the opportunity. Cruise on...

JOE SABATO I remember getting the call saying that Joe had passed. I’d only spoken to him a few days before and was saying how much he was enjoying being busy with engines etc. Everyone had the same opinion of him - a fun loving guy who valued his mates, loved his family and enjoyed drag racing. Edin was privileged for Joe to work on his car as they’ve been friends since childhood. Whenever Edin fires up the HK and gives that 632-cuber a hard time, I reckon Joe would be looking down with a massive smile. RIP my friend.

After a long break, racing finally returned with a huge meet at South Coast Raceway bringing with it some of the toughest cars and bikes to Portland all eager to hit the black top in anger.

Run over two days, with Qualifying on Saturday and Eliminations on Sunday, the South Coast 660 event provided plenty of action, marking a successful return to drag racing in the Summit Racing Equipment Sportsman Series. After Covid-19 halted all racing, you could tell by the attitude taken by racers, track staff and spectators that they were ecstatic to be back racing again. With no less than ten well-subscribed brackets making up the meet, the spectators were treated to a variety of cars and bikes on track including Super Stock, Top Sportsman, Super Sedan, Super Gas and Supercharged Outlaws to name just a few.

It’s funny how things go full circle. When I started doing photo shoots full time in the mid 90’s, one of the first batch of cars I did was a wild, V8-powered VW Beetle. It was Lime Green, tubbed and wore MONSTA numberplates. It was tough! It’s creator and owner, Aly Bilal, just so happens to own this tough Falcon too. It’s been a long time between drinks for Aly, but this Falcon shows that once you have high octane fuel running through your veins, it’s there for life! That VW, by the way, is still around down Wollongong way and is now Orange and Blue with graphics, full custom trim, detailed undercarriage and did have a blown small block Chev upfront until recently. It’s now in the process of a rebuild with a pumped LS being slotted in for power. Aly bought this Falcon some five years ago, as a nice street car, which at the time, was what he wanted. But when those horsepower demons start putting idea’s into your head, there’s no turning back. Being flat

out at work, and with very little spare time available, Aly decided to employ some of the best in the business to give the Falcon the makeover he wanted.

When you bring together people like Simon Kryger (Innocent Motorsport), Dave Cornford (DRC Group), Sam Fenech (Westend Performance), Norm (Victory Performance Transmissions) and Empire Panel and Paint, you just know, the finished product is going to be everything you could have hoped for – and then somE. The crew at Empire Panel and Paint were first to get their hands on the aging Falcon. Although the XT wasn’t pristine, it was far from a wreck. Aly always intended to keep the XT’s styling just how it had intended to be, so for Empire’s workers, it was a case of sorting out the sheet-metal before laying on the straight red paint. The reassembly of the body didn’t include the factory appointed side mouldings or badges, giving the Falcon a clean skin.

Forget about throwing luggage of any size in the boot though, there’s barely room now that the battery, fuel cell, pumps and big blue bottle of fun have taken up residency.

The newly painted Falcon was soon to be in the hands of Pro-Street legend Simon Kryger, who co-ordinated the rest of the build, with Sam Fenech at Westend Performance given the nod to piece together the stroker Cleveland. Starting with an SVO block, Sam added a Scat stroker crank and rod combo with SRP pistons wrapped in Total Seal rings. A custom solid roller cam provides an aggressive idle and works in with the Crower lifters. The 8-litre sump from Russell caps off the stout bottom end. Sam then set about porting a pair of Trick Flow alloy heads before setting them up with Manley valves, PSI springs and roller rockers. With the heads bolted into place, it was time for the induction. Wanting that old-school cool look, Aly wanted a pair of Quick Fuel 750cfm carbs mounted to the Hogan sheet metal tunnel ram intake. In stark contrast to the red body work, the engine and its associated parts, have been coated in black.

Aly decided to employ some of the best in the business to give the Falcon the makeover he wanted.

With 98-octane pump fuel flowing through it after the MSD Digital 7 ignition fires the small block into life, the 393-cube Clevo made an impressive 660hp on the Westend dyno. For that extra added punch, Nitrous king Simon plumbed up the direct port Nitrous system that gives an extra 150hp hit when required! Getting rid of the gases is a pair of custom headers that flow into a dual 3.5-inch exhaust system. A hot engine needs a great cooling system and the custom radiator set up incorporating twin thermo’s from Rick at South Coast Radiators, keeps the engine at a reasonable temperature. The engine has been lowered back into an engine bay that has been welded up, smoothed out and repainted by Dave Cornford at the DRC Group. Dave also removed the chunk of bonnet steel to allow the carbs to hang through, requiring the bonnet to be repainted too.

Whilst Sam was building the engine, Simon organised for Norm at Victory Performance Transmissions to piece together a C4 box capable of handling the 600-plus horsepower the Clevo was going to push through it. The race-spec box features top shelf internals along with an SDE 9.5-inch converter with a stall speed of 5000rpm.

A B&M Pro-Stick handles the gear shifts. The diff is, of course a 9-inch with a 31-spline Strange centre and 3.9-gears. The diff is located with Gazzard Bros shocks and leaf springs complete with Cal-Tracs. The front shocks are 90/10 and work with the Pedders springs. Each corner has seen a braking upgrade to Wilwood discs that live inside the 20x8 and 20x10 Simmons wheels.

Like the body, the interior space is relatively sedate. A mass of black vinyl dominates the view when you open any door. Covering the seats and door trims, the all black trim harks back to a time when interiors didn’t need all the glitz and glamour. It was all about practicality. Speaking of which, the interior has had some “tough street car” upgrades added including the B&M shifter, AutoMeter gauges (including the 5-inch tacho with lights) and a woodrim steering wheel that looks right at home in this model Falcon. Initially, the plan Jarryd was working towards was to build himself a basic street car, but we all know that no matter how good your intentions are, more often than not, you’ll end up going further than you ever thought. And that’s certainly true here. When most guys are building a tough street Torana, they are happy to take the wheel tubs out to the chassis rail and squeeze under an eight-point-fiveinch rim with a 255-tyre. But our man Jarryd isn’t like everyone else! He wanted to jam his 15x11inch Dumsney Racing rims with the 275/60 tyres under the Torana’s rear end. To make that happen though, he needed to cut the rear end out and put a new set of rails in to allow the big rubber to fit without fouling. Whilst he was at it, the wheel arches have been stretched accordingly.

After eight long years in the garage, Jarryd has created one hell of a tough Torana!

The body and fabrication work didn’t start and end with the rear section of the Torana though. Jarryd purchased a pipe bender and with the help of “Big Pete”, fabbed up the 6-point chrome-moly cage, fitting it as tight to the body as possible. Pete also built the fuel cell. Jarryd reckons the factory got the look of the Torana just right, and decided to leave well enough alone, adding just a reverse-cowl bonnet to give the Torana a tougher demeanour.

After spending a considerable amount of time side by side with his Dad straightening the ageing body and fixing all of the defects in the metal work accumulated over many years, Jarryd’s Dad then fired up the compressor, filled the spray gun with Opaline Blue paint and emptied the colour onto the prepped body. The familiar SL/R blackouts were added to the Torana’s side and door frames, breaking up the all-blue theme nicely.

There’s a reason why builds like this take a number of years to complete.

Sometimes its lack of money, sometimes its lack of time, sometimes it’s a combination of both. For Jarryd, it was simply a case of wanting to put the best possible gear into the build that he could. Good gear costs plenty and to get that money takes time. You only have to see under the Torana to understand that Jarryd wasn’t going to compromise on quality. Menscer 2-way shocks are fitted to each corner, as are Wilwood disc brakes. Up front, there’s Pedder’s springs whilst the rear springs wear the Menscer logo. In true Pro-Street style, Jarryd bolted up a pair of 15x3.5-inch Weld Alumastar’s to compliment the big rear wheels. Open any door and you’ll get to look over one of the neatest tough street interiors I’ve seen for a long time. Even though

the interior space is encased with a roll cage, the interior is still very much user friendly. A pair of retrimmed alloy Kirkey seats replace the lifeless factory buckets, with a custom-made rear bench seat needed to fit around the modified tubs. A combination of slate grey with Golf Ball inserts cover the seats and factory door trims, stitched up by Danny Drewit. The centre console is now just a distant memory, with the Al’s Raceglides shifter now being the focus of attention. To keep Jarryd well informed of what’s happening, a Holley EFI 7-inch digital dash sits behind the SL/R steering wheel and blocks the view of the factory dials, that are now all but redundant. The dash features a few extra switches and buttons, but remains pretty much how the General had specified. As for the stereo, Jarryd prefers to listen to the engine sing…

When the time is right, the Torana will make its debut on the quarter mile where all of that power will be put through those radial tyres.

Speaking of the engine, like many before him, Jarryd opted for an LS-based engine – getting some of the best engine minds in the business to contribute in getting this engine combo sorted. Starting with a basic six-litre LS2, he went to see Nathan Higgins about a set of his custom heads, and he suggested he also speak to Glen Wells – who eventually got the nod to screw the engine combo together. Always wanting to run a custom EFI setup on the LS, Jarryd contacted Kon at Wollongong Auto Services who not only supplied all of the Holley EFI gear, but also organised to have the engine dyno’d and supplied a tune. Now sporting 366-cubes, Glen filled the prepped LS2 bottom end with an LSA crank, Oliver rods with forged Diamond pistons and a solid cam that can rattle

your back teeth loose. The Higgins heads have been CNC-ported and flow so much better than any factory head ever could.

The factory EFI intake has been shown the door, with that space now occupied by a Mast intake manifold, with an Accufab 4500 throttle body and 160bl injectors. For that extra kick in the pants, there’s an Induction Solutions dry single stage direct port Fogger nitrous system plumbed straight into the intake. Custom headers are hanging off the outer edge of the heads, offering a quick way for the spent gases to exit the engine. On a strict diet of E85 fuel, the engine produced 670hp aspirated and after that big blue bottle of fun came into play, that figure jumped to 820hp! Not bad for a genuine street driven car, huh?

An SFI-cased Powerglide backs the engine and to ensure the it doesn’t over power the box, the internals are as tough as they come. The converter is a PTC, eight-inch bolt together item that quickly gets the rev’s up and sends the power through to the 4:11-geared, Strange equipped nine-inch-diff, complete with floating axles.

After a couple of attempts, Geof Tartoosie and his team finally got to show off some of the coolest cars and bikes Adelaide has seen at the Extreme Auto Expo at the Wayville Showgrounds.

With the indoor section of the event spread over three big halls, the line-up of cars and bikes on display was as good as the event has ever had. With the show falling victim to the Covid-19 restriction process a couple of times, the extra time forced on Geof allowed some cars to be finished, proving that as bad as it was to have to put everything on hold, there is always some good to come from the bad news too. As with previous years, Geof has decided to break from tradition, and open the event at

5pm on Friday and then again all day/night Saturday. It certainly works and as they say, “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it!” Friday night was also the night where the Australian Muscle Car Cruise used the event as the starting point. Whilst the show cars glistened inside, the rows and rows of pristine Aussiebuilt Holden’s, Ford’s and Mopar’s put on a huge display outside the building before departing on the cruise. It added a cool element to the show for those attending on the opening night.

Apart from the static show and shine, the 2021 Extreme Auto Expo housed many other elements including Promo Girls, Cackle Car start-up and the Barn Find Auction.

Each pavilion had its share of high-end show cars, tough street cars and hot rods along with plenty of trade stands all offering show specials for the weekend. Whilst many owners set their cars up on specially built displays, the laid back nature of Adelaide was more than evident with the number of cars that were on show without any barriers at all, allowing the spectators to get up close with those cars.

As was the case on Friday night, Saturday afternoon saw the annual Zippel Cruise roll into the Wayville Showgrounds with around 400 of the coolest American cruisers taking up every available parking spot on the grassed area in front of the Jubilee Pavilion. The seemingly endless amount of Detroit steel served up a treat for those attending the show on Day 2. At 7.30pm, the cars rolled out of the venue for the cruise around the city. Apart from the static show and shine, the 2021 Extreme Auto Expo housed many other elements including Promo Girls, Cackle Car start-up and the Barn Find Auction.

As owner of Pro-Street Industries – an Illawarra based chassis and fabrication shop, Matt is surrounded by tough cars every day. During the daylight hours, he creates tubbed, caged and over-powered street and strip cars at the highest level, and his workmanship and attention to detail has earned Matt a huge reputation in the industry. Many would remember Matt’s orange LJ Torana that was a regular runner down the quarter. Wearing PIG-350 plates and powered by a tough, injected small block, the Torana was one of the original tough Pro-Street cars.

After many years of racing, Matt parked the Torana while he concentrated on building up the business. Obviously having so many cool cars coming through the workshop was going to play on his mind, and whilst the desire to go back racing wasn’t as strong as it used to be, the next logical step would be to build a tough street car of his own…

The only deviation from the factory plans was the addition of the 496 badges added to the front guards – giving the game away for what’s providing the power.

From age 10, Matt’s dream was to own a Camaro, just like his Dad did all those years ago.

That car obviously had a lasting impression on Matt. Whilst he never let go of that dream, it took quite a few years for him to bring it to fruition. When the time was right, some ten years ago, Matt began a search for a suitable project car, locating a ’68 SS in the USA that was last registered in 1984 and was showing just 13,000 miles on the speedo. It was simply too good to pass up. The Camaro hit Australia in 2010, and in between customer jobs, Matt managed to spend a small amount of time working on his newly acquired project, knowing that one day he was going to be cruising the streets in his very own Camaro.

Matt likes changing gears himself, so he backed the potent big block with a Muncie Rockcrusher 4-speed

Visually, Matt has decided to keep the Camaro looking like it has just rolled off the showroom floor. Whilst it would have been easy to build his ’68 like he would a customer car with mini-tubs, a multipoint cage, four-link etc, he decided to keep the underside of the Camaro body factory fresh with the original floor and boot panels retained. To bring the body work up to scratch, the Camaro was stripped to a bare shell and attached to a rotisserie for Dave Cornford at DRC Group to work his magic over the Camaro’s aging skin.

Dave spent hours meticulously going over each panel and getting the gaps just right before sending the rejuvenated shell to Steve Bosilkovski at Cruz Restoration to lay the paint over his handiwork.

Whilst Matt could have covered the Camaro in any colour, he opted for Champagne with the factory-styled strips in black. With the body buffed and polished, all new mouldings, badges and bumpers were put in place. The only deviation from the factory plans was the addition of the 496 badges added to the front guards – giving the game away for what’s providing the power.

The resto-theme continues into the interior, where the red leather covering the factory seats and door trims contrasts the body colour perfectly. The wood-rimmed steering wheel is period perfect and the shift lift mounted to the column is an added safety measure for that big cube big block added below the cowl bonnet.

Speaking of the powerplant, Matt pieced together the big block himself, kicking off build with a prepped 4-bolt block, adding a Scat stroker crank and rod combo, JE pistons and a Bullet roller cam with Bam roller lifters. Sealing up the bottom end is a Moroso sump.

A pair of oval-port AFR alloy heads were next on the parts list and were fitted with Pac springs before being bolted into place. An airgap intake manifold joins the heads and holds a single 1000cfm APD carb to supply the engine with copious amounts of 98-octane pump fuel. After the MSD ignition burns the fuel, the gases are sent packing through the two-inch headers that unwind into dual 3.5inch stainless exhaust. And here’s the good part, the 496-cube big block

produces 710 streetable horsepower!

So much for a full resto project! Matt likes changing gears himself, so he backed the potent big block with a Muncie Rockcrusher 4-speed that uses a Hurst Competition Plus shifter to grab the next gear. The power feeds through a 3.5-inch Mark Williams moly tailshaft to a tough 12-bolt diff that is far from standard-spec. Matt knew he needed something special to avoid any embarrassing moments caused by too much power and there was no way his Chev was getting a Ford diff, so he filled the Chev rearend with 3.31 Strange gears in the Wave Track centre, along with 35-spline axles, Race Products floaters, Mark Williams billet caps and a Strange billet yoke.

Problem solved!

And here’s the good part, the 496-cube big block produces 710 streetable horsepower!

The suspension and braking systems also scored considerable upgrades too. The Camaro now sits 2-inchs lower thanks to a pair of drop spindles.

Pedders springs, KYB gas shocks control the ride up front, while the rear now features Gazzard Bros split-mono leaf springs and KYB gas shocks.

The factory brakes are long gone, and with more than 700hp on offer, they probably wouldn’t have been up to the task anyway. That’s changed now though, with Wilwood discs and calipers added to each corner. Initially, the Camaro was rolling on Ralley wheels which certainly suited the Resto look, but more recently, Matt bolted up a set of more impressive wheels – 17x4.5 RC Comp Hammer S up front and 15x8 Weld Vitesse under the standard tubs – the rears rolling on 275/60 rubber.

Visually, Matt has decided to keep the Camaro looking like it has just rolled off the showroom floor.

With the Camaro now finished, Matt ‘s enjoying cruising the coupe whenever time allows, with wife Kayley and step-son Josh also up for the ride. As for the Torana? It’s still sitting in the garage minus its engine which has been sold and due to power another Torana that you’ll see in Performance Street Car soon. For now though, Matt is more in tune with cruising the Camaro than racing the Torana. That could change though at any time. Stay tuned…

When a small group of mates in American cars decide to go for a cruise, it quickly becomes a convoy of US steel.

The Sublime Point lookout, overlooking the pristine beaches of the Illawarra region below, is a great spot to house such a cruise.

In fact, there’s several different groups using the area for the same purpose. As the long line of muscle cars, customs, lowriders, hot rods and Harleys rolled into the venue and onto the grass area for an impromptu show and shine, the picnic crowd, who thought they were in for a peaceful day, were soon surrounded by all kinds of cool cars that created a sea of colour, chrome and horsepower.

It didn’t take long for the curious onlookers to leave their seats and head over to check out the cars that glistened under a picture-perfect summers day. The majority of the cars were Mustang’s and Camaro’s with only a couple of Mopar’s in the mix – including Chris Palazzo’s oh-socool Hemi Cuda. Former Killer Rides cover car, the blown Mustang owned by Dave Mercieca still looks sensational, it’s candy blue paint getting plenty of attention.

With a blown small block up front and huge 22-inch billet jammed on those rear guards, Norm’s Mustang was definitely a stand out. There were quite a few classics on show too including a stunning black ’57 Chev four-door hardtop, a pair of bagged Caddy’s and some lowriding Chevy Impala’s.

The Sublime Point lookout, overlooking the pristine beaches of the Illawarra region below, is a great spot to house such a cruise.

ON ANY SUNDAY Speaking with Eddie Gaboro, who started the cruise together with World Boxing Champion Tim Tszyu (who had his slick ’70 Mustang on show), the idea started with just a “few of the boys” getting together, cruising in their cars on a Sunday to various places. Soon though, as word got out, the number of cars grew and it became apparent that some organising needed to take place to keep the event under control. This exclusive group is made of people invited and/or approved to come along and enjoy the day and celebrate the cars and the lifestyle it offers.

FULL PIT ACCESS HEATHCOTE PARK RACEWAY TRACK UPGRADES CONTINUE

New owner, Lance Warren, has wasted no time in getting stuck into getting the Heathcote Park Raceway facility up to scratch with plenty of work being done both to the track and the facilities required to get the venue to the standard he is aiming for. Most recently, Lance has done a deal with Rino at Racing Onn Promotions and has purchased the Compulink timing system, Jet Dryer, Tyre draggers, track sprayer, weigh bridge and all of the gear needed to host the upcoming events.

Rino is also helping form a specialised crew to allow smooth running of events held at the track.

In amongst the maintenance, the action continues to happen with many events earmarked for the track very soon, including the No Excuses #3 meet on Feb 20/21; the King of the Street Event on March 6 & 7; the Holden Drag Nationals on April 18th and a massive Rotary event Buzznats on April 10th. Of course, this is on top of the regular Test and Tunes that are shceduled as well.

ROLL RACING - IS THIS THE NEXT BIG THING? Though it’s been happening for quite a while now, Roll Racing has firmly cemented its place in the Australian motorsport scene. With events happening in Sydney, Perth and Adelaide, Roll Racing is a fun way to get use out of your car without the pressures of “having to run a number” for those in the crowd. So how does it differ from traditional drag racing? As the name suggests, it’s a rolling start, generally from around 40km/h over a certain distance.

There’s no time slips or ET’s, just a head’s up race against your opponent.

Having the most power, largest tyre or biggest budget doesn’t mean a lot here. It’s how you set your car up and get your power to the ground. Racing starts at 6.30pm and you can keep going all night. Generally, towards the end of the night an Eliminator will be run to see who is fastest on the night. The cost to enter starts at just $65 (Sydney) and $75 (Perth) with entries limited to 150 in Sydney and 110 in Perth to ensure there’s many runs to be had. DARE TO BE DIFFERENT – HELLCAT MERCEDES

Built as a promotional tool for Therapy on Wheels – a charity that helps patients with breast cancer and their families, this Hellcat-powered CLK 320 Mercedes Benz coupe will offer rides down the quarter mile with experienced drag racer and Breast Cancer survivor, Andrea Kahle behind the wheel. Andrea is the CEO of the Charity and knows the benefits of giving those dealing with the disease something else to focus on.

The Mercedes coupe features the 707hp Hellcat Hemi, that has been jammed into the Merc’s engine bay and a serious drag racing rearend, more than capable of dealing with the power being pushed through it by the pumped Hemi. Simon Travaglini of Allfast Torque Converters is the man responsible for building the wild Merc. Simon fitted the engine (recessing the firewall in the process), fabricated the substantial roll cage and handled the rear end mods including the four-link and nine inch diff. The tyre of choice is a 315 radial.

The primary use of the car will be to give passengers the thrill of drag racing, so while it will still be quick, the engine will remain in standard form. The interior too, still retains the Mercedes look, with the exception of the race seats and harness belts and the multi-point cage.

Emanuel found the well-worn Valiant sitting in his mates’ yard, just waiting to be restored – and in Emanuel’s eyes, restored means highly modified. As owner of EA Bodyworks, the Valiant, regardless of its state of disrepair, posed no real problem for Emanuel and his talented team. When the Coupe arrived inhouse at EA Bodyworks, the crew knew they had their work cut out for them, but got stuck into reviving the sheet metal none the less. Emanuel wanted to keep the Valiant’s original look intact, but with some subtle changes made. Not that you can tell, but the sill panels, front guards and quarter panels have been lowered to give the Valiant a much lower stance. Not so subtle is the custom bonnet.

It took Emanuel and his team just six-months to take the Valiant from abandoned wreck to trophy winning standout, with the project coming together just as he had planned.

When the time come for colour, Emanuel had literally an unlimited supply of colour choices in which to paint the Coupe. Proving he isn’t an introvert, he opted to lay on the brightest custom Orange he could find using the Debeer range. The colour extends to the bumpers as well as the wheel rims – in a break from tradition.

After laying down the main colour, Emanuel swapped over to black paint and sprayed on the stripes across the bonnet, rear quarters/bootlid and wheel centres to break up the orange base and eliminating any chrome for

that monochrome look. Whilst the vinyl interior is predominantly black, with the factory seats, door trims and dash top all colour coded to original specs, the dash did get some body colour bringing the exterior theme into the interior in a reverse fashion.

Emanuel didn’t keep the interior entirely how the factory had specified however, with a host of AutoMeter gauges added along with a B&M shifter located ahead of the bench seat. He also included a Pioneer sound system to make cruising the Valiant much more enjoyable.

Talking about cruising, the 318-cube small block has been built to provide miles of effortless cruising no matter what the temperature is or how slow moving the traffic may be. Built by one of Emanuel’s mates, the mild engine uses a single Holley carb mounted to an alloy Edelbrock intake manifold, a mild Crow Cam and X-Force headers to produce around 320 reliable horsepower. It doesn’t look half bad either! A 727 Torqueflite transmission send the moderate power rearward to the standard-spec diff. The suspension has been rebuilt to standard specs, with the disc and drum braking setup retained, hidden behind the 20-inch colour-coded wheels.
