From the Desk HOW DO YOU DEAL WITH STRESS? Everyone has stress in their life in some form or another. It may come from too much work and not enough time to make it happen! It could be from waiting on payments to pay the small mountain of unpaid invoices you have piling up on your office desk! Maybe it’s from dealing with certain people on a daily basis that just do your head in. Whatever the case, how do you deal with it?

I know some will say they head into the garage and tinker on their project? Or they jump into their ‘weekend toy’ for a cruise in a quiet area for no other reason other than to clear your head. But what happens when these very things are the cause of the stress in the first place? Yep, I’m speaking from experience – a very recent experience. As I write this Editorial, I am one week away from Killer Rides Live #4. Now I have no one to blame but myself for taking on the show and also trying to get the next issue of the magazine finished as well, but damn, it’s been a tough slog, especially the past couple of weeks.

I always try to make Killer Rides the best show I possibly can, and due to the relatively small venue – it’s an indoor hockey centre, I try to make up for the lack of numbers by putting together a show full of cars and bikes that have rarely been seen in the Illawarra area. This year has been a battle. No two ways about it. It’s a very stressful thing to do and I’ve certainly been pushed to the edge this year. But I don’t throw up my hands in defeat easily and pushed on to get Killer Rides sorted in time for the doors to open on Saturday morning. Check out the feature in this issue. With the show done and dusted, I plan to take a couple of days off to recover a little, finish this issue off and then, maybe the Chev will come out of the garage for that little, head-cleansing cruise…

The great news is that Anthony is fine and the Torana did what it was built to do. After walking around the lineup of street machines, hot rods, customs and classics, many times, I just kept coming back to one car - John Micev’s oh-so-tough HQ Monaro coupe. G’day Paul, Just wanted to send you a note to congratulate you on Killer Rides Live’s return event. It’s so great to be able to have such a high quality indoor show on our own doorstep. The quality of the cars and bikes on display were once again amazing and the building looked like you had more cars and bikes on display than ever before. They say beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and that’s so true with Studebakers. You either love them or hate them. Thanks to the team at Kenny’s Rod Shop in Boise, Idaho this rare ’52 Studebaker coupe will be much loved when it emerges after a massive rebuild…

The team at Kenny’s Hot Rods are well known for their artistic metalwork and ability to transform what would be considered quite ugly in standard form, to a beautiful reworked rolling piece of art. When Bill & Kit Bienapfl dropped off their well-worn ’52 Stude, they obviously knew that when they finally got the coupe back, it was going to be much different to how they dropped it off.

Although it was complete, the ’52 had seen better days and was definitely in need of a complete makeover from top to bottom, front to back. After removing everything bolted on, screwed together and held in place by clips, Kenny’s sheet metal experts set about stripping back the body to see just what they were starting with. With the plan being to eventually cover the body in a PPG’s Deep Dark Black, the crew had their work cut out for them, but have the skills and knowledge to get the job done. There were some rusty panels revealed, but those areas have been cut out and new panels fabricated and welded into place.

Although it was complete, the ’52 had seen better days and was definitely in need of a complete makeover from top to bottom, front to back.

With a bunch of subtle changes planned for the body, the guys got stuck into it. Unless you’ve owned a ’52 Studebaker, you wouldn’t have noticed the reshaped front fenders that have had new sections added to delete the vents, nor would you have noticed the more streamlined door handles. Moving to the back of the car, the left-hand taillight now opens via a secret button to reveal the fuel filler and the rear fenders have been welded to the body and raised 2.5-inches and the rear and 1-inch at the front. Whilst they were concentrating on the guards, the team lowered the wheel openings too. The front and rear bumpers have been pulled in tight to the body for a much cleaner look. The not so subtle changes include a completely new floor pan and trans tunnel along with a fabricated firewall and inner guards as well as the radiator support panel that has the engine cover incorporated into it. The engine bay now holds an LS3 engine with a 4L80E trans.

The one-off body is draped over an Art Morrison chassis that offers up much better handling and braking capabilities with an independent front end and four-wheel disc brakes to give the Studebaker a modern car feel on the road. Keeping everything rolling is a set of big diametre Billet Specialties rims and sticky low-profile tyres.

At the time of doing this article, the body is ready to shipped out to Regenerated Rides, who handles the paintwork for Kenny, where the Stude will have even more time lavished onto it before the new colour is added. When it returns, the interior trim will be sorted and the driveline will be installed. Once completed, the Studebaker will do the rounds of the show circuit, promoting just how good cars that come from the Kenny’s Rod Shop are…

OK, let’s get this out in the open and let those who don’t understand either move on or reach for a box of tissues. Yes, that’s an LS engine dropped in between the XD’s strut towers. What?

Wait… Why? Wagga Wagga based mechanical shop owner, Robert Cottrell built this Falcon to take part in as many burnout comps as he could get too. And as we well know, building a reputation in those ranks means you need to be noticed – and what’s more noticeable than a bright orange Falcon packing a blown injected engine screaming at 8000rpm? So why an LS? Why not a Ford engine? It all comes down to economics…

Ford diehards, turn away now! You really don’t want to see what’s holding up that blower and hat. Trust me…

Those in the know will tell you the LS engine is the ideal package for this sort of competition. There’s an abundance of donor’s out there in wrecking yards across the country, and although they have recently increased in value, they still offer unprecedented value for money. On top of all of that, they are capable of making plenty of usable power with very few upgrades.

Rob purchased a 6.0-litre version to repower his Falcon, keeping the stock bottom end relatively untouched apart from the sump change to suit the new application, a Mellings oil pump, and a TK2 camshaft. The standard heads scored Lunati double springs to cope with the higher, constant revs.

From that point on, it’s all about bolting on horsepower with a Holley intake modified to accept the 6/71 Weiand blower and Mechanical injector hat.

A diet of methanol pumped through the engine via a A1000 pump gives the engine around 1000hp to use on the pad, destroying tyres with ease.

Robert built the engine inhouse and to date, has proven to be the perfect engine transplant. The engine keeps in tune thanks to the team at BNR Engines who also supplied the fuel system.

Yes, that’s an LS engine dropped in between the XD’s strut towers. What? Wait… Why?

A turbo 400 auto backs the pumped LS and features a 3000rpm converter with gear selections made via a B&M shifter. A custom tailshaft transfers all that power to a built, 9-in…wait, make that a Borg Warner diff. The Falcon’s undersides are basically standard with no really changes to mention in the suspension and braking area. A set of Jegs wheels sit inside untouched wheel tubs.

Inside, the XD is still more or less still showcasing its 1980’s style with the striped seats still in place along with the vinyl door trims, beige carpet and familiar dash. And whilst its no show car, Robert has had to include some upgrades to get the job done out on the burnout pad safely. There’s a half roll-cage installed, and the basic dash facia has now been blocked from view by the Holley EFI digital dash that offer Robert all the info he needs and more! The interior may be sparse, but everything he needs, he has…

Even though the XD’s future is set in stone and will see out its days smoking those rear tyres, doesn’t mean it has to look like a piece of crap whilst doing it! Thankfully for Robert, his Dad is pretty handy with sheet metal and a paint gun, and that ensures that the Falcon’s bright orange paint will always be shining! There were no body mods made before his Dad laid on the colour, other than removing a piece of bonnet steel for obvious reasons.

In the overall scheme of things, that’s a whole lot of car for the money, and when you factor in the fun had at various burnout comp’s around the country, the bang-for-your-bucks is unbeatable. So, is Robert content with how the Falcon has turned out? Pretty much, but he did mention that if he was to redo the car again, he would definitely go with a set of tubs to give the XD a big pair of feet out back.

For now though, its business as usual and that involves smoking the hell out of every town a burnout comp is held!

After a number of Covid and wet weather-related setbacks, Po Tung and his team were finally able to stage the longawaited Sydney Grudge Kings. And man, did they deliver!

The Grudge Kings has a huge reputation amongst drag racers. It’s been that way since the concept was initiated in 2017.

It’s grown quickly to be one of those events that draws in racers from all over Australia, each one giving everything they have in an effort to take home the prize money on offer. With no less than ten racing classes on offer, the entrant list was just a diversified with a line-up of cars guaranteed to excite. The great thing about Grudge Kings is that the classes are all inclusive. That means the

crowds on the hill get to see exactly what they wanted all along – Big Cube Aspirated vs. Turbo vs. Blown vs. Nitrous!

The noise, the long, smokey burnouts and the low, low ET’s. It all proves that this style of racing brings in the crowds.

I reckon it’s the unpredictability of these cars that had the spectators on the edge of their seats all day. Pushing so much power through what still resembles a street car in most cases, can (and does) bring about some wild runs, whether they are racing over the 1/8 or ¼ mile.

All the big names had signed on to the 2022 event including Tristan Ockers, Rob Campisi, Greg Tsakaridis, the Moits, Cannuli, Joe Signorelli, Maatouks, and more – all eager to take home the winner’s cheque at the end of the meet. The Grudge Kings has long held the reputation of bringing the fastest, quickest and most badarse ‘door-cars’ in the country together and the line-up of drivers scattered around the Sydney Dragway pits certainly kept that reputation alive. On the racing surface, the commitment shown by every driver backed up that reputation big time.

As was expected, the racing was as hard fought as ever, with every driver seemingly pushing their cars and their skills to the absolute limits. Even though the track was well prepped to handle the planned racing, some drivers still struggled with their set-ups and over-powered the track resulting in an aborted run not long after that green bulb flashed. Many used the qualifying period to get their set-up on track, ready for the racing that was to come. And when they did, the time tumbled and many drivers were finding themselves going quicker and faster than they ever did before! There were many passes in the 5-second zone, including Tristan Ockers behind the wheel of Mick Duggan’s Chev Nova ProMod – a well-earned first for the team.

That means the crowds on the hill get to see exactly what they wanted all along – Big Cube Aspirated vs. Turbo vs. Blown vs. Nitrous!

Racing of this type is always exciting, but not everything always goes to plan. There were many near misses during the course of the day, but unfortunately, Anthony Terkalas wasn’t so lucky.

His PROWOG Torana suffered major damage after hitting both walls hard. Thankfully, the roll cage and safety equipment did exactly what it was designed to do, ensuring that Anthony was able to walk away from the battle-scarred Torana relatively unharmed, which is all you can ask for in this kind of situation. There was also another incident during racing that saw a Mazda coupe suffered a similar fate – again, the driver survived the incident without any major issues.

Whilst the racing was in full swing on the track, the Eastern hill overlooking the strip with overflowing with all kinds of cars entered in the show and shine, including the Killer Rides ’62 Chev. From show cars, to streeters to burnout competitors and everything in between, the show and shine arena was a popular place to hang-out during the day. I also took the opportunity to handout another Killer Rides Show Standout Trophy and, on this occasion, John Micev in his tough-street 496ci HQ Monaro was the lucky recipient. With that duty done, our time at the Grudge Kings had come to an end. Our congratulations go out to Po and his team for putting together another great day of racing and hope that it returns as an annual event in Sydney without any other interruptions. There’s no denying that the HQ Holden is one of the most popular Holden’s ever, and that means those that want to part company with one are asking high-prices – and getting it! Pete knew this but still had his heart on parking a sedan beside the tonner and Monaro coupe. But, when a viable option presents itself, sometimes it’s worth checking them out. Pete had spoken to the owner of this HK a few times and found he wasn’t going to sell the car to just anyone. He must have liked Pete’s attitude and invited him up for a look. When Pete came face to face with the Prem, he knew it was the car for him. With the deal done, the six-pack HK stocker was on its way back to Wollongong.

With two cool HQ’s already in his possession – a nice one-tonner and an elite show car Monaro coupe, Peter Kotsopoulos wanted to add a four-door sedan to his collection. That was until he found this HK Premier at the right money.

iginally, the HK left the factory covered in Silver Mink with red trim – one of the most desirable colour combinations for this model. The first thing Pete did was to remove the panels (including th mplete front end) and then sandblast the underside to clean it up and make sure there wasn’t any nasty surprises waiting for him. Completing the underside makeover are HQ disc brakes, 90/10 shocks and lowered Lovells springs on the front end with 15x5.5-inch rims and 640-15 Excelsior tyres. The rear end now sits lower too, thanks to reset leaf springs and Koni adjustable shocks.

Like the body and paint, a big part of the interior trim is still as the factory had specified. Check out the condition of the seats. That shows just how good this HK was, and now you can start to understand why Pete jumped at it instead of continuing the search for another HQ. It’s not all standard though. The obvious changes are the B&M shifter and the AutoMeter tacho, but did you also notice there’s a GTS dash and due to the chassis connectors installation, Pete had Paul at Aqua’s Auto Skinz replace the carpet. As this car was a column auto, Peter removed the shifter from the column and then repainted it to match the trim colour. Holden certainly got the trim right back in 1968 as is not only stylish but comfy too. The boot area didn’t escape Pete and his customising ways either, with a black fuel cell dominating the view once the bootlid is lifted.

Even though this particular car was a sixcylinder to start with, the model does come with a Chev V8 option, so doing a bigger cube conversion means no engineers certificate if required. With both HQ’s sporting single-carb small blocks, Pete decided to go down that road for a third time with the HK. Dandy Engines are well versed in building all kinds of street and strip engines and this hot small block was to be no different.

A Dart block was prepped to form the basis for a potent street combo. A Callies crank and rod combo with JE pistons were soon added along with a flattappet mechanical cam that gives the HK 54

a menacing idle. Finishing off the tough bottom end is a Mellings oil pump. AFR 245 heads were bolted to the block with an Edelbrock intake with spacer and APD 950cfm carb. A pair of off-the-shelf Pacemaker headers kick-off the 3-inch stainless exhaust system that sends the gases outwards after the MSD ignition fires the 440-cube small block into life! For the record, the engine made 630hp and 575ftlbs of torque on the dyno! There’s no wonder Pete is smiling when he’s out cruising the HK! An equally tough Turbo 350 auto is backed up to the engine and features a TCI converter to get the Premier off the line a little livelier.

They say good things come to those who wait. David Xuereb waited 11-years for his Cortina to be ready to put on show.

David found this Cortina sitting in a caryard on Sydney’s famous Parramatta Rd way back in 1982. It was his first car that he and his mates roamed the streets in, cruising away every available hour they had free. And whilst David was having a ball behind the wheel, part of him wanted to take the Cortina away from the street and onto the show circuit. It was then that the decision was made to retire the TC from daily duties and set about creating a full-tilt showcar that could hold its own against the best of the best. It may have taken 11-years to complete, but there’s no denying the results are nothing short of spectacular.

Check out that body and paint. The closer you look, the better it gets. David looked after the initial body work himself, ridding the sheetmetal of all its prior indiscretions from years of street use. After getting the panels straighter than a High Court Judge, removing the factory fitted badges and mouldings, David had the bonnet twin-skinned and fabricated an all-new dash. When he was satisfied the body was good to go, David handed the Cortina over to Rod Cordingley at Rod’s Custom Restorations to applied the Protec Bright Red straight tinter. The colour extends from the body, to the interior and smoothed out engine bay and underside. Show quality doesn’t even begin to describe just how good the paint is on the Cortina.

Whilst the exterior has essentially kept the Ford look in check, the same can’t be said for the interior space. There’s plenty of Saddle Brown leather used to cover the four modified Lexus bucket seats, custom centre console, restyled door trims, floors and the boot area. Highlighting the material is lots of polished alloy inserts and strips into the seats and console, whilst the door trims got billet handles and mesh speaker covers. The billet steering wheel also features the leather ring wrapped in matching leather. David’s mate Louie is the man that handled the stitch work to perfection. The new dash facia scored white face Stuart Warner gauges and whilst you can’t see it, there’s a Pioneer sound system fitted. Lifting the bootlid reveals the polished fuel cell set amongst the leather and alloy trim.

Back when David planned the build of the Cortina, the Barra turbo 6 wasn’t an option, and even if it was, chances are he still would have gone with a small block Windsor. CB Performance got the nod to piece together the 364-cube engine nestled into the smoothed-out engine bay. The engine package kicks off with a Dart block filled with Scat crank and rod combo swinging JE pistons, with a Crower cam added to provide a much healthier idle. A pair of AFR heads were bolted onto the block, but not before being fitted with Isky valves and springs and topped with polished rocker covers. The carb of choice is a 750cfm HP Demon that sits on an Edelbrock Air Gap intake to supply ample 98-octane fuel into the tough small block. As you can see, David

went to great lengths to make sure the detailing on and around the engine is as high as the rest of the build.

The Cortina may be a show car right now, but that engine makes a stout 570hp – just the thing for when David does eventually drive it. Backing the engine is a detailed C4 featuring a Dominator converter with a stall speed of 4800rpm, and a B&M shifter. Down the back is a 9-inch diff with a 3.7-geared centre and 31-spline Mark Williams axles. The complete underside and its components are also highly detailed including the driveline, the King Springs that are wrapped around Monroe shocks, the rack and pinion steering and the Wilwood discs and calipers that live inside the highlypolished 19x7 and 20x10-inch Schott Tomahawk rims.

Since its first showing, the Cortina has made a habit of taking home a variety of trophies – usually up against some highlyregarded competition. I’m not sure if it’s been done before, but Dave has been named in the Top Six at MotorEx on three separate occasions – 2018, 2019, and 2022, being just a small part of the 70-odd awards gained to date. Whilst the Cortina has spent its most recent times on the show circuit, that time when David can enjoy the Cortina once again on the street is fast approaching, and you get the feeling that David can’t wait to use every one of those 570-ponies providing the power…

I was asked over the weekend how long I’d been running a car show inside the Hockey Centre. Even I was surprised to find out that this year would be 28-years after my very first show there, back then, called the Hot Car Titles. That was 1994 and I still remember walking into the venue on a Thursday night with my brother to speak with the management about filling the place with modified cars. My requests were met with faces of disbelief as they had never held anything other than Hockey and Volley Ball on their million-dollar rubber floor. And here I was wanting to bring a heap of modified cars through their doors. Thankfully, my

brother Rod and I managed to talk them around, and the first event happened. Sure, there’s been a couple of missed years in those 28, but it’s been the longest running show in the area for sure. There’s a lot of custom car history in this building with many of the countries best cars having been set up here over the years. Amongst the all-star line-up is Fitzy’s FC, Rod Hadfield’s T-coupe and ’55 Chev, Bundy’s Monaro, Howard’s Pioneer Falcon coupe, and more. I’m really proud of what I have managed to bring to the Illawarra area and am fortunate to still be able to bring a highquality show to the area.

After Covid put paid to the 2020/21 events, Killer Rides Live made a big return in 2022 with a host of new cars and some new inclusions.

This year, I managed to fit in more cars than ever before and the variety was as good as I’ve ever been able to assemble, with many cars shown for the first time in the Illawarra region. As you may know, because of limited space, I handpick the line-up of cars and bikes that set-up inside the building. Thankfully, more and more car events are coming back online and with that comes a host of new cars to the scene. Some of those, I managed to bring home with me to be part of Killer Rides Live #4. As usual, there was a mix of street machines, hot rods, drag cars and customs with a sprinkling of modified bikes added for good measure. The floor space was full to capacity with a fine mix show quality builds, and those built to cruise more regularly – catering for all tastes.

I always try to bring something different to Killer Rides Live, something that gives my event a point of difference and this year, there were a few different things that set our event apart.

I always try to bring something different to Killer Rides Live, something that gives my event a point of difference and this year, there were a few different things that set our event apart. The first was to include some cars that were in the build. The spectators that aren’t modified car owners, come to shows and see the polished to perfection finished product, with no idea of what goes into building a top shelf custom vehicle.

I invited some mates to bring along their partially built creations to give a “behind the scenes” look at car building. First up we had Greg “Beach” Ball of Pro-Street Restorations fame, who loaded up the V8 Escort he has been working on. With the polished engine in full view and the underside painted and completed, it gave a big insight into how things come together. Next to him was Brad Leuschner’s A Model Tudor that was fitted up and awaiting paint and finally was Brendan Caunt’s flamed, bagged and tubbed 300C Chrysler sedan proudly showed off its new blown and injected Hemi mountain motor that will soon be frying those tyres on a burnout pad! I decided to put a trophy up for best In the Build, but how do you judge these against each other? Easy. Make it a Peoples Choice trophy. And the people awarded Beachy the In the Build trophy for the V8 Escort.

Speaking of the People’s Choice award, I also had an award chosen by the spectators for the general show entries. Nothing out of the normal there, right. But it’s what the winner was taking home that set tongues wagging. Just because I could, I decided to get a bar fridge, have it wrapped in red with the Killer Rides Live logo and then, just to make this a truly one-off award, had all of the entrants sign the side of it. To ensure the signatures stay, Blake at Graphic Industries finish the job with a clear wrap. It was certainly the “coolest” trophy ever offered and it was won by Steve with the ITSWAR VL Calais.

Another first was the group of BMX bikes that were roped off together. I knew that some of my mates in the scene had a fascination with BMX bikes, but I had no idea about the size of some collections and their worth. Can you believe that some of these bikes have price tags in excess of $15000 each? I bet you won’t walk past a BMX bike for sale at the markets or a swap meet again – I know I won’t. These bikes made a huge impact in the show and were surrounded by people of all ages during the event.

I’m sure this is a section of the event that we will continue to grow.

Of course, it was the cars and custom bikes that were the main stars of the show and the line-up I managed to get together certainly provided the basis for a great event. The mix of show cars, street cars, drag cars, lowriders, customs and custom bikes made the $12 admission price amazing value. The steady flow of spectators through the doors each day ensured that Killer Rides Live has a bright future and plans are already in place to get a whole new entrants list for 2023 with a couple of more surprises added for good measure. Keep an eye on Killer Rides magazine for all the details as they come to hand.

383ci, 665hp VK Group A Replica

In standard form with a single carb 304-cube engine, the Brock VK Group A earned the nick name “The Blue Meanie”. If that’s case, then what name would you give Josh Sergi’s 383ci VK Brock replica?

Nasty? Evil? Demonic? At the end of the day, the two cars are chalk and cheese in comparison. Josh’s much tougher version take the bare bones of Brock’s ‘Holden Executive Friendly” VK and pushes the boundaries much further than the suit-wearing decision-makers at Holden could ever do. Whilst Josh had always wanted to own a replica Brock Commodore, starting from scratch and spending too much time and money to build one wasn’t that appealing, as he had done that before. So he put the feelers out to try to purchase a VK that had already been tubbed and had a Holden stroker engine backed by a Turbo 400 auto. His search didn’t uncover any suitable cars and he even resorted to messaging people on Instagram and Facebook to see if they would sell their cars. Still no luck.

After placing an ad on Facebook, he started getting the usual boofheads messaging him to “open his eyes, they are everywhere” etc and as he was about to pull the ad down, some serious calls starting coming through, including one very interesting car in Queensland that had everything he had wanted. But, this was at the height of the Covid pandemic which restricted travel. But, as fate would have it, Josh’s father-in-law lived just one suburb away from the car and agreed to check it out. After being told that “this was the one”, Josh got back on the phone and done the deal. A week later, the car was delivered and went through the rego process so Josh could start cruising with his mates…

That first cruise with the boys proved to be a difficult one – not for Josh, but for his mates following the VK. You see, the stroker engine in the Commodore ran strictly on methanol – not the greatest fuel fumes to be ingesting or the most legal fuel to be running on the street, so that prompted Josh to speak with Kon at Wollongong Auto Services about a switch to E98 fuel and a new tune.

With that job done, Josh took the VK to the Powercruise Powerplay where everything was fine until the oil pump decided enough was enough and dropped oil pressure. This time, Sam at Westend Performance got the job to rebuild the Holden engine, taking the

cubic capacity out to a more respectable 383-cubes and adding all new internals including a 4-bolt block conversion, forged Scat crank, Callies rods, JE pistons and a mechanical roller cam that could rattle any lose teeth from your gums.

Moving upwards, it gets even better! A pair of COME alloy heads were bolted into place in readiness for the Bain Racing sheet-metal tunnel ram intake that holds up two Holley HP throttle bodies. Once the MSD ignites the E98 fuel, the gases are shown the door via the custom stainless headers and dual 3-inch exhaust system. The new and improved Holden stroker made an impressive 665hp on the Westend Dyno.

Backing the potent Holden ‘big-block’ is a suitably-built Turbo 400 auto that is fronted by a Dominator 5500rpm converter, with gear selections made via a B&M Shifter. A two-piece, three-inch tailshaft sends the power back to a highly modified Borg Warner diff that has 31-spline billet axles ARP studs and TA girdle. The diff is located via an adjustable 4-link with coil-over shocks. Whilst work was happening on the underside, a manual steering rack was added along with the 420mm and 250mm slotted discs with Commodore calipers all being controlled by a Wilwood master cylinder. The wheels of choice are white-centred 20x8 and 20x12 FR Simmons – the rears filling the mini-tubs perfectly.

Body wise, the VK shows its HDT heritage by using the factory original front bar, grille, reverse cowl scoop and rear boot spoiler. There’s no denying that the HDT guru’s got the styling spot on, so why mess with it? The only necessary changes our man Josh did was to allow an opening for the air-cleaners to hang through the bonnet, which doesn’t hurt the visuals one bit! With the transformation almost complete, Josh had Blake at Wicked Reflections do corrections on the paintwork before adding a stage 3 ceramic coating to keep that Formula Blue paint always looking its best.

After being told that “this was the one”, Josh got back on the phone and done the deal.

When the VK came into Josh’s possession, the interior was Calais-spec, but that didn’t even come close to the theme he was after, so after sourcing an original Group A, Josh entrusted Simon at Elite Interiors to not only fit the new trim, but also tidy up other areas as well as designing a new boot space to cover up all the bits you don’t need to see.

You’ll notice that the B&M shifter has been recessed into the factory console and the original gauge cluster has been replaced with individual dials too! It’s details like this that really set some cars apart…

With the remake all done, Josh loaded the VK onto the trailer for the short trip to the Summernats where his focus would be the Tuff Street section. “The car got picked in the PPG Top Paint so I was happy with that!” Josh explained. He went on to add, “People always ask me what’s next for it. I don’t really have any more plans at the moment other than to cruise it around with my family and friends. It’s a great street car. It gets looks everywhere it goes. For now though, I need to finish off some other projects!” Yep, time to get back in the shed Josh…

NSW ALL FORD DAY – 24th JULY 2022 - SYDNEY DRAGWAY WORDS / PICS – PAUL BECK

The day may have kicked off with rain and a thick blanket of fog covering much of Sydney, but when the blue skies appeared, the pit area of Sydney Dragway was wall to wall Ford goodness.

The Ford faithful were out in force, regardless of the ordinary start to proceedings. By the time I arrived at the venue, it was already filling and there was a long line of entrants cars still trying to get into the show and shine area – which was now limited to bitumen areas only due to the amount of wet weather Sydney has endured recently. With that being the case, and cars lined up along the internal roadways, trying to manoeuvre around the venue to be in certain club stands etc made the transition very time consuming. But once in position, the sheer volume of cars on display was nothing short of amazing!

With the fog cleared and bright sunlight shining over the Dragway, the acres of chrome and polished paint work gleamed across every section of the pit area. Rows and rows of pristinely prepared blue oval products were on display with most being part of a Ford-based car club. It was easy to see the club stands too. Apart from a large gathering of people all decked out in their club shirts and jackets, there was an abundance of Club tents, banners and flags!

Being staged by the Combined Ford Clubs of NSW, there was always going to be a huge club presence amongst the 1200-plus cars on show.

With the fog cleared and bright sunlight shining over the Dragway, the acres of chrome and polished paint work gleamed across every section of the pit area.

No matter what year model, body style or group you belonged to or had an interest in, you were always going to find plenty of them in the long list of entrants. As you’d expect, the largest group would have definitely been the GT Clubs that had all kinds of restored and modified examples on display, from the XR right through to the latest, plastic bumper models. There was also plenty for those who are into the smaller Fords that included Cortina’s, Capri’s, Anglia’s, Escorts and more. There were even a couple of Cosworth-powered Sierra’s on show with their high-powered heritage oozing from them. There were plenty of places for you to spend your money too, with lots of traders peddling everything from diecast cars and metal signs to panels, resto parts and more. And if you were after that elusive part to complete your build, chance are you could have found it at the swap meet that was held the previous day.

As you’d expect, the largest group would have definitely been the GT Clubs that had all kinds of restored and modified examples on display.

In amongst the faithfully restored concourse cars were some absolute standout rides, more suited to people like you and me. Peter Chronis’ well-travelled blown XBGT Falcon sedan certainly gained plenty of attention as did the Mustang converted into a Ute, Rubin Nikolovksi’s pearl Orange, turbo big block XC Coupe, the oh-socool rammed Lincoln Continental, the ‘rampback’ styled racecar transporter complete with the stickered up XWGT on board and Lorenzo Copagno’s tough-street XA GTstyle Falcon to name but a few! There were lots of cool ex-racecars in attendance too with the Moffat Coca Cola Mustang and the DJR Green XE amongst the line-up.

By all accounts, the 2022 NSW All Ford Day was a huge success with an amazing array of cars, and lots of spectators coming through the gates to check it all out – even though the weather didn’t look like it was going to be great early on. It all looks great for 2023, so keep the last Sunday of July free for all the Ford fun you can handle…

Paul Cibotto has a garage full of cool street cars including a VN Grp A Commodore, a showcar-quality De Tomaso Pantera and the Haley’s Comet Mustang. None however can match the quarter-pounding Falcon for power and performance. For Paul, it was time to have some serious quarter-mile fun and this wild Falcon was just the car to do it in…

The body itself is a one-off custom two-door, that has a stretched front and a tubbed and winged rear end. The cowled bonnet has been vented to allow as much air into the engine as possible. And because Drag Racing is a game of numbers where lighter is better, all of the glass has been replaced with Lexan and screwed into position. When Allan at Alfa Fibreglass had finished his part on the body, it was time for paint. The first lot of paint that was laid onto the Falcon didn’t cut it for Paul and after a lot of deliberation, he had the guys at Mohr and Son’s lay on the custom Lexus blue. This time, the result was more than Paul could have asked for…

The body sits over a tube chassis that ties into the multipoint roll cage to ensure that if something did go wrong, Paul would be walking away from any scenario. The chassis has been constructed using on the best gear available to keep the Falcon running straight down the middle of the track with each and every pass. In the early days of testing, the team were renown for some big wheels up launches as you can see in this feature. That power come from one of the best in the business – George Haddad. A legend in the Pro-Street scene, George is the man responsible for around 2000hp coming from the 347-cube Windsor. Yes, that’s a lot of power, but it’s also a lot of engine too that pushing along a relatively lightweight Falcon. With the bonnet removed, the single turbo small block comes into full view and you then realise why the Falcon’s nose has had some length added. The engine is dominated by the 94mm Precision CEA turbocharger that feeds the stout small block plenty of air. A Wilson 105mm throttle body sits atop a ported Super Victor intake that has Atomizer 5000cc injectors that get the nod from the Fast XFI

ECU. A pair of Trickflow heads joined the power party and are bolted down onto the Man O War block filled with a forged crank, Howards rods, forged pistons and a custom grind Haddad camshaft. A Tilton oil pump ensures the engine stays well lubricated, from the custom Russell oil pan to the top of the engine. A JW Case Powerglide backs the Ford small block and uses a PTC bolttogether converter to get the maximum amount of power down to the strip, but not before sending it through the carbon fibre tailshaft before stopping at the Strange Ultra 9.5-inch rear end with 3.7-gears. The rear 16x16-inch Weld Beadlock wheels fill the fabricated tubs whilst up front, the 15x3 M/T billet rims offer up little resistance.

Inside, its all business with a mass of roll cage surrounding a purpose built office space - with just the basic necessities added to get Paul down the quarter mile as quickly and as safely as possible. There’s a digital dash just rear of the removable Grant steering wheel that offers Paul all the vital info needed between each run to help the team improve times, along with a Kirkey seat, fire-suppression system, and just for laughs, a sticker of a stereo head unit stuck on the fabricated dash. The flyin’ Falcon has been five years in the making, consuming plenty of dollars in the process.
