From the Desk YOU CAN’T TELL, BUT RIGHT NOW I HAVE A GRIN FROM EAR TO EAR! Why? Well I can’t begin to tell you how excited I am to be back in the Editors chair of my own magazine again. Can you believe it’s been 11-years since I did this for myself? Yep, Kathy and I sold Extreme in 2007 after we launched what we had hoped would be some fun doing our own thing. That fun turned into 7-days a week for four years, but damn we had a good time and made a huge impact in the scene... Fast forward a hand full of years and after doing a hundred different things, I find myself back here doing what I truely love. This time online - the undisputed future of magazine publishing! So what can you expect? Well first up, Killer Rides will be available monthly. Secondly, its free to view! Yep, zero dollars! I know it sounds crazy, but most people get whatever info they need on the internet anyway and most of the time its free! To make sure you never miss an issue, go to our Facebook page and like it! And if you do happen to miss one, the entire back catalogue of issues will be kept on the website... As far as content goes, I want Killer Rides to be all about tough street and strip cars; think of it as a modern day version of Performance Street Car and Extreme rolled into one! Pro-Street, Pro-Touring, Pro-Mod, Hot Rods and ocassionally a custom bike are all welcome in these pages. Expect the unexpected! And don’t forget to click on the Video logo when it appears in the features to see a video of that car and/or event! Enjoy the first issue of Killer Rides Magazine! Please let me know what you think... Paul Beck - Editor

What’s Happening? KILLER RIDES LIVE

The pages of this magazine come to life on Saturday August 11th when Killer Rides Live takes over Moss Vale Showground in the picturesque NSW Southern Highlands. Located just over an hour from Canberra, Wollongong and South/West Sydney, Killer Rides Live is close for all to attend. Killer Rides Live isn’t just a static car show parked on an oval. We have many points of difference starting with a Swap Meet and also including a Car Corral where you can buy or sell a classic or special interest vehicle and a cruise session where spectators can get to see the cars cruising the venue! We have numerous kid’s rides; an amazing array of food stands and traders selling all kinds of great products! Our presentation will be different to what you will expect and then after that, when the sun sets over the venue, we kick off our dual open air Drive-In Cinema’s located at each end of the oval. This is open to both entrants and spectators. The first 200 entries received will get a special Goodies Bag. Entries are just $35 per car and are now open with entry forms and further information found at www.killerrides.com.au

06

Have you ever been reading a magazine and seen something in an ad that caught your eye and thought to yourself, “when I get home I am going to log onto their web site and check it out?” Well those days are over. Killer Rides is completely interactive and that means you can click on any advertisement within the magazine and be taken directly to their website, email or social media pages.

BIG THINGS HAPPENING FOR SUMMERNATS 32! LAST EVER SOUTH COAST NATS

After 25-years of bringing all kinds of custom cars to the tourist town of Moruya on the NSW South Coast, Lee and Deb Pearce have decided that the 2018 event will be the last one they are staging. To be held at Moruya High School on Saturday November 24th, the last event will see a huge turnout of Street Machines, Hot Rods and Custom Cars as well as Bikes and Trucks. The presentation will take place after the show on Saturday night at the local golf club. VIDEO HIGHLIGHTS Don’t miss out on the very last South When you see this logo throughout Coast Nationals event. For further the magazine, make sure you click information, logo onto: on it to see a small video feature on www.southcoastnationals.com.au that car or event.

There have been some big changes planned for Summernats 32. The biggest news so far is that burnouts will now be allowed on the cruise route through Tuff Street in a new lane way purpose built to allow those who hate tyres to do a burnout safely. Dubbed “Skid Row” the new section will keep spectators safe and drivers satisfied. Other notable changes are an alliance with Sunoco fuels through VPW where entrants will be able to purchase fuel onsite without being overcharged by suppliers. And the last piece of news is that there will be over 119 burnout cars assembled to take back the Guiness Book World Record for the most cars doing a simultaneous burnout! Summernats 32 kicks off Jan 3, 2019. www.summernats.com.au

Day

Musuem of Fire, Penrith NSW Sunday, May 29th Words / Pics - Paul Beck

10

Sprawled across the lawns of the Museum of Fire in Penrith, the 45th Annual General Motors Display Day provided a great mix of all things GM. Chevrolet, Pontiac, Buick, Oldsmobile, Cadillac, Oakland, Vauxhall, Opel, Bedford and 48/FJ Holdens. From the very first of each marque to the lastest and greatest supercars, the GM Day had it all. Hosted by the GM Day Committee, the “free for spectators event drew lots of entrants and plenty of interested people who wondered around the grounds either reliving a past life when they once owned cars like those on display, or like dreaming about how cool it would be to own one of these classics. Once again, the 2018 GM Display Day was a huge success - a credit to all involved.

11

Day 01

02

03

04 01 - Rat Rod trucks are big business these days. This one relied on LS-1 technology under the well-worn bonnet. 02 - New Camaro’s are tough - and even tougher with a Harrop blower providing some extra punch! 03 - No GM-based show would be complete without a bunch of ‘59 Cadillac’s. This red convertible was absolutely stunning. 04 - There were more Corvettes in attendance this year than I have seen at previous shows and this Pro-Touring ‘67 was amongst the best there. 05 - Pontiac’s muscle car of the 70’s - the Firebird was well represented at the GM Day. They are still a great looking coupe!

05 06

12

06 - You could just imagine this road-race inspired early Vette punting around the Laguna Seca circuit with that hot small block screaming at redline!

13

01 - Probably the rarest car on display was this 1968 Pontiac Firebird Sprint. Ordered from the factory with a 250ci, 4bbl, overhead cam 6-cylinder engine backed by a floorshifted 3-speed manual box, this “oddity” had a retail price tag of $3047.16 when driven from the showroom floor! Being this rare and still in as new condition, the owner of this Firebird could name his own price for a piece of GM muscle car history. Just 5609 manual versions were made in 1968. I wonder how many were swapped out for V8’s?

01

02

03

04

14

02 - If only Holden saw the foresight to import the Opel range in the late ‘70’s! We could have had a two-door Commodore much sooner! 03 - Got a cupboard full of cash just laying around? You could own a ‘57 Chev Convertible! 04 - Sporting a blown engine, this El Camino really hauls! 05 - High on the list of must own muscle cars, the 70/71 series Camaro are getting hard to find!

RESURRECTION DEAN & KAREN KENNEDY - LH Torana WORDS / PICS - Paul Beck

Found on eBay and bought back from near death, Dean and Karen Kennedy’s Torana puts the “Street” back into Pro-Street!

20

21

Melting the tyres is effortless when your packing 600-odd blown ponies in the top paddock!

22

We’ve all seen the ads on eBay and Gumtree stating that the project car on offer was rust free, only to travel hours to find out what they meant to say was “rust for free”! Dean Kennedy decided to take a chance and take the relatively short drive from the Shoalhaven region to Canberra to check out an LH Torana that had been advertised. To his complete surprise, the stock as a rock, one-owner sixpack Torana was rust free but was sporting more hits than Mike Tyson’s opponents. With the newly purchased Torana secured to the trailer, Dean grinned from ear to ear as he pulled away from the previous owners’ house enroute to its new home. With a firm plan in mind, Dean got his hands dirty by minitubbing the rear end, smoothing out the engine bay and creating a custom dash. With the sheet metal working tools still in hand, Dean took to the ageing metal and prepared the body for paint by removing years of small damage and all the badges for a much smoother look. From that point on, the boys at 2SUS Custom Resprays took over laying on the Candy Teal colour.

OWNER: Dean & Karen Kennedy VEHICLE: 1974 LH Torana ENGINE: 383ci Chev small block built by Scott Sandford, power-pack heads, Crane blower cam, forged SRP pistons, Scat forged stroker crank, Scat rods, high-volume oil pump, Moroso sump, The Blower Shop 6/71 blower, twin 750 Holleys, Magneto, CRS headrs. POWER: 600hp TRANS: Turbo 350 auto built by Pro-Trans, 3000rpm converter, B&M shifter. DIFF: Narrowed 9-inch diff, 3.50-gears. Built by Diff Technics. WHEELS: 15x4 & 15x10 Centerline Qualifiers SUSPENSION: Front: King Springs and shocks. Rear: Mini-tubbed, Strange coil-overs. BRAKES: Front: UPC Discs with Ford Calipers Rear: Falcon disc, V8 Torana master cylinder. COLOUR: Candy Teal BUILD TIME: 2-1/2 years. THANKS TO: Scott Sandford for parts and help; 2SUS Custom Resprays for the excellent work; Ben at Chasme Trim for the interior; Karen for putting up with lots of swearing during the build and for cleaning the car; and Rusty my shed dog for the company...

23

It’s hard to ignore the engine – or at least the top section of it! Dean always wanted a blown street car and knew that the Torana was going to get a small block Chev with a big blower on it no matter what. That happened sooner than he thought after good mate Scott Stanford – himself the owner of a tough Torana, decided to sell Dean the 383ci stroker small block that once powered his pro-street LX Hatch. Providing the fuel to the fire is a pair of 750cfm Holley’s that push the air and premium unleaded fuel through the 6/71 Blower Shop pump to the waiting engine below. The reworked power-pack heads top the block that features a Crane blower cam, forged SRP pistons and a crank and rod combo from Scat. Ample spark is provided by the magneto and after the big bang takes place, the gases are shown the door via a pair of CRS headers. Power output is an impressive 600hp! A ‘built by Protrans” Turbo 350 box backs the small block and is full of top-shelf gear designed to handle anything Dean and his 383 can throw at it. The narrowed 9-inch diff, once again removed from Scott’s Hatch, features 3.50-gears and rounds out a driveline that should prove to be ultra-reliable for what Dean has planned – and that’s plenty of street cruising!

24

25

With Scott’s hatch relieved of its driveline, which was now bolted into its new home, Dean obviously thought “why stop there!”. The front seats also made the transition into Dean’s sedan which meant the interior was now the focus of his attention. With the front seats sorted, Dean left the rest of the interior up to Ben at Chasme Trimming to cover in the same cream leather and pattern as the VL Commodore Scheel buckets already in place. Dean had already built the custom dash and planned to fill it with Auto Meter gauges after Ben weaved his magic with the leather.

138 DUNSTERS LANE, CROOM, NSW 2527 20-minutes South of Wollongong

With Scott’s hatch relieved of its driveline, which was now bolted into its new home, Dean obviously thought “why stop there!”. Dean and Karen invested two and a half years and around $70,000 into creating their own take on the humble Torana. It was always going to be a slick streeter capable of holding its own on the car show scene – and the accolades the Torana has already scored at several shows has proved that point. For now, Dean and Karen plan to cruise the Torana as much as they possibly can…

HOLDEN s l a n o i t Na May 5th 2018 - Heathcote Park Raceway

PICS - LAUREN WHITTON, XPOSED PHOTOGRAPHY WORDS - PAUL BECK

28

All roads lead to country Victoria’s Heathcote Park Raceway for the staging of the 2018 Holden Nationals. The rules are few and it was a simple case of “run what ya brung” as long as it was housed in a Holden/GM chassis!

29

The annual Holden Nationals Drag Meet at Heathcote Park Raceway is one of the most anticipated events on the ‘Holden Only event calendar. The comradery around the brand bought together a huge range of street and strip vehicles to battle it out in a number of DYO Brackets. Under the guidance of event promoter Todd Foley, the Holden Nationals has grown from strength to strength with over 150 cars travelling from across the country to take part in the event. Each driver has three chances to hit the track to get some laps and data under their belts and to sort out a dial-in before the racing kicked off. Forget handicaps, the Holden Nationals is purely heads-up. At the end of the race, the driver who gets closest to their dial-in without going quicker, moves onto the next round. The last driver smiling at the end of the track will be the Holden Nationals Champion. Simple... The racing was hard-fought with every driver taking their cars to the limit in search of the ultimate bragging rights associated from being crowned the winner. If you’re a Holden fan, make sure you head down to Heathcote Park raceway next year to be part of the 2019 Holden Nationals. We will see you there!

PAYS OFF! ROB BOSILKOVSKI - 1970 FORD CAPRI

WORDS / PICS - Paul Beck

36

Rob Bosilkovski had wanted his mate’s Capri for a long time but kept coming up against the “sorry, it’s not for sale” line. Now, at this point you can either walk away and accept it, or put the pressure on and hope the owner cracks…

37

Obviously, Rob won out in this battle due to persevering with his requests to take the Capri off the then owners hands. In no time at all, the Capri was in Robs garage and his name was on the rego papers! The Capri was already a tough street car – which is what gained Rob’s attention in the first place. It was clean, tidy and had a stout driveline already installed. Justifying his purchase, Rob told us that “I’d always loved the body style of the Capri and that engine bay is made for a V8!” Buying an already built car does have its advantages – especially if that car is everything you’ve been looking for in a new ride. Sure, you could save some dollars over building your own from scratch but for me, (and probably Rob too) laying down the bucks on something that is in one piece, registered and as tough as hell meant that there’s no need to rely on others for parts and/or services to happen before you get to cruise the streets. We’ve all been down that road and it can be very frustrating. Not for our man Rob though. He was behind the wheel before you could say “what’s it go like?” That was some five years ago now, and although the Capri may look very similar to the way it was when Rob jumped into the driver’s seat, there’s been many fundamental changes made to make this street and strip Capri much more suited to both uses.

The original power-plant that come with the Capri is long gone. In its place sits a BK Race Engines built Windsor based small block of big block proportions.

38

UNDER THE BONNET

Rob wanted a tough but reliable aspirated engine package and had heard of Billy’s reputation. After a lengthy discussion about the Capri’s intended use, Billy came up with a package that ticks all the boxes. Now sporting 427-cubic inches, the stretched small block started life as a Dart Race block that quickly consumed more top-shelf products than most speed shops carry. A steel Scat crank spins Eagle rods and Diamond Racing pistons while the Bullet camshaft provides a rumble that screams “don’t mess with me”. A pair of alloy Kaase C400 heads top the stout bottom end with a manifold from the same company fill the gap between them. Providing plenty of 98-octane fuel into the fire is a job left up to a single 1000-cfm APD Enforcer carby. After the spark ignites thanks to the MSD branded ignition system, the gases are shown the door via a pair of John Shavkulovich fabricated custom headers that unwind into an exhaust system built by good mate Rick Sofro. So how much power does the big cube small block make? 500? Nope. 600? Guess again… Try 700 tough but streetable ponies on pump fuel and in aspirated form. When you combine that figure with the cars weight you get a fun factor of 17 out of 10! Backing the Windsor is a ATi Performance 2-speed ‘Glide built by Norm at Northmead Auto’s. Internally, the box was built to handle more power than Rob is currently running through it with only the best parts used inside the SFI certified ATi Super case. A Neil Chance converter with a stall speed of 5500rpm fronts the killer box. As you’d expect there’s a nineinch diff out the back that has been severely narrowed and filled with Mark Williams axles and centre. As you can see, the new and improved driveline is all business…

COLOUR ME CRAZY

When you’re talking colours for a tough street car, a custom olive green isn’t one that instantly comes to mind. The previous owner and builder of the Capri, Mark Harvey owned Acclaim Smash Repairs and came up with this unique blend for the Capri called Harrob Green. In different light, the colour changes dramatically and the pearl in the Spies Hecker colour becomes more evident. Mark laid the custom colour down after the front and rear guards were massaged for better clearance, the engine bay smoothed out and the fibreglass reverse cowl bonnet added. The silver stripes break up the abundance of green nicely.

Wollongong is home to some tough street cars and when you get a few of them together to cruise the streets, like Rob and his mates do, the rumble from all that horsepower is enough to send little kids into hiding and old people rushing to secure their false teeth.

LIFE ON THE INSIDE…

A pro-street car needs a purposeful interior and Rob’s Capri fits the bill perfectly. The front seats are ex-Subaru WRX Recaro items and form the bulk of the material found on the inside of the Capri. The carpet and headlining make up the remainder of the stitch work. The door trims and entire rear passenger area now sport custom tin work and lets even the least interested person who peers inside, that this Capri means business! The multi-point cage is mild steel and ANDRA approved and the custom dash facia is now host to many necessary AutoMeter dials and switches. A B&M Pro-stick shifter completes the “race ready” insides.

STREET? STRIP? WHY NOT BOTH?

“I love being able to drive the Capri on the street and at the moment, that’s what I plan to do for a while. I have raced the car and run 9’s at Sydney Dragway but for now I am content hitting the road with my mates in their cars”, Rob explained. If (when?) Rob decides to head back for another hit on the quarter, it’s not a huge job to get it prepped for some action. In the five years that Rob has owned the Capri, it’s been a continuous build to improve the Capri in all area’s – not just in the power department. Future plans could include some fuel injection, a possible colour change and maybe some new wheels. For now though, Rob is very happy with how the Capri has progressed.

Sometimes you can get lucky when importing a vehicle from the US - sometimes you don’t. But if you take the gamble and lay down the bucks on what appears to be a bargain without actually seeing the vehicle for yourself, the risk factor goes through the roof. Once the car arrives, sending it back because it’s not what you expected is not an option, so you can imagine how nervous Peter Violaris and Jim Raptis were when their new purchase was due to arrive from its journey. Peter and Jim work hard and play even harder. During the day, they control Go Logistics – a courier company that sees a fleet of almost 100 Vans coming and going from their Sydney warehouse. Keeping that on track has both the boys run off their feet day in, day out. So when the two need some time out from their work, they play cars – tough cars like this Dodge Dart. When the Dart arrived from Whiteland, Indiana, the boys were pleasantly surprised. The car seemed to be everything they were promised – at least visually…

HITTIN’ THE BLACKTOP

Both Peter and Jim enjoy driving their cars on the limit so it’s no surprise to know it wasn’t long before the Dart made its quarter-mile debut on Australian shores. Unfortunately, it was short lived with the transmission deciding it wasn’t up to the task of handling the punishment the pumped big block was handing out. The Torqueflite trans was ripped from its mounts and sent direct to Craig’s Automatics where the well-worn internals were junked in favour of much tougher parts that are capable of not only dealing with the engine’s power, but also Peter and Jim’s driving habits. A trans-brake was added to the mix to help with quarter mile times, with a 3200rpm converter the final piece of the transmission puzzle. Complimenting the new and improved trans is the factory Dana 60 fitted with 4.11-gears and Moser axles.

THE POWER AND THE PASSION

One of the reasons the Dart stood out for the work-mates was the fact that it was sporting a blown 496ci big block engine. The Vortech S1 blower feeds the 440ci stroker through a single “blowthrough” 950cfm Demon carb. Boost is a “safe” 6-psi. Stretching the cubic capacity is a forged crank and h-beam rod combination that spins Diamond pistons inside the prepped block. The cam produces an idle that can only be described as menacing… From the reworked factory heads to the Miloden sump and MSD/ICE ignition system, this big block produces the goods to the tune of low 10-sec quarters…so far!

Even though the factory sheet metal is in pretty good shape for its age, the boys took a tongue-in-cheek approach to trying to “hide” an imperfection on the lower quarter

SUSPENDED SENTENCE

As with any pro-street styled car, the suspension set up doesn’t need to possess the same amount of finesse as a V8 Supercar. Call it primitive if you like but if it works, why re-invent it? The original torsion-bar front end has been equipped with 90/10 shocks and ’78 Lincoln disc’s. The rear-end retains the leaf-springs which work in with the Calvert adjustable shocks to help with the hard launches when the green bulb flashes. Like the opposite end, the rear brakes are also disc from a ’78 Lincoln. Whilst the Dart’s body may never win a concourse award, that’s just fine with Peter and Jim. Even though the factory sheet metal is in pretty good shape for its age, the boys took a tongue-in-cheek approach to trying to “hide” an imperfection on the lower quarter panel. Over-sized band aids do the job nicely on the factory yellow paint. Whilst it’s not quite as stock as the body, the interior still oozes that late 60’s style with black vinyl covering the rear seat and door trims and headlining. The non-factory appointed items include sporty high-back front seats, Pioneer stereo, an array of more accurate AutoMeter gauges and a console mounted B&M shifter. The boys plan to get the Dart on the street and onto the track as much as time allows. The ultimate goal is to dip into the 9-sec zone without too many changes. When that happens, they may turn their attention to the ’67 Cuda parked beside the Dart or maybe the new toy that is making its way across the ocean at the moment. Stay tuned for more…

In the Hot Seat With Chic Henry - Summernats Founder and Hard-core Car Guy! I make no secret about loving tough, high performance street cars. Make no mistake, I love all sorts of cars, but in the end, American muscle cars are what really push my start button. In my early high school years I noticed any hotted up street cars with one particular FJ roaring up the hill past my house every afternoon about 5 o’clock when the guy finished work. Mum and Dad were always carrying on about him but I thought it was terrific hearing the sound of that screaming side plate as he hit third gear. Those days I spent most of my spare time at the pool or the beach, but I’d pick up the sound of high performance engines and I loved 57 Chevys and also remember an emerald green and gold Studebaker Hawk. When I did my apprenticeship in the Army as a blacksmith I mostly thought about surfing and girls, but I noted my mates with hot streeters so I guess it was only a matter of time before I’d own something similar.. Gradually I picked up on high performance stuff by reading magazines, especially Car Craft, getting to know the local hot car dudes and hanging around the local speed shops. I had a nice red and white 1964 EH Holden with wide chromies, lowered two inches, twin carbies and extractors and good enough to park next to the cool cars at the donut and coffee shops on a Friday night in Sydney. I then got attracted to an emerald green VE Valiant and that’s when the bottomless pit appeared where I threw

52

flat tappet cam, 750 double pumper, Zoom clutch and pressure plate and a close ratio Muncie four speed. It was an absolute pig to drive, but it felt and sounded right and looked the part too with the back jacked up to take the 10 inch Ansen sprints on the back.. I bought books such as “How to hot rod small block chevys” and another “How to” book on Holley carbies. I read about why single plane manifolds were more efficient than dual plane ones for high revs and at one time had a cross ram fitted and read about the manifold designed by the legendary Smoky Yunick who designed the Smokey-ram manifold. I wanted to understand all about camshaft lift, duration and overlap. I listened to the Ford freaks talking about the Phase 3 GT and 9” rear ends and 2V versus 4V heads. I noticed that Chrysler dominated NASCAR and the blown Chrysler Hemi engine was big time at the drags. I absorbed every bloody thing about American muscle. GTO’s and 429 Shelby Mustangs and Ford Thunderbolts with aluminium fenders. At one time I had the chance to buy a genuine Plymouth Ramcharger but the guy wanted silly money.

an aspect i created to satisfy my personal interest was tuff street...

money and that damn pit is still there today out in my garage in Canberra. In 1969 I got the drag racing bug and the Val ran respectable low 13’s for what it was, but I was never attracted to build it or anything else into a purpose-built drag car. Maybe it was the attraction of feeling the power on the street because those days, every green light often meant another race. I always had US magazines and Aussie ones too, but it was the American muscle that grabbed me and pretty soon I owned a ’57 Chevy Belair. Now I really had the chance to experience American muscle and after countless hours and $$ and even being flat-towed home from Surfers Paradise Raceway with broken 327, I ended up with a stout 350 small block. Big aftermarket heads, the biggest Isky

But then the 1962 Impala Supersports appeared and here was my chance to step into the world of big cubic inches. Yahoo!! Now we’re talking. Unfortunately the original engine and box was missing and it turned out that it was a genuine twin four 409 fourspeed model, but that stuff was nowhere to be found. No problem, I was never fully familiar with the value of keeping such a car in its original form. In goes a 427 big block with a heavy duty 727 torqueflite push-button auto mated up. A couple of broken diffs and axles and in goes the 9” Ford rear end with the suspension being made better with an extra upper control arm for traction and a Watts linkage to keep the body and suspension nicely in line on corners.

53

In the Hot Seat Skip a few years and a few more engines including a 482 with 14:1 compression. It was a tough lesson learning that it would only ever run successfully on 140 octane fuel and it eventually let go when a stellite valve seat fell out of one of the Mondello heads and scattered though the engine absolutely destroying it. Not so smart revving the rings out of it with no rev limiter fitted. There sure are some painfully expensive lessons to learn. A few more engines in and out and the 62 now houses a 540 Ultra Street from Shafiroff, the same torqueflite auto and 9” rear. It still kicks arse thanks to a 1050 Dominator on top to mix the fuel and ICE to provide the sparks. Lots of people know I’ve had it for 40 years and that I didn’t build it to look at it. Just before the 30th Summernats, I was having some minor problems that were giving me major headaches in that I couldn’t identify the causes. One was wiring and because I’d rearranged some things, I lost power altogether. After going back to where I’d started by reversing everything I’d done, I figured it out. Wiring is such a nightmare. Then it sprung a water leak but where the hell from. I was about to burn the bastard when my daughter Angela turned

54

up with some Summernats judges who then made straight for my beer fridge. Mark Hayes, owner of possibly the toughest street Torana in the country points to some green water then asked for a 9/16th ringy. Tightened up the water pump and no water leak. I’d had the engine out and how that hell hadn’t I noticed it wasn’t tight. What was left then was to fire it up, check for no leaks, load everyone into the car and with Ang watching me back out, we went for a lap of the block. It was actually several blocks and a straight section of road slightly uphill, no cars in sight at the rear and in front and in a few seconds we’re doing a bit over 6 grand in top. With 4:11 gears in the rear and some mental maths you can gather what speed we were probably doing and it was then that we could all feel the torque of the big block powering us up that hill. It’s the impressive torque that big cube engines deliver and I love it and when we arrived back home, it seems my passengers thought so too. It’s crazy I know, but at 71 I still love this stuff. You probably know that I ran the Summernats for about 25 years. Over the time, I got so much enjoyment about seeing so many people come to my Horsepower Party to

After all these years, my love of tough cars is still the same. I can park my 62 outside a shop or on a servo drive way and as I walk towards it I think, “Shit I love that car”

simply enjoy themselves in so many ways. An aspect I created to satisfy my personal interest was Tuff Street where you could find the crankiest looking and sounding cars that were different to the Burnout Masters cars, although I must identify one outstanding burnout car and that was the 71 Chevelle belonging to Dave Cufone. Every time it came to the line and he nailed it, the whole place shook. Man was that some angry muther. Sadly it is no more having been caught in a semi-trailer fire on the way to Perth for a burnout comp. What a damn tragedy. After all these years, my love of tough cars is still the same. I can park my 62 outside a shop or on a servo driveway and as I walk towards it I think, “Shit I love that car” and when I start it and move off and think about how it feels when I do find some clear space and give it a big serve, I love it even more. I guess there are plenty of guys and girls who share the same high performance street passion. Two Summernats ago I did something I’ve never been able to do before simply because I was too busy running the Event. On Thursday morning Day#1 I drove it in the City Cruise. Friday morning the Go-who on the Burnout Track and

Saturday morning, the driving skill events on the Main Arena then a few laps around in the Supercruise Saturday night with my daughter Georgia having her first drive. Sunday though was the highlight. Just after presenting the Grand Champion with an amazing sword (I wish I still owned that one in my collection), I was first out on the track at the beginning of the Burnout Finals and destroyed a brand new set of 295-50-15’s. Stopped about 10mil from the safety fence and with my granddaughter Lauren, jumped out to strike a pose at the front and then drove off. Later that afternoon, I drove home, locked up the garage, went inside feeling pretty damn pleased with myself. The reality is, I enjoy any car that someone has built well and when I see someone stand there, or sitting, or driving their pride and joy, I love what we all do but in the end, tough, angry street cars are my greatest love. Keep doing it on the street. Chic

CLINT ROWLES - 1963 FALCON WORDS / PICS - Paul Beck

Clint Rowles didn’t have to drive to far to pick up this early Falcon sedan. In fact, he didn’t drive at all! A leisurely stroll to his neighbours’ house five doors down the road, resulted in an exchange of ‘cash for car’ and Clint finding himself pushing the Falcon into his shed for what would kick start a four-year build. Clint had known about the Falcon for some time and after a few years of pestering the then owner, the deal was done when the owner was moving house and couldn’t take the Falcon with him. A fitter and machinist by trade, Clint is a hands-on type of guy and had the Falcon down to its bare bones in no time at all. Having previously built an XM and XY Falcon, Clint was aware of the pitfalls surrounding the Aussie Ford and made plans to correct what Ford couldn’t right from the offset.

We’ve all been in the position where we’ve had to travel across the country to check out the next project car only to find out it was half the car the owner described to you and the photo’s they sent you were taken 10-years earlier. But sometimes your next project car can be right under your nose!

56

57

BITS OF THIS, BITS OF THAT…

Clint knew that this time, the Falcon was going to emerge with more power and a greater street appeal than ever before. The stock-spec Windsor was given the flick in favour of a tough as nails 347-cube BOSS engine. Meticulously put together by Dennis at K&D Automotive, the engine is chock full of hi-po gear that works together to give the Falcon much more power than Ford had ever intended. Not only does the engine perform, but it also looks the part in the Falcon’s reworked engine bay that now features flat inner guards and chassis strengthening bars. Achieving that smooth look in a Falcon engine bay is not an easy proposition. Those ugly strut towers had to go – not just for looks but also because they hinder how much room is available to run the custom headers attached to the small block. Removing them meant that the factory front end also had to go. Clint fixed that problem by installing a Mitsubishi L300 cross-member mated to HZ drop stub axles, a VH Commodore rack and pinion mated to an XY Falcon column. A pair of Lovells springs complete the new front end combo. Backing the 347 is a TCI C4 auto-box purpose built for this application. Using a TCI adapter and 4500rpm TCI converter, the engine and trans were soon joined as one, but not before the box scored a full manual, reverse pattern shift kit, trans-brake and B&M shifter. Rounding out the driveline trio is a sheet-metal 9-inch diff filled with a full-spooled Strange centre, 4.11-gears and 35-spline Mark Williams axles. With all this good gear fitted, the driveline in the Falcon is the Arnold Schwarzenegger of Ford combinations. You want tough, you got it!

With all this good gear fitted, the driveline in the Falcon is the Arnold Schwarzenegger of Ford combinations. You want tough, you got it!

STAGE ONE

INTERNAL EXAMINATION

The Falcon was a complete original car when Clint became its new owner and the speedo showed just 230,000 miles. The engine wasn’t running, but Clint had plans for that tired old six-pack. Those plans included reefing it from its mounts and putting it in the “never to be used again” pile of parts. In its first reincarnation, Clint added a stock Windsor V8 combo, painted the body flat black, added some pinstriping and dropped the car on its arse. Clint cruised the Falcon in this guise for a while before the desire to have more power and more style took over. Once again, the Falcon was back in the shed and relieved of all its gear.

58

In stark contrast to the body colours, the interior has been given a more-subtle makeover by X-Trim. Tan leather now covers the bench seats, door trims and headlining – highlighting the painted dash and door tops even further. An array of AutoMeter gauges keep Clint informed and a billet steering wheel tops the later model Falcon column. There’s a Bluetooth inspired sound system fitted, but I reckon the sound coming from that potent small block would be better music to listen too…

Filmed on a private road under controlled circumstances...

59

THE BODY BEAUTIFUL

Clint paint stripped the body and found the factory sheet-metal to be 100% rust free with just a couple of small imperfections to fix. It was at this point that Clint knew he had hit the jackpot with this Falcon! When you stumble across a body this good, you don’t mess with it…well not too much anyway. Clint removed the factory fitted badges and mouldings and added a unique scoop to the body that pushed air direct into the heart of that killer Boss engine. Matt McDonald was given the task of preparing the body and making sure that when the new colour went on, the Falcon’s panels were straighter than a High Court judge! With the panel beating tools now put away, the smoothed-out Falcon was handed over to Jessie Iturrieta to lay on the new colour. Long gone was the flat black and pin-striping combination. Clint’s desire to have something that stood out certainly became a reality with the PPG Orange Glow and Morning Frost White now adorning the sedan. Combined with the re-chromed bumpers, grille and light surrounds, the colour really makes a statement!

Clint loves to drive the Falcon – that’s what it was built for! In fact, he likes to drive it so much that he has a milder engine in the shed that he swaps over in around four hours when the call comes for a cruise to Queensland for Cooly Rocks or for a trip down the Hume to Phillip Island for the Custom Nationals. How’s that for dedication! So, what’s in store for the Falcon? Any more changes? “If I was to do the car again, I would go down the Pro-Street road with it, but that would also involve a change to smaller brakes. At this stage though, I am considering putting it on the market to fund the next project.” Clint explained. If this build is any indication, I can’t wait to see what the next one is…

King

OF THE ROAD DANNY XUEREB - 1957 CHEV BELAIR

WORDS / PICS - Paul Beck

Get any group of hardcore car lovers together and ask them what their Top 5 street cars of all time was and I guarantee the ’57 Chev will be in there somewhere…

64

Danny Xuereb was like so many others before him. He found a deep-seated passion for the ’57 Chev that saw him go on the search for a suitable project car. Time and time again, Danny found cars that were reportedly great cars, only to find that the owners idea of great was a long way from where his idea of great was. Just when things were looking dire, Danny lucked onto an original four-door pillared Belair – a reasonably rare car that was owned by John Cain, a name synonymous with all things classic American. After asking around, Danny was assured by those in the know, that John could be trusted, and so armed with this new info, bought the Belair sight unseen. Danny knew the dangers associated with doing this, but his fears were put to rest when the Chev rocked up on his doorstep. It was everything John told him it was. The body was fairly solid, but did need quite a bit of love to make it good enough that Danny was happy to cruise it regularly.

65

“From the drivers seat, you’d have to have pretty bad eyesight not to see the twin Demon carbs and polished BDS scoop jutting from the bonnet!”

Even though Danny had the engine tamed down a little for more reliable street use, he is still confident that the engine is producing around 1000hp on premium pump fuel. Sure he dropped a little power from what it initially was, but the Chev’s demeanor is such that the residents of the local retirement village could take turns of driving each other to bingo in it. Backing the potent big block is an Al’s Race Glides built turbo 400. Featuring a 3000rpm Dominator converter, a custom valve body and custom reverse shaft, the box is built to last with a power handling rating of around 1500hp. Gear selections are made via a B&M shifter.

The 6/71 Weiand blower and 850dp Demon carbs is obviously the hero of the engine build and one that dominates the view when the bonnet is lifted, but there’s so much more to this engine than what first meets the eye. The four-bolt block has been prepped in the usual fashion before taking a host of high-end components on board. The parts list includes a Scat crank and rod combo; Probe 8.1 blower pistons wrapped in ACL rings; and a Camtech roller cam. In fact, the second Camtech cam fitted to this engine as the initial build featured a wilder version that just made the car a pig to drive on the street regularly. The new cam is milder but still delivers great power right through the rev range.

67

Inside, it’s a mix of factory original and custom streetcar. The seats and door trims are reproduction Belair style, whilst the factory US-spec dash has been converted from left to right whilst Angelo was taking care of the body. Gone though are the original circa ’57 gauges which have made way for more stylish Dakota Digital items. The upgrades didn’t end there with a billet steering column replacing the original shaft and gearshift unit, with a billet steering wheel topping the new column. The downsized wheel makes driving the ’57 more like a later model car. The dash now features a trick alloy trim where the GM cast item once belonged.

The interior remake was a combined effort between Angelo, All Trim and Danchuk who supplied the interior trim from the USA.

69

It’s taken some seven years to get the ’57 to the point where it is today. There’s been the usual problems, plenty of swearing, plenty of laughs and plenty of frustrating times too. But when you have the right people involved, things just happen and have a way of working themselves out. Danny is under no illusions that without the help of Angelo and Trudy at Cool Customs, his Belair beauty would probably be half the car is has turned out to be. For that, he will forever be greatful. As with any self respecting car nut, Danny has a few plans up his sleeve including the possibility of a new blown engine, this time sporting around 632ci to get even more horsepower without sacrificing reliability. Apart from that, Danny says he is wrapped with the car. “As you see the car now, that was my vision seven years ago when I bought it. Its perfect!” Say no more…

Big and little wheel combo? Check. Blower and Twin carbs? Check. Rego and street driven? Check. Yep, this ’57 is King of the road…

Chev’s “W” engine began its life in 1958 as a 348ci. By the early 60’s it had increased to 409ci and sported dual four-barrel carbs and 425hp! These gems are getting hard to find but are well worth the hunt. There’s lots of aftermarket gear available too!

ENGINE

SWAPS

When considering an engine swap, why stick with what’s considered normal, when theres a whole host of engine options out there that could take your project car to the next level.

Thinking outside the square is a risky business when building a new car. If you’re worried about what people think about your new project and your use of certain components, you’ll probably play it safe and keep it all one make. But if you’re like me and don’t care what people think, the sky is the limit. Old school or new school, there’s plenty of options on offer to transform your ride from zero to hero in just two engine mounts. Hot Rodders have been exploring the possibilities for years. With just a pair of chassis rails to deal with, slotting in any engine regardless of brand, size or induction was almost too easy. For the Post ‘48 crowd, there’s much more to consider - mainly the engine bay width and the bonnet line. If you’re thinking about a big block, you really need to ensure there’s room to run the headers without cutting up the inner guards. Owners of Falcon’s will always run into hassles with the strut towers taking up valuable space for free flowing headers. There are ways around this though and as car crafters, we will always find a way to make things fit. The engine and engine bay is probably the most important part, and most anticipated part of any car build. With that in mind, there’s no prouder moment for a car owner than when he lifts the lid on his new ride to a group of like- minded people huddled around the front of the car waiting to see the power plant of choice. Can you imagine the reaction when something completely left of field is revealed? If this sounds like you, read on...

The KAASE Boss Nine engine is a direct copy of Ford’s BOSS 429, though KAASE offers a variety of sizes much larger than this along with your choice of induction. Is this the ultimate Ford replacement engine?

Those into Mopar’s have several choices too. First up is the desirable V10 Viper engine. Big cubes, big torque and big in size! Lots of these engines available for very reasonable prices.

The next is a full aluminium 572ci Hemi! Considered by many as the ultimate V8 engine combo. You can buy these new as crate engines starting at 426ci.

Then there’s the new Hemi - the Gen 3. Commonly found in Chrysler’s 300C, these dualplug engines make great power and look old-school when done right...

In the Chev performance engine world, nothing screams horsepower more than a pair of Arias “Hemistyle” heads bolted to a stout small block! If you need to stick with a factory Chev engine, but need more in the performance stakes and also visually, then you can’t go past a pair of Arias heads! There’s no need to scour the swap meets either, you can still buy these new!

If late model Ford engines are more your thing, you can choose between the 5.4-litre modular engine and even the newer 5.0-litre Coyote engine. Both are available new as crate engines, though there are some floating around second hand if dollars are limited. Mostly, these engines are aspirated and EFI but if money isn’t a worry, why not order a new one fitted with an underbonnet supercharger? Whilst this engine may look at home in a Ferrari, it’s actually a factoryspec Chev engine! It’s an LT-5 full alloy, overhead cam small block designed by Lotus and used in the ZR-1 Corvettes. Its distinctive injection and plug location make this engine a standout! These engines make great power and are relatively easy to get hold of. And as you can see with this twin-turbo version, they can look awesome in any engine bay. Google LT-5 Engine and consider one for your next ride!

PORTABLE LIGHTING You could have 5000-watts of lighting built into the roof of your garage, but what good is that when you are working inside a wheel arch or under the dash? Portable lighting can be placed wherever you need it and will save the battery on your mobile phone too!

Things You Need

...IN THE GARAGE

If you’re a hands-on sort of guy, you’re going to need the necessary gear in your garage to tackle any job on your car no matter how big or small... Chances are that if you’re building a new car or maintaining an existing one, you’ll have at least a minimum amount of tools in your garage to see you through. But if you are serious about doing the majority of the work yourself at home you are going to need some serious equipment. What we have listed here are items that any self-respecting car guy or girl would love to have set up in their home garage. Let us know what else you would include in your dream garage...

78

GO-JACKS Moving a car with no driveline and no steering used to be a massive head-ache, but with a quartet of Go-Jacks at your disposal moving your project around is almost too easy. Every home garage and professional workshop should have a set!

FULLY STOCKED TOOL CHEST No matter how many tools you have spread across the garage floor, you’ll always need more. There are plenty of companies out there that can supply a fully-equiped tool chest that has more tools than you’ll probably ever need - until you need it. This should be the first purchase when setting up your home garage.

CAR HOIST Forget about a hoist if you have an older home with a single car garage - there’s simply not enough head room to allow it. But, if you’ve got the space, a hoist will be the best investment you’ll ever make in regards to your garage. The days of lying flat on your back working on the undercarriage will be over for ever. A definite 10/10 investment...

AIR COMPRESSOR There’s a host of airpowered tools that will make life so much easier when tackling certain jobs. But they are no good without a good quality compressor to supply the wind. When choosing the correct capacity, work out what size you need and then get the next one up. Better to have more power than you need!

AXLE STANDS Safety should always be the main concern when working on your car. Never take any chances when working under your car. You should always buy the best quality axle stands you can afford and always make sure the ground is level.

ENGINE HOIST Even though they do take up a bit of space (even the fold up versions), an engine hoist is a must have when building your dream car. We’ve all been in the situation where we’ve had to have the engine in and out of the bay several times to check clearances etc. When buying an engine hoist, make sure you grab the necessary accessories too such as a balance bar and either straps or high-quality chain to attach to the engine to make the lift.

Things You Need

continued...

LOW TROLLEY JACK It goes without saying that one necessary item for your garage is a trolley jack - not your cheapy generic version, but one that is suitable for lowered cars. They cost more but save a lot of hassle if your car is lower than the factory intended.

FULLY STOCKED FRIDGE If you’re intending on spending plenty of time in the garage - especially during the summer months, keep hydrated with your favourite beverage direct from your shed fridge. The bonus is that the wife won’t be complaining about walking through the house with dirty shoes...

ENGINE STAND Keep your engine off the floor with a sturdy engine stand. Make sure the one you buy can handle the weight of a big block and you’ll be fine...

Factory Options ZB COMMODORE RS SPORTWAGON & CALAIS V I went into these road tests with an open mind. Sure, I had read endless reviews by keyboard warriors that couldn’t get passed the fact that Holden had ditched the V8 from their family sedan, but at the end of the day, I see it as I drive it… So first up, let’s address the elephant in the room. Should this car wear a Commodore badge? Probably not, but at the end of the day, GM have decided it will and we will just have to live with that whether we like it or not. If I bought one, I would just remove the badges. RS SPORTSWAGON

Now to the car itself. Sure, at a quick glance it does resemble a Mazda or maybe even the latest Hyundai. Put them side by side and the resemblance is maybe not so exact but it is what it is. For me, it’s starting to grow on me. Mind you, I absolutely hated the VR Commodore when it came out because it was so far removed from what I was used to seeing on the VP, that the new model made me ill… I guess it’s the same with the ZB range. Die-hard performance Commodore owners are outraged that the legacy won’t live on (at least with the V8) and I agree it’s such a shame. So, like I said, I went into this drive with an open mind, not knowing what to expect. From the driver’s seat, I quite liked the layout and feel of the dash and its surrounds. Its spacious interior is well appointed and quite comfortable in both the front and back seating area. The quality of the build inside is very good. Two thumbs up in this area. The only downside with this interior is that the passenger front seat doesn’t have the functionality of the driver’s seat. Even just adding the ability of lowering the passenger seat would be a bonus. On the open road, the 2.0-litre turbo engine surprised me. I wasn’t expecting too much, but when the accelerator was pushed towards the floor, the power band from the small engine was impressive. Could it tow a boat or caravan with ease? I’m not sure about that, but as a family-spec wagon, it’s got enough grunt to get the job done. The 9-speed auto performs effortlessly. What I did find a little

82

RS Sportswagon

Calais V unsettling was that as soon as you come to a complete stop, the engine cuts out. You get used to it, but it’s something that can be easily over-ridden. Overall, I thought the RS Sportswagon had its merits and would recommend it for a family wanting a fuel-efficient wagon and isn’t tied up in the non-V8 and Commodore badge hysteria… 7/10. THUMBS UP Well-appointed interior Auto tailgate Surprising Power

ZB CALAIS V SEDAN

As soon as you sit in the Calais V, the higher level of refinements is obvious. The leather interior is spacious and comfy and thankfully features an electric, adjustable passenger front seat! Those front seats are also not only heated, but also cooled offering comfort no matter what the weather is outside. Like the lower-spec RS Wagon, the dash layout is easy to read and has everything within reach, though because this one is a Calais it comes with more options including a cool 360-degree camera that shows you the view from the front and rear but also down each side shown from above. There’s a pair of sneaky camera’s in the mirrors that takes care of that. If you’ve never had this option, you’ll never miss it, but once you have used it, you’re going to wish you had it in every car you drive. Speaking of driving, the V6 engine coupled to the 9-speed auto is a great package. The acceleration is lively and the gear changing ultra-smooth. But, being an all-wheel-drive vehicle means it can be a little heavy on fuel –

especially if you tend to push the throttle hard on occasions. The ride is first rate and can be changed to suit your mood at the flick of a switch. As with any new model, the ZB Commodore was always going to take a little while for people to appreciate the radical new styling that is so far from where the VF model left off, it’s not funny. Me? I like it. I didn’t at first. But the more I look at it, the more I can picture this car with a body kit, reduced ride height and of course a more stylish set of custom wheels. I can’t wait to see the reception the first ZB Commodore owner gets when he rocks up in a modified version! As I mentioned, I believe this car should have been named something else and a new chapter started for Holden. It is what it is – an Insignia. Whatever badge it wears, the new ride from Holden is a damn great car. Drive it before you start to rubbish it, you just may be surprised… 8/10 THUMBS UP Heated and Cooled Front seats. 360-degree camera V6 engine / 9-speed auto package.

Cyber Cruisin’ Rocky Boler - 1949 Ford Coupe

Spin

PUTTING A

ON IT!

Rocky Boler’s Grandfather used to take him fishing in his ‘49 Ford. It certainly made an impression on the young Rocky, who built this ’49 Coupe as a tribute to his Grandfather Sedans of the late 40’s and early 50’s are gaining in popularity lately and Rocky Boler’s 1949 Ford Coupe is a prime example of what can be achieved when blending original styling with modern day muscle and style. Originally featuring a flathead V8 powerplant, Rocky initially repowered this ‘49 with a big block Chev engine. That was fine for around 13-years until Rocky decided it was time to give the humble Ford coupe the mother of all make overs... In no time at all, the crew at Creative Rod and Custom had the ’49 stripped down to its bare bones, ready to bring Rocky’s idea’s to life. Those idea’s included a completely new interior, a new colour, new underpinnings and a driveline that would have jaws dropping - especially in the engine bay department. Upon lifting the bonnet, you’re imediatley greeted by eight highly polished ram tubes connected to the EFI injected Kaase 547ci Boss Ford big block. that made a credible 833ci on the dyno. A Tremec T56 gearbox backs the killer engine combo - a package that would have no doubt please his Grandad. The colour was a no-brainer for Rocky. With fond memories of those fishing trips entrenched in his mind, the colour was always going to be the same green that original ‘49 Ford wore, That colour is Ford’s Sea Mist Green. From the Boss engine to the reworked chassis and suspension to the slick paint and interior, Rocky’s ‘49 Ford Coupe is an absolute standout!
