From the Desk I THINK I MAY HAVE CREATED A MONSTER...

As soon as word got out about the upcoming, first-ever Pro-Street Sunday, my email and Facebook Messenger was bombarded with enquiries from all over the country.

Who knows how big this thing can become?

I need to let people know exactly what the deal is to start with. The 2020 event will essentially be a big show and shine that will incorporate a Performance Parts Swap Meet, traders and maybe some engine start-ups during the day. We will be raising money and awareness for Men’s Mental Health Issues through Beyond Blue so that alone should bring in a big array of cars.

So the cars we are catering for are true, hard-core Pro-Street styled cars. Big and little wheel combo’s. The right stance. Big engines and more. Basically a drag car with rego plates – you know the look! What we don’t want are late-model Commodores with 20x8-inch Simmons or a stock FPV Falcon with a Vortech blower; unless these cars are tubbed, caged and ready to hit the quarter mile.

So if this event takes off like I am expecting it will, it will grow into a two day event to become a festival of the Pro-Street religion. So if you want to see that happen, make sure you support the very first Pro-Street Sunday. There’s plenty of details currently available on the website and we’ll be updating everyone through the mag as things progress. Stay tuned…

What’s Happening KILLER RIDES FATHERS DAY EXPO AT BUNNINGS

We’ve been staging our monthly Cars and Coffee Catch-Up’s at the Albion Park Rail branch of Bunnings, and we were asked to assemble a group of cars to display during their Thursday night pre Fathers-Day family demonstration night. Unfortunately, after 45-plus days of no rain, it poured down reducing the number of cars to just two – Rob Garcia’s slick LX Torana Hatch and Keven O’Sullivan’s big block Old’s convertible. The cars made quite an impression on the hundreds of people who attended the night. Thanks to Sam and the team at Bunnings for having Killer Rides on board. Plans are now in place for a big Christmas celebration at the Store. More info to follow…

If the rumours circulating are correct, there’s a twin-turbo C8 Corvette on its way to Australia in 2022, packing no less than 600 barn-storming kilowatts and 950Nm, easily surpassing the Hellcat’s from Dodge. If the Z06 does reach our shores, chances are it will be in very limited numbers and will probably command the highest price tag of anything ever offered through a Holden dealership. The factory are expecting to make an official announcement of the Z06 engine package later this year. Then its game on!

What’s Happening STREET OUTLAWS – “THE LIST” VIDEO GAME

It was only a matter of time before the popular Discovery Channel show Street Outlaws became a video game. To be released on October 22nd and available for PS4 and XBoxOne platforms, the game showcases all the cars and the stars including Murder Nova, Big Chief, Farm Truck and more. Like the show, it’s all about the racing and being on “the list”. The game is to be priced at $59.90 USD but no word yet as to the Australian price.

Hi Paul, After reading your editorial in Issue 15, I have to say, I couldn’t agree with you more. Sure, I don’t like every car I see at a show or in magazines etc, but just because its not built to my liking, doesn’t mean is a crap quality build that I have the right to bag out publically! If we all had the same taste, the world would be a boring place. Personally, I like early model Commodores - VB/VC’s, but that doesn’t mean I can’t appreciate a nice Falcon, Volkswagon or even that cool Oldsmobile you featured! I really think people need to pull their heads in and keep their shitty comments to themselves.

G’day Paul, Some people have no idea. I read your editorial in the latest magazine and you hit the nail rght on the head. I have been to so many shows and always 16 hear people bagging out a car because the colour was too bright, the interior too plain and the engine bay didn’t have enough chrome. For gods sake, keep that crap to yourself! Better still, build your own car, put it on display and see how you like people commenting on your pride and joy. Until that happens, shut the f&*k up!

Stuart T via Email Hi Guys, These two letters summed up the general reaction to my Editorial in Issue 15 regarding peoples comments about car builds they don’t like and how they publically criticise the owners and builders.

As I’ve mentioned, I cop a lot of flack from many people online about my decision to change the colour of Rex Webster’s FJ which I saved from rusting away under a car port. Its a long story, but the colour change was necessary. I don’t regret it one bit. I honestly thought it would have recieved a better reception than it did, but instead people hiding behind their keyboards know much better...obviously. I will continue to build my cars my way. As the saying goes; “I built it for my satisfaction, not to get your approval.”

GRUDGE KINGS - THE BEST

Hey Paul, How good is the Grudge Kings event? It was the first time in a long time that I have been excited to be at the drags in Sydney. The racing was awesome, the attitudes of the racers in the pits was first class and the show and shine was as good as I have seen. Overall, the Grudge Kings was by far the best meet I have been to in a long, long time. Can’t wait for the next one! As usual, great coverage from Killer Rides. Keep that stuff coming.

After a bunch of fab work from the team at Pro-Flo Performance, this tough HQ has gone back to owner Bejay, to be finished off inside his TSR Mechanical Repairs workshop in the NSW Southern Highlands.

The HQ rolled from the Pro-Flo Chassis shop looking much better than it did when it arrived, with the mini-tubs done, a new floor section, sheet-metal diff and four-link rear suspension completing the rear-end make-over.

Inside, the factory front seat has been ditched in favour of two, lightweight alloy Kirkey Race seats surrounded by a full roll-cage showing its true intention of being a tough street car. Eventually, the interior will be getting a complete retrim by Paul Aquilina at Aqua’s Auto Skins.

PUMP FUEL 470-CUBE BIG BLOCK CHEV TO COME! So what will be providing the power for this tough-street HQ? You can forget any idea’s of a small block – including an LS-package. Likewise, there’s no forced induction either – well, not initially anyway. This HQ will rely on unadultered, raw horsepower to fry those big 275/60 ET Street radials! The pump-fuel big block Chev will sport 470 cubic inches and will feature AFR alloy heads and two big 1050 Holley Dominators perched high on a Jake Bain sheet-metal tunnel ram intake. Backing that will be a tough, Reid-case Powerglide built by Craig’s Automatics with the already fitted diff housing scoring a Strange alloy centre section and 40-spline axles.

Coming Attractions Once completed, this HQ will be one serious streeter, capable of running low ET’s in street trim and cruising with the best of them with the family riding shotgun. Layton Crambrook – 1972 HQ GTS Monaro

Layton Crambrook’s blown 406ci HQ GTS Monaro is the latest in a long line of modified cars that he has had the keys too. He’s had many street cars, speedway cars and race cars – including a V8 Supercar, but it’s this purple HQ Monaro – a genuine GTS, that has been by far the best yet.

Purchased from a mate, Matt Cavenagh in Darwin, the HQ had been languishing under his house for some time. The car was in fair condition with just a small amount of rust visible and a splashing of yellow paint – it was the perfect project car for Layton. When he decided to vacate Darwin for a new life in Sydney, Layton loaded up his belongings, including his Monaro and headed to his new home. The good thing about long drives is that it gives you time to think. Layton already had plans for the Monaro, but the long hours behind the wheel on the way to Sydney gave him time to reflect on what he really wanted the HQ to be when its was finished. By the time the Monaro arrived in its new resting place, Layton had firm plans in place and set about making them happen – the sooner, the better.

There was no chance in hell that the yellow paint was going to make an encore appearance, as Layton had a better option already picked out.

Knowing that getting the HQ panels gun-barrel straight was never going to be an easy task, Layton entrusted the panel work to Paul’s Restorations where plenty of hours were lavished into each panel ensuring that when the new colour was laid on, the base was pristine. The colour of choice was a stunning combination of Amethyst Metallic with the white GTS stripes. Pauly also handled the paint application and as expected, the job is first class.

To compliment the body colour, Layton had the reworked interior stitched up in white BMW leather by Hy-Tone Motor Trimming. The interior is part old school, and part modern with the factory lowback bucket seats replaced with more stylish CV8 Monaro items, and the rear bench trimmed to match. The original dash is now filled with accurate AutoMeter gauges and the original shifter has been given the flick so that the B&M Magnum Grip Street Bandit shifter to take centre stage on the tunnel. The same material used on the seats, has been used on the floor instead of covering it with carpet and the seatbelts are also colour-coded. Like the body and paint, Layton certainly had the right team involved with the interior.

The Monaro was always going to get a tough driveline, and small block Chev’s don’t get any tougher than when they are topped with a big polished blower. Stefano at Nicotra Race Engines pieced together the pumped small block that would eventually repower the Monaro. The prepped block now houses a Scat crank and rod combo, Diamond blower pistons and a Howard blower reference hydraulic roller cam and lifter kit.

A pair of AFR CNC-ported alloy heads were fitted with larger valves and Howard triple springs were bolted into place offering the Blower Shop manifold somewhere to attach to. The polished Blower Shop 6/71 supercharger and twin 750cfm blower reference Quick Fuel carbs soon followed and completed the towering engine package.

While it looks the part, blown engines are all about performance and this one made a credible 761hp on a safe tune and a diet of pump fuel.

A reverse-pattern Turbo 400 auto fronted with a Dominator 4000rpmconverter backs the engine and sends those 700-plus ponies rearward to the shortened 9-inch diff that is fitted with a true-trac centre with 3.5-gears. A custom tailshaft connects the two.

Having all the power accounts for nothing if the braking and handling don’t receive significant upgrades. No such problems here though with both ends now featuring Viking double adjustable coil-overs and disc brakes – Wilwood 355mm with 6-piston calipers on the front and FG Falcon slotted discs on the rear. A Wilwood master cylinder controls the stopping pressure. FR18 Simmons also feature at each corner – 8’s on the front and big 12’s on the rear.

THE MEANING OF THE PLATES! “It was always a dream for my Dad and I to own a blown HQ Coupe as he has owned his fair share of Monaro’s. The HUMBLE plates are in recognition of his 1800hp, twin-turbo 510 big block Chev powered Water ski race boat that he drove to no less than three World Championships all over the globe,” Layton proudly explained!

The Monaro made its debut at Summernats 30 which resulted in a spot in the Top 60. Since then, there’s been Best of Show wins in Sydney and Darwin including the 2017 Gazzanats (Best Undercarriage, Race Your Mates and Go to Whoa) and the 2017 Grand Champion at the Red Centre Nats 03. It was at this time that the Monaro also made its only trips to date down the quarter mile. More runs will follow soon where it is hoped the HQ will dip into the 10’s. For now though, it’s all about enjoying the Coupe with the family and creating lasting memories…

For the past five years on Father’s Day, Showcars Melbourne have been filling Acland Street (the main drive through the centre of St Kilda) will all kinds of performance and custom cars, transforming the shopping area to a sea of colour and chrome.

Go to St Kilda any day and you’ll be greeted by thousands of people all trying to take in the atmosphere of one of Victoria’s most famous suburbs. On weekends, the number of visitors to the area more than triples. So, you can imagine how busy Father’s Day was when you add hundreds of cars parked up and on show in every available piece of real estate the suburb has to offer.

I’ve always said the Victoria people will go to the opening of a toilet door. They are very proud of what their state has to offer an will attend any event by the thousands just to make sure it’s a success so it returns the following year.

Car events are no exception. Melbourne has a huge car culture, and when there’s an event on, generally speaking, everyone does their best to be there.

Face painting, giveaways, kids rides and amusements and live music all ensured that the gathered crowd were kept well entertained all day.

But it wasn’t just about the cars. There’s so much more that makes this day special…

The team at Showcars Melbourne wanted a family friendly vibe so they made sure the kids were well catered for as well. By all accounts, the 6th Showcars Melbourne Father’s Day Car & Bike Show was a huge success. As well as enjoying more cars and bikes than ever before, conservative estimates on crowd numbers exceeded 40,000 people attending the region over the course of the day.

John Madden had big dreams for his project Mustang. Unfortunately, not everyone shared his vision.

We’ve all heard the stories. Your new project car gets the green light from a certain workshop only to sit languishing in the corner for god knows how long collecting dust. It gets to the point where you think all hope is lost, and then you find that certain someone that is on the same level as you. Bang! Game On! John had always wanted to play a major part in the Mustangs creation and when he met Mario Bevilacqua – a name that kept coming up the more John researched reputable shops. From their first meeting, John knew this was the place for his Mustang. Mario’s passion to see John’s Mustang rendering become a reality was evident and the process was quickly put into motion. Not one to just sit back and let the work happen around him, John spent many hours working alongside Mario, forging a lasting friendship along the way.

When John dragged the Mustang back to Victoria from NSW some fiveyears ago, it wasn’t a great car, but it wasn’t a junker either… Whilst the body showed no rust, time hadn’t been a friend and the wear and tear from years of use was starting to show and it was time for a freshen up.

As John puts it, “it was good from far, but far from good!”

With the body work done and the panel beating tools back in their holes, Mario fired up the compressor and laid on a few coats of custom Orange pearl, highlighted perfectly with the black accents leading onto the side scoops.

While most people are happy to leave the factory Mustang body as per the original spec’s, John and Mario knew that they could make some subtle changes that would enhance the Fastback’s looks rather than detract from them. The most obvious changes externally come from the removal of the door and boot locks and door handles for a much smoother overall appearance. The bonnet scored a pair of mesh vents to help with the air flow from the engine bay whilst the side skirts and scoops were also modified. On the nose, both the upper and lower grille sections are blacked-out with a custom front bar replacing the thin chromed factory fitted item.

With the body work done and the panel beating tools back in their holes, Mario fired up the compressor and laid on a few coats of custom Orange pearl, highlighted perfectly with the black accents leading onto the side scoops. Finishing off the exterior makeover, John had the 17-inch US Mags painted satin black to match the scoops, vents and grille.

Mario’s passion to see John’s Mustang rendering become a reality was evident and the process was quickly put into motion.

The colour carried over to the engine bay where it surrounds a 302-based Windsor stroker engine. Now featuring 347-inches, the stout small block was built by Mario and Airport West Motors and produces around 420hp – a perfect combination for regular street use.

The stretched 5.0-litre bottom end received forged pistons, a steel crank, H-Beam rods and a cam that is mild enough to be traffic-friendly, but wild enough to let people know this isn’t a stocker. A pair of alloy heads then joined the party and feature double valve springs and stylish Ford Racing rocker covers, in black of course! A Holley Sniper EFI set-up sits upon the Edelbrock Performer intake manifold and pushes the 98-octane fuel into the engine before the headers unleash the gases through the Shelby-style side-exhaust system. A stage-two C4 auto, complete with a Dominator 2500rpm converter, passes the power through to the 8 ¾-inch limited slip rear end with ease.

After the mechanicals were in and sorted, everyone’s attention turned to the suspension and braking areas. With the exception of the rack and pinion steering assembly, the Mustangs suspension isn’t what you’d call high-tech. The old tried and tested method of lowered springs and stiffer shocks was employed here along with the old Shelby disc and drum braking combination. It works and works well so there’s no need to reinvent the wheel!

Opening either door reveals yet more black in stark contrast to the Mustang’s panels. Trimmed in vinyl by our man Mario and the team at TMI, the new material covers the custom front seats and the fold-down rear bench seat along with the door trims, headlining and dash. Speaking of the dash, the circa ’65 facia and dials are long gone, replaced by more stylish (and more accurate) AutoMeter items.

Cruising tunes are provided by the Pioneer sounds system and when it gets just a little too hot inside, John can crank up the windows and flick on the air-con! Billet interior door handles and a cool steering wheel finish off the custom trim nicely.

The Mustang has been finished for around 12 months now, and in that time, John and his family have cruised it to many shows and meets as well as just a leisurely Sunday arvo drive around Melbourne – as you do!

We’ll leave the final word to John. “I wanted to put my mark on the Mustang, be a little Deviant and do things outside the box, different from others but not take away from the iconic car it is. I call the car ‘Priceless’. Why? Well after moving the car to Mario, I was taking part in the work on the car also working nights and weekends together. We all became really great mates and we all put blood, sweat and more sweat into the car! It’s not a car that I paid someone else to build for me and then drive. I was involved in nearly every nut, bolt and part installed. The experience and friendships I gained from this is something I would never have expected. To know that I was involved in the creation of this car makes me feel that the car is an extension of me, and without it I would not have made the friendship made!’

This Cadillac Pink ‘63 EH was commissioned for GM’s General Manager who was heading to Australia to run the companies SA plant. It was colour matched to the Cadillac he was driving in America at the time.

The one-off build also featured Bone leather and vinyl from Germany. Current owner, Harvey Miles found the run down car in the Canberra suburb of Western and was restored from 2011 until 2018.

Gene Miller’s burgundy, Chev-powered EK Ute was a slick, home-built streeter that never looked out of place at any show. Gene however, knew he could do better and stripped the old girl for a new, improved look.

“The cars I build generally stay with me, as they become part of the family”, explained Gene. That’s why he still has his EJ Holden sedan – a car he had since he was 16 years old and one that still sports 13-inch Bridgestone Eagers that are almost brand new! “I don’t think I’ll ever part with any of my cars, especially the EK Ute. I just get so attached to them…” Fair enough too. I’m sure every car guy has had cars they wished they had kept hold of. I know I have…

Gene’s EK was a cool Ute. The small block Chev under the tilt-forward bonnet lived a healthy life on a strict diet of LPG with two gas mixers mounted to a tunnel ram.

The burgundy paint was great and the interior offered a great place for him and wife Amanda to spend hours in cruising. But Gene being Gene, he knew the EK could be a better car all round. He was never really happy with the gaps and wanted to change up the trim and give the aging Ute a whole new identity. And so started a rebuild that would see Gene spend the next 18-months perfecting those area’s that never seemed to get done right before.

He paid particular attention to the body work himself, knowing that he could get the body better than he did the previous time he took to the old Holden’s body panels with the necessary tools.

The EK was stripped to its birthday suit and sand-blasted the body back to its original steel. There was definitely no turning back now!

The body mods are subtle, but make the world of difference to the overall appearance. The most obvious change, the tilt-forward bonnet, was carried over from the previous build and sets Gene’s EK apart from every other model on the planet. Other changes include a custom fuel filler and bead moulding around the headlight trims and indicator bars to form a seal just like the classic Tri-5 Chevys. And see that drop tank hiding under the EK’s rear? Well, that’s not quite a drop tank.

It’s a cover that once hid the LPG tank from the EK’s previous engine package. But with the new engine running petrol, Gene converted the gas tank to a fuel tank and then re-covered it with the faux drop tank.

Right from the outset of this latest build, Gene wanted to add more detail into the Ute and raise the benchmark in regards to the finished quality. I think he can confidently tick both of those boxes.

With the body mods done, and Gene suitably impressed with the job he did on the sheet metal, it was time to add colour. Gene wanted to go to the opposite end of the colour spectrum to keep as far away from the pearl Burgundy as he could. After much deliberation, it was decided to colour the EK in a custom mix Turquoise. The end result? Well let’s just say Gene is more than happy with the decision…

Inside, the previous trim was removed and redone by TQ Motor Trim, who just happened to stitch the original interior in the Ute. The FG Falcon seats sit either side of the custom Toyota Crown centre console and have been covered in a combination of Charcoal Leather and Grey suede as have the moulded door trims. In stark contrast to the previous interior, the headlining is now a one-piece fibreglass item that has been trimmed to match the reworked tray area. So, whilst half the interior is more modern than the Ute itself, there’s still plenty of cool 60’s flavour kept in place such as the original dash, where each gauge has been stripped down, colour-coded and fitted back into the chrome fascia. The shiny metal continues with the Budnik billet steering wheel mounted to the VK Commodore column. There’s no stereo fitted as Gene would rather listen to V8-FM.

Speaking of the engine, Gene stuck with the small block Chev option, but not the gas-fed version that once occupied the small confines of the EK engine bay. Sporting 383-cubes, the rammed small block was picked up from a mate who had it built, but needed it sorted properly. A pair of 465 Holley carbs pump the fuel in for the MSD ignition to light the fire in the cylinders. A Crow roller cam and lifter combo provides a rumble that excites the inner-hoon in all of us whilst the forged Eagle pistons, 5.6” rods and 400-cube crank provide the muscle that easily melts those 15-inch treads! The exhaust system starts with a pair of Hadfield headers that exit through the inner guards and finishes as a dual 2.75-inch system that flows straight out the back. Gene is unsure of the horsepower being made, but knows it’s more than enough!

Backing the rammed 383 is a stage 2 Turbo 400 auto with a 3200rpm B&M converter which sends the power to the narrowed 9-inch diff using cruising-friendly 3.6-gears.

The underside also copped a chassis-kit, 2-inch lowered Pedders front coils and reset leafs on the rear. Pedders Sports shocks were also added to each corner. The HR front end also features a steering combination of LH Torana rack and pinion and the Commodore column. The braking system comprises of HZ stub axles and discs on the front end and Ford drums down the back with the pressure being applied by the VB Commodore Master cylinder (which is now relocated to under the dash) and the remote HR booster. The stud pattern is HQ all round. 15x5 and 15x8 Weld wheels were carried over from the previous build and suit the new colour nicely.

With minimal efforts and an even smaller time frame, the first Father’s Day Carnival bought together a mass of cool cars and people to the Backyard precinct of the Penrith Panthers Leagues Club.

As for the cars, you couldn’t have asked for a better mix. From blown Monaro’s, to LS-powered Torana’s, GT Falcons, Cadillac’s, Hot Rods and everything in between.

Initially a joint venture between the Leagues club and the Mustang Owners Club, a decision was made to bring in the Kar Nutz Car Club to boost the show car numbers.

This happened just a couple of weeks out from the event on September 1st. With a figure of around 60-cars 84 in mind, the event was around a quarter of that when Barney Kodsy and the Kar Nutz crew got involved. Through their reputation of staging events such as the Cars Under the Stars, those numbers were exceeded during the day thanks to the glorious sunshine and the huge amount of people visiting the venue to celebrate Father’s Day.

When Stephen Sammut travelled to the USA to check out his newly acquired big block Chevelle, it had been shipped to the holding yard in downtown Compton. Not an ideal place to leave a bright green, big block Muscle car laying around…

Steve had previously cruised the streets in a nicely modified ’67 Camaro, but wanted something a little different to what he currently had. After getting inspiration from several movies featuring late 60’s Chevelle’s, he decided it was time for him to bite the bullet and find one for himself. Now Chevelle’s aren’t your average performance car here in Australia. They aren’t common and when you do find them, they are either over-priced, worn-out or have had a dodgy conversion done.

Either way, Steve knew he was going to need to find his Chevelle in the USA. And so began the search!

He found this Sub Lime Pearl Green ’69 Coupe on Vanguard Motor Sales, a US car dealer’ website, and after viewing the long, detailed video several times, knew this was to be his car. Though no matter how much Steve haggled with the salesman, the price stayed firm and with his heart already attached to the car, the deposit was paid in Jan 2018.

From there, the car was shipped from Michigan to Compton where it sat at the Brokers Yard awaiting shipment to Australia – but not before our man Steve travelled to the other side of the globe to test drive his new car. Not knowing of Compton’s reputation, Steve cruised the Chevelle with a huge smile on his face, until he was approached by a trio of locals wanting to know about the car.

Not ideal for the shy, introvert type, the Sub Lime Pearl Green is all about impact.

Lucky not to be ‘relieved’ of the coupe, Steve returned to the Brokers yard and parked safely inside the compound. The next time Steve would see the Chev, it would be back in Australia some time later. Once on our shores, Steve put the plans in place to get the Chevelle registered – albeit on conditional rego. After all, it’s not the kind of car Steve would be using on a daily basis. With the issues sorted and the rego plates attached, it was time to hit the blacktop.

Built in the Restomod theme, the first thing that hits you about this car is the colour. Not ideal for the shy, introvert type, the Sub Lime Pearl Green is all about impact. It’s bright enough to stand out in a sea of red, black and blue muscle cars, yet suits the body style perfectly. Accented with black stripes and 22-inch black-centred Forgiato, the exterior appeal harks back to the hey days of the factory muscle car wars when each manufacturer tried anything and everything to better the competition – including outlandish colours!

Not knowing of Compton’s reputation, Steve cruised the Chevelle with a huge smile on his face, until he was approached by a trio of locals wanting to know about the car.

Inside, it’s all black, but not just your basic vinyl or leather, the entire interior has been restitched in Ostrich Skin leather, making it a very special place to be. Just behind the smaller steering wheel sits a dash full of Dakota digital gauges bringing the circa ’69 interior up to 2019. Steve added some billet alloy accessories to liven up the all black trim.

Originally factory fitted with a 396-cube big block, a fast ride back in 1969, but this is 2019 and bigger is always better. Now sporting no less than 572 cubic inches and 620hp, the GM Performance crate engine features an 850cfm Holley carb, alloy heads and a 10.2-inch tall deck block with 4-bolt mains. Detailed with colour-coded rocker covers and various alloy components, the engine looks just a good as it performs.

Backing the engine is a Turbo 400 auto with 2800 stall converter that feeds the power to the factory 12-bolt GM Posi-Traction rear end with 3.73-gears.

Once on our shores, Steve put the plans in place to get the Chevelle registered – albeit on conditional rego.

There’s been plenty of work done on the Chevelle’s underside, again sticking to the Restomod deal. The rear has been updated with a four-link set-up and each corner scored Air Ride Technologies airbag suspension helping the big coupe handle so much better. The braking system has also seen a massive upgrade with BAER discs and calipers living inside those big black rims.

The Chevelle has certainly come a long way from when it was first finished in 2010 in Atlanta, Georgia at a reported cost of around $150,000USD. Nine years later, the car still looks as good as new and has given its new owner plenty of pleasure whether it’s behind the wheel or at a show where the Chevelle has been getting plenty of attention from both spectators and those awarding the trophies. Something tells me there will be many more of those coming Steve’s way in the future…

Daniel has been into modified cars for as long as he could drive and currently has a tough, HSV-inspired EH Holden wagon in the build. But when the opportunity presented itself to purchase a custom 1995 Harley Fatboy, Daniel couldn’t knock it back…

Built in the increasingly popular Cholo Vicla style, it was everything Daniel had hoped for in a custom bike. The style. The colour. The build quality. The only thing he wasn’t too sure about was the Ape Hanger handlebars, but now that he is used to them, he loves them. Originally built by Nathan at Livin Loco, the bike started its life as a basic ’95 Fatboy Harley. Not one to leave things stock, Nathan sent plenty of time chopping and changing the bike until he was happy with how it sat, looked and rode.

The original rear guard has been stretched 6-inches and both sides have been extended by two inches, bringing it down lower over the 18-inch Fat Spoke wheel. The Heritage-style front guard has also received the same treatment, hugging that 23-inch spoke wheel nicely. The factory tank halves now hug the single seat more and the period-perfect tank badges give the bike an old school look. The bulky factory rear tail light and indictors are long gone, replaced with a set of thin, LED brake lights/indicators.

With the tin work finished, Nathan turned his attention to laying on the new colours. Using black as the base, the multi-coloured paint that followed is nothing short of spectacular. Combining various metal-flakes, pearls, candies, gold and silver leaf, variegated leaf, water droplets and real white gold into something this intricate is not only the work of a master painter, but someone with more patience than I’ll ever know. When combined with the black, the colours literally pop off the base colour.

With the tin work finished, Nathan turned his attention to laying on the new colours. Using black as the base, the multi-coloured paint that followed is nothing short of spectacular.

The gloss black was also applied to the 17-inch Ape Hanger bars and everything that bolts up beneath them including the later model Harley headlight Nacelle with matching spotlights and indicators. Even the lowered, contrast cut front end and wheel rims were coated to match. At the other end of the bars, contrast cut grips were added along with billet mirrors (in black of course!) and later model Harley switches. The colour-coded Mexican blanket adds to the whole Cholo theme and appeal. The original frame is untouched, but does use a Simplified Air Suspension set-up to enhance the ride and get the bike sitting low when not being ridden.

At one stage, there was a 110ci Rev-Tech V-twin engine providing ample amounts of power. But after that engine decided to call it a day, an EVO-spec Harley engine was returned to its rightful home.

Built by Magnum Motorcycles, the V-twin scored bigger heads and a much more useful cam than the Harley engineers had ever intended. A Fireball ignition system provides the spark to get the engine idling with the gases shown the door via dual, 32-inch straight through tail pipes. These were 10-inches longer when the bike was registered in Qld, but were cut back to suit the laws in NSW. A standard issue 5-speed box completes the driveline. Whilst it may not set any speed records, Daniel says it goes well for what it is. That’s not to say that improvements can’t be made. Sometime down the track, Daniel can see a Procharger forcing fuel and air into the EVO at a rapid rate!

Daniel has only owned this cool Harley for around 12 months and gets it out whenever time permits. Its seen plenty of road miles, yet is still able to score the gold at various shows including no less than 4 Bike of the Show awards and 2nd Bike Overall at our recent Killer Rides Live event. With the warmer months quickly approaching, you can bet this Harley will get a lot more kilometres added to the speedo sooner rather than later – a Daniel couldn’t be happier!

UPDATE ON CONDITIONAL REGISTRATION SCHEME IN NSW

Many of you in NSW are likely to have one or more of their vehicles on Historic or Classic Plates and are probably unaware of a recent change to the registration process that the RMS and Service for NSW have introduced about a month ago, with no notice and no consultation I must add. The change is that the “Historic Vehicle Declaration” and the “Classic Vehicle Declaration” can no longer be emailed to your Club for endorsement as they are required to be the original. RMS and Service for NSW will reject any document that appears to be a copy. There was no official information released by RMS when these changes were made so we are in the dark as to why such a change was made?

ANSMA has now reached a size that was unexpected when it was created by Graham Stubbs (RIP) back in 1985. We now have over 100 Affiliated Clubs across Australia and inexcess of 2,500 Individual members and growing. This growth is our strength in dealing with the Government over registration issues with our members vehicles but it is also a legacy to the foresight of Graham Stubbs when he started the Association!
