From the Desk IS THERE ANYTHING BETTER THAN HITTING THE OPEN ROAD IN A COOL STREET CAR? I really love this time of year. Most of the country is enjoying longer days thanks to Daylight Savings rolling in and with the increased amount of daylight, the more chances you have to get out and about in your pride and joy. Living on the NSW South Coast, we are spoilt for choices of amazing coast line to cruise along and some of the nicest rural areas that are begging for long cruise sessions. Back in the day, I’m talking mid to late 80’s, our choice of cruise spot was the South Beach area and up around the lighthouse. If it wasn’t raining, this is where you’d find us most nights after work. Everyone would congregate there, especially on a sunny Sunday where it was wall to wall tough street cars either parked up taking in the sights, or cutting laps around the beachfront waiting for a parking spot to open up. They were amazing days and many lifelong friendships were forged. Sadly, those areas are now over run by families in their stock cars who get there at the crack of dawn to get the best picnic spots on the grassed area’s overlooking the beach front, or down on the sand itself. So where do you like to cruise? For Kathy and I, when time allows, we can venture up to the southern highlands to some of the most picturesque roadways imaginable. We often cruise south to Berry or even just a short cruise to Jamberoo Pub for lunch and then to Kiama before heading back home. Of course, most weekends are spent going to events and if it’s possible, we’ll fill up the Chev and take in a show or two. It may not be the most fuel-efficient car around, but damn its cool to cruise! And for someone who lives and breathes the modified car scene, it simply doesn’t get any better. Now, where’s my damn car keys… See you on the street,

Paul

AUTO RUMBLE 3 SHAKES THE GROUND IN MORUYA

When promoter Lee Pearce wound up the South Coast Nationals in Moruya, he wanted to take a few steps back and put together a couple of events that was all about having fun with cars on a more personal level. The small but still impressive gathering filled the grounds of the Ingenia Motel on the river and even featured a couple of impressive drag cars that fired up to entertain everyone within Moruya! We are heading back there for the Hot Rod and Custom event planned for the first weekend of Feb.

ROAD TRIP RETURN

Hi Paul, I was reading an older issue of Killer Rides (#47 – May/June 2022) and saw an ad for the Performance Street Car Road Trip. After going through the next few issues, I noticed that the event was cancelled. What a shame. Is there any chance that it will be part of Killer Rides in the near future? I am almost finished building an LS3-powered HK Brougham and would love to take it for an extended cruise with you guys. Who cares if there’s only 20-30 cars in the convoy? I reckon it would be an awesome, few days away. C’mon Paul, make this happen. Please. Blake K – Dandenong G’day Blake, Thanks for your message and support. I was devastated why I had to make the call about cancelling the Road Trip. But as it turned out, it was the right decision, as the night we were due to be in Narrandera, floods took over the town and we would have been stranded. With that said, I am determined to bring back the Road Trip. Will that be in 2024? Stay tuned…

18

VIDEO FEATURES ARE COOL

Hi Paul, Just wanted to drop you a line to tell you how much I am enjoying Killer Rides and especially the Video features you have each issue. Being able to see the car in action and to hear the engine running makes so much difference, and that’s why I hang out for every issue of Killer Rides. Keep up the great work. Thomas N – Townville Hi Thomas, Thanks for your kind words, and your support. Adding videos to Killer Rides is nothing new, in fact I had been running small video clips within the features, but now, they are full sized across a double page, much better, I think. Look for more of these in the future…

CAR PRICES KILLING THE SCENE

G’day Paul, Is it just me, or are people asking ridiculous prices for what’s consider “classic” cars these days? How do people afford to pay $20k plus for a worn-out piece of crap that needs new floors, panels, interior and driveline etc. No wonder it takes more than five years to build a street car now, along with a very big bank account! It makes you wonder if the modified car scene even has a future if prices continue to stay at a level they now are. Is it any wonder we are seeing more and more late model Falcon’s and Commodore’s at events these days? Martin C – Parramatta G’day Martin, I agree. Some prices that people are asking for ‘wrecks’ is out of control. But whilst people still hand over large amounts of money for cars worth nowhere near the asking price, we’ll be paying crazy money for some time to come. It really is a worry for the future of our sport.

ARE ELECTRIC CARS DOOMED?

Hi Paul, I was considering buying an EV, or maybe a Hybrid, as a daily driver as rising fuel costs are just crazy. I have been doing some research on EV’s and the ongoing costs associated with them, including the replacement batteries etc. I don’t tend to travel too far these days so running out of charge isn’t a concern. What is a concern though is the amount of EV’s, in particular the Tesla, that have been document to burst into flames. Everyone I spoke to couldn’t give me an answer other than to say “there have been isolated cases.” Sounds like a corporate line to me. Anyway, after months of reading into the pros and cons regarding EV’s, I’ve decided to wait a little longer to find out more about these Hydrogen engines I heard Toyota are developing. Zoe G – Penrith

Hi Zoe, I’m not a fan of electric vehicles at all, but I do believe that have a place, especially in major cities where congestion and pollution is a major problem. But even though the world is working towards ‘forcing’ everyone into an Electric Vehicle, it’s comforting to see GM spending billions of dollars on developing their next generation petrol V8 engine. Looks like there’s hope yet! 19

COMING ATTRACTIONS

That thing got a

HEMI?

The tough Monaro’s keep coming from the Proflo Performance workshop, but this time its sporting one hell of an engine transplant!

PROFLO PERFORMANCE_1969 HT MONARO WORDS – PAUL BECK PICS – CHARLIE SANT / PROFLO I spotted this Monaro some time ago whilst photographing the Single Spinner inside the Proflo workshop. Initially, it was the huge wheel combo that first grabbed my attention. I remember when I had my HT Monaro in the mid 80’s, 15-inch wheels were pushing the limits. Whilst 15” wheels are still considered a great size for the early Holden muscle car, Paul and his team think that bigger is better with no less than 22x7.5’s on the steering end and a whopping 24x13-inches on the suitably modified rear end that includes a sheet-

metal diff housing with floaters, four-link, coil-overs and massive 16” AP Racing disc brakes and 6-piston calipers visible through the one-off Schott wheels. The rest of the underside is a work of art. There’s been plenty of hours put into the Monaro’s floor with everything smoothed off with flat floors, recessions in the boot floor for the exhaust system and an independent front end tube a-arms, rack and pinion steering and coil-overs. Reworked wheel tubs were installed for those massive rollers, along with a new transmission tunnel.

The body retains its classic Holden lines. After all, these are widely regarded as the best-looking Holden’s of all time, so why would you mess with a reputation like that? Just some subtle mods have been made. Inside, it’s a different story. The wheels tubs, fabricated tunnel and roll cage are obvious and are signature modifications for just about every car that comes through the Proflo workshop. A M&M shifter sits proudly upon the tunnel, in between a pair of Recaro seats. A billet steering wheel and column have also been added. Moving to the boot and it’s all business. Forget about adding any luggage here, with the custom fuel tank and pump and DMPE dry sump oil tank taking up just about every inch of the available boot space. Up front is a blown injected big block but of another origin. Yes, it’s a Hemi, but not your garden variety street Hemi. This one is a Noonan H2O billet Hemi that is almost out shined by the stunning 14/71 billet BDS blower topped with a polished Proflo Performance (PFP Products) injector hat. The engine is full of top shelf gear and will certainly make its presence known once the Monaro is finished. Backing the engine is a Reid case Turbo 400 auto.

...these are widely regarded as the best-looking Holden’s of all time, so why would you mess with a reputation like that?

&

It may have started life as a luxury SUV favoured by the rich and famous, but thanks to Thomas Baz, this Range Rover has been given a new life to terrorise burnout pads across the country…

Thomas Baz 2011 Range Rover Sport

26

27

Is it just me, or has the burnout scene created a new level of cars that would hold their own at any car show entered? Sure, there’s still the cars out there that look liked they’ve been dragged from behind a shed where it sat for 30-years, given a fresh driveline and narrowed rear end and then set loose to destroy tyres. That will never change. But then there’s the guys like Thomas that want more from their burnout car. They want the million-dollar paint job, leather clad trim, detailed show-car type engine bays and more! Following in the footsteps of the likes of Gary & Jake Myers, Phil Kerjean, and Steve Loader to name but a few, Thomas wanted his Range Rover to

28

be more than just a regular burnout entrant. The end result being one standout Range Rover! So, let’s go back a little bit to a time where Thomas’ partner Hayley, was using the Range Rover as a daily drive. As we all know, Euro cars are great until they break. Securing parts can be a problem and when you do find them, you need to take out a second mortgage to pay for the repairs. A major engine problem saw the Range Rover parked up whilst Thomas decided what he was going to do with it. After six months of deliberating, Thomas took out a big-arse grinder and started to chop up the SUV’s bulbous rear end. There was no turning back now. Its fate had been sealed…

Obviously, it’s not your average “pulled from an SS” type of engine combo, this one is like a hamburger with the lot!

29

Externally, the good looks of the Range Rover have been kept in place. There’s no denying that Land Rover had done a great job when designing the ‘Sport’ version in 2011. And apart from removing a chunk of bonnet steel for obvious reasons and filling out the front guards and reworked rear end with more suitable Simmons wheels, Thomas could see no reason to mess with what the Range Rover designers had offered. Even the slick metallic black paintwork with blacked-out badging has been retained! Against the all-black treatment, the charcoal 22-inch Simmons look classy, especially the deep-dished 12inch wide rears! Whilst the factory front brakes are easily spotted inside the narrow front wheels, you’ll have to get down low to see the Strange discs and calipers that hang off either end of the braced and narrowed 9-inch diff that houses 3.0-gears and 35-spline axles. The diff is located via ladder bars with a pair of Viking coil-overs handling the ride. Custom coil-overs have been adapted to the front end.

30

Inside is everything you’d expect from a world-class Euro-built ride and then some. It’s wall to wall cream leather with just a hint of timber accents ...

31

Inside is everything you’d expect from a world-class Euro-built ride and then some. It’s wall to wall cream leather with just a hint of timber accents to showcase the quality the brand is known for. There’s factory dials everywhere on the steering wheel, centre console and dash, and Thomas has added a few of his own for fuel pumps, ignition, fans etc in a custom facia. Gone though is the original instrument cluster, where a digital Race pack dash now occupies the space. Cleverly, Thomas adapted a B&M shifter to the original spot with a fuel shut-off lever sitting just to the right of the console – just in case… And if Thomas and Hayley have their young boys cruising with them, they can be kept entertained by the DVD screen in the headrests! Mind you, these boys are car crazy and would be more interested in the noise from that engine up front!

THANKS TO: Miller @ Limitless Automotive Wiring for wiring the car front to back. Speedmaster for the gearbox. JM Auto Repairs. Wicked Reflections for the complete detailing! Spot-On Wheel Repairs. Kyle Dron. Killer Fabrications for welding the tanks. And my partner Hayley for putting up with me during the 9-month build!

32

33

Speaking of which, it didn’t take long for Thomas to decide that the factory engine, the cause of the Range Rovers not so subtle make over, was never going to be worth the cost of the repair. So he did what every self-respecting rev-head would do, and opt for the worlds most versatile conversion engine – the Chev LS! Obviously, it’s not your average “pulled from an SS” type of engine combo, this one is like a hamburger with the lot, times two! Starting as a 4.8-litre bottom end, the cast iron block still has the factory pistons and rings, but those have been connected to a series 4, crank and rod combo along with a custom cam and LS-7 lifters. A Mellings hi-volume oil pump ensures the slippery stuff gets spready around as soon as the fire in the belly is lit. A pair of LS-1 heads

soon found their way onto the tough bottom end, but not before being fitted with PAC valve springs to handle the high-rpm this combi is going to encounter. Filling the gap between the heads is a Holley Hi-Ram that is the reason that 6/71 Blower Shop supercharger sits so high through the bonnet. Topping the ‘pump’ is a mechanical hat that completes the Range Rover’s more muscular engine option and forces plenty of Methanol into the LS for the MSD ignition to ignite. Thomas isn’t sure about how much horsepower the blown injected LS makes, and isn’t really too fussed. It will make more than enough to destroy the rear tyres at will! Backing the engine is a built Turbo 400 auto that is fitted with a 3500rpm Dominator converter, and can handle around 2500-horsepower!

At the end of the day, Thomas has shown that just about anything can look cool with a set of tubs and a blown engine hanging through the bonnet. I mean, really, who would have thought that a Range Rover would be deemed a Killer Ride? Certainly not the well-to-do set, who prefer Wineries over car shows, designer clothes over black t-shirts and fire pits over burnout smoke! Thomas has now taken something they love and given it the hardcore performance treatment! Be like Thomas… 34

INDY PRO-STREET INVASION HENDRICKS CO. FAIRGROUNDS, DANVILLE WORDS - PAUL BECK PICS - GREG ‘BEACH’ BALL

TOUGH CAR

36

CENTRAL

It was wall to wall blowers, tubs and fat tyres for the inaugural Indy Pro-Street Invasion. 37

The brain child of well-known US Street Machiner, Terry Scrivner, the idea behind the Indy Pro-Street Invasion was to get together the cream of the Pro-Street crop from all over the USA to one place in an unrivalled parade of horsepower, caged interiors and fat tyres! No stranger to tough cars himself, Terry has been part of the US modified car scene since the 70’s where he built and showed his twinturbo Dodge Dart dubbed the “Dart Game”. Having the Dodge appear in no less than

38

11 magazine features and having shown it competitively within the International Show Car Association group of events from 1977 – 1980, Terry passion for the car scene was set. Terry knew the Pro-Street brigade wanted their own event and put the wheels in motion for the 1st Annual Indy Pro-Street Invasion. The criteria was simple. You r car must be tubbed, have fat tyres, narrowed or notched frame, narrowed rear end, performance engine and have that undeniable Pro-Street look!

39

Seeing the many blown, injected, tubbed and caged Pro-Streeters out on the streets cruising is something we will never (legally) get to witness here in Australia.

40

41

Sure, the visual appeal of a Pro-Street car is the first things that gets your heart racing, but nothing can compare to hearing that wild engine idle or watching the cars parade around the Hendricks Co Fairgrounds in Danville with their engines on show for all to see and hear. There’s nothing quite like feeling the ground beneath you rumbling as a 1000-plus horsepower ‘street car’ cruises by. And it wasn’t just the Fairgorunds where the entrants got to cruise around, the entourage

42

also visited the famous Don Schumacher Racing headquarters as well as Top Fuel pilot, Antron Brown’s workshop too! Seeing the many blown, injected, tubbed and caged Pro-Streeters out on the streets cruising is something we will never (legally) get to witness here in Australia. So if you’re itching to see this sort of event and take in everything the Indy Pro-Street Invasion has to offer, best you book your flights and accomodation now for Sept 6th-8th, 2024 for Invasion #2!

43

BEST OF SHOW Wendy Beard’s stunniong ‘70 Cuda took home the inaugural Best of Show award at the Indy ProStreet Invasion. Her candy coloured Cuda, aptly named ‘OBSESION’ a worthy winner amongst so many high-quality ProStreet cars! 44

45

WHO IS TERRY SCRIVNER?

As promoter of the Indy Pro-Street Invasion, Terry Scrivner has spent a lifetime surrounded by Street cars, Show cars and of course, Pro-Street cars. In the 70’s he built and showed a wild Dodge Dart called Dart Game which featured a twin-turbo engine and unbelievable detailing. After a few years on the International Show Car Association circuit, Terry took up a job with the group as a Judge, a position he held until 2008 where he ventured onto judging various other events including Super Chevy, Holley LS Fest, Street Machine Nationals, Corvette Nationals, HotRod Reunion, Goodguys events and many other national and local events. The Indy Pro-Street Invasion is in great hands!

UTED!

Craig & Kristie McKenzie 1967 HR Holden Ute

From humble beginnings as a tidy street car, this HR Holden Ute has been through more changes than most of Hollywood A-listers and still come out looking better than ever at the end of it all! 48

49

My memory of this Ute goes back maybe 30-years, when a much younger Ditch Jones used the then Slate Grey HR as a high-quality streeter with aspirations to become much more always in the back of his mind. Whilst keeping the base colour in place, Ditch at one stage added some graphics and even some wild hot pink highlights. In this form, the HR managed a few trophy wins, obviously fuelling Ditch’s desire for bigger and better things for the Ute. After a massive rebuild, it appeared at the Summernats 20, in the now familiar silver and yellow

paint scheme, having been transformed into a Top 10 winning show car, with its numerous body mods, big billet wheels, smooth underside and blown 6-pack engine. I remember seeing some drawings that Ditch had prior to this showing the HR looking more like a drag car than show car, so I was more than surprised when the covers came of it. After selling the Ute, Bob Gallo took over ownership, continuing the show wins, until he too parted company with it. And that’s when Craig and Kristie McKenzie became the new owners.

Along with the new paint, the Ute had the interior removed, giving a blank canvas for Simon Judd at Elite Custom Interiors to weave his magic...

50

51

The pair gave the HR another quick tidy up before once again hitting the show circuit with the Ute. And yes, still, it was winning trophies everywhere it went, proving that the Ute was built to the highest quality. Craig always knew the time would come where it was no longer a thrill to take the Ute to events in its current guise. And that’s when the decision was made to strip the HR down and give it the mother of all makeovers. Craig is one of these guys who is very handy on the tools, spending his days doing body and paint on all kinds of cars, so working on his own ride was never going to be an issue.

52

Not wanting to change the award-winning body work too much, one thing was sure to change, and that was the colour scheme. Whilst the impact of the yellow and silver worked a treat, no one expected the HR to emerge in a shiny coat of white with bronze added to the grilled, headlight and taillight surrounds, the strips in the load area and on the driveline. Even the 18 and 20-inch billet wheel centres had the accent colour added to shine against the polished alloy. After bringing back the rebuilt Ute, Craig also added subtle black strips to the lower section of the HR’s flanks.

53

Along with the new paint, the Ute had the interior removed, giving a blank canvas for Simon Judd at Elite Custom Interiors to weave his magic – and didn’t he weave some magic over the HR’s insides. Let’ s get straight to the point, the ‘floating’ bucket seats are a game changer. With underside lighting, the grey leather seats appear to be levitating above the floor with no mounting visible. The same material was used on the custom doors, headlining and floors. The

hand-fabbed dash and centre console remain, albeit in the new colour scheme. Blown 6-packs aren’t what you’d call common, and even less so in 2007 when Ditch unveiled the HR to the horsepower hungry crowd at Summernats 20, so keep the blown six-pack in place was an easy decision, plus it’s an iconic piece of this build that people tend to remember. The 4/71-blown 202-cuber was given a freshen up and detailed to a higher standard than ever before.

Let’ s get straight to the point, the ‘floating’ bucket seats are a game changer.

54

Craig and Kristie’s own version of the HR has continued to haul in the awards at every show attended around the country, including several at Killer Rides Live #5 in Unanderra, where it also won a spot in the Top 3 and consequently the Showcar Master award along with the bragging rights too! The plan now is for the HR to return to Summernats 36 where Craig hopes to get the opportunity to go for Grand Champion, an award that has so far, eluded the HR in any of its visits to Canberra. Will 2024 be the year of the HR? We’ll soon see…

HEAVYMETAL HEAVY METAL

This story goes back to 2011 when Leigh found this Chevelle in Santa Maria, California. It was the perfect car for what he was looking for. With help from Justin Stoddard, the Chevelle was swapped for a bunch of cash, and promptly loaded into a shipping container for the long haul from the USA’s west coast to Australia’s east coast port of Brisbane.

After a life-changing medical experience, Leigh Moy decided it was time to get his dream car – a big, bad 1970 Chevelle!

Leigh Moy 1970 Chevelle Malibu

60

61

Having previously built a small block Chev powered LJ Torana and similarlypowered ’80 Jeep Renegade, Leigh knew what he was undertaking with the build, knowing full well it was going to consumed plenty of time and of course, lots of the folding stuff – especially for the driveline he had planned for the Chevelle. When the coupe arrived on Australian soil, Leigh wasted no time in shipping the rolling body off to Ipswich Panel & Paint for Mathew Cass to eliminate years of accumulated sheet metal issues in preparation for the new coat of paint. Leigh recalls that the body was in fair condition, so Mathew didn’t have a huge task ahead of him to get the Chevelle’s body in ‘as new’ condition. There was no chance of Mathew filling his spray gun with white paint to have the Chevelle looking like it did when it arrived from the US. Instead, Leigh opted for a more impressive Chrysler Midnight Blue from PPG. Against the chrome that these muscle cars are known for, the colour looks nothing short of sensational.

Inside, there’s even more blue to see, with the original interior recovered by Shannon Otto at Otto’s Custom Auto Trim. The split bench seat was kept in place as was the rear seats – each modified with more bolstering added for increased comfort compared to how flat they were way back in 1970. The factory shifter has been given the flick, replaced by a B&M Quicksilver unit. As for the dash, Leigh left the original facia untouched, but added an AutoMeter tacho with shift light and Innovate AFR gauge to the steering column, just behind the smaller alloy steering wheel. S/W oil and water dials were added to the lower section of the dash just in front of the shifter. And if you haven’t already noticed, the dash pad now sports the same blue vinyl as the seats and door trims. 62

63

But it’s under the bonnet that makes this Chevelle much tougher than any Chev engineer back in 1970 could have ever dreamed about. Whilst the Chevelle did have a box to tick on the original order paperwork for a 454-cube big block, but for Leigh, that’s just a starter for bigger and better things. Mark Jones, a Vortech Pro in Colorado in the USA pieced together this pumped big block sporting no less than 475-cubic inches that produced 590hp and 575 lbs of torque in aspirated form, but now there’s a V7 YSI Vortech blower hanging off the side of the big block, that figure will be made redundant, but as yet, the opportunity to dyno it in blown form hasn’t happened.

The engine is much more than a basic big block with a blower added. The original block has been updated with a 454 truck crank, Chev dimple rods with forged pistons and a cam profile that suits the blower setup perfectly. The cylinder heads are cast iron, large oval items that have been given a makeover with larger valves, bigger springs and better rockers. That big Vortech blower is connected to the engine via a blow-through APD 1000cfm carb and Edelbrock RPM airgap intake manifold. A complete MSD ignition system ignites the 98-octane fuel that gets forced into the blown Chev, with a pair of headers and dual three-inch exhaust dumping the gases with ease.

With help from Justin Stoddard, the Chevelle was swapped for a bunch of cash, cash, and promptly loaded into a shipping container...

64

65

Backing the pumped big block is a purpose-built Turbo 350 auto that features much tougher internals and a 3000rpm Coan converter. Leigh has kept his Chevelle all GM with a 12-bolt diff (with Eaton Posi Traction) bolted in position. Other underside improvements include QA1 springs and Edelbrock shocks on each corner giving the big coupe a much better feel on the road. Standard Chev brakes remain on each end inside the 15x7 and 15x8.5-inch Convo-Pro wheels.

That big Vortech blower is connected to the engine via a blow-through APD 1000cfm carb and Edelbrock RPM airgap intake manifold.

Since the Chevelle has been completed, Leigh has managed to snag quite a few show awards, but it’s on the road where Leigh enjoys the Chevelle the most, especially when he is out and about with the rest of the crew from the Lowlifes Kustom Car Club in Hervey Bay. And as much fun as he is currently having behind the wheel, that’s nothing compared to what it will be like when the new 540-cube engine is done and that blower setup is added to it! Good times ahead… 66

SPRINGIN’

Into Action!

Peter Pulford Turbo Harley Rigid Springer

Some people like their Harley’s to be all about the bling – chrome, polished alloy and candy paint. Out of all his bikes, and there’s quite a few, Peter Pulford’s favourite is his downright nasty, turbo-charged, tyre fryin’ rigid Springer – ratty paint and all 80

81

Back when Peter built this bike, he was spending his days (and some nights) inside his Peter Pulford Race Engines workshop, turning spanners on all kinds of high-performance cars and bikes – and in particular custom Harley’s, so it makes complete sense to see Peter having the keys to so many street and strip bikes in his Tool boxes top drawer. Fast forward a bunch of years and Peter’s now retired, living the life on a river-front property, but still tinkering on his and customer bikes when he feels like it. And yes, he still has a bunch of cool stock and custom Harleys, including this 60’s style rigid that he puts above all of his other bikes parked in the home garage… “There’s something about this bike that just does it for me!”, Peter said. Whether it’s the hassle-free finish on the tank and rear fender, or the wild turbocharged 100-cube S&S engine, I guess it doesn’t really matter. At the end of the day, this bike would be the very last one to go – that is if Peter needed to sell off his fleet…

82

83

The build started with a basic 60’s rigid frame that Peter modified to accept the 200mm, 5-speed gearbox and Springer front end. Whilst the Springer front has been chromed, there’s no shiny stuff attached to the frame itself, just a coat or two of flat black paint. The bars of choice are drag style with basic black grips and clutch lever. A small billet headlight completes the frame and frontend assembly. You’ll notice there’s no front brake lever, and that’s because there’s no front brake added to the 19x3.5-inch multi-

spoke front wheel. In stark contrast, the rear wheel is an RC Component billet item, measuring 16x6-inches with a 200 tyre. After all, Pete needs all the traction he can get. Not only is the front wheel missing a brake, there’s also no front fender. The rear tyre is covered by a basic Harley fender whilst the fuel tank used to call a sportster home. As mentioned, Pete loves the ratty look of this bike and the scratched, faded and well-worn yellow and black paint scheme adds the ultimate patina for this bad-ass Bike.

“There’s something about this bike that just does it for me!”, Peter said.

84

85

Now to the business side of the build – the full-tilt power plant. Peter got hold of a basic S&S V-twin and waved his magic over it. After upping the cubic capacity to 100ci, Peter also modified the cases, heads and S&S cylinders, adding Carillo rods and Wiseco pistons in the process. Getting the fuel in to the engine turn burn at a rapid rate is left up to a 48mm Weber carb, and after the fire is ignited by the Crane Hi4 adjustable ignition, the gases are shown the door via a small tail pipe that hangs off the back of the engine’s main feature – the custom turbo install that also includes the custom intercooler that is bolted at the front of the frame. With a smaller turbo in place, the V-twin made an impressive 250hp at the tyre. But with an upgraded turbo now in place, that figure has been increased considerably. An S&S-cased 5-speed gearbox is mated to the 100-cuber and utilise Andrews gears and a Barrett clutch to deal with power being pushed through it.

Pete launched the Harley hard at the flash of the green bulb and everything was going as planned, until the bike started steering towards the wall...

86

87

The bike was initially built to make an impression on the dyno, but Pete was talked into taking the rigid for a run down the quarter mile. Having spent plenty of time on the dragstrip behind the wheel of many cars and on bikes over the years, he was a little worried about how this was all going to go. Not convinced that it was a great idea, he maned up to the challenge anyway, and with some wheel bars added to the rear of the rigid frame, Pete launched the Harley hard at the flash of the green bulb and everything was going as planned, until the bike started steering towards the wall at warp speed. With the wall approaching fast and no other option available, Pete ditched the 88

bike before it hit the wall and carried on down the track, stopping the beams with a solid 10-sec ET. Peter soon followed on his back sliding through the beams. It may not have ended the way he had hoped, but man, it would have been impressive none the less! These days, the turbo rigid doesn’t see a lot of use as Pete has many other bikes at his disposal, but you will be able to get up close and personal with the bike at the rescheduled Hot Rod & Harley Expo, Feb 24/25, 2024 inside the Illawarra Hockey Centre. Make sure you’re there to check it out! THANKS TO: Corey, Jake, Gringo, Hammer Head, East Coast Customs and S&S. 89

Whilst not as big as the previous Vicla showing at Harley Heaven Tempe, the quality on show at their Blacktown store was nothing short of top shelf.

90

91

The bikes started rolling in well before the 11am official kick off time, and soon enough the entire front section of Harley Heaven’s Blacktown store was wall to wall Vicla’s in a display of colour and chrome that had visitors reaching for their sunnies, even under the cloudy, sometimes threatening skies. Vicla’s are all about the right stance, many featuring air-suspension systems front and rear to get the bike way down low. Colour choice is another consideration owners

92

need to go through when building their bikes. Whilst there were some black bikes on display (which still looks classy), many have tried to outdo everyone with all kinds of candy and graphic paint work on display. Likewise, engraving is now a big feature within the Vicla ranks. The painstaking task of attacking the chrome and alloy parts around various sections of the bike is certainly one way to gain plenty of attention – from both spectators and show judges.

93

For me, the coolest part of this event, was watching the guys ride their bikes in to the show. Standout bike’s likes like Fadi Raad’s stunning 100th Anniversary Springer, Bill Gazila’s amazing GOLOW, Nathan Spadaro’s custom CVO and Jason Spiteri’s oh-so-cool 2015 Slim, to name but a few, cruising from various parts of Sydney to Blacktown proving that even show quality builds still get ridden!

Vicla’s are all about the right stance, many featuring air-suspension systems front and rear to get the bike way down low.

94

95

The event was staged by Aussie Vicla’s and not only featured the bike show, but also discounts on gear inside Harley Heaven, a couple of Food Trucks sorting out those that needed lunch as well as Dizzle from Tattoo Asylum who will be available to add some cool ink to your skin. Overall, it was a great Saturday get together. Old friends caught up, new friendships were made and plenty of spectators made the trip to check out the stunning bikes on display. Next stop, the Aussie Vicla Nationals at Wodonga Racecourse, Dec 2nd. See you there. More info can be found at www.aussieviclas.com

DOIN’ IT

WORDS / PICS – PAUL BECK

! h g u o T

We’ve seen the ’34 Ford coupe built in various styles from 60’s Nostalgia to full-tilt Pro-Street. Tim Leggett however wanted his three-window coupe to be timeless in style, performance and attitude!

There’s something about a cool about a ’34 Ford Coupe. Next to the ’32, the ’33 and ‘34 three window coupes are probably the most popular of all Hot Rods globally. Part of the popularity can probably be traced back to ZZ Top who gave the nonRodding community a good look at their ’33 Ford “Eliminator” Coupe that not only featured on the cover of their 1983 Album

of the same name, but also in many video clips. For our man Tim, he wanted a ’34 3-window that wasn’t going to date, was able to hold its own at any show and was user-friendly enough to handle cruising through Sydney’s over populated streets. Tick, Tick, Tick. Like many in the Hot Rodding fraternity, Tim cut his teeth on Street Machines, having previously built an LX Torana.

Tim Leggett

1934 Ford 3-Window Coupe 100

101

When the decision to build a Hot Rod was made, he was on the phone straight away to Deuce Customs to order one of their ’34 3-window chopped fibreglass bodies with the associated panels attached. Tim also ordered a suitable chassis from Lilow Auto Tech that arrived with an independent front end and triangulated four-link. The body arrived in Gel Coat and are that good straight from the mould, that when it was sent to C-Us First Smash Repairs, there wasn’t a whole lot of work to do before colour could be laid onto the mocked-up body. With the body rubbed down and primed, it was time for colour. And what a colour! Tim wanted Red and opted for a stunning pearl red from the Protec range.

Against the polished 6-inch and 8-inch Billet Specialties wheels and all of the polished alloy on the exposed small block Chev, the colour really pops in all light! And as Tim had wished for, this isn’t a colour that will ever date. In 20-years-time, this will still be a stunning looking coupe. The body covers a chassis that is detailed like a show-only car and features the usual Lilow Auto Tech Chassis components including A1 adjustable coils overs on the front and rear, Commodore disc brakes on the front and Ford drums on the rear, all controlled by a GM master cylinder. There’s also power steering that connects to an Ididit billet steering column and makes cruising that much more comfortable.

The engine of choice is a 383-cube small block Chev that relies on a pair of 650 double-pumper Holley carbs mounted to a polished tunnel ram...

102

103

THANKS TO: Andrew McClelland, Ajay Astruc, John Walker from the Drag-ens Hot Rod Club, for piecing it all together. Gary Talbot, Glen Burns, Jeff and Paul at C-Us-First Smash Repairs for the body and paint. Paul Cooke for the awesome engine. Craig Parker for the detailing. Dave King at King Trim Upholstery for the interior. Aaron from APM for the dyno tuning sessions. Darryl Williams and Duck from Deuce Customs, and last but not least, Mum and Dad for putting up with my crap during the build period…

Before the body was bolted into place, the driveline was added to the detailed chassis. The engine of choice is a 383cube small block Chev that relies on a pair of 650 double-pumper Holley carbs mounted to a polished tunnel ram to be the hero-piece of the engine bay. The tough small block was built by Paul Cooke with reliable horsepower in mind. Aspirated engines are well known for their reliability and driveability, and this rammed small block is no different. A pair of AFR heads and billet rocker covers join with the polished ram and carbs to form an impressive top end to the stroked small block. Down below, the four-bolt block was kitted out with a Scat crank and rod combo along with

104

forged SRP pistons and rings, a cam and lifter kit from Crane and an ARP oil pump. All of this stuff is hidden away by the Aeroflow sump. An MSD ignition system lights the fire inside the small block with the spent gases guide out via a pair of headers that flow into a dual 3-inch system. Tim got his wish with the 383-cuber making 568hp whilst being totally reliable for regular street use! A turbo 400 auto, with a 3500rpm converter backs the stout small block, with gear changes taken care of via a B&M quick shifter. From there, the power goes rearwards to the 3.5-geared 9-inch diff with its billet axles and trutrac centre easily accounting for the grunt being passed through them.

105

To complete the build, Tim engaged Dave King from King Trim Upholstery handled the job of filling the coupe body with an interior that was a match in quality for the paint on the outside. Opting for a custom twotone grey, Dave covered the Glide bench seat, door trims and headlining to his usual show standard. Dave also installed the grey seat belts and the German weave carpet. Speedhut custom gauges fill the painted dash and sit behind the Billet Specialties

Outlaw steering wheel that tops the tilt, billet column. It’s taken around four-years and a bunch of the folding stuff to get the ’34 to the point where Tim is happy with the end result. In fact, this is just how Tim had envisaged the ’34 would look way back when he first picked up the phone to place the order for the body and chassis kit. And after winning a spot in the Top 10 at Valla and several other awards, Tim says he wouldn’t change a thing if he were to do it all again…

this isn’t a colour that will ever date. In 20-years-time, this will still be a stunning looking coupe! 106

The Mumbo Memorial Show and Shine saw hundreds of cool cars and bikes converge on Sandown Park Hotel as a tribute to Robert John Mummery, Mumbo to his many mates… Referred to by many as a gentleman of the Victorian Hot Rod and Kustom fraternity, Mumbo would have no doubt been looking over the collection of Street Machines, Classics. Hot Rods, Customs and bikes that had gathered together under clear skies to pay their respects. Even if they had never met Mumbo, the legend of the man was spread across the show and shine as many told stories that related to his time in the custom car scene…
