Dating back to 1913, the house was originally built by Lady Gordon, a lady of titled Irish lineage. Lady Gordon purchased the land on which the house now stands and began building “The House of my Dreams”. Lady Edith Gordon was also a keen gardener, traveller, and writer, who planted many trees and laid out a number of the original garden features. She wrote an account of her life entitled The Winds of Time in which she describes how she began her garden. Having fallen in love with the region and seeing the purchase of Ard na Sidhe as an opportunity not to be missed, the estate was purchased by the late Dr Hans Liebherr in 1958 and opened its doors as a luxury Country House Hotel in 1961.
