PAGESIX Killarney councillor Martin Grady has called for an urgent review of traffic management across the town following severe delays along the Muckross Road during the morning rush hour. Constituents living along Muckross Road, Woodlawn, and outer Muckross areas raised serious concerns with the local representative, reporting that motorists now face delays of over 30 minutes to travel from Flesk Bridge or Woodlawn Cross into Killarney town. The situation is causing major disruption for parents doing school runs and commuters traveling to work every morning. “This level of congestion is simply not acceptable,” said Cllr Grady. “I have been contacted by constituents who are experiencing significant delays every morning, with parents trying to get their children to school and people trying to commute into work being caught in traffic for prolonged periods.” Cllr Grady urged Kerry County Council to look closely at the operation and light sequencing along the route. “I am calling for a review of the traffic situation along the Muckross Road, including the operation and sequencing of the traffic lights and whether there are any other obstructions or traffic management issues contributing to the delays,” he said. He stressed that the gridlock is not isolat-

ed to one approach road, but affects the entire urban area as population and traffic volumes continue to rise year on year. “But this issue goes beyond the Muckross Road. Killarney as a whole is experiencing increasing levels of traffic congestion across the town. The people of Killarney

have been suffering with traffic for far too long, and the situation is getting worse,” Cllr Grady said. “Our population is growing and traffic volumes are increasing year on year. We need to look at the bigger picture and develop a proper traffic management plan

for Killarney. We need to identify where the problems are, examine how traffic is being managed across the town and put measures in place to improve traffic flow. The current situation has gone beyond what is acceptable for residents, commuters and visitors to Killarney.”

Deerpark Retail Park placed on market for €15m Deerpark Retail Park in Killarney has officially been placed on the market with a guide price in excess of 15.4 million euro, excluding VAT. International real estate firm Cushman & Wakefield has been appointed as the sole sales agent to handle the high-profile commercial property sale on behalf of its current owner, Investcorp. Investcorp, a global investment management firm headquartered in Bahrain, had previously acquired the prominent shopping complex. The sale represents one of the largest commercial property offerings to launch in County Kerry this year. Located roughly 1.3 kilometres west of Killarney town centre, the scheme enjoys strong regional connectivity and sits adjacent to independently owned operations including a Tesco Extra store, a Tesco petrol filling station, JYSK, and Aldi. Constructed in 2006, the development extends across approximately 10,482 square metres, or 112,835 square feet.

The scheme comprises a mix of modern retail warehouse units and a complementary neighbourhood centre, offering 13 individual units in total with Part Open and Part Bulky Use planning permission. The units range in size from 94.6 square metres up to 1,994.9 square metres. Visitors have access to approximately 248 customer parking spaces across the commercial grounds. The park is currently 100 per cent occupied by a strong line-up of established national and international brands. Key retail tenants include Marks & Spencer, Boots, DID Electrical, Maxi Zoo, and Mountain Warehouse. The neighbourhood centre element accommodates service and convenience operators such as Costa Coffee, Card Factory, and Salon B. The first-floor accommodation is fully let to Peak Performance Academy, which provides additional rental diversification. Additionally, the scheme benefits from an agreement with Tesla to operate eight electric vehicle charging

bays within the customer car park. Commercial figures show that the property generates a total current rental income of 1,326,458 euro per annum, with a weighted average unexpired lease term of 4.45 years to break options and 6.46 years to lease expiry. Cushman & Wakefield noted that the quoted guide

price of 15.4 million euro reflects a net initial yield of 7.83 per cent, assuming standard purchaser costs of 9.96 per cent. The selling agents highlighted that the fully occupied asset offers investors an attractive income profile alongside scope for additional income generation through parking commercialisation.

An Garda Síochána, Iarnród Éireann, Transport Infrastructure Ireland, and Kerry County Council put new safety enforcement cameras into operation at the Farranfore level crossing this week. The GoSafe system, which went live at 12pm on Tuesday, October 6, automatically detects vehicles running red lights or breaking the speed limit as they approach and cross the railway track. Farranfore is only the second level crossing on the national rail network to feature the technology, following a trial at Merrion Gates in Dublin where driver compliance reached 99.7 per cent. Up to six crossing locations nationwide are slated to receive the units. The system targets two distinct traffic violations. Proceeding past a stop line when red lights are flashing carries an automated Fixed Charge Notice of €80 and two penalty points, rising to five penalty

9.10.2026

Speed cameras go live at Farranfore level crossing points upon court conviction. Speeding violations trigger a €160 fine and three penalty points, which can increase to five points and fines up to €1,000 if prosecuted in court. Iarnród Éireann highlighted excessive approach speed as a key safety factor at the Farranfore junction. Nationwide, 31 incidents involving vehicles or bicycles colliding with automated level crossing gates have occurred in 2026 to date, up from 23 in 2025. Highlighting the risk to local road users, Road Safety Officer with Kerry County Council Declan Keogh said: "The new safety cameras at Farranfore railway crossing serve as a dual-safety mechanism, for road users and for rail users and operators. I would urge all motorists to think twice before taking that chance to get across the railway line when the warning lights have activated and the barriers are lowering. All too often those

chances have proved unsuccessful, with serious consequences." Iarnród Éireann Chief Executive Mary Considine noted that interfaces between road and rail traffic represent one of the primary safety risks on the network, adding that automated cameras encourage drivers to reduce speed and obey active signals. Assistant Commissioner Ferry of the Garda National Roads Policing Bureau welcomed the joint venture, stating that technology-led enforcement will significantly assist in maintaining safety across shared transport networks.

50KM/H ZONE ENFORCED AT FARRANFORE

Motorists traveling through Farranfore are reminded that the speed limit on the approach to and across the railway crossing is strictly 50km/h. While automated safety

systems enforce both signal compliance and vehicle speed, the 50km/h limit remains the maximum legal speed on the N22 section approaching the crossing gates. The newly activated GoSafe cameras record vehicle speeds automatically in both directions. Any motorist detected exceeding the 50km/h threshold will automatically receive a €160 Fixed Charge Notice alongside three penalty points applied to their driving licence. Local authorities and Gardaí advise drivers approaching Farranfore from both the Tralee and Killarney directions to adjust their driving speed early, monitor active signals, and prepare to stop safely when warning lights activate.

Town encouraged to wear bright colours for Kevin The town of Killarney was encouraged to wear its brightest colours this week to honour the memory of one of its most beloved sons following the sudden and unexpected passing of Kevin Looney on Tuesday. A familiar sight walking the streets of Killarney and his adopted home of Tralee alongside his wife Katie, Kevin was widely known for his bright personality, athletic talent, and involvement with local sports organisations.

A gifted athlete and dedicated leader, Kevin served for many years as captain of the Kerry Stars Special Olympics basketball team, leading the side to back-toback tournament victories in Little Island, Cork, in 2023. Beyond his success on the court, he was a talented runner with an 18-minute 5k record, a keen soccer player with ambitions for Kerry FC, and a head designer who created custom sports gear for his clubs. Tributes have poured in for the young man, whose kindness, dedication, and enthusiasm left a lasting mark on team-

mates, coaches, and the wider community. Kevin is survived by his wife Katie, his mother Carmel, his sisters Selina, Carmel-Ann, and Frankie, his brothers Darren and Tommy-Dan, his granddad Dan McCarthy, and his nephews Sean, Noah, and Theo, along with his extended family, neighbours, and friends. His removal took place on Thursday evening at O'Shea's Funeral Home, Killarney. Funeral mass takes place this morning, Friday, at 10am at St Mary's Cathedral, with burial afterwards in Aghadoe Lawn Cemetery. Mourners attending the service have been asked to wear bright colours in Kevin's memory. Family flowers only, with donations in lieu, if desired, to Epilepsy Ireland.

Racecourse hosts first festive pantomime A classic fairytale is set to receive a distinct Kerry makeover this festive season as Killarney Racecourse hosts the town’s first professional pantomime, Cinderella.

IDENTITY EXPLORED: Kerry artist Felix Power, who brings his interactive art project 'Where's the I in Ireland?' to the ANAM Centre on East Avenue Road this Saturday,at 2.30pm.

Artist explores Irish identity at ANAM

Running across 12 performances over four weekends in November and December, the production weaves iconic local landmarks directly into the story. In this festive adaptation, Cinderella dreams of escaping her chores inside Ross Castle before receiving news of a royal ball hosted at Muckross House. Her journey is guided by Molls, a fairy godmother arriving from beyond the Gap of Dunloe, while the adventure takes audiences straight through the enchanted woods of Killarney National Park. Directed by Lily MacMonagle of The MACademy Performing Arts and choreographed by Katrina Galvin of Sparrow Dance Academy, the production features a cast of local talent bringing the story to life. Speaking about the upcoming debut production, Karl McCay, General Manager of Killarney Racecourse, expressed his excitement for the launch. "We are thrilled to announce our first-ever Christmas Show at Killarney

Racecourse. Killarney already sets the standard for festive celebrations with its magical parades, Santa’s grotto, Christmas markets, and Killarney on Ice. We are delighted to build on this tradition with our debut production of Cinderella. Directed by Lily MacMonagle and featuring a wonderfully talented local cast, we can’t wait to welcome you to this exciting new holiday experience." Director Lily MacMonagle emphasized the broad appeal of the festive show for families across the region. "We are so delighted to bring the first professional panto to Killarney for families to enjoy this Christmas. The team and cast involved are incredible, and we cannot wait to sprinkle Christmas panto magic all over Killarney and Kerry this year. The laughs are like no other - it’s made for your child and your granny, with a joke and a dance for everyone. On a personal note, it’s fantastic to offer a pre-Christmas show where families can come together and really get into the festive spirit." Tickets go on sale today (Friday, October 9), at 9am via the Killarney Racecourse website, priced at €17 for children, €20 for adults, and €66 for a family ticket.

Kerry artist Felix Power is inviting the Killarney community to explore personal ideas of identity, belonging, and Irishness at a free interactive afternoon event this weekend.

Titled Where's the I in Ireland?, the project takes place on Saturday, October 10, at the ANAM Centre on East Avenue Road, starting at 2.30pm. The initiative centres around 21 questions regarding personal identity and participants' complex relationships with Ireland. Over 2025 and 2026, groups across Dublin, Cork, and Kerry participated in sessions structured as part research project, part table quiz, and part bingo night, offering lighthearted moments alongside genuine personal reflection. During the session, Felix Power and guest facilitators will guide attendees through thoughts on their own personal journeys, sharing notable responses gathered from previous events across the country. Attendees complete anonymous survey cards answering the core questions, with no expectation to speak publicly or share stories out loud. Those who wish to can hand in their cards at the end for inclusion in upcoming public installations. A pop-up exhibition featuring previous

written responses from past participants will also be on display inside the venue, showing the varied ways people move towards or away from traditional ideas of Irishness. "What emerges is far from a unified voice or consensus," stated Felix Power. "I see it as a beautiful cacophony, a hectic dawn chorus of differing voices, diverse journeys and unique understandings." Power, a graduate of MTU Cork’s MA in Arts and Engagement, has a background spanning visual art, sculpture, live performance, and film. His work focusses heavily on creating participatory spaces that combine playfulness with authentic dialogue about local culture and place. The event is open to everyone regardless of background or nationality. Supported by Creative Ireland and the Kerry County Council Arts Office, admission is entirely free. While a limited number of entry passes will be available at the door on the day, advance online booking is encouraged to assist organisers with capacity monitoring.

Chef missing for 34 years located dead in London A 34-year search for missing former Killarney chef Patrick (Patsy) O'Sullivan ended following confirmation that he was located deceased in the UK. Patsy was 35 years old when last seen by relatives in Lombardstown, County Cork, during the Easter Bank Holiday weekend in April 1992. At the time of his disappearance, he was working as a chef in Waterville, having previously worked across several Killarney hotels. He was scheduled to attend a family Christening shortly after returning from Kerry, but never arrived. Despite decades of public appeals, including features on RTÉ's Crimecall, his location remained unknown. Investigations revealed that Patsy moved to the UK and changed his name to Patrick Aldridge in 1995, adopting the surname of his partner who passed away

in 2022. He passed away from natural causes on July 5, 2024, living just over an hour away from his brother who also passed away in the UK last year. Speaking on Cork's 96FM, his brother Jerry O'Sullivan confirmed the family finally received closure following renewed efforts led by Garda PJ Roche and investigating officers. He noted that while unanswered questions remain about why Patsy started over fresh, the family is grateful for the work that brought final answers. An Garda Síochána confirmed the missing person case is closed and thanked the public for their assistance over the years.

Dr Crokes stalwarts enjoy lake cruise

Dr Crokes GAA Club hosted a special day out for its senior members on Monday, this week, taking a group aged between 70 and 90 on a cruise across the Lakes of Killarney. Organised by the Dr Crokes Healthy Club committee under its Crokes Cruisers initiative, the event was held to recognise the lifetime contribution made by long-standing members who continue to support club activities behind the scenes. The group travelled on two vessels, including An Cathal, an open boat op-

erated by local brothers Tony and Mike Fleming. Built to preserve the traditional Killarney lake boat style, it is the only purpose-built, fully accessible boat on the lakes, allowing members with mobility issues and wheelchair users to safely join the two-hour trip. Following the lake tour, the party gathered on shore for coffee and refreshments provided by Derric McMahon and Harry Clifton of the Ross Castle Garden Cafe. The initiative forms part of the club’s ongoing community work as a Gold Award winner in the GAA Healthy Club programme.

LOCAL GOLD: Terrie O'Shea, founder and owner of Killarney-based business Sorella Berries, celebrating her Gold award win at the Blas na hÉireann Irish Food Awards held in Dingle last week. Her hand-crafted chocolate covered strawberries secured the top spot in national competition, earning recognition for the local food producer on the national stage.

KWD Recycling shortlisted for national environmental awards Killarney-based KWD Recycling has been announced as a finalist in the 2026 Repak Resource Awards, securing a spot on the national shortlist for environmental achievement.

The local waste management company has been nominated in the Best Recovery Operator Innovation category, sponsored by DNV, for its state-of-the-art residual waste recovery system. The Killarney facility utilizes optical

sorting, screening, and mechanical processing to extract recyclable plastics and organic material from municipal waste. In its first year of operation, the technology recovered more than 10 per cent of plastic packaging from residual

waste for recycling and diverted almost 50 per cent of organic material toward composting. KWD Recycling will compete alongside Dublin operators Panda and Thorntons Recycling for the category title. Repak CEO Zoe Kavanagh commended the Kerry firm for demonstrating environmental leadership and bringing local ambition to the national awards.

Category winners will be announced at a black-tie ceremony at the Mansion House in Dublin on Friday, October 23, where each winner will also compete for the Overall Repak Resource Award. Local businesses have a strong track record at the national event, with Killarney town venue The Killarney Park and The Ross previously taking home the overall title in 2023.

Drishane Class of ’72 gather in Killarney for biennial reunion Past pupils of the Leaving Certificate Class of 1972 from Drishane Convent Boarding School in Millstreet rekindled lifelong friendships when they gathered for their traditional class reunion dinner at Randles Hotel. The special gathering marked another memorable chapter in a long-standing tradition organised by past pupil and renowned photographer Michelle Cooper Galvin, who brings her former classmates together every two years.

The venue holds a warm, personal connection for the group, as the Randles family shares strong historical ties with Drishane Convent; sisters Bernadette, Susan, and Rosemary are all alumnae, while their late mother, Kay Randles, was also a past pupil of the historic school. Classmates travelled from across Cork and Kerry to attend the reunion dinner, while two dedicated past pupils flew in directly from Johannesburg, South Africa, ensuring the spirit of the Class of ’72 remains as strong as ever.

Local hotels' top rankings in Readers’ Choice Awards

Two leading Killarney hotels are celebrating major international accolades following the publication of the 2026 Condé Nast Traveler Readers’ Choice Awards.

The Killarney Royal Townhouse was named the No. 2 Hotel in Ireland in the US edition of the global awards, securing top placement among the country’s finest properties based entirely on votes cast by international travellers. Pat McGrath, General Manager of Killarney Royal Townhouse, expressed his pride in the achievement: "We are absolutely delighted to be recognised as the No. 2 Hotel in Ireland in Condé Nast Traveler’s 2026 Readers’ Choice Awards. To receive this recognition directly from travellers makes it particularly special, and we are immensely proud of our team, whose genuine care, warm welcome and attention to detail shape the guest experience every day." Meanwhile, sister property The Killarney Park achieved a double success in this year's voting, earning inclusion across both Atlantic editions of the prestigious travel guide. The family-owned venue was ranked No. 8 in the US Readers’ Choice Awards and No. 5 in the UK Readers’ Choice Awards. The annual awards represent one of the travel industry's longest-running honors, with almost 800,000 readers submitting votes to rate their favorite global travel experiences. Marcus Treacy, Managing Director of The Killarney Park, welcomed the dual honors: "Recognition such as this means a great deal to us because it comes directly from the people who have spent their time

GLOBAL RECOGNITION: Killarney Royal Townhouse General Manager Pat McGrath and The Killarney Park Managing Director Marcus Treacy celebrate top rankings in the 2026 Condé Nast Traveler Readers’ Choice Awards.

with us. As a family-owned hotel, knowing that what we have created here in Killarney continues to resonate with guests travelling from around the world is something we are enormously proud of." The strong showing by both local venues underlines Killarney's standing as a world-class hospitality hub for international visitors.

The event, titled Recording the Past: Annals of Inisfallen and the Making of Irish History, marks the manuscript's return to Ireland for just the second time since 1983. The original bound document, on loan from Oxford University’s Bodleian Library, is currently on public display at The Glucksman Gallery at University College Cork until November 1. Written on 57 vellum leaves, the chronicle documents over 1,000 years of Irish history in a mix of Latin and Irish, focusing heavily on Munster. The entries were compiled primarily by monks at the island monastery of Inisfallen on Lough Leane, an important seat of European learning founded in 631 by St Faithleann. NPWS Regional Manager Pat Dawson will open the conference at 9.00am, with

welcoming addresses by Mayor of Killarney Cllr John O’Donoghue and Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce Vice President Carol Dempsey. Guest speakers including Pádraig Ó Macháin, Nessa O’Connor, John Gillis, Edel Breathnach, and Nollaig Ó Muraíle will deliver presentations covering archaeological finds on the island, medieval bookbinding techniques, and historical insights from the text. The conference runs from 9.00am to 5.00pm.

Planning approval has been granted for a long-awaited lakeside walkway and cycleway connecting Torc and Dinis inside Killarney National Park. An Coimisiún Pleanála confirmed permission for the elevated platform project, which will complete the popular scenic loop while removing a dangerous 800-metre section along the busy N71 Killarney to Kenmare road. Walkers and cyclists currently have to navigate narrow bends alongside heavy vehicular traffic and tour buses to complete the circuit between the Dinis and Torc car parks. Mayor of Killarney John O'Donoghue welcomed the decision, calling it a transformative development for the region:

9.10.2026

Green light for Torc to Dinis walkway "Since beginning in the Council in 2021, this has been one of my priorities as an issue I inherited from my predecessor Michael Gleeson, he being the first person to initially pursue the idea. I have repeatedly kept it on the agenda at Council meetings and now delighted to see we finally have positive news as this decision, which has been long overdue and eagerly awaited, will prove transformative for the area."

Mayor O'Donoghue added: "The path, which will be on the lakeside, will offer views to rival those anywhere in the world and I have no doubt will prove very popular with locals and visitors alike. Huge credit is due to Kerry County Council and the NPWS for their co-operation on the issue. Once the decision has passed through its statutory waiting period, the design and tender stage can

begin." The project, which will be built on a raised platform to protect the natural habitat beneath, will also be fully accessible for people with mobility issues. Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce also welcomed the green light, noting that the completed loop will create a major safe attraction showcasing Muckross Lake, Dinis Cottage, and the Old Weir Bridge.

LAKESIDE PATH: An Coimisiún Pleanála has approved planning permission for a new raised walkway and cycleway connecting Torc and Dinis in Killarney National Park.

PAINT LIKE A PRO:

OUR TIPS FOR DECORATING WITH NEUTRAL COLOURS

| By Craig Locke

Manager, Pat McDonnell Paints – Tralee

Decorating with neutrals is a timeless approach that creates a beautiful foundation for any interior. Read on for our top tips on choosing neutrals for your home. Subtle and sophisticated, neutral paint colours suit almost any decorating style. They provide a versatile foundation that can be layered with stronger colours while allowing artwork, furnishings and architectural features to really shine. Our Top Tips for Working with Neutrals

LIGHTING & ASPECT

The direction a room faces and the

amount of natural and artificial light it receives can significantly affect how a colour appears. North-facing rooms tend to have cooler light and can benefit from a neutral with a warming undertone, such as Farrow & Ball’s White Tie. In a space with warmer light, a neutral with a cooler undertone, such as Colourtrend’s Arctic Blonde, can work beautifully. Our Tralee Colour Consultant, Jules McElligott, recommends considering the light in your room before making a final decision. “A neutral can look very different depending on the aspect of the room and even at different times of the day. Testing your chosen colours in the space is one of the best ways to make sure you’re happy with the result.”

Alternatively, introduce colour through artwork, accessories, soft furnishings and furniture. Against a neutral backdrop, even small additions of colour can make an impact.

Choosing a soft, light shade can create a sense of cosiness while keeping the space bright and airy. You could also bring colour onto the ceiling, the oftenforgotten ‘fifth wall’.

ADD TEXTURE

RECOMMENDED NEUTRAL COLOUR PALETTES

INCORPORATE POPS OF COLOUR

DON'T JUST LIMIT COLOUR TO THE WALLS

Adding pops of colour can bring personality and visual interest to a neutral scheme. Try an accent wall, painted wall panelling or a vibrant wallpaper.

Texture is particularly important when decorating with neutrals. As Jules advises, “Think about mixing different finishes and materials, hard and soft, rough and smooth, matt and reflective. Wood, metal, glass and natural textiles can all add warmth and interest to a neutral room.” Linen, velvet, cushions, throws and rugs can also introduce layers of texture without taking away from the calm feeling of the overall scheme.

If you want to try something different, consider ‘colour drenching’. This involves using the same colour across walls and trim to create an elegant, cohesive effect.

When helping customers choose neutrals, Jules recommends looking beyond one individual shade. “Using tints, tones and shades from the same colour family can give a room a really considered, designer feel while still keeping the overall scheme calm and cohesive.” Whether you’re decorating a whole house or refreshing a single room, try: A green-tinged palette: Perfect Light, Sea Grass, Olive Leaf and Bookworm by Ralston A soothing white scheme: School House White, Shadow White, Shaded White and Drop Cloth by Farrow & Ball A cool, Scandi-inspired palette: Chiltern White, Romney Wool, Quartz Grey and Pebble Grey from Dulux Heritage

Killarney National Park Autumn Talks up and running Following a successful opening presentation by award-winning photographer James Crombie on the mesmerising starling murmuration’s of Lough Ennell, the 38th annual Killarney National Park Autumn Talks Series continues next week with a focus on Irish biodiversity. Series continues next week with a focus on Irish biodiversity. The lineup for Thursday, October 15, features guest speaker Professor Grace McCormack of University College Galway, who will present a talk on "The Importance of Native Honeybees and Other Pollinators and Current Threats to Their Survival". Prof. McCormack's address will explore the vital role native bees play in local ecosystems, the environmental pressures threatening their populations, and the conservation efforts required to ensure their survival. Last night’s (October 8) opening talk, saw Inpho Sports Photography staff photographer James Crombie kick off the sixweek series. Crombie, named Irish Press Photographer of the Year in 2021, 2022, and 2025,

Drivers warned as deer rutting season begins shared the story behind his famous images documenting Westmeath's starling displays, which reached millions of viewers worldwide. The Autumn Talks Series runs weekly for six weeks in the Killarney House Auditorium (V93 HE3C) at 8.00pm. Admission is free, though seating is limited. All presentations are also live streamed via the Killarney National Park Facebook page.

Motorists in Killarney are being urged to exercise extreme caution as the annual deer rutting season gets underway, causing animals to stray far beyond their usual habitats inside Killarney National Park. The autumn mating season sees deer becoming highly active and unpredictable, leading to increased sightings and collisions on local roads outside traditional park boundaries. Two separate incidents highlighted the growing hazard on local routes this week. A reader contacted the Killarney Advertiser to warn drivers after spotting a deer roaming near Tiernaboul towards the school on Sunday afternoon around 7.30pm.

Later that same night, in the early hours of Monday morning, a local driver collided with a deer near Kerry Airport around 1am while returning home from an event. Despite attempting evasive action, the motorist struck the animal, which died at the scene and temporarily blocked the road before local Gardaí were alerted to clear the obstruction. The driver sustained substantial vehicle damage, requiring repairs to the bumper, headlamp, and internal components, leaving her facing significant garage costs and time off the road. Gardaí and road safety advocates advise motorists traveling during early morning and late evening and remain vigilant along tree-lined routes.

Safe routes plan for The Mon The Mon National School, has been selected for inclusion in the latest round of the national Safe Routes to School programme. The New Road primary school is one of three Kerry institutions chosen under Round 5 of the nationwide initiative, alongside Firies National School and Scartaglin National School. The initiative aims to create safer travel conditions for pupils walking, cycling, and wheeling to school each day. Planned infrastructure upgrades will include traffic calming measures, front-of-school safety zones, widened footpaths, and improved pedestrian crossings around the New Road campus.

School management will work alongside Kerry County Council engineers and dedicated infrastructure officers to assess traffic patterns and design safety improvements tailored to the local road network. Funded by the Department of Transport through the National Transport Authority, the programme has expanded to include over 600 primary and secondary schools across Ireland. Local Fianna Fáil TD Michael Cahill welcomed the funding allocation for the county, noting that the planned works will deliver vital road safety improvements for pupils, parents, and school staff across the three local communities.

The fundraising total will fund up to 143 hours of specialized nursing care and respite support for Jack and Jill families in Kerry and across Ireland. Held at PAR 72, the hotel's TrackMan golf simulator suite, the charity drive formed part of the Today FM Power Hour fundraiser with presenter Ian Dempsey. Participant entries raised €1,425 on the morning, a sum subsequently matched by hotel directors Eamon and John O’Donoghue to double the final total. Kerry GAA stars past and present turned out to support the event, including

Paudie Clifford, Gavin White, and Eoin Brosnan, joining local golfers, supporters, and members of Dr Crokes GAA Club. Competitors were given five attempts to land closest to the pin on a virtual simulation of the 16th hole at Adare Manor, the par-three hole playing across the River Maigue ahead of the resort hosting the Ryder Cup in 2027. Local golfer John Morley claimed top spot on the leaderboard, winning an overnight stay and dinner at the Killarney venue. General Manager Neil Grant praised the local response to the event: "Jack and Jill does vital work for families across Ireland, and we were delighted to play our part in Power Hour. Thank you to everyone who came along and gave so generously. PAR 72 has been such a great addition to the hotel, and it was brilliant to see it being put to use for such a worthwhile cause."

A colourful collaboration between the Kerry Local Creative Youth Partnership (LCYP) and the Architecture Kerry Festival at Kerry County Council launched yesterday evening at College Square. Titled Streetscapes, the open-air public art installation officially opened at 5pm on Thursday, accompanied by a performance from the Killarney Youth Drumming Band THUMP! under the guidance of Urs Wenk from Drum Dance Ireland. The public art project features a series of wall murals depicting Killarney through the eyes of local children, exploring freedom, play, and potential future evolutions of the townscape. The artworks reimagine Killarney's iconic landmarks and streets, blending youthful imagination and curiosity. Supported under the Creative Ireland Programme, the installation is mounted on the gable wall of Reen’s Life Pharmacy in College Square, where it will remain on public display until March 2027. Speaking at the launch, Daniel O’Shea, Youth Development Officer at Kerry ETB, stated: “Streetscapes is a wonderful celebration of how children see things. Their creativity brings new perspectives to the townscape, and we are proud to support their ideas and their art through this public artwork.”

Deirdre Enright, Co-Ordinator of the Local Creative Youth Partnership at Kerry ETB, acknowledged the community support behind the initiative: “We are very grateful to Reen’s Life Pharmacy who have shared their built space with us. Huge credit is due to the artistic team from Me+The Moon whose dedication to creativity and to children’s art shine through in this work.” The project forms part of the annual Architecture Kerry Festival and receives funding through Creative Ireland and the Department of Education and Youth via Kerry ETB and Kerry County Council. Victoria McCarthy, Festival Organiser and Architectural Conservation Officer at Kerry County Council, welcomed the continued inter-agency project: "It’s always a great event for Architecture Kerry and we are so pleased with this collaboration between public sector organisations. It remains a key feature of the Architecture Kerry programme." See next week’s Killarney Advertiser for full photographic coverage of the event.

SPSL student awarded scholarship

Scoil Phobail Sliabh Luacha, Rathmore, is celebrating the outstanding achievement of Leaving Cert 2026 student Eoin Cashman, who has been awarded a prestigious Naughton Scholarship, valued at €24,000 towards his studies in STEM.

Eoin’s exceptional academic ability, dedication and commitment have earned him this remarkable recognition. A truly talented scholar, Eoin continues to make the school community extremely proud. SPSL extends its warmest congratulations to Eoin on this fantastic achievement and wishes him every success in his future studies and career. Eoin’s STEM journey has included outstanding success at SciFest 2025, where he worked alongside fellow students Alex Thompson and Kamil Zoltek on an innovative project exploring planetary environments

through the analysis of ballistic dust motion. Their project, titled “Quantitative Analysis of Physical Environmental Characteristics through the Observation of the Ballistic Motion of Lofted Dust Particles,” investigated whether the movement of dust particles could be used to determine physical properties such as acceleration due to gravity and atmospheric density. Using video analysis software, the students examined footage from NASA’s Apollo 16 mission, analysing the dust cloud created by the Lunar Roving Vehicle on the surface of the Moon. They also examined Earthbased footage for comparison. Their analysis produced a calculated lunar gravitational acceleration within 5.85% of the accepted value, while their model for atmospheric density on Earth was within 6.7% of the reported value.x

A WEEKLY ROUND-UP OF NEWS • VIEWS FROM KERRY AND AROUND THE WORLD

INSPIRED BY DANNY CASEY

New savings scheme coming next summer The Government’s new Investment Account has been broadly welcomed, with a €50,000 tax-free threshold and an annual contribution limit of €12,000 announced ahead of Budget 2027. From July 2027, investments above the €50,000 threshold will face a 1% annual tax. However, the existing eight-year deemed disposal rule will not apply, nor will the 1% insurance levy. The removal of deemed disposal has

been described as a significant and positive step, while the €50,000 threshold provides investors with substantial room to build a portfolio before the tax applies. However, concerns remain over the €12,000 annual contribution limit and the decision not to allow unused allowances to be carried forward. There are also questions over the 18-plus age restriction, with calls for similar accounts to be available to children. Ivan Dunne, Head of Financial Services, Campion In-

surance raised concern over the 1% tax will be based on the value of the account rather than investment gains, meaning investors could potentially face a tax bill even after their investments fall. The new account will also be exempt from Capital Gains Tax, Dividend Withholding Tax, Investment Undertaking Tax and Life Assurance Exit Tax. The scheme is being viewed as a strong starting point, but further details on fees, losses and where investments ultimately flow will be closely watched.

New learner permit rules to take effect from November 1 New rules for Irish learner permit holders will come into effect on November 1st, affecting both existing and new drivers. Under the changes, people renewing a learner permit for a third time must have sat a driving test within the previous two years and provide a failure certificate. Those renewing for a fourth time will also need to have taken a driving test within two years and provide a statement of failure. A fourth renewal will be valid for just one year. People currently on their fourth or subsequent learner permit will no longer be able to renew it and will instead have to restart the learning-to-drive process. This means retaking the Driver Theory Test, applying for a new learner permit and completing the required Essential Driver Training (EDT), or Initial Basic Training (IBT) for motorcyclists, before taking another driving test. Learner permit holders whose permit has been expired for two years or more on or after November 1 will also have to restart the driving process.

IKEA launches second-hand marketplace in Ireland IKEA has launched a new second-hand marketplace in Ireland, allowing customers to buy and sell pre-owned IKEA furniture directly from one another. The online service, launched on Wednesday, aims to make it easier for people to pass on furniture they no longer need while giving shoppers access to more affordable and discontinued IKEA products. The launch follows new research from IKEA which found that 93% of adults in Ireland shop for second-hand goods. Of those, 58% said saving money or stretching their household budget was a key motivation. Irish homes contain an average of €531 worth of unused furniture, while unused

home décor and accessories are estimated to be worth a further €347. Customers can scan eligible IKEA products to create listings, with the platform providing product photographs, measurements, descriptions, assembly instructions and care information. Sellers can receive payment in cash or choose an IKEA digital refund card with a 15% bonus. The marketplace excludes mattresses, appliances, food, modified and recalled products. IKEA said prices on the marketplace are, on average, 60% lower than comparable new products. The launch follows IKEA Ireland’s €6 million investment to reduce prices on 457 popular products by up to 25% nationwide.

Irish beef served in Vietnam for first time Irish beef has been served in Vietnam for the first time, marking a significant milestone for Ireland’s beef industry. Vietnam was identified as a priority growth market by Ireland in 2017, with market access for Irish beef opening in January 2026. The country’s population of more than 100 million and growing middle class offer significant opportunities for Irish farmers and exporters. Bord Bia officially launched Irish beef in Ho Chi Minh City this week with a butchery demonstration by John Stone Fine Foods, followed by a tasting for

Vietnamese chefs, restaurant owners, distributors and media. Ronan Cunniffe, Deputy Head of Mission at the Embassy of Ireland in Vietnam, said the opening marked “a new chapter” in Ireland-Vietnam trade relations. Bord Bia said demand for imported beef is growing, particularly across Vietnam’s expanding foodservice sector, including hotpot, Korean and Japanese barbecue restaurants. The market opening is supported by the EU-Vietnam Free Trade Agreement, providing Irish beef with tariff-free access.

Irish acappella group Ardú to appear on The Voice UK Irish acappella group Ardú will return to The Voice UK this Saturday, October 10, for the show’s battle round. The six-piece group secured a chair turn from coach Will.i.am during their blind audition last month, progressing to the next stage of the competition. Ardú will now compete against another contestant for a place in the semi-final, performing in front of Will.i.am and guest coach Cheryl Cole. The group is the first Irish acappella en-

semble and the largest group to compete on The Voice UK. Following their television appearance, Ardú will embark on a three-date co-headline tour with British a cappella group The Apex Singers. The tour begins at the Whale Theatre in Greystones on October 30, followed by an appearance at Púca Festival in Trim on October 31 and a performance at dlr Mill Theatre in Dublin on November 1. Ardú have also released a new mashup single, ‘Fool / Power Over Me’, ahead of a new album due later this year.

Today is World Egg Day! Today is for celebrating a popular Irish delicacy - Eggs. Today is national world egg day. Eggs remain a firm favourite in Irish households, with 72% of homes buying them every week, according to new research from Bord Bia. Irish consumers are expected to purchase almost 705 million eggs this year, an increase of 2.7% on 2025 figures. To mark the 30th anniversary of World Egg Day, Bord Bia has teamed up with registered nutritionist Aileen Cox Blundell, chefs Trisha Lewis and Rachel Allen, and Olympian Derval O’Rourke to highlight the nutritional value and versatility of eggs carrying the Bord Bia Quality Mark. The campaign will see the ambassadors share recipes and meal inspiration across social media, showcasing eggs as an option for families, food lovers and those with active lifestyles.

Bord Bia says eggs are a source of high-quality protein, containing all nine essential amino acids, as well as nutrients including vitamin D, iodine, selenium, vitamin B12 and choline. Rachel Doyle, Bord Bia Marketing Campaign Manager, said the organisation was delighted to see eggs remain a shopping-list staple, while encouraging consumers to choose eggs bearing the Bord Bia Quality Mark.

Cooler temperatures could drive spiders indoors this autumn Falling autumn temperatures could see more spiders entering Irish homes in search of warmth, shelter and food, according to pest control experts Rentokil. September and October are also a particularly active period for male spiders, as they search for mates. Spiders can enter homes through tiny gaps around doors, windows, walls and pipework, while firewood and other items brought indoors from gardens and sheds can also provide a route inside. Colm Moore, Regional Technical Manager for Rentokil Ireland, said homes can become increasingly attractive to spiders as temperatures fall. While spiders can cause concern, Moore said they can also provide a natural form of pest control by feeding on flies and other insects. Ireland is home to several hundred species of arachnids, although fewer than a dozen are commonly found indoors. The Common House Spider can have a leg span of up to 35mm, while the Giant House Spider can reach 75mm.

Rentokil recommends regularly vacuuming less-disturbed areas, removing webs, sealing gaps around doors and windows, clearing outdoor hiding places such as firewood piles, and reducing insects by keeping surfaces clean and food securely stored. Households experiencing recurring infestations are advised to seek professional pest control advice to identify potential entry points and sources.

Addressing route development, Mr Neilan explained that airlines look closely at load factor alongside overall passenger volume. In July, select Kerry routes achieved load factors of up to 99 per cent. The airport currently has six confirmed meetings scheduled with

prospective carriers to discuss further expansion. Kerry Airport recorded its busiest year on record in 2025, handling 440,000 passengers. Mr Neilan highlighted the importance of domestic and European connectivity for business, education, healthcare, and family travel, noting that attracting new services requires a collective effort between local hoteliers, transport operators, and regional businesses. The luncheon also featured an address by Cllr Niall Kelleher, chairperson of Christmas in Killarney, who introduced the launch and updated branding for this year's festival, urging the local community and trade sector to rally behind the event. Juniors impress in Laois Forest Rally Killarney and District Motor Club’s emerging rally stars delivered strong performances at last weekend’s Laois Forest Rally, the final round of the Motorsport Ireland Junior Rally Series Junior 1000 category. James Spillane emerged as the top Kerry performer. Accompanied by stand-in co-driver Dean McElligott, Spillane drove an impressive rally. After opening the event in fourth place on stage one, Spillane posted impressive times over the second and third tests to leapfrog into second overall in the category. He held off late-stage charges to secure a brilliant second-place finish in J1000. Fellow Killarney and District Motor Club driver Frank Wharton was locked in an

intense, second-by-second duel for the podium spots throughout the day. Wharton held second place early on before dropping to fifth following stage three. He fought back on stage four with the third-fastest time but his battle ended in heartbreak on the final stage when his Volkswagen Up was forced into retirement with engine trouble. In Class 2A, Killarney co-driver Niall Myers enjoyed another competitive outing alongside James McShea. Navigating Oisin McShane to tenth overall and second in class. McShane's hopes of a win ended on the final test when an off-road moment cost him ten seconds Following their success in Laois, McShea and Myers remain firmly in contention for the Class 2A championship title as attention turns to this weekend’s Harvest Rally

€34,950 SAFE DRIVERS: Kerry ranks eighth overall in Ireland for driver compliance, with 13 per cent of local motorists holding active penalty points compared to a national average of over 14 per cent.

Kerry drivers rank among Ireland’s best in national penalty point study

Kerry motorists are among the safest and most compliant in the country, according to new research analysing official Road Safety Authority and Central Statistics Office figures. The study, compiled by insurance brokers Quote Devil, ranks Kerry as the eighth best county in Ireland for driver compliance. Out of 119,885 licensed drivers in the county, 15,582 currently hold active penalty points on their licence, representing 13 per cent of local motorists. That figure places Kerry well below the national average of 14.07 per cent, with 158.6 penalty point notices issued per 1,000 drivers in the county compared to 174.5 nationwide. By comparison, Wexford recorded the highest penalty point rate in the country, where over 21 per

cent of drivers hold active points. Despite the strong overall ranking, national breakdown data highlights specific areas of concern for rural counties like Kerry. Offence figures show points issued for driving with worn or damaged tyres are particularly prevalent in western rural regions, where long-distance travel on local road networks increases vehicle wear and tear. Nationally, speeding and mobile phone usage remain the leading causes of penalty points, while over 500,000 drivers across the country currently hold active points on their records.

Listry Meals on Wheels seeks volunteer drivers Listry Community Council is issuing an appeal for volunteer drivers to support the local Meals on Wheels service.

The essential community initiative provides hot meals to residents across the area, helping support vulnerable individuals and older members of the local population. Organisers are looking for dependable drivers who can spare roughly two

hours of their time every three weeks to assist with meal deliveries. The minimal time commitment plays a vital role in ensuring the service continues to operate smoothly for those who rely on it throughout the community. Anyone interested in volunteering or looking for further details can contact Cathriona by calling or texting 087 9381063. Alternatively, enquiries can be sent by email to cathrionadoc73@ hotmail.com.

STORY

9.10.2026 Felicity and Jack sat in the living room with the TV on low in the background, running through the various questions that could come up on the exam. There was so much information.

A weekly series from Killarney Advertiser's Jess Jukes

It was incredible daunting, but Felicity knew that she wanted to be able to drive. It wasn’t an option in her head. She didn’t want to be stuck with getting the bus or train up to Dublin if she needed to visit her parents, or always badgering Auntie Sheila or Jack for a lift everywhere. Eventually, darkness approached and with it, the time to take Jack’s small cousins, Molly and Brian, to the orienteering. Upon arriving they all registered and geared up. Felicity stood back and let them work together, quietly laughing at them. Jack, Molly and Brian were all equipped with bright headtorches and were huddled around a map like a group of penguins. The orienteering itself was great fun. Once Jack explained how to use the map and plastic fobs, the kids ran through the forest, the muck and the undergrowth without a care in the world. Felicity and Jack trailed behind them, envious of their energy. They darted from each orange and white flag to the next, the kids celebrating at each marker they reached. Jack and Felicity dropped them back to Jack’s aunt Shelly afterwards, then set off for home.

ANOTHER ERRAND

They next morning Felicity’s phone pinged with a text from Jack. “Mam is in a state. I’m being sent for more décor. Want to tag along?” Half an hour later Felicity walked in Jack’s front door. “-natural looking branches – no, a mop isn’t going to cut it Trevor! You can’t decorate a mop with cobwebs!” Jack came into the hallway from the kitchen. “As you can tell, Mam’s in a bit of a way.” He grinned at her. “Come on in.” Felicity waited by the door, and took in the room. The room was covered in orange, black, greens and purple. It was like a costume shop threw up all over the room. There were witches’ hats hanging off of light fixtures, and plastic packages of cobwebs strewn across the table. Even the bottle for the washing up liquid had been switched out in favour of a ghost-themed version. Mary turned from where Trevor was sat at the table with Halloween-coloured paper garlands towards the door. “Felicity! Thank goodness, another woman with sense. You go with Jack, make sure he picks out a nice spooky branch that I can dress up with cobwebs for the sitting room window. The whole town is decorated, but I’ve yet to do my own house!” Jack and Felicity nodded along. “Let’s go, while we still can,” Jack murmured and they exited quietly as his mother enlisted his father to grab more decorations from the attic. “Mam is crazy for decorating, but Halloween is definitely her favourite holiday. I think it’s because aunt Shelly is involved

in the Halloween Howl in Kenmare. At Christmas she does the house up as well, but she’s nowhere near as stressed.” Jack and Felicity park at the entrance to the national park nearest to Muckross Abbey, and venture inside. They beeline for the forest, and start searching the yellow and orange leave-covered underbrush for a suitable “spooky” branch. It isn’t long before they find a twisted branch with lots of twig offshoots. “How about this?” Felicity asked, holding it up. “It looks like it could be decorated fairly easily, and your mam could hang it from the top here.” Delighted with their find, Jack suggests a walk around Muckross Abbey. “It’s gorgeous in autumn,” he says, “and there are some great stories to be told about it.”

MUCKROSS ABBEY

They wander through the abbey, Jack recounting stories about how he and his cousins used to play sardines in the dark. “There was one time my cousin Michelle hid in one of the super dark rooms in a corner, and we were all terrified of the dark. None of us wanted to go looking in those super dark rooms so we searched everywhere else about five times before one of my other cousins went looking in the room and didn’t come back out. Well, after that we all knew where she was hiding, and we had to shout into the room to get her to come out. It was great fun.” Felicity could imagine playing a game like that here in the dark – the thought of people all running and stumbling around trying to find someone who was hiding sounded like great craic. As they wandered back to the car Felicity’s phone pinged. It was an email. “Jack,” she said, “I’ve officially been accepted into the apprenticeship programme!” “This means you get to stay in Killarney, right?” he asked. “Yeah, Auntie Sheila said that if I was accepted I could move down here permanently.” She couldn’t wait to tell Auntie Sheila. “That’s amazing news Felicity, well done!” They chattered all the way back to the car. Felicity organised for her parents to drop her belongings off at the same time. “What are your parents like?” Jack asked. “You never mention them.” “Well, mom’s a hotel manager and dad works in the bank. So they weren’t around much when I was a kid. I guess really that’s one of the reasons why they sent me down to Auntie Sheila’s last summer. I almost can’t believe they never did it before then to be honest.” “Probably because your aunt was busy being a detective,” Jack said as they got back to the car. They drove back to Killarney. Felicity was delighted by the news of her acceptance and couldn’t wait to tell her family, and move into this new chapter of her life. Tune in next week to see what happens ...

Maybe Drumcree’s Last Defiant Stand? NICKY BARRY

So this avid Legion fan, who knows I am from Down, Asked me agitatedly, what’s up with those Orange clowns? He was on about the Orange march, down the Garvaghy Road, But wasn’t that all sorted out, twenty eight years ago? It was indeed says I, but then Trump got all excited, And declared in Dublin, that Ireland should be united. Unity is inevitable, someday down the line, And Orangemen know, that it will come in time. They know the game is up, and their days are numbered, But Trump’s declaration, hit them like a bombshell, So they made one last effort, to assert their dominance, Over Garvaghy Fenians, who would hinder their advance. Look says I, Crokes were the first, and the town was theirs, Until in 1929, came the pesky Legionnaires. So these two major Kerry clubs, draw from the same pool, Signing up tomorrow’s stars, from all the local schools. There is a fierce rivalry, between these Killarney tribes, Who both live and let live, with immense local pride. They co-exist in Beauty’s Home, because they can abide, Unlike those frightened Orangemen, who dread the ebbing tide!

County Championship draw throws up four tantalising quarter-finals The cream of Kerry’s crop will go headto-head in Tralee and Killarney this weekend as the Senior Football Championship reaches the quarter-final stage. Holders Dingle were dumped out by surprise package Spa last weekend but plenty of top talent remains. Recent champions East Kerry, Dr Crokes and Austin Stacks art still in contention, as are Club Champions Rathmore. Spa, Kenmare Shamrocks, An Ghaeltacht and North Kerry will be aiming to go at least one more step; reaching the semi-finals would represent a superb run for any of these outsiders (and who knows what could happen from there). One of An Ghaeltacht and North Kerry are guaranteed to make the last four as they face each other in Tralee on Saturday in the first of the four quarter-finals. All-Ireland Intermediate champs An Ghaeltacht looked to be down and out last weekend when they trailed Templenoe by a point in the last minute of extra time, but a last-gasp goal by Cian Mac Gearailt sent them through to the next round. North Kerry, meanwhile, enjoyed a handsome win over Na Gaeil. The second of Saturday’s double-header in Austin Stack Park is a clash of black and ambers as Crokes take on Stacks at 7.15pm. Both sides enjoyed comfortable victories in the last 16: Crokes beat South Kerry by 11 and Stacks beat Milltown-Castlemaine by 19.

On Sunday the focus switches to Killarney with club rivals Rathmore and Kenmare Shamrocks getting the action underway at 1.30pm. Super sub Mark Reen go the all-important score for Rathmore in their hardfought one-point victory over St Kieran’s in the last round, while Kenmare had it easier in their 15-point win over West Kerry. The weekend’s football concludes on Sunday afternoon with the Battle of East Kerry as Spa, one of the primary contributors of players to the East Kerry team prior to their promotion to senior level, go up against East Kerry for a spot in the final four. Few expected the Killarney club to get the better of reigning All-Ireland champs Dingle last weekend but a well-taken goal by Cian Murphy propelled them to a famous 1-17 to 1-11 win. David Clifford kicked a twopoint free (for a breach) to break Mid Kerry hearts and secure a quarter-final berth for East Kerry. They will be expected to march on to the last four, but Spa will be full of confidence following their recent giant-killing exploits. All four games will be live on Clubber for those unable to attend in person.

Suspend Israel – or keep them out of our sight | By Adam Moynihan Ireland fulfilled their second fixture against Israel in Serbia on Sunday night, drawing 1-1 in an empty stadium in Backa Topola. Gavin Bazunu again absented himself in protest at Israel’s genocidal actions in Gaza. None of his teammates ultimately joined him on his boycott. It’s challenging to sum up the events of the last couple of weeks in a concise manner but it’s safe to say the whole sorry Ireland-Israel episode has left a sour taste in the mouth. The FAI had an opportunity to do something good, to take a principled position that would be remembered for generations. It was such a golden chance to communicate the feeling of the Irish people on a global scale, to show solidarity with the Palestinian people, and to stand up to Israel. Instead, they chose to avoid mystery financial and football sanctions, and in turn passively allowed themselves to

become a tool of Israeli propaganda. For a week or so, Irish football presented itself as a handy platform for Israel to air their delusions and demonstrate their cynical, bullyboy tactics to the watching world. Apart from the moral considerations, their actions just cemented the feeling that we would have been so much better off not playing them. They called our manager ignorant and a hypocrite, and eventually pressured him to back down on his use of the word genocide (something he should not have done under any circumstances); their fans allegedly racially abused our black players in Debrecen; they appear to have falsely accused Irish players of racist abuse; their journalists hijacked press conferences and accused an FAI officer of assault when he took back the microphone; one Israeli public figure remarked that Israel should “activate the pagers we scattered in Ireland”, referencing terror attacks carried out by Mossad in Lebanon in 2024; a player allegedly spat at an Irish coach in Serbia;

Uri Geller made a number of anti-Irish comments and share an AI-generated image of Irish players depicted as leprechauns with rats’ tails; and, of course, the usual baseless accusations of anti-semitism were thrown around like confetti. I sampled those accusations myself when I praised Gavin Bazunu on Twitter/X. It’s not for the first time I was bombarded with abuse and whataboutery by Israeli commenters, racists and the far right. That’s simply their M.O. The frenzied reaction to the Stop The Game movement and Bazunu’s stand tells you everything you need to know about the power of a boycott. Bazunu’s actions sent these hateful groups of people into meltdown. Imagine how powerful it would have been if the whole team had followed suit… Some have criticised the Irish players for not boycotting but I have sympathy for them. Could they have been stronger? Yes, most definitely. But I also accept that they were under immense pres-

sure from the FAI to play the games. I believe the FAI presented them with the worst-case scenario – i.e. that Uefa would prevent them from playing at Euro 2028 in Ireland and the UK. The right call should have been made higher up, and a long time ago. Instead it was allowed to drag on and get dirty, which suited certain factions down to the ground. At least it’s all over. Or is it? Uefa have confirmed that they have opened an investigation into the alleged spitting incident, and the alleged racist chanting from the first game in Debrecen. Whether they arrive at guilty verdicts or not, it’s doubtful that Israel will pass up on the opportunity to sling mud and see what sticks. There have been fresh calls from the Irish side to keep the two nations apart in future draws. Israel should be suspended from sport full top. If that doesn’t happen, then keeping them out of our sight would be better for our own peace, that’s for sure.

Try, try ‘til you succeed 56

9.10.2026

Eamonn Fitzgerald was at the premiere of the heartwarming new Irish film ‘Try!’ This week we travel over the county bounds to see how sport turns disability into ability as we enter the brave new world of the can-do Rebels. Not that magnificent Irish women’s 4319 win over Japan in their international game at Virgin Media Park, Cork, or 20-year-old Charlie O'Shea, Academy out-half, who was Man of the Match for Munster in that badly needed URC win, beating the Bulls 26-22. The Cork premiere of the film ‘Try!’ at the Everyman Theatre in Cork City last Friday night stole the show. The storyline by filmmaker Oisín Mistéil follows four Irish players who defy all expectations on their journey to the most inclusive and competitive 2025 World Cup in Pamplona, Spain, you've never seen. This unique sport is 15-a-side, full-contact rugby played by people with and without disabilities, all with the shared dream of lifting the World Cup trophy. The four adult Down syndrome rugby players are Tommy of the Malone Tornadoes; Paul of the DLSP Vikings, as well as Cork duo Richie of Sunday’s Well and Maeve of the Ballincollig Rebel Trailblazers. So, you could have players with no apparent disability playing on the same team as those with physical, intellectual/learning, sensory, neurodivergent, mental, or chronic illnesses, or a former player recovering after a stroke, all disabled in some way.

JOURNEYING WITH MAEVE

I have known Maeve for over two decades, so the focus of this article concentrates on her journey, and I’ve no doubt the same journey is replicated for Tommy, Paul and Richie. Maeve has brightened and clarified our perspective on the value of sport in coping with an unbelievable challenge. She was born in Cork in with Down syndrome. In the grim past, such people were hidden from normal life, kept at home by parents who felt ashamed, especially the mothers who had to conceptualise the máchail the Lord had given her. How were the parents going to deal

with this defect, inconvenience and hidden grievance? Not the bonny, healthy baby of the normal world, but this baby was different and will be different to the norm for the years ahead. That was the perception; thankfully, changing attitudes in Ireland see special people with special needs in a welcome new light. Never has a try scored in Killarney’s RFC pitch at Aghadoe, Thomond Park or the Aviva been more celebrated than the ‘Try!’ premiered in Cork last weekend.

ity becomes the normality as chances of victory seemed lost by the slightest of margins, held up inches from the try line. Oisín hit the bullseye in the Q&A session on stage after the show, chaired by Matt Cooper. Matt’s professional skills honed on RTÉ made for pleasant, incisive but not condescending questioning or interrupting, which destroys the effect of some interviews. The focus is on the person being questioned and certainly not vice versa.

EYE-OPENER

I spoke with two well-known sports people, one from Cork and one from Kerry, and asked them for their initial gut reactions when their baby was born with Down syndrome. I asked Maeve’s parents for their honest emotions when she was born, and at four months old, her life was in the balance, needing lifesaving surgery. “I’ll not tell you a lie; we were shocked when a medical professional said, ’Are

This film is an eye-opener. I loved it all; a tribute to Oisín Mistéil. This was not gentle tag rugby but full-on contact by the real players, the stars of this film. Both men and women got totally absorbed in the rucks, mauls, scrums and lineouts. No holds barred, with some expletives as is normal for players in any code when that ball just does not do what you want it to do. Throw in the oval ball and abnormal-

you sure you want to have this operation done? I mean, she has Down syndrome. She'll have her own particular difficulties in life, and she'll be dead soon enough if she doesn't have the operation, and maybe it's something you should consider.’” That stark cameo was not unusual at that time. Move to Kerry, and on Monday I spoke with a prominent intercounty footballer of the past who said: “When I got to the hospital, the matron asked to see me. We had no idea what Down syndrome meant or how to deal with it. However, we adapted to the challenge, and there were many challenges, but our now-adult son is our joy and largely independent. That’s the secret: supporting him as he makes his own decisions and has a great social life like others of his age. Where would we be without him?” Phil Coulter had a son named Paul who was born with Down syndrome and passed away at the age of four due to a

9.10.2026 heart defect. He penned that beautiful song ‘Scorn Not His Simplicity’ which captures the diverse emotions for the parents: ‘See him stare/Not recognising that kind face/That only yesterday he loved/The loving face/Of a mother who can't understand what she's been guilty of.’ If only? Why me? Why us? Guilty feelings and a bleak future. How will he fit into the world of the future? Who is going to look after him, if we pass away before him?

DUINE LE DIA

Attitudes have changed, or more accurately, they are changing. Have they changed sufficiently to accept this ‘duine le Dia’, that wonderful Irish phrase for people with special needs, including those with Down syndrome or the neurodivergent? It’s heartening to see how rugby became the conduit for all these Down syndrome players to develop a meaningful life. Sure, they will still have challenges in

life, but who hasn’t in the world of ordinary people? What is normal for ordinary people. What is extraordinary about the four stars in this film is their enthusiasm. Maeve’s parents told me that when she is at home, she eats, sleeps, and dreams of rugby, spends hours on YouTube learning how to perfect the skills of rugby, and in the horrendous winter weather, she always insists on being driven to Ballincollig for training and revels in the mud and gutter. Is it any wonder she was appointed captain of the Ballincollig Trailblazers for the World Cup, and that beautiful, hilarious scene when she went clothes shopping with her closest friend Clodagh, their femininity breaks out. What do you think of me wearing this sombrero in Pamplona? She even tells her boyfriend that her romance was on hold during preparations for the World Cup. Her friendships with her teammates show how sport can create bonds that no other environment can match. When Maeve hangs out with her

teammates, which she loves to do, all divisions and designations of 'ability' and 'disability' are rendered non-existent. Just don't get in her way on the rugby pitch; she brings a whole new meaning to determination. Ballincollig Trailblazers did not win the World Cup in Pamplona, but they win the hearts of people every day as we observe in their summer workplaces, such as that at Deenagh Cottage coffee shop or on the billboards proclaiming Killarney: Autism Friendly Town.

CHANGING ATTITUDES

‘Try!’, this marvellous film, challenges its viewers to rethink. Look at all those billboards on the roadsides of Kerry advertising school enrolment dates and positively advertising that the school is now providing for students with special needs such as autism, dyspraxia, dyslexia etc. It wasn’t that long ago that some schools and some in society shied away from those challenges. This article is written before Budget Day. Naturally, we all hope for giveaways that put more money into our pockets. However, I wonder how this Budget will divert some of the big nest egg controlled by Jack Chambers to be released for the vulnerable people in Ireland via Norma Foley, the former Tralee teacher, who is currently Minister for Children, Disability and Equality. The Real Taoiseach was in a splendid, relaxed mood in his address before the screening of ‘Try!’. Not the tense, formal rhetoric we see on our screens where he has to be politically correct dealing with international affairs, but a reincarnated Jack Lynch, the former Taoiseach. Micheál Martin was among his own people, with plenty of jovial comments to Nemo and Corkonian friends. Among his own people in the Cork Republic, he said that the government is fully supportive of helping those with special needs and making funds available for this enlightened approach. Fair dues to you, Micheál Mór, but I hope decent allocations for Norma’s portfolio were made for those with disabilities. What matters the shape of the ball or the code in this game of life? ‘Try!’ gladdened our hearts. Much done; more to do.

KILLARNEY SCREENING

‘Try!’ is being screened in Cork, Dublin, and Wexford but not in Killarney (to date). I asked why not Killarney? Given the film’s theme and strong local interest in inclusive sport, a Kerry showing would work wonders for a discerning audience. Over to you readers, I’m sure Cinema Killarney and Omniplex would screen ‘Try!’, if requested by many people. Get going on the mobile. A try on the pitch begins with a try in the heart. Try by name; try by nature. Take us away, Coulter, Luke Kelly or Sinéad O’Connor with your interpretations of ‘Scorn not His Simplicity’. ‘He won't ask/For your pity or your sympathy, but surely you should care/Oh no, oh no.’

Defeat for St Paul’s men but women’s team beat Killester NATIONAL LEAGUE DIVISION 1 ___________________________________________________________________________________

Utility Trust St Paul’s Lakers 82 | Templeogue 92 PRES GYM

| By Enda Walshe Often described as the moving quarter, the third period in this opening round of the Dominos Men's Division 1 League would prove to be the Lakers’ undoing as they were outgunned by double scores by a physically stronger Templeogue side 82-92. The opening half had been an even encounter with only seven between the sides at half time (49-42) but the Metropolitans opened up a game-defining lead with Jack Wright playing the central role. Ten of his seventeen points came in this quarter, including two threes with Elijah Wilson repeating the dose and the 29-14 quarter scoreline really opened the gates for a Templeogue win. But credit to Luke O’Hea’s side, they showed tremendous spirit in the final quarter, pushing hard and they soon narrowed that 78-56 lead down to an 88-80 deficit. But both the clock and Templeogue’s ability to play out the game saw

them carry the spoils on a 92-82 scoreline. There would be plenty for Coach O’Hea to cling onto with Valters Mazzburrs netting 20 points and point guard Jack Watkins hitting 26 points, collecting 10 rebounds and dishing out 7 assists. Jack O’Sullivan could be very happy with his night's work while Rui Saraiva demonstrated great grit. Evan Boyle and Cillian O'Leary showed some promise while Mark Sheehan brought his usual industry. There will be plenty to work on ahead of the visit of the Titans on Saturday night (7.30pm). The Titans went all the way to the League final last season, their first campaign under head coach Erin Bracken. They lost out narrowly last weekend when a strong fourth quarter push from Portlaoise Panthers pipped them at the post. They are backboned by the Gbinigie brothers Declan and Nathan, local talents Joseph Coughlan and Victor Tashev as well as American point guard Zachary Sawyer.

FIRST GAME: The new-look St Paul's team who were defeated by Portlaoise.

SUPER LEAGUE

Elsewhere there was victory for St Paul’s in the opening fixture of the Women’s Super League as the Killarney girls overcame the challenge of Killester in Dublin (70-74). As starts go it couldn't get more difficult than this. Away to a Killester side who were National Cup winners in 2026 and were only denied a three-in-a-row in the league by Trinity Meteors. To head to the Oblate Hall in Inchicore minus the GAA-tied Lorraine Scanlon and Síofra O’Shea only added to the task. But what transpired was a magnificent performance by James Fleming's side, who fought tooth and nail for every possession and used the ball brilliantly when in control. This was typified by local duo Leah McMahon and Rheanne Kelly, who both plundered ten points but also defended with a resilience that had to be admired. They were not alone as Angelina Robles put in forty minutes of skill and industry and Spaniard Paula Reus grabbed points and rebounds of equal importance. The returning Maisie Burnham was also highly influential but she ran into foul trouble which limited her input, especially in the

PERFORMANCE: St Paul's joint captain Rheanne Kelly.

last quarter. The game would also see Louise Scannell, Mairéad McKenna and Emma Buckley make their competitive debuts and they all put their shoulders to the wheel when needed most. With three home games in a row and the expected return of Scanlon and O’Shea, this win is magnified by its significance. The reigning Super League champions Trinity Meteors visit the Presentation Gym this Saturday, October 10 at 4pm. They come to Killarney on the back of a hard-earned win over Glanmire on the opening weekend.

Mastergeeha U12 GIRL’S NATIONAL CUP ROUND 1: Blackhill FC 3 V Mastergeeha FC 2 pens. Goal Scorer: Ellie Lynch O'Doherty. Unfortunately, our National Cup came to an end away to Blackhill FC in agonising fashion as we lost 3-2 on penalties. Both sides could not be separated after an enthralling contest with Mastergeeha twice coming from behind through Ellie Lynch O'Doherty to set up an exciting extra time. No breakthrough could be found so we headed to dreaded penalties. The penalties went all the way to sudden death with Blackhill securing the win 3-2. We are immensely proud of the girls and the performance they put in over the 80+ minutes. The whole squad gave it their all - special mention to Kate Mc Carthy who was outstanding in goals and saved 4 penalties. U14 GIRL’S NATIONAL CUP ROUND 1: Mastergeeha Fc v Charleville AFC w/o. U16 BOYS: Killarney Legion 2-17 Dr Crokes 1-11. Our U16 Boys travelled to Dr Crokes Park for the delayed East Kerry League Final against our great local rivals Dr Crokes. The team worked very hard through the first half to establish a lead of 1-8 to 0-4 at half time. The teams traded scores throughout the second half and the boys did enough through the half to keep their noses ahead at the end. And so ends a good East Kerry League campaign for the team ,with good wins against Fossa and Kilgarvan, a draw against Kilcummin and a narrow loss to Scartaglin. Thanks to Dr

Crokes for a great sporting game and to Padraig O'Sullivan for excellent officiating. Captain Sean Lyne accepted the trophy on behalf of the team, a great achievement by Sean after working so hard to get back after a year out injured. LOTTO: Lotto Numbers: 1,7,11,18. Bonus 1. Dr Crokes GAA SENIOR COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP: Dr. Crokes 1:20 South Kerry 0:12. After a closely fought first half, we showed quality and composure after the break to pull away and secure an important championship win. South Kerry opened the scoring inside the first minute, but we soon settled into the game with Micheál Burns, Brian Looney, Tony Brosnan and Cian McMahon all contributing to the scoreboard. We led by four points after ten minutes, but South Kerry responded strongly and levelled the game at 0-6 apiece midway through the half. The sides continued to trade scores, with David Shaw adding a valuable two-pointer before half-time. We went into the interval with a narrow 0-11 to 0-10 advantage. We took control however in the second half. A Cian McMahon two-pointer extended the lead early in the half before we began to take control around the middle of the field. Our defence worked hard to limit South Kerry’s opportunities. Tony Brosnan seemed to cause problems for the South Kerry defence, while Alex Hennigan made an immediate impact from the bench with two well-taken scores. Tony Brosnan put the finishing touch on an excellent team display with a late goal. HEALTHY CLUB organised and sponsored a memorable event for our senior club members on Monday last. 24 members went on a 2-hour tour of the Lakes of Killarney in two boats and finished with refreshments in Ross Castle Café. Thanks to Tim and Mike for providing AN Cathal, the new boat specially adapted with facilities for passengers with mobility challenges. Fossa GAA LOTTO: The numbers drawn on 04/10/2026 for a jackpot of €11,400 were 1, 2, 21, 23. There was no jackpot winner. The €40 consolation prize winners were; Denise Myers, Kerry Crean, Eileen Mullen Scarteen Killarney, Tina Myers, Sinead O’Shea Castlemaine. Tickets are available from our sellers and can also be bought online. SENIOR LADIES: While the result didn't go our way in yesterday's Bon Secours-sponsored Premier Junior County Championship Final against Ballymacelligott, our Senior Ladies can be immensely proud of the performance they produced. Facing highly rated opposition, they showed tremendous character, determination and resilience throughout. From the first whistle to the last, they battled for every ball, supported one another and never stopped believing. The game was always within reach. We were early leaders and never more than a couple of scores behind and, even when reduced to 14 players with the game in the balance, the girls dug deep, showed real courage and continued to fight for every ball. They gave themselves every chance right to the final whistle and never allowed the contest to get away from them. There were some excellent passages of play, great teamwork and outstanding individual efforts, but above all, it was the spirit of the group that stood out. Their determination, resilience and refusal to give up epitomised everything that is good about the team. Defeat is never easy, but this team accepted the result with positivity and maturity, recognising how far they have come and all they have achieved together this season. A huge thank you to the players, supporters and everyone who helped make this journey possible. Heads held high. Plenty learned, many memories made, and no doubt there are brighter days ahead for this talented group. We are proud of every one of you. Deerpark Pitch & Putt CLUB MATCHPLAY: All done now for our 2026 Club Matchplay (sponsored by Murphy's Bar). Our thanks to all those who took part over the last two months as we had two rather different deciders last Saturday. Our Championship decider was all about the brilliance of Nathan Cronin's pitching as he defeated Denis Duggan 8&7 in our Championship decider which can be seen in the live stream available on the Club’s Facebook Page. Nathan makes up for last year's runners-up finish rather like his dad did between the 2016 and 2017 deciders a decade ago as a father and son double is rather unique for this competition. The Plate Final was where the real drama was on the day however as James Foley and Declan Kelly battled to and fro until the last hole with James sinking a long range birdie putt to win 1up on last. James has won the Championship and Plate now in both events as one thing that is also confirmed with our Club Matchplay conclusion is that Denis Duggan is our 2026 Club Player of the Year award winner with his run to the Championship decider. He can't be caught now by anyone ahead of the final event for POTY, the Christmas Hamper on Sunday October 18th. Congratulations to Denis on this consolation from Saturday's events. We look forward to presenting Nathan, James and Denis along with the other prizewin-

ners from this event at our end of year gathering in Murphy's itself in December. Date TBC. NATIONAL SECONDARY SCHOOLS EVENT: While St Brendans College's fouryear reign as National Secondary Schools champions came to an end last Thursday in Lakeside with a fourth place finish overall, the two Fionn's and Lucas were both presented with the Willie Parker Memorial Cup for the Munster Secondary Schools win in St Stephens the previous week. Fionn McMonagle was presented with the Best Individual score for the Munster also as the second St Brendans team (Team 3) finished 12th overall on the day. Our thanks to St Brendans once again for facilitating our members taking part in this event again as we once more thank Killarney CC and ISK for entering teams as well this year. SUNDAY DRAWS: Two Ball BetterballFirst Nett: Ger Casey & Gerard O'Brien 37½, Gross: Denis Duggan & James Foley 48 (B9) and Second Nett: Denis Duggan & Dan Kiely 38. NATIONAL SCOTCH FOURSOMES: Our Best Wishes to club members who are taking part in both the Mixed and NonMixed events in Tralee this weekend as we also wish Tralee well with their hosting of the event. CHRISTMAS HAMPER: This event will take place on the weekend of October 18th. Further information to follow next week.

Killarney Cougars BC COUGARS TIP OFF: The Cougars has kicked off the new season with plenty of momentum, launching a new club app while also celebrating a number of outstanding achievements within the club. The official season launch took place at the Presentation Gym on Thursday last, October 1st, where the club unveiled its new Killarney Cougars BC App, now available through the Google Play Store and Apple App Store. The new app will give the club’s growing membership easy access to fixtures, training schedules, club news and other important information. With Cougars teams currently using four venues — Presentation Gym, St Brendan’s Seminary Gym, Kilcummin and St Mary’s Parish Hall — the app is a valuable resource for coaches and club officials in managing the increasingly busy club calendar. O'SULLIVAN: There was plenty to celebrate at the launch, with U16 player Dara O’Sullivan recognised for his latest selection to the Ireland U16 team. Dara’s latest international honour continues his impressive progression, having previously represented Ireland at U14 level. The club also paid tribute to three people who have made a significant contribution to Cougars basketball over many years. Team manager Eileen Sugrue was recognised for more than a decade of service to the club, particularly with the boys’ teams. The Boys U18 team were presented with there winners U18 medals County League medals for the 25/26 season. Coach Tony O’Sullivan has enjoyed considerable success with Cougars teams, guiding them to consecutive All-Ireland Club Championships and consecutive All-Ireland League campaigns, as well as two Kerry U18 Cup & League titles in recent seasons. Coach and Development Officer Kelly Ahern has also given more than 10 years to the club. Kelly has represented Ireland at three FIBA European Championships and has served as Basketball Ireland Academy Coach for the South West region. VIKINGS TAKE U16 HONOURS: The Cougars hosted an Invitational U16 Division 1 Boys Tournament at the Presentation Gym, with the action getting underway at 9am and continuing throughout the day. Waterford Vikings emerged as tournament winners after a thrilling overtime victory over Ballincollig in the final. The Cork side looked to be heading for victory,

but the unbeaten Vikings held their nerve to come through in what was arguably the game of the day. The Cougars themselves suffered a tough opening-game defeat to Ballincollig. Having built a 10-point lead, the home side saw their advantage disappear before Ballincollig snatched victory on the buzzer. It was a tough loss for the Cougars and effectively ended their hopes of reaching the final, but the tournament provided valuable game time ahead of their All-Ireland campaign.

Killarney RFC SENIOR MEN MAKE IT TWO FROM TWO: Killarney RFC Senior Men continued their strong start to Munster Junior League Division 2 with a 29-15 away victory over Carrick-on-Suir RFC on Sunday. With plenty of new caps involved, it was a very positive start for the combined Killarney, Iveragh, Castleisland and Killorglin side. The girls begin their league campaign against Clonakilty at Ballymalis next weekend, with kick-off at 1pm.
