Holy Cross Day Care Centre launches appeal to fund facility expansion The board of directors at Holy Cross Day Care Centre on Rock Road has launched a major fundraising campaign aimed at expanding services and upgrading facilities for older people across Killarney and surrounding areas. Operating Monday to Friday from 10.00am to 4.00pm for nearly 25 years, the centre provides companionship, hot meals, structured activities, and professional support to help clients remain living independently in their own homes. With local demand continuing to rise, management is appealing to businesses, community partners, and residents to help fund critical capital upgrades. Planned improvements include a new wheelchair-accessible minibus, upgraded bathroom facilities, a dedicated storage unit, and specialised medical ceiling hoists. Speaking on behalf of the board of management, Sheila Dickson said that the centre serves as a lifeline for both attendees and their families. "Our centre has been providing a warm, welcoming, and safe environment for nearly 25 years," Dickson said. "It is where our clients can enjoy companionship, nutritious meals, meaningful activities, and the care and support from qualified staff that helps them remain active, independent, and connected. For many of our clients, the centre is much more than a place to spend the day, it is a lifeline that reduces loneliness, improves quality of life, and supports the client to remain in their own homes." Management highlighted that corporate donations of €250 or more to the regis-
tered charity qualify for tax deductions, with all contributions publicly acknowledged.
NEW MINIBUS TO EXPAND RURAL REACH
A central priority of the expansion project is the acquisition of an additional 16-seater wheelchair-accessible Mercedes Sprinter minibus. Having already secured €93,000 toward the vehicle, the centre is seeking to clear a remaining €24,000 shortfall to complete the purchase. The vehicle is central to management's plans to widen access for clients living inside and outside the town centre. Appropriate transport remains a barrier preventing older residents in Killarney and the surrounding areas from accessing daily care, hot meals, and social contact. Replacing and expanding the transport fleet will enable Holy Cross to establish new collection routes across local rural communities, bringing isolated residents directly to the Rock Road facility. CAPITAL UPGRADE FUNDING TARGETS
16-Seater Minibus: €24,000 shortfall (Total cost partially funded via €93,000 raised) Bathroom Upgrades: €30,000 Storage Unit: €8,600 Ceiling Hoist: €2,111.48 (plus VAT)
FUNDRAISING APPEAL: Sheila Dickson and Cathy Cronin pictured this week launching the new fundraising drive for Holy Cross Day Care Centre on Rock Road.
State to construct new childcare facility following shortage Killarney has been selected as one of seven locations across the country for a new State-led early learning and childcare project. The move follows official findings from the Department of Children, Disability and Equality that identified a severe shortage of places in the area. The town was highlighted in national reports as experiencing a very large undersupply of capacity, leaving working parents facing long waiting lists and few options for full-time crèche places. Fianna Fáil TD for Kerry Michael Cahill welcomed the announcement, noting
that finding a suitable childcare place remains one of the largest obstacles for local parents trying to return to the workforce. Cahill said that the Department had identified the critical shortage in Killarney and that this targeted investment aims to directly address the shortfall. He added that he will remain in contact with the Department as the project progresses to ensure momentum is maintained and that the additional capacity opens as quickly as possible. Unlike historic schemes that relied strictly on private enterprise or local community groups to buy land and secure planning
permission, the new State-led initiative involves direct government intervention. The State will acquire properties directly, fund necessary fit-out works, and enforce legal protections to retain the asset's value. To speed up delivery, the Department is prioritising the purchase and conversion of existing structures over constructing new buildings on greenfield sites. Once property negotiations, valuations, and site modifications are finished, the Department will appoint a non-profit operator to run the Killarney branch. The service is expected to open next year. Minister Foley called the nationwide roll-
out a groundbreaking move by the Government to expand affordable care. Foley stated that the Department is directly leading the delivery of new facilities for the first time, using a €135 million allocation under the National Development Plan to build capacity up to 2030. The Killarney site is part of an initial phase of nine locations across Ireland, alongside developments in Roscommon, Donegal, Wexford, and Dublin. The State initiative runs alongside the Building Blocks Extension Scheme, which supports existing providers with expansion works to help meet national demand.

Green light given for longawaited CCTV scheme Kerry County Council has confirmed that a Data Protection Impact Assessment is complete and approval has been granted by the Garda Commissioner for a new Community CCTV scheme in Killarney town centre.
OPINION
Killarney’s love affair with derelict buildings continues Our news report on Page Six confirming Killarney’s selection as one of seven towns nationwide for a new State-backed childcare centre offers our community a clear opportunity to do the right thing. | By Sean Moriarty Reports indicate that unused local property will be purchased and converted for this project, with target completion set for 2027 in time for the new academic year. Step forward potential locations: Áras Phádraig, St Columbanus, the old District Hospital site, the Pretty Polly property, or the Trade Union Hall on Park Road. All have stood vacant for years awaiting viable community purpose. We can already predict the path ahead. Months will be wasted in endless deliberation searching for a suitable venue, allowing momentum to stall. Now is the moment to act decisively. What is required is immediate, collective
action between property owners, council management, local municipal district councillors, school boards of management, and Minister Norma Foley. They must sit down together, identify an unused, vacant building, and advance this project without delay. Current experience paints a sobering picture. The delays surrounding the opening of the new Killarney Community Nursing Unit serve as a prime example of red tape holding back public progress. Without direct intervention, we will spend years discussing this early learning initiative while bureaucratic inertia prevents a single brick from being moved. The time to deliver this vital facility for local families is now.
Public sector work-to-rule strikes Parents and residents are facing widespread schedule changes following the start of nationwide public sector industrial action on Wednesday. More than 100,000 civil and public servants across the country have entered a work-to-rule dispute over new public sector pay terms. The action involves nurses, special needs assistants, local council staff, and civil servants. The local impact is cantered on post-primary education. Scheduled secondary school open evenings across Killarney have been postponed or called off because teachers and administrative staff are adhering strictly to contractual
hours. Out-of-hours school activities, staff meetings, and non-essential training sessions are also affected. Union directives instruct members to work only their defined hours, refusing overtime or unscheduled cover for absent colleagues. Public counters at Kerry County Council offices and local Social Protection branches in town remain open, though routine queries may experience minor delays. Hospital services continue to operate under essential cover agreements. Unions say the work-to-rule will remain in place until the Department of Public Expenditure reopens formal pay negotiations.
Tender documentation is now prepared, with the project set to go out to tender shortly. Councillor Tommy Cahill welcomed the update, noting that the town and local business groups have campaigned for the infrastructure for more than two decades. "Killarney and Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce have been waiting for this scheme for more than 20 years," Cllr Cahill said. "It is therefore most welcome to see that we are now at a stage where the Data Protection Impact Assessment has been completed, Garda Commissioner approval has been secured, and the tender documentation is prepared." He urged local authorities and state bodies to avoid any further hold-ups following high-profile public order issues over the summer months. "Incidents in the town this summer have further outlined the need for this CCTV
system," he said. "Killarney is one of the busiest towns in the country, particularly during the tourism season, and having an effective Community CCTV system in place is an important piece of infrastructure for the town." Fianna Fáil TD Michael Cahill is taking the issue to the Dáil, submitting a Parliamentary Question to the Minister for Justice regarding the impact of data protection rules on public safety cameras. "There is an important balance to be struck between data protection and public safety, but data protection should not become a barrier to the appropriate installation or operation of CCTV," Deputy Cahill said. "In the case of Killarney, the town has been waiting for a Community CCTV scheme for more than two decades, and it is very welcome that the project has finally reached the stage where tender documentation has been prepared." Kerry County Council currently acts as Data Controller for four Community CCTV schemes across the county, covering three locations in Tralee and one in Killorglin. The local authority confirmed it will continue working with An Garda Síochána and Local Community Safety Partnerships regarding future rollouts.

Pat Tangney retires from CRL Oil after 47 years Well-known and widely respected sales representative Pat Tangney has officially retired from CRL Oil following 47 years of service with the Killarney company.
Killarney Racecourse named new Team Hope checking centre
Pat joined the Lissivigeen-based home heating oil business when it was founded in 1979, having initially worked a summer job with sister company C&R Frozen Foods in Ballycasheen. He began his career as a delivery truck driver before working across nearly every area of the business, eventually serving as the company’s primary travelling sales representative. He recalls that the current Lissivigeen site was a green field when operations began in 1979, with the original office operating
out of a caravan. Over his nearly five decades in the oil trade, he experienced the complete transition from handwritten paper invoices to digital systems, as well as the shift away from an era before mobile phones when drivers relied on local post offices for directions to rural homesteads. CRL Oil holds a long-standing historical connection with the Killarney Advertiser. Pat recalls visiting the publication's original founder Danny Casey in a portacabin on Woodlawn to book an advertisement on page three, a position the company maintains to this day. A feature on Pat Tangney’s career will appear in an upcoming edition as part of the popular Marie Meets column.
Killarney Racecourse will serve as the new local checking centre for the annual Team Hope Christmas Shoebox Appeal, as organisers call on the community to drop off donations ahead of the November 10 deadline. The national campaign collects giftfilled shoeboxes for vulnerable children across Africa and Eastern Europe, where the donation is often the only present a child receives at Christmas. Local residents can participate by wrapping an empty shoebox in Christmas paper and filling it with items across four categories: hygiene products, school supplies, small items of clothing, and special gifts or toys. Ready-to-fill boxes are also available through campaign partner Mr Price. Volunteers are also seeking donations of loose filler items to help complete boxes that arrive underfilled, as well as monetary contributions. Killarney branch coordinator Sheila Rice highlighted that the drop-off window is now open, with local schools and collec-
tion points active across the region. "People who wish to help can fill a box, make a financial donation, or provide individual filler items like clothes, toys, and school supplies that fit into a shoebox," Rice said. "Boxes can be handed in at drop-off centres across town or brought directly to our checking centre at Killarney Racecourse up to November 10." The local branch is actively seeking volunteers to assist at the Racecourse processing site, as well as a new team leader to support the coordination of the Killarney campaign. Further information, local drop-off points, or details on volunteering are available at teamhope.ie or by contacting Sheila Rice directly on 087-7932482.

Further details released for 27th KIFF Organisers of the Kerry International Film Festival (KIFF) have revealed further details of the full schedule for this year’s event, which runs across Killarney from October 15 to 18. The newly expanded line-up includes 19 feature films, 14 dedicated short film strands, and industry panels taking place alongside the headline screenings. Among the international selection, KIFF will host the Irish premiere of Summer School 2001, a coming-of-age drama exploring the experiences of a first-generation Vietnamese family in the Czech Republic, as well as the investigative documentary The Limits of Europe. The film follows Czech journalist Saša Uhlová undercover to expose the exploitation of Eastern European workers, including inside an Irish hotel. The international schedule also features the Sundance title Ha-Chan, Shake Your Booty!, Welsh coming-ofage film Out There starring Michael Sheen, and Ukrainian drama Slovo House: Unfinished Novel. New Irish feature additions include the Camino de Santiago drama Walking Holiday, featuring a director Q&A, and home-invasion thriller Our House, which won the Bingham Ray New Talent Award at the Galway Film Fleadh. The documentary strand includes Ross McLean’s Magilligan, a portrait of pris-
on rehabilitation in Northern Ireland, alongside Gar O’Rourke’s The Siege of Paradise, an exploration of over-tourism in Italy’s Cinque Terre. Special events feature a collaboration with Samhain Chiarraí, including a rare screening of Robert Wynne-Simmons’ 1982 Irish folk horror The Outcasts, and storytelling with seanchaí Ray O’Sullivan at Courtney’s Bar. An open-caption screening of Frank Berry’s Galway Film Fleadh winner The Lost Children of Tuam will also take place. The festival will host 'KIFF Reel Talk', a series of industry panels and masterclasses focusing on local opportunities, funding, and crew skills. On Friday, October 16, former Screen Ireland Deputy CEO Teresa McGrane will receive the Maureen O'Hara Award at Randles Hotel. Youth programming includes 'Fresh Starts', a screen careers event for secondary students, and school screenings where primary pupils will vote for the KIFF Kids Choice Award. The festival concludes on Sunday, October 18, with the annual KIFF Awards ceremony at the Great Southern Killarney at 1.00pm.

Dapper councillor judges Best Dressed Man at Listowel Races Killarney Municipal District councillor Niall ‘Botty’ O’Callaghan took to the parade ring as guest judge for the Ryle Menswear Best Dressed Man competition at the Listowel Harvest Racing Festival. The Independent councillor joined shop owner Michael Moran on Thursday, September 24, to assess hundreds of entries. Contenders travelled to the island fixture from across Ireland, the UK, and North America, including finalists from Texas. Kevin Ross from Ballyduff took the top award, winning a custom-made suit valued at €1,500. Jason Carmody placed as runner-up, securing a full Benetti suit package, while all finalists received gift bags from Ryle Menswear. The gentlemen's event formed a key highlight of the seven-day festival, which also featured the McElligotts Kia Best Dressed Lady competition on Friday and the 15th annual Sustainable Style Saturday organised by Listowel Tidy Towns.

In otter news: Gardaí apprehend rogue suspect In one of the more unusual police operations in Killarney this week, two local gardaí came to the rescue of a lost otter found wandering into a town centre deli. The semi-aquatic suspect was first spotted roaming through a nearby housing estate before making a beeline for the food counter, presumably on the hunt for an early morning chicken fillet roll. Garda Lehane and Garda Curtin responded swiftly to reports of the unregistered customer, managing to apprehend the rogue mammal before any hot food counter displays were damaged. Following a brief period in custody, officers transported the uncooperative diner back to the safety of Killarney's lakes, where he was released without charge. A spokesperson confirmed that Garda
Lehane and Garda Curtin were otterly delighted to see the little creature return safely to his natural habitat. Local officers reminded residents to leave wildlife policing to the professionals and to report any further suspicious whiskered activity in local eateries.

Gaelscoil raises €1,000 in Power Hour for Jack and Jill
Pupils and staff at Gaelscoil Faithleann danced their way to raising €1,000 for the Jack and Jill Foundation during a special onehour fundraiser on Friday, September 25. The school hosted the 60-minute disco in its Halla and Astro pitch as part of a national initiative run in partnership with Today FM. Every €20 raised through the event funds one hour of professional in-home nursing care for families supported by the charity. The €1,000 total secures 50 hours of respite care for parents of children with severe neurodevelopmental
conditions. Príomhoide Lisa Ní Iarlaithe praised the effort, stating that one hour of school activity will now translate into essential hours of care for families in need. The Jack and Jill Foundation currently provides in-home nursing care and respite support to 530 families across Ireland, allowing parents dedicated time for daily tasks, appointments, and rest.

Lochanna Beo issues appeal over light pollution impact Local environmental group Lochanna Beo has called on residents across Killarney and the UNESCO Kerry Biosphere Reserve to reduce excessive outdoor lighting to protect local wildlife habitats. PODIUM FOR DALY AT NATIONAL TIME TRIAL CHAMPIONSHIPS: Killarney rider Tom Daly secured a bronze medal at the 2026 Irish Time Trial Championships in Wexford, putting in a standout performance on the national stage. Hosted by Wexford Wheelers, the national showcase saw riders tackle a demanding 22-kilometre course starting and finishing in Enniscorthy. Daly produced a blistering pace across the technical test to lock in third place against a stacked field of the country's top against-the-clock specialists, marking another significant achievement for Killarney cycling.

To limit damage, the group recommends using subdued, downward-pointing lighting rather than fittings that direct light outwards or upwards. The appeal highlights that Killarney borders the Northern Hemisphere's only gold-tier Dark Sky Reserve, making light management critical for the area. Ciara Forde earns 26th black belt for Judo Club
Ciara Forde became the 26th member of Killarney Judo Club to achieve black belt status following a successful performance on Sunday, September 27. Forde spent the past year travelling to events across Ireland and the UK to secure the competitive points required for the grade. Needing three victories on the day, she completed the line-up by defeating an opponent who had beaten her in a previous bout. The achievement marks a family milestone, with Forde joining her father Aidan and older sister Kate as black belt holders at the Killarney club. "It’s a great reflection of her consistency and hard work this year," coach Tim Kelly said. "Ciara has also been a mentor to many of the young girls through coaching, and hopefully she will inspire more to achieve their black belts in the years to come." Club members Patrik Polubnak and
James Maher, both aged 16, also advanced their black belt gradings on the day. Each fighter reached 30 points, with Polubnak securing three submission victories and Maher earning two wins. Conor Sowerby and Shaun Hester both attained their blue belts. Sowerby, who began his judo training in Killarney, now competes with UCD, while Hester recently joined the local club's juvenile coaching team. The club is now preparing for upcoming fixtures, with senior members traveling to the Leinster Open in Dublin and junior members competing at the Munster Mini Mon in Limerick. Further details are available by contacting Tim Kelly on 086-2601591 or visiting killarneyjudo.com.

Alongside her hair donation, Jessica is collecting financial contributions for LauraLynn through the Locks of Love campaign. "I want to help somebody that doesn't have something that I have, hair," Jessica said. Her family expressed their pride in her decision to support both organisations. Management at the facility expects the sports hall to reopen in November. The St Paul’s men's team open their home schedule at the Presentation Gym on Saturday, October 3, against Templeogue at 7.30pm, followed by home ties against Titans on October 10 and Moy Tolka Rovers on October 24. Meanwhile, the Utility Trust St Paul’s women’s team start their home Super League campaign in the Presentation

PAST CAPTAINS TROPHY: 2007 Men’s Captain Patrick Clifford accepts the Past Captains’ Competition trophy from current Killarney Golf and Fishing Club Men’s Captain Tomás Kelliher following his win on Mahony’s Point.
Killarney apprentice John Stack has reached the final six in the national welding competition at WorldSkills Ireland 2026. A fourth-year metal fabricator apprentice at Liebherr Container Cranes Ltd in Killarney, Stack represented the local firm at the national finals held at the RDS in Dublin. Across three days of intense competition, entrants completed a complex welding project designed to test technical proficiency, precision, and craftsmanship. WorldSkills Ireland gathers top apprentices across various industries to benchmark vocational training standards and showcase emerging technical talent. Stack secured his place in the final six after competing against leading fabricators and welders from across the country. Dominique Maurer, Managing Director of Production at Liebherr Container Cranes Ltd, praised Stack's performance on the
national stage. "We are proud to see John reach the final stages of the WorldSkills Ireland Welding Competition," Maurer said. "This achievement is a testament to his hard work, determination, and welding skills. John has been an excellent ambassador for Liebherr throughout the competition, and we are extremely proud of the way he represented the company on the national stage." Liebherr Container Cranes has operated in Killarney since 1958, developing local engineering talent through its structured apprenticeship programme. Further details regarding upcoming apprenticeship opportunities at the Killarney facility are available by contacting lcc. apprenticerecruit@liebherr.com.
success at Munster summit Spa GAA was invited to address delegates at the Sustainable Sports Summit 2026, held at Páirc Uí Chaoimh in Cork on Saturday, September 19. The Killarney club was selected as one of three GAA clubs from across Munster to share its energy efficiency and grant-funded facility upgrades with an audience of 150 sporting and community representatives. Organised by SE Systems Cork, the forum focused on practical steps local clubs can take to reduce ongoing utility bills and secure state grant funding for environmental projects. Club member James Cahill represented Spa GAA on a featured panel
alongside delegates from Clonakilty GAA and Na Piarsaigh GAA in Cork. Cahill outlined how the Killarney club navigated grant applications and implemented energy-saving measures across its grounds and clubhouse. The event, hosted by RTÉ sports commentator Marty Morrissey, allowed club representatives to engage directly with Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI) personnel, community finance groups, and technical consultants. Participation in the Cork summit provided Spa GAA with a platform to highlight its recent environmental investments while offering a model for other Munster clubs seeking to lower operating costs.

Local historian Thomas O’Sullivan is encouraging residents and visitors across Killarney to step outdoors and experience the annual red deer rut over the coming weeks, highlighting how the native species has shaped local folklore and placenames for thousands of years. The native red deer herd in Killarney is the last surviving indigenous herd in Ireland, with a continuous presence dating back over 11,000 years to the end of the last Ice Age. O'Sullivan highlights that as the mating season begins, local vantage points such as Cnoc Rír, Bunrower, and Ross Island offer a front-row seat to one of Ireland's oldest natural spectacles. "Nature takes its long and winding course via the mating game, with the annual deer rut stretching back to the Holocene Age from the retreating Templenoe Ice Cap that sculpted the Killarney Mountains in their grandeur as we see today, onto the slopes and soft peaks of Tomies, Shehy, and Mangarton," O’Sullivan said. "The time now for the hordes of artisans of the light, shutter and aperture with arrays of telephoto and macro lenses to shoot and capture, hunting the

combative stags. Winner takes all in the ways of nature’s art," he added. Tracing the cultural significance of the herd, O’Sullivan outlined how the animals evolved from sacred symbols in early Irish tradition to prominent figures in early Christian history and local geography. "The Red Deer, unique to Killarney, were
revered by the Druids, symbolising transformation, rebirth, and guides to the underworld as Cernunnos," O'Sullivan explained. "Then this belief of the old Celtic mode of being made way toward Christianity, where the deer and stag figured in the iconographies of the monks in their hermitages, wild beasts of the wild plac-
es, hurdling through the heathers, into glens and valleys and over the Reeks." "They also provided raw materials of antler, hide, tallow, and venison for food. Deer appear in medieval texts as dam alliad (wild ox), lóeg allaid (wild calf), and the daimh (stag) figure prominently in the life of St Ciarán of Clonmacnoise, where the motifs are depicted on Celtic Crosses. A story is told that a stag offered his antlers as a bookstand for Ciarán." O'Sullivan also pointed to local connections, including St Gobnait's journey through Kilgobnet following a prophecy of nine white deer on Mullach an Ois, summit of the deer, adding that even the Irish word for blessings, beannachtaí, derives its root from beann, the stag’s antler. "When we stand on Cnoc Rír, Bunrower, or Ross Island for the next few weeks we will hear the wistful whining of the hind or the raucous bellowing of the stag at the rutting season, being part of the aural landscape of Killarney stretching over the aeons, from the cusp of the Ice Age," O’Sullivan said.

KASI launches new inclusive community singing group Killarney Immigrant Support Centre (KASI) has announced the launch of Killarney Le Chéile Singalong, a new free community singing initiative designed to bring together local residents from all backgrounds.
SOLIDARITY PERFORMANCE: Cast, crew, and organisers of The Gaza Monologues following their performance at the Gleneagle
"Gaza Monologues" raises over €4,500 for displaced families
A collaborative performance of The Gaza Monologues at the Gleneagle Hotel raised €4,677 to assist displaced families and medical aid operations in Gaza. The funds were distributed between ten displaced Palestinian families via mutual aid groups and the charity Children Not Numbers, which provides medical and emotional support to vulnerable children in the region. The production opened with local resident Mohammed Anabtawi reading a child’s account from Gaza. Performers from Killarney and West Cork presented songs of solidarity alongside monologues describing life in the region. The finale featured musician Martin Leahy performing 'We Remember', accompanied by director Nasser Al-Swirki listing traditional towns and villages across Palestine.
Following the performance, Sally MacMonagle chaired a panel discussion featuring Al-Swirki and humanitarian Caoimhe Butterly, who discussed their experiences in Gaza and ways the public can support relief efforts. Organisers Killarney for Palestine and West Cork for Palestine confirmed they are making the production available to theatre companies and solidarity groups across Ireland. Killarney for Palestine continues to hold a monthly public vigil outside Killarney Courthouse on the final Sunday of each month. Further information on the beneficiary charity is available at childrennotnumbers.org.
The ten-week programme begins on Tuesday, October 6, with sessions running every Tuesday from 7.00pm to 8.00pm at the Anam Centre on East Avenue. The group is open to all members of the public with no auditions, fees, or prior musical experience required. Songs will be taught by ear, featuring a mix of Irish folk tunes, modern classics, gospel, and international music. KASI Coordinator Marilyn Catapat-Counihan highlighted the role of music in building social connections across the local community. "Music has a wonderful way of bringing people together," Catapat-Counihan said. "You don’t have to speak the same language, come from the same place, or have the same life experience to enjoy singing a song together. That is really what Killarney Le Chéile Singalong is about, creating a relaxed and welcoming
space where people can meet, have fun, and feel part of the community." Participants are also invited to suggest their own favourite songs to help build a shared repertoire reflecting the diverse cultures within the town. Further details on the weekly sessions are available by contacting Marilyn Catapat-Counihan on 086-7915742, Brian Vandamme on 083-3767513, or through the KASI office on 064-6620705.
Cllr Martin Grady calls for review of protection applicant identity law Independent Councillor Martin Grady has submitted a notice of motion calling on Kerry County Council to write to the Minister for Justice requesting a review of Section 26 of the International Protection Act 2015. Under current legislation, Section 26 prohibits the publication or broadcast of any details likely to identify an applicant for international protection without their consent, with breaches carrying potential criminal penalties. While acknowledging that confidentiality protections exist to prevent risks to applicants or their families abroad, Cllr Grady questioned whether the current law strikes the right balance when an
applicant is involved in separate criminal proceedings. He stated that standard court reporting rules and lawful Garda public appeals should apply consistently if a person is charged with a criminal offence, regardless of their status within the international protection system. Cllr Grady said public confidence in the justice system relies on transparency and consistency, while fully maintaining the presumption of innocence until proven guilty. The motion asks the Department of Justice to clarify the distinction between protecting an applicant's confidential protection file and publishing their identity if they appear before the criminal courts.

250th anniversary of Arthur Young’s visit A special guided walk took place through Killarney National Park to mark the 250th anniversary of English writer and agriculturist Arthur Young’s historic visit to Muckross in September 1776. Organised to trace Young's original route across the Muckross Peninsula, participants re-imagined the landscape encountered by the influential travel writer during his stay with the Herbert family while gathering research for his book A Tour in Ireland. National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) Conservation Ranger Shonagh
Gray led the walk, offering historical context and detailed insights into the flora, fauna, and heritage of the landed gentry on the estate. Walkers observed seasonal autumn highlights along the route, including flowering arbutus trees bearing bright berries, sloes, yew, and hawthorn across the woodland. The route highlighted key natural features of the peninsula, leading through gleaming exposed limestone terrain and the dense moss and fungi carpet of Reenadinna Yew Wood. Photos: Valerie O'Sullivan

Killarney Water Rescue assists in Lough Ennell search: Body found Volunteers from the Killarney Water Rescue Search and Recovery Team deployed to County Westmeath this week to assist in the multi-agency operation on Lough Ennell following the disappearance of a young fisherman. Killarney Water Rescue was deployed with specialist Search and Rescue Dogs.
The search had commenced on Sunday, September 20 after the man's abandoned fishing boat was discovered on an
island within the lake. The search was stood down on its tenth day, Tuesday, September 29, when a body was recovered from the lake. Killarney Water Rescue was tasked directly by An Garda Síochána and local rescue coordinators at Lilliput Water Rescue to support the operation. The local crew deployed with specialist ISSARD (Ireland’s Specialist Search and Rescue Dogs)
water search dogs to assist in covering the water. Over 600 volunteers turned out on Saturday alone to assist state agencies and volunteer units, with searchers arriving from across Ireland to support the local effort. Poor underwater visibility presented severe challenges for diving teams working on the lakebed. The operation involved the Garda Water Unit, Garda Dog Unit, Civil Defence, and multiple volunteer sub-aqua units including Longford, Offaly, Roscommon, Athlone, Mullingar, and Lough Ree.

Anseo at KCC Killarney Community College has officially launched the Anseo Programme, a national initiative designed to support and improve student attendance, following a recent Parent Information Evening. Anseo, meaning ‘Present’ in Irish, is a school-based attendance support programme developed by Tusla Education Support Services (TESS) and the Department of Education and Youth. It helps schools use attendance data to identify patterns, understand barriers to attendance and develop timely, targeted supports. Using a three-tiered approach, Anseo promotes positive attendance at student, class and whole-school level, helping ensure every student has the opportunity to make the most of their time in school. KCC is proud to be participating in Phase 2 of the national rollout, with 150 schools taking part during the 2026/27 academic year. Principal Ms Loughnane welcomed the initiative, highlighting the importance of regular attendance as a foundation for student success and emphasising the importance of working in partnership with students and parents. As part of the launch, parents were introduced to the College’s first attendance initiative, which began on Monday, 21 September and will run for five weeks leading up to the
October midterm break. Students achieving 100% attendance each week will be entered into a weekly prize draw, with a larger prize draw taking place at the end of the term. Sixth-year student Hebe Gao, who has achieved 100% attendance throughout her time at KCC, spoke about the importance of being present in school and the opportunities regular attendance provides to listen, participate, ask questions and remain engaged with learning. Teacher and past pupil Shane Fleming highlighted the particular importance of attendance in practical subjects, where missing lessons can mean missing key stages of project work. Local businesswoman and photographer Marie Carroll-O’Sullivan of Little Memory Gallery also spoke about attendance from a parent’s perspective, highlighting the importance of school not only for academic learning, but also for friendships, confidence and social development. Marie officially launched the programme alongside Ms Loughnane by cutting the ribbon. We look forward to working with our students, families and the Anseo team throughout the year to promote positive attendance and help every student get the most from their time at KCC. Being present matters. Anseo at KCC.

Budget 2027 to be revealed on Tuesday As households across Ireland continue to face rising living costs, attention is turning to Budget 2027, which will be unveiled by the Government next Tuesday. With petrol and diesel prices rising above €2 a litre in some areas and heating oil costs also increasing, households will be looking to the Budget for
measures to ease pressure on transport and home heating costs. Prospective first-time buyers will be hoping for something to address the housing crisis, which seems to worsen every year as the number of people living in emergency accommodation increase monthly. As there were no significant tax breaks for ordinary people last year, people will be hoping for some help
in this years budget to help ease the cost of living. With inflation rising each month and food prices expected to increase in 2027, workers are looking for something to help ease the burden of the growing financial pressure. It will be Simon Harris’s first budget as Minister for Finance. A rise in the pension and a rise in fuel allowance are among topics of discussion in the last week.
Living Wage has increased by 60c per hour The Living Wage in Ireland has increased to €16 per hour for 2026/27, up 3.9% from €15.40 last year. The Living Wage Technical Group said the new rate reflects rising living costs and changes to income policies affecting workers’ take-home pay. Minimum living costs increased by an average of 3.1% over the past year, with rents rising by 4.7% and household energy costs increasing by 29.2%. The introduction of the My Future Fund auto-enrolment pension scheme also affected the calculation, with employee contributions currently set at 1.5% of earnings. The calculated reference rate was €16.35, but the Technical Group capped this year’s increase at €16.00, in line with private-sector earnings growth. The Living Wage is calculated based on the cost of goods and services required for a single full-time worker without dependants to maintain a basic but dignified standard of living.
New AI glasses given to people with sight loss in Kerry People with sight loss in Kerry have received new Ray-Ban Meta AI glasses as Vision Ireland’s nationwide roadshow brought the technology directly to communities. The roadshow is part of a programme to distribute 15,000 pairs of the glasses, donated by Meta to people who are blind or vision-impaired across Ireland. The glasses use artificial intelligence to provide information about the user’s surroundings and support greater independence in everyday life. They can read printed and digital text, identify and describe objects, provide live translation and allow users to make hands-free calls. Recipients in Kerry also received initial training to help them understand the
technology and explore how it can support their daily lives. Vision Ireland CEO Chris White said the roadshow was about ensuring people received the glasses in their own communities, alongside the support needed to use them confidently. More than 2,000 people have registered their interest since the donation was announced in August. The glasses are available to eligible adults who are blind or vision-impaired and resident in the Republic of Ireland. Vision Ireland is continuing to hold gifting and training events nationwide. Eligible people can register their interest at meta.vi.ie or by calling 01 882 1910.

Causeway student named Young Historian of the Year A Causeway student has been named Kerry Young Historian of the Year 2026 at an awards ceremony held at Tralee Library on Thursday evening. Cathal Slattery, a student at Causeway Comprehensive School, received the award for his essay and presentation on Lady Arbella Denny of Lixnaw, a philanthropist and daughter of renowned surveyor William Petty. The Kerry Young Historian Award is an annual initiative of the Kerry Archaeological and Historical Society, Kerry County Museum and Kerry County Council, supported by Education Centre Tralee and the Kerry branch of the History Teachers Association of Ireland.
Open to young people aged 12 to 19, the competition encourages students to research local history, archaeology, architecture and heritage, with a particular focus on lesser-known Kerry stories. Seven students from six secondary schools across the county took part this year. Molly Walsh of Presentation Secondary School, Listowel, was awarded second place for her essay on the Woulfe family’s fight for Irish freedom, while Fran Hanafin of Mercy Mounthawk Secondary School, Tralee, took third place for her work on Richard Kelliher VC. Four other students were highly commended for their projects exploring topics including the Great Famine, slavery in Ireland and the Moonlighters.
44 dog fouling fines issued in 2025 Just 44 fines were issued by local authorities across Ireland for dog fouling in 2025, according to figures gathered by Vision Ireland.
The charity has highlighted the issue as part of its Clear Our Paths campaign, running from September 28 to October 2, which aims to raise awareness of obstacles faced by people who are blind or vision impaired. A Vision Ireland survey of 220 people found that 99% had been affected by temporary footpath obstacles, including dog waste. Dog fouling can create slipping hazards and cause particular difficulties for long cane users. Kerry recorded the highest number of dog fouling fines last year, with 12, while
17 local authorities issued none. The national total fell from 48 fines in 2024. The on-the-spot fine for dog fouling increased to €250 on September 1, but 77% of survey respondents said they did not believe the increase would make a difference. Vision Ireland also highlighted the problem of cars parked on footpaths. Some 21,352 fines were issued nationally in 2025, with 69% of respondents identifying parked cars as the most common obstacle blocking their route. Kevin Kelly, Head of Policy and External Affairs at Vision Ireland, called for greater monitoring and enforcement and urged the public to consider the needs of people who are blind or vision impaired.
Kerry house prices rise by 0.6% The average price of a second-hand three-bedroom semi-detached house in Kerry rose by 0.6% to €387,500 over the past three months, according to the latest REA Average House Price Index. The survey found that properties across the county took an average of six weeks to reach sale agreed. Killarney recorded a 1.2% increase, with the average three-bed semi now costing €415,000, while prices in Tralee re-
mained unchanged at €360,000. “Demand still remains high, as the number of properties for sale are limited,” said Donal Culloty of REA Coyne and Culloty, Killarney. “We are seeing a high demand for new A-rated properties.” First-time buyers accounted for 30% of purchases in Kerry during the quarter, while landlords leaving the market were responsible for 15% of sales. The survey also found that A-rated prop-
erties commanded a 5% price premium compared with comparable C-rated homes. Nationally, the average price of a threebed semi rose 0.6% to €370,293 over the quarter, representing a 4.7% annual increase. This marks a slowdown from the 8.7% annual growth recorded at the end of 2025. The REA index tracks actual selling prices for typical second-hand three-bedroom semi-detached homes across Ireland.

The Roasting Of Ed Sheeran! NICKY BARRY
Poor ole singer redhead Ed, a multimillionaire, Has landed in a quaqmire, that some think isn’t fair. One side is his loyal fans, and then there are the others, Folks who have agendas, about the world’s problems. Ed is really one of us, with a Wexford Granny, For whom he wrote a song, proud of his ancestry. He writes simple love songs, for he’s just a troubadour, With feelings for humanity, for which he is adored. He‘s not a politician, but just an entertainer, Touring all around the world, with many Irish players. Rapper Macklemore on stage, made a declaration, ‘To Free Palestine’, which caused consternation. The Jewish venue owner, then demanded he be dropped, From the touring circus, and so the other acts pulled out. Caught between a rock and hard place, Ed made his decision, To continue singing, and this incurred wide derision, From the key-board warriors, who really went to town, Condemning Ed with venom, for not stepping down. After mature reflection, Ed reckoned he was wrong, And so he apologised, for only wanting to sing songs!

Central Bank reduces Insurance levy to 0% The Central Bank of Ireland has reduced the Insurance Compensation Fund Levy (ICF) to 0%, which will take effect from 1 January 2027. It is the first time the levy has been set at 0% since it came into effect in 2012. This marks the second change in the levy in two years, following the reduction from 2% to 1% in January 2026. The ICF was established to protect policyholders in the event of insurer insolvency. Since 2011, the Exchequer has advanced approximately €1 billion to the Fund following the administration of Quinn Insurance Limited. The levy was reintroduced at 2% to repay this loan and as of September this year the final amount was repaid in full. The change will affect many customers with non-life insurance policies such as home and motor insurance (if the motor insurance firm is regulated by the Central Bank of Ireland). The fund is collected by the Revenue Commissioners and used to pay compensation to consumers for claims on failed insurance firms. Deputy Governor Mary-Elizabeth McMunn said: “The Insurance Compensation Fund protects eligible policy holders in the event of their insurer going into liquidation. The changes announced today reflect the financial position of the fund and follows the full repayment of the outstanding loan balance to the Exchequer. The reduction of the levy will positively impact a large cohort of policyholders in Ireland. The Central Bank will continue to conduct annual reviews of the fund and, should circumstances change, the levy

may change in the future.” Welcoming the Central Bank’s announcement, Tánaiste and Minister for Finance Simon Harris commented: “I welcome the announcement of a reduction in the levy to 0% from the first of January 2027. This marks the second change in the levy in two years, following its reduction from 2% to 1% in January 2026. “At a time when households are experiencing cost of living pressures, the reduction will have a direct and positive impact on the cost of insurance for approximately 2.35 million private motor insurance policies and 1.3 million home insurance policies on renewal next year.”

NEWS
2.10.2026 Jack and Felicity trudged back to the car after being given their task by Mary to go and retrieve Halloween decorations from his aunt in Kenmare.
A weekly series from Killarney Advertiser's Jess Jukes
“Have you ever been through Moll’s Gap?” Jack asked her as they passed the turn off for Muckross House and the traditional farms. “No,” she said, “the last time we tried to go through the park there were road closures because of the fires.” Summer had been too hot , for the people, for the animals, for the fields, and for the National Park. “Well then, I’ve got a treat for you,” he said. They made their way through the dips and weaves of the road that seemed to continue forever. They sung along to Radio Kerry as they went, open windows and music blaring despite the cold misty rain that had settled over the mountaintops and lakes. They were going around a series of rather tight bends when they turned a corner to see a tight looking tunnel. Felicity nearly jumped out of her skin as Jack beeped the horn as they passed under it. She shot him a glare. “What? It’s tradition!” he objected. The tension didn’t take long to dissolve as she laughed at his indignation. As soon as she stopped giggling, Jack started to talk. “There are so many local folktales that come up around Halloween. Like the story about the girl on the bike.” Felicity smiled. “What story?” she asked. That was all the invitation Jack needed. “Well, years ago there was a girl who cycled home through the national park. One dark night, she was knocked off of her bike and died near Derrycunihy Church. Legend has it that if you’re driving past the church at nighttime and look in your rearview mirror, you’ll see her cycling on her bike, still trying to get home.” Felicity watched the road as Jack told the story. The bends they were driving were treacherous. As Jack finished speaking, an old stone bridge came into view. Beyond the bridge was a derelict abandoned church, rising out of the fog. Its windows were boarded up and it certainly looked like it could be haunted. “And this,” Jack paused for dramatic effect, “is where she died.” Felicity chanced a glance in the rearview mirror, but saw only clear road as they left the church behind them. She heard Jack chuckle. “It’s daytime silly, you won’t see her now.”
KENMARE
Jack spent the rest of the trip teasing Felicity about her superstition. Before long they arrived in Kenmare. Jack pulled up to a home in a small housing estate. As soon as he shut off the engine, the door opened. A short red-haired lady came out to meet them. As she did, three children shot out from behind her and darted to the field on the other side of the road. “Be careful! And look where you’re go-
ing, “ the lady shouted after them. She turned her attention back to Jack and Felicity. “Jack dear, how are you? I heard you’d had quite the adventure over summer.” Felicity tried not to laugh at Jack’s grimace as the woman pulled him down into a hug with a nasty wet kiss on his cheek. She was small but mighty, it seemed. “Nothing worse than normal Auntie Shelly. You know how it is. How are you?” She seemed to perk up at the question. “Good good, you know me. I always try to keep busy. Between the kids being back in school and helping organise the Halloween Howl, it’s all bustling down here. How’s your mother?” It seemed community involvement and event planning was a big interest in Jack’s family. Even their jaunt up Carrauntoohil had been spearheaded by Jack. Their conversation continued as they went inside. Jack paused to introduce Felicity before his aunt practically forced them to sit at her kitchen table. She pushed hot tea into their hands and sat with them. “It’s a busy season. We’re not as big as Killarney, but when it comes to Halloween I like to think we have the same amount of enthusiasm.” She gestured towards some old photos on the wall, with what looked like a young Jack amongst a crowd of other children. “Do you remember when you and the cousins went around doing the spooky orienteering?” Jack nodded. “The older cousins used to love jumping out at us from the forest. I think Mom lost it one year after I came home covered in mud from falling because I was so scared.” “Yes, I remember that!” Shelly laughed. “It’s on this evening actually. I was wonder if you’d take your smaller cousins to it? Michelle is away and we don’t know if she’ll be back for it this evening.” “I mean,” Jack said glancing at Felicity. “Mam won’t need the decorations until tomorrow... We could stay around for the afternoon and go to the orienteering later on. It’d be a late enough drive home but it’d be fun.” Felicity considered it. “I’m happy to hang around. I haven’t see much outside of Killarney.” “That’s brilliant!” Shelly exclaimed. “We’ll take you out somewhere nice for dinner before you set off. Give me a bit to get ready. Make yourselves at home in the meantime.” She marched out of the room. “Jack, you know where the tea and the TV remote are.” She shouted over her shoulder as she went. “Well, I guess that’s our evening plans sorted,” Felicity laughed. “Let me just text Auntie Sheila and let her know I won’t be home until late.” They settled into the living room to wait. “Will you help me study for my driving theory test?” Tune in next week to see what happens ...

| COMMENT By Adam Moynihan The contentious will they/won’t they Ireland versus Israel debate came to a head in Debrecen last Saturday when goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu withdrew from the squad in protest at Israel’s actions in Gaza. The issue has been a hot topic since the draw for the Nations League was made in Brussels in February with the majority of Irish fans and PFAI members in favour of a boycott in solidarity with the people of Palestine. The Irish know what it’s like to be colonised, persecuted, starved and killed. What the Palestinians have been subjected to during this genocide is horrific beyond words; allowing the perpetrators of these crimes to use football as a means of sportswashing their image is just plain wrong. Nevertheless, the FAI had always insisted the games would be played, but Bazunu’s unexpected 11th hour decision kickstarted the most dramatic day in Irish football since Saipan. Team training and a press conference were delayed as the group argued at length over what they should do next. A number of players – eight according to reports – voted against playing the match, which was due to take place the following night. The majority, fourteen, voted to carry on as planned. When the FAI confirmed the outcome of the vote and the plan to go ahead with the fixture at a tetchy press conference that afternoon, fans were divided. Some took aim at the manager, others at the players themselves. While it must be acknowledged that the manager and players are all adults and some of the responsibility lies with them, the FAI must surely take the lion’s share of the blame. The Association’s handling of this situation has been questionable from the start. When Ireland were placed in Group G alongside Israel at the draw in February, CEO David Courell and President Paul Cooke quickly exited the venue, abandoning Hallgrímsson who was left to field questions about the highly controversial matches alone. The Association then speedily produced a statement insisting that the fixtures would be fulfilled – ignoring the staunchly pro-Palestine sentiment that exists in this country. Moving the home Israel fixture away from Dublin due to “operational challeng-
es” and to stage it behind closed doors was another move that angered supporters. It removed their right to protest at the game, and it stripped the team of valuable home advantage. Perhaps most egregiously, the FAI fell well short of their stated aim of protecting the players during this tumultuous episode. In fact, at the end they actually left everything up to the players via the infamous last-minute vote, which the FAI then confirmed publicly, effectively saying “the players want this game to happen”. This simultaneously put unwarranted public pressure on the squad, while also revealing to the world that the group is divided. Bazunu, meanwhile, was left completely isolated in his one-man boycott. He was excluded from the team meeting and the vote, and he watched the match back at the hotel alone. According to Brian Kerr, who spoke with the Bolton goalkeeper on Saturday, Bazunu was feeling “low” and “shunned”. Kerr also said it had been suggested to Bazunu that it would be better if he left the squad (al-

FAI responsible for debacle in Debrecen though he was ultimately welcomed back into the fold). While Bazunu has been widely praised for his bravery, including, now, by his manager, he has also been subjected to online abuse by Israeli commenters and elements of the far right at home and abroad. It must also be said that the FAI’s performance at Saturday’s press conference was passive at best. Allowing Heimir to bear the brunt of a forceful Israeli interrogation was unfair. How he could be expected to field questions about October 7th and Nazi Germany? At least one of Courell, Director of Football John Martin or Communications Manager Kieran Crowley should have intervened. The only modicum of credit they deserve comes via an acknowledgement that they were dealing with a complex set of circumstances with no simple and clean solution, a situation that was no doubt complicated fur-
ther by Bazunu’s late withdrawal. They were also abandoned by the Irish government who were guilty of talking out of both sides of their mouths on the matter. Minister for Sport Patrick O’Donovan said the fixtures should go ahead before clarifying that he, himself, would not attend. What does that even mean? The FAI were also left stranded by Uefa, who have refused to punish Israel despite clear violations of Uefa’s own rulebook – violations previously flagged by the FAI, who wanted Israel to be suspended. European football’s governing body did not hesitate to exclude Russia after the invasion of Ukraine. The double standards are hard to explain. Nevertheless, when the buck was passed to the FAI, it was up to them to make the right call on behalf of the Irish people. They could have gone along with the will of the nation, they could have gone with their collective conscience (they, themselves, are at pains to insist that they don’t actually want to play Israel), but they chose not to.
Instead they have prioritised money and six points in Uefa Nations League B (while conveniently sidestepping a potentially messy fallout with Uefa and the Israel FA). All the while wringing their hands over imagined sanctions which have been threatened by no one - apart from the FAI. So, to sum up, they failed to back up their own supposedly strong feelings about Israel, they failed to represent the feelings of the majority of Irish football, they failed to shield the manager, and they failed to protect the players, who are now dealing with hate from at least some of the fans who once adored them. It is grimly instructive that President Cooke thinks the FAI handled the week “quite well”. It would be intriguing to know what he thinks a bad week looks like. At least Irish football was spared the ignominy of losing to Israel in Hungary on Sunday night. They claimed a comfortable 3-0 win. To their credit, they showed some sol-
idarity with Palestine by bowing their heads during the Israeli national anthem and not shaking any Israeli hands before, during or after the match. Meanwhile, the small group of Israel supporters present showed their true colours by allegedly racially abusing Adam Idah, and chanting the name of the IDF – the army responsible for killing over 20,000 children in the past three years alone. On Monday the Irish squad travelled home ahead of last night’s fixture against Austria (which took place after this publication went to print). Further ‘Stop The Game’ protests were planned in and around the Aviva as fans and activists make one last push to prevent Ireland v Israel: Part 2 from becoming a reality. That return fixture – Ireland’s nominal home match – is currently scheduled for Sunday evening in Backa Topola, Serbia. There is still time for someone to join Bazunu on the right side of history. Just don’t expect it to be an FAI executive.

Eamonn Fitzgerald previews Round 1 of the Kerry SFC with 16 teams vying for the coveted Bishop Moynihan Cup East Kerry v Mid Kerry Saturday 5pm
The divisional board football teams have been involved in preliminary rounds, preparing them for Round 1 of the Kerry SFC, which gets underway this weekend with a full fixture list. Which team will lift the coveted Bishop Moynihan Cup, the blue riband of senior football in the county? Will Dingle hold on to their title or will Rathmore, the newly crowned club champions, continue on their winning ways? If a district board team wins out, Rathmore will then represent Kerry in the Munster and hopefully the All-Ireland club series. Here are my predictions of possible outcomes.
Venue: Austin Stack Park Referee: Séamus Mulvihill Mid Kerry always put up a good showing on the senior championship, Backboned by Kerry centre-back Mike Breen captain of Beaufort, narrowly pipped in the intermediate final by Fossa they also have Seán Coffey and the two O’Connors, Darragh and Jack. East Kerry are nothing like the strong winning teams of the past, with several EKB clubs now going it alone in the championship. Even with the Clifford brothers on board, Mid Kerry still have too many seasoned players. Without the Cliffords, who will be leading Fossa into senior go it alone ranks next season there is only one result.
____________________________________________________________________________
Rathmore v St Kieran’s Saturday at 2pm Venue: Fitzgerald Stadium Referee: Eoghan Ó Muircheartaigh Rathmore, the newly crowned club champions, will start as favourites and will be glad of such a swift return to The Park after their recent win in the club championship. Will Dan Murphy lift the second Cup later this summer? He made a great start by defeating Dr Crokes in the club final, while the ageless Kerry star Paul Murphy holds the centre-back position. William Casey continues in goal after an excellent club final. They have a big midfield pairing in Mark Ryan and Alan Dineen, while up front the half-forward line of Fionn Murphy, Cathal Ryan and Darragh Nagele is a potent line. Veteran John Moynighan is unlikely to start but expect Aidan O’Mahony to spring him from the bench if they need more scoring power. He excelled last time out, scoring 1-1 in those final 21 minutes. St Kieran’s draw from seven clubs backboned by Castleisland Desmonds, were well in control, defeating South Kerry 3-17 to 2-12, with Donal Daly settling the team with an early goal. Joy added another just before half-time to lead 2-7 to 0-8. Killian Dennehy scored goal number 3. Still, they will lack the cohesiveness of Rathmore. A shock result is unlikely.
Verdict: Rathmore ____________________________________________________________________________
South Kerry v Dr Crokes Saturday 3pm Venue: JP O’Sullivan Park Referee: Seán Joy Dr Crokes will be happy to get an early

Verdict: Mid Kerry
opportunity to erase the memory of their 4-point defeat to Rathmore. They still have enough experience to win despite injuries to midfielder Charlie Keating. Tony Brosnan and Cian McMahon should benefit from Mark O'Shea's midfield prowess, with veterans Shane Murphy, Fionn Fitzgerald and Brian Looney as reliable as ever. In the half-back line, Kerry stars Evan Looney, the Crokes captain and Gavin White have the experience to be the springboard for the attack. South Kerry have enough players to call on, but immigration, emigration and migration to faraway 3rd level colleges deprive them of many players. Still, they defeated East Kerry last week, the latter without the Twin Towers of Paudie and David. They will look to Shane O’Connor (Dromid Pearses) and St Mary's Oisín Moran and Cian O'Donoghue.
Kenmare Shamrocks v West Kerry Sunday 1.30pm
Verdict: Dr Crokes ____________________________________________________________________________
Austin Stacks v Milltown/Castlemaine Saturday 4pm Venue: Fitzgerald Stadium Referee: Evan Horan Stacks slipped up in last year’s county final when Paul Geaney’s late goal caught them off guard. They will have too much scoring potential for Milltown /Castlemaine, well beaten by Rathmore in the club semifinal. They are too dependent
on Jack O’Connor’s free taking to mount a winning tally. Stacks will rue the loss of Ben Murphy, my man of the match choice in last year's final. He has gone down under to the Australian game with Brisbane. Will fellow Stack midfielder Daniel Kirby, star of the Kerry All -Ireland U20 victory, follow him? The Aussies have him earmarked.
Verdict: Austin Stacks ____________________________________________________________________________
Spa v Dingle. Saturday 7.15pm Venue: Austin Stack Park Referee: Paul Hayes Spa drew the short straw in this one, meeting the All-Ireland club champions strengthened further this year by the return of Barry Dan, sidelined for almost a year recovering from ACL surgery. His midfield partner is Mark O’Connor, free to play with his hometown after the rigours of his Australian contract. He is carrying an injury, so may not start but will be available as they progress. Dingle are the firm favourites to regain the Bishop Moynihan Cup with a list of Kerry players Tom O’Sullivan and the Geaneys. Expect a very determined and influential Paul Geaney to show why he should have started as captain of Kerry in the 2026 All-Ireland final. It is a big ask for Spa, also for Evan Cronin and Dara Moynihan.
Verdict: Dingle
____________________________________________________________________________
Venue: Fitzgerald Stadium Referee: Connie O’Connor Kenmare Shamrocks are the 2026 County League Division 1 champions but were surprised in the Club Championship. This is an incentive to progress in the county championship. They will have county star Seán O’Shea leading the charge, and if they get enough frees within 50 metres for 2-pointer opportunities, I see them running up big scores. Donal Down O’Sullivan, transferred from Kilgarvan and on the Kerry panel at one stage, will operate at full forward alongside Kerry veteran Stephen O’Brien. Kieran Fitzgibbon is a fine keeper who got a few runs between the posts for Kerry. Veteran Paul O’Connor is still a great goalscorer. West Kerry are weakened by the loss of Dingle and An Ghaeltacht players.
Verdict: Kenmare Shamrocks ____________________________________________________________________________
Templenoe v An Ghaeltacht Sunday 3.30pm Venue: Fitzgerald Stadium Referee: Gerry Kelliher Templenoe have several Kerry senior panel members, including Kilian Spillane, Tadhg Morley and Gavin Crowley. This is the first big test for An Ghaeltacht, who
e Bishop... 2.10.2026
won the All-Ireland Intermediate title earlier this year and should have a more even balance than Templenoe. In the Gaeltacht team are Briain agus Ruaidhrí O’Béaglaíoch, Pádraig Óg Ó Sé and a big addition is former Cork dual star, Aidan Walshe.
COUNTY STAR: Dylan Geaney of Dingle. Photo: Brendan Moran/Sportsfile.
Verdict: An Ghaeltacht ____________________________________________________________________________
Na Gaeil v North Kerry Sunday 2.30pm Venue: Austin Stack Park Referee: Edmund Walsh Na Gaeil were desperately disappointed to lose the Kerry club semi-final to Dr Crokes. Level at full time, level after the first period of extra time, a dramatic comeback to level terms again and then to go out in the penalty shootout. That stinging defeat should be enough for the likes of Diarmuid O’Connor and Aidan Barry to outwit the North Kerry side drawing from several clubs and backed by Listowel players.
Verdict: Na Gaeil KERRY LGFA FINALS
It’s a busy weekend for Kerry LGFA with several county finals sponsored by Bon Secours down for decision.
JUNIOR PREMIER FINAL

St Paul’s set for big Super League opener | By Enda Walshe Utility Trust St Paul’s get their 2026/27 Super League season up and running on Saturday with an away fixture against Killester. The club will have two highly experienced players leading them into the new campaign. Irish International Lorraine Scanlon will be using her experience to great effect while Rheanne Kelly (O’Shea) returns after the birth of her first child. Both have been named as joint captains and their game nous will be crucial to their teams bid for honours. Coach James Fleming has assembled an exciting squad with Mairead McKenna, Julie O’Connor, Emma Buckley and Louise Scannell bolstering an already talented Irish core of Leah McMahon, Siofra O’Shea, Emma Costello and young guns Clodagh O’Sullivan, Annie Brosnan and Naoise O’Connor. Louise Scannell is a niece of current UCC Glanmire coach Mark, and she has played for the Cork outfit, winning every honour in the game. She has most recently played for Limerick Celtics where she

averaged eight points per game. She also enjoyed a stellar underage career with Ireland, playing with the U16, U18 and U20 teams. Denise Dunlea will sit out the season as she awaits the arrival of her newborn baby while Deirdre Geaney has stepped away from the squad. This season will also see the return of the All-Star Maisie Burnham. A stellar debut season with the club where she averaged over 22 points per game earned her a
Lakers to start new season in Pres Gym Utility Trust St Paul’s Lakers coach Luke O'Hea will be looking to build on what was a very solid start when the new National League Division 1 season gets underway with a home match against Templeogue on Saturday. The match will take place at 7.30pm in the Pres Gym. O’Hea has added to his squad with the acquisition of Jack Watkins, who hails from Decatur, Texas. The capture of Watkins is seen as a progressive step in the team's development. The 6 ft 4 guard had an illustrious college career with Ave Maria University where, in his career, he averaged 14 points per game, 5 rebounds, and 4 assists. Valters Mazburss has also been added to the Utility Trust St Pauls Lakers roster for the upcoming Men's National League season. Mazburss is a 6ft 5 guard/forward who hails from Riga in Latvia and has recently played for East Ball in his homeland. The squad is further boosted by the arrival of Evan Boyle from Tralee Warriors. The trio will join established league per-
formers Mark Sheehan, Jack O’Sullivan and Oisin Spring. Cathal will be looking to join brother Oisin on court while Adam O’Neill and Darragh O’Callaghan have all seen court time. Adam Whitty, Dara O’Sullivan and Cillian O'Leary will all be looking to push on this year and of course all these young players will benefit from the experience of the adopted Kerryman Rui Sariava. One familiar face who will be playing a limited part in the first half of the season is Eoin Carroll. The inside player is in Spain due to college commitments but will be available again in January. The club is also delighted to have James Fleming and Utility Trust on board again as sponsor for a second season. Without that support it would be impossible to compete in the league and a big thank you is extended to James for his generous sponsorship. The opening home fixtures will take place in the Pres Gym with a return to the Killarney Sports and Leisure Centre pencilled in for November, following the relaying of their floor after recent flood damage.
selection on the All-Star first team, and she was rightly lauded as one of the top professionals in the league. Coach James Fleming is very enthusiastic to work with Burnham again. “Maisie is coming off the back of an outstanding first season with us and now that she knows the club, the team and the community, she can only get even better. We are very keen to continue to build our challenge for major honours and Maisie is a very important

2.10.2026 block in that wall.” Burnham will be joined on court by Paula Reus Piza. Paula, from Palma De Mallorca in Spain, stands at 6 ft 1" and has played College basketball at New Mexico and Loyola Marymount. At New Mexico she had a season high 25 points against Eastern Illinois and she proved her versatility when netting five three pointers against Nevada in the same season. Her finest hour in Marymount came against Santa Clara when she played a leading role in their 2025/26 season win. Paula has also represented her native Spain at U16 level in 2019 at the FIBA Women's European Championships. Angelina Robles is a native of San Diego, the 5ft 5 guard will be hoping to bring her creativity to the fore in her first professional season. Angelina had a stellar college career where she stood out for both South Dakota and Denver. She was in Denver from 2022 to 2025, where she made 87 appearances and averaged 7.6 points per game. Having competed in the final in their first season back in the big time and topping the standings last year, Utility Trust St Paul’s are suited and booted for a title challenge. With a strong squad assembled, the eyes are very definitely on the prize. The opening run of home games will take place in the Presentation Gym, while the Killarney Sports and Leisure Centre continue its repairs from recent flooding, with a return in November pencilled in.

SPORT NOTES
Killarney Athletic YOUNG BLUES: Killarney Athletic’s Under 14 Kerry Schoolboys League side made a winning start to their campaign with a 3-2 victory over Camp at Woodlawn. Bryanne Ouattara and William Sjogren put Athletic 2-1 ahead before Trey Hurley scored the decisive goal to secure all three points. After a lengthy break from competitive football, there was some rustiness, but the team showed excellent character to battle through a tight contest. The Under 14D side welcomed MEK A to Ferndale and, after falling two goals behind early on, responded through Finn McDonald. Leon Saczawa added two goals as Athletic remained competitive for long periods before MEK eventually won 6-3. UNDER 15 BOYS: Athletic’s Under 15B side recorded an impressive 6-4 away win over Castleisland B in Division 1. Athletic led 5-1 at half-time, with Brayanne Ouattara scoring five times in an outstanding first-half display. Castleisland briefly threatened a comeback with three goals in five minutes, but Athletic regained control and Cian Lenehan added the sixth goal. In the Under 15C league, Athletic travelled to Mastergeeha and came away with a good victory. Donncha Slattery scored three, with Oran Barrett adding two and William Sjogren, Rian Horgan, Daniel Cremin and Luke O’Sullivan also finding the net. In the National Cup, Athletic’s Under 15 side faced a difficult opening fixture against last season’s finalists Dingle Bay Rovers. Dingle led 4-1 at half-time and eventually went 6-1 ahead, but Athletic finished strongly. Rory Moynihan and Darragh O’Toole scored late, while Trey Hurley added a fine free kick to leave the final score 6-4. Athletic will now enter the National Trophy competition. GIRLS TEAMS IN ACTION: The Under 12 Premier Division girls recorded an excellent 6-2 victory over Camp. Marielle Nomikos was the star of the afternoon with four goals, while Jessie Doolan and Fiadh Driver also scored. The Under 14 Division 1 team came from behind to defeat Fenit 5-2. Fenit led 2-1 at half-time, but Athletic produced a much stronger second-half performance. Holly Shevlin scored a hattrick after moving into the forward line, while Alanna McGlynn and Julie Quinlan also scored. Alanna McGlynn was named Player of the Match following a tireless display. The Under 16 Premier League girls were narrowly defeated 2-1 by MEK. Despite having no substitutes, the Athletic players gave everything throughout a fiercely contested game and were unfortunate not to come away with a point. Evie Doolan and Roisin O’Sullivan were among Athletic’s strongest performers. The Under 14B girls suffered a 4-0 defeat to Listowel Celtic, but there were encouraging signs, with strong performances from the midfield, wingers and back four. The team continued to work
hard and support each other throughout the game.

Celtic led 2-0 at half time but Kenmare came back in the 2nd half to take the points. U13 DIV 3: Killarney Celtic D 1-1 Ballyhar Dynamos. Buhle Schreurs. Celtic D played out a 1-1 draw with Ballyhar. With many of the players making their debut on a big pitch, it was a fine effort by the squad. GIRLS U12 DIV 1 SOUTH: Killorglin AFC 1-1 Killarney Celtic. Hope O'Brien. Mastergeeha U12 GIRL’S DIVISION 1 SOUTH: QPR B 1 V Mastergeeha 3. Goal Scorer: Ellie Lynch O'Doherty (3). Our u12 girls travelled to Rathmore to Play QPR B this afternoon. Mastergeeha got into an early 2-0 lead thanks to goals from Ellie Lynch O'Doherty. QPR pulled 1 back before half time. The second saw plenty of chances for both sides before eventually Ellie scored a 3rd and completed her hat trick. Well done to all the girls today in a tough game against a good QPR B side. U13 GIRL’S PREMIER: Mastergeeha A 4 V MEK A 2 22/9. A fantastic match between two strong sides. Mastergeeha opened the scoring midway through the first half when Gracie Maher found the net, but MEK responded before half-time to level the game. Mastergee-
ha came out strongly in the second half and regained the lead through Olivia O’Connor with a crucial second goal. Gracie Maher then added two more to complete her hat-trick and put Mastergeeha firmly in control. MEK responded with a well-taken free kick to reduce the deficit, but Mastergeeha held firm to see out a hard-fought victory. A brilliant contest from start to finish, with both sides showing great determination and quality. U14 GIRLS PREMIER: Mastergeeha 4 v Inter Kenmare 2 25/9. U15 BOY’S NATIONAL CUP ROUND 1: Adare United 2 v Mastergeeha FC 3. Michael O’Donoghue 4’, Karl Thompson 20’ 53’. 2nd Round secured! Mastergeeha came away from Adare with a hard-fought 3–2 victory this afternoon to book our place in the 2nd Round of the National Cup. We got off to the perfect start, with Michael O’Donoghue opening the scoring in the 4th minute, meeting a beautifully delivered corner from Shane O’Sullivan and finding the net. On 20 minutes, Karl Thompson doubled our advantage. Karl latched onto a perfectly weighted through ball from Evan Burke, showing great composure to finish and make it 2–0. Adare responded with a goal just before halftime to bring the game back to 2–1 at the break. Just eight minutes into the second half, Karl grabbed his second of the afternoon. After some scrappy play inside the box, he reacted quickest to direct the ball into the net and restore Mastergeeha’s two-goal advantage. Adare never stopped running and pulled another goal back with around 10 minutes remaining to set up a nervy finish. The boys showed excellent game management and composure in the closing stages, seeing out the final minutes to secure a valuable 3–2 victory and progress to the next round.
Spa GAA SPA JUNIORS: Spa Men’s Juniors were crowned Cahill Cup champions after a thrilling extra-time victory over Annascaul B, winning 1-21 to 1-16 in a final that had virtually everything. After an evenly contested opening, Spa began to find their rhythm, with two-pointers from Mikey Moynihan and Niall Mac helping them establish a 0-10 to 0-6 half-time lead. Spa continued to dominate early in the second half, with Niall Mac adding three quick points before Liam Spillane got on the scoresheet and Michael Horgan struck for a crucial goal to put Spa 1-14 to 0-7 ahead. Annascaul, however, produced a remarkable fightback, chipping away at the deficit and eventually drawing level to force extra time. Spa responded strongly once again, opening up a six-point advantage, but Annascaul refused to give up and ensured a tense finish. The drama reached its peak in the dying moments when Annascaul were awarded a penalty, only for Spa goalkeeper Jack O'Sullivan to produce a superb save to preserve his side's ad-
vantage and secure the Cahill Cup. At the presentation, Diarmuid Cahill accepted the trophy on behalf of his victorious Spa teammates, bringing a memorable afternoon to a fitting conclusion. SPA DRAW DINGLE: Spa have been drawn against current All-Ireland Senior Club champions Dingle in Round 1 of the Garvey’s SuperValu Senior Football County Championship. The sides will meet under the lights at Austin Stacks Park on Saturday, October 3rd, with throw-in at 7.15pm. U10 BOYS: Spa U10 Boys took a break from football last weekend for their annual team building outing, enjoying a morning of Pitch and Putt at Deer Park. There was plenty of healthy competition, team challenges, encouragement and, most importantly, lots of fun as the boys tried something different, with many keen to continue playing. The morning was rounded off with pizza and homemade Spa cake, with thanks to coach Lenora O'Donoghue for the excellent bake. Thanks also to Eoin Cronin for organising the outing, fellow coaches Padraig Lynch, Declan Kelliher, Diarmuid Coakley, James Daly and Patrick Cronin for their support, and Shirley Murphy of Deer Park Pitch and Putt Club for her help and assistance. The club also appreciates the generous support of Spa GAA Coiste na nÓg and the Club 7s Committee in funding the outing. These occasions are a great opportunity for team building and friendship, demonstrating that there is more to Spa than just football.
Dr Crokes GAA MOLYNEAUX CUP FINAL: Dr. Crokes 1:11 Austin Stacks 1:17. Our bid for a 13th consecutive Molyneaux Cup title came to an end on Sunday as Austin Stacks claimed victory. We started brightly, with Rob O’Shea opening the scoring before Josh Fleming, Darragh O’Sullivan and Brendan Falvey added points. Stacks, however, finished the half strongly to lead 0-08 to 0-05 at the break. We came out fighting in the second half, with Dara O’Shea scoring a goal and adding a two-pointer, while Killian Collins and Cian O’Neill also got on the scoresheet. Stacks responded with some crucial scores of their own, including a late goal and two-pointer, to secure the win. U16 EAST KERRY CHAMPIONSHIP: Dr. Crokes 3:21 Legion 4:17. The U16 boys East Kerry Division 1 kicked off on Sunday morning with a quarter final against Legion, the second meeting in 6 days. This game ebbed and flowed throughout, Dr. Crokes leading by 11 points at half time, to be pegged back to all square at full time. Extra time beckoned and at half time of extra time, our lads were 4 points down. But the best was yet to come great scoring and a well contested football contest saw Dr. Crokes reduce the lead to 2 points with time almost up, then a late goal secured victory, and a place in next week’s semi-final. Very well

made the trip to Fossa for a very enjoyable weekend where their Mother’s and Others and their U-14 Girls played their Fossa counterparts. There was craic, there was ceoil, there was damhsa agus peil. David Clifford dropped in to share some words of wisdom and local trad musician Maidhc Kelliher entertained the spectators before the Fossa and Tara U14 Ladies put their Gaelic football skills on display in a very sporting challenge match (expertly refereed by juvenile referee Aaron O'Sullivan). Thanks to the Londoners and their manager - Fossa native Mark Terry - for making the trip. We were delighted to host you. New friendships formed and hopefully we will all cross paths again soon. LOTTO: The numbers drawn on 27/09/2026 for a jackpot of €11,250 were 13, 17, 21, 22. There was no jackpot winner. The €40 consolation prize winners were Mick Myers, Margaret Cunningham, Mary McCarthy, Fiona Coffey, Simon and Beth Coffey. Tickets are available from our sellers and can also be bought online. MCELLIGOTT CUP: Our Golden Nugget sponsored senior B team came up against stiff opposition in Laune Rangers B in the McElligott Cup final in Beaufort on Saturday afternoon. This was always going to be a big test and so it proved to be. Rian Colleran kicked a fabulous opening score, but Rangers quickly asserted their dominance around the middle of the field, the livewire Peadar Kelliher got forward to score an opportunistic goal for Fossa in the 13th minute but for the most part, Rangers controlled proceedings and led at the break 1-08 to 1-03. Fossa enjoyed a good opening to the second half with two fine scores from Tadgh O’Shea and a point from Rocco Sheehan briefly reducing the deficit to two points. Rangers, however had too much quality in the forwards and pushed the lead out to six before Peadar Kelliher struck for his second goal of the day to give Fossa a glimmer of hope. In spite of the best efforts of the Fossa boys, led by their captain Dan O’Keeffe, they couldn’t bridge the gap and a late two pointer from Cian O’Shea wasn’t enough as Laune Rangers ran out winners on a score of 1-16 to 2-09. Team; Ryan Brady, Francis Moran, Cian Doyle, Derek O’Gorman, Dan O’Keeffe (Capt), David Butler, Peadar Kelliher 2-1, Rian Colleran 0-1, Cian O’Shea 0-2, Shay McCormick, Michael O’Dwyer, Mark Donnellan, Cathal Breen, Rocco Sheehan 0-3, Ryan O’Leary, Fintan Coffey, Tadgh O’Shea 0-2, Mark Dennehy. U14 EAST KERRY FINAL: Kilcummin 5-10 Rathmore 3-14. Our U14’s are East Kerry Division 1 champions after a tremendous final played in excellent conditions at Gneeveguilla GAA Club grounds on Tuesday evening. Rathmore had a dream start, registering 2-1 without reply inside the opening 5 minutes. A brilliant goal from team captain Cillian Sheehan was our opening score of the evening and a second goal by Donnacha O’Callaghan moments later brought us right back into the game. Rathmore had a purple patch again thereafter however to lead at half time 3-7 to 2-3. Sean O’Connor scored an excellent point just before the short whistle. Facing a 7-point deficit for the second half a strong third quarter was needed and with Sam O’Connor, Cillian Sheehan and Klye Fleming now dominating around the middle, scoring opportunities opened up and points from Cillian Sheehan and Dylan McCarthy followed before we hit our own purple patch scoring 3 goals in a 10-minute spell, 2 from the boot of Kyle Fleming and 1 from Sam O’Connor. Dylan McCarthy followed up with a fine 2 pointer from play, and we led by 4 entering the closing stages. Rathmore came in search of a 4th goal but had to settle for 2 points as our backs held out despite huge pressure in the closing moments of the game. It was a fantastic win for a great group of players who have been very committed to training and games since January and was just reward for all their hard work all year. Thanks to Gneeveguilla GAA Club for the use of their grounds, Rathmore for a fine sporting game, referee Evan Horan and the East Kerry board for their co-operation in recent weeks. Thanks also to all of our supporters who were out in big numbers at the game. KILCUMMIN GAA LOTTO: There was no winner of our lotto on Monday 21st

Killarney Salmon & Trout Angling Club COMPETITIONS: This Sunday the 04th of October see's the hosting of our final senior competition for the season, The Tom Bambury Memorial Competition. This competition is ran as a fundraiser for the wonderful St. Francis School in Beaufort, to support the great work being done there by their dedicated staff. We would love to see a big turnout of members for this event, to recognize the great service provided by the school and to support them in their endeavours. Entry fee is E20 per member and competition ran on a pick your partner basis. Boats leaving shore at 1030 and all ashore for 5.30pm, weigh in directly afterwards at the shed in Ross. All the entry fees raised go direct to the school. Following on from having Club Member Liam Buckley fishing for Munster in the TAFI interprovincial competition last weekend and achieving 19th place overall, we were delighted to have yet another member competing at high level in the sport and on home waters again as well! Tom Dennehy, representing Ireland, was taking part in the TAFI 5
