Trial by social media
In the modern digital age, speed often trumps accuracy on social media. | By Sean Moriarty We live in an era where anyone with a smartphone can publish a headline, and anyone with a keyboard can render a verdict. But as recent events in our town have shown, trial by social media is a dangerous path that damages lives before the truth even has a chance to surface. On Sunday night, September 13, a serious incident occurred at Minish, Killarney, shortly before 10pm. Gardaí were called to the scene. For the motorists involved, it was undoubtedly a frightening and unsettling experience. Within a short time, however, posts began appearing across local social media channels. Before long, these posts provoked a wave of speculation, commentary, and condemnation from individuals who had no idea what was actually taking place. The original posts have since been deleted, but the online commentary had
already done its work. What the commentators online did not know, and what they made no attempt to check, was the full reality behind the headlines. As a trusted news source, the Killarney Advertiser carries out strict cross-checks with official channels before printing any report. Through those checks, we established that this incident involved a vulnerable individual. The person was taken to safety by Gardaí and assessed by medical professionals. No injuries occurred, and no offences were committed. This is precisely why care and restraint are essential. Traditional news outlets like the Killarney Advertiser verify facts, speak to authorities, and protect vulnerable people before publishing. Social media algorithms, by contrast, thrive on outrage, reaction, and snap judgments.
Healy-Rae calls for discussion following Dublin attack Independent TD Michael HealyRae is back in Kerry following an assault in Dublin on Wednesday afternoon, calling for a "robust conversation on toxicity" directed towards public representatives. ENFORCEMENT: The level crossing in Farranfore, where new automated GoSafe speed cameras will go live on Wednesday, September 30. Photo: David Dixon.
GoSafe cameras live at Farranfore level crossing on September 30 Automated speed cameras at the Farranfore rail level crossing will become fully operational next Wednesday, September 30, as part of a national push to improve safety at railway intersections. The GoSafe system at crossing XT 131 will monitor passing traffic and automatically log speed violations. Under the enforcement rules, motorists caught exceeding the speed limit through the crossing face an automatic €160 fine and three penalty points. Drivers who break the red warning lights face an €80 fine and three pen-
alty points. The installation follows an initial announcement in June by Iarnród Éireann, An Garda Síochána, and the Road Safety Authority to mark International Level Crossing Awareness Day. The automated infrastructure was previously piloted at the Merrion Gates in Dublin to deter dangerous driving and protect rail barriers. A similar camera system planned for the Minish level crossing outside Killarney is expected to go live shortly after the Farranfore setup is up and running.
Gardaí confirmed that officers from Kevin Street responded to an incident on Cork Street shortly after 4pm on September 16. A male motorist in his late 50s was approached and assaulted by a lone male while stopped in traffic. The Kerry deputy was taken to Kevin Street Station and subsequently treated at St Vincent’s Hospital. His injuries were confirmed as non-life-threatening. Following the incident, Deputy HealyRae thanked emergency services, hospital staff, and well-wishers across the country. "Whatever the intention behind this attack, I will not be deterred from continuing my work or from representing the people of Kerry to the very best of my ability," Healy-Rae stated. "However, we do need to have a serious conversation about the growing toxicity
directed towards politicians and public representatives. Disagreement and robust political debate are entirely legitimate, but personal abuse, intimidation and violence can never be accepted or normalised in a democratic society." He added: "I’m back in Kerry, I look forward to getting back to work in the coming days and trust the Gardaí will find the perpetrator and bring him to justice." Gardaí have arrested an individual in relation to the incident. Investigations are ongoing.

Speed surveys planned for Killarney estates Kerry County Council has agreed to conduct speed surveys and directly engage with residents in Marian's Terrace and Dalton's Avenue to address growing traffic safety concerns in the residential areas. The commitment follows a motion brought forward by Councillor Maura Healy-Rae at the September meeting of the Killarney Municipal District. Highlighting the difficulties faced by householders due to the layout of the estates, Cllr Healy-Rae asked the council to consult with local families to find a workable traffic management solution. "With the presence of two entrances/
exits, there is significant additional traffic coming through the estates; residents want to maintain both entrances/exits but are seeking additional traffic calming measures to increase safety for all," Cllr Healy-Rae stated. In response to the motion, local authority officials confirmed that initial data gathering will begin shortly to help formulate future safety measures for the area. A spokesperson for Kerry County Council replied: "Kerry County Council will engage with the residents of Marian's Terrace and Dalton's Avenue. To assist and inform this process, Kerry County Council will also carry out a number of speed surveys at this location in the interim."
Uisce Éireann urged to fast-track wastewater upgrade Uisce Éireann is being urged to fast-track a major upgrade of the Killarney Wastewater Treatment Plant on Ross Road after Environmental Protection Agency findings confirmed the facility requires urgent improvement. The issue was raised by Councillor John O’Donoghue at the September meeting of the Killarney Municipal District, where he called on the state utility to outline a clear timeframe for the necessary works. First constructed in 1972 and last extended in 1998, the Ross Road plant serves a population equivalent of over 41,000 people. It operates near capacity and discharges directly into the Lough Leane catchment via the Folly Stream. Cllr O’Donoghue warned that any potential failure at the site would cause irreparable damage to the local environment and cripple the town's economy. "I have been persistently highlighting my concerns about the Ross Road plant, so I had mixed emotions when my fears were confirmed by the EPA," Cllr O’Donoghue said. "Given its proximity to the Lakes of Killarney, this needs to be made a matter of absolute urgency." He cautioned that a lack of treatment
capacity poses a direct threat to town development and the tourist trade. "Any form of malfunction would prove disastrous from an environmental point of view, and housing development in the town would grind to an immediate halt. Our housing system is already broken with prices barring all but the very wealthy, and a freeze on building will only make matters worse." Comparing the situation to ecological disasters elsewhere, Cllr O’Donoghue pointed to Lough Neagh as a stark warning of how quickly major lakes can suffer from severe pollution. "The Lakes of Killarney are the jewel in our crown. The impact of a failure on tourism would be catastrophic. We need to demand immediate action and a clear schedule of works from Uisce Éireann." Council members supported the motion to formally write to Uisce Éireann seeking an urgent update.
Killarney Active Retirement returns for new season Killarney Active Retirement Association has officially launched its new season, offering a full programme of events and social activities for local retirees.

Weekly gatherings take place every Friday afternoon from 2pm to 4pm at the KDYS Centre, located next to the Friary, offering members tea, coffee, and treats. The group highlighted the local Anseo Bus service as a convenient transport option for attendees, offering direct pick-up and drop-off access to the venue.

Frustration over morning gridlock at Coolcorcoran Mounting traffic gridlock at the Coolcorcoran junction onto the N22 Killarney Bypass is causing daily delays for commuters, with local motorists calling on Killarney Municipal District and elected representatives to take immediate action.
Local environmental group calls to protect Biosphere Reserve
Early morning traffic coming from the Tralee side has become severely backed up past BG Motors during the peak 8.15am commute. Motorists attempting to enter the bypass from the Coolcorcoran side face long queues and increasing frustration as they struggle to join the main road. Local drivers point to a specific design issue at the exit, where a raised kerb and a section of unused footpath prevent left-turning vehicles from merging
smoothly into the traffic flow. Road users are requesting a simple layout modification to resolve the bottleneck: converting the exit to left-turn only, removing the kerb obstruction, and directing driver traffic to loop via a U-turn at the Killarney Sports and Leisure Centre roundabout. Similar left-turn measures were previously implemented at the nearby Lewis Road junction to improve safety and traffic flow. The request comes as broader plans for the N22 bypass upgrade and new link road infrastructure remain under progression by Kerry County Council and Transport Infrastructure Ireland. Motorists wishing to share their views on local road issues can email info@ killarneyadvertiser.ie.
Local environmental group Lochanna Beo is calling on residents across Killarney and its surrounding parishes to take an active role in protecting the natural heritage of the Kerry Biosphere Reserve.
The UNESCO designation, which originally covered only Killarney National Park, was expanded in 2017 to incorporate a 65,000-hectare area comprising core, buffer, and transition zones across South Kerry. Despite past controversy surrounding local authority support for the designation, joint management between Kerry County Council, the National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS), and the South Kerry Development Partnership (SKDP) was formally renewed in 2020. Lochanna Beo is highlighting the commitments made in Chapter 11 of the Kerry County Development Plan, urging the public to hold statutory bodies accountable on key environmental pledges. These commitments include strict
measures to limit the spread of invasive species by controlling soil movement along watercourses, creating ecological corridors for wildlife, and enforcing habitat mapping for all future development proposals. Group representatives stressed that while these policy commitments exist on paper, effective conservation requires an informed and engaged local community to monitor and protect biodiversity across the Killarney Municipal District. Residents looking to report environmental concerns or learn more about local conservation efforts can contact the Kerry Biosphere Officer on 087 152 7746 or the Killarney National Park duty ranger on 064 663 5215.

Exploring the National Park after dark
Killarney Parish marked the annual Season of Creation by teaming up with the Killarney National Park Education Centre for an after-dark nature event in the park.
Led by newly appointed Parish Administrator Fr Pat O’Donnell, the local community group took part in a Nocturnal Nature Ramble organised in conjunction with European Youth in Parks Day and its 'Parks in the Dark' initiative. Education Centre staff Chris Barron and Tara Buckley guided participants through the park to observe wildlife that becomes active after dusk. Using bat detectors and night-vision binoculars, the group tracked local nocturnal species and learned about the nighttime ecosystem within the park grounds.

Calls grow for return of night Celtic FC to mark 50 years classes at Community College with gala night celebration A formal request is to be sent to Kerry Education and Training Board (ETB) asking for the potential resumption of night classes at Killarney Community College. The proposal was put forward by Councillor John O’Donoghue at the recent meeting of the Killarney Municipal District. Reflecting on the historical importance of the programmes, Cllr O’Donoghue said that the evening courses were long considered a cornerstone of community life in Killarney, particularly throughout the winter months.
"A wide variety of classes were provided, offering very practical training in areas such as cooking and typing," Cllr O’Donoghue noted. "They were very popular, and while I am not familiar with the reason behind them ceasing, I feel the possibility of them being restored should be explored." Beyond the practical educational benefits, local representatives highlighted that the classes served as a crucial social outlet for many residents across the town, including retirees. If you are running a night class please let us know via: info@killarneyadvertiser.ie.
Killarney Celtic FC will host a 50th Anniversary Gala Dinner on Saturday, November 7, at the Killarney Avenue Hotel to celebrate five decades of football in the town. Doors open at 7.30pm for the event, which will bring together past and present players, managers, volunteers, and supporters. Tickets cost €50 per person or €500 for a table of ten, with attendance capped at 280 guests. Live music on the night will be provided by local band Truly Diverse, followed by a DJ. Established in 1976, the club has grown from modest local beginnings to its home
ground at Celtic Park. The anniversary year comes as Killarney Celtic takes another step forward on the pitch, entering a new era with its debut campaign in the FAI National League. Organisers say the gathering offers a chance to honour founding members, acknowledge current coaches and volunteers, and remember deceased former members who helped build the club over the past half-century. Tickets for the over-18s event can be booked directly through club officers Mary Lyne on 086 648 5809 or Angela on 085 115 6832.

Innisfallen Golf Society launches anniversary booklet Members past and present of the Innisfallen Golf Society gathered at the Arbutus Hotel on Thursday night last to mark a major milestone with the official launch of a special celebratory booklet.
€150,000 granted to draft masterplan for St Finan’s site
Penned by local author Pat Gill, Annals of Innisfallen Golf Society documents the society's 31-year history, capturing decades of sporting camaraderie and local memories. The evening featured key addresses from guest speakers, including Kerry’s Eye journalist Aidan O'Connor and Councillor John O’Donoghue, who officially launched the publication before a packed room of supporters. The celebratory event also included a raffle and brought together decades of membership to reflect on the society's enduring role in Killarney's sporting community. Society members expressed sincere gratitude to all who contributed to compiling the booklet and supported the launch night, noting that new members are welcome to join the society for the season ahead.
Kerry County Council has been awarded €150,000 in government funding to progress a Masterplan and Infrastructure Delivery Plan for the St Finan’s Hospital landbank. The money forms part of a broader regeneration package announced by the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage under Category 1A of the Towns and Cities Regeneration Investment Fund, which targets longerterm projects for delivery in the later years of the National Development Plan. The funding will allow Kerry County Council to establish a long-term development roadmap for the 30-acre stateowned property, which has remained largely vacant since the psychiatric hospital closed its doors in 2012. The masterplan will evaluate access roads, water capacity, and core utility infrastructure needed to unlock the site. It will also establish a formal framework between Kerry County Council, the HSE as property owners, and the Land Development Agency to prepare the location for future statutory consents and funding applications. Research into the site shows the property is divided into distinct challenges. Land Development Agency reports identified
the overall campus as public land capable of delivering between 330 and 460 affordable homes on surrounding open ground at an estimated cost of up to €174 million. However, the main Victorian building is a protected structure. Upgrading or converting the historic facility alone is estimated to cost upwards of €100 million. Because of these high refurbishment costs, recent state assessments proposed splitting the site, with the Land Development Agency focusing on developing 6.6 hectares of open land while leaving the HSE to find alternative uses for the main hospital building. The HSE has previously expressed a preference to dispose of the entire campus as a single unit. The new €150,000 allocation will directly fund the technical, design, and structural assessments required to align these state bodies and clear a path for future housing and community infrastructure on the site.

Retailers join campaign to safeguard jobs Retailers and shop staff across Killarney joined forces this week as part of the nationwide '#CutPRSIKeepJobs' campaign, calling on the Government to reduce employers' PRSI contributions in Budget 2027 to protect local employment. Organised by Retail Excellence Ireland (REI), the campaign saw shop owners and employees stand together to highlight the severe financial pressures facing town centre businesses. The industry body is urging the Government to introduce an employer PRSI band of 8% on the first €36,000 of every wage, zero employer PRSI for workers
under 25, and a review of the methodology used to calculate the living wage. The push comes amid growing concern over rising operational expenses, with new figures showing a loss of 10,800 retail jobs nationally over the past year and a 35% surge in retail insolvencies in the first half of 2026 alone. Jean McCabe, Chief Executive Officer of
Retail Excellence Ireland, warned that mounting wage costs are placing unprecedented strain on independent traders across Kerry. "The retail industry has been under the most intense pressure from a range of cost pressures in recent times – and wage costs are the primary issue," Ms McCabe said. "The industry is now seeing a rapid increase in insolvencies because of these pressures, so Government must now act unless it wants to see more businesses fail. Retailers standing together today shows just how widely this is being felt, in
towns right across the country." Ms McCabe added that incoming PRSI rate increases scheduled for October 1 will deliver another major blow to small and medium enterprises unless urgent intervention is taken in the upcoming budget. "We’re asking every TD, in every constituency, to back this ask," Ms McCabe added. "And we’re asking Tánaiste Simon Harris, as Minister for Finance, to introduce it directly in Budget 2027. It’s costed, it’s modest, and it keeps jobs in local communities."
Marathon run to honour memory of beloved teacher Sarah Egan A local man is taking on the Dublin City Marathon to raise funds for cancer research in memory of his sister-in-law, who passed away earlier this year. David 'Daithí' Casey will run the 26.2-mile course in honour of Sarah Egan, a popular local teacher who lost her battle with Ewing Sarcoma in May. Known affectionately to her family and friends as Suzie, Sarah was a cherished daughter, sister, aunt, godmother, and friend.
Paying tribute to her memory, David remembered Sarah as a exceptionally kind and brave person who faced her illness with immense strength. "Suzie was a kind, caring, shy, and beautiful person," David said. "When she got sick, she showed amazing inner strength and was a brave fighter, especially in how she handled her illness in front of her family and her nieces and nephews." All funds raised from the run will go directly to Sarcoma Cancer Ireland to support ongoing research and treatment developments for Ewing Sarcoma, as well as
providing assistance to affected families. "Every mile I run is a reminder of why I’m doing this — to make a real difference for those who need it most," David added. "It’s not just about crossing a finish line; it’s about turning effort into impact." The Egan and Casey families extended their sincere thanks to the local community for their support and kindness over the past three months. The update came in response to a motion brought forward in May by Councillor John O’Donoghue, who urged the local authority to invite the Government to utilise Killarney’s extensive hospitality infrastructure for an EU ministerial meeting or leaders' summit. Highlighting the town's track record, Cllr O’Donoghue stated that Killarney was uniquely positioned to handle major international events on any scale and called on the region to capitalise on the national
presidency. However, a response from the Private Secretary to the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Helen McEntee TD, read out at the latest Killarney Municipal District meeting, confirmed that planning for informal ministerial gatherings is now complete. The Department confirmed that while County Kerry will feature in the national schedule, the high-profile informal meeting of Equality Ministers has been allocated to Munster Technological University in Tralee instead. "We are regrettably not in a position to consider additional venues for ministerial meetings at this time," the Department reply stated, though local representatives were encouraged to engage through official Presidency Associated Events and County Pairings initiatives.
Killarney and its surrounding district were well represented at the 95th National Ploughing Championships in Screggan, Co. Offaly, this week. Members of the Killarney Valley Classic and Vintage Club turned out in force on Wednesday to support the event, while local competitor Ryan Wharton took to the fields. Competition results were not yet finalised as the Killarney Advertiser went to press on Thursday evening, with a full event roundup to follow next week. Local hospitality businesses also made their presence felt at Europe's largest outdoor exhibition. Representatives
from the Gleneagle Group and Hotel Killarney were among the local trade exhibitors showcasing the town's tourism offering to massive crowds throughout the three-day event. Organisers reported huge daily attendances across the site, with 77,000 visitors streaming through the gates on Tuesday's opening day and a further 91,000 attending on Wednesday. Similar crowds were expected for Thursday's final day of competition.
European mixology elite heading to Pig’s Lane Fresh off being named Ireland’s Bar of the Year 2026, Pig’s Lane is set to host world-renowned Athens cocktail destination The Bar in Front of The Bar for an exclusive pop-up event, The one-off takeover takes place on Wednesday, September 23, from 7pm in the underground town centre venue. Ranked No. 2 in Europe’s 50 Best Bars and No. 47 in The World’s 50 Best Bars, the Greek street-side team will collaborate with Pig's Lane mixologists to showcase zero-waste techniques, advanced carbonation, and precision sub-zero serving methods. Among the featured drinks on the night will be the signature C.R.E.A.M. cocktail, a blend of Greek herbs, mastic, and spirits served with a warm white chocolate and
coconut float. The event, sponsored by Hennessy, highlights a joint focus on sustainability between both venues, combining ingredients from Killarney Urban Farm's hydroponic towers with the zero-waste, closed-loop approach developed in Athens.

PAINT LIKE A PRO:
COLOUR DRENCHING EXPLAINED BY CRAIG
| By Craig Locke
Manager, Pat McDonnell Paints – Tralee
Colour drenching is more versatile than its dramatic name suggests. Put simply, it means carrying one colour across the surfaces of a room: the walls, ceiling, skirting boards and doors. Why Does It Work? Most schemes contrast coloured walls with white ceilings and woodwork. Colour drenching removes these contrasting lines. This can make a small space feel more expansive, while giving rooms a cohesive atmosphere.
Choosing Your Colour Consider how you want the room to feel. Soft neutrals and pastels create a gentle, airy effect, while deep blues, greens and earthy shades can feel intimate and cocooning. Look at what will remain in the room: flooring, furniture, fabrics and materials. Your chosen colour should complement these elements or provide intentional contrast. Light also matters, as the same shade can appear different in a bright, north-facing or artificially lit space. Test shortlisted shades on card or lining paper. View them throughout the day before deciding. Our tester pots are 25% off, making this an ideal opportunity to properly explore a few options. One Colour, One Finish For the most seamless interpretation, some people prefer the same colour and finish across every surface. Farrow & Ball Dead Flat makes this straightforward. This ultra-matt, multi-surface finish can
be used on walls, ceilings, woodwork and metal, creating an uninterrupted wash of colour without changing products from surface to surface. Better still, our Tralee store now has its own Farrow & Ball tinting machine, so your chosen colour and finish can be mixed in store while you wait. One Colour, Different Finishes Colour drenching can also mean maintaining one colour while varying the sheen. This adds subtle depth while suiting each surface. Ralston offers an excellent route to this effect because the same colour can be mixed across complementary wall and trim paints. For a soft scheme, pair Ralston ExtraTex Matt on walls and ceilings with Ralston Aqua Matt/ Semi-matt/ Satin on woodwork. The difference in sheen allows doors and skirting boards to catch the light while the colour remains consistent. Our team can explain the options and
recommend the right preparation and primer for each area. Start Small or Go Bold If you are unsure about drenching a living room or bedroom, why not try a small bathroom or utility room. These spaces are ideal for experimenting with a stronger shade. Alternatively, try tonal colour drenching, using closely related shades from the same colour family across the walls, woodwork and ceiling. Whichever approach you choose, preparation remains essential. Clean surfaces thoroughly, fill and sand imperfections, and prime where required. If choosing one colour for an entire room feels daunting, bring photographs and samples into your Pat McDonnell Paints store or book a consultation with one of our colour experts. Bring your ideas to us, and we’ll help you choose the right colour and finishes to transform your room with confidence.

New temporary entrance added to Dunloe Hotel Motorists travelling along the L4040 in Beaufort are being advised to exercise caution in the coming weeks following changes to the road layout at The Dunloe Hotel & Gardens. A temporary site entrance and new tarmacadam surface have been installed on the L4040 to manage traffic during ongoing construction work at the hotel. Temporary site hoarding, entrance gates,
and a mobile site cabin are now in place to allow heavy machinery and construction vehicles safe access to the grounds as redevelopment progresses. The temporary road layout will remain active for the duration of the multi-phase hotel upgrade works. Once construction is fully completed, developers will remove the temporary entrance and return the hotel entrance configuration to its original layout.
Update on expected opening of Minor Injury Unit due shortly An update regarding the opening timeline for Killarney's long-awaited Minor Injury Unit is expected this week following a formal query submitted to health authorities. Councillor Marie Moloney raised the issue ahead of the Regional Health Forum South West meeting, which took place in Cork County Hall on Thursday, September 17. With the transfer of residents and patients now underway to the newly opened Community Nursing Unit at Bal-
lydribbeen, Cllr Moloney asked health officials when operations will commence at the Minor Injury Unit. The planned facility is set to be housed at the former St Columbanus’s Home on Rock Road, taking over the space vacated by the transfer of patients to the new nursing home. The update was delivered after the Killarney Advertiser went to press this week. Full details of the HSE's official response and target opening dates will feature in next week's edition.

Sham Courtney marks 'eighty-something' birthday High Street was extra busy on Wednesday night as one of Killarney’s overall favourite characters held court for his latest milestone. Seamus ‘Sham’ Courtney, from Loughquittane in Muckross, brought friends, neighbours, and regulars together at Jack C’s Bar for his annual birthday gathering. The retired farmer, renowned for his sharp wit and legendary social calendar, ensured the midweek occasion was cel-
ebrated in proper fashion. Staff decorated his preferred town-centre haunt with balloons as well-wishers gathered to raise a glass to the Loughquittane legend. While Sham remained delightfully vague on the exact number of candles involved this year, hinting only that he is comfortably into his eighties, the turnout and high spirits proved Killarney's most famous storyteller is as central to the town's social life as ever.

A WEEKLY ROUND-UP OF NEWS • VIEWS FROM KERRY AND AROUND THE WORLD
INSPIRED BY DANNY CASEY
Australia cracking down on working holiday visas Australia has announced strict measures to reduce the number of people entering the country on a Working Holiday Visa and on student visas. The news was announced by Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke this week. The changes are expected to affect young people travelling to Australia under the Working Holiday Maker programme, which allows eligible visitors to live and work in the country while travelling. The new restrictions will introduce a ballot system for people seeking a second and third Working
Holiday visa meaning eligible applicants will have to be selected before extending their stay. Only 45,000 will be eligible for a second-year visa while only 5,000 will qualify for a third-year visa. Last year, 31,000 people extended their WHV for a third year. Student visa holders will not be allowed to bring their family with them under the new measures. The Government says the changes are designed to better manage migration levels and ensure the programme supports Australia’s regional
workforce needs. Processing times for Working Holiday Maker applications are also expected to be stabilised at around three months. The reforms will be introduced progressively over the next 12 months. The scheme has long been popular with young Irish people, with thousands travelling to Australia each year in search of employment and the opportunity to experience life abroad. The move comes amid growing pressure on Australia’s housing market, rental sector and public services. The news will affect thousands of backpackers who travel to Australia every year.
Kerry to be centre stage of US talk show The American talk show TODAY will travel to Kerry next month to showcase our beautiful county on US television. The popular programme is expected to highlight some of the county’s most wellknown attractions, scenery and tourism offerings as part of a special feature on Ireland. NBC’s TODAY show will broadcast all four hours live from Sheen Falls Lodge in Kenmare, County Kerry, on Friday, October 16, 2026. It will be the first time the popular American morning programme has broadcast all four hours live from Ireland, bringing the country’s scenery, culture and heritage to millions of viewers. Presenters including Savannah Guthrie, Craig Melvin and Al Roker will travel to Ireland for the special broadcast, alongside other TODAY hosts and NBC News Chief International Correspondent Keir Simmons. The programme is sponsored by Tourism Ireland, with Sheen Falls Lodge providing accommodation for the visiting team. Viewers across the US will get the chance to see Kerry from a new perspective when the programme airs next month.
Big news for Oasis fans Oasis have ended months of speculation by announcing two gigs at Slane Castle in 2027. The band’s Oasis Live ’27 tour will feature 38 concerts across Scotland, England, Germany, Spain, the Netherlands, France, Italy, the US and Ireland. The Gallagher brothers will perform at Slane Castle on September 4 and 5, subject to licence, with former The Verve frontman Richard Ashcroft confirmed as special guest at every show. The announcement follows the huge success of the band’s Oasis Live ’25 comeback tour, which marked their return to the stage
after years apart. Demand for tickets is expected to be extremely high. Irish fans had to register by yesterday for a chance to receive a unique code allowing them to access a ticket sale window. There will be no general public sale, with Irish tickets going on sale across September 25, 26 and 27. Ticket prices will range from €181.25 to €501.25, including booking fees, with a maximum of four tickets available per person. The announcement is expected to generate huge excitement among Irish Oasis fans, many of whom missed the band’s previous tour dates.

September Listowel Racing Festival returns The 168th Listowel Harvest Racing Festival will return to North Kerry from Sunday, September 20, to Saturday, September 26, bringing seven days of racing, fashion, music and family entertainment to the town.
Irish artists drop out of Ed Sheeran's tour Irish artists Aaron Rowe and Beoga have dropped out of Ed Sheeran’s North American tour in solidarity with rapper Macklemore.
The American rapper was removed from the tour after making comments in support of Palestine. Dublin singer-songwriter Aaron Rowe announced his departure in a post on Instagram. Rowe said the decision was not taken lightly and described Sheeran as someone who had changed his life. However, he said he could not continue with the tour following Macklemore’s removal. In his statement, he wrote: “As Irish people, we know all too well about genocide, forced famine and violent occupation.” He also criticised the use of financial power to influence who
The popular festival is one of the longest-established racing meetings in Ireland and attracts thousands of visitors each year. The week will get underway with Kinisla Family Day on Sunday, featuring face painting, balloon giveaways, bouncing castles, a mini disco, alpacas and appearances from popular cartoon characters. Alfie the Alien is also expected to make a special appearance. The festival will reach its highlight on Wednesday, September 23, with the
€200,000 Guinness Kerry National Handicap Steeplechase. The prestigious race has previously been won by notable horses including Flooring Porter in 2024 and Spanish Harlem in 2025. Fashion will also feature prominently throughout the week, with the Ryle Menswear Best Dressed Man competition taking place on Thursday and McElligotts Kia Ladies Day on Friday. Ladies Day will offer a range of prizes, including a holiday for two in Sorrento. The festival will conclude on Saturday with the Sustainable Style Competition, celebrating sustainable and pre-loved fashion. Music and entertainment will take place throughout the week, while TG4 will broadcast live from the races from Monday to Saturday. General admission starts at €20, with tickets available online.
could speak publicly about the conflict, saying he would lose respect for himself if he continued with the tour “as normal”. Rowe ended his statement by declaring his support for Palestine. Irish traditional band Beoga, who have worked with Sheeran for more than a decade and feature on his hit song 'Galway Girl', have also quit the tour. The band said their decision followed what they described as the “silencing of Macklemore”. Ed Sheeran has since said that Macklemore’s removal was the decision of the tour’s promoter and was not his own decision. Other supporting acts, including Finneas and Danish band Lukas Graham, have also announced that they are withdrawing from the tour in solidarity with Macklemore.
Inspiring short film to premiere in Tralee next week A young Kerry man who progressed through the Bronze, Silver and Gold Gaisce Awards will feature in a new short film premiering in Tralee this month. Ciarán – A Pal’s Voice will be screened at Inspired Day Service, Brandon Court, Basin Road, Tralee, at 12 noon on Thursday, September 24. The film follows Ciarán Sears and his Gaisce journey, which has helped him build confidence, independence and a belief that challenges can be overcome. Having completed his own awards, Ciarán is now a Gaisce President’s Award Leader (PAL), supporting other young people as they begin their own Gaisce journeys. The film explores the impact of Gaisce on young people in Kerry, focusing on
confidence, participation and inclusion, while also following new participants taking their first steps in the programme with Ciarán’s support. The project was developed by Kerry Education and Training Board’s Local Creative Youth Partnership in partnership with Inspired Day Service. Kerry filmmaker Seán Rea worked with Ciarán over 12 weeks to develop the film and explore the experiences that have shaped his journey. Creative Youth Coordinator Deirdre Enright said the film places Ciarán’s voice and creativity at the centre of the story. Inspired Day Service CEO Liz Maher said the organisation was “incredibly proud” of Ciarán and his achievements. The film will be submitted to the Fresh Film Festival in January 2027 and will later be available on YouTube.

members with rally, endurance trial, and autotest cars to bring their vehicles along for the static display to showcase local motorsport talent. Participating cars must arrive at the venue by 10am and will remain on display under marshal supervision until 4pm. Speaking ahead of the event, KDMC Club Secretary Laura Healy invited members to get involved to support the community gathering. "Your involvement would really help make Club Day a success. If you can bring your car, please let me know," Healy said. Members willing to display their cars or volunteer on the day are asked to contact club officers directly ahead of Saturday morning.

Imported used cars increased by 36% in August this year The Society of the Irish Motor Industry (SIMI) released its official 262 new vehicle registration statistics for August. While new car registrations were up by 3% on August 2025 the figures for imported used cars was running at a 36% increase. In other categories Light Commercial Vehicles (LCVs) decreased by 10% compared to August last year. Year to date, LCVs are up 7%.
In August, 2,265 new electric cars (battery electric cars) were registered, which was a 7% increase from the 2,115 registrations in August 2025. So far this year, 32,079 new electric cars have been registered, representing a 55% increase compared to the same period in 2025, when 20,642 electric cars were registered.
In the new car market share by engine type, Battery Electric cars lead market position with 26.3%, followed by Hybrid (Petrol Electric) 24.14%, Petrol 20.09%, Plug-In Hybrid 14.85%, and Diesel 12.56%. In the Kerry region new car registrations are up 9.6% January to end August while new electric car registrations are up 78% for the same period.

Kerry motorists warned of higher insurance costs More than 14,000 Kerry motorists could face higher car insurance premiums after accumulating penalty points on their driving licences.
IPRA calls for fairer fuel taxes and action on retail crime The Irish Petrol Retailers Association (IPRA) has called for urgent Government action to support independent forecourts, consumers and rural communities ahead of Budget 2027. The association has submitted four key proposals to Minister for Finance Simon Harris TD, focusing on fuel theft, commercial rates, fuel duty and retail crime. IPRA is seeking a duty refund mechanism for fuel stolen during drive-offs, subject to Garda reporting and Revenue verification. The association says some independent forecourts lose up to €5,000 annually through fuel theft, while others report losses of up to €40,000. It is also calling for reform of the commercial rates system, arguing that independent forecourts face a disproportionate burden because valuations are largely linked to turnover and fuel sales despite
operating on lower margins than major retailers. The association is further calling for planned fuel duty increases to be paused pending a comprehensive review in 2027. Temporary excise reductions are due to be restored in stages between November 2026 and February 2027, increasing fuel costs for motorists and businesses. IPRA is seeking a Government-stakeholder working group to examine the impact of fuel taxation on households, rural communities and small businesses. The association is also calling for stronger protection against retail crime, including direct restitution for victims, grants for security equipment such as CCTV and ANPR, and greater use of seized criminal assets to fund retail security. IPRA said independent operators need greater support to protect their businesses from repeated crime and rising costs.
According to insurance provider OUTsurance, 14,302 drivers in Kerry currently have three or more penalty points. The figures show that 10,913 Kerry motorists have exactly three points, while 34 have reached the 12-point threshold for mandatory disqualification. A further 24 drivers have 11 points, leaving them just one offence away from reaching the disqualification threshold. OUTsurance says motorists may not realise that penalty points can have financial consequences beyond the initial fine, as insurers can take driving
offences and penalty points into account when calculating premiums. The company said the number of drivers with penalty points nationally has increased by almost eight per cent, equivalent to around 40,000 drivers, over the past year. Speeding remains the most common reason for penalty points, accounting for around 65 per cent of active notices, according to OUTsurance. Mobile phone use is the next most prevalent offence. OUTsurance Chief Marketing Officer Ian Kennedy said the figures should encourage motorists to take greater care on the roads. He said the potential for higher insurance premiums could provide an additional deterrent to speeding and other dangerous driving behaviours.

NEWS
A weekly series from Killarney Advertiser's Jess Jukes
18.09.2026 Previously: Here on Dundag it was far easier to relax than anywhere else. They had a picnic blanket, some cold drinks and what felt like all the time in the world.
Too much had happened this summer to pack it all away. The only solace, Felicity thought, was that she had to go so that she could come back again.
“I can’t believe I leave on Monday” Felicity said tiredly. “Neither can I," said Jack. "This summer has flown. Tell me you have plans to come back sometime soon though? I don’t think Sheila and I can be as good of a mischief-making duo as me and you.” Felicity had already spoken with her parents about her return to Killarney. “I’d like to come back for Halloween. Who knows, with my apprenticeship you may be seeing a lot more of me.” Felicity glanced at Jack, who was looking far out over the lake. “That wouldn’t be so bad.” He paused. “There’s loads of things to do in Kerry around Halloween. There are countless events and festivals in the surrounding towns and parishes.” “That would be nice. I love Halloween, it would be great to see how ye do it down here.” A few years ago she and her friends had run a school scare event in Dublin, for TYs and above only. It had been some of the best fun they’d had in school together. “It’s going to be really strange not having you just around the corner anymore. I’ve gotten so used to showing up at Sheila’s and you being there.” Knowing that her friends were going to miss her so much made Felicity’s chest twist. She knew that Auntie Sheila wasn’t looking forward to her leaving either. “At least I’ll be back soon. You’ll be seeing me off of the train before you can blink.” “Yeah, I can’t wait.” A few hours passed before Felicity and Jack returned to Hedgerow Place. Jack dropped her off at the door, promising to meet her at the bus station tomorrow to see her off. Felicity trudged towards the door morosely. Auntie Sheila met her on the other side with a sad smile. “Hopefully you’ll be back soon poppet. I suppose for now you should probably pack.” Felicity nodded and made her way upstairs. She entered the spare room , her room now, really. Auntie Sheila had offered her it permanently if she were to get her apprenticeship. That would be a dream come true, to live in Killarney and have something as exciting as an apprenticeship to work on. Felicity packed slowly. She let herself daydream about what her life could look like, and how easy it would be to sink into it. Thoughts of coming back here, to a room that was fully hers circled around her head. Felicity looked around her room as she slowly progressed towards fitting her whole summer into just the two small suitcases and backpack that she had come to Killarney with. It felt like her experiences were too big, too meaningful to pack away with her.
Now she was standing once more at Killarney Bus Station, waiting to get the Expressway back to Cork before the next leg to Dublin. Auntie Sheila and Jack both stood nearby waiting to see her off. Felicity had spent the last few days packing, reminiscing on her time in Killarney as if it were years ago, and had not started a mere three months previously. The adventures she’d had and the friends she made were all so different from what she knew in Dublin. It almost felt like going back to the city was going back to a different world, a different life. “You have to stay in touch,” Jack said with a frown. “And I will hold you to your promise to come back at Halloween. We have to go to some of the Halloween events. I know it’s a trek down but it will be faster by train.” Felicity didn’t know why her parents had booked her a bus down and back and not the train, but she was almost thankful for the extra travel time on the way back. It would take all of it and more to acclimatise back into her old life. When the bus arrived, Jack helped her stow her luggage in the undercarriage. It was with a heavy heart and tearful eyes that she hugged them both goodbye. Felicity promised both to them and to herself that she would be back for Halloween, even if she didn’t get her apprenticeship, she would make the time around her college schedule to visit. God, she should have applied for college in Kerry. If only she had known what it was like when she was filling out her CAO. Felicity trudged up the steps onto the bus. She hadn’t missed how cramped the seats were. The train would undoubtedly be the better option for her return. She turned and waved at Jack and Auntie Sheila as the bus pulled out of its berth. She could see Auntie Sheila smiling up at her. Something her aunt had told her the night before swirled around in her head. “It doesn’t matter that you’re leaving now,” she had said, “because you’ve been to Killarney once, and now there will always be a home for you here.” Summer in Killarney had been transformative, to say the least. The bus went around the Daly’s roundabout and travelled down the hill towards Cork. Felicity looked longingly at the turn to Woodlawn Road as they trundled by. Killarney, and Auntie Sheila’s little house on Hedgerow Place, had snuck its way into her heart. Felicity was going to miss it. She couldn’t wait to come back again. Tune in next week to see what happens ...

Shane Burns Up Trump’s Doonbeg NICKY BARRY
I may be wrong about this, but I have this theory, That most golf professionals, dine different to Shane Lowry. With their little waist lines, they must live on fruit and nuts, Whereas Shane I fancy, loves his feed of spuds. When Shane is on the sofa, I suspect they are in gyms, Doing all those sit-ups, to look so fit and trim. When out socializing, I feel they drink sparkling water, Whereas the pride of Esker Hills, is more disposed to porter. But none of this stuff mattered, when they stood on tee 1, And the Amgen Irish Open, was there to be won. Having won the thing before, up in Louth’s Baltray, The big burly Offaly man, showed them all the way. He set a new course record, with a red hot putter, While poor ole Rory floundered, putting like a scrubber, But Shane had no such problem, for every long putt dropped, And his birdie on the last, was just him mopping up. He won it by eleven strokes, which was unprecedented, And picked up the trophy, from the US President. Trump came as a republican, and caused loyalists pain, But thrilled Sinn Fein’s Mary Lou, with A Nation Once Again!

Benedictus by John O’Donoghue (1956-2008) For Cornelius On the day when the weight deadens on your shoulders and you stumble, may the clay dance to balance you. And when your eyes freeze behind the grey window and the ghost of loss gets into you. may a flock of colours, indigo, red, green and azure blue, come to awaken in you a meadow of delight. When the canvas frays in the currach of thought and a stain of ocean blackens beneath you. May there come across the waters a path of yellow moonlight to bring you safely home. May the nourishment of the earth be yours, may the clarity of light be yours, may the fluency of the ocean be yours, may the protection of the ancestors be yours. And so may a slow wind work these words of love around you, an invisible cloak to mind your life. From your sisters and brothers Mary, Patrick, Margaret, Timothy, and their families.
MAY YOU ALWAYS HAVE AN ANGEL BY YOUR SIDE May you always have an angel by your side, watching out for you in all the things you do. Reminding you to keep believing in brighter days. Finding ways for your wishes and dreams to take you to beautiful places. Giving you hope that is as certain as the sun. Giving you the strength of serenity as your guide. May you always have love and comfort and courage. And may you always have an angel by your side.

KERRY INTERMEDIATE CLUB FINAL ______________________________________
Fossa 0 – 26 Kilcummin 0 – 22 FITZGERALD STADIUM
| By Eamonn Fitzgerald
No goals, but the normal 15 points from Fossa and Kerry superstar David Clifford, mostly engineered by older brother Paudie, who chipped in with 4 more points, was the main ingredient in this Kerry IFC final at Fitzgerald Stadium.
Former All-Ireland Junior Club champions Fossa have had their heartbreaks at Intermediate level, losing the 2023 and 2025 finals, but the inevitable win claims the title and promotion to senior level next season. Mind you, Fossa is not a one-man team, rather a two-man team where the others benefit from the rising tide propelled
Clifford kicks 0-15 as former novice champs reach Promised Land by the Cliffords lifting all boats. Fossa battled well against an impressive Kilcummin who started strongly, especially with two two-pointers by Paul O’Shea. They held a four-point advantage, soon whittled to 0-11 to 0-8, but just before half-time Paudie Clifford pounced for a two-pointer to leave Fossa trailing 0-10 to 0-12. Kilcummin led at half-time, aided by the breeze blowing down into the Lewis Road end of the Fitzgerald Stadium. They
worked hard for their scores only to be pegged back, usually by David Clifford’s two-pointers. They launched several attacks into the scoreboard end and were unlucky not to score at least one goal, a score they needed so badly. By the 50th minute, Kilcummin were just two points adrift, 21-19. Then they got closer, just a point behind. Then David Clifford scored his fifth two-pointer and finally the insurance single point for a four-point win. Kil-

cummin’s brave bid was valiant. Óigí Clifford held his father’s MOTM trophy, the garsún who has All-Ireland winners' ancestry from both the Cliffords and D O’Connor. As predicted last week if any team can manage to curtail the reality of the Clifford brothers scoring to 14 points, then victory will ensue. That’s a stark reminder for the opposition as Fossa march on to Munster and hopefully to Croker. Dreams and reality can be merged and realised.

Rathmore fancied in Kerry Club final | By Eamonn Fitzgerald Rathmore and Dr Crokes will meet in the Kerry Senior Club Championship final at Austin Stack Park, Tralee on Sunday. Throw-in will be at 3.30pm. For a preview of this local derby final, the performances in the respective semi-finals should provide an informed prediction. Rathmore were in devastating form at Johnny Culloty Park in last weekend’s semi-final, delivering a whopping 16-point win over an outclassed Milltown/ Castlemaine team (2-21 to 0-11). They dominated the first half, making every post a winner with the advantage of the breeze. They led 1-12 to 0-3 at half-time. Fionn Murphy was the goalscorer just before the break after great lead-up play by Alan Dineen, Mark Ryan and Darragh Nagle. Milltown/Castlemaine did rally in the second half but still trailed 1-15 to 0-6. Rathmore had the luxury of bringing on Brian Friel and Mark Reen to add further agony for the Mid Kerry side. In all 10, Rathmore players scored, with supersub-Mark Reen leading the way with 1-1. In the other semi-final played in Castleisland, Dr Crokes emerged as winners after a dramatic marathon which went to extra time. Brave Na Gaeil hung on despite be-
ing down to 14 men for part of ET. Two delightful two-pointers pegged back Crokes’ four-point lead, necessitating the penalty shootout. What a dreadful way to go out after such heroics. Kerry ‘keeper Shane Murphy became the hero, saving two penalties to secure passage to the final. Shootout result: Crokes 4-2 Na Gaeil. The return of Tony Brosnan from the injury he sustained the week before the All-Ireland final versus Mayo made a huge difference. Their most prolific scorer, true to form, showed the way, scoring 1-8, the goal coming in the first half of the 20-minute extra time. Indeed, Crokes were lucky to be level, thanks to an amazing but fortunate two-pointer by the inform Kerry and Crokes midfielder Mark O’Shea. Still Na Gaeil came back and made light of losing a player to a red card. Two magnificent two-pointers sent both teams to the

guillotine. On semi-final form, Rathmore deserve to be hot favourites to win. They lost the club final 14 years ago while Dr Crokes won it in 2024. Even without former Kerry goalkeeper and All-Star Shane Ryan, Rathmore have their other players back after they missed the County League campaign. Alan Dineen, Ciarán Collins, Darragh Nagle and Kerry veteran Paul Murphy who showed them the way with a two-pointer to open their scoring in the semi-final. Dr Crokes have scorer-in-chief Tony Brosnan with the constantly improving Cian McMahon and Micheál Burns as the main scoring options. Their midfield pairing of Mark O’Shea and Charlie Keating will need to dominate. In defence, Shane Murphy, team captain Evan Looney, Gavin White and Neil O’Shea will have their hands full with the powerful Rathmore forwards, especially their probable half-forward line of Fionn Murphy, Cathal Ryan and Darragh Nagle. PREDICTION: Rathmore.

The last time these sides met was on June 12 at Mounthawk, and Kerry comfortably won it thanks to a fifty-third minute winner by cult hero Ryan Perez via an incredible assist from Daniel Okwute. That was a massive game for The Kingdom and a big three points at the time. Athlone go into this game sitting seventh in the table having earned a valuable point against UCD following a 2-2 thriller last Friday. Kerry, meanwhile, are fifth having lost 0-1 at home to Bray Wanderers, a result which ended a remarkable 12-game unbeaten run at home.
If Kerry can secure three points and get a favour from Wexford FC against Cobh Ramblers, they will have 43 points, drawing level with Cobh in fourth. Athlone can move up to fifth with a W – overtaking Kerry – so there is plenty at stake, particularly with just five matches remaining (tonight inclusive). Colin Healy has faced Athlone seven times in his reign as Kerry FC manager, winning three, drawing three, and only losing once. Athlone boss Seán O'Connor has never faced Kerry as in his current role having only been appointed on July 14. Healy is expected to name a strong squad, but he will be without Niall Brookwell due to suspension. Ryan Kelliher continues to recover from an ACL injury. It isn't all bad because according to Healy himself, Daniel Okwute has returned to training, and the Killarney man might be in contention to play some minutes tonight.
CELTIC PARK Early and late goals were the undoing of the hosts in this Group 3 encounter with CK United last Saturday. The Carlow/Kilkenny outfit opened the scoring after just seven minutes when Mamadou Doumbia headed home from a Dean Kelly corner. The away side doubled their advantage when Callum Warfield won the aerial duel to set CK on the attack and Dan McGrath finished to the net. Celtic were back in the game just after the half-hour mark when Kennedy Amechi finished smartly after good play down the left-hand side. Killarney Celtic 1-2 CK United at half-time. The visitors were dealt a blow shortly after the interval when they were reduced to 10 men and Celtic were back on level terms in the 51st minute thanks to Trpimir
Vrljicak who netted from close range. The game appeared to be heading for a draw but CK found a winner when a good ball up the right released Feo Adeogun whose cross into the area was turned in at the far post by David Imiren. The win leaves CK on six points, joint top of Group 3 of the National League alongside Villa with UCC in third on three points. Celtic and Newbridge are still seeking their first points of the campaign – and at least one of them are certain to do just that when they meet in Kildare this Saturday at 5pm.Elsewhere on Saturday, CK United host Villa at the SETU Campus in Carlow. Home Farm DCU lead the way in Group 1 of the newly formed league with Salthill Devon, TU Dublin and Letterkenny Rovers currently level at the top of Group 2.

RTÉ to pare down Ireland-Israel coverage – will you watch? | By Adam Moynihan RTÉ have announced that their coverage of the controversial Ireland v Israel matches in the UEFA Nations League will not feature Irish commentators or analysts. The move is not all that surprising. One of the company’s top pundits, Richie Sadlier, had publicly stated that he would refuse to participate in the broadcasts in protest at the ongoing genocide in Gaza. It’s unlikely that many of his colleagues would have been keen to attach their own personal brands to the spectacle either. That means Irish viewers who wish to watch the game on RTÉ will be doing so via an international feed. So, the government have made their decision: it’s up to the FAI. The FAI have made their decision: the games will be played. RTÉ have made their decision: the games will be shown, but without commentary. The two remaining stakeholders must decide next week how they’ll handle the situation: the players and the fans. As of this week, there hasn’t been any
clear indication that any or all of the players will opt out of the matches, which take place next Sunday and the following Sunday in Hungary and Serbia respectively. They find themselves in a hard place. The vague threat of sanctions hangs over their heads. At the same time, even from within their professional football bubble, they should be well aware of what Isreal is doing to Palestine, and perhaps even more aware of where the Irish public’s loyalties lie. Choosing to boycott the fixtures would make them heroes in many people’s eyes,
not just in Ireland but all over the world. It would also be a major blow to Israel’s PR machine. Sport and the arts are important avenues for evil regimes to wash themselves clean of the crimes they commit. A lack of leadership at board level means it’s up to the Irish players to make that call and strike that blow. Is that fair? No. But that doesn’t mean they should be totally immune from scrutiny. Is losing six points in the Nations League a bigger deal than genocide? What about a fine? We, as fans, also have a decision to make. None of us can attend the games and
While it’s important to acknowledge that it is a difficult situation for the FAI, I think they’re making a grave mistake.
protest – the FAI have denied us that – but we can choose whether or not we watch the games on television. For those of us who follow the team passionately, it’s hard to ignore an Ireland match. Some will watch as normal. Others might find something else to do with their time. Much like the players, the supporters shouldn’t really be in this situation. These calls should have been taken out of their hands by UEFA, who should ban Israel, and the game’s governing body in this country, the FAI, who should refuse to play the Israeli team. While it’s important to acknowledge that it is a difficult situation for the FAI, in deciding to go ahead with these matches I think they’re making a grave mistake. The Irish people oppose genocide. The majority believe the fixtures against Israel should not be played, therefore the FAI are knowingly going against their wishes. When viewed in those terms, what they’re doing amounts to more than a mistake – it’s a betrayal. They have missed their opportunity to do the right thing. Will the players and the fans succeed where the suits have failed? TOGETHER: Republic of Ireland players huddle before the international friendly against Qatar in May. 58 Killorglin Rowing Club’s junior athletes enjoyed an outstanding day at the Swift Racing Coastal Junior Championships in Bantry on Sunday, returning home with five national titles, three silver medals and a series of strong performances across the J14, J16 and J18 categories. The results provided another significant championship success for the club, just weeks after Killorglin’s senior women completed a clean sweep of the three women’s titles at the Senior Coastal Championships in Wicklow. At J18 level, Noah Granville and Rory Barry got Killorglin’s day off to the perfect start, winning the Men’s J18 Double Scull in 10:28.8, four seconds clear of Kilmacsimon in second. There was further success in the Women’s J18 Double, where Killorglin took both first and fourth. Fia O’Gorman and Maria Murphy raced to the national title in 11:09.8, more than 30 seconds clear of the second-placed Loughros/Athlone combination, while Aisling O’Sullivan and Kate McMahon finished fourth. Murphy also produced a strong performance in the Women’s J18 Single Scull, taking silver in 12:00.9 behind Maeve McLoughlin, adding another championship medal to Killorglin’s tally. One of the standout individual performances of the day came from Freya Doyle, who claimed the Women’s J16 Single Scull title. Doyle crossed the line in 12:50.5 in a closely contested race, just 3.6 seconds ahead of second-placed L. Harrington. Killorglin’s strength in the bigger boats was also on display. Doyle, Aisling O’Sullivan, Mary O’Sullivan and Robyn O’Shea,

coxed by Celine Kavanagh, won the Women’s J16 Coxed Quad, finishing in 11:13.6 and 18.2 seconds clear of Castletownbere A. The club fielded two crews in the Women’s J16 Double final, with Aisling O’Sullivan and Mary OSullivan finishing fifth
and Natasha Donegan and Robyn O’Shea seventh. Doyle then stepped up an age category to join Kate McMahon, Fia O’Gorman and Maria Murphy in the Women’s J18 Coxed Quad. Coxed by Kavanagh, the crew delivered another commanding

performance, winning in 11:14.1 - almost 55 seconds ahead of second-placed Kilmacsimon. That victory gave Doyle an impressive three national titles on the day, across the J16 Single, J16 Quad and J18 Quad. Killorglin also came within seconds of adding another championship title in the Mixed J18 Coxed Quad. The crew of Fia O’Gorman, Noah Granville, Rory Barry and Maria Murphy, coxed by Kavanagh, finished second in 10:24.5, just 3.1 seconds behind the winning Loughros/Athlone combination. The Mixed J18 Double brought the club its fifth gold of the championships, with Fia O’Gorman and Rory Barry taking victory for Killorglin A in 11:26.1. Kate McMahon and Noah Granville, racing as Killorglin B, finished sixth. There was also plenty to celebrate among the club’s youngest competitors. Natasha Donegan, Aoibhinn O’Sullivan, Mary O’Sullivan and Robyn O’Shea, coxed by Kavanagh, took silver in the Women’s J14 Coxed Quad in their first Coastal Junior Championships, finishing just 5.2 seconds behind the winning Tullaghan/ Loughros crew. The medal was an encouraging championship debut for the J14 crew and rounded off a day that showcased Killorglin’s strength across several age groups. Congratulations to all the athletes, cox Celine Kavanagh, coach Michael Fleming, and the parents and supporters who travelled to Bantry and supported the crews throughout the day.

SPORT NOTES
Killarney Athletic U12 GIRLS: MEK 2 Killarney Athletic 4. This was very much a panel performance where all 14 girls got great game time. Our captain Cara Brady won the toss and the team fired on all cylinders for the entire game. MEK were tough opponents and until the final whistle we were never sure of the win. Thanks to MEK for a very sporting game and thanks to the referee for officiating. U13 GIRLS: Killarney Athletic u13b girls 2 V 3 Tralee Dynamos. This was a super performance by the girls in their first league game of the season. The girls defended brilliantly and attacked with pace, creating numerous chances. Athletic deserved at least a draw from this game and had Dynamos under immense pressure in the closing stages but wasn’t to be on this occasion. Scorer: Jessie Doolan scored twice. U13 BOYS DIVISION 2: Killarney Athletic B vs Mastergeeha B. A solid display from our young Blues this afternoon as we welcomed Mastergeeha to Woodlawn. A well-earned three points, with the following lads getting on the scoresheet: Anthony Troci, Filip Niedzialek, Liam Kiely, Dylan Murphy and Ollie Pyne. A great start to the season, with plenty of positives to take from the match. A big thanks to Mastergeeha for the game and to the referee for officiating. MOTM – Liam Kiely. ATHLETIC U13C BOYS: Killarney Athletic 4 - 0 LB Rovers. Goalscorers Diego Ruiz scored twice, Carlos Gonzalez and Conor Hayes Ryan. Great performance from all the lads in the first game back. Man of the match Jamie O'Sullivan playing his first game for Athletic. Lads played some really great football and were pinning LB Rovers back straight from kick off. Goals from Carlos and Diego saw us 2 up at half time with another two goals added in a very solid performance.

Next up is an away game against Newbridge Town FC at 5pm this Saturday. U14 DIV 2 SOUTH: MEK B 3-2 Killarney Celtic C. Jack Galvin Adam O'Sullivan. Celtic C had a tough 1st half, but the squad showed great determination to come back in the 2nd half and were unlucky not to get
a share of the spoils. U13 PREMIER: St Brendan's Park 5-2 Killarney Celtic. Conall Favier, Finn Cronin. Celtic tried hard to peg back St Brendan's Park but came up short at the end. U11 PREMIER: St Brendan's Park 3-4 Killarney Celtic. James Keane 2, Finn Casey, Nathan Foley. Celtic edged this fine game. Celtic led 2-1 at half time and went 3-1 ahead in the 2nd half. Park reduced the margin to 1 but Celtic struck again to lead 4-2 before the hosts came again late on to leave Celtic winners on the night. U11 DIV 2: Killorglin B 2-4 Killarney Celtic B. Cayden Koeller. The squad showed some fine skill in this excellent win. GIRLS: U12 Div - Killarney Celtic 3-0 QPR B. Hope O'Brien 2, Rianne Spillane. A winning start for the U12 Girls here. Most of the squad are U11 so it was a fine performance with this game being their 1st time on a bigger pitch.
Mastergeeha U12 GIRL’S DIVISION 1 SOUTH: Mastergeeha 7 v MEK B 1. Goal scorers on the day were Ellie Lynch O'Doherty (4), Ellie O'Mahony Erica Moynihan and Treasa O'Donoghue. Well done to our u12 Girls who opened our league campaign with a good home win against MEK B. Good overall team performance. New players welcome for season ahead girls born 2015 or 2016. U13 GIRL’S PREMIER: Mastergeeha A 3 v Park A 2. An excellent first half saw Mastergeeha lead 3 - 0. Some excellent work from Neassa O’Sullivan down the wing created the first. Gracie Maher latched on to a through ball and finished coolly to get the 2nd. Just before half time, a debut goal from Emily O’Donoghue who fired to the top corner. The second half ebbed and flowed but when The Park scored two quick goals, Mastergeeha girls backs were to the wall. Up steps goalkeeper and captain for the night, Ellie Fleming with some vital saves and lead by a very influential Anniemai O’Donoghue at centre back Mastergeeha held out. Some great performances throughout but Olivia O’Connor shone the brightest with some powerful running and determination in midfield. Thank you to The Park for a very sporting match, we look forward to meeting later in the season. U14 GIRLS PREMIER: Castleisland 4 v Mastergeeha 0. Our first game of the season got off to a difficult start against a strong and well-organised Castleisland side. We found ourselves 2–0 down at half-time, leaving us with plenty to do in the second half. Unfortunately, Castleisland came out even stronger after the break and added two more goals to secure a 4–0 victory. It just wasn’t our day, but there is plenty of football to be played and lots for us to work on as we look ahead to our next game.
Killarney Legion GAA LOTTO: Numbers: 5, 19, 22, 24. Bonus 2. Match 3s/Lucky dip Kathleen Murphy. Katie O’Leary. Dan Murphy.
U14 LADIES: Fitzgerald Stadium, no less was the venue for Killarney Legions under 14 ladies East Kerry final against our near neighbours, Kilcummin last Friday evening. In near perfect conditions and with a full squad of Legion players, led by Captain, Mia Cox the ball was thrown in and the game got underway to a rapid start. In the first half, Legion pushed ahead to a strong lead notwithstanding some fluid play from Kilcummin and they are taking their scoring opportunities when they presented themselves. The Legion ladies doubled down on their work in the first half though, with contributions from everyone on the bench into the second half. Kilcummin didn't give up and battled on and dug out their scores along the way but there was too much room between the teams and Legion came out the deserved victors in the end. We couldn't single anyone out as ALL the girls including the support from the u 12 panel, played a stormer and were a true credit to our club and crest. Following the post-match presentation by our chairman, John Keane to the Captain and team, the celebrations continued where we invaded four-star Pizza and mayhem ensued, with the girls still high on the excitement of their victory. We nearly had to call the ref back in! It was a great evening and the girls thoroughly enjoyed themselves and had great fun! From playing the final in Fitzgerald Stadium, their deserved victory and topping it off in four star. Thanks to our LGFA Chairman and Secretary, Ted and Annette for facilitating the game being played in Fitzgerald stadium, Fitzgerald stadium staff on the day, the parents and our team supporters who always encouraged from the sidelines especially at the tougher matches we faced earlier in the season, our Club Chairman for presentation, Seanie and all the staff at four star who were very patient with us, but most importantly the girls themselves who did us as their coaches, and the club proud.
Spa GAA SPA LADIES: Spa Senior Ladies booked their place in the semi-final of the Bon Secours County Championship Junior Premier with a 1-12 to 1-5 victory over Glenflesk in Sunday's quarter-final at Spa. Spa led 1-5 to 0-1 at half-time, with Mairead Finnegan finding the net and Saoirse Kelly in excellent scoring form from frees. Glenflesk enjoyed a strong spell early in the second half, but Spa weathered the pressure before regaining control. Ciara O'Sullivan contributed three points, with Kelly and Finnegan also adding scores, while the Spa defence was strong throughout. Glenflesk battled to the end and scored a late goal, but Mairead Bennett rounded off the scoring with her second point of the game. Spa now travel to Fossa on Sunday for the county semi-final, 12pm start. SPA JUNIORS: Spa Junior Men got their Cahill Cup campaign off to a winning start on Sunday with a 6-13 to 2-11 victory away to Listowel Emmets. Spa led 3-5 to 1-4 at
half-time and, despite a strong spell from Listowel early in the second half which saw the gap reduced to three points, Spa regained control and finished strongly. Michael Horgan was the leading scorer with 2-3, while Niall McCarthy contributed 1-5, Mikey Moynihan 1-3 and Oran O'Neill 1-2. JJ O'Donoghue also found the net as Spa secured an impressive opening win. The Juniors are back in Cahill Cup action this coming weekend when they host Currow, details will be on our website and socials once confirmed. GET INVOLVED IN SCÓR: Entries are now being sought for Scór na nÓg and Scór na bPáistí in Spa GAA. Dr Crokes GAA COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP: Semi Final Dr. Crokes 1:25 Na Gaeil 2:22. There was plenty of drama in Castleisland last Sunday as we booked our place in the Club Championship final following a thrilling semi-final victory over Na Gaeil on penalties. Na Gaeil made a flying start with an early goal, but we settled well with scores from David Shaw, Michael Burns, Tony Brosnan, Cian McMahon and Gavin O’Shea. The sides could not be separated at the end of normal time 0:18 to 2:12. Extra time brought more twists, with Tony Brosnan finding the net and further scores from Brian Looney, Cian McMahon, David Shaw and Tony Brosnan leaving the sides all level after 20 minutes of extra time. With the sides still inseparable, penalties were required. Shane Murphy produced two crucial saves while Tony Brosnan, Cian McMahon, Alex Hennigan and David Shaw all showed nerves of steel from the spot to send us through to the Club Championship final. MINOR COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP Semi Final Dr. Crokes 0:11 East Kerry 3:15. LOTTO took place on September 14th. Numbers drawn were 2, 8, 14, 15. Jackpot of €5,000 was WON. Fossa GAA INTERMEDIATE CHAMPIONSHIP: Fossa were crowned Intermediate Champions after a monumental battle with Kilcummin in the Fitzgerald Stadium on Sunday. Considering that both sides went to extra time the previous weekend, they served up a titanic encounter where the result was in the balance right to the end. Rian Colleran opened the scoring for Fossa with a lovely point on the run, Kilcummin then hit two before Eoin Talbot chipped over the equaliser on the 8th minute. Kilcummin dominated proceedings around the middle of the field and Fossa were finding it hard to get out of their own half, Kilcummin hit three without reply and a great goal line clearance from Sam Buckley kept them at bay as they pressed hard. Paddy Sheehan and Ted O’Gorman kicked two points to reduce the deficit, but Kilcummin were dangerous in attack and were four ahead by the15th minute. In spite of living off limited possession, David Clifford still managed to kick a brace of points and with Emmett O’Shea pointing a free and Paudie Clifford landing a fantastic two pointer, it left the score 0-12 to 0-10 in favour of Kilcummin at the break. Fossa started the second half well, Paudie Clifford kicked the first score, and David landed a brace of two pointers to put Fossa ahead. Kilcummin replied with two scores of their own, but Fossa were competing better at this stage. Jack Hallissey won a turnover ball that he had no right to win which resulted in a massive David Clifford two pointer which really lifted the team. Shane O’Sullivan pulled off a point blank save, Brian Myers and Dan O’Connell defended really well and with the younger players like Ted O’Gorman and Darren Ryan really stepping up to the plate, it gave Fossa momentum. Kilcummin were still very dangerous and the kept the scoreboard ticking and were within touching distance all the time. Eoin Talbot came into the game at this stage and a beautiful pass by Paudie Clifford sent him off down the wing which ended with another fantastic two pointer from the maestro, David Clifford. The Fossa subs of Fintan Coffey, Fionn Doyle, Mark Kennelly and Harry Buckley made a big impact when introduced and Fossa closed out the game with a brace from David Clifford and a fine point from the excellent Darren Ryan. It finished Fossa 0-26, Kilcummin 0-22.
Kilcummin GAA INTERMEDIATE CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP FINAL: Kilcummin 0-22 Fossa 0-26. Heartbreak for our players, mentors and supporters on Sunday as we came up short by four points in the final in Fitzgerald stadium in front of a massive crowd.
We are immensely proud of their commitment and efforts to capture the title and overcome many frustrations during the game. We also acknowledge the team’s progress game on game and while it was not to be on Sunday they have given their supporters plenty to cheer about and great hope going forward. Congratulations to Fossa and good luck in the future. Team Brendan Kealy (0-1), Chris O’Leary, Dara Stack, James Williams (01), Sean O’Leary, Dara O’Callaghan, James Nagle, Paul O’Shea (0-4), Colm Kelleher, Mark O’Shea, (0-2), Kieran Murphy, (03), Cian Foley, (0-1), Mikey Casey, (0-4), Kevin McCarthy (0-1), Philip O’Leary (02), Subs used Kevin Gorman, Matt Keane (0-2), Jack Fogarty (0-1), Ian Devane, Dan Moynihan.
