Football fever is set to grip Killarney as Killarney Celtic prepares to take its place on the national stage in the newly established FAI National League.
Villa FC take on Newbridge Town, giving the local squad a brief breather before the mid-season run-in.
The club represented local sport at the official 2026 season launch at the National Indoor Arena on the Sport Ireland Campus in Abbotstown. Manager Tim Jones and team captain Matt Keane attended the event alongside delegates from the other 14 founding member clubs, marking the formal expansion of the Irish football pyramid into a third tier. Speaking at the launch, Interim FAI National Competitions Lead Garret Higgins highlighted the significance of the new structure for clubs across Ireland. “The expansion of the football pyramid is huge for the game here in Ireland,” said Higgins. “It offers a new highly-competitive competition that will give a new standard for footballers to compete in. There’s a lot of excitement and a lot of intrigue about the upcoming season, but having Carlow, Kilkenny, Kildare, and Mayo represented in addition to more clubs in Kerry, Galway, Donegal, Waterford, Cork, and Dublin only serves to emphasise the passion for football throughout the country.” Higgins added that while the inaugural campaign will be a learning experience,
The second half of the group phase begins on Saturday, October 3, with a Round 6 trip to SETU Carlow Sports Campus to take on CK United at 2pm. Killarney Celtic return to Celtic Park on Saturday, October 10, for a Round 7 encounter with Newbridge Town at 2pm, before travelling to the Cork capital on Saturday, October 17, to play UCC Soccer at the Mardyke Sports Grounds in Round 8. The group stage draws to a close with a double header against Waterford outfit Villa FC. Killarney Celtic host Villa at Celtic Park on Saturday, October 24, at 2pm for Round 9, before concluding their Group 3 schedule on the road at workLAB Connors Park on Saturday, November 14, at 5pm. Off the pitch, preparations for the new season continue. The club is hosting its annual Killarney Celtic Golf Classic on Saturday, September 5, at Beaufort Golf Club, with tee times available from 7am to 4pm. Teams will play home and away fixtures across ten rounds, with the three group winners and the best-placed runner-up advancing to the semi-finals in November. Promotion to the SSE Airtricity League of Ireland First Division will formally come into effect from the 2027 season onwards.

Liebherr Container Cranes Ltd has officially commenced construction on a new administration building at its Fossa facility, marking a major investment in its local operations. The milestone was marked with a groundbreaking ceremony attended by Patricia Rüf of the Liebherr family, the Liebherr Container Cranes Board of Directors, and members of the Maritime Cranes and Construction Technology Board. The new state-of-the-art building is designed to foster greater collaboration across functions and support modern

Liebherr's new factory extension breaks ground working methods. Construction is expected to take approximately 22 months, with completion targeted for summer 2028. "This investment represents a significant milestone for our Killarney facility," said Declan O’Sullivan, Managing Director of Sales at Liebherr Container Cranes Ltd. "It strengthens our ability to support how we work today and into the future, while reinforcing the importance of the site
within the Liebherr Group." Charlie McCarthy, Managing Director of Engineering, added that the project will create a working environment matching the scale and ambition of the company's Killarney operations. To facilitate construction, a number of office-based staff will temporarily relocate to alternative facilities, including office space at Fexco in Killorglin, to ensure operational continuity.
Established in Fossa in 1958 as Liebherr’s first production facility outside Germany, the Killarney site has grown into a global centre of excellence for container crane design and manufacture. The project forms part of a broader investment programme by the Liebherr family in County Kerry, which includes recent developments at the Europe Hotel & Resort and ongoing upgrades at The Dunloe Hotel & Gardens.
57-hectare solar farm approved for Milltown area Kerry County Council has granted 10-year planning permission for a large-scale solar farm and battery storage facility outside Milltown. The application, lodged by Laurel Ridge Solar Farm Ltd, covers a 57-hectare site across the townlands of Ballyoughtragh South, Commons, Farranmanagh, Knocknaman, and Lisheennashingane near Milltown. The approved development features approximately 230,000 square metres of ground-mounted solar photovoltaic panels, string inverters, and 14 single-storey electrical transformer stations. An energy storage compound on site will house 36 containerised energy storage
modules, nine transformers, two auxiliary transformers, spare parts storage, and an office unit. Permission was also granted for a 38kV substation with a single-storey control building, alongside a 3.87km underground grid connection running along private lands and local roads (L11003, L8003, and L80030) to link with the existing Oughtragh 110kV substation. Access to the site will be served by six entrances off the L11003 and L80030 roads, with one entrance reserved strictly for the temporary construction phase. A Natura Impact Statement was submitted as part of the application process. The solar farm has been granted an operational lifespan of 40 years.

€1m EuroMillions win at Centra The Reeks Gateway Celebrations are underway in Killarney after Centra at The Reeks Gateway on Tralee Road sold a EuroMillions ticket worth €1,005,000 in the Friday, August 21 draw. The lucky winner secured the life-changing sum through the special Ireland Only Raffle event after purchasing a Quick Pick ticket on the day of the draw. Store owner John Bowler, who has operated the shop for over 20 years, expressed his delight after receiving the news from the National Lottery. "There’s a great buzz around the store and we’re absolutely delighted," Bowler said. "We have a mix of local customers and visitors coming through our doors every day, so the winner could be any-
one. While we’ve sold fantastic prizes over the years, this is by far the biggest. It’s wonderful news for Killarney." National Lottery spokesperson Emma Monaghan urged anyone who bought a ticket at the store on Friday to check their numbers carefully. Ruairí O'Flaherty honoured with Killarney portrait mural Killarney has recognised Grammy-winning sound engineer Ruairí O'Flaherty with a portrait box mural on Park Road.
O'Flaherty joins actor Michael Fassbender and actress Jessie Buckley in Killarney’s street art collection celebrating local talent. Painted by artist Paul Egan as part of his Icons Collection, the artwork is located at the Omniplex Cinema. Models in Recovery returns to Gleneagle The annual Models in Recovery Fashion Show returns to the Gleneagle Arena on Wednesday, September 16, to raise funds for the Kerry Hospice Foundation. Dunloe Hotel plans staff quarters amid rental crisis The severe accommodation pressures facing the local hospitality sector have been laid bare this week as Killarney Hotels Limited lodged a planning application for purpose-built staff housing at The Dunloe Hotel & Gardens in Beaufort.
Lawless Jewellery named finalist in Irish Made Awards
As rental and sales properties across the Killarney region become increasingly difficult to source, providing on-site housing has become critical for recruiting and retaining hospitality workers. The application submitted to Kerry County Council details plans for staff accommodation lodges arranged in two connected three-storey blocks around a central courtyard area.
Phase A of the development comprises 60 staff accommodation rooms and six common room areas, with an option for a Phase B expansion to add a further 18 rooms on the estate. The proposed scheme also includes roof-mounted photovoltaic solar panels, green roof systems, a single-storey gym building with attached bicycle and bin storage, staff car parking, landscaping, and connection to local utilities. The planning submission comes following the announcement in May of a major €100 million redevelopment project at the hotel. Works are underway to transform the existing five-star property into an even higher-spec luxury resort destination, scheduled to reopen in the second half of 2028.
Independent College Street jewellery brand Lawless has been named a finalist in the Jewellery category of the 2026 Irish Made Awards, run by Irish Country Magazine.
Founded by designer-maker Lyndsay Lawless, the one-woman business creates celestial jewellery inspired by mythology, symbolism, and the night sky. Each piece is handcrafted using stainless steel and natural gemstones in her studio located within the Kerry International Dark Sky Reserve. The collections are available online and stocked locally at LI•LY on College Street, which serves as the brand's retail home in Killarney. The nomination comes as both Lawless and the Irish Made Awards celebrate their 10th anniversaries this year. After relocating from London to Kerry in 2015 following a career with the NHS, Lawless established the business the following year.
"I have spent ten years building the brand in Kerry, designing and making beneath the protected night skies of the reserve, then bringing that work into Killarney through LI•LY," said Lawless. "To have it recognised on a national stage means a huge amount. Every order, shop visit, recommendation, and kind word from customers has helped get Lawless here. Now that the decision includes a public vote, I would love Kerry to get behind its own." Public voting is open online at irishcountrymagazine.ie/vote until September 8. Winners will be announced during an awards ceremony at The Johnstown Estate in County Meath on September 30.

Fossa Rowing Club celebrating All-Ireland success
Celebrations are continuing across Fossa following a hugely successful showing by Fossa Rowing Club at the Irish Coastal Rowing Federation All-Ireland Championships in Bantry. Over 50 local rowers travelled to West Cork to represent the club across 19 crews during three days of intense competition against the top coastal rowing talent in the country. Action began on Friday with strong performances from two U16 Mixed crews, before the Novice Mixed Final yielded the club's first silverware of the weekend. In a closely fought race, the Fossa Novice A crew put in a trojan effort to claim a bril-
liant third-place bronze, while the Novice B crew battled bravely to the finish line. Saturday saw early morning action as crews gathered at the Bantry marina. The club's U16 Girls got proceedings underway, with the A crew securing qualification for Sunday's final. Strong displays followed from the Sprint Ladies, while Alison Coffey featured in a composite crew masterclass. The U18 Mixed crew put major pressure on the field in their final,
before the U14 Boys finished strongly in their heat to book their place in Sunday's showpiece event. Flawless morning conditions greeted rowers on Sunday for the final day of racing. Fossa's Pre-Veteran Mixed and Senior Mixed crews put in solid performances, followed by a standout display from the club's youngest participants, the U12 Girls crew.
Despite deteriorating weather and choppy waters as the afternoon progressed, the Fossa Novice Men's crew delivered the highlight of the day in Race 9, producing a superb team performance to capture All-Ireland silver. Solid showings from the U18 Boys, Novice Ladies, and U16 Boys closed out a historic and proud weekend for the Fossa club on national waters.

Fly-tipping concerns raised over Kilcummin Bog Walk Members of the Kilcummin community have expressed growing concern following a series of illegal fly-tipping incidents along the local Bog Walk. Recent dumping along the route has involved green waste, including hedge clippings, discarded trees, and garden refuse. Local representatives are reminding the public that discarding garden waste on bogland or mountain trails is strictly ille-
gal under the Waste Management Acts and Litter Pollution Acts, carrying the same penalties as dumping household rubbish. Although organic, introduced green waste disrupts the native habitat of blanket bogs. Residents who spot illegal dumping are encouraged to report incidents anonymously to Kerry County Council on 066 716 2000, via the Environmental Hotline at 1800 326 228, or by emailing environ@kerrycoco.ie.

Historic first Konkani Mass held in Franciscan Friary Around 300 members of the Goan community gathered at the Franciscan Friary Church on Fair Hill on Sunday, August 16, for the first-ever Konkani Mass celebrated in Killarney. Organised by the Goan Association Ireland alongside local community members to mark the Feast of the Assumption, the historic service allowed attendees to celebrate Mass in their native language, Konkani. The main celebrant was Fr Clifford Fernandes, Assistant Parish Priest of Holy
Trinity Church in Benaulim, Goa, who was joined by concelebrant Rev Fr Antony Jukes OFM. The service was coordinated locally by Gracian Rodrigues, Ambassador of the Goan Association Ireland. Music throughout the Mass was provided by a local youth choir featuring Melroy, Royston, Andrew, Paloma, Skyla, Olivia, Snezel, and Jerusha. Ideal conditions saw nearly every participant catch a fish on the night, supported by watching parents, grandparents, and experienced club members who provided tuition throughout the event. The competition was run under the Inland Fisheries Ireland Sponsorship Programme 2026. Inland Fisheries Ireland sponsored permits for the evening
and provided on-the-bank assistance through Assistant Fisheries Inspector Tim Moore, alongside colleagues Jose and Paul. Every young participant received a goody bag aimed at fostering interest in aquatic species and environmental conservation. "We are delighted with the ongoing support from Inland Fisheries through their support program," said club secretary Mike Doody. "It allows the club to offer an evening's fishing to local juveniles with tuition from experienced club anglers and knowledge from the Fisheries team."

Friends, long-standing customers, and well-wishers called in throughout the day to celebrate the milestone anniversary with the team. Fashion consultant and style influencer Helena Brosnan, known as Super Bett, was in store throughout the day to offer personalised styling advice to shoppers. "I wondered how busy we would be with the end of the summer holidays and Ladies Day at the Killarney Races
taking place," said owner Karen Griffin. "We were delighted with the turnout. It was lovely to see so many familiar faces coming through the door to celebrate 10 years of Scarlett in Killarney." Scarlett’s story began in Midleton, Co. Cork, before opening its Killarney boutique in 2016. NEW SENSORY GARDEN OPENS AT ST OLIVER’S: Pupils at St Oliver’s National School are enjoying a new sensory garden ahead of the new school term, following its official opening by principal Colm Ó’Suilleabháin. Designed to encourage play, movement, and relaxation, the facility features climbing boards, balance beams, mirrors, a sensory walkway, a mud kitchen, a xylophone, and safety matting. A vibrant surround mural was designed and painted by school staff. Project coordinators Leana O’Brien and Olive Horgan praised the contributions of staff, management, caretaker Dan, and fundraising lead Lorraine O’Connell. Funding was secured through local businesses, including O’Carroll Engineering, Tricel, KWD, Kerry Coaches, Cork Hygiene, Killarney Printing Works, Killarney Hardware, and M.D. O’Shea & Sons, alongside bake sales run by Sixth Class pupils from 2024 to 2026. The garden includes a memorial bench for beloved SNA Martina Dineen, who passed away earlier this year, funded jointly by staff and the 2026 Sixth Class.

Pig’s Lane crowned Bar of the Year
Killarney’s subterranean venue Pig's Lane emerged as a triple winner at the Bar of the Year 2026 Awards in Dublin on Monday night. The College Street venue was named overall Bar of the Year, alongside taking Gold for both Cocktail Bar of the Year and Best Designed Bar / Inside Space. The announcements were made at a gala ceremony hosted by Anton Savage at the Clayton Hotel on Burlington Road. Operating under the family-run O'Donoghue Ring Collection, the underground
cocktail bar and whiskey parlour opened in 2023. The venue previously secured Innovative Bar of the Year in 2024 and Best Designed Bar in 2025 before taking the top national prize this year. Judges praised the venue for its "unmatched excellence across the board". The broader O’Donoghue Ring Collection earned eight finalist nominations across
three properties, including Café du Parc and The Kenmare Rooms. "We are so proud to be crowned Ireland’s Bar of the Year 2026," said founder Gemma Ring. "A huge amount of work, creativity, and passion goes into everything we do".
Pig’s Lane derives its name from the historic 1800s designation for the thoroughfare connecting College Street to Railway Road. On September 11, the bar will host a collaborative evening featuring Michelin Bib Gourmand tapas from Dingle's Solas paired with bespoke cocktails.
Stronger Together Choir Killarney Camera Club returns for autumn term to mark 25th anniversary The Stronger Together Choir is set to return for its new autumn season on September 3 following an exceptionally successful year of performances. Rehearsals will take place at 7:30 pm at The Mon Primary School on New Road. The community-based choir operates on an inclusive, open-door policy, welcoming both returning and new singers without the need for auditions or prior reading experience. The group covers a wide range of mu-
sical genres in a relaxed setting, placing equal emphasis on vocal performance and the social aspect of community singing. The upcoming five-week autumn term is priced at €25, with registration taking place on the opening night. Members will also have access to a suggestion box during rehearsals to put forward ideas for future repertoire. Killarney Camera Club will celebrate its 25th anniversary with a public exhibition at Killarney House and the launch of a commemorative booklet.
Founded in 2001, the club is marking its silver jubilee with an exhibition showcasing members' work across a broad range of photographic styles. The formal opening takes place at Killarney House on Saturday, August 29 at 2.30pm, where Mayor of Killarney Councillor John O’Donoghue will officially open the display. The exhibition is open to the public
and will run through to October 4, with refreshments provided at the opening event. To further mark the 25-year milestone, the club has produced a special Anniversary Booklet featuring 25 selected photographs. Calls to expand mink management to National Park
Local conservation group Lochanna Beo is calling for a targeted American Mink management programme to be introduced in Killarney National Park, following the rollout of a pilot control scheme in the Lough Ree region. First imported for fur farming in the 1950s, the non-native semi-aquatic predator has spread nationwide. Reaching lengths between 45cm and 65cm, mink are opportunistic carnivores that pose a severe threat to ground-nesting waders, waterfowl, and gamebirds by consuming both adult birds and eggs. With no natural predators in Ireland, individual mink can hold territories stretching up to five kilometres along local waterways. Minister of State for Nature Christopher O'Sullivan launched a three-and-a-halfyear pilot project in September 2025 at Lough Ree. A collaboration between the Breeding Waders European Innovation Partnership, the National Association of Regional Game Councils, and the National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS), the initiative utilises advanced detection, trapping techniques, and volunteer citizen science. Lochanna Beo hopes the framework will
be expanded to Kerry under upcoming updated EU regulations. "American Mink are Ireland's most destructive invasive species," said Valerie Harrington of Lochanna Beo. "They put immense pressure on our native wildlife alongside existing challenges like habitat loss and water quality deterioration. Our group has grown to around 150 members since forming earlier this year, and we are confident local volunteers would gladly step up to work alongside NPWS staff if a trained network is established here." In addition to addressing invasive fauna, the group continues to raise awareness around aquatic plant threats like Fringed Water Lily and American Skunk Cabbage, while working to improve water quality indicators across Lough Leane, the River Laune, the lower River Flesk, and Folly Stream. A total of 45 club players aged 12 to 18 underwent vital heart checks designed to promote early detection and heart health awareness among young athletes. Medical personnel from Advanced Medical Services conducted the screenings with professionalism and care, while the club's Healthy Club Team oversaw the
smooth operation of the event. The Dillon Quirke Foundation operates without government funding, relying entirely on public support to raise awareness of Sudden Adult Death Syndrome (SADS) and provide non-cost cardiac clinics to sports clubs across Ireland. Make-A-Wish transforms boy’s dream into reality What began as one young boy’s wish became a spectacular celebration of fashion, friendship, and community at the Killarney Plaza Hotel on Saturday. Enis O’Connor from Castleisland had a very special wish through Make-A-Wish Ireland: to have his very own fashion show. Coordinated by Kerry O’Connor Weddings and Events alongside MakeA-Wish Ireland, the event took over the McShain Suite for a day to remember. Enis took full charge as producer, stylist, and creative director, selecting outfits and advising on hair, makeup, and nail colours. All models volunteered from
the Fiona Crowley Stage School to bring his vision to life on the runway. All clothes featured were pre-loved items sourced from the Irish Cancer Society in Tralee, Sue Ryder in Castleisland, and Diamond Bridal in Cork. A 27-strong Polish hiking group left Dublin on Monday to begin a three-week, 500km trek across Ireland that will conclude in Killarney on September 15. Organised by NINIWA – the youth ministry branch of the Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate in Poland – the 'Eurotrip: West Coast Ireland' expedition will see participants trek through the Wicklow Mountains, Mayo, Connemara, the Cliffs of Moher, and Kerry, before completing an ascent of Carrauntoohil. The group travels "by faith", carrying all equipment in backpacks without support vehicles or pre-booked accommodation, pitching tents wherever their daily route ends. Daily Mass is offered along the way with prayers dedicated to the young people of Europe. Originally planned for New Zealand, the route was redirected to Ireland due to Middle East flight disruptions. The expedition holds major personal significance for team leader Fr Dominik Ochlak OMI, who worked as a carpenter

Adult set dancing classes return to Fossa Fossa-Two Mile Comhaltas has announced the return of its adult set dancing classes, offering local residents a new evening activity options this winter. The weekly sessions will run from October through December at the Fossa Community Centre, taking place every

Designed to encourage social connection, fitness, and traditional Irish dance in a relaxed environment, the classes are open to both complete beginners and experienced dancers. Remembering Dolly, a friend of Dingle The queen of country Dolly Parton passed away this week following a short battle with cancer. The world was shocked by the news. From Tennessee to Timbuktu, people everywhere mourned the loss of the country music icon. Dolly was a living
legend and known right around the world for her music. She had a positive aura and a strong presence. Her music was loved by all, 9 to 5, Jolene, I Will Always Love You, the list of hits was endless, and the words of her songs are known by everybody. Dolly also had a special connection to Kerry. During a visit to Ireland in 1990, she found herself in none other than Páidí Ó Sé’s pub in Ventry. She sang a few songs and entertained the Kerry
crowd, with Paidi himself in attendance. Páidí gifted Dolly a Kerry jersey that he had worn during a match in 1985. In later interviews, Dolly revealed that the jersey had been framed and was proudly hanging on the wall of her home, a lasting reminder of her memorable visit to Kerry. She was also friends with Irish singer Margo O’Donnell who recounted her friendship with Dolly fondly in recent days. Dolly Parton was a worldwide treasure and her presence in music will be sorely missed.

MTU launches new course in September Munster Technological University (MTU) is set to launch a dedicated higher education programme for adults with intellectual disabilities and learning difficulties at its Kerry campus this September.
Irish passengers require passports for ferry to UK Irish Ferries has announced that passengers travelling between Ireland and Britain will be required to carry a valid passport or Irish passport card when travelling on its services from September 28. The new requirement will apply to Irish Ferries’ Dublin–Holyhead and Rosslare– Pembroke routes, in both directions. Passengers will no longer be able to use driving licences, national identity cards or other forms of photographic identification to board these services. The change is being introduced by Irish Ferries to comply with UK Border Force requirements relating to the accuracy and integrity of passenger information collected before boarding. Ferry operators are required to collect and
The Certificate in Personal and Professional Development for Employability and Further Studies will give ten students the opportunity to earn a twoyear, part-time Level 5 qualification while participating fully in university life. Delivered through MTU’s EmpowerEd programme, the course is funded under Path 4 Phase 2 of the Government’s National Access Plan. It aims to widen access to higher education for students who have traditionally had limited opportunities to progress to third level. The curriculum combines academic, personal and career development. Students will complete dedicated modules in Advocacy, Human Rights and
Personal Development, with practical electives including Food and Beverage Preparation and Culture, Health and Wellbeing. A co-learning model will allow participants to take selected classes alongside the wider undergraduate population. Students will also undertake study visits and have opportunities to join MTU’s social and sporting societies. Preparation for employment will be embedded throughout the programme. Students will progress from work-shadowing opportunities within areas such as MTU’s library, IT and student services to external placements with employers across the region. Programme partners include Tralee Chamber Alliance and Kerry Group. MTU is inviting employers and community organisations across the region to engage with the programme and explore work-placement and employment opportunities for EmpowerEd students. The application deadline is September 20.

Passengers travelling after 28 September are therefore being advised to check their documentation before setting off and to allow sufficient time to renew a passport if necessary.
US threatens sanctions on Iran In an attempt to put further economic pressure on Iran, the United States announced new economic sanctions against the country.
Washington has warned that countries and businesses continuing to trade with Iran could also face repercussions. Under the newly announced Operation Economic Outcast, the US plans to sanction around 60 entities and individuals accused of helping Iran procure nuclear-related technology. Five key sectors are being targeted, including digital assets, technology, gold, aviation and shipping. Washington says it expects countries and companies with links to Iran to cease economic activity with the country. However, experts have
questioned whether the sanctions will be effective without the support of China, one of Iran’s major trading partners. Some analysts believe Donald Trump is unlikely to secure Beijing’s cooperation, potentially limiting the impact of the measures. However, it appears that these threats have not been taken as seriously as Donald Trump hoped for. Oman, a US ally, is still negotiating with Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz. Both countries have claim to the waterway, therefore it is hoped that a negotiation can take place between them. Last week, Donald Trump threatened to bomb Oman if it interfered with American’s involvement in the waterways. Oil prices slowly fell this week with talks between Iran and Oman progressing.

Mothú delivers vibrant summer-end spectacle The town centre played host to a vibrant street spectacle last Saturday evening, 22 August, as West Kerry performance group MOTHÚ returned to mark the end of the summer season. The free outdoor event featured giant puppets, fire dancers, musicians, and lantern displays, bringing music, magic, and theatrical performance directly to the heart of the town. Titled The Seeker (or An Cuardaitheoir), the production drew inspiration from the writings of renowned 20th-century Irish language poet Seán Ó Ríordáin. The
performance explored themes of the soul, isolation, and rebirth, bringing the poet's work to life through large-scale creative arts. MOTHÚ was already well known to local audiences following previous acclaimed street performances in Killarney, including Peig Mór and Aisling Ghobnait. The spectacle began at Market Cross at 8.45pm, with the performance leading a parade through Main Street before finishing in College Square. Felicity told Jack everything about the strange man seemingly following them, and the feeling of being watched. He told her that they shouldn’t let it ruin their fun on match day, but they’d both be vigilant just in case there was something wrong. At first, everything seemed fine. Auntie Sheila bid Jack and Felicity farewell as she went to meet her friends. Felicity dragged Jack towards Courtney’s. There was meant to be live music and a good crowd. They went inside, and were indeed met with good music. They sat down with drinks, but they remained untouched. Felicity was too busy observing the crowd, now made paranoid by her sightings of the man in the green hooded jumper. A shiver went down Felicity’s spine as she made eye contact with a man dressed head-to-toe in black. He looked like he was travelling somewhere with a clear goal in mind, but upon meeting her gaze he changed his course and headed straight for her and Jack. Felicity felt her heart quicken, and she grabbed Jack by his jacket and tugged him off of his stool and towards the back exit. They burst through the door only for Felicity’s stomach to sink like a stone. There was no one out here. There were always people out the back of Courtney’s.
SURPRISE ENCOUNTER
A solitary figure stood in the alleyway, blocking them from leaving. It was the man in the green hooded jumper. “Look who we’ve got here,” he said, before he reached back to pull down his hood to reveal – Anthony! Felicity frowned. “Anthony? You’re the one who’s been watching us?” “Of course I have been!” he cried. “First you foil my plans for a new delivery truck, then you shove me under the authority’s microscope, and finally you get my brother arrested!” “But why were you up Carrauntoohil?” Jack piped up. Anthony looked like he was going to explode with rage. “I was looking for a new place to store my merchandise after my previous storehouse was compromised. Until you,” he pointed between Felicity and Jack “meddling busybodies insisted on getting me down the mountain.” Felicity glanced at his leg which was indeed in a cast. He hadn’t faked his injury, which made her wonder why he was complaining about their help. “What on Earth? And what do you mean ‘your brother’?” even as she said the words it clicked in her head. “Jerky, exquisite kangaroo jerky imported from Australia. He was selling it at the concert but again you two dunderheads had to go and ruin it!” He took a deep breath and smiled nastily. “But now I have you, and even though my brother is in custody, and I didn’t find another storehouse, by God I will have that ice cream truck.” Jack stiffened beside her. Felicity tight-
ened her grip on his arm to keep him still and quiet as Anthony continued. “That truck will be my salvation. My last jerky shipment got caught on the trip coming here, and my damn driver didn’t tell me. He just absconded with his pay check. My supplier won’t wait much longer. The thing is already going to take 52 days to get there. The truck would be half way there if you two hadn’t gotten it taken off of my sister. The amount of time it took to convince her to steal the damn thing for her stupid campervan dream was already too long.” “I don’t know,” Felicity said. “All I’m hearing is that we managed to beat you to it.” Anthony snarled at her. “Not that it matters now you little swot. You walked into my trap, and now Trevor will have to give me the truck if he wants to see his precious son again.” As Anthony pulled his phone out of his pocket, Felicity started to move. She grabbed Jack’s arm and pulled him with all of her might as she started running at and then past Anthony. They toppled him over, and his phone went flying into the alleyway wall with a crunch.
ESCAPE
Felicity heard him struggle to get up again with his leg in its cast. She made the most of it and continued dragging Jack onwards and out of the alley. There were crowds of people milling about in front of Lana. Felicity pushed herself and Jack into their midst. Out of the corner of her eye she saw three figures in all black, similar to the man from Courtney’s who had originally herded them into the alleyway. They were all talking into phones, scanning the heads of the crowd. Damn. Felicity shook off her denim jacket and threw it over Jack’s shoulders. He was broader than her, but if he didn’t wear the sleeves then the size difference wasn’t too noticeable. Felicity ducked as they passed close by to one of the men in black, nudging Jack to point him out as they neared. He got the message and hunched his shoulders, avoiding the man’s gaze. The group they had joined was apparently a group of Kerry-supporting college kids home from UCC for the match. Luckily for her they were weaving toward Felicity’s destination : Pig’s Lane. From where she and Jack were, Felicity could see her Auntie Sheila standing outside the pub with a cider in hand. She was amongst a small group of people, some smoking, some just stood with drinks talking. It took what felt like forever for them to trawl their way through the people, especially as Felicity was so aware of the men in black. But eventually they spilt out of the crowd, nearly crashing to the floor at Auntie Sheila’s feet. Tune in next week to see what happens ...

Leaving Cert students celebrate results day Leaving Certificate students across Killarney received their long-awaited examination results on Friday, bringing months of anticipation to an end. Photographers visited St Brendan's College, St Brigid's Presentation Secondary School, and Killarney Community College to capture the reactions of students, teachers, and proud parents as envelope results were handed out across the three local secondary schools. The morning saw scenes of celebration and relief as students gathered in school
halls and court-yards to share their outcomes and reflect on their secondary education journey. School principals and guidance staff were on hand throughout the day to offer support, guidance, and assistance to students as they begin planning their next steps. The Killarney Advertiser wishes all local Leaving Certificate students the very best of luck as they make the first steps into the next stage of their lives—whether progressing to third-level education, beginning an apprenticeship, or entering the workforce.

Wicklow farmer Michael Keegan made a memorable stop at Killarney's World Ploughing Monument on Friday during his 690km 'Miles of Hope' charity tractor run from Mizen Head to Malin Head. Keegan is undertaking the six-day journey across Ireland behind the wheel of a fully restored Deutz D40L tractor. The machine carries immense family history, as it is the exact tractor driven by his grandfather, Charlie Keegan, when he won the 12th World Ploughing Championship in Fuchsenbigl, Austria, in September 1964. Help starts in the community, and my hope is that this journey encourages everyone to be open to speaking about suicide if they're in trouble. Flora and fauna celebrated during Heritage Week Chris Barron and Tara Buckley from the Killarney National Park Education Centre led a series of popular guided walks across the Muckross Peninsula as part of National Heritage Week. The events highlighted both the rich history and biodiversity of the park, drawing strong interest from locals and visitors alike. A standout feature of the week was the nocturnal guided walk, where ideal nighttime conditions offered participants a glimpse into local wildlife with significant bat activity recorded along the route. First day excitement for Lissivigeen Junior Infants Excitement filled the air in Lissivigeen National School on Thursday as more than 30 Junior Infants marked their very first day of school. The new pupils settled into their classrooms, taking their first big steps in primary education under the guidance of
Principal Ellen Cagney, teachers Kristine Sheahan and Bríd Ryan, and SNA Marie Carroll-O'Sullivan. The children spent their morning making new friends, exploring their classrooms, and getting used to school routine during a memorable milestone for the school community. Taoiseach makes historic visit to Beaufort schools
An Taoiseach Micheál Martin made a historic visit to St Francis Special School and St Mary’s of the Angels on Wednesday afternoon, marking the first time a serving Taoiseach has visited either Beaufort facility. The visit followed a recent Dáil invitation extended by Kerry Fianna Fáil TD Michael Cahill, who accompanied the Taoiseach alongside local Councillor Tommy Cahill. During the tour, the Taoiseach met with management, staff, residents, and families to observe the services firsthand and discuss operational challenges. Both Michael and Tommy Cahill welcomed the visit, emphasizing the campus's potential to become a super respite centre of excellence for children and adults with profound disabilities. "This was a truly historic occasion,"

Grants for solar panels The Solar Electricity Grant provides a grant to help with the cost of buying and installing solar photovoltaic (PV) panels for your home. The grant is administered by the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI). Their website is www.seai. ie You must apply for the grant and get a grant offer from the SEAI before you get your solar panels and start any work. There are a number of things to consider before applying for the grant. For example, you should check if you
should insulate your home first and if you’ll need planning permission. What are solar panels? Solar panels are devices that use sunlight to generate hot water, or electricity to power electrical devices in your home. Solar panels that produce electricity are known as solar photovoltaic (PV) modules. These panels generate electricity when exposed to light. Solar PV is the rooftop solar you see on homes and businesses. Solar panels that produce hot water are
Irish Passport Card What is an Irish passport card? The Irish passport card is a travel document that Irish citizens can use for certain travel instead of the standard passport book. It is similar in size to a credit card and it has a SealCrypt strip. You can only get a passport card if you hold a valid Irish passport book. Adults and children can get passport cards. Where can I use it?
You can use the passport card when traveling in the European Union, the European Economic Area (which includes Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway) and Switzerland. If you are an Irish Citizen travelling from Ireland, you do not need a passport to enter the United Kingdom under Common Travel Area rights, but airlines and sea carriers may want you to prove your identity when
Help with funeral costs After a bereavement you may need financial support. The Department of Social Protection (DSP) provides certain once-off payments to help out families during this difficult time. Your local Community Welfare Officer deals with some of these payments. You must have made a certain number of PRSI contributions to be eligible for some social welfare payments. You may be eligible for other payments, if you pass a means test or if you are in urgent need. Time limits apply for many payments, so apply as early as is
possible. You can get help with the cost of the funeral in some specific situations. These are as follows: The Widowed or Surviving Civil Partner Grant is a once-off payment to widows/ widowers/surviving civil partners with dependent children. For the purpose of this grant, a dependent child is a child up to age 18, who is normally resident in the State and who is living with you. A child aged between 18 and 22 who is normally resident in the State continues to be a qualified child if they are in full-time education at a recognised school or college. This grant is a once-
known as solar thermal collectors or solar hot water collectors. This Solar Electricity Grant focuses on PV, where solar electric panels capture the light from the sun and convert it into the electricity that is used in your home to power your TV, kettle, toaster and so on. These panels are often mounted on the roof of your house or in the garden. Do I qualify for the Solar Electricity Grant? To qualify for a grant, you must: • Be the owner of a home built and occupied before 2021 • Use new materials and products that were not already covered by another grant scheme checking in. You should check with your airline or sea carrier to see what types of identification they accept. For travel to other non-EEA countries, you must use your standard Irish passport book.
• Use a registered company from the SEAI’s registered list of companies • Have the electrical works completed by a Safe Electric Ireland electrician • Apply to ESB Networks to be connected to the electricity distribution system using the ESB Networks NC6 form. Your registered installer should do this for you before they fit the system. • Provide a Declaration of Works signed by a registered installer on the SEAI Solar PV Approved Installer list • Have a Building Energy Rating (BER) carried out after the work is completed • Meet the requirements in the Solar PV Code of Practice online. The personal details you provide when applying for a passport card must be exactly the same as those on your passport book.
How to apply? You can only apply for a passport card
How long is it valid? The passport card is valid for 5 years or until your passport book expires, whichever period is shorter. If you are going to use your passport card when travelling, you must use the passport card number when checking in online.

To be eligible for this grant, the death must have resulted from: • An accident at work, • An accident while travelling directly to or from work • An occupational disease. The person must have paid a minimum of one week's PRSI. The Community Welfare Service prefers if you apply before the funeral takes place, but in practice, most
people apply afterwards. In many cases a payment or a grant cannot be paid until all the necessary documentation is received. If you are claiming the grant, you are responsible for the production of certificates, documents and any information required, for example: • D eath certificate • B irth certificate • Marriage or Civil Partnership certificate (to prove your relationship to the deceased) • F uneral receipts • The deceased person's Personal Public Service (PPS) number • Your PPS number may also be required
How much does it cost? An adult passport card costs €35. You will save money if you get your passport book and passport card at the same time as part of a bundle.

The Kingdom are currently sixth in the League of Ireland First Division on 36 points, just four points off fifth. The top team will be automatically promoted to the Premier Division (Cork City are 20 points ahead of the pack) with the second to fifth entering the playoffs. With eight games to go, Kerry are well in contention, but they will need to keep up their impressive home form and beat the teams around and below them, including Treaty who are ninth on 30 points. Spa Muckross athletes fly the flag for Kerry Spa Muckross Community Games athletes enjoyed a fantastic weekend representing Kerry at the Cairn Community Games National Athletics Finals in Carlow, producing a number of excellent performances against some of the best young athletes from across Ireland. Leading the way was the U14 Girls Relay Team of Kiley Biggins, Aoife Delaney, Lucy Devane, Kayla O’Sullivan and Alannah McGlynn, who produced a superb performance to finish fourth in Ireland, earning National Pewter Medals. There was also an excellent performance from the U12 Boys Relay Team of Gary Arthur, James Doody, Denis Doolan, Diarmuid O’Regan and Reece O’Donoghue, who finished an impressive fifth nationally. In the individual events, James Doody secured an excellent fifth-place finish in the U12 600m, while Aoife Delaney finished sixth in the U14 Hurdles. Reece

Spa Muckross was also proudly represented by Elsie O’Doherty in the U16 200m and Kiley Biggins in the U14 200m. Qualifying to compete at a National Final is a significant achievement in itself, and all of the Spa Muckross athletes did their
families, community and County Kerry proud. Congratulations to all of the athletes on their performances and to the families, coaches and supporters who helped them on their journey to the National Finals.

Kissane excels in Jerry Kiernan 5k race Conor Kissane from Killarney Valley AC finished in style in a top class 5km race in Listowel over the weekend. The sub-15-minute 5km athlete shows great proficiency in every distance from 800m upwards and with every season he continues to makes great strides forward. The race was won by Jeremiah Sheehan from North Cork AC, with Denis Hegarty in second place and Conor Kissane in third place. The Jerry Kiernan 5k was dedicated to Kerry's very own legend of athletics and on hand on the day to present the prizes and guest speak was Jerry's friend, the former world 5,000m champion and
Chairman of the Boards Eamon Coghlan. Jerry competed for Ireland on 17 occasions. Seven of those appearances were at the World Cross Country Championships. He won five Irish titles in races spanning from the 1500m to the marathon and was one of Kerry's only 4four-minute milers. The former RTÉ athletics analyst was at the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles having finished in 9th place, an achievement often overshadowed by his friend John Treacy's silver medal that day. In conversations at the Morton Stadium Jerry, who was friends with members of Killarney Valley AC and was a former Kerry minor footballer, was highly impressed by efforts in Killarney to develop track and field athletics.
Luke O’Hea's squad commence their campaign with a home game on Saturday October 3 against Templeogue and Mazburšs will join fellow new signings Dante Sofia and Jack Watkins in the coming weeks to prepare for the season start. Mazburšs is a 6’5” guard/forward who hails from Riga in Latvia. He has previously played for East Ball in his homeland. He has also represented Latvia internationally at 3 v 3 level. Speed and aggression are key elements in his game.

Eamonn Fitzgerald wraps up a thrilling weekend on the local GAA scene After the disappointment of losing both the men’s and LGFA All-Ireland finals, interest switched to the local club championship scene in all grades. Concentrating on the fortunes of clubs in Killarney and surrounding areas, let’s look at the state of play.
LGFA
After two rounds of the LGFA, Southern Gaels and Castleisland Desmonds, the unbeaten duo in Senior grade, lead on six points. Castleisland Desmonds 3-15 beat Dr Crokes 2-06 at Dr Crokes Park on Sunday last. MKL Gaels 3-17 beat Beaufort 2-9 at Beaufort. Scartaglen and Rathmore are still in the mix. In the Intermediate grade, Corca Dhuibhne and MKL Gaels are both unbeaten and meet in the final round on September 6. Austin Stacks 3-12 beat Firies 3-11 by that single point at Connolly Park. At Junior level, Listowel Emmets and Kilcummin are both on six points and meet on 6 September. Kilcummin made the long journey back west and will be very happy with that win 2-10 to 0-06 win over Daingean Uí Chúis. Listowel Emmets and Kilcummin are both on six points and meet on September 6. In the Novice grade, Cordal 5-11 beat Dromid Pearses 2-10 at home. The final round of group games across all four grades are scheduled for Sunday, September 6, with quarter-finals on September 13 and 20 and semi-finals from September 20, with the Senior and Intermediate County finals on Saturday, October 3. It’s wonderful to see such progress in the ongoing development of LGFA, where I have been so impressed with the skill levels and the dedication of all concerned, as the promised amalgamation of the Camogie Association, LGFA and GAA into one body is scheduled for 2027, promised by the working group

This level is equally intriguing. Fossa lead the way unbeaten after defeating Ballymacelligott 1-24 to 2-13, the only game the impressive All-Ireland Junior Club champions lost. Gneeveguilla beat Glenbeigh-Glencar 1-16 to 1-13 to keep their hopes alive. In group 2 Kilcummin have won all 3 games, leading the way after that home win over John Mitchels 2-14 to 0-19. Firies lost all 3 games, including the most recent loss to Ballydonoghue 2-6 to 1-12. In Group 3, Laune Rangers are steaming ahead unbeaten and leading the way after that 3-22 to Legion’s 2-10 win at Johnny Culloty Park. The home side were right in contention in the first half, but a scoring blitz by the Killorglin side in that second half deprived Legion of a home win. Beaufort, who had a very poor County League campaign, are unbeaten at the top, continuing their great form under former Kerry boss manager Peter Keane. THE MEN
It’s been a hectic schedule in the Club Championships for the men, with all 3 rounds of the groups played last weekend. Dr Crokes won all three games in the Senior, defeating Rathmore on Saturday last at Dr Crokes Park, even though Rathmore opened the smarter and led in the early stages. Once Dr Crokes scored, they led all the way, holding off the challenge of Rathmore to win 0-15 to 0-11. Unbeaten in all 3 group games, they have got a bye straight through to the semi-finals, as did Na Gaeil.
There was a gripping game at Spa as the hosts played Dingle. Both lost their previous 2 rounds, so a win was a must for both. Spa looked odds on leading in the closing stages, but if there is one thing that Dingle learned from their All-Ireland club win was never to give up. Rathmore edged them out in round one: they were very unlucky to lose by a single point at home to Crokes in round two, when Paul Geaney, still their most influential player in my estimation, uncharacteristically fluffed a last-minute effort at a 2-point score. They trailed 1-11 to 0-1 after 17 minutes but hauled themselves back from the brink. More of the same at Spa on Sunday last, where the local team looked set for their first win only to be denied by a late Dylan Geaney winning point, an agonising loss for Spa 2-17 to 1-21 for Dingle.
JUNIOR
Listry top their group unbeaten after yet another big win at home, 2-18 to Annascaul’s 0-11. They will be hell-bent on winning the Kerry Junior title that they should have won a few years ago, only to fall to yet another unbelievable longrange late point by David Clifford from the terrace side in Fitzgerald Stadium. Fossa went on to win the All-Ireland Junior Club title, while Listry, then managed by Kerry star Marc O’Shea, rues this loss. Buoyed by Kerry minor stars, Listry are emerging once more to win in Kerry and with their great plans for ground development on target, winning the All-Ireland would be a dream come true. However, as we have observed so often in the past, winning the Kerry title is often the biggest obstacle. Ask All-Ireland local winners in all grades: Dr Crokes, Desmonds, Laune Rangers, Fossa, and Beaufort: winning on the home patch
was very challenging. Currow have lost all 3 games in the Junior, including last weekend away to Piarsaigh na Dromoda 1-13 to 2-12

Following the above conclusion to round 1 group games, the position and fixtures are as follows. Dr Crokes (holders) received a bye to the semi-finals along with Na Gaeil as two of the three teams that topped their respective groups at senior level. The two winners of the groups of three teams, Na Gaeil and Austin Stacks, went into a draw for the other bye to the semi-finals, which Na Gaeil received. Rathmore have to play Austin Stacks in a quarter-final while the other quarter-final pairing is Kenmare Shamrocks against Milltown/Castlemaine. In the Intermediate, Ballymacelligott, last year’s county Premier Junior Championship winners, have reached the last eight and will be away to Kilcummin in their quarter-final. The visitors started the better scoring 3 goals inside the first 10 mins. To legions credit they battled hard and fought their way back into the game, helped in large by a well taken Aine Devlin goal. HT Legion 1-06 Ballymac 4-06. Ballymac got the first scores of the 2nd half with a brace of points but to our girls credit they did not lay down and fought their way back into the game. Goals from Aine Devlin, Eve Coffey and Aoife Healy reduced the deficit to 3, but the visitors responded
with some well taken points. We continued to press but couldn’t find another goal and Ballymac took the points on a final scoreline of Legion 4-09 Ballymac 4-14. Our minor boys made the long trip back to Tarbert to take on a very strong north Kerry side this evening. We started well and were in contention after 15 minutes when we trailed by 0-7 to 1-03 after a well worked team goal scored by Cian. However this seem to spark north Kerry into life and they took over to dominate the remainder of the half. They lead 3-15 to 1-3 at halftime. In fairness to our lads they battled really hard and never gave up against a powerful outfit in the second half.
Spa GAA SPA SUFFER NARROW DEFEAT: Spa suffered a narrow one-point defeat to Dingle in Round 3 of the Kerry Petroleum Senior Football Club Championship Group 1, going down 2-17 to 1-21 in a thrilling contest last weekend. Spa made an excellent start and played some fine, free-flowing football in the opening stages, before Dingle settled and began to edge ahead. A superb goal from Dara Moynihan, following a quick turnover and neat combination with David Spillane, helped Spa regain the lead, while an excellent two-pointer from Dan O’Donoghue kept the sides within touching distance. Dingle led 1-12 to 1-9 at half time. Dingle moved five points clear early in the second half, but Spa showed tremendous character to fight their way back into the game. Further scores from Dara Moynihan, Cian Murphy and Dan O’Donoghue, followed by a well-taken goal from Shane Cronin after good work from Moynihan and Spillane, brought the sides level. Joey McCarthy then put Spa ahead from a free, but Dingle quickly levelled before Dylan Geaney landed a decisive two-pointer with two minutes remaining. Spa pushed forward in search of a winner, with a late point from the resulting attack leaving just one between the sides, but the hooter sounded shortly afterwards. The result means Spa will now face a relegation play-off against the losers of Templenoe and An Ghaeltacht, with details to be confirmed. SPA U8 GIRLS: Our Spa U8 Girls had a fantastic second batch of Go Games, putting in some excellent performances against John Mitchels, Fossa, Scartaglen and Listowel Emmets. The team acquitted themselves brilliantly and continued to improve with every outing. Their performances are a great reflection of the
enthusiasm, effort and positive attitude they bring to training every Saturday.
Dr Crokes GAA SENIOR CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP: Dr. Crokes 0:16 Rathmore 0:12. We secured our place in the club championship semi-final following a hard-fought fourpoint victory over Rathmore. We made a strong start, with points from Cian McMahon and Evan Looney helping settle into the game. Cian McMahon was particularly influential from placed balls and added a superb two-pointer, while Micheál Burns and David Shaw also got on the scoresheet as we built a 0-11 to 0-07 lead at half-time. Rathmore came out strongly after the break and reduced the deficit, but we remained composed and continued to find scores. David Shaw, Cian McMahon and Micheál Burns all added points, before Tom Doyle registered late on to help secure the win. With Rathmore unable to close the gap, we finished strongly to run out 0-16 to 0-12 winners and, importantly, book our place in the club championship semi-final. SENIOR LADIES: Bon Secours Junior Premier County Championship Group 1 - Rd 2. Fossa Ladies produced a disciplined and hard-working display on the road to secure an impressive eight-point victory
over ISG, emerging deserved winners on a scoreline of 1-13 to 1-5 despite physically demanding conditions. Leading 1-8 to 0-3 at half-time, Fossa laid the foundations for victory with an energetic opening half, combining excellent defensive organisation with efficient scoring. While both sides competed fiercely throughout, Fossa consistently carried the greater attacking threat and were rewarded with a convincing win. The game was characterised by high intensity and strong defensive pressure from both teams. Fossa's work rate without the ball was particularly impressive, restricting ISG to just six scores over the course of the contest. At the other end, Fossa created a wealth of scoring opportunities and dominated possession from kick outs, allowing them to control key periods of the game. While there is still room to improve efficiency in front of goal, the volume of chances created highlighted their ability to repeatedly break through the ISG defence. Encouragingly, the scores were shared across the team.
Kilcummin GAA INTERMEDIATE CHAMPIONSHIP: Kilcummin 2-14 John Mitchels 0-19. In an entertaining game that went down to the last kick, we emerged victorious thanks to a massive two-pointer from Brendan Kealy in injury time. A victory that sees us win the group and earn a home game against Ballymac on Saturday at 5.30pm. We started brightly with a Kevin McCarthy point followed by a Philip O'Leary goal and led by 1-3 to 0-3 after 15 minutes. Mikey Casey and Philip O’Leary added points before Casey goaled following great work from Kevin McCarthy. We led 2-05 to 0-05 with ten minutes left but Mitchels added four points to leave us leading by just two points at half time. The second half was to prove very exciting with both teams exchanging scores throughout. After 10 minutes the sides were level again 2-07 to 0-13. Kevin McCarthy and Philip O’Leary pointed again to counter a Mitchels team that were now on top and playing well. Our defence was being stretched but held up well and further points from Jack Fogarty and Cian Foley saw the side’s level with 3 mins left. When Mitchels pointed a free after a breach we feared the worst but once again Brendan Kealy was our saviour after a mammoth kick that was greeted with sheer delight. Deerpark Pitch & Putt NATIONAL U16 STROKEPLAY AND INTER-COUNTY: If Ciara Lowe's win in Cunnigar for the club the previous Sunday was special in its own right, well another National Title coming six days later only increased the enormity of what has happened in the space of a short week! Six days after his own win in the Bruff U16 Scratch Cup, Fionn McMonagle won again at the Limerick course but this time it meant he was National U16 Boys Strokeplay Champion for doing so! He needed a nine-hole playoff to do it like two of the other three club members who have won this event in the last 15 years but he now stands alongside Creagh Courtney (2011), Conor McCarthy (2013) and Ben Kelliher (2024) in being a Eugene McCarthy Cup winner for the club. Fionn would then win silver with Kerry alongside both Aodhan O'Halloran and Daniel Quinlan as Tralee's Joey Blake made up the team as the club is proud of their efforts once more alongside Fionn O'Callaghan and Donnacha Slattery's participation on Saturday. A well done to our U16 Officers Michael Cronin and Niall O'Loughlin for their guidance over the summer as the year is far from over. Killarney RFC SENIOR MEN EDGED OUT BY NCW: Killarney RFC Senior Men continued their pre-season preparations with a very useful run-out against Newcastle West, with the visitors just edging a tight contest on a 21-19 scoreline. Killarney crossed for three tries, with Matt McAuliffe touching down and Gearoid Sugrue adding two more. Shane Morrissey and Gearoid Sugrue added the conversions. Although the result went the way of NCW, there was plenty for Killarney to take from the game, particularly the impact of five new senior caps who have moved up from the U18.5 boys squad. Congratulations to Ciaran Doody, Alex Sheahan, Paddy Moore, Shane Morrissey and Jack Donoghue on making the step into senior men's rugby. Their involvement is a great reflection of the club's underage pathway and the work being done across the age grades. SPORT NOTES encourages anyone interested in playing senior rugby this season to make contact through the club's social media channels. SENIOR WOMEN'S RUGBY RETURNS: Killarney RFC is delighted to see senior women's rugby returning, with the first senior women's training session taking place on Friday, August 28 at 7.30pm in Aghadoe, Killarney, V93 WK4V. The session is open to former players, returning players and anyone who would like to try rugby in a friendly and welcoming environment. No previous experience is needed. YOUTH AND GIRLS RUGBY: U14 boys training is back at Aghadoe for boys born in 2013 and 2014, with training continuing every Tuesday and Thursday at 7.00pm. The KICK U14 girls group also returns shortly, with training for girls born in 2013 and 2014 starting on Tuesday, September 1 from 7.00pm to 8.30pm at Aghadoe. All new players are welcome.
Killarney Valley AC WATSON: Killarney Valley High Jumper David Watson has been selected for the Irish U18 Development Team to compete at the Scottish Championships in Aberdeen in late August. David has put in years of dedicated training and has had an outstanding season winning National medals and hitting a personal best of 1.90m. David is the fourth KVAC athlete selected to represent their country in 2026 and is a proud achievement for himself and his family. ROAD: Killarney Valley road racers have been on fire lately with Brendan Joy winning the recent Rose 5k in Tralee with a time of 15m 14s. Meanwhile Conor Kissane was on the podium at the Jerry Kiernan Memorial 5k race in Listowel. TRAINING: Many of our training sessions have been scaled back recently to give members a break in the season but are due to resume shortly as we prepare for cross country season. Fossa Rowing Club BANTRY - ALL IRELANDS: Last weekend the club travelled en masse to the gorgeous town of Bantry in West Cork to partake in the Irish Coastal Rowing Federation All-Ireland Championships. We had 50 rowers taking part in races on Friday, Saturday and Sunday in 19 different crews in what promised to be a very busy weekend for the club. Action got underway early on Friday, where we had four crews take part in the first day of the bumper weekend. Our U16 Mixed race featured two very strong crews who rowed their hearts out in their heat, Then later in the day in race 19, we had 2 crews taking part in the Novice Mixed Final. This turned out to be a cracking race with our Novice
B crew fighting bravely to the finish line. Meanwhile our A Crew placed third after a trojan effort, winning the first club medals of the All-Ireland Championships weekend! Then on Saturday there was an early start with the action getting underway from 8am as crews descended on the marina for another action-packed day of racing. Our U16 girls got the action underway for Fossa where we had two crews entering, with the top 6 finishers making it into the final on Sunday. Both crews did the club so proud, with the A Crew qualifying for the final. Very well done to both crews! Then it was the turn of our Sprint ladies to hit the water. They did brilliant in a very closely fought race over the 800m. In race 14 we had our very own Alison Coffey represent the club in a composite crew - a masterclass! In race 20 our U18 mixed crew put on a heck of a show to put the other crews under pressure in the U18 Mixed Final. Another fantastic showing by this crew. In the final race with club representation, it was the turn of the U14 boys to hit the water in heat 2 of the U14 Boys. The boys finished very strongly and qualified for the U14 Boys Final on the Sunday, finishing a very busy but superb day of racing in Bantry. Again the action got underway at 8am, and the water was calm, no wind and conditions perfect for a days rowing. Little did we know the rain would roll in, and conditions stiffen as the day went on. First up it was the turn of our Pre-Veteran mixed crew to get the action underway. Another great display by this crew to get the day started. Then it was the turn of our Senior Mixed crew, who did themselves and the club very proud. Our U12 Girls were up next, in race 5 and they were superb. A huge congratulations to our youngest crew to take part, they were fantastic and really powered it home. U18 Boys were up next, and they had a strong showing in the water, in a very strong race. Our Novice ladies crew were next in Race 8, battling through a very tough competition. In race 9 our Novice men were up and brought home the silverware, winning Silver in a very tough race, as conditions started to become a bit choppier than earlier in the morning. A superb row by one and all and a huge congratulations! In Race 14 our U16 boys fought the bad conditions as the rain fell heavy, and the conditions deteriorated quickly. The lads did themselves and the club proud. In race 16 the Prevet Ladies battled the worsening conditions and put on a fantastic fight in their race. In race 19 our Veteran Mixed suffered a long delay in the cold and blustery conditions, behind the start line, putting on a fantastic row. Our U14 boys were in their final and put in a well fought display. In race 21 we saw our U16 girls take part in their final, having also qualified through their heat on Saturday. They rowed their hearts out in
the final and the whole club was so proud of them all. Our Intermediate ladies were up next and braved the worsening conditions to put in another mighty display. Well done, Ladies. Our final ladies crew then took to the water - our Junior Ladies Crew. Well done All. Our Junior men took part in the second last race of the day, another super effort as the lads contended with a crash and a lost steer! Finally it was the turn of our Senior Men who took on a hardy multiturn race and did the club very proud once more. A fantastic weekend in Bantry, topped off with some celebrations to top the weekend.
Killarney Salmon & Trout Angling Club COMPETITION: Our Annual Juvenile Competition was held this year on Lough Barfinnihy on Friday evening 21st of August. The night was ran in conjunction with Inland Fisheries Sponsorship Program for 2026 and their assistance and that of the local Fisheries team was greatly appreciated. Conditions were ideal for angling and testimony to that, nearly every single attending angler hooked a fish, many for the first time, which lead to much excitement along the shoreline on the night. The recipient of the Scruffy's Cup for 2026 was Shay Kelly on the night. There was a joint second place of Denis Leahy and Max Kennedy. In third spot we again had a tie, with Jack Duggan and Dara Kelly on the podium. We would also like to acknowledge the great ongoing support our juvenile outings get from Denis O Neill in O'Neill's of Plunkett Street, it’s great to have such committed local support. Many Thanks also to John O Callaghan for prize sponsorship on the night. The event could not take place of course without the ongoing commitment from parents and grandparents to take time out from their busy schedules to bring the kids along and let them experience angling with tuition available on the night from club members -Míle Buíochas le gach duine! On the senior competition front, it will probably come as no great surprise that we are postponing our Tom Bambury Memorial Competition, which was scheduled for Sunday the 30th of August, we will advise on a new date as soon as circumstances allow, given the water level conditions prevailing presently. Finally a quick word of Thanks to the personnel from both our own club and sister club Lough Lein Anglers that are presently engaged in maintenance of the Weigh In Shed at Ross. It’s a great facility to have and should be shortly looking its best once again.

Kilcummin Community Games CARLOW: Last weekend ‘Cairn Community Games National Finals’ took place in Carlow. Congratulations to all who represented both Kilcummin and Kerry. Siun O’Callaghan Competed in the U12 long jump; Charlie Jay Kelliher in the U12 long jump and Sinéad Coleman in the U14 80m hurdles. We are very proud of everyone who represented Kilcummin Community Games Events this year. Well done to all.
Kilcummin ILLEGAL DUMPING: A series of green waste fly-tipping of hedge clippings, trees, and green waste has recently taken place on the Bog Walks. We would like to bring it to the attention of those involved that this practice is strictly illegal under the Waste Management Acts and Litter Pollution Acts in Ireland. Even though garden clippings are "natural" materials, discarding them on a mountain or blanket bog constitutes fly-tipping and carries the exact same penalties as dumping household rubbish. Help protect our local environment by reporting any sightings or fly-tipping anonymously to Kerry County Council on 066 716 2000, the Environmental Hotline at 1800 326 228, or via email at environ@kerrycoco.ie. KILCUMMIN LADIES FOOTBALL CLUB: The Kilcummin Ladies Football Club annual used clothes collection will take place at the clubhouse on Friday, 25th September, from 7pm to 9pm; on Saturday, 26th, from 10am to 12 noon and Sunday the 27th, from 11am to 12:30pm.
