PAGESIX The August Festival at Killarney Racecourse got underway on Thursday as punters, families, and racing enthusiasts gathered for the opening day of the three-day fixture. The Ross Road venue welcomed large crowds for the opening GMIB Raceday, setting the tone for a weekend filled with sport, fashion, and live entertainment. The success of Thursday's opening card follows swift action by racecourse management earlier in the week to address a private water supply issue on the premises. Management was first alerted on Tuesday, August 11, to reports of illness among individuals who had attended a previous event at the venue. In response, officials immediately enacted safety protocols, notifying the Health Service Executive (HSE) and Uisce Éireann, while voluntarily closing the site as a precaution to facilitate a full review. A temporary boil water notice was put in place by the HSE specifically for the racecourse's internal, private water network. Uisce Éireann confirmed that the issue was isolated entirely to the private system on site and had no impact on the town's public drinking water supply, which remains fully compliant with reg-

To ensure absolute safety for racegoers, racecourse management worked in direct coordination with environmental health officers and public health authorities to implement extensive precautionary measures across the grounds. Water testing conducted during the week returned clean results, with follow-up testing confirming the safety of the venue prior to opening the gates for the festival. A racecourse spokesperson told the Killarney Advertiser that the health and wellbeing of patrons and visitors remained the top priority throughout, ensuring every necessary step was taken so the August Festival could proceed smoothly. With opening day drawing strong crowds and deliver exciting action on the track, attention now turns
to the remaining two days of the festival, which promise high-class racing and off-track entertainment. Friday’s action features the Kelliher's Toyota Raceday, bringing another competitive card to the track along with a lively evening atmosphere for fans. The three-day meeting reaches its climax on Saturday, with the highly anticipated Best Dressed Day, proudly sponsored by Irish online fashion boutique Canella Lane. The glamourous event will see guest judges Caoimhe McGinley and Michelle Fitzpatrick lead the search for the most stylish racegoers. McGinley, a motherof-four and digital creator, and Fitzpatrick, a respected fashion stylist specialising in contemporary looks, will evaluate
the entries throughout the afternoon. Top prizes are up for grabs for the most stylish lady and gentleman, including luxury trips to European fashion capitals Paris and Milan. Beyond the fashion and the track action, Saturday's finale will feature extensive live entertainment. Traditional music group The Byrne Brothers, freshly returned from a tour of the United States alongside The High Kings, are set to headline the official after-party, bringing their energetic performance to the Killarney venue. Gates open at 12.00pm on Saturday, with the first race scheduled for 1.25pm. Tickets and full programme information remain available through the official racecourse website.

New seating unveiled as Spa GAA celebrates It has been a busy period at Spa GAA as the club continues to develop its ground facilities while also marking a major milestone in its sporting history.
Main Street closes September 1 as public realm project resumes Main Street in Killarney will close to traffic on Tuesday, September 1, as major public realm enhancement works recommence following the planned summer pause. The street, running from Kenmare Place to Plunkett Street, had been temporarily resurfaced with bitumen and reopened for July and August to accommodate peak tourist traffic and local business trading. That interim pause now comes to an end as contractors prepare to return to the site to begin laying new granite paving. The road will remain closed to vehicular traffic through to late February, when the entire public realm project is scheduled for completion. The overall timeline was adjusted earlier this year following unexpected delays caused by complex underground utilities and global material
supply issues. To reduce the impact on local trade during the autumn and winter months, the remaining construction will take place on a phased basis. Sections of the street will gradually reopen to pedestrians as paving work progresses. Specific plans are also in place to ensure the junction of Main Street and Plunkett Street reopens to vehicles in time for the annual Christmas in Killarney Parades. The Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce continues to liaise directly with Kerry County Council on behalf of town centre traders throughout the construction period.
The club recently completed further ground improvements with the installation of new seating on the clubhouse side of the pitch. Located over the terrace area directly on the halfway line, the new seating offers an upgraded viewing area for spectators. Club volunteer John Hannon of JH Fitout Ltd, who also coaches the Under 10 boys team, assisted with the installation work. Alongside the developments on the pitch, over 100 people gathered for the club's annual mass, which was celebrated by Club President Fr Tim O'Sullivan and Club Vice President Fr Michael O'Donoghue. Following the service, Spa GAA held
a special presentation to honour the 60th anniversary of the 1966 O'Donoghue Cup winning team. All surviving members of the historic side attended the gathering, alongside family representatives of deceased players and team mentors. The evening provided a chance for the club community to come together, reflect on past successes, and share memories of one of the most famous teams in Spa GAA history.
HeartBeat to host talk on hearing loss and cognitive health Cardiac support group HeartBeat Killarney will host an informative public meeting on Tuesday, August 25, focusing on hearing health and its links to cognitive wellbeing. The event takes place at 8.00pm in the Parish Centre on Park Road. Hearing Aid Audiologist John O’Mahoney will present on hearing loss and its potential connection with Alzheimer’s disease. The session will include live demonstrations of assistive listening devices, such as remote microphones and television listening aids designed to improve speech clarity.
A guest speaker from the Alzheimer Society of Ireland will also address the meeting, outlining the early signs of Alzheimer’s and offering practical advice on what to watch for in oneself or family members. A question and answer session will follow the talks, with refreshments served afterwards. Anyone seeking further details can contact John directly by email at john@islandhearingsuite.ie. Organisers also remind members and the public that the HeartBeat café is open every week, having welcomed visitors as normal on Wednesday of this week.
Final Spraoi Chiarraí concert at St Mary's this Saturday Youth traditional arts collective Spraoi Chiarraí will bring its 21st summer season to a close with a final free performance this weekend. The fifth and final event in the summer series takes place on Saturday, August 22, at 8.00pm in St Mary’s Church of Ireland, located opposite the Town Hall. The upcoming concert features the group Afro Trad Ireland, bringing together Ugandan vocalist and percussionist Samuel Kiwanuka, guest Beaufort singer-songwriter Fiona Doyle, and longstanding professional folk musician and project director Tim O’Shea. The mentorship initiative provides young local Kerry performers with valuable
stage experience in historic local venues. Throughout the summer, the series has showcased fiddle, harp, accordion, flute, uilleann pipes, bodhrán, and vocals. The free family concert series is supported by the Kerry County Council Arts Office through the Arts Act and Community Support Funds, alongside the Killarney Chamber of Commerce and Tourism, Kerry Gems Publishing, St Mary's Church of Ireland, and Killarney House and Gardens. Organisers welcome locals and visitors alike to attend the final performance of the season. Further details are available from Tim O'Shea on 087 2814550 or online at timosheaandfriends.com.
FRANCISZEK JAKUBOWSKI CONTINUES WINNING STREAK: Local Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu athlete Franciszek Jakubowski has secured another title, claiming gold at the ADCC tournament in Athlone. The victory follows his recent triumph at NAGA Ireland, where the 17-year-old St Brendan's College student fought through his division to win a gold medal and championship belt. Training locally at BJJ Killarney, the Fifth Year student has built a strong record on both the national and international circuits. He credits his ongoing progress and tournament preparation to the guidance of his coach alongside his older brother, Filip.

TOWN TALK Town centre spectacle to end summer in style The town centre is set to play host to a vibrant street spectacle this weekend as West Kerry performance group MOTHÚ returns to mark the end of the summer season. Taking place on Saturday, August 22, the free outdoor event will feature giant puppets, fire dancers, musicians, and lantern displays, bringing music, magic, and theatrical performance directly to the heart of the town. The production, titled The Seeker or An Cuardaitheoir, draws inspiration from the writings of renowned 20th-century Irish language poet Seán Ó Ríordáin. The performance explores themes of the soul, isolation, and rebirth, bringing the poet's work to life through large-scale creative arts. MOTHÚ is well known to local audiences following previous acclaimed street performances in Killarney, including Peig Mór and Aisling Ghobnait.

HSE to host a series of free planning evenings HSE South West will run two free public information evenings in the area to help local residents and families plan for their future health and care needs. The 'Plan Today For Peace of Mind Tomorrow' sessions take place at the RDI Hub on Killarney Road, Killorglin, on Tuesday, September 15, and at the Killarney Heights Hotel on Tuesday, October 20. Both events start at 8.00pm. Delivered under the HSE’s Caring for Kerry campaign alongside SAGE Advocacy and Healthy Age Friendly Homes, the initiative provides practical advice on living
safely and independently at home. The sessions will cover navigating local health services, making homes age-friendly, setting up Enduring Power of Attorney, and understanding the Fair Deal nursing home scheme. "We want to support people in Kerry to make informed choices about their future so they can enjoy peace of mind," said Hannah Healy, General Manager IHA Kerry at HSE South West. "These free sessions will give families trusted information on how to access local services and understand their rights." Both events are open to all with no advance booking required.
The spectacle will begin at Market Cross at 8.45pm, with the performance leading a parade through Main Street before finishing in College Square. Organisers expect a large turnout for the free family event and recommend that attendees arrive early to secure a good viewing spot along the route.
New singing group launches in Killarney A new adult singing group, 'SING Killarney', is launching this month, offering locals a informal community singalong with no requirement to live in the town. Founded by Tom and Breda O’Shea, the group has joined forces with local musician Ben Quinlan, who will lead the weekly sessions. The group focuses on popular music across all genres in an informal setting. "SING Killarney is not a choir, we are essentially a weekly community singalong where there is no pressure and no expectation to be perfect," said founder Tom
O’Shea. "Song sheets will be provided and can be used each week. Our focus is on connection, not perfection." The group meets every Wednesday evening at the Presentation Monastery School on New Road, Killarney. The initial five-week term starts on August 26, with registration taking place from 7.45pm and singing from 8.00pm. The cost for the five-week term is €25. Due to limited space and high demand, pre-registration is recommended. Interested singers can find further details on the SING Killarney Facebook page or by contacting Tom O'Shea directly on 087 290 2147.

driving force behind the weekly fundraising lotto. Society President Matt O’Neill recalled Malachy’s remarkable lifelong commitment to the black and amber and his deep connection to the club community. His daughter, Stephanie Quirke, also spoke warmly of her late father and what Dr Crokes meant to him throughout his life.

Ross Castle tours a hit with locals The Office of Public Works (OPW) hosted a weekend of free events at Ross Castle on August 15 and 16 to mark the start of National Heritage Week. On Saturday, OPW guide Conal Guilfoyle led a walking tour of Ross Island, sharing insights into the area's natural history and its copper mining heritage. The following day, guide Noreen Brosnan hosted a talk covering the history of Ross Castle, detailing the lives of former residents. She
then led attendees to the nearby Ross Cottage ruins to explore its origins. Both tours drew strong attendances across the weekend. Local attendee John Fitzgerald, who went to both events, praised the initiative: "I had only intended to go on Saturday, but it was so interesting that I made plans to also attend the Sunday event," he said. "The OPW deserve great credit for making their guides available, who made the events so interesting and informative."

Watson earns Ireland Invasive water high jump selection
lily threatens Lough Leane
Environmental group Lochanna Beo has raised concerns over large carpets of the invasive Fringed Water Lily proliferating along the shoreline of Ross Bay and Bog Island on Lough Leane. The plant, known scientifically as Nymphoides peltata, is an invasive aquatic species listed under European Communities regulations. It thrives in nutrient-rich, eutrophic waters caused by high levels of nitrogen and phosphorus from fertilizers and wastewater discharge. Identified by its five vibrant yellow fringed petals, the perennial plant roots at the lake bed with long stems reaching the surface. Late in the season, seeds form floating chains that spread across the water, while boat traffic can also unintentionally disperse seeds to new areas. The dense mats are currently impacting local boatmen by entangling engine propellers. The National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) has urged watercraft
Killarney Valley AC athlete David Watson has been selected to represent Ireland at an international track and field meet in Aberdeen, Scotland, at the end of August. The high jumper holds a personal best of 1.90m and continues to make steady progress under club coaches Alan Del-
aney and Tim Horgan. Club coaches expect him to challenge the 2m mark over the coming year as his development continues. Killarney Valley AC committee members and volunteers extended their congratulations to Watson following his first international call-up.
operators to avoid driving through the weed mats and reminds lake users to follow the "Check, Clean, Dry" protocol for all vessels. Lochanna Beo spokesperson Valerie Harrington warned that the plant threatens to disrupt the lake's ecosystem and food web, pointing to wider water quality issues. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has highlighted that Lough Leane is failing to meet Water Framework Directive targets, citing excess nutrients from the Killarney wastewater treatment plant as a key factor. Despite the facility being placed on the EPA Priority Areas List, recent parliamentary responses indicate no upgrade work is scheduled before 2030.

There is also strong representation in

Order of Malta Canine club's annual show a huge success assists nursing unit transfer Volunteers from the Killarney branch of the Order of Malta assisted with the transfer of residents from the District Hospital and St Columbanus Home to the new Killarney Community Nursing Unit on Lewis Road this week. Order of Malta volunteers joined forces with the Irish Red Cross and the National Ambulance Service under the direction of the Cork/Kerry regional ambulance coordinator to manage the patient moves. Long-serving Order of Malta volunteer Michael 'Bunny' Fleming paid tribute to the healthcare teams involved in relocating the residents to the modern Lewis Road facility. "I had the pleasure of transferring the residents of both St Columbanus Home and District Hospital to the new Killarney Community Nursing Unit," Fleming said. "I would like to commend the nursing staff, care assistants, and catering staff for their compassion, respect, and care in the smooth transfer of all the residents." Fleming highlighted the teamwork shown across the various voluntary and emergency services throughout the operation.
Independent councillor Martin Grady has commended organisers and participants following the Killarney and District Canine Club's 43rd Annual All Breed Championship Show.
The event brought together dog owners, breeders, and enthusiasts from across Ireland and abroad for a day of competition in Killarney. The annual show remains a major fixture on the local summer calendar, drawing international competitors and spectators to the town. Councillor Grady paid tribute to the hard work required to host the event each year. "It was a pleasure to attend the Killarney and District Canine Club’s 43rd Annual All Breed Championship Show in Killarney," Cllr Grady said. "This wonderful annual event continues to be a great success, bringing together dog owners, breeders and enthusiasts from across Ire-
land and overseas." He also extended his appreciation to the broader support network behind the championship. "I would like to congratulate and thank the club organisers and committee for the tremendous work that goes into making the show such a success each year," he added. "My thanks also to the judges for giving their time and expertise, and to all the sponsors whose generous support helps make the event possible." Grady concluded by praising the competitors who made the journey to Kerry. "Well done to all those competing, who travelled from across Ireland and overseas to take part. Your participation and commitment are a huge part of what makes this event such a success. Congratulations to everyone involved in continuing this proud 43-year tradition in Killarney, and best wishes to the Killarney and District Canine Club for many more successful years ahead."
"I saw at first hand the dedication and loving care shown to each resident," he added. "The staff, both male and female, are true heroes and deserve our acknowledgement and appreciation. Together with my colleagues from the Killarney Order of Malta, we were happy to assist."
Deenagh Lodge to host Alzheimer’s Memory Walk Killarney National Park will serve as the venue for this year's Kerry Alzheimer's Memory Walk on Sunday, September 20. Participants will gather at the Deenagh Lodge ahead of an 11.00am start to complete a 5km scenic route through the park. The event takes place on the eve of World Alzheimer's Day as part of
a nationwide series of walks supported by Aviva. Now in its seventh year, the initiative raises vital funds for The Alzheimer Society of Ireland to support local dementia services, including daycare centres, family carer training, social clubs, dementia cafés, and the national helpline. Last year, nearly 3,000 walkers across Ireland raised over €240,000 for the cause.
The Kerry walk will be led by local champions Kathriona Sheehan, Niamh Murphy, Lynda Phillips, and Melissa Molyneaux, who are walking in support of all those living with dementia. "We are proud to lead our annual Alzheimer’s Memory Walk supported by Aviva to help fund local dementia services in Kerry," they said. "The event is about community and helping spread
awareness by walking together to raise vital funds for care, support, and hope for the days ahead. Join us in Killarney on Sunday, 20th September to show your support." With over 40 walks scheduled across Ireland, members of the public can walk in memory of a loved one or to show solidarity. Further details and registration are available at memorywalk.ie.

Caoimhe Lynch’s memorable week as Kerry Rose Killarney’s own Caoimhe Lynch took centre stage as the 2026 Kerry Rose during a busy Rose of Tralee festival week. The 28-year-old secondary school chaplain and English teacher, who grew up on Mill Road in Killarney before her family moved to Beaufort, represented her home county across a wide range of official engagements. Her festival journey began on the annual Rose Tour, visiting community landmarks across Kerry and meeting local supporters. The week also featured traditional midnight parades along Denny Street, where crowds gathered late into the night. On stage at the Kerry Sports Academy dome at MTU during Tuesday's live television broadcast, Lynch shared her personal story with host Kathryn Thomas.
She spoke about her early years on Mill Road, her time with Killarney Musical Society, and her community activism work through The Light House Project, a voluntary initiative she founded to support people facing social challenges. Taking to the stage for her party piece, Lynch showed complete professionalism when her guitar strap snapped just as she began her song. Unfazed, she reset and delivered a powerful performance that won over the audience. Despite her current teaching career in Dublin, her strong Killarney roots remained central throughout her week in the spotlight. All photos: Domnick Walsh

Spa and salon conference scheduled for early 2027 Killarney has secured a major boost for its winter tourism season, as international salon software company Phorest officially announced that its annual flagship event, the Phorest Summit, will relocate to the town in January 2027.
Gleneagle Band's recruitment drive for new members
The Gleneagle Concert Band is inviting new members of all ages to join the ensemble as it prepares for its new season starting this September.
Open to children, young people, and adults from Killarney and surrounding areas, the band offers specialist instrumental tuition starting from age nine. Beginners can take lessons in clarinet, flute, saxophone, trumpet, trombone, French horn, euphonium, tuba, percussion, and drums before progressing into the main band. No previous experience is required for adults or children. The band also welcomes adults who already play an instrument or wish to return to music after a break. "What makes Gleneagle special is that our musicians don't just rehearse in a room and play the occasional concert," said Music Development Officer Vincent Condon. "They perform at major events, festivals and community occasions, take part in film productions, travel internationally and, importantly, have fun together as a band. The band is open to everyone. We welcome young people who want to learn an instrument, as well as adults who have previous musical experience and would like to return to playing."
For information on registration and lessons, contact 087 222 9513 or visit the band's social media pages.
BUSY SUMMER OF EVENTS
The Gleneagle Concert Band has concluded a busy 12 months featuring public performances, festival appearances, and charity work. Highlights included the annual summer street concerts in Killarney town, along with performances at Puck Fair, the Rose of Tralee, and the Summer in Killarney Festival. Band members were also involved in the filming of Jimmy, an upcoming Hollywood biographical drama based on actor Jimmy Stewart. Community fundraising remained a focus over the past year, with the band supporting local causes including the Kerry Stars Special Olympics Sports Club and Recovery Haven Kerry Cancer Support House alongside a sold-out Annual Concert. Following a tour to Seville in 2025, the band has confirmed its next overseas trip to Bilbao and San Sebastián in northern Spain, scheduled for August 2027.
Following ten consecutive years in Dublin, the 11th annual summit will bring hundreds of salon, spa, and clinic owners from Europe, North America, and Australia to the Gleneagle Arena on January 24 and January 25, 2027. The two-day global conference features keynotes, practical business workshops, and networking events designed to share actionable growth strategies, leadership frameworks, and artificial intelligence integration for wellness professionals. As part of Phorest's B Corp commitments, the event organisers are collaborating with local venues, entertainment providers, and suppliers across Killarney to keep event spending within the local economy. Local businesses involved include hospitality and entertainment providers such as J.M. Reidy’s, The Laurels, The Grand, 1Image Photography, Killarney Photo Booth Hire, Reel Irish Dance Entertainment, and the Gleneagle Arena. "In my view, becoming a B Corp doesn't make Phorest exceptional," said Ronan
Perceval, Founder and CEO of Phorest. "My hope is that this level of accountability and long-term thinking becomes the standard our entire industry holds itself to. Sourcing locally ensures that local businesses gain benefits from an internationally attended event landing in their locality." The arrival of the summit offers an economic boost during a traditionally quieter period for the town. On the opening evening of Sunday, January 24, attendees will take part in a 'Town Takeover', with Phorest hosting guests across three historic venues on Main Street: J.M. Reidy’s, The Laurels, and The Grand. The evening will feature live traditional Irish music, local food, and entertainment, with complimentary shuttle buses connecting the Gleneagle Arena to the town centre. The conference will conclude on Monday night, January 25, with an after-party held at the Gleneagle Arena.

Chamber takes business outdoors Killarney Chamber of Tourism & Commerce members took business outdoors on Wednesday last, with an informal networking walk through Killarney National Park offering a unique opportunity to connect while exploring some of the area’s rich history and heritage.
Coffee cups in hand – reusable ones, naturally – Chamber members and guests gathered for a walking tour with a difference, guided by local historian Jerry O'Grady. His deep knowledge of Killarney's historic homes and estates turned a stroll through the Park into a journey back through time. From grand estate houses to the stories of the families who shaped them, O'Grady's insight gave members a fresh appreciation of the landscape many pass through every day. The morning
Murnane secures top US athletics scholarship Killarney Valley AC middle-distance runner Maria Murnane has secured a prestigious athletics scholarship to McNeese State University in Louisiana. The teenager, who competes over 800m and 1500m on the track as well as in cross-country, has arrived in the United States to begin her collegiate career. She joins clubmate Mollie O'Riordan, who is entering her third year at the same university. Murnane is coached in Killarney by distance coach Con Lynch, who expressed his delight at her progress. The club's committee and coaching staff extended
their congratulations to Maria and her parents, Mairéad and James Murnane. Her scholarship comes on the back of a strong showing for Killarney Valley AC in the Premier Division final of the National League, where Murnane held her own against top senior athletes in both the 800m and 1500m. The club's women's and men's teams placed fifth and sixth overall in Ireland. Several other Killarney Valley AC athletes are also competing in the US system, including Jack O'Leary at East Tennessee State University and Oisín Lynch, who transferred to La Salle University in Philadelphia from Adams State College in Colorado this summer.
stayed dry, allowing everyone to enjoy the walk, with conversations on business and local issues continuing along the way. The Chamber was also delighted to welcome a very special guest to Killarney for the occasion: Kara Newport, President and Chief Executive Officer of Fioli, the historic estate and botanical garden in California. Newport's visit forms part of ongoing research into the fascinating connections between Muckross Estate and Filoli – two properties separated by
an ocean, yet linked by shared stories of stewardship, heritage and landscape. Her presence added a truly international dimension to the morning. Killarney Chamber of Tourism & Commerce continues to bring members together in new and engaging ways throughout the year, combining business networking with opportunities to experience and celebrate the very best of what Killarney has to offer – this month, quite literally, on its own doorstep.

Scouts in action at the national Phoenix Challenge
Scouts from the 6th Kerry Killarney Scout Group travelled to County Cavan last week to test their teamwork, leadership, and outdoor skills at Scouting Ireland's annual Phoenix Challenge. Held from August 13 to 16 at the Castle Saunderson International Scout Centre, the four-day event is recognized as the largest annual scouting competition in Ireland, bringing together patrols from across the island. This year's event took inspiration from legendary Kerry explorer Tom Crean, operating under the theme "Tom Crean and the Lost Journal". Participating scouts undertook a range of challenges designed around Crean's Antarctic expeditions. Over the four days, the Killarney scouts constructed and managed their own campsites, took part in outdoor cooking, completed practical scoutcraft tasks, and participated in environmental initiatives. The event schedule also included an Ant-
arctic Trade Fair, the traditional Phoenix Campfire, and a Trek Cart Race. In total, 16 scouts represented Kerry at the competition, with members from the 14th Kerry Killorglin Scout Group also taking part alongside the Killarney patrol. Scouting Ireland CEO Seán Sheehan commended the young participants for their efforts over the weekend. "The Phoenix Challenge showcases scouting at its best; young people from across Ireland come together to challenge themselves, work as a team and demonstrate the practical and leadership skills they have learned throughout the year," he said. "This year's Tom Crean-inspired theme encouraged participants to embrace adventure, resilience and exploration."
The awards, which celebrate Irish writing across stage, screen, and audio, take place at Dublin's Light House Cinema on September 3, hosted by Tara Flynn. Castlegregory-based Keogan is shortlisted in the Best TV Drama Script category for her work on Trespasses (Episode 4). She adapted the script for Channel 4 from Louise Kennedy’s acclaimed novel. She is nominated alongside writers for Hidden Assets and Mix Tape. The Zebbie Awards are voted on exclusively by Writers’ Guild members and are named in memory of Broadway and Hollywood actor O.Z. ‘Zebby’ Whitehead. WGI Chair Jennifer Davidson highlighted the importance of acknowledging screenwriters, noting that no film or television series can exist without the script at its heart.
Ladybirds begin annual recruitment drive The Killarney Ladybirds are opening their waitlist for September registration as they prepare to welcome new members for the upcoming school year.
Part of the Irish Girl Guides, the Ladybirds group is aimed at young girls aged 5 to 7. Meetings take place every Monday from 6pm to 7pm during the school year, giving members the opportunity to earn badges, learn new skills, make friends, and build confidence. Throughout the year, the group takes
part in various outdoor outings and community events. Previous activities for the Killarney unit have included a hike at the Blue Pool, taking part in the Killarney St Patrick's Day Parade, visits to Sandy Feet Farm, outdoor scavenger hunts, and local fundraising initiatives. As members grow, they have the option to progress into Brownies and Guides within the Irish Girl Guides organisation. Parents wishing to register their child on the waitlist for September can do so online at bit.ly/Ladybirds2026 o by scanning the QR code.

Newly crowned Rose of Tralee inspires the nation The 2026 International Rose of Tralee was announced on Tuesday night, with Caoilfhinn Ní Choiligh taking the crown for Westmeath. She is the second Westmeath Rose to win the prestigious title. Caoilfhinn is 25 years old and lost her hair to alopecia at the age of 15. Her story inspired the nation as she bravely took off her wig on Monday night. She decided to turn her experi-
ence into something meaningful and is currently studying to be a wig maker alongside working in retail. Her decision to be so open about her journey was widely praised, with many viewers describing her as an inspiring and empowering figure for people living with hair loss. The Rose of Tralee is one of Ireland’s best-known annual events, bringing together women from communities across Ireland and from Irish communities around the world. The
festival celebrates Irish culture, personality, community and the individual stories of each Rose. Her win marks the beginning of a new chapter for the 25-year-old, who has already used her experience to inspire others. As the 2026 Rose of Tralee, she will have the opportunity to continue raising awareness of alopecia while embracing the many responsibilities that come with the title. Photo: Domnick Walsh

Galway, the new presenter will work closely with the Cúla4 team to connect with audiences, guide viewers towards Cúla4 content and represent Cúla4 at public and community events. Applications close at 4.00pm on Monday, 7 September 2026. Applicants should send a CV, cover letter and a sample video showcasing their presenting skills to cv@tg4.ie.
Mrs Brown cancelled for 2026 Brendan O’Carroll, founder of the popular television series Mrs Browns Boys, has announced that the 2026 recordings of the shows Christmas and New Year’s Specials have been cancelled due to an unexpected medical issue. Mr O’Carroll said that following a CT scan, it was found that he had two fractures in his mandible (jaw) which required immediate surgery and a few months recovery. He confirmed he is in talks with the BBC about getting Mrs Brown’s Boys back on the screen in 2027. This also means that he has had to postpone both the 3 Arena
Dublin and Gleneagle Arena Shows Mrs Brown’s Boys D’Panto which were scheduled for later this year. Speaking about the decision, he said: “It not been taken lightly and has been made on medical advice from my consultant. To say I am heartbroken is an absolute understatement. I would like to sincerely apologise to all our fans who were looking forward to seeing the shows and for any disappointment caused.” Mrs Brown's Boys gained huge popularity across Ireland and the UK when it first aired on television back in 2011, and their Christmas and New Years specials are a staple in Irish households at Christmas time.

Network Ireland Kerry hosts event in Tralee Network Ireland Kerry hosted an event for their members to create connection, inspiration and conversation. Muirine Hurley, the 1994 International Rose of Tralee, attended the event sharing her inspiring story of reislence, reinvention and courage to embrace a new life chapter.
New face to join Three Amigos Gary Gamble has been confirmed as the newest member of the Three Amigos, replacing Jimmy Buckley in the band. The news comes following a reported rift between band members Jimmy Buckley, Patrick Feeney and Robert Mizzell, after their January tour was cancelled. Patrick Feeney released a statement on Facebook during the week to clear up rumours about a rift in the band. He said he had “no choice” but to “explain our side of what happened and set the record straight”. Feeney said tensions had been growing within the Three Amigos after their manager took over the management of Jimmy Buckley. He explained that both he and Robert Mizzell had concerns that this could create a potential conflict of interest but were told the arrangement was necessary to keep the Three Amigos together. Patrick continued that he was contacted two weeks ago by their manager after Jimmy was unhappy that Feeney was hosting a 2027 Spanish trip titled “Feeney’s Fun in
the Sun”. According to Feeney, Buckley was prepared to walk away from the Three Amigos tour if the event went ahead, as both events were due to use the same hotel. Feeney said: “I tried to explain that finding a suitable hotel in Spain that ticks all the boxes for an event like ours is extremely difficult. I also could not understand the objection, particularly as other artists use the same hotel and my trip was taking place in a different month. He added that “Feeney’s Fun in the Sun” was completely separate from the Three Amigos, saying it was something he had “worked extremely hard to build over the years” and that, “like everyone in this business, I have to make a living”. Feeney said that despite efforts to resolve the situation, the tour was ultimately cancelled. He claimed that he and Robert Mizzell had requested that no statement be issued about the dispute but said one was released regardless. The pair have now moved forward with Gary Gamble joining the group as they look to continue the Three Amigos without Jimmy Buckley.
Speaking after the event, Aisling Foley, President of Network Ireland Kerry, said: “Our Coffee, Conversation & Courage event really captured what Network Ireland Kerry is all about. Muirne’s story was incredibly inspiring and emotional, but just as important was the opportunity for women to come together, share experiences and support one another. Our theme for 2026 is Connections, Courage and Community, and this morning
brought all three to life.” The event was held in collaboration with Kerry Innovation Centre, with Bríd McElligott, Chairperson of Kerry Innovation Centre, also welcoming the opportunity to work with Network Ireland Kerry. A special moment during the morning was a presentation to Eibhlin Henggeler, recognising the contribution she and her family have made to Tralee and the wider community over many years. A piece by renowned Kerry artist Brian de Staic, symbolising CARA – friendship, was presented to Eibhlin on behalf of Kerry Innovation Centre and Network Ireland Kerry. The presentation reflected the Irish saying “Ní neart go cur le chéile” – There is no strength without unity, and acknowledged Eibhlin’s commitment to the community and her role as a positive example of women in business and leadership.
Network Ireland Kerry and the Kerry Innovation Centre hosted ‘Coffee, Conversation & Connection’ at The Rose Hotel, Tralee on Tuesday (August 18th) where the 1994 International Rose of Tralee, Muirne Hurley, shared her personal journey of resilience, reinvention and ‘The Courage to Begin Again’. 2026 Leaving Certificate results being released today Today is a big day for Irish students. Young people across the country will get their results for the Leaving Certificate, which will determine which path they take. Results are released online meaning that students do not have to go to the school, which was a tradition in the past. Students who are unhappy with their results can appeal them online, which will cost €40 per subject. For many students, today marks the end of years of hard work, study and preparation. While receiving the results can be an exciting
moment, it can also be a stressful and emotional day, particularly for those who are unsure about their next steps. The results will play an important role in the CAO process, with students receiving their first-round offers in the coming weeks. However, students are being reminded that their Leaving Certificate results doesn’t define their future. There are several different routes available to those who may not achieve the points or grades they had hoped for, including further education, apprenticeships and alternative college courses.

STORY
21.08.2026 The build-up to match day was intense. The town was wrapped in a restless energy that everyone channelled into making Killarney look spectacular for the weekend. Green and gold flags and bunting went up on all the main thoroughfares, pickets and signs with good luck messages to the team appeared on every corner. The Advertiser even released a special edition in green, with a whole section dedicated to local businesses wishing the team good luck.
MATCH DAY
A weekly series from Killarney Advertiser's Jess Jukes
Jack picked Felicity and Auntie Sheila up for the match on Sunday morning, all adorned in green and gold. Felicity hadn’t owned her own Kerry jersey much to Jack’s dismay, so she ended up in his old jersey. He claimed she couldn’t turn up to represent what he insisted was her home county without the proper uniform. Fitzgerald Stadium was packed with people. The sun shone down on the masses as everyone was clambering for seats. Felicity almost lost Auntie Sheila and Jack multiple times in the undulating sea of green and gold. They both looked slightly feral in their match day uniforms – jerseys, caps, and scarves, with wild smiles on their faces. Jack had even gone so far as to have a small Kerry flag painted on his cheek. The atmosphere was fun and playful with little crowds of people bantering back and forth. The trio got settled, and were soon sucked into the match. Felicity was enamoured. The cheering, the tense moments, and the general hustle and bustle made the experience one-of-a-kind. Following everything was difficult at first, but she soon got used to it. The entire experience was invigorating. At half time, Felicity felt a strange tickle on the back of her neck. She turned her eyes away from the pitch to the stands, scanning them briefly. She caught sight of a man half blending in, not paying enough attention to the game to be a regular supporter. He wore a dark green hooded jumper, and Felicity couldn’t make out any of his features. He wove through the crowd, dodging elbows as he went. He moved with purpose, and every so often she saw him glance her way. It was like he was looking specifically for her but didn’t want her to notice. A Kerry player scored a goal, and Felicity lost sight of the man as fans swarmed like a hive of bees. They crowd were on the edge of their seats and the buzz was contagious, yet Felicity retained the feeling of being watched. She saw the strange man again a few times, but was never able to keep her eyes on him for more than a minute, what with the ever-changing crowd. After watching him for longer, Felicity decided he seemed to be slowly making his way towards where she, Jack and Auntie Sheila sat. There was overwhelming roar, and
Felicity tuned back in only to realise that Cork had won the match. Whilst the Kerry fans were disappointed, the mood was still jolly. Auntie Sheila grabbed her hand as people flowed out of the stadium toward their cars. Felicity completely lost track of the strange man as they were swept down towards Jack’s car. Jack was beside himself with excitement. “Wasn’t that incredible? The whole stadium was on tenterhooks! We never really knew which way it was going to go!” Felicity hummed her agreement as she put on her seatbelt. Out of the corner of her eye she saw the figure that had been haunting her get into a sleek black car of his own. Felicity lost him again as Jack pulled away from the stadium, and found herself praying that the stranger wouldn’t follow them. On the drive into town Auntie Sheila and Jack were recounting the match, almost beat for beat. “It was always going to come down to Kerry and Cork,” Auntie Sheila said, “How could it not? It’s a classic.” “Mm, at least it wasn’t Dublin,” Jack said cheekily, glancing at Felicity in the rearview mirror with a grin on his face. She sighed dramatically before laughing along with everyone else in the car. Once the laughter quietened, Auntie Sheila posed another idea. “You know what we should do before you go home? Spend some time in the National Park. That’s something truly unique to Killarney.” Felicity agreed. “I’d love that.” “That’s settled then. We’ll go to the National Park, and we can go out for dinner afterwards. You’re welcome to join us too, Jack.” “That’d be nice,” Jack said. “I know my Da wants me to do more work in the ice cream truck, so I’ll have to check in with him first.”
IN KILLARNEY TOWN
Before long Jack pulled into the Glebe car park, only having to circle it twice before he found a parking space. It was a wonder they were able to enter the car park in the first place with how many people crowded around College Street. Auntie Sheila hopped out to get a parking ticket, and Jack turned around to face where Felicity was sitting in the back seat. “Alright, what’s up with you?” he asked. “You were distracted for the entire second half of the game. You hardly even reacted when we were hammered by Cork!” Felicity didn’t answer him. Instead she was watching the taxi rank, where to her horror she saw the green-hooded man staring directly at her. She could have sworn that he sneered at her before he turned and melted into the crowd, disappearing from view. Tune in next week to see what happens ...

Will e-scooters need to be registered and licensed from September? The Government have indicated that every e-scooter in the country will need to be registered from this September. New proposals making Hi-Viz jackets and helmets mandatory and extending a ban to under 18s are currently with the cabinet for sign off. The move to a registration and licensing system would in effect treat e-scooters as a mechanically propelled vehicle under the road traffic acts. Insurance Ireland, the representative organisation for most Irish registered insurers said it was “not aware of any insurers intending to offer motor insurance policies to users of e-scooters covering their lia-
bility to third parties should insurance become a legal requirement. The priority should be ensuring that the existing framework is clear, enforceable and supported by appropriate garda powers” In an interview with the Sunday Independent, Junior Transport Minister Seán Canney said the Government will be talking to insurance companies about mandatory cover for e-scooters. “There is no insurance company providing insurance, but they don’t have to be-
cause it’s not required [currently],” Mr Canney said. “We just have to see how it can be enacted, whether the insurance company will take on that risk. “If we make the decision on insurance, that they have to be insured, well, then it will be open to the market to insure them.” Meanwhile e-scooter riders in Paris must now wear helmets and reflective gear since early August. The new rules apply to anyone riding motorized mobility devices including e-scooters, segways and hoverboards. The rules were prompted by a 33% increase in serious injuries from these devices.

Gum Litter Taskforce arrive in Kerry to spread awareness The Gum Litter Taskforce has arrived in Kerry as part of its 2026 Summer Roadshow, promoting responsible gum disposal, cleaner communities and greater awareness of Ireland’s move towards a circular economy. The campaign made a stop in Kerry in partnership with Kerry County Council, encouraging people to dispose of their chewing gum responsibly and help keep local communities clean. The visit comes as research from the Gum Litter Taskforce reveals that littering is now viewed as socially unacceptable by more than 4 in 5 (82%) young people. However, almost 1 in 4 young people still do not regard chewing gum as litter, highlighting the need for continued education
and awareness. Encouragingly, more than 9 in 10 people (92%) now report properly disposing of their chewing gum – the highest level recorded since the campaign began in 2007. Avril Donlon, Gum Litter Campaign Manager at Food Drink Ireland, said: "This latest research shows real progress, with more young people recognising that littering is unacceptable and taking action. Our focus remains on making responsible gum disposal the norm and continuing to build on the positive behaviours we are seeing across communities nationwide." The Summer Roadshow will visit locations nationwide throughout June, July and August, while the Bin It! programme will return to schools from October. Educational resources are available at www. gumlittertaskforce.ie.

Large crowds attend Muckross Vintage Rally The Killarney Valley Classic and Vintage Club, together with Muckross Traditional Farms, hosted a successful Vintage Rally last Sunday A strong public turnout benefited from dry weather as visitors explored displays of vintage cars and tractors. Interactive heritage demonstrations took place across the farm grounds, including traditional threshing in the farmyard, haymaking in the fields, and blacksmithing in the forge. Entertainment featured dancing at the crossroads and in the schoolhouse, with live performances by the Killarney School
of Music and the Hegarty Dance Academy. A new children’s sports day was added to the event schedule this year, proving popular with families. Proceeds raised from the rally will be donated to this year's chosen charity, the Kerry Mental Health Association. The club extended its thanks to all members and volunteers who helped organise and run the event.

LEAVING CERT RESULTS:
NEWS 43
What comes next?
Congratulations to the Class of 2026! After months of study, revision and exams, Leaving Cert results day marks the end of one chapter and the beginning of another. For students and their families, it can be an emotional few days, with excitement, relief and perhaps some disappointment. Whatever the outcome, it is important to recognise the achievement of reaching this point. There is no single definition of success and, importantly, there is no single route to the future. Over the coming days, there are a number of important dates and deadlines for students who wish to access their examination information, view their scripts or appeal a result. Most of these processes take place through the Candidate Self-Service Portal (CSSP).
KEY DATES AND DEADLINES
August 21 at 10am: Leaving Cert results issued by the State Exams Commission (SEC) and available to individual students through the CSSP. They will also be available to schools through their own school portal. August 25 at 12 noon: Candidates can see component marks for each subject including orals, aurals, practicals, projects and the written part of the paper. August 25 at 5pm: Applications to view exam scripts open. August 26 at 8pm: Applications to view exam scripts close. The viewing of examinations scripts is free of charge. The LCA application to view scripts will be via email. The same timeline applies. August 29 at 9am to August 31 at 9am: Access will be available to view scripts for exams which were marked online.
Exams which were manually marked can be viewed at an assigned time during two sessions in school on Saturday, August 29 between 9.30am and 5pm. August 30 at 10am to August 31 at 5pm: Applications to appeal subjects can be made online via the CSSP. The fee to appeal a result is €40 per subject for Leaving Certificate and €15.50 for Leaving Certificate Applied. The fee is refunded in the case of a successful appeal. September 25 at 11am: Results of Leaving Cert appeals will be released (provisional date). These timelines to view scripts and to lodge appeal applications are very short. This is to ensure that the appeals process can be completed as quickly as possible. This means that the State Exams Commission will NOT accept late applications for viewing or for appeals, so it is essential that students are aware of and adhere to them.
HELP IS AVAILABLE
The SEC Candidate helpline will be available at 1800 111 135 or 1800 111 136 from 9am to 5pm from Friday, August 21. Outside of these hours, you can email your queries to candidateportal@examinations.ie.
SECOND-CHANCE MATHS EXAM
For students who have missed the minimum Maths requirement for a particular course, there may still be another opportunity. Some universities offer
a second-chance or alternative Maths examination, usually taking place in the week following the release of the Leaving Cert results. Students should check the ‘Important Dates’ section of the CAO website for details of participating universities and how to apply.
CAO ROUND 1 OFFERS
For many students, the next major milestone will be the release of the first round of CAO offers. CAO Round 1 offers will be issued on Wednesday, August 26 from 2pm. Students can check their offers by logging into the ‘My Applications’ section of the CAO website using their CAO number, date of birth and account password. Offers will also be issued by email and SMS. Students who do not receive an offer will receive a Statement of Application email. The 2026 cut-off points will also be published by the CAO once Round 1 offers are released. Applicants may receive an offer from both their Level 8 and Level 7/6 course lists, but can accept only one offer. Offers can be accepted, declined or, where appropriate, deferred before the Round 1 acceptance deadline of September 1 at 3pm. Further rounds of offers will follow as places become available.
WHAT IF THERE IS NO CAO OFFER?
Not receiving a CAO offer is not the end of the road. Students should first check their Statement of Application for any errors or omissions and contact the CAO immediately through the Correspond-
Niamh Dwyer is a Career Guidance Counsellor. Professional career advice for students making career decisions and adults planning to change or develop in their career.
ence section of their account if they identify an issue. There are also plenty of alternatives to explore, including CAO Available Places, Post Leaving Cert (PLC) courses, apprenticeships, traineeships, supported training programmes and joint tertiary degree programmes. Studying abroad may also be an option for some students.
HELP AND ADVICE
The Institute of Guidance Counsellors (IGC) and National Parents Council Post Primary (NPCPP) will run their annual helpline for students, parents and guardians around results and CAO offers from August 21 to August 29. Calls are free to 1800 265 165 or text 086 1800 685, where queries are answered by qualified guidance counsellors. Above all, students should remember that a Leaving Cert result does not define their potential or determine their future. There is not one pathway that suits everyone. There are many routes into further education, training, employment and careers – and sometimes the path that is not planned turns out to be the one that works best.
KILCUMMIN GAA HOST NEW YORK'S ST BARNABAS: Kilcummin GAA hosted international visitors on Saturday as the club welcomed St Barnabas GFC from the Bronx, New York, for an Under-12 football challenge match. Founded in 1915 by Irish immigrants, St Barnabas is one of the oldest and most prominent GAA clubs in New York, with a long history of promoting Gaelic games in the Bronx. The match was held as part of the visiting American side’s tour of Ireland. Both teams put on an entertaining contest, featuring high-quality football and impressive scoring from each side. Following the final whistle, players, mentors, and supporters gathered in the clubhouse for a wide selection of refreshments provided by Kilcummin GAA and local parents.

The part-time fee scheme is a financial support scheme, which was introduced in 2024, for students studying certain part-time undergraduate courses in Ireland and abroad. The scheme provides fee support to eligible part-time students doing specified undergraduate courses leading to a major award with a minimum average of 30 credits and maximum of 50 credits per academic year. The number of credits undertaken during the academic year will determine the funding available to you for that year. The scheme only offers support with fees and is not a maintenance grant. Student Universal Support Ireland (SUSI) is the awarding authority for the scheme.

Ordeal For The Vanquished NICKY BARRY Homecomings are for champions, with a big cup to show, And not for the vanquished, who just don’t want to know, But fans demand this pantomime, to show their appreciation, Of the efforts made for them, on All-Ireland missions. It can be an ordeal, for players who did their best, And now just want a quiet pint, and a well-earned rest, But the fans are insistent, that they get up on a stage, And be presented one by one, as the MC whips up cheers. He compliments them singly, on their valiant displays, And repeats time and again, there will be another day. He tells them they’ll be back with Sam, as they did before, For this was just a hiccup, and the crowd all roar. The Manager then addresses them, and makes apologies, For failing to deliver, another famous victory. He promises them that next year, they’ll be back again, And to keep believing, for they’ll try might and main, To reach the magic forty, which will be a mighty feat, Made possible by past heroes, who learned from their defeats. He gives them what they want to hear, and they lap it up, For it’s their great tradition, to keep bringing back that cup!

Irish athletes and fans turn England green
Local woman Leahy helps 4x100m team reach first ever European final
Sprint star Sarah Leahy from Killarney Valley AC together with the Irish national women's relay team placed seventh in the final of the 4x100m relay at the European Championships in Birmingham. It was the first time an Irish women's relay team qualified for the final at a major championship. The team of Lucy-May Sleeman, Ciara Neville, Sarah Leahy and Lauren Roy ran a blistering new NR (national record) in the semi-final in a time of 43.13 to qualify. Incidentally, if they were to recapture that time in the final, then it was possible it would have been good enough for a
bronze medal. Ultimately, they ran it in 44.18 to come home in seventh Sarah, who has raced in the relay for the last few years, has now competed at three major championships: the World Championships in Oregon in the USA, the World Relays in Botswana and now the European Championships in England. She has also raced on the Diamond
League circuit and has achieved national records on four occasions. The Killarney native is the former national indoor 60m champion and holds the individual indoor 50m and 100m records, while also having initially broke the national relay record in London last year. These recent championships are now regarded as the most successful Euro-

Sarah will now be shifting all her focus towards the National Indoor Championships in the spring, again chasing a European qualifying time for the 60m and helping team Ireland to secure qualification for next year's World Outdoor Championships. The European outdoors will come around in 2028 again before the Olympic Games in Los Angeles in 2028 where Sarah will be hoping to qualify as part of the Irish team. 21.08.2026 | By Eamonn Fitzgerald On the day that’s in it, Friday, August 21, I wish the best of luck to all Leaving Cert students of 2026 who received their exam results today. No doubt the full gamut of emotions has been experienced, from the high-flyers in the points race through to those who somehow stumbled over the line yet achieved their goal. Q.E.D. Points are the issue: no two-pointers as are awarded in football games, but orange flags will be raised for some students when the CAO offers arrive within the week. Elation and disappointment may follow at all levels in the first offers based on CAO points and places available to match the students’ preferences. Health-related courses such as Medicine, Physio, Dentistry and Veterinary spring to mind. It's a case of demand far outreaching supply, so many students with outstanding results will not get their first choices, and that worrying continues until second offers, if any, arrive. So for those players in all sports, and in the 18-year age cohort whose performances may drop in the current active sports programme, let's all give them a break. They are under intense pressure. So too are their parent(s)/guardian(s). Worst case of all are those who wish to study Radiography. The only place in Ireland offering that specific course is UCD.
NEWBRIDGE OR NOWHERE, AGAIN
The Newbridge or Nowhere scenario is re-enacted once more. Demand for places in Physiotherapy courses far outstrips the places available. Students who will not make the entry requirements or points for physio will look to places like MTU Kerry, UL or further afield to navigate a longer jour-
55
Go easy on students at this time of year ney into a masters in physio. The alternative is to go abroad to study. Kerry students are fortunate to have great choices in MTU (Kerry and Cork Campuses), UL, UCC and TUS Midlands, as well as Kerry College for those taking the PLC route, but students’ interest in specific areas often necessitate travel further away. So, what's that got to do with a sports column? In the short term, let us all spectators, self-appointed expert hurlers on the ditch, parents, team managers, coaches, sports journalists, pundits, et al., ease up on the negativity. There may well be a good reason for a temporary drop in performance in whatever sport those 18-year-olds play. The long-term effects are even more startling. For some students, it can be a choice between repeating the Leaving Cert or going abroad to study. The latter choice effectively means s/he ceases playing with the home club. Once the class of 2026 leaves home to a new life in college, the bond can change for some players. In the case of students who have to travel long distances from home because of the location of their chosen courses, what realistic chances are there of players returning
at weekends to play for the club which has been their sporting life for well over a decade? I am thinking of young people making the long weekend commutes from places like Sligo, Mayo, Athlone, Derry or Belfast. Think of the player on the fringes of the senior club team sitting on the sideline for most of the summer games, getting only token minutes of playing time even though s/he has put the same massive effort into training as the teammates who are always going to be selected?
KILLARNEY TRANSPORT
Killarney is not the worst place in this scenario, with direct trains to and from most centres, but not the likes of Sligo, Carlow, Athlone, Galway, Waterford, Letterkenny, Derry or Belfast. Pity the talented top 18-year-old player in Ballyferriter, Daingean Uí Chúis, or worse still Valentia Island. How can those good players devote such a big chunk of time training away from home, but particularly travelling home to play for the home club? Is it any wonder that South Kerry clubs in par-
ticular are being devastated by the loss of their brilliant minors, who should be their de facto seniors? Depopulation and current demographic trends suggest strongly to me that far too many good, talented club players are being lost in those transition years from 2nd level schooling to 3rd level. Only the very few will try to straddle both horses. The fringe players may transfer to a club in their university location, switch to a less demanding sporting commitment, or just drop out of sport altogether. What a shame if that happens! Some clubs provide a solution by providing B teams. It is a fruitful exercise, because I believe that once a player has the option of playing at whatever level, s/he will be satisfied and continue with the home club, with the incentive that progression to the club’s A team is a possibility, maybe even a probability. It is not a doomsday situation - yet- but like the catch cry of Frankie Byrne in the airwaves of the past, “it may not be your problem today, but it may well be yours someday”.
TABHAIR AIRE
Tabhair aire, the day of reckoning may not be that far off. Solutions are needed, short and long-term. That ties in with an enigma of whatever happened to great minor footballers who never progressed to play championship senior football with Kerry. The statistics are frightening. Some PhD Studies contend that the odds of progressing from county minor to county senior are overwhelmingly stacked against young players for a variety of reasons. More on that topic and related issues in future editions.

Kerry FC fully focussed on the league after cup exit After that special penalty shootout victory over League of Ireland giants Shelbourne in the previous round, Kerry FC’s luck ran out against in Round 3 of the FAI Cup as they fell to a disappointing 4-0 defeat to Sligo Rovers in The Showgrounds. The Kingdom had, of course, beaten Rovers in the quarter-final of last year’s competition but there was to be no such heroics this time around as the hosts took the lead as early as the 13th minute via Cian Kavanagh. The Premier Division side doubled their advantage in the 32nd minute when Alex Nolan converted from the spot, and they withstood some Kerry pressure at the other end to go in at the break holding a
2-0 lead. Colin Healy’s men started the second half energetically but that all-important goal just evaded them. Sligo put the game to bed in the 80th minute when captain Carl McHugh scored a beauty from outside the area, and debutant Kaiyne Woolery made it 4-0 in the final minute of regulation. Kerry’s attention now returns to league action and with nine games remaining they are still very much in the hunt for a place in the playoffs. Next up is a home match against UCD tonight (Friday) at 7.45pm in Tralee. The Students are currently joint second in the First Division, six points ahead of Kerry. A win could potentially see the Kingdom climb as high as fourth.

Lowe played superbly throughout the championship, completing the 54 holes on +4 to claim the National title by an impressive five-shot margin. Ashlene McKevitt of Cloghogue finished runner-up on +9, while Nicola Ahern of Collins took third place on +13. Ciara Lowe is the first Deerpark and Co. Kerry winner of the intermediate championship since Margaret Looney topped
the 1998 leaderboard at Irish Ropes (now Ryston) in 1998. Ciara won the Munster Intermediate Strokeplay and National Intermediate Strokeplay championships in the same year – the 3rd player in history (after Michelle McCarthy and Mary Murray) to do so. It was a hugely significant victory for Lowe, who comes from a family with a strong tradition in pitch and putt. That family connection made the occasion all the more special, with members of her family in Cunnigar to watch her become a National Champion. Ciara achieved her superb win forty years after her father Con O’Sullivan was a member of Kerry’s 1986 National Inter-County winning side
Big weekend of action for 10 senior clubs The final round of fixtures in the group stage of the Kerry Senior Club Championship takes place this weekend with plenty to play for across the four fixtures in Groups 1, 2 and 3. In Group 1, Dr Crokes and Rathmore have both qualified for the knockout phase but they meet at Lewis Road on Saturday (6.30pm) to see who will top
the pool and advance directly to the semi-finals. The loser will go through to the so-called quarter-finals. A draw will do the Killarney side. At the foot of the table, winless Dingle and Spa are both out but they will be desperate to avoid the dreaded relegation playoffs when they square off in Tullig on Sunday (1pm). In Group 2, the winners of Templenoe v
Kenmare Shamrocks (Sunday 4pm) will join leaders Austin Stacks in the knockouts. For Kenmare, a draw will suffice. And in Group 3, if Na Gaeil can beat An Ghaeltacht in Gallarus all three teams will finish level on two points, and points difference (which is also tight) will be needed to decide who is going through. If An Ghaeltacht win, they and Milltown/ Castlemaine will qualify.

Firies race walker Kenny sets new PB
21.08.2026
| By Eamonn Fitzgerald The recent European Athletic Championships provided sports lovers with so much to savour, the most successful one ever for Irish participants. The Irish team of 30 men and 25 women were ranked 9th overall, returning with 2 Gold, 1 Silver and 1 Bronze. Add in the fantastic performance in the Aquatics in Paris where Team Ireland won five medals – Dubliner Ellen Walshe with a pair of golds and Mona McSharry taking a silver and two bronze medals back to Sligo. Irish sports stars give us great hope for the Olympics at Los Angeles in 2028. Back to Birmingham. Gold for Mark English in the 800m and special mention for Gold winner Kate O'Connor in the women’s heptathlon (over a demanding seven events). Rhasidat Adeleke won silver in the Women’s 200m and bronze for Andrew Coscoran in the men’s 1500m. It was wonderful to see so many of the Irish compete against
the best. Naturally, one looks at the medal winners – and the Irish haul was the best ever – but as always there were the heartbreaks, especially for those finishing in the dreaded 4th just out of the medals. It was an early watch on RTÉ on Saturday morning last for followers of local race walker David Kenny. In last week’s preview, I suggested that the Rusheen, Firies native of Farranfore Maine Valley AC, would do well to make it into the top 5 with such a top-class field of athletes for the half marathon race walk. He finished in 6th place. No medal this time, but a very encouraging PB, which lifts the heart of any athlete. David recorded a PB of 1:24:49. No doubt he will continue to achieve greater things. What a recovery from his previous heartache in Tokyo last year. When he arrived in Tokyo for the World Championships, he suffered an illness and had to drop out. What a downer, but he dug in and prepared for Birmingham. On Saturday last, he was right in on the mix in 3rd position with the leaders at 15k, overcame an ominous hamstring
glitch and stuck with it to finish in 6th position. No doubt Rob Heffernan was so proud of David’s progress, but none more so than his home base Farranfore Maine Valley. Even when David went to college in CIT, he stayed loyal to his home club. The Firies native never forgets where he came from. Firies is the home of champions, the legendary JP O’Sullivan, his son Dr Eamon, who managed Kerry to win 8 All-Irelands and many more. No doubt Fr John Ahern, now retired, to his native Firies and a sports aficionado, can add so many more sports stars to that list. The Firies of today is no longer a small rural outpost from Killarney, Farranfore, Milltown. Killorglin and Tralee, but a rapidly expanding town. No doubt many sports stars will emerge to confirm the battle cry of a Dublin-based Firies native who concluded many of our discussions in sport with the rousing battle cry. ‘The day will come when Firies drums will sound in Farranfore.’ It may not be that far off, with the determination and ability of athletes such as David. He has had clubmate Michael

O’Connor, himself a champion master race walker, as his guide, supporter and mentor from his early years. You may not see David out training locally, but you will see the redoubtable Mike, formerly of Lawlor’s Cross, Inchicullane and more recently Alman’s Terrace, in the Sunday Park Runs at Killarney National Park or preparing for yet another Master’s title in the 70+ range. Sarah Leahy, the brilliant sprinter, daughter of Marie and Mike Leahy, did not climb the victory podium on this occasion, but the Killarney Valley AC star ran her leg of the Irish 4x100m relay time in great style to qualify for the finals. Both Irish relay teams, men and women, were well out of contention in the finals. Multiple-time winner and national record holder, a brilliant sprinter, Sarah will have 2028 in focus. The 2028 Summer Olympics will take place in Los Angeles, United States, from July 14 to July 30. No doubt Sarah will continue her ascending career over the next two years.

Twelve All-Ireland medals for Flesk Valley Rowing Club Flesk Valley Rowing Club had a memorable weekend at the 2026 All-Ireland Coastal Rowing Championships held in Bantry, Co. Cork on August 14-16. The club had nearly 100 members in action over the three days of the weekend, from U12 beginners to Masters, with many new members donning the Valley colours at the All-Irelands for the very first time. The Valley came home with a fantastic haul of 12 medals from the weekend, in the U12 Beginners, U12 Girls, U14 Boys, U14 Mixed, U16 Boys, U16 Mixed, U21 Girls, U18 Mixed, Masters Men and Intermediate Ladies. However, pride of place on the roll of honour must go to the U16 girls who won gold and silver on Sunday afternoon, having both qualified for the final from Saturday’s heats. The

excitement during the race and the reception that both crews received when they returned to shore will live long in the memory. Coxed by Kieran Counihan and Paul
Burke the two Valley crews battled each other fiercely all the way up and down the course before Kieran’s crew claimed the spoils by a matter of inches. The friendship and loyalty between both crews af-

The All-Ireland weekend is a major logistical operation for the club, and Flesk Valley expressed their gratitude to John Fleming, Karol Kelly, Kieran Counihan, Colm Ó’Súillebháin and Richie Leane for transporting the boats and equipment. “Flesk Valley would also like to thank the indomitable Mary B Teahan and the Irish Coastal Rowing Federation team for their hard work in organising and hosting such a fantastic event,” the club said. “The atmosphere and organisation of the championships was top class from start to finish: from the on-the-water commentary and superb drone footage on the big screen, to the fantastic live stream that let many people tune in at home (and in Bantry!). We would also like to very sincerely thank the safety and medical personnel for looking after everyone so well at the weekend.” This weekend was the culmination of a long year of training on the Valley shore under the watchful eyes of club coaches Colm Ó’Súillebháin, Breda Burke, Paul Burke, Kieran Counihan, Saoirse Sweeney, Jillian O’Neill, Caoimhe Kelly, John Fleming, Donal Kelly and Tadhg Kelly.
Memories to treasure at Beaufort Captain’s Day Lady Captain Mary Garvey held her much-anticipated Captain’s Day on Sunday, August 16 at Beaufort Golf Club. The weather played its part for most of the day as a large number of ladies took to the fairways of Beaufort Golf Course, all hoping to claim one of the most coveted prizes on the golfing calendar. Lady Captain Mary warmly welcomed members and guests before play, sending everyone on their way with a gorgeous goody bag, along with plenty of water and fruit to keep them refreshed as they prepared to tackle the beautiful Beaufort course. Following the day’s golf, Lady Captain Mary was joined by her family and friends, Captain Charlie McAuley and President Michael Lynch in the clubhouse for a wonderful evening filled with fun,
laughter and, of course, plenty of lively discussion about the day’s golf – where it all went right, and perhaps more importantly, where it all went wrong! Speaking from the heart, Lady Captain Mary reflected on how much she has enjoyed the honour of serving as Lady Captain and expressed her sincere gratitude to everyone who helped make her special day such a memorable occasion, as well as to all those who have supported her throughout her year. A fantastic array of prizes awaited the winners, and Lady Captain Mary worked her way through the presentations with her trademark warmth and heartwarming commentary, ensuring that every prize winner was made to feel like a true professional. With some excellent scoring and incredibly close results, Eimear McShortall emerged as the deserving winner, mak-
ing her victory all the sweeter. Mary O’Sullivan produced an outstanding round, returning a superb nett 60. However, due to a club competition eligibility rule regarding the required number of competitions played, she was unfortunately unable to take the overall title. Former Lady Captain Kathleen Cronin (2023) secured third place with an excellent nett 66, while Tralee Rose Hannah Moynihan and former Lady Captain Joan O’Sullivan (2007) battled it out for fourth and fifth places. The Past Captains’ Prize went to former Lady Captain Noreen Kinsella (2019). Kerry GAA legend Mary Jo Curran enjoyed an excellent front nine and duly collected the Front Nine Prize, while tennis legend Patricia O’Connor produced a strong finish to claim the Back Nine Prize. The Gross Prize was won by Laura Furlong, who produced a steady and impres-

sive round to return a gross score of 85. Mary O’Sullivan added another accolade to her day by sending her drive on the 8th a country mile to claim the Longest Drive, while Karen Tess produced a superb shot on the 2nd hole to secure the Nearest the Pin Prize. Following the prize-giving, everyone enjoyed a truly scrumptious meal in the newly refurbished Castle Corr Restaurant, prepared by the extremely talented Sebastian and served by Britta and her wonderful team of waiting staff. The mouth-watering food, delicious drinks and excellent service provided the perfect conclusion to a memorable day. Lady Captain Mary summed up the occasion beautifully: "It was a truly wonderful day from start to finish, filled with lovely moments, great company, delicious food and memories to treasure.”

Well done to Kilcummin, and a big thanks to our two referees, Brian and John. U16 BOYS: Div 10 County Semi Final Killarney Legion B 4-15 Dr Crokes B 3-7. Our U16B Team took on Dr Crokes this evening in Johnny Culloty Park with a place in the Div 10 County League Final at stage. The boys started well and with the aid of the breeze built a good lead through the half to lead by 2-10 to 1-3 at half time. Dr Crokes took advantage of some poor turnovers in the first 10 mins of the second half to narrow the gap. A few well worked scores settled the team again and, in the end, we ran out deserving winners. Thanks to Dr Crokes for a fine sporting game. The boys will play Kilcummin B in the final next week. SENIOR LADIES: Our senior ladies opened their Premier Junior Championship campaign with a visit to Spa on Sunday. Spa, with the aid of the breeze on their backs in the first half kicked 4 points to trail by 1 at half time to Legions 1-02, the goal coming for a clinical finish by Aine Devlin. Spa took control of the early stages of the 2nd half with some well taken scores to take the lead but legion always remained within touching distance and could well have taken all three points had they found that elusive goal but to spas credit they defended well and closed out the game on a score of Spa 0-11 Legion 1-06. Next up Ballymac at home next Sunday
Spa GAA ANNUAL MASS AND 1966 O’DONOGHUE CUP: Over 100 people attended the Club’s Annual Mass, which was celebrated by Club President Fr Tim O’Sullivan and Club Vice President Fr Michael O’Donoghue. Following Mass, the Club proudly honoured the 1966 O’Donoghue Cup-winning team with a special presentation. All surviving members of the historic team were in attendance, along with family representatives of deceased team members and mentors. It was a wonderful occasion to remember and celebrate the achievements of a team that holds a special place in the Club’s history. A fabulous night was had by all, with great memories shared and the Club community coming together to honour the past and celebrate the present. MEN’S CHAMPIONSHIP: Spa suffered a narrow two-point defeat to Rathmore in Round 2 of the Kerry Petroleum Senior Football Club Championship on Sunday afternoon, with Rathmore winning 0-18 to 0-16. Playing with the wind in the first half, Spa led 0-11 to 0-7 at half-time, with two-pointers from Evan Cronin, Cian
Murphy (2) and Dan O’Donoghue, while David Spillane and Liam Kearney also got on the scoresheet. Spa extended their lead to five points in the second half before a Rathmore two-pointer following a Spa breach helped turn the game in the hosts’ favour. Rathmore moved two points clear before Spa scored to reduce the deficit to one, but a late save from Rathmore goalkeeper William Casey denied Spa the chance to regain the lead, and the hosts added another point to see out the win. With Dingle also losing to Crokes, both Spa and Dingle remain on zero points in Group A, with Dingle holding the advantage on score difference. Spa must win their final group game against Dingle to avoid the relegation play-off, with the match taking place in Spa on Sunday 23rd August at 1pm. SPA LADIES: Our Senior Ladies got their Premier Junior Championship campaign off to a winning start on Sunday with a hard-fought victory over neighbours Killarney Legion in Spa. Playing against the breeze in the opening half, Spa trailed by a point at half-time, 0-4 to 1-2. Spa took control of the early stages of the second half, kicking some excellent scores to move ahead, and despite Legion remaining within touching distance, the Spa defence stood firm to see out the game. Spa eventually secured a deserved 0-11 to 1-6 victory and got their championship campaign off to the perfect start. Next up for Spa is a trip to Ballymac on 6th September, with Spa having already secured at least a QF spot.
Dr Crokes GAA CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP: Dr. Crokes 2:14 Dingle 1:16. The game was played at a relentless pace from the outset, with both sides showing plenty of attacking intent. We made the brighter start and quickly established a platform, with Tom Doyle and Billy Courtney pointing inside the opening two minutes. Cian McMahon found the net after just three minutes following an excellent run from Mark Fitzgerald. Further points from Brian Looney, Evan Looney, Micheál Burns, Cian McMahon, Charlie Keating and Gavin White kept the scoreboard ticking over as we enjoyed a strong opening half. Dingle responded with a number of scores of their own, but we went into the break with a deserved 1:10 to 0:08 advantage. The second half saw Dingle come out with renewed purpose and they began to chip away at the Crokes lead. A succession of scores brought them back into contention before they eventually found the net. We continued to fight for every ball and were rewarded when Cian McMahon converted a penalty, while Charlie Keating and Cian McMahon added further scores. There was also a superb save from Shane Murphy to deny Dingle a goal, keeping Crokes firmly in the contest. The closing stages were frantic, with both sides trading scores. David Shaw added an excellent two-
point score to level matters before Cian McMahon struck again late on. We now face Rathmore on Saturday at 6:30pm. MINOR CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP: Dr. Crokes 5:13 Laune Rangers 0:13. We got our Minor Club Championship campaign off to a flying start with a convincing victory over Laune Rangers. We raced into an early lead, with a goal from Ben Kelliher inside two minutes followed by a Dara O’Sullivan goal. Further scores from Eanna Hennigan, Luke O’Shea, Finn O’Donnell, Sean Kiely and Hammad Atiq saw Crokes lead 3-09 to 0-06 at half-time. Laune Rangers opened the second half with three quick points, but we settled and Ben Kelliher added a superb two-pointer before converting a free. Dara O’Sullivan then struck for his second goal, before Kelliher completed his hat-trick late on. A strong all-round performance saw our boys run out deserved winners. LOTTO took place on August 17th Numbers drawn were 1, 3, 14, 25. Jackpot of €5,600 was NOT WON. 5 patrons matched 3 numbers and received €80 each. Jackpot for draw on August 24th will be €5,900. Fossa GAA LOTTO: The numbers drawn on 16/08/2026 for a jackpot of €10,350 were 11, 19, 23, 27. There was no jackpot winner. The €40 consolation prize winners were Gavin Miller, Jenette McCarthy, Tim Foley, Mary Kearney, Eve, Fiadh and Rian McCarthy. Tickets are available from our sellers and can also be bought online. INTERMEDIATE CHAMPIONSHIP: Our seniors had a resounding victory over Glenbeigh/Glencar in the second round of the Intermediate Championship on Saturday evening. Fossa dominated this game from the get-go, and when they scored their first goal through Mark Kennelly which was immediately followed by a goal from Harry Buckley after a flowing move involving Eoin Talbot and Mark Kennelly, they never looked like losing this one. The foundation for the victory was laid in the first half, with Paudie Clifford controlling possession the younger players on the team really stood up and were counted, the likes of Sam Buckley, Jack Hallissey, Eoin Talbot, Darren Ryan, Mark Kennelly, Harry Buckley and Emmett O’Shea all led the line brilliantly. With David Clifford attracting the attention of the opposition defence, he created the room and brought the other players into the game with his incredible
61
21.08.2026 SPORT NOTES vision and passing ability. Fossa led at the break 3-10 to 0-3. Glenbeigh/Glencar needed a good start to the second half, but unfortunately for them David Clifford landed a monster two pointer in the first minute to put them on the back foot again. Ted O’Donovan scored a peach of a goal in the 5th minute which was quickly followed by another great effort by Emmett O’Shea to finish the game as a contest, they continued to add points from the impressive Harry Buckley, Rian Colleran, Fionn Doyle and Tadgh O’Shea to run out winners on a score of 5-25 to 0-12. SENIOR LADIES: Bon Secours Hospital Tralee Junior Premier County Championship – Round 1. A high scoring first half saw Fossa play some outstanding football, moving the ball with pace and purpose while creating scores through excellent support play and a tremendous work rate. Their willingness to work for one another and link effectively in attack ensured they held a deserved advantage at the interval. The second half was a much more fragmented affair, with frequent stoppages making it difficult for either side to build attacking momentum. Laune Rangers mounted a strong comeback and gradually reduced the deficit, but Fossa remained disciplined and committed throughout. Despite the stop start nature of the contest, the home side continued to battle for every ball and showed great determination when the game was in the balance. In the end, Fossa's dominant first half display, coupled with their teamwork, intelligent support running and relentless effort, proved enough to see them over the line and secure a hard earned threepoint win on a final score of 3-10 v 1-13. We wish Laune Rangers good luck for the rest of the competition.
Kilcummin GAA INTERMEDIATE RD 2: Kilcummin 2-12 Firies 1-14. Our senior team scraped over the line in this closely contested encounter in Farranfore on Saturday evening last but showed great courage and determination in doing so. Philip O’Leary had two early points, but Firies led by two after 15 minutes. A Mark O’Shea point and a Kevin McCarthy goal after 17 minutes saw us lead by two points. Firies rallied however and the teams were level again only for Sean O’Leary to kick a late point to see us lead at half time by the minimum 1-4 to 0-6. Firies levelled early in the second half but a Mikey Casey point and a Philip O’Leary goal following good work from Kevin McCarthy saw us take a four-point lead. When Kieran Murphy kicked a two - pointer a minute later we appeared to be in control of the game. However a lapse of concentration in our defence saw the ball end up in Brendan Kealy's net and a galvanised Firies found themselves just three points behind. Despite two further Mikey Casey points, four unanswered scores by Firies left us
trailing by a point with 5 minutes left. Kevin McCarthy and Cian Foley forged us ahead, but Firies levelled again in injury time. In the final play of the game up stepped man of the match Philip O’Leary to seal victory in a thrilling contest. While Kilcummin will not be happy with certain aspects of their performance they still showed great resilience in overcoming a very impressive Firies team and now look forward to a home game against John Mitchells at the weekend. Team Brendan Kealy, James Williams, Dara Stack, Chris O’Leary, Sean O’Leary, Dara O’Callaghan, James Nagle, Colm Kelleher, Kieran Murphy, Mark O’Shea, Ian Devane, Cian Foley, Mikey Casey, Gary O’Leary, Philip O’Leary. Glenflesk GAA INTERMEDIATE CHAMPIONSHIP: Glenflesk 1-16 Kerins O’Rahillys 0-12. With elimination after 2 games from the Intermediate Championship a certainty if Glenflesk were defeated last Sunday, the team responded with a tenacious, intense performance, ending with a well-deserved 7-point win over Kerins O’Rahillys, leaving qualification for the quarter finals still a strong possibility. After an early 2 point free from Darragh O’Connor put the visitors in front, Glenflesk replied with well worked scores from John Kelliher and Dylan Roche. Defences were on top early, with both sides missing chances, leaving the scores level at 3 points after 15 minutes. After Patrick Darcy put Glenflesk ahead again, the Tralee side replied with 4 points without reply, a Barry John Keane 2 pointer the
pick of them. With 4 minutes to go to half time, Glenflesk needed a response. They ended the half well, with a Daniel Brien point the first of 4 to end the half. Liam O’Brien, Brian O’Donoghue and Kelliher, giving them a 1-point lead at half time, on a score of 8 points to 7. The break for half time did not stop the momentum, with Glenflesk’s intensity in the tackle causing the visitors problems. They steadily increased the lead, with Dylan and Darragh Roche, Darcy and a Mark Kelliher 45, putting them 5 ahead, and well on the way to victory. With Kerins O’Rahillys really struggling, they got a lifeline when O’Connor fired over a long range 2 point free. When he fired over another monster 2 pointer, this time from play, there was only a point between the sides. Sub Callum Cronin then increased Glenflesk’s lead again. Then Glenflesk’s outstanding midfielders John Kelliher and Luke Crowley linked up for the crucial goal. Kelliher judging his loop perfectly, with Crowley blasting home from close range. Cronin and Darragh Roche then linked up for Roche to get the final score of the day and send Glenflesk to Castleisland Desmonds this Saturday 22nd at 6:30pm in Castleisland, with everything still to play for, after a highly impressive and wellearned victory. Thanks to Michael Healy for the match report. JUNIOR PREMIER CHAMPIONSHIP: Well done to our Senior Ladies, who got their Championship campaign off to a great start with a strong win over Inbhear Scéine Gaels last Sunday. Final Score Glenflesk 3:17 ISG: 3:07. Their next Championship game is away to Fossa on the 6th of September. COMMUNITY GAMES: The very best of luck to Dylan O’Connor, Kaylee Lynch and brothers Ryan, Jacob and Robbie O’Donoghue who will be representing Glenflesk and Kerry at the Athletics National Finals in Carlow this weekend.

Deerpark Pitch & Putt SUNDAY AUGUST 16TH: What a day of days last Sunday was for the club in three different venues in three different competitions! Firstly, pride of place went to Ciara Lowe on completing a National and Munster Ladies Intermediate Strokeplay double in Cunnigar at the National Ladies Strokeplay Finals with her one under par round for her final 18 holes on Sunday giving her a winning total of four over par. Ciara's win comes 28 years after Margaret C Looney's win in the same event back in 1998 and 40 years after her dad Connie was on the Kerry's Men’s team that won the 1986 National Inter-County. Congratulations to Ciara from all in the club. Not to be outdone her father teamed with Dan Broderick on Saturday to win the Intermediate Section of the Listowel Scotch Foursomes Scratch Cup. Also at Listowel David Harnett won the Junior Men’s Singles event as Damien Fleming was third in the Senior Men’s event. Finally, on Sunday, after some disappointment for himself at the conclusion of our U16 Scratch Cup on Saturday, Fionn McMonagle bounced back in style today to win the Bruff U16 Scratch Cup six days before it hosts the National Singles and Inter-County event. Well done to Fionn on completing a magnificent showing for the club. U16 SCRATCH CUP: As mentioned there was a dramatic finish at our U16 Scratch Cup event on Saturday as a run of late birdies from Daniel Quinlan gave him victory over 36-hole leader Fionn McMonagle by a single stroke to become the first player to claim our brand-new Claret Jug kindly sponsored by The Victoria Killarney. Our thanks again to Johnny and Sinead Courtney as we say well done to our U16 Officers Mike Cronin and Niall O’Loughlin for running the event itself. Full Results -Deerpark unless stated- 45
