The complete vacation of both Killarney District Hospital and St Columbanus Home has shifted public attention toward how state authorities plan to protect and utilise these prominent local sites.

HISTORY OF NEGLECT

Killarney possesses a troubled relationship with disused public infrastructure, with several key properties left idle for extended periods following operational closures. The most noticeable example remains St Finan’s Hospital, a massive Victorian-era structure that has stood vacant and slowly deteriorating since its operations ceased in 2012. Similarly, the long-standing inaction surrounding the Áras Phádraig facility on Lewis Road and the former Pretty Polly manufacturing site serve as recurring lo-

cal reminders of the difficulties faced in repurposing publically-owned assets. Both departing healthcare facilities carry deep historical importance within the community. St Columbanus Home traces its origins back to the 19th century, when it was

established as the Killarney Union Workhouse during the 1840s before converting into a dedicated elder care venue in the 20th century. Killarney District Hospital similarly provided crucial medical care and local hospital services for nearly a century.

Residents finally transfer to new Lewis Road Community Nursing Unit Elderly residents have officially begun moving into the new, multimillion-euro Killarney Community Nursing Unit on Lewis Road this week, bringing a resolution to a prolonged sequence of delays and missed opening timelines. Health service staff initiated the transfer by transporting residents’ personal belongings and medical equipment before commencing the physical relocation of over 100 individuals from Killarney District Hospital and St Columbanus Home. While the new Lewis Road complex features a total capacity of 130 beds, not all spaces are occupied immediately. Additional residents are expected to be accommodated gradually in the coming weeks, including prospective transfers from other regional care settings such as Kenmare. In an official statement detailing the logistics, a HSE South West spokesperson confirmed: “HSE South West is this week beginning

the process of moving to Killarney Community Nursing Unit, on a phased basis. The transfer plan began with the move of residents’ belongings and equipment. Residents’ move to their new home will continue over the coming period on a planned and phased basis. This is a sig-

nificant logistical operation, involving the move of a significant number of residents with varying levels of needs. There are a number of factors which will affect how long the move will take, however we are working to move all residents safely and in the shortest possible timeframe.”

Community members and local public representatives are expressing strong anxiety that these historical structures could face a similar path of neglect if decisive action is not taken immediately. There are widespread calls for the HSE and Kerry County Council to formulate a comprehensive strategy to preserve the structural integrity of both locations. Among the primary proposals put forward is the potential conversion of part of the former District Hospital into a Minor Injuries Unit. Advocates argue such a move would deliver essential medical services locally while simultaneously easing ongoing pressure on University Hospital Kerry. Without immediate planning, however, fears persist that two more landmark sites will join the town’s list of vacant properties.

Local reaction to hospital opening Councillor Martin Grady was the only locally elected representative to contact the Killarney Advertiser to welcome the opening of the new healthcare facility. Welcoming the news, Cllr Grady highlighted the positive impact the facility will have on local families and older residents across the region. “I am delighted to welcome the long-awaited opening of the Killarney Community Nursing Unit,” Cllr Grady said. “This will be a wonderful addition for Killarney and County Kerry, providing much-needed care in our community and, importantly, helping to bring loved ones closer to home and their families.” He extended his warm wishes to everyone involved in the transition, adding: “I want to wish all the residents and their families the very best as they settle into the new unit. I also want to sincerely thank the staff for their dedication and commitment and wish them every success in the years ahead.”

Hauliers bring fuel debate to Killarney Killarney will take centre stage in the national debate over rising fuel costs next month as the Irish Road Haulage Association (IRHA) gathers for its Annual Conference at the Gleneagle Hotel on Friday, September 4, and Saturday, September 5. Thousands of transport operators and hauliers from across Ireland are expected to attend the two-day event, which takes place as the industry faces increasing regulatory pressures and potential cuts to government fuel supports. Senior political leaders are scheduled to address the conference. Minister for Climate, Environment, Energy and Transport Darragh O'Brien TD, alongside Minister of State Seán Canney TD, will address delegates at Saturday evening’s gala dinner. Other political speakers over the weekend include Michael Healy-Rae TD, MEP Cynthia Ní Mhurchú, Carol Nolan TD, and Sean Kelly MEP. IRHA President Ger Hyland warned that any government plans to unwind existing fuel supports would place severe pressure on hauliers and the wider economy. "The attendance of both Ministers with responsibility for transport underlines the importance of the issues facing our industry. Hauliers are once again dealing with rising fuel prices at a time when operating costs remain exceptionally high.

We believe now is not the time to withdraw fuel supports, and that message will be delivered directly to Government during our conference," Hyland said. "Any decision to wind down fuel supports at this time would drive inflation and have a severe impact on households and families across the country who would see higher food, and transport costs – driving the cost of living crisis to unsustainable levels. Adding 30 cents back onto a litre of fuel will mean that many haulage businesses simply will not make it to Christmas."

Concerns raised over September fuel increases With the Irish Road Haulage Association conference taking place in Killarney, the timing of the event holds deeper significance for all road users facing upcoming increases at the pump. Fuel prices are set to rise on September 1 as temporary cuts to excise duty and the National Oil Reserves Agency (NORA) levy come to an end. The NORA levy is a standard 2 cent per litre charge applied to petroleum products in Ireland to fund the strategic oil reserves and the Climate Action Fund. Local Kerry TD Danny Healy-Rae has voiced strong concerns over the impending price hikes, pointing out that the Dáil will not reopen until September 17, leaving motorists and businesses without immediate relief. "I have raised my concerns regarding the cost of fuel for road users with the Minister for Transport," Healy-Rae stated. "I am very concerned that there will be no assistance available regarding fuel costs for road users, people commuting for work, agricultural and commercial road

users. As the current cuts to excise and NORA levy will end on September 1 and the Dáil will not reopen until September 17, I fear nothing will be done until after that date and during that time all these road users will be paying through the nose for extra excise duty , extra vat and more carbon tax. I have written to the Minister for Transport to review this matter." The expiring measures are expected to hit hauliers, commuters, and agricultural workers alike, adding further financial pressure across the sector.

New documentary on local legend Cathal Walshe A new documentary celebrating the life and resilience of one of Killarney’s best-known figures, Cathal Walshe, will premiere at the Gleneagle Hotel on Wednesday, September 9, at 7.30pm. Produced by Photography & Design By Molly, The Ripple Effect explores the inspiring story of the retired Garda, father, and tireless community activist. A fourtime cancer survivor, Cathal is also widely recognised as one of the longest-serving volunteers with the Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle.

The screening will showcase Cathal’s personal journey facing and overcoming bowel cancer, alongside his decades of dedicated volunteering across Ireland. The premiere evening will also feature a selection of other locally made short films and live music. Admission to the event is free, with the evening aiming to raise vital funds for Kerry Hospice Foundation. Everest summiteer McCarthy inspires local businesses

Fresh from standing on the roof of the world, Fossa mountaineer Frank McCarthy was the guest of honour at a recent BNI Kerry meeting at the Great Southern Killarney, where he shared the remarkable story behind his successful ascent of Mount Everest.

Frank now joins an elite group, becoming one of just 72 Irish people to successfully summit Mount Everest, one of only three from County Kerry, and the youngest Kerryman ever to reach the top. His achievement represents years of preparation, unwavering commitment, and extraordinary physical and mental resilience. Addressing local business owners and visitors at the weekly networking event, Frank provided a captivating insight into his months of intense training, the extreme physical conditions on the mountain, and the determination required to complete the climb. Beyond the mountaineering feat itself, Frank drew parallels between extreme sports and entrepreneurship, speaking on discipline, preparation, teamwork,

calculated risk, and staying focused when pursuing ambitious goals. The morning also marked a double celebration, as host venue The Great Southern Killarney recently achieved prestigious five-star status. Speaking on behalf of BNI Kerry, Sherry O’Callaghan said: “Frank’s story is one that every Kerryman and woman can take pride in. To become one of only 72 Irish summiteers of Mount Everest is an extraordinary achievement, but what struck us most was his humility and willingness to share the lessons he learned along the way. His journey reminded us that success, whether in business, sport or life, is built through preparation, perseverance and an unwavering belief in what’s possible.”

The three-day August Festival at Killarney Races returns from Thursday August 20 to Saturday 22, promising a packed lineup of trackside action, top-tier style, and live entertainment.

Muckross Farms to host annual vintage rally

The festival kicks off with GMIB Raceday on Thursday, followed by Kelliher's Toyota Raceday on Friday. The weekend reaches its climax on Saturday 22nd August with Best Dressed Day, sponsored by Irish online fashion boutique Canella Lane. Digital personalities Caoimhe McGinley and fashion stylist Michelle Fitzpatrick will guest judge this year’s style competition. Prizes up for grabs include trips to Paris or Milan for the most stylish lady and gent on the day.

The Killarney Valley Classic & Vintage Club will host its popular annual Vintage Rally at Muckross Traditional Farms this Sunday, August 16. Organised alongside the Trustees of Muckross House, the family-focused event opens to the public at 11am, celebrating the region's motoring and agricultural history. Attendees can look forward to a wide array of classic cars and vintage tractors, as well as live traditional farming displays such as threshing, cultivating, and seeding. Heritage exhibitions showcasing old-style craftsmanship and rural Irish life will also be on show throughout the day. A staple on the local summer calendar,

the gathering draws enthusiasts and visitors from all across Ireland. To qualify for display, all participating vehicles and farm machinery must be a minimum of 30 years old. Exhibitors are asked to arrive on site prior to 10.30am. Organised in partnership with Transition Kerry and the Killarney Asylum Seekers Initiative (KASI) Community Garden, the session was open to HSE staff and representatives from community and voluntary organisations at the Rookery Road venue. Participants were introduced to the work of Transition Kerry and KASI while exploring how Greencare can support

personal and client well-being. Attendees learned practical ways to use nature-based venues such as community gardens in everyday practice, alongside actions to enhance sustainability, resilience, and confidence in Greencare prescribing across local workplaces. The collaborative initiative highlighted the ongoing partnership between HSE South West Community Work, Transition Kerry, and KASI in developing health and social projects to support and engage local communities.

Top golf scores at Mahony’s Point Ivan Tagney and Aoife Twomey secured top honours at Killarney Golf and Fishing Club as members turned out in large numbers to compete for Captain Tomás Kelliher's Prize on Mahony's Point. In the men's event, Ivan Tagney claimed the Captain's Prize with an impressive 42 points. Conor Dillon carded 48 points, returning the lowest score of the weekend, though he was ineligible for the main trophy without an established handicap. Despite wet weather, the ladies section produced remarkable scoring on Sunday. Aoife Twomey took first place playing off 28 handicap, recording a nett 63. June O'Brien finished runner-up with a 67 nett,

followed by Kay O'Connor in third with a 69 nett. Captain Tomás Kelliher extended his thanks to the committee, staff, and volunteers for organising the flagship competition, praising the course condition and strong turnout across both events.

AMANO to headline LASTA Festival finale in Tralee Killarney’s acclaimed bilingual singer, songwriter, and sean-nós artist AMANO is set to close out this year's LASTA Young Curator’s Festival with a special headline concert at Siamsa Tíre on Sunday, October 4.

Further details revealed for new Gap dog park The operators of the new dog walking park near the Gap of Dunloe have released further details about the new venture. Operated by local businessman Seán MacCarthy, who also runs a gym on New Street, the new facility is officially named "Off The Leash". Spanning approximately two acres, the dedicated site will cater to a wide range of canine needs by offering both group social hours for friendly dogs to interact and private bookings.

The private slots are designed to provide a secure environment specifically suited for reactive dogs or restricted breeds. The venue will initially operate three days a week, opening Friday, Saturday, and Sunday from 8am to 8pm. Currently completing a residency abroad ahead of her autumn Irish tour, the local musician will take the stage at 7pm. Push to protect swimming spots in lakes and rivers Lochanna Beo is urging local swimmers and water enthusiasts to help identify popular bathing spots across Killarney's lakes and rivers as part of a Kerry County Council public consultation. The group is seeking official designation for heavily used local locations, including Dundag, Rosie’s Beach, and Colleen Bawn Rock on Muckross Lake, alongside Ross Bay and Victoria Bay on Lough Leane, to ensure they receive enhanced protection, safety infrastructure like life rings, and regular water quality monitor-

ing under EU and Irish standards. Killarney Park Hotel bids farewell to Noreen The Killarney Park has marked the end of an era as long-serving team member Noreen McSweeney officially retires after nearly five decades with the business.

Noreen started her career almost 50 years ago at The Ross before moving to The Killarney Park. Over the past half-century, she became a familiar face to generations of visitors to the town and a constant presence for her colleagues. Managing Director Marcus Treacy praised her contribution to the hotel over the decades: "Hospitality was never simply a job for Noreen; it is who she is. Caring for people came as naturally to her as breathing. Every guest she welcomed felt genuinely looked after, and every colleague who worked alongside her became better because of her example. As we continued to evolve The Killarney Park, I often spoke about preserving the hotel's DNA. The surroundings could change and our standards could continue to rise, but the soul of the hotel had to remain the same. If I were ever asked to define that DNA in one person, it would be Noreen McSweeney. She embodied everything we stand for , genuine hospitality, warmth, professionalism and heartfelt care."

Speaking on behalf of the family, the Treacys added: "Noreen has been part of our family for almost fifty years. Her loyalty, kindness and commitment have helped shape The Killarney Park into the hotel it is today, and we will always be grateful for everything she has given to our guests, our colleagues and our family. Tributes paid as former Judge Hugh O’Flaherty Tributes have been led by the Hugh O’Flaherty Memorial Society following the passing of former Supreme Court Judge Hugh O’Flaherty. A native of Cahersiveen, Judge O’Flaherty was a nephew of the famous Monsignor Hugh O’Flaherty, who saved thousands of lives during World War II. Since the formation of the Memorial Society in 2008, Judge O’Flaherty and his sister Pearl served as its inaugural patrons. He remained a dedicated supporter of the organization by assisting with fundraising efforts, connecting the society with international contacts, securing archive memorabilia, and advising authors and filmmakers working to preserve his uncle's legacy. Together with his late wife Kay, he was a regular attendee at society functions across Dublin and Killarney and participated in several of its Rome tours. The

society described him as an "irreplaceable touchstone" for all matters relating to Monsignor Hugh. Kerry TD Michael Cahill also paid tribute to the former Supreme Court judge, describing him as an outstanding public servant who dedicated his life to the law and the Irish State. Deputy Cahill highlighted Judge O’Flaherty’s strong lifelong connection to South Kerry, his commitment to preserving his uncle’s humanitarian legacy, his charitable work, and his passion as one of Kerry GAA’s greatest supporters. Judge O’Flaherty is survived by his sister Pearl, his children Bríd, Catherine, Hugh, and Rory, and his extended family.

Kerry Friends of Motor Neurone raise record €11k The generous communities of Killarney, Rathmore, and Muckross have raised a remarkable €11,255 for Kerry Friends of Motor Neurone (KFMN) during their annual Flag Day collection.

The total marks a significant increase of €3,265 over last year’s return, reflecting a overwhelming response to the expanded appeal. Held under glorious sunshine on Friday, June 26, this year's collection saw volunteers spread their wings further across the region, taking in collection points throughout Killarney town centre, local stores, Rathmore, and Muckross. Fundraising efforts in Rathmore were co-ordinated by KFMN Secretary Nora Murphy, who ensured hourly volunteer slots were filled throughout the day. Reflecting on the success of the appeal, KFMN Chairman Christy Lehane expressed deep gratitude to the volunteers and the public, while highlighting the stark reality facing those relying on the service. "Where would we be without our won-

derful volunteers who come to our assistance year after year? I would like to take this opportunity to say a heartfelt thank you to all of you good people who never let us down," said Lehane. "All the huge effort put in by everybody was really worth it. Thank you to all the people who handed in donations. These monies are so appreciated, especially in these challenging times where everything is so expensive." Lehane also drew attention to the heavy reliance on voluntary contributions to maintain critical support services, noting that 90% of the Irish Motor Neurone Disease Association's annual budget currently relies on fundraising, up from 86% in 2025. "People we met on the streets were genuinely shocked when we told them the reasons why we have to fundraise," Lehane added. "Their response was to say that it was sad that Motor Neurone sufferers have to depend on fundraisers like Kerry Friends of Motor Neurone to provide the services that they urgently need."

Pedal for Grace returns to Firies for fifth year

The service is delivered by Rachel Foley, founder of Killarney-based business Ancestors from Ireland. Foley holds a Diploma in Family History and brings over 25 years of research experience to the 90-minute personalised consultations. Using historical records including census returns, church registers, civil records, land documents, and immigration archives, Foley works with guests to piece together their family origins, locations, and historical background. Following the session, participants receive a research summary to assist with further investi-

The fifth annual Pedal for Grace community fundraiser will take place in Firies on Saturday, September 5, with organisers aiming to push total funds raised past the €90,000 milestone. Held in honour of local girl Grace O’Sullivan, who lives with Stargardt disease, the event brings together cyclists, walkers, and supporters from across the local community to raise vital funds for Vision Ireland. Over the past four years, the initiative has raised almost €90,000 for the national sight loss charity. Kilcummin man opens pub in Christchurch New Zealand A Kilcummin native living in New Zealand is appealing to the Kerry community for genuine local memorabilia to decorate his new Irish pub and deli on the other side of the world. Cian Curtin and his wife are currently fitting out The Snug, a new venture located in New Brighton, a seaside suburb of Christchurch. By day, the venue will operate as a deli serving Irish staples such as breakfast rolls, chicken fillet rolls, home-made soda bread, and fresh milk. In the evenings, it will transform into a traditional neighbourhood pub featuring Irish food, drink, and live music. Determined to create an authentic atmosphere rather than relying on generic decorations, Cian is calling on Kerry locals, businesses, and sports clubs to send over items with a real story behind them. "Being from Kilcummin, there’ll naturally be plenty of Kerry influence around the place. One thing that’s particularly im-

Corrina Griffin returns to inspire Golf Club juniors The future of junior golf at Killarney Golf & Fishing Club received a welcome boost recently as club member Corrina Griffin returned to her home club to host a coaching workshop and Q&A session for the Junior Girls. Corrina, who started golfing at the club at age eight, progressed through hard work to represent Ireland at Under-16 international level before earning a golf scholarship to the United States. Free heritage events to take place at Ross Castle Ross Castle will host a series of special outdoor events across two weekends in August to celebrate National Heritage Week, offering visitors an opportunity to explore the history and natural beauty of Ross Island. Solar eclipse captivates Ireland Irish people witnessed a partial solar eclipse for the first time since 1999. There won’t be a full solar eclipse in Ireland until 2090. The rare celestial event left people stunned as they watched the incredible spectacle on Wednesday night. The partial solar eclipse covered 90% of the sun. Large crowds gathered at differ-

ent viewing events across the country such as Dublin, Armagh, Cork, Kildare and Belfast. Free eclipse glasses were distributed at the various events. The eclipse began at 6pm with the main coverage happening at 7pm. At the start of the week, videos went viral showing people how to make their own viewer out of a cereal box, which was useful for people who couldn’t purchase a pair of

eclipse glasses. Warnings were issued during the week of how dangerous it was to look at an eclipse without the special glasses, experts warned that sunglasses were not enough to protect the eyes. In a lot of places, the sky was cloudy which impacted the view of the eclipse. A video from Iceland showed the skies falling into complete darkness as they witnessed a full solar eclipse.

Traitors Ireland returns for season two on August 30 Get ready for another season of deception and skullduggery as the Traitors Ireland returns to our television screens. Season two of the reality show will premiere on August 30 on RTÉ One, with a new group of players ready to cause mischief at Slane Castle. The Traitors and Faithful will battle it out against each other to win the prize pot at the end of the game. Derry Girls star Siobhán McSweeney will return to host the show. Last year was the first time we watched The Traitors on Irish screens, and it became a massive hit among the Irish audience. 23-year-old business graduate Kelley Higgins from Letterkenny, Dublin model Oyin Adeyemi (23), and Vanessa Ogbonna (28), a content creator from Tramore won the show, winning over the Traitors. The show also introduced us to Paudie Moloney, Ireland’s latest breakout star, who also went onto to star in Dancing with the Stars Ireland at the start of this year.

Fota invites public to name rhinoceros calf

Fota has welcomed a new addition to their wildlife park after the birth of a male Inian rhino calf, the second Indian rhino to be born in Ireland.

The Indian rhinoceros also known as the greater one-horned rhino, is classified as Vulnerable by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), with an estimated 4,000 individuals remaining in the wild. This announcement follows a remarkable period of conservation breeding successes at Fota Wildlife Park including the births of critically endangered Sumatran tiger cubs and a Nubian giraffe, endangered Asian lion cubs. The mother of the calf is called Maya and she was born in Rotterdam Zoo and is 13

years old. She came to Fota Wildlife Park in early 2020, as part of the ex-situ European Endangered Species Breeding Programme (EEP) from the Botanical Garden Branfér, Nantes in France. The Indian rhinoceros is the largest of Asia's three rhino species. There are five surviving rhinoceros species remaining, with two species native to Africa and three to Asia. Visitors to Fota Wildlife Park are now being invited to help name the young male calf. Entries can be submitted at a collection point in the Serengeti Shop until September 13, and one lucky winner will receive an annual pass to Fota Wildlife Park. The Park is encouraging submissions that reflect the species' native range and cultural heritage.

Annual Tour De Munster cycle a huge success Over 100 cyclists raised vital funds for Down Syndrome Ireland by completing a 600km journey. Over four days, participants travelled 600 kilometres through all six counties of Munster, raising vital funds for the Munster branches of Down Syndrome Ireland (DSI). The annual charity cycle supports essential services and programmes for children and adults with Down syndrome and their families. The Tour began on Thursday, August 6, departing from outside Cork's historic English Market before making its way through Waterford, Tipperary, Limerick, Clare and Kerry, returning to Cork for the traditional finish on St.

Patrick's Hill. Since its inception in 2001, Tour de Munster has raised more than €5.5 million for its charitable beneficiaries, with Down Syndrome Ireland serving as the Tour's primary beneficiary since 2010. Every euro raised helps fund vital services including speech and language therapy, occupational therapy, employment programmes and practical supports that empower children and adults with Down syndrome to lead more independent lives. Along the route, cyclists were warmly welcomed by local communities, schools and Down Syndrome Ireland branches, with many stopping to meet families who benefit directly from the services funded by the Tour.

Trumps elaborate plane switch revealed Trump reportedly hid in a catering cart while switching planes, according to the Washington Post newspaper in America. The paper claimed that US officials feared the President was at risk of Iran who were supposedly planning a strike. Air Force One were carrying journalists and top aides too and they were apparently also at risk, however the newspaper reported that they were not informed of what was happening. Donald Trump told reporters at the Washington Post: "They wanted me to go in a different flight, a different plane

Over seventy classic and retro vehicles gathered under glorious summer skies on Saturday last, for the 19th edition of Ted's Opel Vauxhall Run, raising funds for Irish Dogs for the Disabled.

Based at Coolcower House near Macroom, County Cork, this year’s run welcomed enthusiasts from across all 32 counties of Ireland as well as overseas participants from the Isle of Man. Among the standout vehicles on display, a rare Bedford CA Dormobile camper van

belonging to Paddy Hanifin from Tralee proved to be one of the day’s main attractions. Hanifin's beautifully presented camper van went on to claim the Moriarty’s Central Car Sales Perpetual Cup for Best GM Vehicle. All-Ireland Fleadh success for local Comhaltas branches Musicians and performers from East Kerry enjoyed widespread success at Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann 2026 in Belfast, as branches across the region secured top national honors.

Local branches including CCÉ Glenflesk, CCÉ Cill Áirne, and CCÉ Kilcummin were among the silverware winners at the prestigious week-long festival. Thousands of competitors from across Ireland and around the world took to the stage to compete in music, song, dance, and story-telling. Among the standout local champions were Seán Angland, Colleen Angland, and Olivia Angland of CCÉ Glenflesk, who brought home multiple titles and

top-three places across piano, mouth organ, melodeon, flute slow airs, and duet categories. Michael O'Connor of CCÉ Cill Áirne enjoyed a double victory by claiming first place in both the melodeon and button accordion competitions. Meanwhile, Micheál Healy of CCÉ Kilcummin secured the senior All-Ireland title for melodeon. The local achievements added to a historic week in Belfast, which welcomed over one million visitors for the world’s largest traditional Irish music festival. Following its success, Belfast has been confirmed to host the All-Ireland Fleadh again in 2027.

14.08.2026 They waited for a few minutes until there was no further movement from Auntie Sheila’s room. Jack unlocked the door before he disappeared to go and rummage in the downstairs bathroom. He came back victorious, with a mostly empty bottle of cat shampoo. It smelt slightly odd but they decided it would do. They popped Socks into the sink and tried to wash him down, but were immediately met with resistance. He clawed at Felicity as she held him in the sink, and Jack gently tried to rub the shampoo into his coated fur. It took them a long time and quite a few scratches, but they managed to return him to his regular coat of black, and his socks to a grey-er than usual white. When she let Socks go, he turned and hissed at them before trotting off into the living room, no doubt to sleep on his favourite chair with Auntie Sheila’s nice blankets. Felicity said goodnight to Jack and retreated to her room. She looked down at herself and sighed. She could do with a wash herself – she was completely covered in paint. She was creeping to the bathroom when Auntie Sheila’s bedroom door suddenly opened. She took in the sight before her “What on Earth?” she muttered. “Are you alright?” “Yeah,” Felicity said sheepishly. She was about to explain what had happened when Auntie Sheila cut her off. “As long as you’re alright poppet, and you don’t think I need to know, then I don’t want to know.” Felicity smiled, and Auntie Sheila’s nose wrinkled at the smell of what was probably the cat shampoo. “Gosh, please go shower.” Felicity laughed quietly as her aunt closed the door.

COMPETITION

The next morning, Felicity would have loved to lie in, but the universe had other plans. She jolted awake to the sound of loud banging. She peered out of her window and saw that Mr McCarthy was knocking harshly on the door of Mrs Flaherty’s house. Felicity assumed she opened the door, because all she could hear was Mr McCarthy’s voice as he hollered and raved about the state of his prize roses. Felicity glanced across the street and sure enough, the rose bush that she had rescued Socks from the night before was in sorry shape. She could still see the tipped over paint can, which she now realised was the same colour as Mr McCarthy’s new garden wall. But the paint wasn’t only on the wall. Oh no. It was everywhere. The pavement, the grass, and the prize roses were all drenched in dark grey. Felicity tuned back in to the ruckus outside Mrs Flaherty’s door in time to hear Mr McCarthy shout “I knew you were a conniving meddler June, but I never thought you’d go this far. The Hedgerow Place Association will hear about this, mark my words! Maybe even the Town Council!” With that parting shot, Mr McCarthy stormed away, back towards his own

house and ruined garden. Felicity lunged for her phone and started texting Jack immediately. “We might have caused some trouble …” He got back to her within moments. “What happened?” Felicity filled him in on what she had witnessed. Jack said some very colourful things before he told her that he would be there as soon as possible. They both agreed they’d have to tell Mrs Flaherty about what really happened. It wasn’t fair that she had taken the brunt of Mr McCarthy’s ire when the situation wasn’t her fault.

CONFESSING

The pair approached Mrs Flaherty’s door and knocked. When she opened the door, Mrs Flaherty took one look at them and beckoned them inside. Felicity had never been inside No.15 before, but it’s décor did not surprise her. They were ushed into the kitchen, where paisley wallpaper and the smell of brownies dominated the space. Mrs Flaherty gestured them towards the table whilst she took to making tea. “What sort of trouble brought ye to my door this morning?” she asked over her shoulder. Felicity told her about the dilemma they had found Socks in when they returned back to Auntie Sheila’s yesterday. Mrs Flaherty listened quietly. “And I’m very sorry that he came to yell at you this morning, that wasn’t fair at all. Especially not when the whole situation was due to Socks.” Mrs Flaherty said nothing for a moment before she planted their tea in front of them and took a seat herself. “It’s alright Felicity, better Rodney’s attention isn’t directed at that poor cat. He’s been through enough as it is, by the sounds of it.” Felicity let out a sigh of relief. “Besides,” Mrs Flaherty said with a sly smile, “He’s not wrong, it does almost guarantee my tulips top place in the ‘Best Garden’ category of the competition.” Felicity’s eyes widened and Jack let out a short laugh. “Now, you two skedaddle. I’ve got final preparations to do before the judges arrive.” They did as she bid, returning to Auntie Sheila’s. Later that day they read in the Killarney Advertiser that Mrs Flaherty’s tulips had indeed won ‘Best Garden’, and they only laughed to themselves quietly over dinner while Auntie Sheila shot them a look. “Do you know what, there’s the Cork v Kerry match on next weekend, and it’s being held in Fitzgerald Stadium. We definitely need to go to that. It’s a once-ina-lifetime experience!” Jack said as they finished clearing away their plates. That night as Felicity laid in the room that had slowly transformed from a guestroom into her own bedroom throughout the summer, she thought about the upcoming match, the excitements she’d had, and the adventures still to come. Killarney was the place to be, and the town had secured itself inside her heart. Tune in next week to see what happens ...

This marks only the second meeting between the two clubs and Colin Healy’s second time facing the Bit O'Red in his managerial career. However, it will be a first test against Kerry for Sligo Rovers boss Darren Purse, who was appointed on July 24. The Englishman brings plenty of coaching experience, having managed Cardiff City’s under-21 squad and served

as assistant manager for their senior team between September 2024 and April 2025. Sligo boast a balanced and capable squad, anchored by 41-year-old goalkeeper Richard Brush alongside the experienced Carl McHugh. However, they are still adjusting following the departure of former captain Will Fitzgerald to Shamrock Rovers in late July. Kerry feature plenty of quality of their own, though they remain without star

forward Ryan Kelliher as he continues his recovery from an ACL injury sustained against Cobh Ramblers in May. On a positive note, new signing and Liechtenstein international Simon Lüchinger will look forward to potentially making his debut. In goal, Matt Connor has been in fine form with a string of crucial saves, while penalty shootout hero Harry Halwax remains a strong option on the bench. While a trip to Sligo is always a tough test, Kerry have grown significantly since their last meeting. Currow native crowned Munster Handball champion Killarney handballers continued to blaze a bright path across Munster at the weekend when players from across Munster competed at the high-octane Munster One Wall championships in Cork. | By Con Dennehy Taking place in Conna, just outside Fermoy, the two-day event saw the top players in Munster compete for a number of prestigious titles and a ticket to the All-Ireland semifinals. One of the most stylish performances at the championships came in the Ladies Challenger final when Spa-Killarney player and Currow native Aoife O’Donoghue produced a masterful display of quality handball to defeat Noreen Vaughan from Tipperary. In a tactical and fast flowing competition, O’Donoghue showed great composure and skill to outplay her opponent to win both games impressively 15-5 and 15-4 and in the process win her first Munster title.

There was further success for the Spa-Killarney team, masters in One Wall competitions, when Sarah Dineen claimed the Ladies Masters title with a highly impressive 15-5 and 15-7 victory over Nuala Dunning from Cork. In the semifinal, Dineen defeated Kate Riordan from Cork 15-2 and 15-13. In 2025 At the She’s Ace Ladies handball finals in Galway, Dineen had an impressive victory in the highly competitive Ladies Over 40 B championship. One of the most exciting games of the weekend came in the Diamond Masters final where Brendan O’Donoghue (Spa-Killarney) produced a sizzling display of handball. In the first game he defeated his opponent, Martin Spain from Tipperary 12-15 in an energy sapping

contest. Spain won the second game 15-5 with the contest going to a sudden death third game with the first to reach 11 deemed the winner. Despite a brave and very spirited display, O’Donoghue was unable to stem the challenge of Spain who won the game 11-5. In an exciting semi-final the Spa-Killarney player took on the challenge of Brendan Hurley from Cork, winner of the opening game 15-7. O’Donoghue won the second game 15-10 and produced an exceptional performance to win the tie breaker 118. O’Donoghue, a founding member of the Spa-Killarney club, became the first Spa-Killarney man to win an All-Ireland Handball medal. He achieved this honour in the highly ranked Master's 55 B final in 2019. In the Junior B competition, Eoin O’Donoghue (Spa-Killarney) reached the semi-final stages with an impressive quarter final victory over Chris Hand (Waterford)

Housing Assistance Programme (HAP) What is the Housing Assistance Payment? The Housing Assistance Payment (HAP) is a social housing support for people who have a long-term housing need. HAP is provided by your local authority. If you are on HAP, your local authority pays your rent directly to your landlord and you pay a weekly HAP rent contribution to your local authority, based on your income and ability to pay. You must find the rented accommodation yourself and the rent your landlord charges must be within the limits for your household type in your local authority’s area. You can take up full-time employment and still get HAP. Who can get the HAP payment? To get the HAP, you must be on your local authority’s housing list. This means that you qualify for social housing support. To qualify for social housing support, you must: • Have a legal right to remain in the State on a long-term basis. People who have temporary protection, such as Ukrainians fleeing the war, cannot apply for social housing as their right to remain is short-term. • Be eligible for social housing. Your income must be below a certain amount, and you must not have suitable alternative accommodation. • Be in need of social housing KERRY COUNTY COUNCIL

How does the HAP scheme work? You find your own private rented accommodation within the HAP rent limits. The local authority will not find the accommodation for you. In general, the rent must be within the HAP rent limits for your household size and the area you live in. However, your local authority can go above the HAP rent limits, if you can’t find accommodation within the limits. They do this on a case-by-case basis. They are able to: • Go up to 35% above the rent limits • Increase the HAP rates for a single person to the rates allowed for couples The HAP limits for Kerry County Council area are as follows. (See table) If you have 4 or more children in your household, contact your local authority to discuss your HAP rate. You may be able to claim HAP if you are sharing accommodation with your landlord. You cannot be discriminated against when renting because you are getting HAP. This means that landlords cannot state that HAP is not accepted when advertising accommodation. The local authority pays your landlord each month and you pay a weekly rent contribution to your local authority. However, you are not a local authority tenant. The rental agreement is between you and your landlord, and your tenancy is covered by residential ten€200

ancies legislation. This means that you have certain rights and responsibilities, and so does your landlord. The accommodation must meet minimum standards for rented housing. Your landlord must have current evidence that they are tax compliant. How much rent do I pay the local authority? The weekly rent contribution that you pay is based on the ‘differential rent scheme’ for your local authority. This scheme links the rent contribution you pay to your household income and your ability to pay. If your income increases so does your rent contribution, and if your income decreases, the weekly rent contribution decreases. What if my landlord requires a deposit? If your landlord needs a deposit, you have to pay this yourself. The local authority does not pay it for you. In certain circumstances, you may be able to get assistance from the Department of Social Protection to help pay your deposit. If you are in emergency homeless accommodation, your local authority may help with a deposit. What if I need to end my HAP tenancy? You will be expected to stay in your HAP accommodation for at least 2 years. In some situations, you may be able to ap€380

ply for a new HAP payment somewhere else. For example, if you are offered a job in another town or if your family grows too large for the property. You need to contact your local authority if you are thinking of moving. If you or your landlord wants to end a residential tenancy, you must both follow the rules for ending a tenancy. How do I apply for HAP? If you are not yet on your local authority’s housing list, you need to apply for social housing support before you apply for HAP. If you are already on the housing list, you can: • Apply for HAP online • Get a HAP application form from your local authority You should only apply for HAP when you have found suitable accommodation, or if you are already in private rented accommodation and qualify to transfer to HAP. If you are in any doubt about if your tenancy arrangement qualifies for HAP, check with your local authority. Sligo Rovers v Kerry FC Saturday 7.45pm The Showgrounds The last time Kerry met Sligo Rovers in the FAI Cup, the teams produced a contest for the ages with the Kingdom coming from 0-3 down to secure an unforgettable 4-3 win in Mounthawk Park. Daniel Okwute’s winner right at the end of extra time 12 months ago is one of the highlights of the club’s short but eventful history. It might prove difficult to replicate that level of drama this time around but beating top-flight opposition once again would be massive for Colin Healy’s ever-improving team. Their league form and their remarkable penalty shootout win over LOI giants Shelbourne in Round 2 suggests they have a good chance of achieving that goal. An excellent run of form has left Kerry in sixth place in the First Division, just two points behind Longford Town and Cobh Ramblers, who are currently joint fourth.

Second to fifth qualify for the end-of-season promotion playoffs. Kerry had been on a run of three consecutive wins before coming up against the team in first place, Cork City, last Friday night. Having already beaten the league leaders earlier in the season, the visitors started confidently at Turners Cross and they took the lead in the 33rd minute when Cian Bargary scored a wondergoal all of his own making. He challenged in the air for Matt Connor’s long and high kick, won possession, and executed a wonderful lobbed half volley from the corner of the box to send the travelling fans wild. It wasn’t to be for the noisy neighbours as Cork eventually equalised via a deflected goal in the 77th minute, and further pressure finally told at the death as Seáni McGuire and Darragh Crowley made it 3-1. Sligo Rovers also lost last time out; they fell to a 2-0 defeat to Derry City at the Brandywell, a result which leaves them six points adrift at the foot of the Premier Division table. They beat Limerick outfit Janesboro 4-0 in the previous round of the cup. Elsewhere in the FAI Cup this weekend, UCD host Derry City, Bohs play Longford Town, and Dublin rivals St Patrick’s Athletic welcome Shamrock Rovers to Richmond Park.

It’s time for the 99% to shine as club season gets underway | By Adam Moynihan

The intercounty season has ended and Kerry’s defeat to Mayo has been consigned to the history books. What better way to shake off that All-Ireland final hangover than by immersing oneself in some more football? As of last weekend the Kerry Club Championships are up and fully running. After taking back seat to the 1% for over half the year, now it’s time for the 99% to shine. As enjoyable as county football has been since the rule changes, and as entertaining it is to follow the exploits of the very best elite players in the country, there is still something extra special about club football. The crowds might be smaller and the stakes might be lower, relatively speaking, but the action is still top class. We’re fortunate in Kerry to have so many brilliant footballers operating at the highest level but we’re also blessed with incredible talent in our club game. We probably take the 99% for granted

The beauty of club football is that it brings a degree of unpredictability and an element of surprise. but realistically you could go to any local match and watch some seriously talented guys. More often than not there will be at least one player who might be pretty much unknown outside of Kerry but could easily be a marquee intercounty star if he happened to be born in another county. of Gaelic football. Teams are coached to a serious standard nowadays but there is generally more freedom, more off the cuff football, more mistakes, and more randomness in the Club Championships. It all lends itself to an eminently fun spectacle. I was at Gneeveguilla v Fossa in the Intermediate on Sunday and it was a great watch. The level of point kicking was very high. With David Clifford on show that comes as no surprise, but Emmett

O’Shea gave him a run for his money with a couple of his efforts from distance. At the other end, Gneeveguilla full forward Shane O’Sullivan was responsible for the score of the day when he fired over a buzzer beater from miles out at the end of the first half. Fossa pulled away at the end so it wasn’t an absolute classic but it was entertaining nevertheless. The fact that all games are available on Clubber has added to the competitions’ profile and prestige. Highlights on social media give everyone a flavour of what’s going on around the county. I’m sure they give the players themselves a boost as well, knowing that thousands of people are seeing and talking about their scores, not just at home but amongst the diaspora all over the world. The only problem is there are too many games for one man to watch. This weekend alone there’s standout ties like Dingle v Crokes, Kenmare v Stacks, Rathmore v Spa, Listowel v Legion, Glenflesk v Rahillys, Glenbeigh-Glencar v Fossa and Firies v Kilcummin, and that’s just the Senior and Intermediate. Maybe there’s a challenge in that – and an article. ‘What I learned from watching every Kerry Club Championship match last weekend.’ Clear my schedule. I’m going in.

Green looks good on Kerry’s top level international athletes | By Eamonn Fitzgerald This week has been a busy one for local sports stars. The European Athletic Championships have been in progress all week in Birmingham, and we wish the best of luck to local star athletes Sarah Leahy (Killarney Valley AC) and David Kenny (Farranfore Maine Valley AC). Sarah was attempting to qualify from Wednesday's early heats and the semi-final listed at 8.40pm Irish time. The final was scheduled for last evening at 9.50pm. Will Rhasidat Adeleke also be in that race? Sarah is the Irish indoor record holder of 50m in 6.4 seconds. Blink and she explodes out of the blocks. She will also run in the Irish singlet for the 4x100m relay team. You can follow David in the Men's Half-Marathon Walk at 7.30pm tomorrow on RTÉ 2. The favourites come from Spain, Italy, Germany and Poland. However, David's form is excellent as he takes on Spaniards Alvaro Martin and Diego Garcia Carrrera, Massimo Stano from Italy and Christopher Linke from Germany. A top five finish will be very good, and if all goes well, he may be in the medals.

The Irish slogan comes to mind: ‘Is fearr rith mhaith na droch-sheasamh’ (a good run is better than a bad stand). Here’s hoping for medals won by two brilliant local athletes.

SÉAMUS WELDON MEMORIAL BLITZ

The Clifford brothers, David and Paudie, have really put the Fossa GAA club to the forefront, and tomorrow, Saturday, the progressive club host an all-day football blitz for under 10s. This inaugural Séamus Weldon Memorial U10 football blitz will be spectacular. It features 40 teams from all over Ireland and is a tribute to honour the late great Fossa man Séamus Weldon. I spoke with his son James earlier this week. James, the well-known and highly regarded head coach of the Irish Women’s Basketball national team, said: “The whole family are extremely grateful to Fossa GAA club for remembering our late father Séamus in such a fitting way. Séamus loved to mentor and coach at all levels right up to the senior team. But definitely what he enjoyed the most was helping the underage players in the club develop and reach their potential. This was very evident after his passing, with so many of his past players reaching out to the family.

“Our late mother Eileen, his great friend Mick Myers and himself were a major driving force in the fundraising efforts for the club’s grounds in Lackabane. “Seamus’ sister Rita will travel from his native Meath with up to 20 other family members to attend on Saturday and we are all looking forward to seeing a great day of fun and football with the stars of the future on show.” Best of luck to all as they honour an outstanding Fossa clubman. It will be a real spectacle on a very sunny day.

I was delighted to watch Cork reclaim the All-Ireland Senior Camogie Championship with a second-half surge that saw them dethrone Galway by 2-14 to 0-19 at Croke Park. They will never forget last year’s disappointment of missing out on the threein-a-row against the same opposition, but second-half goals from Saoirse McCarthy and Orlaith Cahalane saw them get their hands on the O’Duffy Cup for the 31st time. No joy for the men earlier this summer. Maybe next year the MacCarthy Cup will return to Leeside, but Limerick still look unbeatable.

The intercounty hurling, football, LGFA and camogie competitions have been completed as the governing bodies were determined to rush off the major competitions and finals in Croke Park by Sunday last. On Wednesday of this week Leeds and Man Utd played a pre-season friendly at Gaelic games HQ. Why is Croker without its own games until December for the Leinster Club finals? Answer: one word – money. Here’s what the Croke Park schedule looks like: • AUGUST 12: Manchester United v Leeds (soccer) • AUGUST 22-23: The Weeknd (two-night stadium concerts) • AUGUST 30: Bon Jovi (stadium concert) • SEPTEMBER 5: Katie Taylor v Flora Pili (boxing) • DECEMBER 12: Croke Park will be back in use to stage the Leinster Club finals. Wednesday’s match featured understrength teams for what was the first soccer game I can recall since the World Cup playoff in 2009: France v Ireland. I would prefer to follow Kerry FC in the LOI at Mounthawk Park. Even Roy Keane was impressed with Kerry as they defeated his former club, Cobh Ramblers, last week. Kerry are on a great run, unbeaten at home for the past 10 games. Best of luck tomorrow evening in the FAI Cup tie away to Sligo Rovers, who will be hell-bent on revenge. Sligo lost to Kerry in Tralee in last season's cup tie. I was fortunate to witness that unbridled Kerry, when they came back from the dead to win. They went on to play the famed Shamrock Rovers in the semi-final. With a capacity of over 82,000 at Croke Park, the money just rolled in for Leeds v Man Utd. Adult tickets prices ranged

Anything but GAA games in Croker from €50 to €85 depending on the location. Premium sold at €155. That was all legitimate. But, of course, the black market has thrived with some seats, especially in the lower Hogan Stand, fetching prices like €368. The Mayo v Kerry stand tickets were €100 each, and for the All-Ireland LGFA final Kerry v Galway it was €30 for adults and a whole family price tag was €70. For that, you had three All-Ireland finals on the same day in Croker. Now that was value, and the same price structure continued for last weekend’s camogie finals Why the rush, when general consensus seems to be by players, managers and supporters that a return to the more appealing September dates of the past is a clear preference? The Under 20 competitions were played when the students of that age cohort were facing end-ofcollege-year exams. In fact, the finals were fixed for midweek, when it was very difficult for that age group in college to juggle exam commitments with playing midweek. The man who facilitated the opening of Croke Park’s doors was Kilcummin (now Fossa) man Seán Kelly. The motion was passed during his presidency of the GAA and Croke Park was officially opened to “foreign games” in 2007, when the GAA suspended Rule 42 to allow rugby and soccer redevelopment of Lansdowne Road and the building of the Aviva Stadium. The first foreign game played in Croke Park on 24 February 2007 was Ireland v France in the Six Nations rugby. There were also American football games such as Chicago Bears v Pittsburgh Steelers.

Hardliners cringed, especially recalling the atrocities of Bloody Sunday. Was Kelly correct in opening up Croker to activities other than GAA? I believe he was, but the respective financial controllers at HQ opened the door to a gravy train. I realise and commend the GAA for its support for GAA clubs countrywide with generous grants. However, it has driven the current split-season, putting huge pressure on elite intercounty players and with the glamorous summer dates for big attendances closed off early, other sports get the main publicity. Furthermore, the weaker counties in hurling and football have finished their competitions several months ago, if they did not progress in the Tailteann Cup, Christy Ring Cup etc. The glamour competitions at county levels are the senior, intermediate and junior championships, which for the most part got underway last weekend. Those key competitions could lead to All-Ireland Club finals and glory, as happened last season with Dingle, An Ghaeltacht and Ballymac. Round 2 games are scheduled for this weekend, and there will hardly be a free weekend, especially for the in-

tercounty players if their home clubs are successful. To make it more difficult in Kerry the County Championships follow on. Player burnout and more and more injuries. Is that the root cause of far too many Kerry stars sustaining long-term injuries and arriving at All-Ireland day less than 100% fit, having gambled on playing without sufficient time to recover fully? There are other causes for so many injuries, such as the training schedule for players under the new rules in football and even in hurling, where athleticism is the sine qua non to make a success at intercounty and also at club level. Too fast, too much, disregard for proper recovery time for amateur players, who also have to work full time for a living. That is surely one of the main reasons why players in certain work situations cannot give the commitment needed. How many farmers are intercounty players? How many doctors in busy work situations where they may be the only medic practising alone in a rural area are intercounty players? The same goes for vets, unless they are in a practice with a group of vets, such as Barry Dan of Dingle and Kerry. Check the occupations of all intercounty teams, and you will note the proliferation of teachers. Why? Not because they are better players, but shorter working days and generous holidays affords then the opportunities to combine work with sport commitments. For others it becomes a juggling act, and the consequences too often are burnout and fatigue, physical and mental. No pep in their step. The GPA has not done enough to protect the health of its members.

Strong showing by Killarney Valley in National League Killarney Valley AC made the final of the AAI National Track and Field League which was held at the Morton Stadium in Santry, Dublin last Sunday. There are over 400 clubs in Ireland with the top 20 clubs in the concluding stages of the National League. What was very special and with great credit due to the club not only did they advance into the Premier League from Division One but to also field a women's team and a men's team. In total 37 athletes from the club made up the teams with high scoring performances all round.

The women's captain is Keelie O'Connor and men's captain is Jordan Lee. One participant per club performs in the various disciplines and the points are accredited per placings. The women's team came in 5th place and with only a couple of points could have secured the bronze medal. The men's team placed in 6th place and within reach of a medal. This high performance is due to the great work from the club, its committee, the high level coaching team, the high standard of elite athletes within the club and its many supporters and volunteers. This performance highlights the advance of the club on the national stage and potential for the future.

booked their place in the East Kerry U14 Division 1 League Final after a thrilling one-point victory over Rathmore in an enthralling semi-final played away from home. Having been defeated by the same opposition in the group stages just a week earlier, Legion faced a difficult challenge. However, the team showed tremendous character from the outset, taking the game to Rathmore with confidence and purpose. Some excellent passages of attacking football saw Legion build a deserved five-point lead by half-time. As expected, Rathmore responded strongly after the break and gradually chipped away at the deficit. With just three minutes remaining, the home side struck for a crucial goal to edge two points in front, setting up a dramatic finish. True to their never-say-die attitude, Legion refused to give in. Displaying outstanding teamwork and composure, they worked the ball patiently up the field before finding the back of the net with the final attack of normal time to reclaim the lead. Rathmore threw everything forward during injury time, but the Legion defence stood tall, producing a determined rearguard effort to secure a memorable victory. It was a fantastic game of football played in a superb sporting spirit, and credit must go to Rathmore for a hugely entertaining contest. Thanks also to referee Evan Horan for his excellent officiating and to the parents, families and supporters whose vocal encouragement spurred the team on throughout. Dr Crokes GAA CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP: Dr. Crokes 0:21 Spa 2:11. We got our club championship campaign off to a winning start on Friday last with a hard-fought victory over Spa in the Fitzgerald Stadium. We made a bright start and quickly settled into the game, putting pressure on the Spa defence and taking some excellent scores. Despite Spa

finding the net in the opening half, we continued to keep the scoreboard ticking over and went into the interval with a narrow lead. Half-time: Dr. Crokes 0-12, Spa 1-06. The second half saw Crokes continue to work hard across the field, with the defence limiting Spa’s opportunities while the forwards continued to add to the scoreboard. Spa battled hard and threatened at times, but Crokes remained composed and maintained their advantage. With the game entering its closing stages, we showed great determination to see it out and continued to find scores when they were needed most. Fossa settled and scores from Emmett O’Shea, David and Paudie Clifford, Ted O’Gorman and Jack Hallissey reduced the deficit to just one point by the 26th minute but Gneeveguilla finished the half strong and kicked a two pointer on the stroke of half time to lead at the break, 0-14 to 0-9. The second half started with Gneeveguilla scoring a goal in the 3rd minute to go eight points ahead, David Clifford exploded into this game as Fossa began to get control around the middle third. A brace of brilliant two pointers from David Clifford and two excellent scores from Harry Kelly had Fossa within one point of Gneeveguilla again by the 15th minute. Played in Brosna on Sunday last, Kilcummin seniors had a seven-point victory over Ballydonoghue despite trailing by two points at half time in this round 1 clash. We trailed by 4 points after 13 minutes with Mark O’Shea having opened the scoring after 30 seconds. Gary O’Leary and Mikey Casey responded with two points but despite a further Sean O’Leary point, we trailed by five points with 5 minutes to go to half time. However a late rally saw Mikey Casey kick two points and Cian Foley one all from play to leave us trailing 0-09 to 0-07 at the break. After 10 minutes of the second half we were level courtesy of points from Gary O’Leary and another from substitute Matt Keane. Two- pointers from Brendan Kealy and Mark O’Shea added to further points from James Nagle and Cian Foley consolidated our position and saw us six points to the good with five minutes left. Glenflesk GAA INTERMEDIATE CHAMPIONSHIP: Beaufort 4:20 Glenflesk 3:15 From the moment Kieran Kennedy slipped through the Glenflesk defence to score a goal in the opening minute, Beaufort never looked likely to lose this opening round County Intermediate Championship fixture at Dr Crokes Park, with a terrific all-round display. Kennedy wriggled beyond some feeble Glenflesk tackling to grab the opening goal soon after the throw-in. A free from Tommy Bowler opened Glenflesk's account. Beaufort, though, were well on top at midfield, and more quick passing ended with Kennedy finding the net with the help of a post. More direct play ended with a point from Fergal Hallissey. The outstanding Sean O'Brien then struck over a superb 2 pointer. John Kelliher then got a much needed 2 pointer for Glenflesk. Fionn Kennedy then blocked a goal bound shot from Darragh Roche. Another brilliant catch from O'Brien started a move that ended with Kennedy grabbing his third goal. Glenflesk were really struggling to create chances, although Killian O'Sullivan kicked a great 2 pointer. By half time, they trailed by 12 points, after being overrun in the opening half. An early point from Dylan Roche, straight from the throw-in, showed Glenflesk's intent to fight back. Beaufort continued to control matters,

though, and Kevin Coffey got his side's fourth goal of the game after coming on as a sub. Glenflesk got some small hope when Dylan Roche blasted in a fierce shot that found the net. Soon after, Darragh Roche goaled from a penalty. Sloppy play from Beaufort then allowed Dylan Roche to find the corner of the net for his second goal. Beaufort, though, prevented Glenflesk getting any more goals, and a red card for Darragh Roche ended Glenflesk's hopes of an unlikely comeback, leaving them with a must win game against Kerins O'Rahillys this Sunday 16th at 4pm in Glenflesk. INTERNATIONALS: Killarney Swimming Club was delighted to welcome some international swimming visitors to Killarney last month. Terry Trofimuk, former President of Killarney Swim Club in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, and a current swimming referee, visited Killarney with his son Charlie, a varsity swimmer at the University of Ottawa. Despite the two Killarney swimming clubs being separated by more than 6,500km, there was plenty of common ground as the visitors met with members of Killarney Swimming Club to exchange stories and experiences from the swimming world. The occasion was marked with an exchange of club swimming caps and hats, providing a lovely reminder of the friendships and connections that swimming can create across the world.

Killarney Salmon & Trout Angling Club OUTING: Our second juvenile outings to Lough Barfinnihy, is being held on Friday evening 21st of August. The competition on the night will be for our juvenile cup, the Scruffy's Cup. The event is kindly sponsored by Inland Fisheries Ireland, promoting angling in Ireland. Fishing will commence at 6pm and we will call time at 8pm - To facilitate us to get permits for the evening, can a parent or guardian that will have children planning to attend please contact any committee member confirming attendance so that we can add the child to the list, alternatively please email kstac1982@gmail.com with details, especially a contact number. As with our earlier outing in July, we again hope that this very warm spell will have passed by the 21st of August but will have to abide by any regulations that may come into force at the lake as a result of prolonged weather spell, so will need to keep any attendees advised accordingly.

East/West - 1st Sheila Spillane and Bridie Brosnan, 2nd Eithne Coffey and Hazel O'Connell, 3rd Margaret O'Sullivan and Anne Wrenn. Congratulations to all the winners. SUMMER BRIDGE continues on Mondays at the Monastery School, New Road at 7pm. All are welcome.
