Park rangers to get power to issue on-the-spot fines following fires National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) rangers will soon have the power to issue significant on-the-spot fines to people whose carelessness causes fires or breaks rules in Killarney National Park, following the announcement of new government legislation. Under the proposed National Parks Bill, rangers will be given stronger enforcement authority to penalise illegal activities, such as lighting fires or using disposable barbecues in vulnerable wild areas. The measures follow a major wildfire at 5 Mile Bridge that destroyed 17 hectares of heath, bog, and ancient oak woodland
after burning for seven days. Announced by Minister of State for Nature, Heritage and Biodiversity Christopher O’Sullivan TD, the legislation will place Killarney National Park on a dedicated statutory footing, establishing nature conservation and restoration as its primary management goal.
Minister O’Sullivan stated that the law comes at a critical time, pointing to recent fires in Killarney and the Wicklow Mountains as proof that park rangers need tougher powers to tackle reckless behaviour. Divisional Manager for Killarney National Park, Eamonn Meskell, welcomed the measures, noting that the framework will strengthen local protection for native woodlands and wildlife while supporting long-term conservation efforts. NPWS Director General Niall Ó Donnchú added that modernising statutory powers will provide essential tools for staff
working to safeguard the 10,900-hectare park.
MINISTER MEETS EMERGENCY FIRE CREWS Minister Christopher O’Sullivan visited Killarney National Park to meet members of the emergency fire crew and thank them for their efforts in containing the recent wildfire at Five-Mile Bridge. NPWS staff worked around the clock over seven days to suppress the blaze, which burned through dry heath, wet heath, blanket bog, and native oak woodland.

Gleneagle Arena leads tributes to Glen Hansard The Gleneagle Hotel and Arena has led local tributes following the tragic death of Irish music icon Glen Hansard, who passed away this week at the age of 56.
Orienteering Festival attracts record attendance
The former frontman of The Frames and Academy Award-winning songwriter died in a motorcycle accident in Dublin on July 29. He had been due to perform a solo show at the Gleneagle Arena on Friday, November 6. In a statement released by the venue, a spokesperson for the Gleneagle expressed deep sadness over the loss of the
renowned artist. They extended sincere condolences to his family, friends, and fellow musicians, noting that his music left a lasting mark on audiences around the world. Tributes have poured in from across the Irish music industry, with the Irish Music Rights Organisation (IMRO) expressing profound shock at his sudden passing. IMRO Chair Tom Dunne praised Hansard’s generational talent and his huge role in shaping the Irish music scene, from his early days busking on Grafton Street to his global success with "Falling Slowly".
Killarney hosted the largest orienteering festival ever held on Irish soil this past week, bringing over 2,000 international competitors and generating more than 10,000 bed nights for the local area.
Organised by Kerry Orienteers, the week-long event drew participants from 35 countries to take on a series of technical courses across local mountain terrain, indoor spaces, and town streets. Organisers claimed the gathering was the largest of its kind globally. The festival kicked off at St Brendan’s College with Ireland’s first-ever indoor orienteering event. Competitors then moved into the wild for five days of open mountain challenges around Glenflesk and Kilgarvan, tackling the rugged slopes of Crohane Mountain and Black Lakes. The action will draw to a close today
(Friday) following a high-speed urban street event through the centre of town. Athlete ages ranged from under 10 to over 80, with Switzerland bringing the largest international group of nearly 300 entrants, alongside major teams from the UK, Finland, France, and Czechia. Brendan O’Brien of Kerry Orienteers said the club was thrilled with the turnout, noting that the week provided a massive economic boost for local accommodation and tourism while putting Killarney on the global orienteering map.
Huge queues highlight severity of rental crisis The scale of Killarney’s housing shortage was laid bare this week as between 50 and 70 prospective tenants queued down Fleming’s Lane for a viewing of a single rental property. The crowd gathered on Wednesday evening for a scheduled 5pm viewing of a two-bedroom apartment, leaving the managing estate agent struggling to cope with the surge of interest. Desperate home-seekers lined the narrow town-centre lane, underscoring the extreme demand and severe lack of available long-term accommodation across the area. One local woman, who is currently
couch-surfing while trying to secure a home, expressed shock at the sheer size of the crowd. However, she noted that the condition of the property itself was deeply disappointing, describing it as barely rentable. She pointed out that the apartment was in bad need of a coat of paint, suffered from visible damage, and raised cleanliness concerns. Despite the poor condition of the unit, the woman admitted that the overwhelming competition meant securing the keys would be nearly impossible regardless. The situation highlights a growing trend in the local market, where prospective tenants face steep competition even for properties requiring significant maintenance.

Racecourse launches first student day in October Killarney Racecourse has partnered with radio station SPIN South West to host Kerry’s biggest student race day this autumn.

The back-to-college event is scheduled for Monday, October 5, combining horse racing with live entertainment. SPIN South West will bring its SPIN House Party Stage to the venue, featuring performances from local DJs. To accommodate attendees from across Munster, Killarney Racecourse will organise dedicated bus transport running directly from key locations across Kerry,
Cork, and Limerick. Additionally, The Gleneagle Group has signed on as the official hospitality partner, offering accommodation options for visitors travelling to the event. Kerry TD Michael Cahill has called for urgent steps to protect water quality in Lough Leane and Muckross Lake following recent algae blooms. The Fianna Fáil deputy raised the issue through a Parliamentary Question after Kerry County Council erected warning signage around affected areas. In a Ministerial response, it was confirmed that the EPA maintains an open compliance investigation into the Killarney Wastewater Treatment Plant, which remains on the agency's Priority Areas List. While Uisce Éireann has begun strategic assessments for a major upgrade, construction work is not projected to finish until after 2030. Deputy Cahill expressed concern over the timeframe, stating that interim
improvements must be implemented while long-term works are progressed. He stressed that delays risk harming the local environment, biodiversity, and tourism economy. The response also confirmed that Lough Leane and Muckross Lake are included in the Ross Bay Priority Area for Action under the Water Action Plan 2024. Killarney Garda Station welcomes new recruit Killarney Garda Station is set to welcome a new probationary Garda following the latest graduation ceremony at the Garda College in Templemore. The new recruit is part of a four-member allocation assigned to the Kerry Division from the graduating class of 206 new officers. The remaining three probationers will be deployed to Lis-
towel and Tralee. The addition will boost local policing capacity and operational support in Killarney, strengthening frontline presence across the town and surrounding areas. Nationally, 206 new Gardaí,142 men and 64 women, swore their oaths before being assigned to stations nationwide, marking the largest single graduating class since 2019.
CCTV system moves closer to tender: Council comfirmes Plans for a long-awaited community-based CCTV system in Killarney town centre have taken a major step forward, with Kerry County Council expected to publish a tender for the project in the coming weeks. The local authority confirmed that significant groundwork has now been completed, including obtaining approval from An Garda Síochána, completing a Data Protection Impact Assessment (DPIA), and finalising technical specifications. The progress follows an official response
in Dáil Éireann to a Parliamentary Question raised by Kerry TD Michael Cahill, who has repeatedly pressed the Minister for Justice and local officials for updates on the long-delayed scheme. The introduction of modern CCTV is strongly supported by local businesses, residents, and the Killarney Chamber of Tourism & Commerce to help deter criminal activity and support Garda policing. Once the tender process is completed, the installation will move ahead under updated national guidelines for community CCTV schemes.

Sem student wins gold at National Jiu-Jitsu finals
St Brendan’s College student Franciszek (Frank) Jakubowski has claimed a title on the national martial arts stage after winning a gold medal and championship belt at NAGA Ireland, one of the country's premier Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu competitions.
The 17-year-old Killarney resident fought through five matches to secure first place in his category at the event. The Fifth Year student trains locally at BJJ Killarney under coach Wilson, who guides his daily skill development. He also credits his older brother Filip, who competes in Cork, for helping him fine-tune his technique, prepare for tournaments, and support his athletic journey.
Jakubowski is a regular competitor on the Irish and international circuit, having built up a strong record across major events. Along with his latest NAGA Ireland belt and gold medal, his recent achievements include two gold medals and a silver medal at the Irish Open, four gold medals at the Grapple Series, and a gold and silver medal performance at the Ground Game Cup in Suwałki.

Arbutus Hotel celebrates 100 years in business The Arbutus Hotel on College Street is celebrating a landmark centenary this month, marking 100 years of continuous family ownership and service in Killarney. The hotel’s story began back in 1926 when Tim Buckley and his wife Julia first opened its doors. Having saved the funds to purchase the property Tim had long admired, the couple established a business that would go on to become one of the town's best-loved hospitality institutions. A century later, a direct link back to the couple remains intact throughout the building. Much of the original Celtic Deco furniture and fittings chosen by Tim are still on display for guests today. The milestone was celebrated during a special gathering hosted at the hotel
on Wednesday, July 15. Members of the Buckley family reflected on the establishment's rich history and what reaching 100 years of family stewardship means for both the hotel and the local community, drawing warm applause from those in attendance. The event was attended by local business leaders as well as Mayor of Killarney Cllr John O'Donoghue, who praised the ongoing contribution of long-standing local enterprises. Killarney Chamber of Tourism & Commerce President Johnny McGuire paid tribute to the Buckley family and the hotel's remarkable legacy. "The Arbutus is woven into the story of this town," he said. "To celebrate their centenary among our own members felt entirely right, and today's turnout shows the strength of the Chamber network here in Killarney."
Deer Lodge’s perfect score in mental health inspection Deer Lodge on St Margaret’s Road has achieved 100% compliance in the latest annual report published by the Mental Health Commission (MHC). The purpose-built 40-bed recovery unit met all full requirements across statutory rules, regulations, and codes of practice evaluated by inspectors. The result marks a major turnaround for the facility, which had recorded non-compliances in previous annual inspections. Inspectors praised the management team and staff for fostering a culture of
positivity and delivering high-quality, person-centred care. Feedback from residents was also highlighted, with patients expressing high satisfaction with staff support, clean facilities, and access to therapeutic activities such as music, art, and community initiatives. The Commission highlighted a shortterm admission bed initiative introduced at the facility for psychiatry of later life community residents. The project provides temporary respite care designed to prevent hospital admissions and support local families.

Ukrainian exhibition brings 'Towel of Unity' to Killarney The Ukrainian community in Kerry presented the international outdoor exhibition “The Towel of Unity – The Towel of Victory” at St Mary’s Church on Saturday.
New art exhibition at Killarney House during August
Organised by Future of Ukrainian Nation (FOUN Kerry), led by Chairperson Natalia Eismont and coordinator Iryna Samborska, the cultural initiative celebrated Ukrainian heritage while fostering solidarity between Ireland and Ukraine. At the centre of the display was a 166-metre embroidered towel, known traditionally as a rushnyk. Created by Ukrainian communities across dozens of countries, each section represents global resilience and connection. The project was original-
ly founded by Andrii Yatsenko in Estonia, with his wife Svitlana joining individual pieces from around the world into one continuous artwork. A key moment of the Killarney event saw the official addition of the embroidered piece crafted by the Ukrainian community in Ireland to the master banner. The outdoor exhibition offered local residents and visitors a chance to learn about traditional Ukrainian customs and the symbolic meaning behind the rushnyk, which represents protection, heritage, and unity. FOUN Kerry expressed gratitude to local authorities, clergy, and the Kerry community for their ongoing support and warm welcome.
Killarney House & Gardens will host a new exhibition this August celebrating the landscapes, heritage, and character of County Kerry through the eyes of local artists. Titled Natural Kerry, the exhibition runs from August 2 to August 28, featuring a diverse collection of original artworks inspired by the county's dramatic mountain ranges, lakes, and historic landmarks. Former Mayor of Killarney and Chairperson of Killarney Tidy Towns, Michael Gleeson, will officially open the exhibition on Saturday, August 8 at 3:00pm. Members of the public are invited to attend the official launch, where refreshments will be served. The featured works have been created
by members of the Tralee Art Group, one of Kerry’s longest-established visual arts organisations, founded in 1979. Caitriona Foley, Chairperson of the group, expressed excitement about returning to the historic Killarney venue and extended sincere thanks to Diana Fawsitt, Pat Dawson, and the local staff at Killarney House & Gardens for their support in staging the event. Original artworks and prints displayed throughout the residency will be available for purchase.

Kerry Airport records strongest ever passenger numbers Kerry Airport delivered the strongest performance in its history in 2025, welcoming a record 440,367 passengers, a 5.5% increase on the previous year. The figures were presented at the airport's Annual General Meeting held at
the Ballygarry Estate, Hotel and Spa, where shareholders formally welcomed the 2025 Annual Report. The financial report confirmed an operating profit after taxation of €840,979 for the period, compared to €1,373,300 in the previous year.

Local farms selected for new social farming respite programme Several farms across the wider Killarney area have been selected to take part in Kerry Social Farming’s newly launched summer respite programme for people with disabilities The initiative was officially opened by Minister for Children, Disability, Equality and Kerry TD Norma Foley at Patrick and Mary B Murphy’s dairy farm in Ballycarbery West, Cahirciveen. In total, the project provides up to 100 people with disabilities the opportunity to participate in hands-on farming experiences and supportive social outlets. Among the initial intake, 15 participants are based in Killarney, two in Beaufort, and one each in Kilcummin and Glenflesk. The scheme forms part of the HSE’s €5 million Summer Respite Initiative. Along with day-to-day farm activities, participants will enjoy group outings, including visits to agri-tourism enterprises, livestock marts, county fairs, and local scenic spots. Speaking at the launch, Minister Foley said: “It is an honour to launch this summer respite programme funded by the Depart-
ment of Children, Disability and Equality via the HSE and delivered by Kerry Social Farming. This programme gives people with disabilities hands-on experience of the joys of being on a farm, supporting their wellbeing and enhancing their quality of life. Particular thanks to Joe McCrohan and the SKD team, Patrick and Mary B for their hospitality, all the host farmers and the participants themselves who bring such energy, enjoyment and fun to the programme.” Minister Foley also praised the growth of Kerry Social Farming since its establishment 13 years ago, noting that the organisation expanded from delivering 76 social farming days in 2013 to 2,500 in 2025. The launch was attended by Noel Spillane, Chief Executive of South Kerry Development Partnership; Joseph McCrohan, Manager of Kerry Social Farming; Eamon Horgan, Chair of the Kerry Social
Farming working group; and Mary Keane, HSE Disability Client Services Manager for Kerry.

After 13 years, Brigitta Looney walked her son Ryan out of St Francis Special School for the final time, leaving behind a remarkable legacy that will continue to benefit generations of children.
From one little boy to a €250,000 legacy
There are some goodbyes you can prepare yourself for, and then there are the ones that hit you when you least expect them. For Brigitta Looney, walking out of St Francis Special School in Beaufort alongside her son Ryan for the final time was always going to be one of them. In 2014, Brigitta walked through those doors with her little boy. Last month, 13 years later, she walked out with a young man and a €250,000 legacy behind her. “Emotional is an understatement,” she admits. “I thought I’d be stronger because I’m so involved with St Francis, but emotions hit you like a ton of bricks. There’s the fear of the unknown, what lies ahead of us, and the worry 'will he get on OK in the bigger world'?” Those same fears were present on Ryan’s first day. Brigitta remembers bringing her little boy into St Francis wondering whether he would settle, whether he would be OK and whether he would thrive. “Every emotion possible goes through your head when you’re a mother of a child with special needs. Your dream is for them to be accepted and to get on in this world.” For Ryan’s mum, the journey began long before that first day at school. Ryan was diagnosed with autism at three and a half, and Brigitta remembers the heartbreak of sitting with the multidisciplinary team and hearing her firstborn’s diagnosis. “I feel for every parent who sits in that room hearing their child being labelled. It’s heartbreaking. But your cards are dealt, and you learn so much. Autism opened my eyes to a whole new world. I grew with my son and learned his needs, his strengths and his weaknesses.” That journey also gave Brigitta a purpose. She knew there was no cure for autism, but she kept asking herself what she could do to help her son. Communication was one of Ryan’s biggest challenges, and she became increasingly frustrated by the lack of speech and language services available. At the time, Ryan was receiving just a six-
“I said to myself, ‘My dream before I leave St Francis is that I want all of the school to benefit.’ And the dream became a reality.” Now that Ryan has left the school, Brigitta has also stepped down as chairperson of the Speech and Language Therapy project. There have been emotional farewells, including a special send-off from Dominika and David of Kerry Speech and Language Clinic, with whom she has worked closely over the years. But Brigitta leaves knowing she has helped create something that will continue long after she and Ryan have moved on. “If I can say I did anything in life, I can proudly say this is one of my best.” And what about Ryan? For all the fundraising, the meetings, the golf classics, the raffles and the €250,000 raised, Brigitta’s greatest achievement is standing beside her son as he takes his next step in life. “He’s my gentle giant,” she says. “He might be non-verbal, but love needs no words, and he shows that every day.” Brigitta had hoped that the speech and language service might help Ryan find his words, but her 13-year journey has taught her something profound. “You don’t need words to communicate. Comprehension is all there.” And so, after 13 years, mother and son begin their next chapter. All the while leaving behind something that will continue to change the lives of other children. “I’m so proud we’ve come this far,” Brigitta says. “Onwards and upwards to our next chapter.” Life rarely turns out exactly as we imagine it, and sometimes the paths we never expected to take become the ones that shape us most. Perhaps the greatest measure of a life well lived is not what we achieve for ourselves, but what we leave behind for others. And sure, if we can have a few laughs, a lot of love, and not take ourselves too seriously along the way, then we’re probably doing okay.
week block of speech and language therapy. “It just wasn’t beneficial, especially when communication was such a big barrier. So I thought, why not bring a private speech and language service into the school every week and work with the children and staff continuously? Children thrive with continuous routine, so it was a no-brainer.” Brigitta brought her idea to then principal Liam Twomey and, together with Dominika Lieska of Kerry Speech and Language Clinic, the Speech and Language Therapy project began as a pilot scheme. Initially, just five children benefited. Today, thanks to more than a decade of fundraising, every child at St Francis Special School benefits from the service. And the amount raised to make that possible is extraordinary. Approximately €250,000 over the past ten years. “It makes me so proud. It’s a huge figure, and it wouldn’t have been accomplished without the parents and communities far and wide who donated throughout the years.” The generosity came from across Kerry and beyond. Parents and friends organised their own fundraisers, while events such as the Ring of Kerry cycle and support from St John of God also helped keep the
project going. For Brigitta, one of the highlights was the annual Autism Golf Classic at Beaufort Golf Club. One particular year, however, the golfers had to contend with more than just a challenging course. Storm Hannah arrived. “We started with a calm morning, but in the afternoon we had to get into the golf buggy and get our golfers back to safety,” she laughs. Even the storm couldn’t stop the fundraising. “With the electricity gone, one of the crew drove their car up to the patio door so we would have some light, and we did the monster live raffle on Facebook. Afterwards, our musicians started playing. We had the most enjoyable golf classic. Laughter and chats in the dark. Hannah didn’t postpone us!” There was never any regret about what she had taken on. “It gave me purpose. I felt I needed to do something to help the children. I always feared running out of funding, and the service would stop. Thankfully, it didn’t.” And as the fundraising grew, so did Brigitta’s ambition. Around four years ago, she set herself one final goal before leaving St Francis.

Sarah Leahy selected for European Track and Field Championships The elite championships will take place in Birmingham from August 13 to August 16, featuring many of the world's top athletes. This marks the third time Leahy has qualified for a major international championship, having previously competed at the World Athletics Championships in Eugene, Oregon, and the World Relay Championships in Botswana. Leahy has enjoyed a standout summer,
competing on the Diamond League and Grand Prix circuits. The former national indoor 60m champion and current national record holder over indoor 50m and 100m was also part of the women’s 4x100m relay team that set a new national record in front of 70,000 spectators at the London Diamond League. Leahy will line up in the 4x100m relay alongside Ciara Neville, Lauren Roy,
Killarney Valley AC enjoyed a successful outing at the televised National Track and Field Championships at Morton Sta-
dium in Santry, with seven club athletes qualifying to compete. High placings and personal bests were recorded across the board by Sarah Leahy, Jack O'Leary, Keelie O'Connor, Anna O'Shea, Conor Kissane, Jordan Lee, and Jason O'Reilly. The club secured two medals at the event, led by Jordan Lee, who claimed gold in the para elite Shot Putt. Jason O'Reilly captured the silver medal in the 400m hurdles with a personal best time of 53.75 seconds. This marks O'Reilly's second consecutive year on the national podium, improving on his third-place finish in 2025. The event was won by Fintan Dewhirst of Tir Chonaill AC in 51.76 seconds, while Adam Courtney of Ballymena and Antrim AC completed the podium in third place.

Star Killarney Valley AC international athlete Sarah Leahy has been selected to represent Ireland at the European Track and Field Championships 2026.
John O’Donoghue begins 3,000km coastal cycle around Ireland Killarney man John O’Donoghue set off yesterday on a demanding 3,166km cycle around the entire coast of Ireland to raise vital funds for St. Francis Special School. John aims to complete the extensive coastal journey over 17 days of continuous cycling, with a target finish date of August 15. The challenge will see him take on changing weather conditions and long hours in the saddle every day as he navigates the perimeter of the country. All proceeds raised from the fundraiser will go directly to St. Francis Special School to support their ongoing work with children and young people with additional needs. The school provides a caring, inclusive learning environment featuring specialized teaching, therapies, and tailored supports designed to help pupils reach their full potential.
Members of the public can make a donation online to support the cause, and followers can track John’s daily progress along the route via his Instagram page, @ kerryjohncycles.

Monument honouring revolutionary women A proposal that first originated in the Killarney Municipal District has culminated in the unveiling of Ireland’s first monument dedicated to the women of the 1912–1923 revolutionary period.
Angland family celebrate Munster Fleadh triumph
The project was brought forward by Killarney councillor Marie Moloney and backed by fellow Killarney representative Maura Healy-Rae. The initiative gained momentum and full support in the main Kerry County Council chamber from all elected female councillors – adding Norma Moriarty, Aoife Thornton and Deirdre Ferris - leading to the commissioning of the historic memorial. Titled Spiorad Bán Chiarraí or Spirit of the Kerry Women, the 2.5-metre bronze sculpture was officially unveiled in Tralee Town Park. Created by Dublin-based sculptor Elizabeth O’Kane, the artwork depicts a woman in period uniform marching forward while raising the Irish flag. To maintain historical accuracy,
O’Kane referenced original uniforms from Cumann na mBan and Cumann na Saoirse. "The sculpture was a year and a half in the making, from sculpting the largerthan-life-size clay figure in my studio, to the many months of highly skilled bronze casting carried out in a Dublin foundry," said Ms O’Kane. "From start to finish, it has been a labour of love - artists often claim to suffer for their work, but I have the X-ray to prove it! A fractured wrist in the middle of the project was extremely untimely, but I am immensely proud of the final result. It has been a privilege to commemorate the women of this period with a sculpture that celebrates their courage, sacrifice, and enduring legacy." The project was funded through the Department of Housing and Local Government under the Percent for Arts Scheme. The memorial stands as a permanent tribute to the vital social, political, and military roles Kerry women played in shaping modern Ireland.
Glenflesk CCE and the local traditional music community are celebrating a major haul of silverware following the Angland family’s outstanding performances at the Munster Fleadh Cheoil in Lismore, County Waterford. Siblings Colleen, Olivia, Seán, and Grace Angland earned a impressive collection of provincial titles, podium finishes, and All-Ireland qualification spots across multiple music, singing, and dancing disciplines. Seán Angland delivered a stellar run in the 12-15 category, taking first place in the Melodeon alongside second-place finishes in Piano, Accompaniment, and Mouth Organ. He also secured second place in both the Duet and Trio competitions alongside his sister Olivia and Aoife Hobbert of Lixnaw CCE. Olivia Angland added to the family success with third-place finishes in both the 12-15 Fiddle and Lilting competitions. She also excelled on the dance floor, winning
first place in the 12-15 Mixed Set Dance and third in the Ladies Set Dance with Killarney CCE. In the 15-18 age group, Colleen Angland secured double silver with second-place finishes in both the Flute Slow Airs and Whistle Slow Airs. Colleen, Olivia, and Seán also joined forces as members of the Cork-based Baile Átha an Spidéil Grúpaí Ceoil (15-18) to take third place in a competitive field. Meanwhile, Grace Angland earned second place with the An Ríocht Senior Grúpaí Ceoil. The achievement sees Grace return to the All-Ireland stage in Belfast, following her national title win in Senior Piano at Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann last year.

Local musicians and dancers head for Belfast All-Ireland Fleadh Musicians, singers, and dancers from both the Killarney and Kilcummin branches of Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann are heading to Belfast this weekend for Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann following major success at the Munster Fleadh in Lismore, County Waterford.
The All-Ireland competition runs from August 2 to August 9, with competitors from across the two local parishes travelling north to compete on the national stage. Kilcummin CCÉ enjoyed an outstanding provincial tournament across music, language, and dancing. Eoin Foley claimed a Munster title in the 15 to 18 Button Accordion, while Micheál Healy took gold in the Over 18 Melodeon alongside a third-place finish in the button accordion. Brynn McCarthy secured her spot in Belfast after qualifying in Comhrá Gaeilge for 9 to 11 age group, while also picking up third place in Under 12 English Singing. Dancers from the Moriarty School of Dancing dominated the set dancing
competitions in Lismore, winning five Munster titles across Under 12 Ladies, Under 12 Mixed, Under 18 Ladies, Over 18 Mixed, and Over 35 Ladies. These five sets now join four previously qualified Kilcummin sets, the Over 18 Mixed, Ladies, and Half sets, along with the Over 35 Mixed, bringing a total of nine set dancing teams from the parish to the Belfast finals under trainers Adrian, John, and Mary Moriarty. Killarney CCÉ members also celebrated a highly successful provincial championship, securing a haul of Munster titles and top-three qualification spots across various music, singing, dancing, and Irish language categories.

Café du Parc, Pig's Lane, and The Kenmare Rooms at the Killarney Avenue Hotel were all named among the nation's top hospitality spots after the shortlist was chosen from over 1,000 entries nationwide. Café du Parc was shortlisted for both Hotel Bar of the Year and Hotel Cocktail Bar of the Year.

Killarney Golf Club hosts busy week of competitions Killarney Golf and Fishing Club held a series of competitions over the past week across its various divisions. Members took part in several scheduled events, including the Mark Heinemann Professional Prize, the Castlerosse Park Resort Mixed Foursomes, and the Junior Captain's Prize. Lady members also
played in the Laurels Pub & Restaurant VPAR on the Killeen Course, as well as a competition sponsored by Kerry Coaches. Wildfires rage in Europe Fires are rippling across Spain, Greece and France this week as temperatures continue to soar during a European heatwave. The wildfires are being described as the worst in living memory, as they soar through the forest in Spain and France. In Spain, the fires are blazing near the capital city of Madrid. In the last couple of days, Spain has confirmed their fires
are contained with the prime minister stating: “light at the end of the tunnel”, however France are not so lucky as they continue to grapple with the flames. In France, the French wildfire is located near Bordeaux, with fears it might reach the very popular city, a favourite among tourists. Over 200,000 people evacuated their homes in face of the fires, and 240 homes were reportedly destroyed.
On Wednesday night, there was optimism in the region as the fire remained stable in the Gironde region. There are also fires in Greece, with a report on Wednesday night stating that thousands of people were evacuated on the Greek island of Crete, killing two firefighters. There is a concern that this trend could continue due to the changing effects of climate change.
Fan favourites win Love Island 2026 After eight weeks of romance, drama and unexpected twists, Love Island 2026 has officially come to an end, with Lorenzo and Julia crowned this year's winners. The couple secured almost half of the public vote, beating runners-up Jasmine and Kavan, while Angelista and Simba finished in third place. Lorenzo entered the villa as one of the original Islanders and initially coupled up with Jasmine. However, the pair failed to find a romantic connection, and throughout the series he found himself at the centre of several love triangles. Before Casa Amor, Lorenzo developed feelings for Yasmin, who ended her relationship with Aidan to pursue a connection with him. However, everything changed when the Casa Amor twist introduced Julia to the villa. The chemistry between Lorenzo and Julia was immediate, and he chose to bring her back to the main villa, where their relationship quickly blossomed. Her no-nonsense attitude and confidence won over viewers, making her a quick fan favourite. Their genuine connection, loyalty and chemistry resonated with the public, making them deserving winners of Love Island 2026.
Warning to drivers for the bank holiday weekend Motorists are being reminded to never drive with any alcohol in their system, even the next morning. Drinkaware has launched a campaign to encourage drivers to plan ahead. 87% of adults now agree that any amount of alcohol impairs their ability to drive, revealing a slight decline in awareness from previous years. Only 77% believe that driving the morning after a night of drinking is just as dangerous as drink-driving itself, highlighting a persistent knowledge gap that can carry serious consequences on our roads. Many people still underestimate the risk of driving the day after a night out. It’s
important to remember that only time removes alcohol from your system. On average, it takes at least one hour to process a standard drink. A standard drink is roughly equivalent to: A small glass of wine (100ml at 12.5%), a half pint of lager (4.5%), or a pub measure of spirits (40%). Because an average pint of beer is equal to two standard drinks, if someone drinks three pints of beer, it will take their body a minimum of six hours to fully process that alcohol. Additionally, blood alcohol levels can continue to rise for hours even after someone has stopped drinking their drink of choice. Plan ahead and stay safe this bank holiday weekend.

KCC’s filmmaker in residence named Jesse Gilbert is returning as Kerry Filmmaker in residence. The role is an integral part of the creative arts programme in Kerry County Council.
Calls for catering service to return to Kerry trains There has been calls on the Government, Iarnród Eireann and the National Transport Authority to restore catering services on the Tralee to Dublin rail route. Sinn Féin TD for Kerry, Pa Daly queried the national rail service on the issue. The Sinn Féin spokesperson for Transport revealed that the latest update from Iarnród Éireann on the restoration of catering services is simply not good enough. As advised at the Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport on June 10, the company now hopes to establish a six-month pilot programme on selected route or routes from Q3, in partnership with a catering provider, to test the market, gather customer feedback and assess demand. Deputy Daly said: “Passengers on the Tralee to
Dublin line have gone without catering services for years. It was removed during Covid as a temporary measure. It was never intended to become a permanent downgrade in service. Yet six years later, Kerry passengers are still being denied a basic amenity that any traveller would reasonably expect on a journey of over four hours.” He described the need for a pilot as “absurd” saying “nobody needs a market survey”. He demanded that Iarnród Éireann, the National Transport Authority and the Government immediately commit to restoring catering services on the Tralee to Dublin route and provide a clear timeline for delivery. He said that anything less will be viewed by passengers as yet another broken promise in a saga that has dragged on for far too long.”
Rossbeigh swim notice lifted Kerry County Council has lifted the prohibition on swimming at Rossbeigh Beach. Following receipt of new results of samples carried out by the Marine Institute, the cause of surface water discolouration at Rossbeigh beach has been identified and confirmed as an algal bloom which is not harmful to humans. This organism, which has now largely dissipated, is not uncommon in Irish coastal waters at this time of the year. On the
advice of the Marine Institute and in consultation with HSE, Kerry County Council is pleased to advise that the prohibition on swimming at Rossbeigh beach is lifted with immediate effect. Lifeguards are on duty and both the Blue Flag and lifeguard patrol flags have again been raised. Kerry County Council previously extended the notice at the start of this week; however it was lifted on Wednesday evening. It is good news for beach-goers as there is set to be sunshine for some of the weekend.
Kate Kennelly, Arts Officer and Creative Ireland Coordinator at KCC said that demand from young people to explore creativity through film is large and that it is inspiring to see the enthusiasm of those engaging with his residency. Jesse will continue his programme of delivering workshops for schools, community groups and youth film clubs. Highlights from last year's residency include the Poetry - Films initiative, during which 5 community groups created films from poems they had developed with writer-in-residence Emer Fallon. These films screened at a dedicated Culture Night event at Siamsa Tíre. This year Jesse is looking to focus on documentary filmmaking. He will be working with several Women's groups countywide to produce a series of documentary films centred on the importance of community. Providing a filmmaking outlet for the youth of Kerry has always been a key element to Jesse's work, and he is available for school workshops with transition year groups. He will also continue facilitat-
ing the Killarney-based filmmaking club SONAR, which has recently acquired its first dedicated film camera (thanks to the kind support of the Kerry ETB). SONAR's films have won awards at national youth film competitions and offer great opportunities for young people looking to pursue filmmaking. New RTE journalist covering local news in Cork and Kerry Barry Gallagher will take up the role of covering news from Cork, Kerry and the wider Southern region for RTE News. Working alongside RTÉ News' Southern Editor Paschal Sheehy, Barry will be reporting for RTÉ News' online, social, television and radio news programmes. RTÉ's Jennie O'Sullivan recently retired in May, following a career of over 25 years reporting for RTÉ News from the region. Barry joined RTÉ News in 2023, originally as a presenter of news2day for two years. He has gone on to work
as a multi-media journalist reporting across television, radio and online news including RTÉ’s Six One News, Nine O’Clock News, and most recently with RTÉ's Morning Ireland team. He has reported on Storm Chandra and the Enniscorthy Floods, the 2024 Olympic Games, Electric Picnic, the 2024 and 2025 All Ireland Hurling Finals, and Jessie Buckley’s historic Oscar success. Originally from Gartan in Donegal, he moved to Dublin for his undergraduate degree in journalism at DCU in 2019. And after graduating in May 2022, Barry began working as a reporter with national media outlet The Irish Sun, cementing his love for all things news. There he worked on a variety of different stories ranging from breaking news and sport to investigative features, covering events across the country and beyond. Barry grew up on a farm in rural Ireland, understanding the important role of regional news and reporting on issues affecting people across their region. KDMC brings autotest event back to Kerry Killarney & District Motor Club (KDMC) will host its annual autotest event at a new location in Farranfore on Sunday, August 16. Moving back to Kerry soil after being held in Millstreet in recent years, this year’s competition takes place at the 4 Park Business Centre in Farranfore. The venue provides a larger layout for precision driving tests along with on-site facilities. The event will form Round 6 of the Mot-
orsport Ireland National Autotest Championship and Round 8 of the Partsworld Munster Autotest Championship. Open to drivers of all experience levels, the event includes dedicated categories and reduced entry fees for beginners, novices, and junior drivers restricted to 1000cc saloons. Ted's Opel Vauxhall Run Celebrates 19 years One of Ireland’s largest gatherings of Opel and Vauxhall enthusiasts takes place next weekend as Ted’s Opel Vauxhall Run returns for its 19th edition on Saturday, August 8. Raising vital funds for Dogs for the Disabled, the popular event moves to a new headquarters at Coolcower House
in Macroom, County Cork. She bobbed and weaved through the throng, hardly taking her eyes off of the back of his ginger head as she tried to catch up to him. She caught up with Jack where he was talking to Seamus from the Laurels. “But do you know where they got the jerky?” “I s’pose I could tell ya, but my beer’s ran dry, and my throat is mighty sore ..” Jack shook his head with a huff and headed towards the bar. “Felicity, make sure he doesn’t disappear!” he shouted over his shoulder as he went. Felicity turned to Seamus. She had seen him a few times since they first met. She had learnt that his favourite place to be was outside a pub with a cold pint in hand and the sun on his face. “What’s Jack after?” She asked. “Well now, he caught sight of a fella with jerky, and now he’s pesterin’ me because he thinks I know who’s sellin’ it.” Felicity raised an eyebrow. “And do you?” He chuckled. “Well, that’d be tellin’.” Just then Jack reappeared with a fresh beer. “I’m a sucker for dehydrated snacks.” He said, defending himself although Felicity said nothing. She thought it was odd, but to each their own.
THE VENDOR
As soon as Jack placed the pint in Seamus’ hand, the man crooked a finger in the direction of a young man in a black trench coat. His coat was extremely out of place amongst the tank tops and short sleeve-wearing festival-goers. Jack didn’t even pause before he approached the man, holding out a hand to shake. “Hiya, my name’s Jack. Are you the guy that’s selling jerky?” The man looked at Jack’s outstretched hand with a frown before looking him up and down. “That depends. Who’s asking?” “.. my name’s .. Jack .. Look man, everywhere here sells really sweet treats, but I like my savoury snacks. Are you selling jerky, or is there someone else I should talk to?” The man opened up his jacket akin to a cartoon sleazy watch salesman to reveal inner pockets stuffed with jerky. He snatched a packet out and handed it to Jack. Felicity thought he was being rather eccentric for what was just some fairground food. Just as Jack was about to hand over his money, a security guard approached them. “Can I see your vendor permit sir?” The man looked like he was going to run, but another security guard appeared out of nowhere. The man stuttered something about how his brother was meant to bring their permit, but security were having none of it. Felicity watched them take the illicit jerky vendor off of the premises, and turned to see Jack was already gone. She scanned the crowds and saw his head bounding back over to Auntie Sheila. Maybe it wasn’t that Killarney was trouble, but
just her friends that often got caught up in mischief. She followed after him with a smile. A few pints and a burger later, Felicity managed to get Auntie Sheila on the fairground rides. The ride operator was lovely. He could tell Auntie Sheila was frightened out of her skin, so he didn’t swing too high. Felicity was trying to talk to Auntie Sheila to distract her, but Jack ended up taking over, babbling away mindlessly about anything and everything as they swung to and fro, losing their stomachs at the top of every arc. In comparison, cajoling Auntie Sheila onto the Ferris wheel was a piece of cake. Jack waited at the bottom whilst Felicity and her aunt climbed onto the wheel. They enjoyed the stillness of Killarney from above, lit by street lights.
THE CONCERT
As ten o’clock approached, the trio made their way into the Gleneagle Arena. They had chosen to go to Bikefest on this night in particular to see Qween, a tribute band that made fairly regular appearances in the Bikefest line up. It was a large part of the reason Auntie Sheila wanted to go, although she loved a concert or gig no matter who was performing. They walked in just as the opening band were starting. They got drinks and found a comfortable place to stand near a wall. They were happily nodding along to the openers when Felicity caught sight of some sort of ruckus amongst the gaggle of people gathered near the sound booth. She watched as a few burly security guards gave chase through the masses of people. When the caught the instigator, she was surprised to see it was the jerky vendor. Felicity tugged Auntie Sheila along with her towards the exit. As they emerged from the dark arena, they saw the edge of a Garda van waiting outside the doors of the venue. The security guards were handing the vendor off to them. The vendor turned and glared at Felicity as the van doors closed. If eyes could burn, she would have been ash on the wind. “I wonder what he’s at,” Auntie Sheila pondered. “I don’t know,” Felicity replied as she dragged her aunt towards the bathrooms. They spent the rest of their night enjoying the music. It was an incredible experience, between the thumping music and the crowds all swaying to familiar songs. There was laughter, tears and pure undiluted joy interspersed throughout the crowd. They got home at an ungodly hour. It was a boring ordeal, of just keeping possession, As teams hand-passed incessantly, in ritual processions. He rescued the game that we all love, from oblivion, For it’s now a sporting spectacle, of skill and scoring fun. He introduced a rainbow ark, for guys to shoot long range, Which produced two pointers, and novel orange flag waves. Now if perchance long shots fall short, there is goalmouth action, Which entertains the punters, and gives forwards satisfaction. Only time will truly tell, of how Jim Gavin left his mark, And he deserves a statue built, somewhere in Croke Park!

Deferring your State Pension (Contributory) Since January 2024, a number of changes have been introduced in relation to claiming your State Pension (Contributory). One of these changes is that you can defer claiming your pension. Q. What is deferring the State Pension (Contributory)? A. The State Pension (Contributory) is paid to people from the age of 66 who have enough (PRSI) contributions. Since January 2024, you can choose to start claiming your State Pension (Contributory) anytime between the ages of 66 and 70. Choosing a later start date is called deferring your pension. You can defer your start date up until you turn 70. Q. Why would I defer the start date for my State Pension (Contributory)? A. During deferral, you can continue to work and make PRSI contributions to increase your personal rate of payment or meet the qualifying condition of 520 (10 years) contributions for State Pension (Contributory). This means that deferring your State Pension (Contributory) can help you to: • Qualify for State Pension (Contributory) if you didn't qualify at age 66 • Get a higher rate of State Pension (Contributory) than what you would have got at age 66 It is important to know how many PRSI contributions you have before you choose the start date for your pension.
The Department of Social Protection has a record of your contributions. You can ask for a copy of your Contribution Statement using MyWelfare. This statement includes all your PRSI contributions, including paid PRSI contributions and Long-Term Carers Contributions. You need a verified MyGovID account to use this service. Alternatively, you can telephone the PRSI records section at 0818 690690 and ask them to post you a copy of your record. If you bring your record into your local Citizens Information Centre, they will help you to interpret it. Q. Who can defer their State Pension (Contributory)? A. If you were born on or after 1958, you can choose to claim the State Pension (Contributory) anytime between the ages of 66 and 70. Once you start claiming your State Pension (Contributory), you can no longer choose to defer your pension claim, even if you keep working. This is because you don’t pay PRSI once you start getting your pension. Q. What are the current rates of deferred State Pension (Contributory)? A. If you choose to start claiming your pension between age 67 and 70, you may be entitled to a higher rate of State Pension (Contributory). Age when you start to claim Maximum rate
Your pension rate depends on the age you are when you start getting your pension. If you don’t qualify for the maximum rate, you may get a reduced rate. The table below includes maximum rates based on 2025 rates of State Pension (Contributory) There will be proportionate rates for qualified adults and children. Q. How many PRSI contributions can I make during deferral? During deferral, you can continue to make PRSI contributions to increase your personal rate of payment or meet the qualifying condition of 520 (10 years) contributions for State Pension (Contributory). However, you will not be able to increase your contributions past the current maximum of 2080 (40 years). It is important to know how many contributions you have before you are going to drawdown your pension. Q. Can I get a social welfare payment during the deferral period? If you defer claiming your State Pension (Contributory) up to the age of 70, and you meet the other qualifying conditions for the payment below, you can get: • Illness Benefit
• Partial Capacity Benefit (only if you came to PCB from Illness Benefit) • Jobseeker’s Benefit • Jobseeker's Benefit (Self-Employed) • Back to Work Family Dividend If you are already getting one of these payments when you defer your pension, you can continue getting it for as long as you’re entitled to it. Q. How do I apply? The Department of Social Protection has published a new application form for the State Pension (Contributory) (SPC1). The form asks for the date you want to start getting your pension. This can be any date between your 66th and 70th birthdays. You should apply for the State Pension (Contributory) at least 3 months, and no more than 6 months, before the date you want your pension to start. CROKE PARK Kerry’s back-to-back All-Ireland dream turned to a nightmare in Croke Park on Sunday last as long-suffering Mayo finally got their hands on Sam Maguire after an agonising 75-year wait. The defending champions were considered strong favourites to win consecutive All-Irelands for the first time since 20062007 but they were met on the day by an exuberant challenger who hit them with everything they had. For a Kerry panel that battled against a significant injury crisis all season, this final obstacle was simply too high to scale. The Kingdom started brightly and a trademark goal by David Clifford helped them generate an early seven-point lead. Mayo seized the initiative thereafter, however, as two-pointers by Jack Carney and Ryan O’Donoghue got the team – and their boisterous fans – right back into the game. Andy Moran’s men outscored Kerry by nine points to three in the second quarter and they went in just one point behind (1-8 to 0-10). Kerry’s travelling supporters were hoping their side could find another gear in the second period but on the contrary it was Mayo who slipped into overdrive. Teenagers Darragh Beirne and Kobe McDonald combined for 1-2 in the first five minutes of the half, Beirne’s goal coming at the end of a blistering counterattack that typified Mayo’s energetic performance. The terrific Paudie Clifford did his best to drag his team back into contention and he led a charge that saw Kerry go on a 5-1 run between minutes 42 and 54. That brought it back to a one-point game,

but the Westerners responded in kind. Scores by McDonald (two), Jordan Flynn and Ryan O’Donoghue (two-pointer) stretched the lead back out to five points. With just eight minutes on the clock, Kerry’s title was under serious threat. To their credit they did all they could to turn the tide. A remarkable right-footed two-pointer by David Clifford in the 65th minute followed by a single by Paudie in the 67th meant a two-pointer was needed to level the game. David tried first but his attempt went just wide to the right. Seánie O’Shea also had a go in the final seconds but it fell short. As exhausted Kerry bodies strived hopelessly to fend off the now inevitable defeat, Mayo streamed forward and McDonald found Tommy Conroy in space. The substitute fisted over the final score of an absorbing contest. Kerry had no time to get the ball back into a goalscoring situation and the hooter sounded, signalling the end of Mayo’s curse and with it the GAA’s longest running hard luck story.

Of all our bad days in Dublin, this was the best | By Adam Moynihan
Losing an All-Ireland is bad. Losing when you’re the favourites is worse. But losing to a county who have lost 11 finals in a row and have waited 75 years for their one day in the sun? That’s better than most losses, actually. In fact, I’d classify last Sunday as the best bad day I’ve ever had as Kerry man in Dublin. When Mayo captain Jack Coyne lifted the Sam Maguire Cup, many of the Kerry supporters us around up in the Hogan Stand press box were still there watching. Applauding. Soaking it in. If it was the Dublin or Tyrone or Armagh captain, you better believe they would have long since scarpered. I’ve even seen people in green and gold head for the exits before Kerry trophy lifts. So to see them stick around and pay their respects to Mayo… It just goes to show that this moment was special. It transcended county rivalry. As heartbreaking as it was for Kerry, how could anyone deny Mayo this? It wasn’t just sentimentality that won everyone over. In pure football terms, the newly crowned champions were phenomenal. Their energy levels, their intensity, their relentless high press, their
tackling, their high-octane attacks… It was real heavy metal stuff. The job Andy Moran has done in his first year is scarcely believable. From also rans to first past the post in the blink of an eye. With Kobe winning in his first and potentially only year? As one Mayo friend repeatedly remarked on Sunday night, “it’s biblical”. Of course, looking at things with our Kerry hat on, we will always wonder what went wrong. As good as Mayo were, Jack O’Connor’s men were not at their best, which is partially down to Mayo – but there were other factors at play as well. I did feel as though a number of key players looked off it physically, which is very understandable given the difficult injuries many of them have been hit with this season. Gavin White, Joe O’Connor, Séanie O’Shea and Paudie Clifford – arguably four of Kerry’s five most important players – have been forced to sit out parts of this campaign. It’s not that they played badly. Paudie was actually immense. But could you look at that game on Sunday and say they were all operating at 100%, or even close to it? I don’t think so. Diarmuid O’Connor was forced out the week before the final. Tony Brosnan likewise. Paul Geaney was not able to feature.
Brian Ó Beaglaoich, an All-Star, in 2025, came on with 11 minutes to go. Tom O’Sullivan was drafted in as a surprise starter but was taken off at half-time. Shane Ryan was absent all year. With all of these guys carrying injuries, it took a huge effort to even get to the final. Winning it against such a vibrant and fit Mayo team would have been a brilliant achievement. But it wasn’t to be. There will be some criticism aimed at the players, the manager and the coaches. There always is after a tough defeat like this. One thing I couldn’t understand personally was how isolated Kerry’s corner backs were in possession. Mayo were always going to press high and very aggressively, and targeting the corner backs was a no-brainer. Kerry must have known this, yet Paul Murphy in particular got pinned in time and time again. It’s easy to criticise the individual who gets caught by the press but where were his options? Who was breaking free of their marker out the field to make themselves available for a pass? I thought he was hung out to dry. Kerry have also been criticised over their slow build-up play. I actually think they were keen to take the sting out of the
game at times, both as a means of getting their breath back and to try and kill Mayo’s momentum. This tactic worked better in the quarters and semis against teams who didn’t press so aggressively but even when Kerry got into their set attacking formation inside Mayo’s 65, it wasn’t comfortable possession. They still had to bust a gut to make angles and keep the ball out of contact, and with the Mayo defenders marking so aggressively, it was harder to create opportunities. It came down to 1v1 duels and who could beat their man for pace. This was always going to be the case, which is why I felt it would be a huge game for Kerry’s quickest and most athletic players, but unfortunately the power didn’t seem to be in the legs to the same extent it was 12 months prior. The club calendar debate is absolutely going to rear its head again this autumn/ winter but that’s a discussion for another day. For now it’s congratulations to Mayo and commiserations to Kerry. Our boys will be disappointed this week and for some time to come, but I have no doubt they’ll be back next year challenging for the biggest prize.

Of course, I was hoping for another Kerry win, but could anyone begrudge Mayo arriving at the promised land? All the Fs that afflicted Mayo, being frustrated, flustered, fazed, furious, fidgety, fractious, fretful, floundering and flummoxed, evaporated as they found the cure for ‘The Curse’ of 1951 imposed by the parish priest in Foxford. Kerry were deprived of their 40th All-Ireland, and Mayo claimed their fourth after 11 defeats since 1951. defeating Kerry in the process. It was a very popular win and fair dues to the large crowd of Kerry supporters who stayed on for the presentation as a mark of admiration and respect. The outcome was in the melting pot right to the end as Mayo left Kerry in the game, shooting some terrible wides. They should have gone eight points clear after Darragh Beirne’s goal. He impressed me so much with that beautiful shimmy which wrong-footed Kerry so often. He’s a fine player, while Kobe gets the headlines ahead of his brother Jordan, who
also had a great game on Sunday last. In an important game at the Fitzgerald Stadium in 2021 I first saw Ryan O’Donoghue live in action and was impressed by the corner forward who scored five points that day. O’Donoghue has come on a ton since then, and Mayo’s win may get him Player of the Year. A good choice no doubt, but I still believe that David Clifford should get the award. He had a marvellous year and, aided by the big brother, oops, smaller but older, Paudie, the brilliant conductor of the Kerry orchestra. But he found too many of his teammates out
of tune on Sunday. Quite simply, Kerry would have gone out of the race for Sam three games back only for the Clifford magic. The brothers were magnificent again in Croker, and with the Kerry boat shipping water, particularly in the second quarter, they sent out the lifebuoys, but ultimately it did not rescue the Kingdom. Shane Murphy also continued his brilliant form throughout the championship. I expect the Clifford brothers and goalkeeper Murphy to be the only Kerry All-Stars in 2026. Well in contention coming into the

31.07.2026 final were Jason Foley and Mark O’Shea, but two disappointing performances killed off Dylan Geaney's chances. When you win, the players get the credit: when you lose, the guillotine falls mercilessly on the manager. Ask Andy Moran after the 10-point whipping by Roscommon in the Connacht final. Or McGeeney, McGuinness, Fitzmaurice and more. Blaming Jack completely is too easy a cop out for the disappointed Kerry folk. Of course, Jack and his selectors made wrong calls, but they also got most of it right. In a year where injuries multiplied and the standout players of 2025 such as Seánie O’Shea, Gavin White, Joe O’Connor and Brian Ó Beaglaoich were out injured for much of the year. They were short on match time. Add in Paul Geaney, Tom O’Sullivan, and the unfortunate duo of Diarmuid O’Connor and Tony Brosnan, who suffered any player’s nightmare, pulling a hamstring in training and excluded from the match-day 26. So, was the much-vaunted Kerry bench as strong as it was made out to be? When Mayo adopted the high press – a euphemism for the notorious swarming of yesteryear under the old rules – Kerry’s charge for back-to-back All-Irelands failed. That honour that has also eluded Jack O’Connor as manager, despite his numerous single successes. How did Mayo switch to such intensive tackling so that far too often the Kerry
player in possession was so bottled up that he was unable to pass to a Kerry colleague? Ironically, it was an adopted Kerryman who masterminded the winning strategy. The much-travelled Tyrone, Derry, Kerry and now Mayo strategist Paddy Tally steeled Mayo into this high-press constituted tackle that Kerry were turned over so often as they were coming out with the ball, which was spilt too often. I believe that was a significant factor in Mayo’s win. Inexplicable, also were the uncharacteristic wides by the usual Kerry sharpshooters. They shot under duress. In this year’s league game in Tralee, Mayo kicked 14 wides to Kerry’s 1. Kerry won the game 2-29 to 0-19. QED. Kerry management is slow to bring in subs for players who are not performing well in any particular game. They waited until half-time to bring on Keith Evans for Tom O’Sullivan. Would it have been a better call to have started Evans? Other substitutions included Kennedy for Geaney (51), Ó Beaglaoich for White (59), Looney for Paul Murphy (61) and Burns for O’Brien (63). Evan Looney did come on as a temporary sub for Dylan Casey before half-time, but that was an imposed substitution. Compare that with Andy Moran's substitutions: Tommy Conroy for Towey (24), Ruane for Tuohy (53), Brickenden for McGreal (53), Loftus for O’Connor (58),
Durcan for Callinan (64) Who did most of the scoring? David Clifford scored 1-6 and Paudie 0-3, more than 50% of Kerry’s total score. My first thoughts at the final whistle were for the Mayo diaspora, especially great friends of decades ago in Chicago, at the McBride’s GAA Club. Predominantly Mayo immigrants in the construction business, they were disappointed so often but revered Kerry. I can only imagine their feelings that Sam was about to reside in Mayo. Were they singing ‘Moonlight in Mayo’ or the ‘Green and Red of Mayo’? Too many of the Kerry players underperformed by their high standards. Mayo tackled hard and often with such regularity that Kerry could never dictate play as we expect them to do so often. Crucial times in the game include the early stages when Kerry led 1-6 to 0-1. They should have added more and effectively killed any hope Mayo had. Equally surprising is the dominance of Mayo, especially after Beirne’s goal. Kerry were on the ropes; Mayo were so well on top at the three-quarter stage that one expected an eight-point win, but they frightened the lives out of their supporters by just sitting on a lead. Alarmingly, the Mayo lead was down to two points with three minutes to go. Was there to be a Séamus Darby winner in the dying minutes, or a two-pointer to level and
go to extra time? Mayo had scored four two-pointers; Kerry shot just one, and just one more late two-pointer would have brought Kerry level and into extra time. The better team held on; they deserved their victory. Enjoy. Legend had it that the infamous curse was put on the victorious 1951 Mayo team after going through Foxford. Mayo were never to win the Sam Maguire until all members of that team had passed away. No record of a funeral emerges from the church records. However, the myth persisted. The great Paddy Prendergast of Ballintubber from that team that won back-to-back All-Irelands was a garda who spent most of his life in Tralee. Paddy passed away at Tralee in September 2021 at the age of 96. With the death of Dr Mick Loftus, the final surviving member of the wider 1951 panel, in 2023, the last living links to Mayo’s most recent All-Ireland triumph were gone. The priest who starred in ‘51 was Fr Peter Quinn from the Columban order, and another priest, Fr Michael Caulfield, was a sub. Yet another great footballing hero, Fr Frank Fahey, who won a minor medal around that time, did trojan work in the restoration and promotion of Ballintubber Abbey. He died a few weeks ago. What a shame that none of them lived to experience the joy of Sunday last.

Kingdom set for Galway rematch in Croke Park Brendan Martin Cup after a 31-year gap. Some of those veterans retired, Kayleigh Cronin went to play pro football with the Adelaide Crows, and the two Tralee managers stepped down. With new management (headed by Mark Bourke) and several new players, Kerry have done so well. I was very impressed with them in Newbridge where they demolished Kildare. Emma Costello was the shining star in that game. Onto Tralee, where they easily disposed of Meath in the quarter-final, and then the crunch game versus Dublin, which they won so
easily. They took the game to Dublin, shot great early scores and were 2-4 to 0-1 ahead after eight minutes. Dublin did rally, but Kerry kicked on for a 2-16 to 1-9 victory. Star player and Laoch na hImeartha in that semi-final was Síofra O’Shea, the Kerry captain who scored 1-8. We carried an interview with her on these pages over the past two weeks, and what came through from this talented sports lady is her will to win and her versatility. Both sides played some excellent football throughout, with plenty of skill, determination and great scores on display. We are very happy with the continued improvement shown by our players and
the way they battled and worked for each other right to the final whistle. U12 GIRLS: U12 girls tr travelled to Abbeydorney yesterday evening in the next phase of County go games. 2 games of 8 a side were played in a good sporting atmosphere. The hosts played some great football in all games and really tested our girls to their credit the girls stood up to the challenge and 2 excellent games transpired. Spa GAA MINOR BOYS: Spa Minor Boys were crowned County League Division 5 Champions on Tuesday evening following a superb 4-10 to 2-13 victory over a strong Cordal side in an entertaining final. Spa's clinical finishing proved decisive, with three first-half goals helping them to a 3-4 to 0-8 interval lead, before they continued their impressive display in the second half to secure a well-deserved win. Daithí Stack was named Player of the Match for his outstanding performance, while captain JJ O'Donoghue proudly accepted the trophy from Denis McCrohan. The victory caps a remarkable season for this talented young Spa team, who have now completed a memorable treble, having already captured the East Kerry Division 3 Minor League title and the Minor County Championship Division E Shield. Congratulations to all the players and the management team on a fantastic achievement. ALL-IRELAND GLORY FOR CIARA: Huge congratulations to Spa's Ciara O'Sullivan and the Kerry Minor team on capturing the All-Ireland U18 B title following a thrilling 1-12 to 1-10 extra-time victory over Tyrone. Dr Crokes GAA COUNTY INTERMEDIATE HURLING CHAMPIONSHIP: Dr. Crokes 2-22 Rathmore 0-15. We maintained our strong championship form with a deserved thirteen-point victory over Rathmore in Rathbeg on a mild summer's evening. Built on clinical finishing and a disciplined defensive display, we were always in control despite a spirited challenge from the home side. We made a lively start with Brian O'Connor denied by an excellent save after a superb sideline delivery from Mark Heffernan, who kept the scoreboard ticking with frees, a '65 and a point from play. David Carroll then picked out Brian O'Connor, who showed excellent control and pace to burst through for the opening goal. Adam Byrne was unlucky to find the side netting after a brilliant solo run, while Mark Heffernan converted another free after Brian O'Connor was controversially denied what looked like a clear penalty opportunity. Scores from Brian O'Connor, Pa Sheehan and Adam Byrne helped us to a 1-11 to 0-08 halftime lead. Rathmore started the second half brightly, but Kevin Landers quickly responded with two excellent points before Tom Doyle and Brian O'Connor added further scores. The decisive moment arrived when David Carroll again supplied Brian O'Connor, who finished clinically for his second goal of the evening. Mark Heffernan continued to punish Rathmore from placed balls, while Kevin Landers, Brian O'Connor and substitute Stephen Noonan - whose superb overthe-shoulder effort was arguably the score of the match - kept the scoreboard moving. Defensively, we were outstanding throughout, with Tom Doyle, Sean Barry, Fionn Dineen, James Murphy and Mark O'Connor producing a composed display, releasing Conor O'Hare and Kieran O'Connor around midfield, both delivering immense performances. Killarney Valley AC NATIONAL: Killarney Valley AC enjoyed an outstanding weekend at the 123.ie Athletics Ireland National Senior Championships, returning home with a national senior medal, a club record, personal bests and a series of impressive performances. Jason O’Reilly produced the performance of his career to claim silver in the men's 400m hurdles, clocking a personal best of 53.52 seconds while breaking the Killarney Valley AC club record. Jack O’Leary continued his excellent season by breaking the 1:50 barrier for the first time, running a personal best of 1:49.98 in the 800m heats before finishing 10th in the national final. Sarah Leahy once again impressed in the women's 100m, progressing through the heats and semi-finals before placing fifth in the final in 11.75 seconds. Keelie O’Connor also reached the 100m semi-final, finishing 10th overall in 12.35 seconds. In the field events, Anna O’Shea, the youngest athlete in the women's pole vault final, finished eighth with a clearance of 2.90 metres, while Jordan Lee continued his strong form in the para shot put with an excellent throw of 12.86 metres. There was disappointment for Conor Kissane, whose 5,000m race ended prematurely due to injury. A national senior silver medal, a club record and a number of excellent performances highlighted another successful championship for Killarney Valley AC and reflected the club's continued progress at the highest level of Irish athletics. Killarney Swimming Club NATIONAL: Congratulations to five members of Killarney Swimming Club who proudly represented the club at the Irish Summer National Youth & Senior Championships recently. The prestigious five-day competition brought together Ireland’s top youth and senior swimmers, with athletes qualifying through demanding national standards. The championships were open to swimmers aged 15 years and over, providing
a fantastic opportunity for Killarney’s swimmers to compete against the country’s very best. Representing the club were Sarah Quirke, Divo Lucic Kovacevic, Samuel O’Neill, Beibhinn Kiely and Orlaith Mackey, all of whom produced excellent performances throughout the week. Sarah Quirke enjoyed an outstanding championship, reaching multiple A and B finals and recording a series of impressive personal bests, earning several Gold and Bronze Time Improvement Certificates along the way. Her highlights included top-eight finishes in both the 200m Butterfly and 200m Breaststroke, as well as an 11th-place overall finish in the 200m Individual Medley. Divo Lucic Kovacevic also had an excellent meet, qualifying for B Finals in both the 100m and 50m Breaststroke, while producing personal best performances and finishing among the top swimmers in his age group. Samuel O’Neill recorded an excellent personal best in the 50m Breaststroke, narrowly missing out on a B Final after finishing as first reserve. Beibhinn Kiely rounded off the championships in style by qualifying for the B Final of the 50m Breaststroke, where she finished 9th overall after producing a personal best. Orlaith Mackey also impressed with a strong personal best in the 50m Butterfly, climbing four places from her preliminary ranking. The swimmers were guided throughout the championships by Head Coach Sean Farndon, whose support and dedication continue to play an important role in the club’s success. Killarney Swimming Club congratulates all five swimmers on an outstanding week of racing. Their performances are a reflection of the hard work and commitment shown throughout the season, and the club is incredibly proud of the way they represented Killarney on the national stage.
Fossa Rowing Club VALENTIA REGATTA: Unfortunately last Saturday's scheduled Valentia Regatta was postponed due to the weather. However the county championships have been rescheduled to the 8th of August next. Everyone is looking forward to the next round of the county championships in Valentia. CASTLETOWNBERE REGATTA - THIS SUNDAY: This Sunday we have crews heading to West Cork to partake in the Castletownbere regatta. This promises to be another fantastic day out and we would like to wish our crews the very best of luck and safe travels to one and all.
Killarney Salmon & Trout Angling Club OUTING: The first of our juvenile outings to Lough Barfinnihy took place last Friday evening the 24th of July. Just over 20 juveniles enjoyed an evening’s angling along the lovely shoreline in great conditions - Thankfully a good
breeze kept any midges away and the sun graced us with its presence late into the evening. Once the horn sounded bringing an end to the evenings fishing, refreshments were availed of back at the car park and prizes were awarded to the lucky anglers on the night. The top three rods were: 1) Ronan Linehan, 2) Sam Cannan, 3) Sophie Mai Woulfe. We would like to say thanks again to all the parents who made the time to bring the juveniles up to the lake and all the club members who came along to assist and steward for the evening. The evenings success would not be possible without the support from Inland Fisheries Ireland who sponsored the permits for the event and also we would like to thank Denis O’Neill of Plunkett Street for his ongoing support of juvenile angling in the club. Our next juvenile outing will be on Friday evening the 21t of August when we fish for the Scruffy's Cup up at Barfinnihy Lake.
