Investigation complicated by extradition regulations The international investigation into the brutal murder of US native Jamey Carney has run into a wall of complex legal and diplomatic hurdles. Gardaí are working alongside international agencies to secure the return of the prime suspect from Jordan, but they face strict limits on their ability to directly question him or easily bring him back to Ireland. Under current international protocols, Gardaí are not currently permitted to travel to Jordan to question the chief person of interest in the investigation. It is understood that it will be weeks, at the very earliest, before Irish authorities can apply to Jordanian officials for a mutual assistance request to permit officers to travel there. Even if this permission is eventually granted, Gardaí would only be present in a strictly observational capacity. They would have no power to interview the suspect directly; instead, any questioning of the detained man would have to be carried out entirely by Jordanian authorities. Further complicating the matter is the fact that Ireland does not share an active extradition treaty with Jordan. Under Irish law, formal extradition requests can-

not even be initiated until the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) directs that charges are to be laid. Currently, 28-year-old Jordanian national Ahmad Al-Saqar has not been formally charged. Detective inspectors in Killarney are working as a matter of urgency on a comprehensive case file to submit to the DPP. Because Ms. Carney was an American citizen, US law enforcement agents have also joined the international effort, working alongside Gardaí, Interpol, and Europol to coordinate the diplomatic and

legal steps required to keep the suspect in custody in Jordan. Al-Saqar, who had been living in Ireland for approximately two years within the international protection system, was Jamey’s boyfriend in the months leading up to her death. Authorities established that he boarded a 3am night bus from Killarney to Dublin Airport on Tuesday, July 7, catching an early morning flight to Istanbul, Turkey, before traveling onward to Amman, where he was detained by Jordan’s Public Security Directorate.

By the time Jamey’s 13-year-old daughter tragically discovered her mother's body at their home in the Homeland estate on Muckross Road later that Tuesday afternoon, the suspect was already out of the jurisdiction. Gardaí are continuing to gather evidence in Killarney and are appealing to anyone who may have been on the Muckross Road between 11pm on Monday, July 6 and 5am on Tuesday, July 7 to provide any dashcam or CCTV footage they may have.

"She was your sunshine": Killarney bids farewell to Jamey Carney The town of Killarney fell quiet on Wednesday, July 15, as more than 200 mourners gathered at St. Mary’s Cathedral to say their final goodbyes to Jamey Carney. It was a deeply emotional farewell to the popular 43-year-old healthcare worker, who moved to Ireland from New York five years ago to embrace her Irish roots. The congregation, led by Jamey's 13-year-old daughter Michaela, her mother Kathy, and her sister Devon, listened to a moving service that celebrated a woman known for her bright,

vibrant, and incredibly kind nature. "Jamey was your sunshine," Father Kieran O'Brien told the grieving family during his homily. "Today we don't dwell on Jamey's death, but we dwell on her life. She was bright, cheerful, full of life, selfless, and kind. Joy radiated from her." Symbols of Jamey’s life were brought to the altar, including a photo of her beloved daughter Michaela, a picture of her dog Penny, and a cowboy hat representing her lifelong love of country music. Both Jamey and Michaela’s passports were also presented to symbolise their

shared passion for traveling the world. Her coffin was adorned with bright sunflowers, her favourite flower, representing her colourful and bright personality. Fr O’Brien reflected on how much Jamey loved her home in Kerry, noting that five years ago, her choice to move here was "regarded as her best decision." Following the service, teammates from Michaela’s Dr Croke's and members of a local rowing club formed a respectful guard of honour outside the cathedral as the hearse departed for a private cremation.

NEWS

Frontline staff at the Killarney Community Hospital have raised serious concerns regarding the highly anticipated move to the new state-of-theart facility built on the grounds of the old St Finan's site.

17.07.2026

Staff raise serious concerns over new hospital move

While the transition to the new 130bed Community Nursing Unit should mark a positive milestone for the town, workers say they have been left feeling unprepared, poorly informed, and unsupported. An anonymous staff member speaking on behalf of concerned colleagues explained that morale at the hospital is currently at an all-time low. The worker stressed that the decision to speak out is not about resisting progress, but about protecting patient care and staff welfare. “This should be an exciting milestone for our hospital, our residents and the wider community,” the staff member said. “Unfortunately, many frontline staff feel unprepared, poorly informed and unsupported during what should be one of the most positive developments in the hospital’s history.”

STAFF LEFT IN THE DARK

According to staff, one of the most hurtful aspects of the transition has been the lack of opportunity to familiarise themselves with the new workplace. While politicians and public officials have already toured the facility, those who will actually be delivering the care have largely been kept outside. “The move is expected to take place within the coming weeks, yet many staff have still not had the opportunity to see the new building,” the worker revealed. “Many found it upsetting to see public representatives being given tours while the staff who will be caring for residents in the new unit have not yet had the opportunity to familiarise themselves with the building. This has added to the feeling that frontline staff have not been prioritised throughout the transition.” Compounding this is a severe breakdown in regular communication. Many employees claim they are finding out vital details about their own workplace via social media rather than through official channels. Rostering remains a major issue, with several healthcare assistants still waiting for confirmed schedules. Some staff only receive their rotas two

weeks in advance, making it difficult to manage family life. Additionally, fulltime staff face uncertainty over whether their weekly hours are being increased from 39 to 42 hours without clear consultation. Efforts to resolve these issues through union representatives have reportedly left staff feeling ignored.

ROSTERING AND TRAINING PRESSURE

The scheduling of mandatory training has also drawn sharp criticism. Rather than integrating preparation into the normal working day, staff are being asked to attend training on their days off. “Most of the mandatory training is still being organised, with staff expected to attend sessions outside their rostered working hours rather than having this training incorporated into their normal working day,” the staff member said. “Many staff are already working additional shifts to help maintain services. Asking staff to attend mandatory training on their days off places further pressure on people trying to balance work, family responsibilities and everyday life.”

FRONTLINE STAFFING AND WELFARE CUTS

The physical size of the new unit on the old St Finan’s site is significantly larger than the existing hospital, prompting fears that staff will be stretched to their limits. Frontline workers had expected additional night-shift healthcare assistants to help manage the larger layout, but they say this support has not arrived. “There are also significant concerns regarding staffing in the new unit,” the worker explained. “Staff understood that an additional healthcare assistant would be available on night duty to support the move into a much larger building. However, that additional frontline support has not materialised. At the same time, several new management positions have already been filled, including two new night managers, with more managerial roles continuing to be advertised. While leadership is important, management roles cannot replace the additional frontline staff needed to provide direct care to residents during busy night shifts.” Staff welfare facilities are also being reduced. Unlike the current hospital, which offers a canteen where staff can buy a hot meal at a reasonable price, the new unit

Opening delayed as July deadline missed The long-awaited transfer of residents to the new 130-bed Killarney Community Nursing Unit did not take place on Monday, July 13, as had been previously planned. As the Killarney Advertiser closed for

press this Thursday, July 16, the initial opening deadline had officially been missed. The complex relocation project is designed to safely transfer 101 residents and patients from St Columbanus and the existing Killarney Community Hospital. The phased, five-day moving process is

set to begin with the transfer of residents from the dementia unit. The HSE recently held open evenings to allow residents and their families to tour the new building and confirmed that room allocations had already been agreed upon. However, the delay comes amid reve-

will not provide this service. This is despite the new site being located further away from local shops and food outlets, making it difficult for staff on demanding 12-hour shifts to access hot food.

LOSS OF PRAYER ROOM

There is also deep sadness over the lack of a dedicated quiet space in the new building. Despite initial understandings that a prayer room would be included, the space has reportedly been repurposed for extra bedrooms. The chapel at the current hospital has been a source of comfort for generations of Killarney families, particularly during end-of-life care. “For many members of staff, this hospital is far more than just a workplace,” the concerned employee concluded. “Some have spent their entire careers here and have dedicated decades of their lives to caring for the people of Kerry. Moving from a building that holds so many memories is naturally emotional. We are simply asking for better communication, meaningful engagement with frontline staff, appropriate staffing levels, proper support during this transition, and recognition of the heritage and values that have always been part of Killarney Community Hospital.” lations that crucial staff preparation is running significantly behind schedule. Sources have confirmed that key orientation days for the staff who will run the unit are not scheduled to take place until the week of August 12. This scheduling gap has created substantial confusion, as essential training is now set to occur weeks after the hospital’s originally proposed opening date.

Healy-Rae calls for urgent review of asylum process The recent murder of US national Jamey Carney in Killarney has prompted Kerry TD Danny HealyRae to demand an immediate and comprehensive review of Ireland's International Protection Accommodation Services (IPAS) and asylum procedures.

Clean up or lose it: We must protect our National Park

The Independent deputy confirmed he has formally contacted the Minister for Justice, urging him to take decisive action regarding how international protection applications are processed and managed nationally. Deputy Healy-Rae expressed serious frustration over the current management of the asylum system, stating that Ireland is increasingly being perceived internationally as a soft target. "When a person does not meet the criteria for asylum they should be escorted immediately out of the country," Deputy Healy-Rae said. "Ireland is seen as a push over and it is very clear we do not have enough immigration personnel to deal with the volume of people seeking asylum to ensure they are dealt with in a timely manner." The Kerry TD argued that the current system lacks the oversight necessary to protect local communities. "I have always asked that people coming

into Ireland are garda vetting and strict checks carried out on their backgrounds," he added. Following revelations that the prime suspect in the Carney investigation successfully fled back to Jordan, a country with which Ireland does not share an active extradition treaty, Deputy Healy-Rae argued that applications from certain nations should not be accommodated at all. "Certainly, we should not be taking in anybody from a country with which we do not have extradition agreements in place," he stated.

The gorgeous weather we have been enjoying recently has been nothing short of spectacular.

It has been one of the best summers in recent memory, drawing hundreds of people out into the heart of Killarney National Park. Families are hiking, friends are out boating, and our lakeside beaches are alive with people enjoying this incredible natural amenity. It is a fantastic sight, and long may it continue. Except, unfortunately, for some, basic respect for this beautiful landscape has completely vanished. Last Thursday night, Cormac Casey, the Managing Director of KC Print and owner of the Killarney Advertiser, was out kayaking with family and friends. Upon returning to the lakeshore, he was greeted by a incredibly disheartening sight. A family had packed up and gone home, leaving the complete remains of their picnic scattered across the shore to be collected by "whoever." Sandwich wrappers, soft drink cans, and plastic rubbish were simply abandoned on the ground. In this instance, the waste was picked up by caring passersby, but it could easily have blown into the pristine lakes or been

left for an already stretched park ranger to clear. This behavior is simply not good enough, and we must stamp out littering in our National Park once and for all. While our park rangers do fantastic work and remain highly active late into the summer evenings, they cannot be everywhere at once. We, as a community and as visitors, must take collective responsibility for this landscape. If you come across people discarding rubbish or dumping waste, do not be afraid to report them to the authorities. This is not about being a tell-tale; it is about protecting a unique, global treasure so that everyone can continue to enjoy it. If we do not address this mounting issue, we face the very real prospect of future restrictions being placed on park accessibility. If that happens, a selfish minority will have ruined it for the rest of us. The rule is simple: if you can bring it into the park, you can bring it home. Clean up after yourselves, or we will eventually lose the freedom to enjoy these spaces.

CONQUERING THE HARDMAN: Killarney club members pictured after successfully completing the grueling Waterville Half Triathlon as part of the Hardman events. The massive endurance challenge tested the local athletes to their limits, starting with a 1.9km swim in Waterville Bay, followed by a tough 95km cycle tackling the major mountain ascents of Coomakista, Ballaghbeama, and Ballaghisheen, before finishing with a demanding 13-mile run along the Waterville cliff road. Pictured are Micheal O’ Leidhin, Orla Houlihan, who claimed a fantastic third place lady overall, Oran O’ Donoghue, Danny Brosnan, and Caitriona Shanahan.

Human activity blamed for devastating wildfire in National Park A major wildfire that destroyed approximately 25 hectares of Killarney National Park on Tuesday evening, July 14, is believed to have been started by human activity. The blaze broke out in the Five Mile Bridge area of the park along the Killarney-Kenmare road at around 5pm. Members of the public quickly raised the alarm, enabling emergency services and National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) personnel to quickly mobilise to the scene. This early notification and swift action were critical in preventing the fire from escalating into a much more severe incident. Fire crews from Killarney and Kenmare responded to contain and suppress the fire, with on-ground support from NPWS staff. Aerial support was also deployed to assist ground crews, with helicopters using Bambi buckets to target the flames from above. The affected area is estimated to be around 25 hectares in size. It includes a mixture of dry heath, wet heath, and blanket bog, as well as pockets of native old oak woodland. NPWS Divisional Manager Eamonn Meskell praised the rapid coordination of the emergency response.

“Thanks to the rapid response and coordinated efforts of all emergency personnel, NPWS staff and dedicated fire emergency crew, Kerry Fire and Rescue Service crews, rapid aviation assistance was deployed which was very effective bringing the fire under control," Mr. Meskell said. "We will be on site on Wednesday morning to assess the affected area and monitor for any remaining hotspots and determine whether any further firefighting operations are required.” The Minister of State with special responsibility for Nature, Heritage and Biodiversity, Christopher O’Sullivan TD, expressed frustration at the cause of the blaze. “This is devastating and it was started by human activity," Minister O’Sullivan said. "It was completely avoidable. We can do better than this. Thank you to the National Parks and Wildlife staff and Kerry Fire and Rescue Service and aviation crews who battled the fires in Killarney National Park.” Photos by Valerie O'Sullivan

The Cathaoirleach of the Killarney Municipal District, John O’Donoghue, has issued a stark reminder to the public that campfires and barbecues are strictly forbidden anywhere within Killarney National Park. The warning follows a major wildfire at Five Mile Bridge on Tuesday evening, July 14, which required a massive coordinated response from emergency services to bring under control. Councillor O’Donoghue urged both locals and visitors to respect the rules in place to protect the local environment.

Mayor issues warning over National Park barbecues "I would like to remind everyone that camp fires and barbecues are strictly forbidden within the National Park," Cllr O’Donoghue said. "We are very lucky to have such a fabulous resource on our doorstep, and it is vital we do everything in our power to preserve it. Fires cause enormous damage to already fragile eco systems, so I plead with people to be respectful of our surroundings." The Mayor praised the rapid interven-

tion of the local fire crews and park staff, whose joint efforts prevented further devastation to the park's landscape. "I would like to commend our excellent fire service, along with the NPWS staff who worked side by side to bring last evening's blaze in Killarney National Park under control," he added. "This was an excellent display of co-operation and both are to be highly commended

Kerry Mountain Rescue Team issues warm weather warning Kerry Mountain Rescue Team (KMRT) has issued a warm weather warning for anyone climbing in the region after being called to assist a walker on Sunday. The rescue team was tasked to the Devil's Ladder area of Carrauntoohil (Corrán Tuathail) to help a climber experiencing severe exhaustion and dehydration. Volunteers successfully assisted the walker down to an awaiting vehicle. With the current heatwave continuing,

KMRT is reminding all hillwalkers to prepare adequately before setting out. The team recommends carrying at least one extra litre of water, wearing sunscreen, and using a peaked or widebrimmed hat. Walkers should set out early in the morning to ensure they are off the mountains before the peak heat builds in the middle of the day. KMRT also advises walkers to consider changing their plans to less strenuous routes or rescheduling their climbs entirely until temperatures drop.

for their efforts." With warm, dry weather expected to persist over the coming days, the Mayor warned that the risk of further fires remains high. He appealed to the public to remain vigilant and act responsibly. "Given this extended dry period is to continue, I am asking the public to play their part and do not do anything which places themselves or others in danger," Cllr O'Donoghue said.

Deerpark Pitch & Putt Club to host two major tournaments

The event is scheduled to begin at 10:30am and will be led by staff from the National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS). Diarmaid Griffin of the Fossa Climate Action Group said that the recent sunny weather has energised the local environment, making it an ideal time to observe local wildlife in abundance. "In Killarney, we are fortunate to live within an UNESCO Biosphere, which is a specially designated area of natural and cultural heritage with worldwide renown," Griffin said. He added that there are only 784 Biospheres globally, with just two located in Ireland. Following a review in 2017, the Kerry Biosphere Reserve was expanded beyond Killarney National Park. It now extends west to Lough Acoose to include the MacGillycuddy's Reeks, north to

Fossa and Kilcummin, and east to the Paps mountains. Griffin encouraged the public to participate to experience the health benefits of spending time outdoors. "Study after study proves that connection with nature boosts your immunity, reduces stress and anxiety, and improves sleep," he said. The event is free to attend, but booking is required. Members of the public can make enquiries or book a place by calling or texting Paul O'Raw on 0872317204.

Deerpark Pitch & Putt Club is preparing for a busy period as it gears up to host two major tournaments over the upcoming weekends. This coming Saturday and Sunday, July 18 and 19, the club will host the Munster Adult Strokeplay Championships. This marks the club’s first provincial hosting event since 2022, with top players from across Munster competing across six different grades. To ensure the course is in prime condition, the grounds have been closed for the past fortnight in preparation. Following the provincial championships, focus will shift to the August Bank Holiday weekend for the annual Ricky Kelly Memorial tournament, which runs from Friday, July 31 to Sunday, August 2. The popular three-ball scramble is open to teams containing at least one non-registered Pitch & Putt Ireland member. Commenting on the preparations, Club Chairman Sean Kelly thanked the members for their hard work during a challenging weather spell. “It’s slightly different for us this year in being closed at this time when we are normally very busy, but the work on our course is continuing apace despite the difficulties the recent heatwave has brought with it. We would like to thank all

our members who have helped out over the last few weeks in getting the course ready. We look forward to welcoming the province this weekend and invite people around Killarney to come and see some of the best players in the country take part. We are hosting the Ricky Kelly slightly earlier this year to allow members experience the quality of the level the course has been brought up to for the Munsters,” Mr. Kelly said. Sponsored by the Tatler Jack Bar, this year's Ricky Kelly Memorial marks the 35th anniversary of the event, and the 20th anniversary of the club's traditional Sunday barbeque, which first began in 2006. Entry is €60 for adult teams of three over 36 holes, while a separate Under-16 two-ball scramble over 18 holes is available for €10 per team. Rathmore’s Tearmann Lodge raises €1,200 for Kerry Hospice The staff and residents at Tearmann Lodge in Rathmore recently came together to raise €1,200 for the Kerry Hospice Foundation. The facility, which is run by the Kerry Parents & Friends Association, hosted a successful bingo evening and raffle in late March of this year. This follows a similar fundraising event held at the centre in 2024. Residents at the lodge were encouraged to participate in the evening, which proved to be a highly positive and enjoyable experience for everyone involved. Tearmann Lodge Manager Gillian Kenny facilitated the fundraiser, while staff member Irene O’Donoghue acted as the main organiser, with assistance from colleague Karen McCarthy and other members of the team. The residential facility provides accommodation for nine residents, alongside an extra bedroom used for respite care when needed. "Kerry Hospice would be close to the

hearts of many here, both residents and staff, whose loved ones have benefitted from the services provided by the charity. We are delighted to be in a position to give something back in return," Irene O'Donoghue said. Pat Doolan of the Killarney Branch of Kerry Hospice expressed his gratitude to everyone at the centre during the official cheque presentation. "This was another lovely gesture by all concerned and I want to thank them for their generosity. I spent some pleasant time over a cuppa with residents and staff members in the comfortable surroundings at Tearmann Lodge on the day of the cheque presentation. Esther Kelleher, who is a resident at the centre, entertained us with a lovely song," Pat Doolan said

Library upgrade works to begin next week Work on new, fully accessible public toilet facilities at Killarney Library is set to begin on Monday, July 20, marking the realisation of a project first tabled over two years ago. The upgrade was initially put forward by Councillor Marie Moloney in May 2024, when she raised a motion at a Kerry County Council meeting highlighting the unacceptable lack of disabled toilets in a public building. At the time, Cllr Moloney noted that while access ramps were in place, several library users with disabilities were disappointed by the lack of facilities. "I will be keeping the pressure on to have these facilities provided as soon

as possible," she stated at the time. Delivered by the Council's Facilities Section, the upcoming works are expected to be completed in the autumn. The development will provide a new entrance to the toilet area, a fully accessible toilet, and baby changing facilities. Killarney Library will remain open throughout the construction period, with all regular services continuing as normal. To ensure safety, the front porch, the existing public toilets, and the events room will be temporarily closed. Visitors will access the library via a signposted side entrance, and alternative public toilets will be available nearby at the High Street Car Park.

Staff Nurse Paula O' Connor enjoying her last day at work with her friends and collegues. Paula worked for 25 years in Killarney Community Hospital on all wards. Finishing her last few years on Fuschia Ward. All the staff and residents on Fuschia Ward are wishing her the very best of luck.

That’s according to BOYLE Sports who recently revealed the top favourites. It has been 62 years since Tralee Rose Margaret O’Keeffe scored a local victory in the annual event. But the 28-year-old Kerry Rose will be heading to the Dome next month with an impressive resumé, which includes founding The Light House

Project, an initiative supporting communities facing poverty and social challenges. The English teacher will however face stiff competition for the coveted crown, as she currently shares the favourite’s tag with Dublin Rose Suad Mooge, a 26-yearold medical scientist who includes kung fu on a long list of active hobbies. Ciara McGinty (New York) and Fiona Gaffney (Chicago) are also rated as leading contenders according to early odds of 10/1 and 12/1, with the winner set to be crowned on August 18.

Vintage Club clinches second place in national tractor restoration final The Killarney Valley Classic and Vintage Club secured second place and a €2,000 prize at the national Ferguson 20 restoration final in Wexford last weekend. The prestigious showcase, organised by AXA and the Irish Vintage Society CLG, took place in Clohamon, Co. Wexford. The initiative challenged heritage enthusiasts from all over the country to return a classic Grey Ferguson 20 tractor to its original state. While Wexford's own Clonroche/Poulpeasty Vintage Club walked away with the top prize of €5,000, the Killarney team’s outstanding craftsmanship earned them the runner-up spot

on the podium. The local entry is a diesel-powered Ferguson TEF 20 owned by John Howard, whose father originally bought the vehicle in the mid-1960s. "It's a Ferguson TEF 20 diesel, it was the first tractor that came to the farm, and when it came it did all sorts of work," Mr Howard said. "It was in kind-of-poor repair because it had been used down through the years". Killarney Valley Classic and Vintage Club

Chairman Tom Leslie explained that the vehicle was running before the project began, but required intensive restoration to meet competitive standards. "The engine was quite good in it, but the bodywork needed a lot of attention," Mr Leslie said. "It all needed a good tidy-up, and then of course the final finish was key here to this competition". The restoration was aided by spare components Mr Howard had previously kept in storage, with the remainder sourced by club members at various vintage exhibitions across Ireland. Mr Howard expressed great pride in

Former Killarney Mayor to lead Southern Regional Assembly Councillor Bobby O’Connell of Kerry County Council has been elected as the Cathaoirleach of the Southern Regional Assembly for the 2026-2027 term. The election took place at the assembly's annual meeting on Friday, July 10, at Assembly House on O’Connell Street in Waterford. Cllr O’Connell succeeds Cllr Andrew McGuinness of Kilkenny County Council in the role. Cllr O’Connell is the longest-serving member of Kerry County Council, having served the people of the county since 1991. Over his career, he has been elected in four different electoral areas and two

constituencies: Mid Kerry and the Dingle Area in 1991; the Tralee Area in 1999 and 2004; the Killarney Area in 2009 and 2014; and the Castleisland Area in 2019. He has also previously served as the Mayor of Kerry from 2009 to 2010 and as the Mayor of the Killarney Municipal Area from 2015 to 2016. Speaking on his election to the regional body, Cllr O’Connell expressed his gratitude and outlined his goals for the upcoming term. “I am deeply honoured to assume the Chain of Office as Cathaoirleach of the Southern Regional Assembly," Cllr O'Connell said. "At a time when regional leadership has never been more important, the

seeing the finished machine restored to its former glory, noting that the vehicle holds deep "sentimental value to myself and my family". The award-winning tractor is now set to go on public display across Munster and beyond. "We're delighted to be on the winning podium with second prize in this competition," Mr Leslie added. "This is going to go to our shows now locally in Kerry and Cork, and we'll also have it at the National Ploughing display for the Irish Vintage stand because we're very proud in the club". With the national competition wrapped up, Killarney Valley members are already working on their next build, restoring a Ford 7600 imported from France. Once complete, the tractor will be auctioned, with the surplus proceeds going to a local charity.

role of the Regional Assemblies continues to grow in significance. As a vital tier of governance, the Southern Regional Assembly plays a central role in shaping economic, spatial and sustainable development, ensuring that the needs and ambitions of our communities are reflected in national policy and investment." "I look forward to working closely with my fellow Assembly Members, colleagues from across the political spectrum, our local authorities, and our many stakeholders in a spirit of partnership and shared ambition. Together, we have an important programme of work ahead, and I am committed to ensuring that the Assembly continues to provide strong regional leadership, champion balanced development, and help deliver positive outcomes for the people and communities of the Southern Region.”

A WEEKLY ROUND-UP OF NEWS • VIEWS FROM KERRY AND AROUND THE WORLD

INSPIRED BY DANNY CASEY

Dáil breaks up for summer recess The Dáil has broken up for its summer recess, with TDs and Ministers beginning their annual break. Members are not scheduled to return until September 17. It comes as fuel prices are starting to rise at the pumps amid ongoing tensions in the Middle East. The Department of Enterprise is also set to

present a report on the Aughnish Almunia plant in Limerick regarding materials that may end up in Russia’s supply chain. Ireland has begun its EU presidency, which is set to last for 6 months, with Ministers holding meetings with other EU ministers. With the Dáil not returning until September, preparations are expected to be well underway for Octo-

ber’s Budget, which will be announced just one month after TDs return to Leinster House. The summer break will likely provide some relief for the Government following a challenging few months, which saw it face a number of controversies, including fuel protests and blockades in April.

Hosepipe ban in place for parts of Ireland Six areas around the country have been issued with a six-week hosepipe ban as a new Status Yellow heat warning has been put in place by Met Eireann. The water conservation order will remain in place until August 26 for Dublin, south Tipperary, parts of Kildare, Meath, Wexford and Wicklow. People are being asked to reduce their non-essential water use to protect supplies for homes, hospitals and essential services. Watering gardens with a hose or washing vehicles are banned as part of the order. Meanwhile, Met Éireann have issued another Status Yellow high temperature warning, which will come into effect at 12pm tomorrow. This warning is for Carlow, Kilkenny, Laois, Offaly, Wexford, Cork, Limerick, Tipperary and Waterford. It will come to an end at 8pm tomorrow. Coillte has warned of a high risk of forest fires while retailers are being encouraged to suspend the sale of disposable barbecues for the present time.

Only 1 in 4 drivers know what to do after an accident 75% of drivers are unsure of what to do if involved in a collision. That’s according to new research from Aviva Insurance Ireland DAC which revealed that there is a confidence gap following collisions, shaping how drivers’ response, how they drive afterwards and how to make a claim. More than 4 in 10 (42%) say they have delayed or avoided making a claim for minor damage due to cost concerns. Only 4% say a collision had no lasting impact on their driving, with 19% saying they now leave more space between vehicles. Following a collision, 19% of drivers say they are more alert to potential hazards, while 15% check their mirrors more often and 14% drive more slowly. The Aviva study, conducted among 1,000 drivers nationwide, highlights how confidence shapes what driv-

ers do after an incident – from how they respond at the scene, to how they drive afterwards and whether they decide to make a claim. This lack of confidence comes at an important time for road safety. With fatalities on Irish roads rising in recent years, how drivers respond in the moments after a recent collision, and how they drive afterwards, can play a key role in keeping themselves and others safe. Practical steps can be taken to help drivers stay safe. These include stopping safely and making the scene safe, using hazard lights where needed, checking for injuries and calling emergency services if anyone needs help, exchanging key details with other drivers, including contact and insurance information and noting important details such as the time, location, road conditions and any damage.

Advice issued for pet owners and farmers during hot weather Animal owners are being advised on how to mind their animals during the continued spell of high temperatures in Ireland.

Paramedic recognised for rescue in Dingle Paramedic James O’Neill, of the Shannon Search and Rescue Helicopter base, has been presented with the Billy Deacon SAR Memorial Trophy. The 2026 award, which recognises rescues carried out in 2025, is for James’s role in the rescue of 14 crew members from the 28-metre French fishing vessel ‘Fastnet’. The fishing vessel 'Fastnet' suffered engine failure soon after leaving Dingle Harbour. It was then driven ashore at the base of steep cliffs. Its 14 crew were in a life-threatening situation. The Rescue helicopter based at Shannon arrived on scene and its captain and crew prepared for a winching operation. James was placed aboard. He managed to locate the 14 crew who were sheltering in the wheelhouse. James reassured them, and after locating the best winching area, organised them with a calm assertiveness, for evacuation. Under extreme pressure and showing superb professionalism in a

high-risk environment James briefed and prepared the crew for winching. He then prioritised the evacuation order, managed the high line and calmly facilitated the lifting of the crew, two at a time, up to the Rescue helicopter, all while coping with the unstable deck, relentless pounding of the Atlantic swell, near gale force winds and the hazards of the cluttered and slippery deck. The winching operation took an exhausting 50 minutes to complete, with the helicopter transferring the entire crew in two sorties to a prepared landing site on the cliff top, on completion James himself was winched to the safety of the helicopter. George Rawlinson MBE, Award Committee Chair, said “This incredibly demanding rescue was completed with a calm professionalism, despite considerable personal risk to James. James showed magnificent leadership skills in organising the 14 crew for evacuation prioritising their safety at considerable risk to himself.”

Iconic Kerryman jokes book celebrates half-century Mercier Press recently celebrated a milestone in Irish publishing with the launch of the 50th anniversary edition of The Book of Kerryman Jokes. The celebratory event, which took place at the fittingly named Kerryman’s Bar in Dillon’s Cross, Cork, marked five decades of one of the country's most iconic, if sometimes controversial, humour collections. Penned by the Des McHale, this newly released and updated book brings the classic collection to a brand-new generation of readers. First published in the 1976, it quickly became a household staple across

Ireland, sparking decades of laughter, debate, and plenty of lighthearted banter between Kerry and its neighbouring counties. While this distinct brand of humour has occasionally divided opinion over the years, there is no denying its enduring place in the landscape of Irish popular culture. Speaking at the launch, representatives from Mercier Press expressed their delight at marking half a century of this unique publishing phenomenon. The updated volume preserves the sharp wit of the original release while introducing refreshed material tailored for modern audiences.

Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Martin Heyon TD, has urged farmers, horse and pet owners to take steps to protect their animals in the heat, avoiding serious health and welfare problems. The Government has released key steps for ensuring the safety of animals. These include, ensuring a plentiful supply of drinking water, ensuring access to suitable shade or shelter, minimise handling and transport, and monitoring livestock closely for health issues or heat stress. Dog owners are advised to be aware of the signs of heat stroke. If dogs become too hot, this may lead to heat stroke,

a serious condition which can be fatal. Farmers and outdoor workers are urged to stay safe in the sun by avoiding the intense heat during peak hours from 11am to 3pm. When outside farmers should wear light, loose-fitting clothes that cover the skin, alongside a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses. Check working machinery regularly for overheating bearings, belts and other components that may give rise to fires. Clear dust build ups and debris from machinery regularly and be careful of hot vehicle exhausts/ catalytic converters when working in dried hay/crops. Meanwhile, Minister of State with responsibility for Forestry, Farm Safety and Horticulture, Niall Collins TD, has called for vigilance on the possible outbreaks of fires

Govt to draft legislation for Pregnancy Loss Leave Bill The proposed Pregnancy Loss Leave Bill will provide a statutory entitlement to five days of paid leave each year for individuals who experience pregnancy loss before 23 weeks, recognising the significant emotional and physical impact such a loss can have. The leave will be paid by the employer, at 70% of the daily rate capped at €110 a day, in line with statutory sick leave. The leave will require medical certification. Fianna Fáil TD for Kerry and member of the Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health, Michael Cahill, has warmly welcomed the Government’s decision to draft legislation introducing statutory paid leave for those who experience pregnancy loss before 23 weeks gestation. Deputy Cahill previously called for the introduction of paid miscarriage leave, having written to the Taoiseach on the issue and submitted

PQs following representations from several constituents. He said today’s announcement represents a significant and compassionate step forward. Deputy Cahill said: “Pregnancy loss is a devastating experience for individuals and families and it is only right that our laws recognise the need for time to grieve and recover without the added pressure of work or financial concerns.”

The Killarney Towers Hotel Killarney Historic Rally will move to a new Sunday date for its 30th anniversary running. The event is scheduled to take place on Sunday, November 29, marking the opening round of the 2027 Irish Tarmac Rally Championship Historic category. Five-time World Rally Championship event winner Paul Nagle will spearhead the event as Clerk of the Course. The appointment carries personal significance, as Nagle is the son of the late Maurice Nagle, the founder of the rally. The first Killarney Historic Rally was organised by Maurice Nagle in December 1996, after the international Rally of the Lakes moved to its permanent May Bank Holiday weekend slot. Having served on the organising committee for the old winter Rally of the Lakes, Maurice maintained that Killarney had the capacity to host a motorsport event during the winter period. Over the last three decades, it has grown into Ireland’s only dedicated event for historic rally machinery, where an overall victory is as coveted as a win at the international event in May. "Taking on the role of Clerk of the Course for the 30th anniversary is a massive honour, but more importantly, it is an opportunity to protect and build upon the legacy my father left behind," said Paul Nagle. "He believed that Killarney’s classic stages were the perfect arena to showcase historic

cars, and he fought hard to establish this. Reaching 30 years of Ireland's only dedicated historic rally proves his vision was right. We are fully committed to making this anniversary edition a special event that honours his memory and celebrates the history of historic motorsport." Nagle has promised a return to the classic Killarney tarmac that defined the event's early years, confirming that stages such as Ballaghbeama Pass and Caragh Lake

will feature on the itinerary for the Killarney Towers Hotel Killarney Historic Rally. Since retiring from professional co-driving in 2023. Nagle has worked as an FIA Safety Delegate on several World Rally Championship events. Work is now underway to secure a strong field of historic rally cars, with some star names expected to join the Irish Tarmac Rally Championship regulars on the entry list. His experience in event management, combined

with his international contacts, is currently being used to attract an expanded entry list. A promotional push is underway to secure a large field of historic rally cars, including several drivers from overseas. The event retains the title sponsorship of the Killarney Towers Hotel and Leisure Centre, located on College Street in the centre of Killarney town. Managing Director of the O’Donoghue Ring Collection and Killarney Towers Hotel and Leisure Centre, Gemma Ring commented: "We are incredibly proud to continue our partnership with the Killarney Historic Rally as we enter our fourth year as title sponsor. This year's event is especially significant as the rally celebrates its 30th anniversary, a remarkable milestone for one of Ireland's most iconic motorsport events. At the O'Donoghue Ring Collection, we have always been passionate about supporting events that showcase the very best of Killarney. The Historic Rally brings together competitors, enthusiasts and visitors from across Ireland and beyond, creating a fantastic atmosphere throughout the town while making a valuable contribution to our local businesses.

O'Sullivan and Cremin win Killarney Endurance Trial John O'Sullivan and JJ Cremin claimed victory at the third Killarney Endurance Trial last weekend. Driving a Toyota Yaris, the pair finished ahead of Kieran Hayes and W illiam Boxwell in a Toyota Starlet, with John Cooney and Adam Cooney completing the podium in a Subaru Impreza.

Organised by the Killarney and District Motor Club, the two-day event was based in Faha and attracted over 40 crews. Speaking after the event, the club's Mike O'Shea thanked organisers Finbarr Hanratty and Diarmuid O'Shea, alongside the marshals and officials who ran the trial. He highlighted the support of local

landowners, Charlie Coakley of Woodlands Equestrian Centre, Listry GAA, and the board of management of Listry School for providing facilities. The final standings reflected a strong performance for Toyota machinery. Behind the top three, Timmy Lynch and Niall Myers took fourth and best KDMC crew, Dave Forde and Becky Hollins-

head finished fifth, and Ricky Roycroft and Cathal Bourke ended the weekend in sixth. Andy Purser and Sean Beechinor secured seventh, followed by Geoffrey Conboy and Joey Finneran in eighth. Conor Horgan and Eoin Foley placed ninth, with TJ O'Brien and Paul Reilly completing the top ten.

Mystery stone pillars on trial route puzzle local motor club Last weekend's Killarney Endurance Trial left competitors and organisers with an unanswered question.

Endurance trials are a cheap, cheerful, and ideal entry-level form of motorsport for beginners. Instead of closed special stages, these events use farm tracks and narrow green lanes. This format brings people to remote rural locations they would otherwise never visit, which was the case on Saturday afternoon on farmland near Ballyfinnane. During the test, competitors spotted three stone pillars, similar to the one pictured beside a competing car.

Some suggest these structures may be triangulation pillars, commonly known as trig pillars or trig points. Historically used by the Ordnance Survey for mapping, a typical trig pillar is a hand-cast concrete structure standing four feet high with a two-foot square base that tapers to a flat top. They usually feature a metal "spider" or top plate to secure a theodolite, alongside an identifying number on a side bracket. However, the exact origin of these Ballyfinnane pillars remains unconfirmed. If any readers can shed light on their history, please email info@killarneyadvertiser. ie.

STORY

17.07.2026

A new weekly series from Killarney Advertiser's Jess Jukes Felicity jogged down the track, no longer focussed on the gorgeous surroundings or the refreshing breeze on her face as she went. Being out here on her own made her uneasy.

A new weekly series from Killarney Advertiser's Jess Jukes

Before too long, Felicity found the signal she needed. She made the call to the emergency services, and delivered the details exactly as Jack had asked her to. The operator on the other end of the phone assured her that mountain rescue would be there soon to retrieve Anthony, the casualty they had found, and bring him down the mountain to hospital. Felicity made her way back up to Anthony and Jack almost as fast as she had sped away from them. When she returned, Jack had Anthony sat beneath a foil blanket and was convincing him to drink water and snack on an offered chocolate bar. “Look man,” she heard him saying “if you’ve been out here for long you’re probably dehydrated. You don’t even have any water with you. Just do yourself a favour and hydrate at the very least.” Begrudgingly, Anthony took the water. Jack turned to face her. Felicity spoke before he could. “The operator said they should be here within the hour.” “Good Lord above I’d hope so!” was what Anthony said between sups of water. Looking at him, Felicity had no idea how Jack had convinced him to wear the foil banket. He seemed rather ornery. She could understand that being stuck on a mountainside with what was probably a broken leg was upsetting. However, it seemed more than the normal sort of difficult, upset behaviour one would expect. It wasn’t too long before the emergency services arrived, mountain rescue swooping in like superheroes. Anthony was quickly irritated by having to repeat his story to the paramedics, and when he refused to talk to them Jack stepped in and filled in the details, telling them what Anthony had last drank and eaten too. The paramedics thanked Jack and whisked the ever-cranky Anthony away. The trek back to the car park afterwards seemed dull in comparison to their beautiful morning and eventful afternoon. Both Jack and Felicity were quiet and subdued. Jack dropped Felicity back to her Auntie Sheila’s, where she filled her aunt in on what happened. “Do you know what I can’t get over though,” her aunt said after listening to the tale “is why he was hiking on his own with no gear. It seems a bit thoughtless.” Felicity shrugged. “If Jack hadn’t stopped me, then I would’ve gone up in Ugg boots. Maybe he wasn’t local, or wasn’t used to mountains?” Her aunt let out a considering “hmm”, but they didn’t speak of it again as they curled up on the couch and started their weekly episode of ‘NCIS’.

RELAXATION

After their adventure up Carrauntoohil, Auntie Sheila told Felicity and Jack that they were in dire need of a break. “I can respect the great outdoors,” she told them, “as long as I get a good spa day in somewhere. And with that philosophy in

mind, I’m taking ye to Aghadoe Heights.” Jack protested greatly at his invite to the spa, but Auntie Sheila compromised that he would join them for afternoon tea instead of the whole day. The morning of their booking, Auntie Sheila insisted they spent a few hours in town shopping. They went to charity shops and popped into the Curious Cat for coffee before Auntie Sheila went into MacBees whilst Felicity went around to Hazel’s vintage shop. Auntie Sheila dragged Felicity into the Irish Pub Shop as well to pick up some trinkets and souvenirs for herself and her parents. The boot of the car was brimming with shopping bags by the time Auntie Sheila drove them up to Aghadoe. Upon arriving Auntie Sheila parked and got out of the car, but much to Felicity’s surprise she walked away from the hotel. Felicity chased after her across the road to a viewing area. Beyond lay lakes and mountains, and the greenest of fields. It was absolutely breath taking. Felicity sat next to where Auntie Sheila rested on a bench overlooking the view. “How could anybody leave a place like this?” she asked. Auntie Sheila shook her head sadly but said nothing. They sat together for another five minutes before Auntie Sheila rose again. “Time for our treatment so poppet.” The two women went into the hotel, were greeted and soon let loose upon the facilities. They spent a lot of time lounging and chatting. “What do you want to do in college?” Auntie Sheila asked as they were stepping out of the sauna. Felicity considered. “I haven’t thoughts about it too much,” she said. “I’d like to do something with a nice mix of physical activity and desk work.” Auntie Sheila laughed. “Wouldn’t we all, sweetie. What an ideal world that would be. I was lucky, I sort of had that in my job. Though some months were definitely more paperwork than I would’ve liked.” “Well I wouldn’t mind following you into detective work.” “That would be a fairly easy path for you. I know one of the sergeants. He’s getting on in years but he’s looking to take on an apprentice as he approaches retirement. Doesn’t trust anyone who he hasn’t trained to close his cases, he says. You should apply.” Felicity hummed in thought as she followed Auntie Sheila who was beelining towards the jacuzzi. They spent another couple of hours hopping between massage appointments, sunbeds, and the various other amenities before realising it was time to meet Jack. “Come on Auntie Sheila, we can’t be late,” Felicity prodded at where her aunt lay on one of the sunbeds. With reluctance her aunt followed her towards the changing rooms. Tune in next week to see what happens ...

KNOW YOUR RIGHTS

Legal implications of a broken engagement Most couples get engaged before they get married. If the engagement is broken (called off) and there is a dispute between the couple over property or finances, the Family Law Act 1981 allows them to take legal action against each other. The Act also allows an involved third party (such as a family member) to take legal action. Before the Family Law Act 1981 came into effect, an engagement was considered a legally binding contract. This meant that, if the engagement was broken without lawful justification, the person responsible could be sued for damages for breach of promise. Since the 1981 Act, you cannot take legal action for breach of promise following a broken engagement. These rules relate to engaged couples. Cohabitation (living together) does not necessarily mean that a couple is engaged to marry. What happens to gifts which had been exchanged between the engaged couple? If an engaged couple exchanges gifts, including an engagement ring, there's a presumption that these gifts will be returned if one of them asks for them back

in the event of the engagement ending. However, if the person that gives the gift dies, it is presumed any gifts were given without any conditions. In this case, the surviving fiancé(e) can keep the gifts. You can contest either of these presumptions in court if there is evidence to the contrary. You may be able to challenge either of these presumptions in court by presenting evidence that contradicts them. What happens to gifts from a third party such as a family member or friend? If someone gives an engaged couple (or one of the couple) a wedding gift, it is presumed that the couple are joint owners. This can be contested in court if there is evidence to the contrary. It is also presumed that the gift will be returned (if requested), should the engagement end and the marriage does not take place for any reason. This includes the death of one of the engaged couple. If a third party gives a substantial benefit (not a wedding gift) to one of the couple as a result of the engagement, the third party can take legal action if the engagement ends. For example, if a relative carries out or pays for substan-

How To Win The World Cup!!! By Nicky Barry

Every World Cup country, has its own style of play, Which reflects its people, in all their different ways. They all have fierce ambitions, to win the World Cup, And will run forever, when their tails are up. Some of them are big and strong, but lack subtlety, While others are small and cute, but have alacrity. First they need a keeper, who can jump and dive, And who just gets in the way, of little flicks and drives. Then they need two centre-backs, who are good in the air, To control the central channel, winning their fair share. On either side they need wing-backs, to defend and attack, And who can raid along the wings, and then scurry back. In mid-field they need enforcers, who know how to tackle, And dominate the area, like territorial jackals. Up front they need deft strikers, with two golden boots, Who know how to dribble, and then when to shoot. Now they need a manager, who is a psychologist, Who is good with people, and can handle egoists. It helps to if Lady Luck, is there by his side, To guide the ball into the net, instead of inches wide!!

tial work to improve a property which the couple had intended to use as their family home, the relative can apply to the courts for compensation. Can somebody claim compensation for wedding preparation expenses if the wedding is cancelled? If an engagement ends, and one person has spent a lot of money preparing for the wedding (without getting any benefit from it), that person can ask the courts for compensation from their former fiancé(e). Examples of expenses might include: • Booking the wedding reception • Booking the honeymoon • Hiring a photographer or videographer If somebody else (for example, a family member or friend) has spent a lot of money preparing for the wedding on behalf of one of the couple (and has not benefited), they may also apply to the courts for compensation. What are the property rights of engaged couples when the engagement ends? When a couple (whose engagement has ended) disagrees about the division of property, it is treated in the same way as

disputes between a married couple who are separating or divorcing. This only applies to property in which either or both of them had a beneficial interest while they were engaged. It does not apply to property acquired after the engagement ended. What are the options for legal action? If your engagement has ended and you want to take legal action, you must do so within 3 years. Such cases are usually heard in the Circuit Court. However, if very valuable property is involved, you may ask that it be heard in the High Court. Legal actions in relation to substantial, non-wedding gifts from a third party (or wedding preparation expenses), can be brought in the District Court if the amount sought is under €15,000. Legal advice should be sought before taking any legal action If you need further information about any of the issues raised here or have other questions, you can drop-in to your local Citizens Information Service in Tralee, Killarney or Caherciveen – opening hours are listed on our website www.citizensinformation.ie

“Believe me if all those Endearing young charms, Which I gaze on so fondly today Were to change by tomorrow And fleet in my arms, Like fairy gifts fading away, Thou would still be adored, As this moment thou art, Let thy loveliness fade as it will And around the dear ruin, Each wish of my heart, Would entwine itself verdantly still, It is not while beauty And youth are their own And thy cheeks unprofaned by a tear, That the fervour and faith Of a soul can be known, To which time will but make Thee more dear, Oh the heart that has truly loved, Never forgets, But as truly loves on to the close, As the sun flower turns On her God when he sets, The same look, which she turned, When he rose”.

In loving memory of Patrick and Kathleen O’Sullivan late of Swinemount, Firies who fell asleep on 18th July 1997 and 2nd March 2020. Clifford brothers excel as Kerry see off dangerous Dubs ALL-IRELAND FOOTBALL SEMI-FINAL _________________________________________________________________________

Kerry

2 - 18 | Dublin 0 - 20

CROKE PARK Defending champions Kerry are through to their fourth All-Ireland final in five years following a hard-fought four-point win over Dublin in a packed Croke Park on Sunday. They had to ride their luck at times. The locals questioned the decision to award Kerry an early penalty, which eventually resulted in a David Clifford a goal, while Seán O’Brien’s fisted effort that landed in Dublin’s net should have been chalked off for a square ball. Both were key moments, as was Mike Breen’s clearance off the line that could easily have been given as a Dublin goal, MVP: Paudie Clifford of Kerry evades Cian Murphy of Dublin. so one can understand how Ger Brennan and co. might have left the stadium feeling aggrieved. There was also an element of good fortune about Clifford’s timid penalty attempt as it popped straight back up after being stopped by Evan Comerford, which allowed the star forward to gather possession and blast it into the unguarded side of the goal. With that being said, Jack O’Connor’s men were dogged and determined on the day and

with Paudie Clifford (0-5), David Clifford (1-5) and Seánie O’Shea (0-4) all immense, amongst others, it would be unfair to suggest that the better team did not go through. The result sends the Kingdom into another decider, this time against Mayo who easily saw off the challenge of Louth in the other semi-final. The Connacht side were goal hungry on the day, eventually racking up three of them en route to a convincing 3-23 to 0-15 win. The All-Ireland final will be played on Sunday week, July 26, at 3.30pm. Mayo will be bidding for their fourth title and their first since 1951. Kerry, meanwhile, are on the brink of title number 40 – and back-to-back triumphs for the first time since 2006-2007. Let the scramble for tickets commence.

Get ready for the most wonderful time of the year | By Adam Moynihan You can keep Christmas. We don’t need it. This is Killarney, where All-Ireland week is the most wonderful time of the year. The decorations are up, that baggy, gradated 2004 jersey is down from the attic, and spirits are high. Friends and family reunite and reminisce about old times. We eat well and drink plenty. It’s not all about the gifts, you see (although Luke Quinn at the Kerry GAA Store is flat out dispensing presents like a green and gold Santa Claus). If we’re very lucky we’ll get the two greatest gifts of all – that coveted golden ticket, followed later by some silver. The festivities will be enjoyed to the

maximum here at home and abroad in Dublin. If things go really well, we might even end up forgetting what day it is… Outsiders probably think we get tired of all this mirth. This is, after all, our fourth All-Ireland in five years and our 64th in total. At this stage, what’s all the fuss about? But the build-up to an All-Ireland final simply never gets old. It brings merriment to the masses, conjures memories of glories past, and sparks dreams of triumphs still to come. Even the Grinches, those heartless creatures who for whatever bizarre, unknowable reason are not maniacally obsessed with the Kerry senior football team, find themselves getting swept up in the hysteria. They just can’t help it.

Once All-Ireland final week takes a hold, your heart size multiplies three-fold. FEVER PITCH It is a magical feeling, though, walking through town and seeing the jerseys and the colour and the posters (see our centrefold for our own contribution). You could stroll down High Street in November and hear two old ladies debating the ins and outs of a junior club game but the grá for football really reaches fever pitch towards the end of July (or September back in the old days). It’s great being stopped in the street or cornered in a pub to talk about team selection or the opposition or tickets or whatever. You can feel the passion, and I suppose we all rub off on each other that way. The excitement builds and

builds, so much so that by the time the ball is thrown in on Sunday week, we’ll be ready to run through walls. And that’s just the supporters. It must be a wonderful experience for the players too and I’m sure we would all like to wish them well as they prepare for another big day in Croke Park. Kerry have been installed as strong favourites to win No. 40 but this group have been around long enough to know that all that speculation and talk is just outside noise. It’s all about being professional and businesslike from now until the final hooter. If they can do that, hopefully everything else should fall into place. More on Kerry v Mayo next Friday. Merry All-Ireland week to all who celebrate.

Lady Luck smiles at Kerry in Croker | By Eamonn Fitzgerald “You’se were lucky, very lucky with those three brutal refereeing decisions,” was the opening salvo in our post-match get-together after Croker. It reeled back over 50 years to Finglas and Erin’s Isle. Paul kicked off the postmatch analysis as former Dubs star teammates of the fairly distant past, Mick Deegan and Charlie Redmond nodded and smiled. Those All-Star Dubs of the Dr Pat O’Neill management era were key figures in that 1995 Dublin win, defeating Tyrone 1-10 to 0-12. Peter Canavan scored 11 of the 12 Tyrone points. Charlie, also a brilliant free-taker, scored the goal from play. The game is remembered for the extra busy referee Paddy Russell. Dublin won. You win some; you lose some. A nod is as good as a wink. We understood about swings and roundabouts. All three were disappointed that Dublin lost out to Kerry at Croker but they were gracious in defeat, enjoying the Culchie v Jackeens banter.

KERRY LUCK

Where would you be without luck to survive, and Kerry did survive. They rode their luck, sailing close to the wind but

tacking smartly. When Henry VIII dissolved St Peter’s Abbey in Westminster, he directed the money to repair St Paul’s Cathedral. That was in the 16th century, which gave rise to the phrase, robbing Peter to pay Paul. 500 years later, the same story at Croke Park. Davy Byrne did a very fine job of man-marking David Clifford and without resorting to fouling. So far so good, like the parachuter in mid-air, and whenever the ball was directed towards David, at least two more of the Dubs came to crowd out Kerry’s greatest player. However, it was a case of robbing David to pay for the destruction Paudie did, controlling the whole game. He must have handled the ball 100 times, and with all the space in the world, he orchestrated Kerry’s win. The Jim McGuinness fatal error was reincarnated. It’s like cutting a bush on the fence at Lakeview and putting it into the gap at the Two Mile at the other end of the Fossa parish, shifting the problem, not solving it. Now Dulin had two problems instead of one. Look at the scoreboard. Kerry 2-18 Dublin 0-20. That is 20 Kerry scores, 20 Dublin scores and the Fossa brother still scored more than 50% of the winning Kerry score. Further prolonging the agony for Dublin, the losers shot 11 wides to Kerry’s 4. That's a crucial statistic to

explain why Dublin lost. Even if they improved their conversion by 50% they would have won. Scores count; wides go down like a lead balloon. Despite all the controversies about goals, Dublin had good cause to be aggrieved; scores count, not wides. That said, the Dubs will be back with a bang in 2027.

OFF DAY

Dylan Geaney starred as Man of the Match versus Tyrone and was toute by some as a certain All-Star. Against the Dubs, he had an off day, but he should have been taken off much earlier. I think the Kerry management do very well, but their changes come too late and are predictable. Paul Murphy and Dylan Casey had their hands full trying to watch Costello and Small, two veterans of Dublin’s great six in a row. Should Kerry have moved earlier to introduce defenders with fresh legs? I think so; a stitch in time policy makes good sense. Think back to Shane Walsh of Galway roasting Tom O’Sullivan, and they could well have won that All-Ireland only for the brilliant accuracy of David Clifford. That said, Geaney is a class forward and will start in the final. One off day does not define his splendid career.

17.07.2026 UNIT

Once again, Kerry did well as a defensive unit. Shane Murphy excelled once again, saving at least two certain goals. Credit all those block-downs in Dublin's frantic search for a goal. Con was back for the Jacks, but the athletic Jason Foley ensured that Dublin’s classiest player was well contained. Kerry faced huge men in the midfield sector and used Kilkenny to mop up the breaks. He did well but wasn’t going to score. Since that game, Kilkenny has retired, a splendid player for the Dubs with a bagful of All-Ireland medals and well deserving of his retirement. Maith thú, Kilkenny. Mark O’Shea was his usual consistent self, but Seán O’Brien had better days, even if he scored that controversial goal. That said, he will be back to top form to join O’Shea i lár na páirce in the final. They need a Paul Galvin type of player to hoover up all those spilt balls, and there were many that Kerry did not snatch. Kerry should be worried about all the turnovers. Too many, but plenty to work on over the next 10 days. Good to see Seánie O’Shea back, and that will help him a lot after so many months out injured. There’s a dilemma to pick the starting fifteen for the final, thank God. Only 15 can start. Who will be dropped, with so many great choices on the bench, including All-Stars? Spoilt for choice. Much done; more to do. Kerry are improving all the time and are still winning. All they need to do is peak for the final, and fair dues to the Kerry management, they have done a great job rehabilitating so many players in a season of injury after injury. Bring on Mayo.

17.07.2026 It’s Kerry v Dublin again tomorrow at 5.15 pm when the LGFA All-Ireland semi-final takes place in Thurles. Who better to interview before that big fixture than the Kingdom’s Captain Fantastic. Síofra O’Shea? First up, Síofra, your take on the men’s football semi-final on Sunday last? Exciting. A great win for Kerry to get back into the All-Ireland final following on from the 2025 win. Yes, it was close enough, but this Kerry team is improving all the time since the Donegal defeat, with more injured players coming back at the right time. It was a great test. Mayo will be a different kind of test. Your own exam is on Saturday in Thurles. How are you fixed for that big game? It will be a tough game – it always is against Dublin. They suffered relegation in the league, but they now have those experienced players back, and they will be a different team in the championship Yes, they needed two late goals against Cork to set up this game tomorrow? They showed the same competitive spirit in the Leinster final with late goals. That shows their tenacious spirit, and they’ll be up for the match in Thurles. So will we. I was impressed with your displays in Newbridge and then winning that game versus Meath so easily in Tralee. We prepared well with Mark Bourke (Kerry LGFA manager for the past two years). We are gelling well with a good mix of experienced players like Emma

Captain Fantastic ready for Thurles showdown

Eamonn Fitzgerald catches up with Kerry skipper Síofra O’Shea Costello, Aishling O’Connell, Eilís Lynch and Anna Galvin. The young players like Leah McMahon, Éabha Lyne and Mikaela Mulvihill are doing so well getting game time too. You have had an amazing experience with Sneem/Derrynane as the only girl on the boys’ team, simply because there was no girls’ team. You won a few county titles. I have fond memories of playing with Sneem/Derrynane up to U12 – some of the best days we had playing football when we were younger. I joined Southern Gaels as a nine-year-old and played all the way up in the different age groups, which led to captaining Kerry U14 and losing the U16 All-Ireland final to Galway. That must have been tough when you scored 3-6 in the final and Kerry still lost. You lose some and win more; that’s the nature of competitive games.

I have marvelled at your brilliant performances both in football and in basketball. Jack has brought Star Donaghy on board after his sojourn in Armagh, and that trend goes as far back as Jayo with The Dubs and James Weldon of Fossa in charge of the Irish women’s team, who was also engaged with Dingle to win their All-Ireland Club title. Does basketball help with football? It certainly does. There are so many skills transferred across from basketball such as spatial awareness, hand-eye coordination, backdoor cuts and reading the game. You decide where to go and when to go for the ball that will be coming in. You get different kinds of balls in from different style players. There are great players who played the two sports, like Lorraine Scanlon, Emma Costello, Niamh Ní Chonchúir and Leah McMahon, to name a few. I was playing basketball from the age of five and we learned a lot. I started with

Kenmare Kestrels and was blessed with great coaches starting there with a great coach, Andrew Fitzgerald and John Adams, then Cahersiveen, with John Teahan and Paudie O’Shea, and Liam Culloty in Castleisland, who had experience with the Irish teams. Then, in the past few years, James Fleming coached us in Utility Trust St Paul’s, Killarney. Maurice Fitzgerald, your former principal in Coláiste na Sceilge, is fondly remembered for his brilliance as a Kerry player, particularly his last-minute sideline free from an impossible angle in the 2001 All quarter-final at Semple Stadium. His extraordinary late equalising point – a curling outside of the boot free from the right sideline – is now one of the most iconic scores in Gaelic football history. You were only one year old then, but I’m sure you heard all about it in Iveragh. Best of luck in Thurles. Thanks Eamonn. We will hear more from Síofra in next week’s edition, finding out about the two ACL setbacks, how she overcame them, and was cited as a ‘medical wonder’ coming back to play after surgery. That and more… ROLE MODEL: Síofra O’Shea of Kerry poses for a picture with supporters after the All-Ireland quarter-final. Photo: Michael P Ryan/Sportsfile.

Leahy and O’Connor Lakers confirm set new PBs in London new 6’9” signing Flying Killarney Valley AC sprinters Sarah Leahy and Keelie O'Connor had great success last weekend in London as both athletes set new personal bests in the top-class event.

Sarah Leahy lowered her PB to 11.50 secs for the 100m. She had the privilege of an extra 100m and in this case ran 11.34 secs but unfortunately it was outside the permitted following wind. However, in all conditions this is Sarah's fastest 100m ever. By the time going to press Sarah will have raced as a member of the Irish women's national 4x100m relay team on Thursday in Lucerne, Switzerland and she is also out this Saturday in the Diamond League in London. Fellow squad members include Lauren Roy, Lucy Sleeman, Sarah Leahy, Ciara Neville, Precious Akbe Moses and Kate Bergin. All efforts and focus are on qualification for this year's European Track and Field Championships. Fellow club mate Keelie O'Connor raced in London also with Sarah over the 100m

and set a new PB of 12.13 seconds. Lining up alongside the silver 200m European champion from 2024 and bronze champion over 100m from 2022 demonstrates the very high level both athletes are competing at. Middle distance supremo Jack O'Leary also set a new (PB) in the 800m. Jack was competing in the British miler's club Grand Prix in Watford. Jack finished in 5th place in a blanket finish with only 0.3 of a second between 1st and 5th. Jack lowered his PB to 1.50.21 seconds. These Killarney Valley AC athletes amongst others will be taking part in the National Senior Track and Field Championships in the Morton Stadium on the weekend of the 25th and 26th of July. Elsewhere young sprint sensation Gary Arthur won the gold medal at the National Track and Field Championships. The new U12 All-Ireland champion over 60m ran in a blistering 8.69 secs. The very dedicated athlete caps his year off with its biggest prize, being crowned the national champion for 2026. Teammate David Watson is also fast gaining major attention on the national stage with a silver medal in the U18 high jump.

Utility Trust St Paul’s Lakers are delighted to announce the signing of Dante Sofia. Dante, a native of Liverpool, stands at 6’9” and comes to Killarney following a spell at his hometown team, Liverpool Basketball Club. Previous to that he went to College in Oregon with Umpqua before moving onto Multnomah for 2022/23. He then graduated from the Webber International University, making a return to his native Liverpool. Although his size would mark him out as an inside player, he is equally adept at scoring from distance and this versatility will help the team. Following a very successful first season, Coach Luke O’Hea has now got a firm grasp on the team’s and the league’s capabilities and Dante’s arrival will complement the Lakers’ style. A further signing is expected in the near future. The Club is also delighted to have James Fleming and Utility Trust on board again as sponsor for a second season. Without that support it would be impossible to compete in the league and a big thank you is extended to James for his generous sponsorship.

INCOMING: New St Paul's Lakers player Dante Sofia.

Meanwhile next season’s fixtures have been confirmed with the league once again made up of two seven-team conferences. The Southern Conference is made up of the three Galway Clubs (Titans, Maree and Moycullen), Tipp Talons, Portlaoise Panthers, KYCMS Killorglin and the Lakers. A noticeable absentee is Killarney Cougars who have withdrawn from the league so the big Derby this season is undoubtedly with fellow Kerry club Killorglin. Those epic games take place on October 18 and March 6. The Launesiders will be eyeing a quick return to the top table.

Shels the visitors for huge FAI Cup tie | By Luke Mangan This Friday evening, Mounthawk Park in Tralee will host an FAI Cup Round 2 clash between Shelbourne and dark horses Kerry FC. The Kingdom will be looking for another iconic FAI Cup night in Tralee, just like their previous one last September against Sligo Rovers.

PERSONAL BESTS: Keelie O'Connor and Sarah Leahy of Killarney Valley AC.

That was the evening of the famous comeback against a travelling Sligo who were three-nil up at half-time, but a double from Cian Brosnan and a penalty from Joe Adams sent it into extra time. History was made when Daniel Okwute scored The Kingdom's fourth goal in the 118th minute. Going into this week’s tie, Shelbourne are naturally fancied to beat the Boys in Green. However, while Shels are doing very well in the Premier Division, Kerry will put up a fight and won't be knocked easily. Shelbourne's market value is €4.40 million, which proves they have some serious talent including Kerr McInroy and Harry Wood. But even with those incredi-

ble players, Kerry will not to give in easily. The Kingdom go into this game as complete underdogs, but they hold home advantage and they will have the whole county supporting them. With this being the first time these sides are meeting, Colin Healy cannot really balance the opposition against his team, but he will be ready for the challenge nonetheless.

Killarney Legion GAA LOTTO: 9, 13, 22, 26. Bonus 3. Match 3s - Catherine Doyle, Raymond Furlong, Trevor Farry. LADIES SENIOR: The saying “Goals win games” rang true on Monday night in Johnny Culloty Park with Abbeydorney winning the Co League D2 shield final against a spirited Legion Ladies side. On a hot evening with water breaks, the visitors stormed into a 3-01 to 0-05 lead at the end of Q1. The lead was reduced to 4 pts by half time with both sides finding the net, Ciara Randles slotting home neatly for Legion. The visitors landed a sucker blow when they added their 5th goal at the start of the 2nd half to pull 7 clear. But this seemed to inspire our ladies who roared back into the game by the end of the third quarter. With 7 minutes to go legion found the net through the trusty left boot of Laura Healy and drew level. It looked like we were set for a grandstand finish at this point but to the visitors credit, it was them who dug deepest to etch out the win by adding 3 further points before a breach saw them land a 21m free to leave the final score Legion 2-13 Abbeydorney 5-08. Team B Corridan, S Costello, M Healy, A Fitzgerald, Z Shine, E Coffey, C O’Connor, K McCarthy, I Corridan, E Brosnan, A Murphy 0-04, A Devlin, L Healy 1-06, E Coffey, C Randles 1-03. Subs: E O’Shea, K Fleming, A Bowler, A Cahill, E Cronin, A Healy, L Horgan, C O’Grady, M O’Donoghue MINOR BOYS: Minor county league. Division 1B Round 3. Legion 2-18 Churchill 1-08. Our minor boys welcomed Austin Stacks to Johhny Culloty park for round 3 and their final group game of their county league campaign. On a very warm evening for football Austin Stacks scored a goal straight from the throw in. From there on we took control and worked some nice scores to give us a lead of 2-10 to 1-03 at 1/2 time. The second half continued the same way, and we

ran out comfortable winners. We are at away next week against Listry in a county league division 1 semi-final. Thanks to Austin Stacks for the game and to Brendan Brosnan for reffing. U16 BOYS: U16 County League Div 9 Rd 4 - Killarney Legion B 8-10 Milltown Castlemaine B 4-8. Our U16B Team hosted Milltown Castlemaine in Round 4 of the County League. A good start saw us surge ahead early on, but Milltown Castlemaine worked some nice scores to narrow the gap at half time. The teams traded scores throughout the second half. A few goals near the end saw us prevail in a contest that was more even than the final scoreline indicates. Well done to the boys on a good win and thanks to Milltown Castlemaine for a fine sporting contest U16 BOYS: U16 County League Div 1A Rd 3. Killarney Legion 3-19 Glenbeigh Glencar Cromane 0-12. GGC were the visitors to Johnny Culloty Park in Rd 3 of the County League. After a draw with Kilcummin and a win against Austin Stacks in the previous rounds, the boys were determined to put in a strong performance and started very well. A great goal and a brilliant penalty save by Ethan Clarke were highlights of the first half. We led at half time by 1-12 to 0-5. The team kept up the work rate in the second half and continued to pick off some great scores and ran out convincing winners. Thanks to GGC for a great contest and to Brendan Brosnan for officiating. U12 BOYS: Our U12 boys made the short trip to Kilcummin for Round 2 of the East Kerry League, with two excellent games played in beautiful sunshine. Our older team came away with a hard-earned win after a very competitive contest, while our younger lads put in a fantastic performance but were edged out by a few goals. The effort, determination and skill on show from all the boys was first class. It’s great to see the progress the boys are making every week, with the hard work and commitment at training really beginning to show on the pitch. A huge thank you to the five U10 players who stepped up to help out with the younger team this evening. Their attitude and willingness to contribute was fantastic. Finally, thanks to Kilcummin for their hospitality and for two sporting, competitive games. U14 BOYS: U14 County Championship Shield Final. Castleisland District 4-14 East Kerry 3-13. Back in ASP, East Kerry fell just short in a closely contested County Championship Shield final, losing to Castleisland District on a scoreline of 4-14 to 3-13. Legion were well represented throughout the campaign, with six players involved. Fionn Culloty, Fionn Spellman, Caelan Prendergast, Chris Scannell and Conor Randles all started the final, while Rory Moynihan, who missed the game due to holidays, was a regular starter throughout the campaign. Despite the disappointment of the result, all involved can be very proud of

their efforts. Attention for those players return to the club as we now turn to the East Kerry League, which gets underway next week. SUMMER CAMP: The summer camp is back again this year commencing Tuesday 4th August until Friday 7th August 10am to 1pm for boys and girls aged 4-13. You can register at Legiongaa.com.

Spa GAA SPA LADIES: Spa Senior Ladies were crowned Donal Curtin Cup Division 2 Champions following a thrilling 1-14 to 1-13 victory over Laune Rangers in front of a large crowd in Spa on Monday evening. In a superb contest played in challenging heat, both sides served up a fantastic spectacle for the supporters, with the teams level at half-time before Spa found another gear to open up a fivepoint lead late in the second half. Laune Rangers showed great spirit to score a late goal and point, setting up a tense finish, but Spa defended with tremendous grit and determination to see the game out. Liadh Tobin was deservedly named Player of the Match after an outstanding all-round display, while every member of the Spa panel played their part in a memorable team performance. Captain Saoirse Kelly proudly accepted the Donal Curtin Cup to the delight of the vocal Spa support. Congratulations to the players and management on a fantastic and well-deserved success. MUNSTER LGFA CLUB FESTIVAL: Our Spa U8 and U10 girls enjoyed a fantastic day at the Munster LGFA Club Festival hosted by St Colum's in Co. Cork on Saturday. Both teams played a series of matches against St Colum's, Bantry, Clann na nGael, O'Donovan Rossa, Castlehaven and Muintir Bháire, with the girls displaying great skill, teamwork and determination throughout the day. Most importantly, they had plenty of fun while proudly representing Spa in the sunshine. A sincere thank you to St Colum's and Munster LGFA for organising such a well-run and enjoyable festival. SPA ACADEMY: Spa GAA will host its Annual Academy Ice Cream Fun Morning on Saturday, July 18th, with all Academy players treated to an ice cream after their session and refreshments available for parents. All club members, Academy families and anyone interested in joining Spa GAA are warmly invited to come along, enjoy the morning and experience the great community atmosphere in the club. GIRL’S U16 LEAGUE FINAL: Spa Girl’s U16s will play in the long-awaited East Kerry League Final on Sunday 26th July at 7pm, playing away to Firies. We wish them all the bets in the final and encourage our club members to go along and

support the girls. CIARA O’SULLIVAN: Everyone at the club would like to congratulate our own Ciara O’Sullivan, who lined out at midfield for the Kerry minors last week, helping her side to a fantastic victory over Laois and securing their place in the All-Ireland B Final. Kilcummin GAA MINOR DIVISION 2A RD 3: Kilcummin made the trip to Ballyduff last Monday evening for Round 3 of the Keane’s SuperValu County League and delivered an impressive performance to secure a well-deserved victory. Playing against a strong wind in the first half, Kilcummin showed great resilience and quality throughout. Excellent scores from Daragh Keane, Conor O’Leary, Jack

17.07.2026 SPORT NOTES Ahern, and Mark Fleming kept them firmly in contention, with the halftime score reading Ballyduff 2-5 to Kilcummin’s 0-8. Rory O’Connor was introduced at the start of the second half and made an immediate impact, setting up Conor O’Leary for a superb point. O’Connor then made his mark on the scoreboard himself, finishing a well-taken goal shortly afterwards. Kilcummin continued to build momentum, with further points from Daragh Keane helping to seal a strong and deserved win after a determined team performance. Final score Kilcummin 1.16 Ballyduff 3.9. LOTTO: There was no winner of our lotto on Monday 13th July 2026 for the Jackpot of €9,250. Numbers drawn were 10, 12, 13, 15. Consolation prizes of €50 Brian Cahill, Noreen Scanlon, Gary O’Leary, Niamh Dwyer. Our next draw will be on Monday 28th July for Jackpot of €9,500 Thank you for your continued support. LGFA: On Monday evening Kilcummin's senior ladies took to their home pitch in the final of the Division 3 Donal Curtin Shield against Firies. It was a very good and entertaining game with each team dominating the other at various times of the game in a very evenly matched contest. Killarney Valley AC NATIONALS: Killarney Valley athletes earned two National Championship medals at last weekend’s National Juvenile Championships in Tullamore. High Jumper David Watson claimed a superb silver medal in the U18 High Jump with a Personal Best jump of 1.90m. David performed flawlessly clearing every height on his first attempt displaying great composure and consistency. Gary Arthur won gold in the u12 60m sprint in a winning time of 8.60s beating out strong competition. We had many other athletes competing on the day with strong performances and personal bests achieved. To qualify to compete at the National finals is an achievement in itself and valuable experience has been gained for competitors here for the first time. As always great credit must go to the athletes, their coaches and the support provided by parents and families which allows them to compete at these events. INTERNATIONAL COMPETITIONS: Some of our athletes got to compete this week at international competitions. Jack O’Leary competed at the British Milers Club Meet in Watford where he ran a new Personal Best in the 800m with a time of 1.50.21. Sarah Leahy and Keelie O’Connor both took part in the Stratford Speed Grand Prix in London where both ran Personal Best times for the 100m with Sarah running 11.50s and Keelie running 12.13s. Keelie also competed in the 200m where she ran 25.55s. Congratulation to our athletes making their mark on the international stage. Killarney Rugby SUMMER TEST SERIES: Following the massive crowd for the opening test

match brunch, Killarney RFC is thrilled to announce our next big international watch party event. We are returning to our premier partner venue, The Danny Mann Pub (located in the Eviston House Hotel, New Street), to shout on Ireland as they take on the All Blacks in New Zealand! Teams: New Zealand v Ireland. Date: This Saturday, July 18th. Timing: Doors open at 8:00 AM sharp, with kickoff strictly at 8:10 AM. Match Breakfast Special: Tickets are €20 and include a full, traditional Irish breakfast plate. Important Dining Note: In a change to our previous setups, the match breakfast will be served during the second half (approximately 9:00 AM). This allows all supporters to lock into what promises to be an intense opening 40 minutes completely uninterrupted, before refuelling as the second-half tension builds! Come down, wear your green, and join your fellow club mates for an unmatched atmosphere. ICE CREAM AND SMILES: Last Wednesday night, the pitches at Aghadoe played host to the grand finale of our incredibly successful 8-week Give It A Try girls' rugby initiative. We wrapped up a phenomenal two months of skill-building, teamwork, and growth by treating our hard-working players to a surprise visitor—Pat’s Ice Cream Van rolled right up to the training grounds to cap off the evening! This year’s program blew all previous expectations out of the water, concluding with a fantastic 49 registered players. Watching the girls develop their confidence, master the basic skills, and build lasting friendships on the turf week after week has been an absolute highlight of our summer season. The incredible skill and enthusiasm on display prove that the future of girls’ and women’s rugby at Aghadoe is exceptionally bright. VOLUNTEERS: An intensive, high-energy 8-week program doesn’t just happen on its own; it relies entirely on dedicated volunteers willing to give up their evenings. The club extends a massive thank you to our superb coaching team: Liam, Becca, Donncha, Adrian, Aaron, and Kevin. Thank you for looking after the squads so well, keeping every single drill engaging, and creating an inclusive environment where every girl could thrive. Enjoy a well-deserved summer break! Parents and players are advised to keep a close eye on our website, ClubZap, and social channels over the coming weeks for upcoming autumn registration details and training schedules for the minis and youth categories. NEW PLAYERS ALWAYS WELCOME: As we look ahead to the 2026/2027 season, Killarney RFC is always recruiting new talent across all age grades - from our minis and thriving U14 Girls squads right up to the Senior Men's teams. No prior rugby experience is necessary to get involved. We pride ourselves on offering a fun, safe, and highly inclusive environment to

learn the game and make friends for life. If you or your children are interested in joining the Black and Red Army, simply drop us a message on Facebook, Instagram, or check out our contact details on the official club website.

Killarney Swimming Club CONGRATULATIONS to five members of Killarney Swimming Club who proudly represented the club at the Irish Summer National Age Group Championships last week. Aoibhín Heinemann secured an excellent 12th place in the 100m Backstroke and 16th in the 200m Backstroke. The team was supported throughout the championships by Head Coach Sean Farndon and Coach Elaine O’Donoghue, whose guidance and encouragement helped the swimmers perform at their best across the four days of competition. Qualifying for the Irish Summer National Age Group Championships is a significant achievement in itself and reflects the dedication, commitment and hard work of the swimmers throughout the season. The following day Mike and Harold were playing with the 2 English women who won the ladies doubles. Both partnerships managed to avoid each other until the final. After a close match Mike ended up getting silver (playing with Jane Portnell). Maybe the fact that both of his partners were pickleball coaches might have helped winning both medals! Mike has now won medals in all 4 inter provincial tournaments, the Irish Nationals and finally the Irish Open.
