Ewan's mother issues powerful plea to look out for young people

The mother of a young Killarney man who died by suicide last month has issued a powerful, heartfelt plea to the local community to look after one another and cut young people more slack as they navigate life.

The sudden and unexpected passing of Ewan MacIndoe on May 27, at just 22 years of age, plunged the town into deep sadness.

A gifted all-round athlete, Ewan was a highly popular figure across local sporting fields, representing Killarney Celtic FC, Killarney Legion GAA Club, and Killarney Golf & Fishing Club. He is deeply missed by his heartbroken parents, David and Louise, and his sister, Amber.

To mark the month’s mind of his passing, Louise MacIndoe has given the Killarney Advertiser permission to publish excerpts from the moving eulogy she delivered on the day of his funeral, sharing a vital message regarding how society treats its young population.

'CUT THEM A LITTLE BIT OF SLACK'

In her address, Louise appealed directly to employers, parents, and the wider public to show greater patience, understanding, and positive encouragement to young adults.

"Please, please take care of our young

men and ladies at home and at work," Louise pleaded. "Cut them a little bit of slack. They are young, they are learning, and they will make mistakes. Please don't penalise them so harshly. They will grow, they will learn. They just sometimes need a little bit of time and a lot of positive encouragement."

Reflecting on Ewan’s 22 years, she noted that he packed a lifetime into those years and lived life to the absolute fullest. Despite facing numerous knockbacks, she recalled how resilient he remained, always trying to move forward in the hope that things would improve.

Addressing Ewan’s large circle of friends directly, Louise urged them to remain resilient during their grief.

"To Ewan's friends, please stay strong,"

she said. "Your best years are ahead of you. Even on the darkest days like today, please keep living and loving. Ewan would want you to, and we beg you to, too."

DEFINING TRUE HAPPINESS

Louise also spoke openly about the true meaning of happiness, rejecting mate-

rialistic milestones in favour of personal fulfilment. She said that she and David raised their children to make their own decisions and to stand by them.

"Find your happiness, whatever that might be," Louise urged the congregation. "Happiness comes from you as a person. No one can define it; it's what is you."

July 13 opening date confirmed for new community hospital

The long-awaited transfer of residents to the new 130-bed Killarney Community Nursing Unit is scheduled to commence during the week of Monday, 13 July.

Fianna Fáil TD for Kerry, Michael Cahill, welcomed the update following a Parliamentary Question he submitted to the Minister for Health.

The Health Service Executive (HSE) confirmed that HIQA registration for the new facility was officially granted on Monday, 15 June 2026. Subject to final staff approval, the phased relocation process will

now begin, bringing an end to a lengthy period of uncertainty for local families. The initial phase of the move will involve the transfer of existing dementia residents to the facility. In total, the transition will see the safe relocation of 101 residents and patients from St Columbanus and Killarney Community Hospital. The entire moving process is expected to take approximately five days to complete. To prepare for the transition, open evenings for residents and their families were held this week, allowing families to visit the new building in advance of the official move.

Councillor John O’Donoghue of the Kerry Independent Alliance was elected as the new Cathaoirleach of the Killarney Municipal District on Monday morning.

The election took place during the local authority's annual general meeting at the Council Chamber, marking the transition into the third year of the current council term. Councillor O’Donoghue takes over the chain of office from outgoing Mayor, Councillor Martin Grady. The new Cathaoirleach was proposed for the position by a fellow council member. In his acceptance speech, Councillor O’Donoghue stated: "Most sincere thanks to Cllr Brendan Cronin for nominating me, and to Cllr Niall O Callaghan for seconding his nomination." He said that as someone born and raised in the area, it is a privilege to be entrusted with the role

During his address, Councillor O’Donoghue acknowledged his colleagues and supporters in the Kerry Independent Alliance, paying tribute to figures within the party who passed away recently.

"We have lost some party stalwarts in the past year and two that particularly come to mind are Donie Doody and Andrew O Sullivan who were founding members of our party and I know they are very proud looking down today. I hope that seeing me in this chair today might be some small compensation for all the miles travelled canvassing!"

He also praised his director of elections, Sean Kavanagh, for his forensic approach to politics, and paid tribute to Michael Gleeson, whose former seat he holds on Kerry County Council. He credited his uncle with paving his way into public life through an example of service defined by hard work, independence of thought, and community commitment.

HOUSING

Looking ahead to his term, the newly elected Mayor said the necessity of planning for the long-term future of the municipal district rather than merely responding to immediate issues. While the region is highly successful and scenic, that success brings structural challenges that must be addressed to protect local families.

"Housing remains one of the greatest issues facing our communities. Too many

Cllr John O’Donoghue elected Mayor of Killarney

young people and working families are struggling to find affordable homes in the places where they grew up. We must continue to work together to ensure that our communities remain places where people can live, work and raise their families."

The Cathaoirleach also raised concerns regarding urban transport, infrastructure, and the preservation of the unique aesthetic character of the area's main streets. He argued that development must enhance rather than dilute local identity, warning against a future where the main street resembles any generic city.

RURAL COMMUNITIES

A central theme of the address was the balanced distribution of local authority resources and planning permissions across the entire municipal district.

Councillor O’Donoghue insisted that smaller towns and villages must not be overshadowed by urban development.

"While Killarney town is the economic engine of our district, and indeed perhaps our county, we must never lose sight of the importance of our smaller towns and villages. Communities such as Glenflesk, Barraduff, Rathmore, Fossa, Faha and Kilcummin to name but a few, each have their own identity, strengths and potential. A thriving Municipal District depends on all of our communities succeeding."

He added that strong rural communities form the backbone of the county, and preserving local schools, GAA clubs, community halls, and agricultural practices requires making it viable for the younger generation to remain living in their home areas.

FIVE-POINT PLAN

Councillor John O’Donoghue outlined five priority areas to govern decisions and policy direction during his term as Cathaoirleach:

• Traffic Management: Councillors must work together to address severe town congestion. While the bypass remains a long-term goal, it is not an immediate solution. The plan proposes trialling practical measures, including park-and-ride facilities alongside a town bike-sharing scheme allowing drivers to park outside the centre and cycle in.

• Affordable Housing: Following a prolonged period of focus on social housing, affordable housing for firsttime buyers must become a priority. Working households are currently being priced out of the local property market, creating a flawed system where working people feel they must qualify for social housing lists to secure a home.

• Future Vision for the Town: The council needs a long-term plan to govern what businesses occupy local streets. Preserving traditional character is essential to attract locally owned businesses and prevent the streets from being dominated solely by corporate franchises and numerous vape shops.

• Balanced Regional Development: Resources must be shared fairly across all surrounding towns, villages, and settlements, including Fossa, Kilcummin, Glenflesk, Barraduff, Rathmore, Muckross, and Faha, to ensure they develop in tandem with the main town area.

• Rural Planning and Agriculture: Preserving rural communities requires a balanced approach to the planning system. Since farming sustains local schools, sports clubs, churches, and community groups, individuals wishing to build homes on family land must be permitted to do so to maintain rural life.

Construction begins on extension at St Oliver’s School

Construction commenced earlier this month on a 10-classroom extension at St Oliver’s National School, with completion scheduled for early 2028.

The development will provide three mainstream classrooms, three Special Educational Needs (SEN) rooms, and

four Special Education Teacher (SET) rooms. The expansion creates capacity for 42 additional student places, helping to meet the growing demand for regional specialist supports.

Principal Colm Ó Súilleabháin said: "We are extremely grateful for the Minister’s continued support in progressing this

project over a number of years. I would also like to acknowledge the work of past principals and Boards of Management whose vision and determination made this possible. This extension will be transformative for our school community, enhancing how we support all of our pupils and allowing us to build on our strong

tradition of inclusive education."

The investment is part of a national Department of Education programme to expand special educational capacity. Minister Norma Foley welcomed the project as a major step forward for local special education after seeing the site firsthand during a recent visit.

T OWN TALK

New drama brings Irish ‘Downton Abbey’ vibe to Killarney House

A new theatrical production charting the dramatic history of the Bourn Vincent family is set to be a major highlight of the upcoming Summer in Killarney Festival.

Commissioned by the Killarney Chamber of Tourism & Commerce, the play is written and directed by local creative Noel O'Sullivan. The production offers a romantic and historical look at the family that gifted the iconic Muckross House to the Irish state, exploring how the estate moved from private ownership to become Ireland's first National Park. The drama follows the love story of an American millionaire’s daughter and a barrister from the Irish gentry class. The narrative is set against the volatile political backdrop of the early 1900s, spanning the Easter Rising, the War of Independence, and the Civil War. In a style reminiscent of Downton Abbey, the pro-

duction contrasts the lives of the upper class with the local families who worked on the estate.

A multi-talented local cast will bring the history to life through a blend of drama, song, dance, poetry, and comedy. The outdoor performances will take place in the courtyard of Killarney House on Friday, July 17 and Saturday, July 18. Each evening begins with a wine and cheese reception at 7pm, followed by the performance at 8pm. Due to the venue capacity, tickets are strictly limited. Bookings can be made online via the official festival website at www.killarney.ie/summer-in-killarney/.

Black Sheep Coffee Shop announces price drops

The Black Sheep Hostel and Coffee Shop on New Street has announced a double price reduction for its coffee customers, effective from July 1.

The price adjustment comes in response to the newly implemented reduction to a 9% VAT rate for the hospitality sector, alongside a stabilisation in global commodity markets for key ingredients, including coffee and cocoa beans. Global prices for coffee and cacao had risen significantly over recent years due

to geopolitical conflicts, high consumer demand, and severe climate disruptions, including prolonged droughts and wildfires in key growing regions.

With supply chains and market conditions now settling, the New Street business is passing the direct cost savings back to local consumers.

Proprietor Kevin Leahy said: "Prices seem to go up like a rocket and drop back down like a feather. I feel it’s important to give back to customers where possible."

Safety concerns over anti-social driving at Muckross House grounds

Growing safety anxieties have been raised within the local community following ongoing reports of anti-social driving and 'boy racer' activity on the grounds of Muckross House.

The area within Killarney National Park, has been subject to recurring incidents of dangerous driving and high-revving engines.

The disruptive behaviour has caused

serious concern for both local residents and tourists visiting the popular national park landmark.

The Killarney Advertiser understands that Gardaí attended the scene on a previous night, following reports of the activity. However, local sources indicate that the anti-social driving arose again the following evening.

The Killarney Advertiser contacted the Garda Press Office for a comment before going to print.

The parish of Kilcummin marked a milestone on June 21 when Bishop Ray Browne celebrated a special Golden Jubilee Mass to honour the 50th anniversary of Our Lady of Lourdes Church.

Bishop Ray welcomed several concelebrants who have ministered in the parish over the past five decades, including Fr Kieran O'Brien, Fr Joe Begley, Fr Larry Kelly, Fr Tom Looney, Fr Jim Lenihan, and Deacon Thady O'Connor.

During the ceremony, Bishop Ray highlighted the remarkable community spirit alive in Kilcummin.

He noted that over its 50-year history, the church has hosted 1,920 baptisms, 520 weddings, and 850 funerals.

The celebration also welcomed back individuals who shared historical ties to

the church's earliest days. In attendance were Marian Keane and Timmy O'Keeffe of Gneeveguilla, who celebrated the very first wedding in the church.

Local schoolchildren publish parish book

A key highlight of the Golden Jubilee celebrations was the launch of a 19-page colour information booklet acting as a guide to the church, its grounds, the grotto, Mass Rock, and parish cemeteries.

The booklet was entirely researched and written by the sixth-class pupils of the three local parish national schools: Anabla, Coolick, and Kilcummin.

Fr Kieran O'Brien praised the efforts of

the mostly 13-year-old students, calling the publication a remarkable and valuable legacy as they finish primary school and prepare for post-primary education this coming September.

The Parish Council extended their gratitude to Éamonn Fitzgerald for overseeing the project and getting it into print, as well as Community Employment workers Helen, Margaret, Iryna, and Maura for printing and compiling the final booklets.

259-unit housing development planned for Countess Rd

A planning application has been submitted to Kerry County Council for a large-scale residential development on Countess Road.

Dipharma Unlimited Company is seeking a 10-year planning permission for the Large-Scale Residential Development (LRD) located at the site in the townland of Dromhale. The application was officially received by the local authority during the June 8 to June 14 planning period.

The proposed project consists of 259 residential units, a single-storey crèche, landscaping, and all associated site development works. To facilitate the build, the plans outline the demolition of two existing two-storey semi-detached houses, a ruinous structure, and the existing site boundary walls along Coun-

tess Road.

The housing breakdown features 103 two-storey, three-bedroom houses, which comprise 27 terraced units, 62 end-of-terrace units, and 14 side-entry units. There are also 82 courtyard apartment units built over two storeys, consisting of 42 one-bedroom units and

40 two-bedroom units. Additionally, the plans include 74 apartment units, made up of 34 one-bedroom units and 40 two-bedroom units, housed inside two blocks that are part three-storey and part four-storey high.

Vehicular access to the new estate will be provided via a single entrance from

Countess Road to the north. The entrance design incorporates public road improvement works, including a raised crossing point. Pedestrian and cycle infrastructure will also be constructed to connect Countess Road internally with the development and the adjoining areas.

Ancillary site works detailed in the application include car parking, bicycle parking, bin storage facilities, two ESB substations, and water services. The drainage infrastructure involves foul and storm network upgrades in Countess Grove. A Natura Impact Statement has been prepared and submitted to the planning authority alongside the application. Further details on the project can be accessed on the dedicated LRD website at www.CountessRoadLRD.ie

Killarney urged to become Ireland’s first ‘Lighthouse Town’

Killarney could serve as a national model for sustainability by becoming Ireland’s first "lighthouse town".

That was the message delivered by former European Commission director Marie Donnelly at a Killarney Chamber of Tourism & Commerce luncheon at the Gleneagle Hotel.

Addressing the audience on energy efficiency, Donnelly highlighted Ireland's heavy exposure to energy security risks, noting that the country imports 80% of its energy. However, she emphasized that local businesses have significant opportunities to utilise solar power,

smart meters, and available SEAI grants to mitigate these risks.

Donnelly praised Killarney’s current progress, stating the town is already well ahead of the curve. Pointing to its status as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, she urged the community to collectively pursue "lighthouse" status—signifying a full, community-wide model of sustainability rather than a small-scale pilot.

Before the address, Chamber President Johnny McGuire welcomed members and paid tribute to the late John O’Mahony, acknowledging his lifetime of public service and his immeasurable contributions to promoting Killarney and County Kerry over many decades.

FELICITY’S SUMMER IN KILLARNEY

A new weekly series from Killarney Advertiser's Jess Jukes

WEEK TWO

Jess Jukes, a member of the advertising department at the Killarney Advertiser, is also a budding writer. Each week, we will bring you her serialized novella following the adventures of Felicity’s summer in Killarney.

Luckily, the ice cream vendor on the ground wasn’t too badly injured. He was a young man, with ginger hair and a smattering of freckles. He introduced himself as Jack. The ice cream truck was his father’s. Felicity watched as Auntie Sheila helped him inside the house, dressing his scrapes questioning him about the hijacking. The airy woman was soft with her questioning, but the amount of information she got out of Jack in such a short period shone some light on how she had made it as a detective.

Jack told them about the figure, a woman, dressed head to toe in black despite the evening sun. She had yanked open his door just as he had stopped and thrown him to the ground. There had been no warning. He had only heard her say “Finally!” before she had climbed in the truck and drove away.

Jack’s father Trevor had injured his back a few weeks earlier while lifting a heavy box of sprinkles and Jack had been flying solo in the truck since. “If I can’t get the truck back, I don’t know what I’ll do,” he lamented. “That ice cream truck is my Da’s life and soul.”

Her mind was made up. Felicity snuck out of the kitchen and outside. She stood where Jack’s truck had been stolen. A glint of metal caught her eye. In the middle of the road she found a heavy white pen. Embossed across the length of it in bold blue letters was ‘Rosie Curran, DIY’. She had no idea how they had missed it before. Felicity felt eyes burning into her back and turned to see Mrs Flaherty peeking through the curtains of number 15 next door. The woman ducked out of view and not two moments later number 15’s door opened and Mrs Flaherty poked her head out.

Mrs Flaherty was the sort of neighbour who constantly tutted about the state of Auntie Sheila’s garden. It was a gorgeous plot, but it was ‘too wild and untamed’ for their neighbour’s liking. She always complained that the height of her aunt’s flowers were blocking the sun from getting to her prize tulips. This of course had only become an issue when Auntie Sheila had won the prize for best Christmas-themed garden last December.

“What’s that you’ve found Felicity? Is it belonging to Jack?”

She walked over and showed the woman the pen, and Mrs Flaherty hummed. “Ah, Rosie Curran. She works down in Killarney Hardware, you know. The one down on College Street.”

Eager to follow the trail, Felicity bid Mrs Flaherty farewell and started towards College Street.

The light had slowly started to fade by the time Felicity passed the Outlet Centre. She approached the door to Killarney Hardware cautiously. “Hello?” She shouted as she walked inside. It took her eyes a

moment to adjust, but when they did she saw a woman in her mid-thirties bustle toward her from between the aisles of tall shelves.

“Good evening! What can I do for you?” The woman was in dungarees with a scarf wrapped around her head. She made her way behind the counter. Felicity spotted a small pot of pens resting there, one of which was twin to the one in her hand. She held up the pen.

“I found this on my way home, and wanted to return it.” Rosie took the pen. “Oh thank you, I’ve been looking everywhere for this. I’m surprised it was out of the shop though.”

“It was in Hedgerow, down past Woodlawn.”

Rosie’s eyebrows furrowed. “Now that is odd .. I suppose I did have one odd customer a few days ago. She asked to borrow a pen when we were looking at paints. She was planning on renovating a truck into a campervan, you see. Very enthusiastic about it.” Rosie grinned. “It’s not like I don’t appreciate enthusiasm for these things, but it was almost obsessive, how she was talking about it. Just struck me as strange. Maybe in her frenzy she forgot to leave my pen here.”

“Oh wow .. I wonder where she’s getting her van from.”

“I was trying to ask her, in order to figure out the size and how much paint she would need. She only said that it was about the size of an ambulance! No make or model or anything.” Rosie shook her head. “Anyway, thank you for returning my pen.”

“Happy to help,” Felicity said. She lingered before the door. “I don’t suppose you know where she’s from? I know a lady doing a van conversion, maybe it’s the same one.”

Rosie rummaged around for a moment before finding a piece of paper. “She ordered eight tins of paint to a house up in Tiernaboul for tomorrow.”

“Oh, no it must be someone else then.” Felicity thanked the woman before bidding her goodbye and leaving the shop behind. A van the size of an ambulance .. or an ice cream truck? Felicity pondered the information all the way back to her aunt’s house.

When she got in Jack was gone, sent home by her Auntie Sheila. Her aunt made them both tea and they sat at the paint-stained kitchen table. Auntie Sheila’s black cat Socks, named for his white paws, padded around their legs before settling in Felicity’s lap. She told her aunt about where she had gone, but kept the information about the campervan woman to herself. Tomorrow she would ask Jack if he wanted to venture up to Tiernaboul with her.

• Tune in next week to see what happened next

Each month , the schools transition year students will spotlight alumni who have carried the school’s values beyond its walls, leading, innovating, and serving in diverse fields locally and around the world.

Name: David Clifford Occupation: Teacher, St Brendan’s College Killarney

Year of Graduation: 2016

What would be your most memorable moment of St Brendan’s College?

Winning the Hogan Cup in Croke Park. I also remember 2014, the Kerry team brought the Sam Maguire to the school. Where there any teachers/coaches who influenced your schooling in St Brendan’s?

Mr Rudden, the current vice-principal, he was my year ahead all the way up. The year I started school. It was Mr Seán Coffey’s first year in the school. I suppose they were the two that were with us all the way up. Mr Hugh Rudden would have been involved in the football teams of us as well.

How has school changed from when you were here?

It is a lot calmer now. We had to sign in before school in the GP area. We had to swipe in while I was at school There were lines there at 9, 11, and at lunchtime. Students had their own student number. You had to type that in and that signified that you were back in school. There is more of a variety of extra- curricular activities too, when I was in school there was a lot of sports and the choir was there. There weren’t half the activities or opportunities available in comparison to today. You can now represent the school in any interest that you have.

Are you still in contact with your classmates from St Brendan’s College?

I have a friend group of about 10 or 11 and we would be in touch every day. It is 10 years now since I left school but we have stayed in very close contact. It is great.

How did it feel returning to the school as a teacher?

It was probably a bit strange at the start.

ST BRENDAN’S COLLEGE

I had good relationships with a lot of them, so it wasn’t too bad. I had originally planned to do primary teaching and then I changed my mind to do PE teaching. I was interested in PE, wellness and in health and fitness. In terms of coming back to the Sem, I was here on placement for a year and I loved it here.

What would be your All- Ireland Predictions for 2026?

Hopefully we’ll be involved in the latter stages. We are just trying to take it one game at a time. Hopefully we’ll keep winning and we’ll get back to Croke Park.

Could you describe your training routine in preparation for games? It varies depending on the time of the year. In the wintertime, we would train a bit more and train a bit harder. The closer you get to the Championship games, the training becomes more tactical, and skill based. A lot of the fitness work is done. You are watching your diet all the time really. In the days leading up to the game, then you’re just trying to get as much food and carbs into you as you can, just to have a base. It can be hard enough to eat on the day of a game sometimes, just with nerves. And obviously if we’re playing in Dublin, you’re away from home.

How is your cloths range McKvr going? McKvr came to me with the idea of bringing out a different range of gear.I had put it off for a few years but there was a lot of other knock-off, Clifford

stuff coming out. I just said that I might as well just do it right. They came up with brilliant designs. We are doing a winter range for Christmas and a summer range for a few years. It is flying, thank God. There has been huge interest in it. It’s cool, I suppose. It’s something that you probably see in other sports.

How is your greyhound Solo and Go doing?

He is flying. He will be back from injury hopefully when this is out. He has been brilliant for us. He was second in the Laurels. He won the Kingdom Darby. He just missed out on going to the English Darby this year. Hopefully he will be back involved in the Laurels and a few more big races like that. A group of us just decided to buy the dog as a syndicate. My mother’s from Ballymac, so she would have known the Dowlings. They train the dog.

Did you ever consider emigrating to Australia to play professionally?

I didn’t really. There was a bit of talk in the media about it. I was called in to play with the Kerry Seniors early and that was enough for me. I didn’t really consider it at all after that. I suppose it was not ever really something I thought about when I was growing up. I wanted to play football and play for Kerry so that was enough for me.

Is there a particular county you’re looking forward to meeting?

I suppose we have different rivalries with different teams, Obviously the Cork

games, because you’re so close to home and they are always brilliant. The Dublin games and the Croke Park games are always great. There is a massive atmosphere with the Hill and then obviously the Northern teams. We have had some massive battles with those. Traditionally, Kerry have found it hard against some of those teams. So I wouldn’t pinpoint it to any individual team, but every game brings on different challenges

How do you balance home life and training?

It can be hard. You must have a real set of routines. The most important thing I suppose is to be able to switch off from it and leave it. You don’t want to be bringing it home, let’s say if a training session didn’t go well or a game didn’t go well. You don’t want to be bringing that home or into work. If that’s affecting your mood, I suppose you must be able to try and leave it at training. So that’s probably the hardest thing, because obviously you put so much time into football, that if it’s not going well, it can be frustrating.

What’s your proudest sporting moment?

One that you always come back to is winning the Junior All-Ireland that time with Fossa. Fossa was probably a club that was not around that long compared to the other clubs and just started out down at the lower level. It was only Junior All-Ireland, but to be able to win in Croke Park with all your best friends was a lovely one.

France experienced its hottest day ever, according to the national weather agency. It claims that the country’s national temperature indicator which is an average of day and night across dozens of locations hit 30C on Wednesday, making it the hottest day ever on record. Most of France has been on red alert amid the soaring temperatures. Meanwhile, the UK are also battling the heat. It's been reported that at

Ireland has seen a week of sunshine too, as temperatures reached past 30C yesterday. A Status

Yellow high temperature alert was in place from Tuesday 12pm until this morning at 9am. Met Eireann issued warnings for the hot weather and the potential impacts such as water safety and forest fires.

150,000

roses blooming in Tralee Town Park for summer

A Kerry park famous for its roses is bursting into life with an astonishing 155,000 flowers, almost one for every man, woman and child living in the Kingdom.

The display in Tralee Town Park is the result of months of work by Kerry County Council’s gardening team and is being showcased as part of Your Council Day this Friday, the national campaign highlighting the essential work of Ireland’s county and city councils. A total of 150,000 bulbs were planted last autumn as part of the Council’s ongoing work to enhance public spaces and support biodiversity, with the display now coming into bloom just ahead of the Rose of Tralee festival. They will complement the 5,000 roses that flower annually around festival time, creating a spectacular display in the heart of Tralee. Combined, the 155,000 flowers almost match Kerry’s official population of 156,458. Your Council Day this Friday, co-ordinated by the Local Government Management Agency (LGMA), provides all 31 local authorities with a shared opportunity to increase public awareness of the wide range of services councils deliver, and the people behind them. The public is encouraged to follow the campaign using #YourCouncilDay and #DoLáSaChomhairle.

A new memorial bench has been unveiled along the Fossa Way to honour the local environmentalist who spearheaded the development of the popular walkway.

Positioned on the scenic route between Killarney Golf and Fishing Club and Fossa Cross, the bench overlooks the Lakes of Killarney.

It features a dedicated inscription recognising Michael Doyle, whose original vision and long-term commitment

Memorial bench dedicated to Fossa Way founder Michael Doyle

brought the route to fruition. Mr Doyle, who passed away in June 2024, was the driving force behind the Fossa Historical Society.

He led a dedicated 25-year campaign to see Killarney National Park bounda-

ries extended into Fossa parish, a goal achieved through the creation of the walking and cycling path.

In subsequent years, he remained a familiar figure on the trail, regularly volunteering to collect litter and maintain the

area by hand. Beyond his local work in Fossa, he served as the secretary of the Kerry Way Committee and actively promoted plans for a comprehensive looped trail circling the Lakes of Killarney.

New eco-friendly bus for National Park

A new environmentally friendly bus took to the roads of Killarney National Park this week.

Killarney Executive Tour Co. officially launched its Hop-On Hop-Off Red Bus at Ross Castle on Wednesday.

The vehicle features a modern Euro 6 engine that functions on the same mechanical principles as a conventional diesel power unit.

However, instead of burning traditional petroleum-based diesel, it runs on HVO100 Renewable Diesel.

This fossil-free fuel is made from renewable biological sources like recycled cook-

ing oil and animal fats.

The raw oil undergoes a chemical refinement process that allows it to combust exactly like standard diesel without requiring mechanical modifications to the engine.

The Euro 6 engine uses AdBlue technology to reduce harmful tailpipe emissions by up to 95% compared to standard diesel units.

Furthermore, because HVO fuel is derived from organic matter that absorbed carbon dioxide while growing, it reduces greenhouse gas emissions by up to 90%.

See next week’s Advertiser for a full feature on the new bus

Over 60 classic rally cars in Killarney this Saturday

Over 60 classic rally cars are set to descend on Killarney this Saturday morning for the all-new Killarney Classic Tour 2026.

Spectators can catch an up-close look at these historic machines at the pre-start holding area at Gleneagle Hotel, where the cars will be on display from 9am. Sign-on will take place in the hotel's Chestnut Tree Bar, building an exciting atmosphere before the official departure.

The first car is scheduled to leave the start ramp at 11am.

This non-competitive motoring event celebrates decades of motorsport history across Kerry and the Beara Peninsula. After leaving Killarney, the tour will head south through legendary stages, making a scheduled lunch stop in Castletownbere before looping back.

The day concludes with a celebratory gala dinner back at the Gleneagle

Hotel, where participants will share stories from the golden eras of the Circuit of Ireland, Circuit of Munster, and the early years of the Rally of the Lakes.

RALLY ROYALTY

Leading the spectacular field away from the start ramp this Saturday will be true Irish rallying royalty.

Five-time Irish Tarmac Champion Austin MacHale has been honoured with the number one slot to honour his legendary career.

MacHale’s incredible track record includes six Galway International wins, three Rally of the Lakes titles, two Circuit of Ireland victories, two Donegal Inter-

national wins, two Cork ‘20’ titles, and a West Cork rally win, confirming his status as an all-time great.

Austin will be co-driven by his grandson, Adam Kelly, in the famous family Ford Focus WRC through the iconic local stages.

Adding to the nostalgic variety of the tour, spectators can look forward to a diverse range of historic machinery following MacHale on the road. Among the many standouts bringing a classic blast from the past to the event is AJ Keating from Kanturk – one of MacHale’s contemporary rivlas from the 1980s will be tackling the scenic route in a Mercedes 300 SL.

LOCAL CONTINGENT

A strong contingent of Killarney and District Motor Kerry-based drivers feature on the entry list.

Mark Falvey will drive his Ford Escort Mk1 while Conor Falvey takes to the roads in his classic Porsche 911 SC.

Fellow KDMC clubman Brendan Bro-

snan, will drive an iconic Ford Escort Mk1. Local garage men Brian Glover and John White line up in an Opel Manta 400, while Charlie Hickey and Laura Hickey bring out an Escort RS 1600 Mk1. Johnny O'Sullivan and Karl O'Mahony add further local flavour in a Mazda Rx8 and a Mini Cooper respectively.

Ian O'Connor and Tom O'Sullivan round out the Killarney town entries with powerful machinery.

John Hickey and Michelle Hickey from Headford are out in their Subaru, Jack O'Shea from Glenbeigh in an Austin Mini, and Michael O'Mahoney in a Porsche 911 Targa.

Other locals include Tralee’s Padraig Brick (BMW M3) and Declan Costelloe (Porsche 911), alongside Ballymacelligott's Paul Horan in a Chevette HSR.

FOUR AUDI QUATTROS

Four rare Audi quattros are confirmed for this weekend's tour, bringing the sights and sounds of 1980s Group B rallying back to local roads.

Spectators at the Gleneagle Hotel can view an exceptionally rare long-wheelbase featuring the distinctive yellow and white HB livery.

Local entries include Faha man Mike Buckley and co-driver/wife Mary Buckley in a spectacular Audi Quattro Sport. Another version of the legendary fourwheel-drive machine will be campaigned by the local crew of Ian O'Connor and Kevin Glover. Patrick O'Connell from Charleville completes the Quattro line-up in his classic version of the car.

Wild World Cup Preconceptions

Maybe the Tartan Army, had memories from long ago, Of the movie Casablanca, which was shot in Morocco. Rick’s bar was a smoky den, of dodgy dusky phantoms, And maybe all the boyos, thought three points was no problem. And then when Cameroon, first arrived on the scene, People were intrigued, that they even had a team, But they had Roger Milla, who was a sensation, And established Cameroon, as a real football nation. The North Korean team in ’66, made Brit commentators laugh, For they all had funny names, which sounded rather daft, But they led Portugal 3-0, until the great Eusebio, Scored four goals to save them, from fierce Lisbon woe. When Ireland faced England, in Stuttgart in ’88, Most football TV pundits, thought that we’d be bate, For we were pure rookies, on the European stage, And then when we bate them, the Brit press was amazed! Now most football followers, never heard of Cape Verde, And they were astounded, at their pluck and verve. They faced the might of Spain, with Dub Lopes on board, And they held them scoreless, as all in Crumlin roared!!

HSA targets major outdoor events in summer inspection campaign

The Health and Safety Authority (HSA) has launched a nationwide summer inspection campaign targeting major outdoor events, including concerts and festivals, as activity across the sector increases in the coming weeks.

The HSA is engaging with event organisers to assess safety standards and drive improvements in occupational safety and health compliance. The inspection campaign will reflect the scale and complexity of outdoor event operations, which are typically delivered in temporary and fast-paced environments.

During inspections, HSA inspectors will assess key safety areas, including work

at height, traffic management, electrical safety, contractor supervision and the safe use of work equipment.

Deirdre Sinnott, Senior Inspector with the Health and Safety Authority, said, “This sector presents unique safety challenges due to the temporary nature of work and the high number of workers involved in setting up and taking down events.”

“Our focus is on working with event organisers and contractors to raise awareness of key hazards, help understand the required safety standards and ensure that appropriate controls are in place to prevent injury. Where unsafe work activities are identified, we will take action to ensure workers are protected”, The events industry employs large numbers of contractors and outdoor workers, particularly during the build-up and dismantling phases. These ‘load-in’ and ‘load-out’ activities can involve significant risks, carried out under time pressure in fast moving working environments and often in poor weather conditions.

Insurances.

A further complicating factor is that much of the work can take place adjacent to event attendees and members of the public, increasing the need for robust planning, supervision and risk management.

National Biodiversity Data Centre marks 20th anniversary

Wildlife experts and volunteers from across Ireland gathered in Killarney National Park to record and observe the diverse range of rare flora and fauna thriving in the locality.

The weekend event was hosted by the National Parks & Wildlife Service (NPWS) and supported by the Killarney National Park Education Centre. The gathering served as a vital field study to compile precise ecological data, sup-

porting targeted conservation measures aimed at protecting vulnerable natural habitats.

The tracking initiative coincided with a major milestone for Irish environmental conservation, as the National Biodiversity Data Centre (NBDC) celebrates its 20th anniversary this year. The NBDC remains dedicated to collecting, managing, and reporting accurate information on Ireland's biological diversity to shape future wildlife policies.

Lonely is the home without you Life to us is not the same

The entire world would be like heaven If we could have you back again.

How dearly we loved you And prayed you might live

But Jesus just beckoned And we had to give.

God give us strenght to bear it And courage to fight the blow

What it meant to lose you God alone will ever know.

May the God of love and mercy

Care for our loved one who is gone and bless with consolation Those left to carry on.

From your loving husband Tim, daughter Lisa and son-in-law-Ger.

God saw you getting tired

A cure was not meant to be

So he put his arms around you

And whispered “Come to me”.

A golden heart stopped beating

Hard working hands at rest

God broke our hearts to prove to us

He only takes the best.

We miss you everyday Nana. Love you always, Molly and Abbey. xoxo

KERRY v ULSTER: THE SAGA CONTINUES

Kingdom handed another tough draw against northern rival

ALL-IRELAND FOOTBALL QUARTER-FINAL

Tyrone v Kerry

Saturday 6.30pm Croke Park

Kerry being drawn to face Tyrone in this weekend’s All-Ireland quarter-final means that for the tenth time since 2023, it will be the Kingdom versus Ulster in a must-win knockout championship match.

Saturday’s crucial fixture will be Kerry’s 12th knockout match in four seasons with all but two of them featuring sides from the northern province. In 2023, it was Tyrone followed by Derry followed

by Dublin. In 2024, it was Derry and Armagh. In 2025, it was Cavan, Armagh, Tyrone and Donegal. And this year it has been Armagh and now Tyrone.

The defending champions’ record against Ulster in this period reads P9 W8 L1. They have won the last five such meetings in a row.

Of course, all of that won’t count for much at HQ on Saturday evening as Jack O’Connor’s men come up against this latest iteration of the Red Hand County.

In Darren McCurry, Darragh Canavan and Eoin McElholm they have genuine

attacking threats; Conn Kilpatrick and Brian Kennedy provide significant size around the middle; and half backs Michael McKernan and Kieran McGeary have bags of experience at this level.

Malachy O’Rourke’s boys arrive in the quarters fresh from a two-week break following their narrow one-point victory over Mayo in Round 2A. Goalkeeper Niall Morgan was the hero that day as he converted a late two-point free to secure the victory. They previously defeated Roscommon in Round 1. Kerry, meanwhile, enjoyed a confidence

boosting victory over Armagh last weekend (4-18 to 0-17) and their squad was boosted by the return from injury of goalkeeper Shane Ryan and key forward Seánie O’Shea.

The match will form a double header with Cork versus Mayo, which gets underway at 4pm. Both Saturday quarter-finals will be shown live on GAA+.

The two remaining last eight ties take place on Sunday. Louth v Monaghan begins at 1.45pm, followed by Dublin v Galway at 4pm. Both of these matches are live on RTÉ.

When Kerry’s need is greatest, that’s when Clifford takes control

1-10 (1-8 from play) and 24,000 shrugged. Like Lionel Messi at the World Cup, David Clifford’s brilliance is both incredible and totally normal all at the same time.

This is just what he does. Against Armagh on Saturday he surpassed the legendary Mikey Sheehy as Kerry’s all-time leading scorer across league and championship, and the 27-year-old hopefully has many seasons in green and gold still ahead of him.

Amongst his other talents, he is probably the best player I’ve ever seen in any sport when it comes to instinctively recognising big moments and delivering when it matters most. It’s like he feels it in the air. When Kerry need a score. When the opposition are either vulnerable or have gathered too much momentum. When the fans are gasping for a boost. When a chippy marker needs to be put back in their box. Or when it’s simply time for him to puff out his chest and exert his dominance. That’s when he’s at his explosive best. Like clockwork, he demands the ball, takes control and makes it happen.

His first-half goal and second-half two-pointer in the Park the last day were just the latest in a long list of examples. The Kerry crowd get a rush of excitement whenever he’s in possession, which obviously happens with other great players too, but it’s actually gone beyond that. Now, when he drifts out to the right sideline and a teammate carries the ball in his direction, you can hear and feel the buzz around the ground –before he even touches the ball. We all know what happens next (his marker included) but like that breathtaking view of the mountains from the O’Connor Terrace, it never gets old.

Clifford wasn’t the only Kerry player who stepped up in crunch time. The reigning champions were in real danger of exiting the race for Sam Maguire unthinkably early when they hosted a highly rated Armagh side in Killarney, but they ran out comfortable 13-point winners. It was another example of this team meeting the big occasion with intensity, professionalism and maturity – albeit against an Armagh outfit who fell well short of their incisive best on the day.

Paul Geaney’s buzzer-beating goal at the end of the first half was huge for the hosts. With time running out and with roaming goalkeeper Ethan Rafferty miles from home, Jason Foley forced a turnover and pumped it long. The ball broke into the arms of the veteran

Geaney and, sensing that the clock was against him, he took the shot on from just inside the 45-metre line. It was like watching the stone glide towards the target in curling – all it was missing was a teammate brushing the surface to correct its course.

It eventually did roll into the net and you could tell from the reaction of the players that it was a crucial goal. The first half was a dull affair as Armagh dominated possession and Kerry sat back in defence. At just three points up and as the home team, you wondered were Kerry being too passive in defence, or were Armagh being too passive in attack. Geaney’s goal made it a six-point game and it felt like that margin justified Kerry’s approach, and made Armagh’s look a little foolish.

The second half was a different story entirely. Kerry were the better team by far and they were good value for their emphatic win.

I was very impressed by Dylan Geaney who set up two goals with lovely disguised passes and also slotted over five points of his own. Shane Murphy had an excellent game in goal, both in terms of his kickouts and his shot-stopping. AllStar keeper Shane Ryan returned to the 26 for the first time this season on Saturday so Jack O’Connor has a decision to make there, but Murphy’s performances are making it an extremely difficult call.

Seánie O’Shea is also back in the frame after coming on for the last 15 minutes, so all of a sudden Kerry’s worrying injury list isn’t quite as worrying anymore.

Donegal getting dumped out by Dublin on Sunday was a massive shock and it means that of the three season-long frontrunners for the All-Ireland, only Kerry remain.

It follows that people will be talking up their chances now but there are still teams in the competition that are well capable of catching Kerry on a given day, including quarter-final opponents Tyrone. Given everything they’ve been through, this group of players shouldn’t find it hard to keep their feet on the ground. In 2021, everyone thought it was Kerry’s to lose when Dublin got knocked out by Mayo, but they suffered an agonising defeat to Tyrone in the semi-final. It was a similar story in 2023 when Armagh unexpectedly turned them over.

Tough losses like that aren’t forgotten easily and the will to avoid another one – coupled with the overarching desire to achieve their ultimate goal of winning another All-Ireland – should focus the senses for the challenge that lies ahead.

MAN OF THE MOMENT: David Clifford celebrates after kicking a two-pointer against Armagh. Photo: Brendan Moran/Sportsfile.

As always, great art is underscored by graft

It was the longest day of the year for Armagh, and it came a day early with the 13-point trouncing by Kerry in the Fitzgerald Stadium on June 20. The road was long enough for the huge Armagh support that travelled, fair dues to them. Bridie Gallagher sang the praises of Armagh; it’s the orchard of Erin's green land for the Boys from the County Armagh. Apparently, the ashes of Brian Boru are buried beside their famous Cathedral, but the Kerry boys raided the orchard, and by the 13th minute, the juiciest apple of all was plucked.

Ten minutes had gone and David Clifford hadn’t scored. He hadn’t even touched the ball. Then, 13 on 13, the Big Fella struck. A quick sideline ball released Dylan Geaney, who sent an inch-perfect pass to David. He fumbled the ball. For the ordinary player, it was a missed opportunity, but he has so many weapons in his armoury and the steely mind to pursue perfection that he still managed to score a goal. Even Homer nodded, but David recovered and wiped out Armagh’s early points. The wall was scaled, and Kerry picked a rich harvest.

For Ethan Rafferty, the horror of the final minute versus Louth the previous week just went on and on.

Kerry are back on track, but it won’t be an express-train, a non-stop odyssey, before Paul Geaney says as Gaeilge: “Is mór an onóir dom an corn seo a ghlacadh ar son fhoireann Chiarraí. Ciarraí Abú.” Three more hurdles need to be negotiated before breasting the tape and winning the gold medal of Gaelic football.

Kerry leave their favourite venue, the Fitzgerald Stadium, after trouncing Armagh and now face Tyrone in Croke Park at 6.15pm. No, that is not a typo. How in God’s name did the GAA/CCC arrive at that decision? At the time of writing, the regular last train out of Heuston, Dublin, will be well on its way with the Kerry v Tyrone game still in full flow. So, how will Kerry supporters make it home by train? They won't, unless Irish Rail puts on a match special, but at the time of writing the silence from IR is deafening. Some will fly or bus it, but the majority of Kerry supporters will have to drive that round trip of 800km, or else stay overnight in Dublin. Those Dublin pric-

es are outrageous, and many will not have family or friends in Dublin to obviate that cost. Furthermore, not everyone has GAA+ if they decide to stay at home. Another big game behind the paywall.

The good news is that the Kerry team will perform well in Croker. It’s a homefrom-home venue versus Tyrone in a run of games somewhat similar to 2025. North v South. Kerry found Tyrone a handful in that semi-final before winning by six points. Also, Tyrone have been the nemesis of Kerry at under-age levels until a few weeks ago when Tomás Ó Sé’s U20s prevented Tyrone from winning that title for the third year running. It is Kerry’s first title at the grade since 2008. Kerry play well in Croke Park. That venue has scuppered Jimmy’s will-fix-it dream, horror stories when Kerry beat them in the 2025 final and the unfancied Dub proves that lightning can strike twice, winning v fancied Donegal 1-23 to 2-18 AET.

There were 24,648 opinions from the attendance in The Park last Sunday. My observations are personal as usual, not claiming any astute analysis. Here goes. Individual brilliance is wonderful, but unsung heroes were the seven defenders, 1 to 7. Solid work throughout, even when Armagh had possession. Thus far, no further. Armagh got as far as the Great Wall of China, but were never allowed to climb the wall.

Centres Mike Breen and Jason Foley excelled. Shane Murphy continues to do the basics so well. Unlike Rafferty, who was AWOL for most of the game and paid the ultimate price. A clean

sheet is always welcome to goalkeepers. His kickout returns were magnificent.

For the first 10 minutes, Armagh monopolised possession, raiding up along Kerry’s right flank of defence. Were Ó Beaglaoich and Murphy in trouble? They appeared to be, but on closer scrutiny, their immediate opponents had interchanged. Who was marking whom?

Kerry were patient. Armagh could play keepball all day long, interchanging and passing in and out and across the field. Boring. Not again, the bad old days before

Central defenders Mike Breen and Jason Foley excelled, and Shane Murphy continues to do the basics so well.

the New Rules came in to provide entertaining football. This was very poor quality. Kerry worked smartly. The first commandment: full defence. Screen just outside the arc. Awful stuff to watch but effective, and even more important, it was an efficient use of stamina and native football acumen. Armagh had well over 60% of possession and should have led by up to six points by the interval. How come the half-time score was Kerry 2-8 Armagh 0-8?

Two moments of magic. Armagh led 4-1 shooting into the scoreboard end with that magnificent vista of the MacGillicuddy Reeks providing the perfect canvas for an artist to create a thing of beauty. However, great art is underscored by hard graft. The Sistine Chapel in Rome by Michelangelo is a supreme masterpiece of Renaissance art. Art needed hard graft. One minute to half-time. Armagh playing the hooter, but Jason Foley sent a quick direct ball on to the alert Captain Paul. Geaney at his best, goal poacher and the Armagh keeper didn’t learn from the famous 1978 All-Ireland final. The AWOL Paddy Cullen tried to get back into the goal, but it was like the woman who left the bread in the oven unattended. The smell of burning bread told its own story.

Goals followed by Joe O’Connor and what I thought was a mishit by lively sub Keith Evans sneaked inside the post for number four.

Armagh did pile on the pressure, and only shrewd positioning by Kerry goalkeeper Shane Murphy, aided by lastditch block downs by his clubmate Mark O’Shea, prevented certain goal chances. Late two pointers. The horse had bolted; Croke Park beckoned. Kerry’s weakest link was Diarmuid O’Connor. The game was passing him by, and it was only when the result of the game was obvious that he featured. He certainly has had long periods of shoulder injuries.

The Kerry selectors were spoiled for choice picking the team for Croke Park, with three All-Stars on the bench

straining against the leash, but when the substitute is doing so well, who will be dropped?

The team was due to be announced after this column was put to bed. Will Shane Ryan reclaim the number 1 spot from Shane Murphy, who has been so successful all season? Tom O’Sullivan is clear of injury but not match fit. Tried and trusted Paul Murphy to continue. Gavin White, an inspirational captain lifting the Sam Maguire in 2025, is fit after a very long-term ankle injury, but he has made just cameo appearances to date. He may not start but will be brought on.

Mark O’Shea and Seán O’Brien have been the best, and they are still the best midfield pairing, reproducing the All-Ireland winning displays of 2025. You can't quibble with a scoreline of 4-18, so will they start Seánie O’Shea at centre forward and rest an obviously less than 100% fit Paudie Clifford? Seánie is unlikely to start, I expect. Why does the figure 13 arouse such suspicion? The Last Supper had 13 people at the table. Buildings skip naming the 13th floor, and Friday the 13th has several connotations in folklore. How about 13 and reality? Who wore the Kerry number 13 geansaí v Armagh? At what time did he change the course of the game despite an initial fumbled opportunity? What did he score? 13. Final score 4-18 to 0-17. Do the maths. Kerry won by 13. 13 is unlucky for some in bingo jargon. David Clifford doesn’t play bingo: he plays ducks and drakes with any opponent, or more accurately, at least two defenders. He had several markers v Armagh, and he burned them all. I spoke with Johnny Foley, the only survivor from Kerry’s 1953 All-Ireland final win v Armagh.

Johnny, you were very confident predicting a big win over Armagh because, in your words, Kerry are better footballers. “And wasn’t I right?” he replies. What did you think of the Armagh goalkeeper coming outfield so often? “Madness. In our day, you stayed in your goal and daren’t come outside the square. The teams from the North love to do that. Even the Monaghan goalkeeper was doing it. Stay at home. Do your own job.”

How about the Tyrone match in Croke Park on Saturday? “Yes, Kerry again. They showed great form in Killarney against Armagh. Kerry often found it hard to beat Tyrone under the old rules when they crowded out Kerry, but now the game is faster and more open. The Canavans are always dangerous, but Kerry have too many good players. Croke Park will suit Kerry. Yes, I am confident they will beat Tyrone no matter what tactics Tyrone use. Kerry are coming into form at the right time with very good subs to come on when they need them.”

I agree with you, Johnny. Yes, Kerry have the power to overcome.

Eight is great for league champs Celtic

Killarney Celtic got the better of town rivals Killarney Athletic in the KDL Premier League final in Tralee on Saturday last as an early strike credited to Liam Carey turned out to be the only goal of the game.

The Blues had finished several points clear of the Celts at the end of the league phase but unfortunately for them they were just unable to transfer that season-long control to the decider at Moun-

thawk Park.

Celtic hit the front after just four minutes of play. Good defensive work allowed them to set Trpimir Vrljicak away on the left. Vrljicak in turn found Stephen McCarthy who crossed towards Carey and the ball ended up in the net (possibly via an Athletic defender), prompting joyous scenes for all the Celts in attendance. Athletic subsequently settled into the game and began to put Celtic's defence under pressure, but safe handling from

Roy Kelliher denied Athletic from a free kick.

Brendan Moloney’s side again went close to levelling after 30 minutes after good play down the left, but Celtic held firm. They then responded with an effort of their own when good defensive play by Nattagun Ryan led to an attack down the left, which culminated in Stephen McCarthy going close at the near post. Vrljicak and Kennedy Amechi threatened too but there were no further goals before half-

time and the teams retired with the score still at 1-0.

In the second half Celtic’s Lee Downing and Athletic’s Josh Bowler had chances for their respective teams. The latter had one final effort in the 89th minute but Kelliher dealt with it.

The Hoops saw the game out deep in Athletic territory to clinch their eighth consecutive league title, and experienced captain Matt Keane accepted the trophy on behalf of his teammates.

Weekend of excellence for Killarney Valley AC

Great excitement and success was had on a fantastic day for Killarney Valley AC’s youngest athletes at the National Children’s Games in Tullamore last Sunday.

Gold and silver medals were achieved while proudly continuing KVAC's tradition of producing national medal winning sprinters.

The U9 girls’ 4x100m relay team of Kaylee Lynch, Aoife McSwiney, Amelia Duggan, Aria Casey and Elle O'Donoghue set a time of 67.79 to win the gold. Bríd Golden, the president of the AAI (Athletics Association of Ireland) presented the girls with their national gold medals.

The U9 pairs of Kaylee Lynch 9.85 and Aoife McSwiney 9.87 claimed the silver national medal, James Doody was 7th in the 600m in 1.42.74, and Reece O'Donoghue was 11th in the javelin in 25.26m. With other athletes travelling to qualify for the nationals at such a young age, the club’s athletes achieved some remarka-

ble feats, which ultimately come down to their own ability and dedication.

Saturday was another historic day for Killarney Valley AC as both the Women’s and Men’s Teams qualified for the Premier Division Final of the Athletics Ireland National League in Tullamore. Competing against 16 of the country’s leading clubs, the women’s team finished third overall, while the men’s team placed fourth, earning both teams a place among Ireland’s top eight clubs for the National League Final in Dublin on August 9 and significantly outperforming expectations.

With the overall winners progressing to the European Club League of Track and Field, there will be plenty at stake in the final.

The results are a reflection of the efforts of the athletes, coaches and supporters resulting in an outstanding team performance. Congratulations also to the Kerry county teams, who finished top of the County Team League standings.

CHAMPIONS: The Killarney Celtic team that defeated neighbours Athletic in the Kerry Premier League final in Tralee.

U16 BOYS COUNTY LEAGUE: Killarney Legion 0-14 Kilcummin 2-8. In Div 1A Our U16 Boys opened their County League campaign this evening against neighbours Kilcummin in very wet conditions in Johnny Culloty Park. We started the game well and scored the first 2 points. Kilcummin then hit a purple patch and scored 2-3 without reply. The lads fought very hard for the remainder of the half and by the interval narrowed the gap to 2 points with Kilcummin leading 2-4 to 0-8. The boys continued to play well through the second half and hit the lead with a few minutes to go. Kilcummin drew level. We had one last chance but couldn't get a shot away to win the game. Thanks to Kilcummin for a great game and to Padraig O'Sullivan for great officiating. Unfortunately during the first half our midfielder Kieran Moloney suffered a shoulder injury. Everyone in the team and club wish Kieran well and hope he makes a swift recovery

U13 BOYS: Our u13 boys played their second game in the u13 East Kerry league this evening against Glenflesk. Glenflesk missing a few of their regulars took to the field against the boys in White and Green. With the aid of a strong breeze Legion took the lead and produced good scores to lead at the half time whistle. Glenflesk looked lively at the start of the second half and with the breeze helped them to some good scores from distance. Our lads kept up the scores at the other end also with several players getting on the score sheet. When Mike Morrisey blew the final whistle legion had the win.

Spa GAA

COUNTY LEAGUE: Spa produced one of their best performances of the season on Sunday afternoon to record a vital 2-13 to 0-17 victory away to newly crowned Division 1 champions Kenmare Shamrocks. Needing points in the battle to avoid relegation, Spa made a dream start with goals from Eoin Fitzgerald and Evan Cronin helping them build a six-point lead before half-time. Kenmare showed why they are league champions with a determined second-half comeback and reduced the gap to a single point in the closing stages,

but Spa showed tremendous character and resilience to withstand the pressure. Important late scores from Gary Vaughan and Evan Cronin, combined with a superb defensive effort, ensured the visitors secured two invaluable league points. The win lifts Spa to 7th place in the table on 10 points, two points clear of the relegation zone heading into the final round of fixtures. We thank all of the Spa supporters who travelled to Kenmare and congratulate Kenmare Shamrocks on winning their first Senior County League title since 1972. Attention now turns to our final league game at home to Gneeveguilla next week, where a positive result will secure Division 1 status for 2027.

MEN'S JUNIOR TEAM: Spa's Junior Men continued their excellent form in County League Division 7B with an impressive 3-15 to 1-12 victory over Keel last Friday evening. The win leaves the team with an unbeaten record of four wins and two draws from their six league outings to date. Attention now turns to their final fixture away to Kerins O'Rahillys next week, where victory would secure the Division 7B Shield title. Fixture details will be announced in due course.

SPA MOTHERS & OTHERS: Spa Mothers & Others enjoyed another wonderful day at the annual Flesk Fest, once again fielding two teams despite a number of players being unavailable. Congratulations to debutants Jill Duggan, Norma Murphy and Fiona Ashe, who proudly wore the Spa jersey for the first time.

Dr Crokes GAA

U13's have had a busy few weeks playing 4 games in the East Kerry league and also playing a tournament in Kilmurryabricken in Clare. In our first game we travelled to Sneem to take on Na Fianna and came away with a great win on a shoreline of 5:16 to 3:07. Playing with the aid of the breeze in the first half we opened very well with Danny Dowling and Mark Clifford dominant at midfield, Dowling got 2 goals in a 5-minute spell while goals from Daniel Moloney and Luke McMahon had us leading at half time by 4:08 to 5 points. Na Fianna got more into it in the second half and got within 7 points of us with 15 minutes to go, but we finished very strong with John Byrne and Mark O’Leary adding 3 points each and Eryk McGrath getting our fifth goal. At the back Tiarnan Kavanagh, Rob Young and Oran Barrett were keeping the home team at bay. Next up we played Spa in Crokes and after a disappointing first half where we trailed by 12 points on a score of 3:08 to 5 points, a spirited second half with 2 goals from Oran Barrett got us back level with 5 minutes to

play, but spa finished stronger to win by 3 points. We then played Fossa and had a very comprehensive win with Luke McMahon getting 2 goals and Mark Clifford also very prominent. Our last game was last Friday where we were beaten narrowly by 3 points by Listry. After a good start into the breeze Listry had a strong second quarter to lead by 3 at half time. We battled hard in second half but couldn’t get on level terms. On the night Eryk McGrath was our best player while others to do well were Tiarnan Kavanagh, Ross Griffin, Mark Clifford and Tymur Misiura. Overall we had some great games and the boys have continued to improve from game to game. Next up is the Colm Cooper tournament on 12th September.

LOTTO took place on June 22nd Numbers drawn were 4, 13, 22, 27. Jackpot of €7,400 was not WON. 6 patrons matched 3 and receive €70 each. Jackpot for draw on June 29th will be €7,700. Play online. LOTTO: The numbers drawn on 21/06/2026 for a jackpot of €9,150 were 1, 13, 16, 22. There was no jackpot winner. The €40 consolation prize winners were; Patrick O’Reilly, Kieran Dennehy, Mary Fitzgerald, Patsy and Pauline Dennehy, B O’Sullivan. Tickets are available from our sellers and can also be bought online. COUNTY LEAGUE DIV 3: Our seniors travelled to a very scenic Castlegregory on Sunday but unfortunately didn’t get the result they were looking for. Fossa started well with scores from Ted O’Gorman and Harry Kelly, but Castlegregory hit the front after ten minutes and led from there to the finish. They had the aid of a strong wind in the first half and really made it count, scoring 1-6 without reply in a five-minute spell, a two pointer from Tadgh O’Shea and a Harry Kelly point kept the scoreboard ticking for Fossa but they trailed 1-15 to 0-6 at the break. The hard-working Harry Kelly kicked a fine two pointer on the resumption; this was followed by a Jack Clifford score and two excellent scores from Tadhg O’Shea to cut the deficit to five points after ten minutes. Castlegregory settled and got a crucial second goal in the 15th minute, Fossa to be fair never gave up the chase, Shane O’Sullivan pulled of a brilliant save from a penalty kick and they kicked a brace of excellent scores from Harry Kelly and Tadhg O’Shea but couldn’t bridge the gap and the home side ran out winners on a score of 2-23 to 0-21. Team; Shane O’Sullivan, Jack Hallissey, Paddy Sheehan, Brian Myers, Kieran O’Sullivan, Sam Buckley (Capt), Fionn Doyle, Matt Rennie, Darren Ryan, Tadhg O’Shea 0-12, Ted O’Gorman 0-1, Harry Buckley, Dan O’Keeffe, Harry Kelly 0-6, Cian O’Shea, Michael O’Dwyer, Anthony O’Keeffe, Jack Clifford 0-2, Eoin Talbot, Fintan Coffey, David Butler.

Kilcummin GAA

CO LEAGUE DIV 1: Dr Crokes 3-14 Kilcummin 2-13. Despite a much-improved performance than of late our senior team lost out to Dr Crokes by four points on Sunday. Two first half goals from Philip O’Leary saw us lead at half time 2-10 to 1-09 but two Crokes goals in the second half laid the foundation for a valuable win for them leaving us facing relegation. Team and scorers: Dylan Cronin, Jack Fogarty 0-1, Dara Stack, James Nagle 0-1, Sean O’Leary, Dara O’Callaghan, Keelan O’Shea, Mark O'Shea, 0-3, Paul O’Shea 0-2, Cian Foley, Kevin Gorman, Philip O’Leary 2-01, Mikey Casey 0-3, Gary O’Leary 0-1, Paudie Moynihan 0-1. The match saw a welcome return after four years of Kevin McCarthy. Final game of the league is away to Rathmore in two weeks.

Congratulations also to the Kerry county teams, who finished top of the County Team League standings.

NATIONAL CHILDREN'S GAMES: Killarney Valley AC’s youngest athletes enjoyed a memorable day at the National Children’s Games and U12 Championships in Tullamore, bringing home national gold and silver medals and continuing the club’s proud tradition of success on the sprint track. Killarney Salmon & Trout Angling Club

CUP: On Sunday the 21st of June, in brilliant sunshine, the rescheduled Micky Griffin Cup Competition on Lough Lein took place. To say it was warm was an understatement and at the weigh in shed after the day, the conversation centred around the sun block that had worked the best! True to form though, even in the conditions, anglers recorded catches and were duly commended for their efforts in the sunshine. The competition was won by Anthony Griffin, who claimed his father’s cup for the second year in a row. The top five rods on the day were as follows: 1) Anthony Griffin, 2) Billy O’Dea, 3) Tim Ryan, 4) Steve Cambell, 5) Donal Doherty. The heaviest trout on the day was a lovely 450g Trout which was on the rod of Tim Ryan. On foot of four of our seven senior competitions now having been fished, the angler of the year points race is interesting. On top spot is Mick Linehan with 25 points but on foot of Sunday's fishing, Anthony Griffin has now moved to 24 points, putting the pressure on! The following pack are tightly spaced from 16 to 20 points and still well in contention.
