An air of profound sadness fell over Killarney over the weekend and early into the week as news emerged of the passing of Sarah "Susie" Egan, of Coolick, Kilcummin.
Sarah passed away peacefully on May 27, surrounded by her loving family in the care of the Palliative Care Unit at University Hospital Kerry.
Her passing leaves an immeasurable void across the entire community, where she spent her life nurturing, teaching, and bringing immense joy to generations of children.
She was laid to rest on Monday morning following a deeply moving Requiem Mass at St Mary’s Cathedral, with the town and her many colleagues coming together to bid farewell to a uniquely beautiful soul.
Margaret Reen and the staff at Holy Cross Mercy Early Years and School Age Service, together with the wider school community, were plunged into sadness by the loss of their much-loved colleague and friend.
Sarah joined the service in 2021 and quickly became a valued and cherished member of the close-knit team. From the outset, her dedication, creativity, and natural ability shone through in everything she did. She brought imagination, enthusiasm, and an exceptional eye for detail to her work, enriching the experiences of the children in her care.
Through her artistic flair, countless children created personalised artwork and crafts that remain treasured keepsakes for families to this day. Sarah took great pride in helping children express themselves creatively and in making every activity meaningful and memorable. She also had a remarkable ability to connect with children of all ages, whether in Preschool, Afterschool, or Homework Club. Deeply committed to helping every child reach their full potential, Sarah had a gift for making each child feel valued, supported, and understood. Her patience, kindness, and encouragement left a lasting impression on the many young lives she touched.
While Sarah was gentle and quiet by

nature, those who knew her best also appreciated her roguish and sometimes mischievous sense of humour. She loved sharing laughter and light-hearted banter with colleagues, parents, and children alike, bringing warmth and joy to everyday moments.
For her colleagues, Sarah was far more than a co-worker; she was a trusted friend, a valued teammate, and an integral part of their work family. Her loss is deeply felt, but she is remembered with immense affection, gratitude, and admiration. The staff remain thankful for the time they shared with her and for the lasting impression she leaves within both the Early Years Service and the wider school community.
On behalf of the broader school community, Alice Davern, Principal of Holy Cross Mercy School, shared a poignant tribute: "It was with profound sadness that we learned of the passing of Sarah Egan, a valued and much-loved member of the Holy Cross Mercy Pre-School and After-School Service team. Sarah worked closely with many of our pupils through the preschool and Afterschool services, becoming a familiar and much-loved
presence in the lives of so many children and families within our school community. She brought kindness, warmth and compassion to her work each day and had a natural gift for connecting with children. Sarah was gentle, thoughtful and creative, and her quiet generosity touched the lives of all who knew her. Sarah was deeply respected and greatly appreciated by all in the Holy Cross Mercy School community and her positive influence will be remembered with great fondness by all."
As a mark of respect, staff and management of the Early Years and School Age Service, joined by numerous colleagues from the main school, parents, and children, formed a Guard of Honour through the Cathedral grounds and the town as Sarah made her final journey.
Before and alongside her time at the Mercy, Sarah was a cornerstone of the team at the Aquila Club. Eoin Horgan, Gleneagle Leisure Manager, shared a heartfelt tribute to the lasting impact she made as a swimming instructor:
"Our Sarah was the most beautiful soul we ever had the privilege to know, beautiful not only in appearance, but in the kindness, warmth and love she gave so
freely to everyone around her. She devoted 16 years of her life in the Aquila to the children of Killarney and the wider county, teaching generations not only how to swim, but how to believe in themselves and dream big. The care, patience and encouragement she showed to every child she taught and looked after will never be forgotten. She left her mark on so many young lives, and every one of those children was better for having known her. Sarah was adored by all of us here and by all of our customers. Her smile, her presence and the way she made everyone feel special brought joy wherever she went. She was truly one of a kind, and the loss we all feel is immeasurable. While our hearts are broken, we can take solace in knowing that what we have lost heaven has gained... a truly beautiful person, inside and out. Goodbye Susie."
Sarah's memory will live on in the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing her. Her photograph now hangs proudly in the preschool corridor, serving as a lasting reminder of her invaluable contribution and the difference she made to the children, families, and colleagues whose lives she touched.
In the weeks ahead, Sarah's absence will be felt profoundly, particularly as Preschool Graduation approaches. Graduation Day was always one of the highlights of the preschool year for Sarah. She devoted countless hours of thought, planning, creativity, and energy to making the occasion a special and memorable celebration for every child and family. This year, as the children mark that important milestone, Sarah will be greatly missed, yet her influence and the love she invested in each child's journey will remain very much a part of the day.
Sarah is deeply loved and sadly missed by her heartbroken parents, John and Bridget; her loving sister, Stephanie; and her brothers, Chris, Mark, and Darragh. She is also mourned by her sister-in-law, Sarah; brother-in-law, Daithí; her aunts, uncles, cousins, neighbours, friends, and her loyal companion, Teddy.
Sarah spoke often and lovingly about her family, and her face would light up whenever she talked about her adored nieces and nephews: Jack, Oisín, Isabelle, A.J., Daisy, and baby Fionn.

Killarney actress Jessie Buckley has been selected as the 2026 recipient of the Kerry Association in Dublin Arts Award in recognition of her outstanding contribution to the Arts.
The 36-year-old made history in March 2026 by becoming the first Irish woman to win the Academy Award for Best Actress for her performance in Hamnet. Her portrayal of Agnes Shakespeare also earned her a clean sweep of major global accolades this year, including a Golden Globe, a BAFTA, a Critics Choice Award, a Screen Actors Guild (Actor) Award, and an IFTA.
The Arts Award, established by the Kerry Association in Dublin to recognise excellence by individuals born or raised in the county, will be formally presented to Buckley in the near future.
Jimmy Deenihan, Chairperson of the Kerry Association in Dublin Arts Sub Committee, stated that the decision to grant the prestigious award to Buckley was unanimous following her historic awards season.
"This monumental achievement by Jessie comes as a major boost for the burgeoning Irish film industry and will inspire a new generation of Irish screen talent," Mr Deenihan said. "In her acceptance speech, Jessie endeared herself to a global audience with her dignified humility
Deputy Michael Healy-Rae has said that while the TFI Anseo pilot project in Killarney has undoubtedly provided a valuable public transport service for many people, serious questions now need to be asked about its long-term financial sustainability.
The comments come following a reply received from the National Transport Authority (NTA), which confirmed that fare revenue generated by the service between August 2025 and March 2026 amounted to €62,565, while the operating cost over the same period was €495,000.
Deputy Healy-Rae said: “There is no doubt that many people have benefited from the TFI Anseo service. It has provided a flexible transport option, particularly for those without access to a car, older people, students and workers who need to get around Killarney. I have heard positive feedback from a lot of users and that should be acknowledged.”
He continued: “However, we also have to be honest and ask questions about the figures that have now been provided by the NTA. The service generated just over €62,500 in fare income during the period in question, while costing almost half a million euro to operate. That means the taxpayer is carrying the overwhelming majority of the cost.”
Deputy Healy-Rae said that while public transport services will always require some level of subsidy, there must be a clear understanding of whether the current model can be sustained in the longer term.
“Nobody expects rural or local transport services to make a profit, nor should they. Public transport is a public service. However, there is a difference between subsidising a service and having a situation where the cost and income are so far apart. It is only fair that questions are asked as to whether the model is sustainable and whether value for money is being achieved.”
and the love and pride she expressed in her family and her county."
Jeremy Twomey, Chairperson of the Kerry Association in Dublin, described Buckley as a sensational, deeply talented woman who serves as an outstanding role model.
"She has done Kerry and Ireland proud," Mr Twomey said. "This deeply talented, sensational woman can act in any capacity—guileless or knowing, reserved or uncontained, transmit glee, ecstasy, dread, fear or confusion. She brings her audiences with her and is an outstanding role model for the younger generation who look at her and aspire to access on the world stage."
Brigid Laffan, President of the Kerry Association, noted the immense pride within the county regarding Buckley's level-headedness throughout her international success, calling her work in Hamnet "nothing short of wonderful."
In accepting the accolade, Jessie Buckley paid tribute to her roots in the Kingdom.
"Growing up in Kerry was a gift in recognising the capacity for beauty and wildness in our own human expression from the nature I grew up around," Buckley said. "Thank you, this is a great honour to accept this award."

'Whistleblowing
Whistleblower Dr Maya Sharma, who exposed the Kerry Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS) scandal, could set up a private practice in Killarney according to Mayor of Killarney Martin Grady.
The consultant psychiatrist previously exposed the over-medication and inappropriate treatment of patients at South Kerry CAMHS. Following her disclosures, an investigation revealed that hundreds of young people in Kerry’s child and adolescent mental health services were harmed or put at risk of harm due to unsafe clinical practices.
Dr Maya Sharma recently thanked the affected patients and families for their support. Mayor Martin Grady indicated that the consultant has expressed an interest in returning to the area.
“As Mayor of Killarney, I wish to acknowl-
edge the courage and integrity shown by Dr. Maya Sharma in speaking out during the Kerry CAMHS controversy," Mayor Grady said. "Following recent interviews on Radio Kerry and discussions with a close friend of Dr Sharma involved in the Kerry CAMHS case, it is understood that Dr. Sharma has a strong affection for Kerry and that her goal and wish is to return to Killarney and establish a private practice in County Kerry, she also mentioned her love for the National Park."
"Personally, and as Mayor of Killarney, I want to sincerely thank Dr. Sharma for her bravery and honesty in coming forward and speaking the truth for the betterment and protection of vulnerable young people receiving treatment. Her actions required immense courage, and many families throughout Kerry and beyond recognise the importance of what she did.”

Patients to move to new Community Hospital by end of June. Photo: Molly Thockwana
The long-running saga surrounding the opening of the new Killarney Community Hospital is nearing its end, with confirmation that patients will be transferred to the facility by the end of June.
Independent TD Danny Healy-Rae confirmed the timeline following a meeting with the HSE. Patients currently residing in St Columbanus' Home and the existing Killarney District Hospital are scheduled to be relocated to the new state-ofthe-art development within weeks.
"Following a meeting with HSE, I am very glad about the update that patients from Columbanus and the District Hospital in Killarney will be moved to the new Killarney Community Hospital by the end of June," Deputy Healy-Rae said.
"I had raised the urgent need for this in the Dáil and at every opportunity. This is very welcome news for all concerned."
The purpose-built 130-bed Community Nursing Unit (CNU) has been at an advanced stage of readiness, with room allocations already agreed with existing residents. The final phase of the project involves securing official registration from the health watchdog, HIQA, before the doors can officially open.
The transfer will mark the closure of the older St Columbanus' Home and Killarney District Hospital facilities.
The Great Southern Killarney has recently achieved a coveted fivestar rating, following significant investment across their guestrooms, dining, and event facilities.
The newly crowned five-star hotel has announced a new brand identity under the campaign theme Splendour, Untamed, positioning the hotel as a luxury destination which honors its heritage. The Splendour, Untamed concept speaks to duality at the heart of a stay. Splendour reflects the elegance of the hotel, restored interiors, luxurious accommodation and warm, attentive service. Untamed celebrates the wild beauty of Killarney, and the spirit of exploration it inspires. Curated guest experiences bring this to life, from guided foraging tours and photography walks through Killarney National Park to wellness activities designed to deepen a connection with the destination. A highlight of the elevated offering is Arbour, the ho-
tel's brasserie. Grand yet relaxed, Arbour combines original architectural features with a contemporary feel, serving refined classics and seasonal dishes from County Kerry producers. Jamie Power, General Manager, said that securing five-star status and unveiling their new branding marks a defining moment for the hotel. He explained: “It is important that our brand reflects the unique balance of rich heritage, adventure and contemporary luxury that defines a stay here. Killarney is a truly unique destination, but it is our people who bring it to life. The warmth, personality and genuine hospitality of our team sit at the heart of every guest experience and is remembered long after they leave,” The rebrand is accompanied by a refreshed visual identity, new website and brand video, rolling out across all digital channels, marking the next chapter for a hotel that has been at the heart of Killarney for over 170 years.

There is an old saying that no matter where you travel in the world, you are bound to find an Irish man there before you. For Fossa native Frank McCarthy, that bit of folklore became a startling reality just a couple of hundred meters from the roof of the world.

While making his final push toward the summit of Mount Everest in Nepal on May 25, McCarthy encountered a climber on his way down.
It turned out to be a Galway native now living in Seattle. The pair, who were previously acquainted, paused amidst the unforgiving altitude to briefly exchange pleasantries, much like old friends crossing paths on New Street , sharing a quick word about the mammoth task at hand before one continued upward and the other focused on a safe descent.
It was just one of several Irish connections that illuminated a gruelling, high-altitude journey. A few days prior, while resting at Camp 3, McCarthy learned that Tyrone mountaineer Robert Kelso Smith, one of the most experienced Irish climbers to ever tackle Everest, was in the camp zone.
Sticking his head out of his tent, the Kerry man yelled into the thin, frozen air: "Up the Kingdom!" From across the quiet mountain edge, a booming reply echoed back: "For f**k sake, you can't escape a Kerry man!"
Now back in his Dubai apartment where he has lived for many years years, normality is slowly returning for the Killarney native, though the scale of his historic achievement is still sinking in. Standing atop the 8,848-meter peak, McCarthy officially became the youngest-ever Kerry native to conquer Mount Everest.
The monumental expedition, however, came together almost by chance. Back in 2013, McCarthy scaled Mount Kilimanjaro, sparking a long-term fascination with the ‘Seven Summits” the highest peaks on each of the seven continents. Earlier this year, he climbed Carstensz Pyramid, the highest point in Oceania.
While on a leave of absence from work during that Oceania trip, his expedition leader was Garrett Madison, one of the world's most accomplished Everest guides with over ten successful summits to his name.
Madison convinced McCarthy that he possessed the physical and mental resilience required for Everest. With a narrow two-month window to prepare for a rapid-ascent expedition, the Fossa man went into hyper-focus.
Part of that rigorous preparation includ-

ed living out of a specialized hypoxic tent pitched directly inside his Dubai apartment bedroom for over a month. The tent gradually reduced oxygen levels over the weeks to simulate extreme altitude, forcing his body to acclimatise before he even set foot in Nepal.
"I had to ask myself each day: Have I eaten? How many calories did I take in?" McCarthy recalled, reflecting on his meticulous routine. "It required a single-minded, almost selfish focus. But I knew that without that preparation work, I wouldn’t be ready."
Passing the frozen bodies of failed attempts along the route served as a sobering reminder of the mountain's stakes. Rather than deterring him, it forced a state of hyper-vigilance.
When he finally stepped onto the highest point on earth in the early hours of May 25, the moment brought more relief than celebration.
He said: “The job is only half done, focus switches almost immediately to a safe descent. It is worse on the way down, you can see the drops.”
The descent proved even more demanding, requiring a constant check of harnesses and belts every few paces while staring down steep precipices.
Yet, as the air grew thicker with every downward step, McCarthy felt his cognitive abilities and physical strength rapidly reinvigorate.
By the time he returned to Base Camp, the physical toll was stark. The gruelling 32-day rapid expedition had cost the former Fossa GAA senior player 13kg in body weight.
“It’s almost like an exaggerated feeling of jet lag , my sleep is still disrupted,” he said Now, having traded minus-degree mountain gales for the 40-degree heat of Dubai, McCarthy is slowly readjusting to regular life, though he jokes that a few pints of Guinness will be required on his next trip back to Kerry to help restore the lost weight.
“Without looking at the footage and photos, I’d nearly struggle to believe it actually happened myself,” he laughed.

The Three Peaks committee from Killarney Cycling Club received a fundraising boost ahead of this Saturday’s event, thanks to a donation from Kevin and Patricia Ennis of Centra Muckross Road.
The funds were raised through a recycling initiative at the store, where shoppers and local residents drop plastic bottles and cans into designated blue bins. Kevin and Patricia process these containers through the Deposit Return Scheme (DRS) machine and donate 100% of the proceeds to charity, even rescuing recyclables from general waste bins. The project has raised nearly €17,000 for various good causes to date.
This latest donation will support the club’s chosen charity for the 2026 cycle, Comfort for Chemo Kerry. All proceeds

go directly to the Oncology Unit at University Hospital Kerry. Because several Comfort for Chemo committee members work on the frontline at the hospital, they are directly aware of the unit’s exact needs.

It is not every day an Olympian joins the Killarney parkrun, but participants had exactly that experience last Saturday, when two-time Ukrainian Olympic skeleton racer Vladyslav Heraskevych joined the event at Killarney House and Gardens. Heraskevych completed the 5km route alongside members of both the local and Ukrainian communities as part of the annual Ukrainian Chestnut Run. The charity tradition originated in Kyiv 33 years ago and has been organised locally by the Killarney Ukrainian community for the past four years.
The athlete previously captured global attention at the 2026 Winter Games in Milan-Cortina with his “Helmet of Mem-

ory” tribute to fallen athletes. His appearance in Killarney was part of a week-long tour of athletic and educational centres across south-west Ireland. He spent Friday night in Tralee ahead of the Saturday morning run. During his stay in the region, Heraskevych visited the MTU Tralee campus to meet with students, researchers, and local representatives to discuss sports diplomacy, sustainability, and inclusive sports.

The crew prepared for the event with marathon training sessions on Lough Lein over the past few weeks, aided by
coxes Orlaith O'Sullivan, Caoimhe Kelly, Aodhagán O'Sullivan, and Noel Prendergast.
Club organisers extended thanks to Colm O'Súillebháin for organising the trip, Karol Kelly for towing the boat, Breda Burke for logistical support, and the travelling supporters. Thanks were also expressed to Fossa Rowing Club for the use of their trailer over the weekend.

The continued growth of female participation at Killarney Judo Club was highlighted at the recent Interprovincial Championships, where seven of the club's ten Munster representatives were girls.

Clíona Hegarty were also part of the Minor Girls team that earned silver.
The representation reflects the growing number of female athletes progressing through the ranks at the Killarney club and competing at provincial level. Alongside the girls' achievements, Devon Koen represented the Minor Boys team, Saba Kandaleki was part of the gold medal-winning Pre-Cadet squad, and James Maher earned silver while competing up an age grade in the Junior division.

Interview conducted by Ryan Twomey, Ryan Kissane, Cormac Flanagan and Aodhagán Ó Suilleabháin
Each month , the schools transition year students will spotlight alumni who have carried the school’s values beyond its walls, leading, innovating, and serving in diverse fields locally and around the world.
Name: Kevin Leahy
Occupation: Owner of Black Sheep Hostel Killarney/ Artic Explorer. Year of Graduation: 2001
Could you describe a typical day for you?
I generally get up at 6am and I do some exercise or breath work. I am into the Black Sheep for half 7 or 8. I do a little bit of admin work there. I don't really have a typical day.
I could find myself doing anything in a day, from working at home on a rewilding project to organising rewild festival to running or mountain biking. I love the variety
What part did St Brendan’s College play in shaping your career path?
I would say that the whole experience was just one positive memory. It taught us about hard work. Ed O'Neill was a teacher when I started. He got us big into technical graphics. It led me to doing civil engineering. I got a degree in civil engineering, and I worked in Australia for ten years as a civil engineer. It kind of set me on the track to working hard and getting set up as an engineer. It gave us a good solid education and some discipline.
Where did you work as an engineer?
I started in Sydney and spent time in Brisbane and the Gold Coast. I travelled a lot through work. I worked on some massive projects including desalination projects, metro tunnels, underground and open cut coal mines. It was getting very stressful. I would be more into lifestyle and enjoy life experiences rather than working my way up to the top of a ladder and being really stressed. I finished up the engineering and I went to South America. I backpacked in South America for a year and a half and then returned to Ireland. I bought the Black Sheep building, renovated it and opened it as a hostel. It is a very chilled environment. I like talking to the travellers who pass through the hostel.

Where did the name the Black Sheep originate?
My sister sent me a package when I was leaving Australia to go to South America. There was a little sheep teddy bear enclosed, instead of taking selfies of me travelling in South America, I just put the little black sheep in my photos. I suppose the black sheep doesn’t always follow the rest of the flock, I think there is a black sheep in all backpackers. Can you describe your last ultramarathon?
The Artic Spine was a 400k cross-country ski in Sweden. The Artic Spine was hardcore. It was like minus 40 degrees at night. You must pull your belongings in a sled. I didn't have much ski experience, the longest I'd ever skied was 30km. If you're good at skiing and the conditions are right, skiing is easier than being on foot. If you have the technique right, you get a bit more glide. You're working less for the forward movement.
It can depend on the conditions as well. It depends on the snow conditions. If it is quite warm, the snow is soft and slushy. The skis can stick easily. You are only sleeping for an hour and a half at night, so I was skiing uphill for a what felt like hours.
The Artic Spine was probably one of my favourite Ultra Marathons, I was in a mountain Range on the Kungsleden Trail. The scenery was great. I could see the Northern Lights nearly every night. Did you ever feel like giving up?
The thought would cross my mind to give up. That's where you dig deep in your resilience. You realise that's just thoughts. I always think that if you give up, then you just go back to a hotel room and an hour later you'll regret it. These things are really testing your body and mind, seeing where the limits are. Your mind is the limit. Your body, if you can feed it and hydrate it and sleep a bit, I'm convinced it will go forever. Your mind is
always going to be your limit. Your mind can give up, or you can teach your mind to never give up.
How important is breath work?
I do a lot of breath work. It is good for keeping my energy up, to keep me balanced and in a good headspace . It balances out your central nervous system so you can deal with stress a lot better. It keeps you calm and it helps you focus
You have fundraised for Down Syndrome Kerry in the past? How important are their services?
They're great services, I have a little niece Emilie with Down Syndrome so that charity does great things, They do a lot of little days out and they've got a charity shop in Tralee so they're a vital service.

The Hugh O’Flaherty Memorial Society has expressed sadness following the passing of Holocaust survivor and inspirational speaker Tomi Reichental.
Reichental had a close connection to the society, having served as the keynote speaker at the 2014 Hugh O’Flaherty Award Ceremony. During that event, the Hugh O’Flaherty International Humanitarian Award was presented to Dr John Beavis, the founder of the medical charity IDEALS. In his 2014 address, Re-

A group of 26 former coach drivers, wives, and friends from the Wallace Arnold tour company returned to Killarney over a recent weekend.
The group travelled from Holyhead to Dublin in a restored Wallace Arnold coach, staying at the Killarney Towers Hotel for three nights.
During the visit, the group drove the vintage coach to local landmarks, including Kate Kearney's Cottage and Muckross House, before returning to town ahead
of the Kerry versus Donegal match. The itinerary also included a trip around the Ring of Kerry.
The trip allowed the former drivers to reconnect and reminisce about their years touring Ireland. Organiser Bob Adams said that the vintage coach drew attention from local residents along the route.
The group noted the absence of several former colleagues who could not travel due to health reasons, including veteran driver Hilton Caldwell who is well known in Killarney.

ichental spoke about the loss of his family and the horrors experienced in Nazi concentration camps during World War II. Following his survival and subsequent relocation to Ireland, he dedicated his life to raising awareness among younger generations of Irish people about the realities of war, cruelty, and the importance
of forgiveness and reconciliation. During the 2014 event, Dr Beavis was recognised for his medical work in the refugee camps of Gaza, operating on children and others injured in conflict. Following the ceremony, Reichental and Dr Beavis formed a strong bond, remaining close friends until Dr Beavis passed away in 2018.

The Sheahan Group has secured planning permission to expand its Centra store on New Street by amalgamating the existing shop at number 14 with an adjacent vacant building. The project includes converting a previously permitted sandwich bar and restaurant space in the vacant unit into retail use. This expansion will significantly grow the group's town centre presence, adding to its existing operations at Main Street and College Square, as well as its flagship store on Mross Road.
The Castlerosse Hotel has been granted planning permission for a major upgrade to its leisure facilities at Knockreer. The development involves extending and converting the current first-floor gymnasium into a dedicated spa and wellness centre. Below this,
a new ground-floor gymnasium will be constructed, featuring an outdoor relaxation area on its roof. Accessible directly from the new spa, this rooftop space will offer guests panoramic views of the Killarney lakes and the McGillycuddy Reeks.
Following the recent announcement of a €100 million refurbishment at The Dunloe Hotel & Gardens, Killarney Hotels Ltd has lodged a planning application for a temporary construction entrance off the L4040 road in Beaufort. The works involve removing an existing timber fence and flagpoles to install a site entrance gate and hoarding. This temporary layout is designed to separate heavy construction traffic from hotel residents and visitors. The original entrance configuration will be fully reinstated once the multi-million euro development is completed.

The Milltown FC U13 team recently returned from an action-packed four-day tour to the Netherlands, which took place from May 24 to 27.
A group of 34 people travelled on the trip, including 18 academy players. The squad tested themselves on the pitch with matches against two high-cal-

ibre Dutch clubs in Rotterdam. Off the pitch, the young players experienced professional training sessions at Excelsior and ADO Den Haag, alongside stadium tours of both Excelsior and Feyenoord. The tour provided excellent preparation for squad member Robyn Horgan, who represents the Kerry Schoolgirls League at the Gaynor Cup this week.

There was a glimmer of hope in the Middle East yesterday when it was reported that Israel and Lebanon had agreed on a ceasefire deal, however that was shattered when Lebanese media reported that Israel conducted airstrikes only hours after the deal was agreed.
National News Agency is Lebanon’s state run media, and they claimed that drone strikes hit several locations in the south of the country, allegedly causing at least one casualty. It comes following

a week of tension between the United States and Iran, who are both trying to agree a deal to end the war that began in February. Both countries indicated that an agreement to reopen the Strait of Hormuz was nearly ready, with both sides disagreeing on wording. However, no deal has been signed off on yet. It is unclear how talks are progressing. This week, it was reported that Iran attacked
Kuwait’s airport, however the country denies any responsibility and claims the damage was caused by an error from a US missile interceptor. The US denies those allegations. It was reported this week that Trump had a phone call with Israel’s Benjamin Netanyahu saying he was “perturbed at his constantly fighting with Lebanon”. Trump’s main goal for ending the war is to rid Iran of any nuclear weapons, which he says, they have agreed to. Oil prices are currently under $100 per barrel amid hopes that an agreement can soon be reached and the Strait of Hormuz can reopen once again.

Artists from around the world will descend on Listowel next week for a four-day Celtic Arts festival, featuring lectures, exhibitions, workshops and live performances which will celebrate both traditional and contemporary Celtic art.
The festival will run from June 11 to June 14 and is ran by the Kerry Writers’ Museum. The event coincides with the International Day of Celtic Art (9 June), an initiative that began as an online community in 2000 and has since grown into a global network of artists and enthusi-
asts, with previous in-person gatherings held in New York and Downpatrick. Local contributors including stonemason Darren Enright & artist Sean Lynch will be joined by visiting artists from across Ireland, the UK, Europe, North America and as far afield as Australia and Hawaii, positioning Listowel as a focal point for Celtic artistic practice. Event organiser Stephen Rynne describes Listowel as “the world capital of modern Celtic art,” citing the town’s long association with artists working in historically informed styles. Local examples include the renowned stuccowork of Pat McAuliffe

Last week, we couldn’t believe our luck as we basked in the ultimate summer sunshine.
Temperatures soared past our wildest dreams, there were trips to the beach, ice-cream cones and lots of summer fun. However, we were brought back to reality again this week as the rain and cold returned. Unfortunately, the forecast suggests that the unsettled conditions are set to continue for the next few days. Today will be cloudy and wet, with widespread outbreaks of rain throughout the day. Saturday morning is also expected to be damp and overcast, although conditions should improve later in the afternoon with some sunny spells developing. Sunday will see early sunny spells in the east will give way to cloudier and wet conditions with rain becoming widespread, turning heavy at times. So, while there might be a little bit of sun at times, it looks like it will rain a lot over the weekend. Word of advice to the wise, don’t pack away those winter clothes just yet!!
and the legacy of acclaimed 20th-century artist Michael O’Connor, whose work is held at Kerry Writers’ Museum. A central feature of the weekend will be a free public exhibition showcasing work by participating artists alongside pieces from the Celtic Revival period. The exhibition will also include a rare public display of the Book of Ballykinlar, created by internees during the War of Independence and presented with the support of the Irish Military Archives, marking the manuscript’s first public viewing.

Over 4,000 drivers were caught speeding over the June Bank Holiday weekend, according to figures released by An Garda Siochana.
A Garda Roads Policing Operation took place from May 28 until June 2, in which a total of 187 people were arrested for driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol. After five days of the operation, there have been three fatal road traffic collisions on our roads. The total number of fatalities on Irish roads to date this year is 72. Throughout this Roads Policing Operation, Gardaí are conducting both statutory Mandatory Intoxicant
Testing and regular, high-visibility policing checkpoints. In this period, more than 400 drivers were detected for holding a mobile phone or not wearing a seatbelt. Motorists are reminded to always drive within the speed limit. Gardai are reminding motorists to always ways wear a seatbelt and never use a mobile phone when driving. Keep distractions out of the vehicle and give your full attention to the road. Walking home or cycling under the influence of alcohol or drugs puts all road users at risk. Cyclists and pedestrians should stay visible and always observe their surroundings.

Irish shoppers will face extra charge for purchases outside of EU
Irish consumers will be hit with an extra charge when shopping online from retailers outside of the European Union. These changes to online shopping will come into effect from July 1.
The new rule will see a €3 customs duty applied to packages arriving from nonEU countries, increasing the price for customers across the bloc. The customs charge will apply to goods that cost below €150. If all items in the package are different, they will each incur a cost of €3, meaning a package different items could incur multiple customs charges. Revenue provided an example on their

pect legendary tracks from artists including The Police, Steve Winwood, Sheryl Crow, Shania Twain, Coldplay, Matchbox Twenty, Tina Turner and, of course, Bryan Adams himself. Bryan Adams spoke about his upcoming show: “"I enjoy it cause there's lots of stories, it gets me a chance to reminisce about what what's happened over the years and there's some funny antidotes and little bits and bobs that happen, that songs are inspired.” Bryan Adams remains one of the most recognisable and respected names in music worldwide, with a career spanning decades and countless global hits. Renowned as one of the most exciting live performers in the world, his enduring popularity continues to attract generations of fans.

Consumers are advised to check the websites terms and conditions before proceeding. These changes were agreed by EU counties back in December 2025.
Galway footballer Seán Fitzgerald is a primary school teacher and has a big following online, regularly making videos on the social media platform Tiktok. Fitzy made his Love Island debut on Monday night, following weeks of speculation that he would enter the villa. A couple of weeks ago, rumours began circulating that he left the Galway panel to join the UK reality show, however nothing was confirmed until the casting was announced on social media last week. In the first episode, Seán aka Fitzy, which is his nickname, coupled up with detective Lola. He also caught the eye of Liverpool lass Robyn, who also wanted to couple up with him

in the first episode. While we are only a couple of days into the series, a day is like a week in the villa, and anything can happen. He might not be the only Irish person in the villa this year. It’s been rumoured that Irish influencer Charleen Murphy will also appear on the show, however nothing has been confirmed yet. The series is set to last for 6 weeks, and we hope Fitzy can remain until the end.

A strong contingent of Killarney and District Motor Club members are heading north for the Wilton Recycling Donegal International Rally from June 19-21.
Three Kerry co-drivers feature in the top eight seeds. Leading the field at number one is Noel O'Sullivan, alongside Derry's Callum Devine in a Skoda Fabia RS Rally2, as they chase their fourth consecutive Donegal victory. Shane Buckley starts at number seven alongside David Kelly in another Fabia RS Rally2. The Circuit of Ireland winners take confidence from a third-place finish at the Rally of the Lakes
in May. Ger Conway reunites with Wales' Meirion Evans in a Toyota GR Yaris Rally2, aiming for another Donegal podium after a strong run in Carlow.
In the modified category, Rob Duggan and John McCarthy, in their Ford Escort Mk2, are fresh from overall victory at the Rally of the Lakes. Fellow Escort driver Colin O'Donoghue, partnered by Donegal’s Evan Macbride, marks his first outing since the Killarney Historic Rally. In Class RC3, championship leaders Richard O'Lone and Killarney co-driver Elaine Ní Shé look to defend their Tarmac points lead in a Ford Fiesta Rally3.

Organisers of the Killarney Classic Tour have issued an updated format for the event taking place on Saturday June 27.
Following a survey of drivers already entered, the scheduled Gala Dinner has been removed from the programme. Entrants indicated a preference for a more relaxed evening, allowing time for drinks and chats in the Chestnut Tree Bar at the Gleneagle Hotel, with the option to eat at their own choice of time in the adjacent restaurant. Consequently, the entry fee has been reduced to €250 to reflect this cost reduction.
Entries remain open until Friday June 12, but the field is strictly capped at a maximum of 60 cars to avoid inconvenience to residents and other road users. Secure overnight car and trailer parking is available for crews arriving on Friday, though Friday attendance is not compulsory. All participating cars must be parked in the pre-start holding area at the Gleneagle Hotel before 10.15 am on Saturday morning. Sign-on will take place in the Chestnut Tree Bar, where road books will be distributed. Cars will depart the start

at one-minute intervals, with the first vehicle away at 11.01 am.
The non-competitive route includes runs in both directions over iconic stages such as Molls Gap, Kilmakillogue, and the Healy Pass. It also features a single run over a version of Cods Head that has not been used since the Circuit of Ireland in the 1970s. The designated lunch stop will be at the Castletownbere Golf Club. While the tour is entirely non-compet-
itive with no penalties for early or late arrivals, the road book will provide guidance times for specific landmarks to prevent the field from bunching or spreading out too widely. The event is designed to give crews the opportunity to drive classic stages made famous by the Circuit of Ireland and the Rally of the Lakes. Preference is given to suitably detuned rally cars or replicas, but anyone without one can participate in any road-legal car,
subject to space.

A test of road skills at Caragh Lake, Glencar, Co Kerry, as the biking fraternity arrive early in Killarney for the annual Ireland BikeFest 2026, which takes place from 29th–31st May. The festival will welcome thousands of bikers and visitors to the town for a weekend of live music, ride-outs, entertainment and biking culture across the June Bank Holiday weekend.
Killarney officially marked the 20th anniversary of the landmark 2006 European H.O.G.™ Rally over the June Bank Holiday weekend as Ireland BikeFest 2026 returned to the town.
What began as a one-off event two decades ago established an enduring relationship between Killarney and the international biking community, leading to the launch of BikeFest in 2007. Since then, it has grown into Ireland’s largest free open motorcycle and music festival.
"Twenty years ago, Killarney fell head-
over-wheels in love with the biking community," said Patrick O’Donoghue, Chairman of Ireland BikeFest. "There was something electric about that first rally in 2006. The town embraced it completely."
The anniversary festival featured guided ride-outs along the Wild Atlantic Way, the Custom Bike Show, live music at the Gleneagle Bike Village, and the iconic Bike Parade through the streets of Killarney.
Special photo coverage from the weekend by Valerie O’Sullivan.

Firstly Arran, coming from a footballing background, did this have any influence or help early with your career in any way?
‘’I had my Dad, Colin, I would’ve seen my dad playing when I was younger, and all I wanted to do was play football and looking up to him and thankfully I’ve been able to do that so far.’’
When you began your professional career with Cork City, how did they help you early as a youth, both underage and with the first team?
‘’When I was at Cork City, I came up playing academy football and they had a good structure and they were bringing young players up into the first team, and luckily enough I got a chance two or three years ago and I’d like to think I took it well. I played with Cork going all the way up in the academy, and I came up through the academy teams. There’s a

good kind of pathway into the first team, so yeah, I kind of got into the first team when I was 17 or 18 and luckily, I played a few games when I was 18 or 19, and we won’t the league that year.’’
Before joining Kerry, did you have any other clubs you considered joining, and if so why?
‘’No, I just focused on the team I was at and when the opportunity came up to join Kerry and play more football, I couldn’t say no to it.’’
When you first came to Kerry FC, what
did you want to achieve?
‘’I just wanted to play as much games as possible and help the team as much as possible and get better with the more games I play, and there’s a great thing going on in Kerry and we’re only building to get better and better, so it was exciting.’’
Playing as a central midfielder you have somewhat control and vision of the pitch and players’ positions. What do you believe is so important about your role?
‘’Playing midfield it’s probably a very crucial position on the pitch, attacking and defending you need you do a bit of both, and you’re the joining between the defenders and attackers so you need to always be on the ball, looking at who’s around you, creating space for yourself and trying to chip in as much as you can, helping with the defenders and attackers as well.’’
When you made your professional debut, what did it mean to you?
‘’As a kid all you want to do is play football and everyone has that dream, and making my debut, I was very nervous before-hand, but as the game went on you kind of forget about the nerves and they just go away and kind of drive you on, but it was just a dream come true.’’
Scoring your first goal for Kerry against Cork side, Leeds AFC, was probably an incredible moment for you. Describe to me what it meant to you.
‘’Yeah obviously I don’t score much goals, so being able to chip in with a goal is something I’ve actually always wanted to do. I haven’t scored much goals in my career, but it’s a good feeling when you score a goal to be able to help out the team in any sort of way.’’
Finally, Arran, is there anything football has taught you?
‘’Yeah, it’s helped me grow up, it’s helped me to be strong, and you kind of have to look out for yourself sometimes and when things aren’t going right or they’re going wrong, you need to keep on going.”

An emergency medical card is a medical card that is issued without a means test in certain emergency situations. Who can get an emergency medical card?
You can get an emergency medical card if you:
• Have a terminal illness and have been told you have 24 months or less to live or
• Are receiving end-of-life treatment or
• Need urgent ongoing care and urgently need a medical card
How do you apply?
Only a healthcare professional can apply for an emergency medical card for you. They must send a detailed medical report with an application form including your diagnosis, planned treatment and the prognosis (outlook).
If you have a terminal illness and have been told you have 24 months or less to live, they only need to send a completed application form. A medical report is not required. Does it take long to process?
If you are terminally ill or are receiving end-of-life care, your medical card number will be active on the system within 24 hours of your application being processed.
You can access medical card services while you wait for your card in the post. Your medical card will never be reviewed and it will not expire. Is it different of if you need urgent ongoing care?
If you need urgent on-going care you can get a temporary medical card for 6 months
If your application is approved, your emergency medical card can be sent in the post in 10 days. However, your medical card number will be active within 24 hours of your application being processed, so you can get the care you need.
You will need to apply for a standard means-tested medical card before your emergency medical card expires. The HSE will write to you to remind you to do this.
Who can apply for the Drugs Payment Scheme?
You must be living in Ireland and intend to live here for a minimum of one year (ordinarily resident). If you have a medical card you should have reduced prescription charges and so you are not eligible for the Drug Payment Scheme. The scheme is based on the monthly cost of prescription drugs, medicines and certain appliances for you and:
• Your spouse or partner
• Your children if they are aged under 18 (or under 23 if in full-time education)
• A family member with a physical or intellectual disability or mental illness who cannot maintain themselves fully. You need to include a medical report for the family member who cannot maintain themselves.
How does the Drugs Payment Scheme work?
After you register for the scheme, you will get a plastic swipe card for each person named on the registration form. You should show this card whenever you collect your medication or appliances from the pharmacy. You should use the same pharmacy in a month to avoid paying more than the maximum €80. You do not have to register with a pharmacy for the scheme.
The HSE Primary Care Reimbursement Service provides a list of medicines or aids provided under the Drugs Pay-

How to claim a refund for amounts over the threshold
If you use two or more pharmacies in one month you may spend over the maximum threshold of €80. If this happens you can then apply for a refund of the amount you spent above the €80 threshold. To apply for a refund, complete the refund claim form which you can get from your Local Health Office or local Citizens Information Office, or call 0818 22 44 78. Post the completed claim form to the address given on the form. You can check the status of your application for a refund at drugspayment.ie.
How to apply for the Drug Payment Scheme?
You can apply for the Drugs Payment Scheme online at mydps.ie. You can download a form from the HSE website or pick one up from your local Health Office or Citizens Information Centre. RIORDAN

With loving thought we remember a wonderful Mom and Nan Chris Dennehy Kilbrean, Killarney.
An angel lived among us
He was born on the 27th of January, 1921 at Crookstown, Co. Cork.
A gift from God above
She showered us with kindness And shared with us her love.
In September 1948 he came to the Franciscan Novitiate in Killarney. He made his Solemn Profession on September 8th 1952.
On the 7th of June 1986, feast of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, he entered eternal life. A humble man with a big heart, he enjoyed the music of life.
She cherished every moment With the man who was her life Walking hand in hand together Facing life with all its strife.
She loved her children dearly Each one a different way Nestled close within her heart Though, now, she’s far away.
“Sing to the Lord, sing to the music of harps, and to the sound of many Instruments”. Ps. 98
She’s gone to live with Jesus But, she’s here with us, today Smiling down on every one of us And telling us she’s OK.
A mother holds her children’s hands for a little while, but their hearts forever.

Following their difficult 10-point defeat to Donegal a fortnight ago, Kerry will be looking to get their 2026 All-Ireland challenge back on the road when they face Kildare in Round 2B of the championship next Saturday.
The Kingdom were paired with the Lilywhites in the losers’ round in Tuesday’s draw. The situation for the defending champions is simple from here on in: lose one more game and the season is over.
The crunch fixture has been set for Saturday, June 13 at 5.30pm in the redeveloped St Conleth’s Park in Newbridge. The ground now holds 15,000 people.
The bad news for Kerry fans who are not able to attend is that the game will not be shown live on RTÉ or GAA+.
Kerry boss Jack O’Connor is no stranger to that part of the world. He managed Kildare for two seasons in 2020 and 2021, before stepping away from that role to return to Kerry for a third stint

in charge ahead of the 2022 campaign. Head coach Cian O’Neill, who is himself a Kildare native, also previously managed the county between 2016 and 2019. Kildare arrive in Round 2A on the back of a heavy defeat to Galway (0-17 to 3-21). They exited Leinster at the semi-final stage at the hands of eventual winners Westmeath. Earlier this year they were relegated from Division 2 of the National League having won just one of their seven matches. Their current manager is Brian Flanagan.
Kerry’s last trip to Kildare was in the opening round the league in 2022. The match, which was Jack O’Connor’s first game back in charge of his home county, ended in a draw.
The last championship encounter between the sides (in 2018) resulted in a 12-point win for Kerry at the Fitzgerald Stadium.
The other Round 2B fixtures are Cavan v Dublin, Monaghan v Roscommon and Derry v Meath.
In 2A (the winners’ round) it’s Donegal v Cork, Galway v Westmeath, Tyrone v Mayo and Louth v Armagh. All matches will be played across the weekend of June 13/14.

I know, I know. No Ireland = no party. After that devastating penalty shootout loss to Czechia in the playoffs, the very thought of the World Cup is like a dagger to the heart for Irish football supporters. Sadly, it’s going ahead without us with the opening match between Mexico and South Africa kicking off next Thursday. Our instinct may be to ignore the whole thing and pretend it’s not even happening but with 104 games in store across 39 days, and with RTÉ covering every second of the action, avoiding it won’t exactly be easy.
Having said that, if you go to bed at a reasonable hour each night then you’ll sleep through a fair chunk of the action. Due to the time difference between here and the Americas, around half of the games will be kicking off at 11pm or later, so most people won’t be falling

into watching many of those fixtures by accident.
Before Ireland’s fate was sealed, the fact that the tournament is now set to feature 48 teams was a positive. More room for us. Now, however, our perspective may have shifted. With eight of the twelve third-place teams advancing to the knockout rounds, the group phase involves far less jeopardy than before.
Yes, it’s great that Curacao and Uzbekistan and Cape Verde get to compete at their first ever World Cup. But there is also a danger that some of the weaker teams will be like lambs to the slaughter, and that certain games could turn out to be non-events. This could be offset by a fairytale or two, of course. And by ‘fairytale’ I mean one of the smaller nations might win a game
or advance to a stage they never felt possible. Underdogs simply don’t win World Cups, and it would be a miracle if a brand new winner is crowned at the final in New Jersey.
The other bad news is that we will see Donald Trump. And there’s more: we will see Gianni Infantino. We will see the latter sucking up to the former, and it will make us physically ill. The fact that Trump couldn’t care less about soccer or “Johnny”, as the US President seems to call him, makes Infantino’s sycophancy even more cringeworthy. And it gets even worse: we will see Ronaldo – and far earlier than we should. The Portuguese superstar was red carded in that 2-0 defeat against Ireland in Dublin and so was due to serve a two-match suspension at the World Cup, but he was pardoned. It’s corruption plain and sim-
ple – one rule for the elite and another rule for the rest of us – but this is FIFA, and this is Trump’s America, so what else should we expect?
Perhaps even more egregious than all of that, or at least on a par with some if it, is that for this World Cup FIFA have decided to bring in mandatory midgame water breaks, one in each half, IRRESPECTIVE OF WEATHER CONDITIONS ON THE DAY. And if television companies choose to broadcast adverts during these scheduled water/commercial breaks? Why, that would be an unintended consequence, of course. Welcome to America.
Hopefully between the ads we will witness some interesting storylines. Can US immigrant Lionel Messi repeat his incredible heroics from four years ago when he finally got his hands on that famous golden trophy? Can his heir apparent Lamine Yamal return from injury and help European champions Spain go back-to-back at major tournaments? And what of England – will their tears sustain us for another summer? Or will Declan Rice become the first ever Irishman to win the World Cup?
If that comes to pass on July 19, I think we all might be having an early night.

ALL-IRELAND U20 FOOTBALL FINAL
Kerry 0 - 21 | Tyrone 1 - 10
CROKE PARK
The U21 football Championship ran from 1964 to 2017. It changed to U20 in 2018. Cork lead the way with 12 titles, followed closely by Kerry on 11 titles, won in 1964, 1973, 1975, 1976, 1977, 1990, 1995, 1996, 1998, 2008, and now 2026. Kerry also lost eight such finals.
No, not again. Tyrone, Kerry’s bogey team, led1-7 to 0-2 after 20 minutes in the U20 All-Ireland final at Croke Park. Tyrone seemed to be on target for three in a row.
However, Kerry got to grips with the challenge. They forced a 16-point swing on the scoreboard. Man of the Match Evan Boyle led the charge from midfield, scoring the first of four points in a row before half time. Gearóid White fired five important points, including two two-pointers. Kerry still trailed 1-8 to 0-9 at half-time but blazed the second half scoring 5 points in the first 20 minutes of that magical second half. The final 10 minutes was all Kerry, scoring six points without reply

from Tyrone, who have been Kerry’s nemesis at underage levels for too long.
Kerry scorers on the day: Gearóid White 0-5 (2 tpf, 0-1f), Tomás Kennedy 0-4 (1 s/l, 0-1m, 0-2f), Evan Boyle 0-3 (1 tp), Daniel Kirby 0-3, Eoin O’Flaherty 0-1, Ronan Carroll 0-1, Pa Walsh 0-1, Killian Dennehy 0-1, Jack Joy 0-1, Jack O’Sullivan 0-1.
Kerry did make some changes from the official team released by the Kerry County Board, hence some high numbers on the geansaís of the starting 15.
The Kerry team lined out as follows: 1. Kacper Robak, 2. Michael Lynch, 3. Gearóid Evans, 4. Dara Stack, 5. Eoin O’Flaherty, 6. Aodhna Ó Beaglaioch. 7. Pa Walsh, 8. Daniel Kirby, 9. Evan Boyle, 18. Seán Ó Cuinn, 11. Gearóid White, 10. Jack O’Sullivan, 13. Ronan Carroll, 14. Tomás Kennedy, 15. Paddy Lane (Captain). Subs: Killian Dennehy
(for Lynch (24), Dara Hogan for Lane (33); Jack Joy for Carroll (45), Barry Fitzsimons, Paudie Finnucane, Isaac Brosnan, Mark O’Carroll, John Curtin, Adam Byrne, Ben Kelliher.
Players from local clubs include Kacper Robac, Mark O’Carroll, Adam Byrne, Ben Kelliher (all Crokes) and Dara Stack (Kilcummin).
There was no joy for the Kerry hurlers in the Christy Ring Cup, never showing their form as per match favourites, well beaten throughout by Derry 3-24 to 3-19. They trailed throughout and did make a great burst near the end, yielding two Owen Maunsell goals, but it was too little, too late as Derry made up for the heartbreak of losing four of the last five finals. Local player Tom Doyle had a great year
with this team, winning promotion to Division 1 B for next year.
THE WEDGE
The real surprise team this year is Westmeath. Coláiste Mhuire Mullingar won their first-ever Hogan Cup (All-Ireland Senior A Colleges Football) a few months ago, defeating Tralee CBS and that was savoured by Westmeath native but Killarney domiciled James Arthur. When I spoke to him about that unexpected win over a Kerry college, he responded with a one-liner ‘and it won’t be the only silverware we’ll win this year’. Are you joking, Wedge? ‘Mark my words’ he replied with that a wink and elbow language of delight.
When Tuesday’s draw was revealed, he replied, ‘What did I tell you? and we are Leinster champions. I had that for me buddy Bros (Ger Brosnan). We were sailing v Cavan, but they came back at us. It was like being dormie 4 at the Chapel and then your opponent starting to win ,15,16, 17, 18 to go down the 19th. You know yourself it takes a great player to win it on the 19th. Ask McIllroy all about it. Westmeath are just like that’.
Surely, Wedge, away to Galway in Salthill, all the odds favour Galway.
‘We’re on a roll, just like the year with Páidí Ó Sé, and I’ll go up to Mullingar.’
For the Scratch Cup?
Football I’m talking about today. The whole county (of Westmeath) is on a high, so I’ll join them and go to Salthill. Come on
x
Westmeath.’
That’s the confidence that made him such a great golfer who thrived in matchplay. There is only one Wedge, and he has the bragging rights for ‘The Speak’ and elsewhere.
Apologies for the wrong weekend indicated in last week’s column for the naming of the Legion Grounds. Tomorrow is a big day for the Legion club when the grounds at Derreen will be named after Johnny Culloty, one of its greatest players and clubmen who gave a lifetime of service to the club in so many capacities. He was also a great Kerry star both in football and hurling, an all-round sportsman of rowing, basketball, golf, and snooker. Johnny mastered them all. Tomorrow’s event is part of a great weekend of celebration beginning today (Friday) with the Johnny Culloty Golf Classic at O'Mahony's Point.
Many readers have asked for the Crokes and Legion teams who played in the Under 12 East Kerry final on 24 May 197, the evening Timmy Keogh passed away while watching his sons Francis and Timmy Junior play. The teams were… Legion: David Randles (capt), Gerry Fleming, John Doona, Jimy Carton, Peter & Kevin Murphy, Bernie McDonagh, PJ O’Leary, Denis & John Greene, Tim Healy, Pat Culloty, Kieran O’Connor, Freddy Murphy, Michael McSweeney. In charge of the Legion team were Pat Healy, Mickey Culloty, and Bernie O’Connor.

Dr Crokes: Peter Fleming, John and Pádraig O’Shea, Denis Coleman, Connie Murphy, Pat O’Shea, Francis and Timmy Keogh, Vince Casey, Tim Coffey, Eamonn O’Brien, Aidan Kiely, Pádraig Daly, Timmy Horgan, Séamus Cronin, David Sheehan, Pat O'Brien, Denis Buckley, Neil Kiely, JJ O’Mahony, Gerard and Pat O’Brien. In charge of the team were Jackie Looney, club chairman, Paddy Bomber O’Shea, Tadhgie Fleming and Seán Kavanagh.
Back in October 2025, 51,000 fans paid into Croke Park for a run of the mill URC game between Munster and Leinster. Last Saturday for a sudden death knockout vital URC semi-final, against the Lions from Johannesburg, a mere 9.000 fans bothered to turn up in the Aviva. Whatever about the casual supporters, where were the reputed 15,000 Leinster season ticket holders who had paid their money up front?
A lesson could be learned from Gaelic football and the Dubs. The great six-ina-row All Ireland winning teams of just 5 years ago did not evolve intricate boring tactics or game plans. As illustrated in Croke Park on Sunday the Dubs suffered yet another defeat against lowly rated opponents. More importantly their fans had deserted them and their famous Hill 16 was almost totally bereft of spectators.
That apart, Leinster should beat Stormers at home tomorrow in the semifinal of the URC. Will it be a full house for the final? Highly unlikely.
Paul Murphy, ever helpful and efficient LGFA PRO, reminds me that the Kerry senior LGFA team, newly crowned Munster champions after that hectic win over Waterford, begin their quest for further glory in Tralee on Sunday next.
Their schedule is as follows. Sunday 7th June - Kerry v Tipperary - 2pm Austin Stack Park. Saturday 13th June - Kildare v Kerry - 3pm Venue TBC. Saturday 20th/Sunday 21st June - Kerry have a bye. The quarter-final draw will take place after the completion for Round 3. Further good news for supporters who may not be able to attend the games is that TG4 confirmed a five-year sponsorship and broadcast extension of Ladies Gaelic Football Championships. The landmark new agreement will bring TG4’s sponsorship and much-appreciated broadcast partnership with the LGFA through to the conclusion of the 2032 season.
Meanwhile, the Kerry U14s won All-Ireland gold in Kiltoom, Roscommon, defeating Down by 1-8 to 1-5. They made up for last year’s loss and were deserving winners after a magnif-

icent game of football. They led 1-4 to 0-3 at half-time, thanks to that Niamh Ní Shé goal.
Down did fight back, but the young Kerry girls showed remarkable composure, and two late points from Shanahan secured the title for her side after an entertaining game.
Top scorer for Kerry was Southern Gael’s sharpshooter Amyrose Shanahan 1-5 (3f), Girls from local clubs include - Rathmore: Sinead Hurley, Aisling Fenton, Clodagh O’Connor. Dr Crokes: Elizabeth Brosnan, Erica Moloney: Legion: Regan O’Shea, Clodagh Hegarty. Glenflesk: Shauna O’Riordan. What a great day it was for the Killarney Brosnan family. Centre forward was Elizabeth, the same position held by her father, Eoin Brosnan, All-Ireland winner with Kerry in 2004, 2006 and 2007. Her older sister Amy already won with the Kerry earlier this year.
For the record, the Kerry U14 team: S O’Riordan; É Dolan, A O’Keeffe, R Fleming; S Hurley, O Lyons, N Ní Shé; A Fenton, L O’Connell; A Deenihan, E Brosnan, C Coffey; A O’Shea, A Shanahan, É Moynihan. Subs: E Moloney, S Curran, R O’Shea, T McGill, A Deenihan, C Coffey. C. Hegarty.
St Paul’s Basketball Club are very proud that Clodagh O’Sullivan has been selected to play for the Irish U17 team in the upcoming Four Nations tournament in Glasgow.
Chairman Paul Sheehan, on behalf of the club, made a contribution towards Clodagh’s expenses and spoke of the pride and delight amongst the club members at her selection.
“Aoife O’Leary was her first coach and from the first moment Clodagh exhibited a quick ability to learn,” Paul said. “Allied to that she put in huge hours of practice, something I saw first-hand myself, when I helped Aoife with the team. More recently Cormac O’Donoghue will tell you the same thing: fast learner and great worker. It's a great achievement,
one which she thoroughly deserves.”
Her progress through the club has seen her train and line out with the Women’s Super League and it is envisaged that she will be the cornerstone of that team for years to come.
The Irish squad assemble and depart Dublin on Friday, June 12 and will face England on Saturday morning. Later in the day Wales will provide the opposition with the final game against the hosts Scotland on Sunday morning.
“We wish Clodagh and the Irish squad the very best of luck in the Four Nations Tournament and we have no doubt she will do herself, her family, her club and her country proud,” Paul added. Clodagh is a daughter of former Glenflesk footballer Timmy and Maura O’Sullivan.

The 5th annual Killarney Club 7s event took place over the Bank Holiday Weekend. It was a fantastic event attended by all ages with football, music, food and kids entertainment aplenty.
Off the pitch, thousands of festival goers were entertained throughout the day by local musical talents. Renowned UK DJ/ Producer Sigala headlined on the Saturday night and Irish band Blessed headlined on Sunday.
On the football front, Spa GAA won the Men’s Cup, beating Kilbride GAA (Meath) in the final on a scoreline of 4-10 to 3-9.

She will team up with fellow new signing Paula Reus Piza and the returning Maisie Burnham as coach James Fleming looks to build on a strong two year showing in the league.
Angelina had a stellar college career where she stood out for both South
Dakota and Denver. She was in Denver from 2022 to 2025 where she made 87 appearances and averaged 7.6 points per game.
She then moved onto South Dakota where her form really flourished. Helping them make the Women’s National Invitational Tournament she performed to an elite level, making the All-Tournament team. She started all 36 games and just like her time in Denver she led the
season in assists to turnovers ratio. A native of San Diego the 5’5” guard will be hoping to bring her creativity to the fore in her first professional season. Coach James Fleming is very enthusiastic about the signing. “Having seen the standard in the Women's Super League the last two seasons and scouting Angelina, we've no doubt she will bring us the dimension we need to drive things on further.”

U13 PREMIER PLAY OFF: Killarney Celtic 4-4 St Brendan's Park aet. St Brendan's Park won on penalties. After an enthralling league playoff Celtic just came up short against St Brendan's Park. Celtic hit the front 3 times in normal time with St Brendan's Park responding. Again in extra time Celtic went ahead and just when it seemed that the title was destined for Killarney a last second equaliser took the game to penalties where St Brendan's Park were victorious. Well done to our players and coaches who contributed to an amazing league finale.
CONDOLENCES: It was with profound sadness that Killarney Celtic learned of the passing of Ewan MacIndoe. The club extends its deepest sympathies to his parents David and Louise, his sister Amber and extended family. The club would like to thank the members, players, coaches and volunteers who represented the club at Ewan's removal and funeral. Killarney Celtic extends its condolences to our U13 coach James Murphy and family following the passing of Jame's brother-in-law. Killarney Celtic would like to thank Killarney Athletic for their cooperation and support with regard to the cancellation of the KDL Premier A Final last Sunday.
U15 DIVISION 1 LEAGUE: Tralee Dynamos 1-3 Mastergeeha. Goal Scorer: Anna Lenihan (3). Our fantastic U15 girls were crowned Division 1 League Champions after securing a crucial and hard-fought victory away to Tralee Dynamos on Wednesday evening. Having lost to the same opponents only a few weeks ago, the girls knew they would have to significantly raise their performance levels this time around. Playing against a strong wind in the opening half, they suffered an early setback when Dynamos struck with an excellent goal. The girls in red and black dug deep, absorbed sustained pressure and continued to threaten on the break. One such counterattack resulted in captain Anna Lenihan being fouled in the box, earning Mastergeeha a penalty. Anna stepped up confidently and coolly slotted home to level the game at 1-1. That was the way it stayed at half time. With the breeze now at their backs and knowing only a win would secure the title, Mastergeeha started the second half strongly. It wasn’t long before captain
Anna Lenihan struck again, producing a brilliant dribble through the defence before finishing excellently to make it 2-1. Now full of confidence and momentum, the girls pushed on and Anna completed a superb hat-trick with another excellent finish to put Mastergeeha firmly in control. Dynamos threw everything at the girls in the closing 15 minutes, but the Mastergeeha defence stood tall and showed tremendous determination to protect the lead. In goal, Melissa O’Connor had a tremendous game and made some vital saves throughout. In defence, Michelle Doolan, Isla Cronin and Evie Guerin were simply unbreakable. Midfielders Ava Brosnan, Lily O’Leary, Anabelle Casey, Chloe O’Sullivan and Sophie Moynihan worked tirelessly throughout, while up front captain Anna Lenihan, Ella Kate Piggott and Julia Casey were brilliant all evening. The entire squad were also ably supported from the sidelines by the injured Lucy McCarthy. The final whistle was greeted with huge roars from the large travelling Mastergeeha support as captain Anna Lenihan lifted the league trophy on behalf of her teammates. A superb finish to the season for this outstanding group of players. Thanks to Tralee Dynamos for a great sporting contest and to Tom O’Sullivan for officiating. The victory also brings the curtain down on a remarkable season for girls soccer in Mastergeeha, with an incredible haul of silverware achieved across all age groups — a testament to the huge work being done throughout the club and the fantastic talent coming through the club.
U12 DIVISION 1 - MASTERGEEHA B: Our U12s finished their league campaign at home to a strong Iveragh A side putting in a great performance full of heart and work rate from our boys. Iveragh showed why they’re pushing for the title, but our lads matched them all over the pitch and were unlucky to come out the wrong side of a tight 1–0. Massive credit to the whole squad for the performance and the progress they’ve made this season. Best of luck to Iveragh in their final games, and thanks to the referee for a well-handled match. Captain: Jake Kelly. POTM: Zach Moynihan.

EWAN MAC INDOE: As a club and as a community, we were deeply saddened by the terrible news of Ewan MacIndoe's passing. Ewan was a popular member of our Senior B squad and recently battled through a back injury to tog out with his Legion clubmates and friends. Hugely popular on the pitch and in the dressing room with his teammates Ewan was always a pleasure to coach from his academy days through juvenile football to the senior ranks. While club members may feel powerless to help Ewan's family and friends at this dark time of incalculable loss, we want them to know - especially David, Louise & Amber - that Killarney Legion will cherish Ewan's memory and will help you however we can. As a mark or respect to our player and neighbour, Legion's pitches remained closed over last weekend. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam. Rest in Peace, Ewan.

SENIOR HURLING LEAGUE: Dr. Crokes 1:20 Crotta O'Neill's 0:10. Since our defeat to Lady's Walk at the end of April, our Hurler's have secured convincing away wins against Lixnaw and Kilgarvan. This past week, we hosted Crotta O'Neill's. Due to Crotta's numbers deficit, the match was played as 13-a-side. We opened the scoring immediately with Mark Heffernan, Jack O'Riordan and Kevin Landers on target from play. Brian O'Connor's goal effort was well blocked by Crotta's full-back however, shortly after, he teamed up with his brother, Kieran, who made sure with a powerful strike to the net from 20 yards. We had a commanding lead at the water-break of 1-05 to 0-02. Following resumption, Crotta got more into the game but left a number of chances after them, including a goal chance which was blasted wide. Our defence was flawless, using the additional space wisely and not committing any unnecessary fouls throughout the game. HT Dr. Crokes 1-09 Crotta O'Neill's 0-04. It was much the same for the second halfMark Heffernan's pinpoint accuracy from frees kept our scoreboard ticking over; Brian O'Connor utilised his brilliant pace to score from play; Nathaniel Doncel marshalled mid-field, and the entire defence worked tirelessly in the dead heat to limit Crotta's scoring. This match also gave us the opportunity to run the complete bench, who all contributed effectively. CROKES CUBS AND ACADEMY take place every Saturday. Hurling from 10am11am and football From 11:15am-12:15pm. All new members welcome.

OCEAN TO CITY: Last weekend Flesk Valley sent a well-seasoned crew across the county bounds to compete in the Ocean to City race (An Rás Mór). The crew of Peter O'Sullivan, Colm O'Súillebháin, Karol Kelly and Donal Kelly, was superbly piloted by Carrigaline-native Paul Burke. Paul brought his local knowledge to bear with great effect, navigating the shortest course possible and educating the captive Kerry men about all things Cork! In beautiful conditions the lads navigated the course with style and apparently a little effort, from Crosshaven to Cobh, through Monkstown and Lough Mahon, all the way to the finish line in Cork city. Thanks to Colm O'Súillebháin for organising, Karol Kelly for towing the boat, Breda Burke for logistical support and the travelling supporters who cheered the crew home. The crew prepared for this event with some marathon spins on Lough Lein over the past few weeks and are very grateful to Orlaith O'Sullivan, Caoimhe Kelly, Aodhagán O'Sullivan and Noel Prendergast for their coxing assistance. Thanks also to Fossa Rowing Club for the use of their trailer at the weekend.

MUNSTER: The continued growth of female participation at Killarney Judo Club was highlighted at the recent Interprovincial Championships, where seven of the club's ten Munster representatives were girls. Emily O'Donoghue De Vries, Michelle Walsh, Danielle Walsh and Clíona Hegarty were also part of the Minor Girls team that earned silver. The strong representation reflects the growing number of female athletes progressing through the ranks at Killarney Judo Club and competing successfully at provincial level. Alongside the girls' achievements, Devon Koen represented the Minor Boys team, Saba Kandaleki was part of the gold medal-winning Pre-Cadet squad, and James Maher earned silver while competing up an age grade in the Junior division. The championships marked another successful outing for Killarney Judo Club, with its athletes making a significant contribution to Munster's
success across several age categories.
