KCC agrees transfer of Sara Lee site to Kerry ETB

The members of Kerry County Council have agreed to transfer the former Sara Lee factory site in Killarney to the Kerry Education and Training Board.

Kerry County Council owns the three-hectare (7.7acre) site at Park Road, which was purchased by Killarney Town Council in 2005. The conveyance and transfer of the site to Killarney Town Council was conditional on the property being used “for the benefit of the general community of Killarney and surrounding areas.”

The disposal of the site by the Council is subject to the Intra State Disposal arrangements which require that other public bodies be given an opportunity to acquire such properties. Kerry Education and Training Board (Kerry ETB) expressed an interest in the site for the development of a new Killarney Further Education and Training Campus. The proposed development will provide a one-stop hub for skills development in Kerry, enhancing the county’s education infrastructure and bolstering economic development. The ETB aims to produce a pipeline of talent which will benefit local employers and the broader Irish economy. It will capitalise on Killarney’s strengths, such as its tourism industry, and address skills gaps.

The Valuation Office prepared a market valuation for the site and valued it at €2,375,000. The site includes the

vacant factory building and ancillary structures including offices along with a number of other smaller buildings.

Kerry Education and Training Board (Kerry ETB) welcomed the decision by Kerry County Council to proceed with the formal transfer of the site, subject to completion of due diligence requirements. In a statement, Kerry ETB said: “This decision represents an important step in the overall site acquisition process and enables Kerry ETB to advance to the next stage of the site acquisition process in line with public-sector governance and capital appraisal requirements. At this stage, Kerry ETB is progressing the preliminary business case for the long-term development of the site, in accordance with the Infrastruc-

Hospital opening remains uncertain as Q1 deadline looms

The opening of the new 130-bed Killarney Community Nursing Unit at Ballydribbeen remains shrouded in uncertainty this week, as the HSE’s self-imposed deadline of Tuesday March 31 fast approaches.

With only two working days remaining in the first quarter of the year, there are growing doubts as to whether the multi-million euro facility will be operational by the promised date. Official correspondence previously issued by the HSE stated a clear intention to have the unit open by the end of March 2026. Despite

the physical building being handed over months ago, the doors remain closed to the public and the residents of St Columbanus and the current patients at the Killarney District Hospital.

The Killarney Advertiser submitted a formal media request to the HSE South West press office earlier this week, seeking an update on the status of the project, the completion of HIQA registration, and a confirmed date for the transfer of the first residents. At the time of going to print at 4.30pm on Thursday afternoon, the HSE had failed to provide a response.

Record numbers as Streets of Killarney 5-mile race sells out

The annual Streets of Killarney 5-mile road race is officially a sellout ahead of the event on Good Friday, April 3.

Organised by Killarney Valley AC, the race has attracted a capacity field including some of Ireland's top distance runners alongside members from over 50 different athletics clubs.

Race committee leader Sinead Hickey confirmed that the event reached its registration limit early this year. The proceeds from the race are vital for the continued sustainability of the Killarney Valley AC Arena, a facility essential for the development of track and field athletics within the local school and sporting community.

Local resident and Canadian Paralympic athlete Maddie Wilson Walker (pictured)

will serve as the official race ambassador. While elite runners will lead the pack, the field is comprised of athletes of all abilities, including many local families competing against one another. The event starts at 7pm sharp on the grounds of Killarney House. Spectators are encouraged to line the route and gather at the finish line on Beech Road to support both the participants and the volunteers. The organisers have expressed their gratitude to Kerry County Council, the Gardaí, the OPW, and the local business community for their cooperation in hosting the event.

TRAFFIC RESTRICTIONS AND ROAD CLOSURES FOR GOOD FRIDAY RACE

Motorists and businesses are advised that significant traffic restrictions will be in place throughout Killarney town centre on Friday evening, 3 April, to facilitate the 5-mile road race. Closures and diversions will be enforced from 6.30pm until approximately 8.30pm.

Main Street, New Street, and High Street will be fully closed to all vehicular traffic for the duration of the event. Additionally, partial closures will be in effect on Beech Road, New Road, and Port Road. As the race course follows a route up High Street

Kelly renews call to end the biannual clock change

Kilcummin native and Fine Gael

MEP Seán Kelly has issued a fresh call to end the biannual clock change across Europe.

As clocks are set to move forward one hour this Sunday, the Kerry representative believes this should be the final time the practice occurs.

He is urging the Irish Government to use

its upcoming EU Presidency to finally break the deadlock on the issue.

Kelly has led the European Parliament’s push for this reform for nearly seventeen years. He argues that the shift to brighter evenings is something the Irish public values for mental and physical health.

According to Kelly, the "grand stretch in the evenings" lifts the mood and en-

courages outdoor activity. He described the twice-yearly switch as an outdated practice that no longer makes sense in a modern context.

The European Commission first proposed ending the change in 2018 after a public consultation showed 84 percent of 4.6 million citizens supported the move.

While the European Parliament backed the proposal in 2019, EU Member States have yet to reach a final agreement. Kelly noted that a recent push by Denmark in late 2025 failed to resolve the matter, but he believes Irish leadership can provide the necessary political will.

and turns left onto New Road and Port Road, the left-hand side of these specific roads will be cordoned off for the safety of the runners. Access will be restricted as the race exits the National Park, crosses Port Road, and completes two laps of the town circuit. The finish line will be located at the Killarney Tourist Office on Beech Road. Local residents and business owners are asked to plan their journeys accordingly and follow the directions of the Gardaí and race marshals who will be managing the junctions.

Outlet Centre's Paul Sherry’s Italian job

Accordion master Liam O’Connor and his musically gifted family joined a contingent from Killarney who were afforded the full VIP treatment in Verrès, a small town in the Aosta Valley to the north-west of Turin in Italy, during the area’s annual carnival. Killarney has struck up a very strong bond and friendship with Verrès since 2020 through Davide Mosca, a native son who grew up there before moving to Kerry to set up business as an architect.

During their stay, the Killarney party enjoyed all the colour and excitement of the historic Carnevale Verrès which is a huge hit every year.

This year Paul Sherry, an annual visitor to Verrès and manager of the Killarney Outlet Centre, was presented with the prestigious Supremus Ordo medal as a guest of honour for the four-day Mardi Gras style festival, The honour consists of a medallion bearing the local coat of arms and it is presented to those who, in the festival committee's opinion, have contributed significantly to the success of the carnival.

According to legend dating back to the 1400s, the Count and Countess left Verrès Castle to join locals in a pre-Lent village celebration and the colourful tradition has been upheld since then in the form of the Carnevale Verrès Liam O’Connor and his family played two concerts in the majestic surroundings of Verres Castle which highlighted Ireland’s incredible culture and talent to the Italian people.

The festival’s distinctive knights, costumed soldiers and drummers enjoyed a return trip and paraded through the streets of Killarney on St Patrick’s Day and they were led by the Mayor of Verres Alessandro Giovenzi.

The 57-strong party, joined by 25 close neighbours, were also accorded a civic reception by the Mayor of Killarney Cllr Martin Grady.

Sem staff gather to mark Ed O’Neill’s retirement

Staff from St Brendan’s College gathered at the Randles Court Hotel last weekend to celebrate the retirement of their colleague, Ed O’Neill.

Although Mr O’Neill officially finished his teaching duties in Physical Education and History at the end of the school year last May, his fellow teachers and friends held the formal send-off this week to mark his departure from the school.

Mr O’Neill’s career at 'The Sem' spanned

31 years, having first joined the teaching staff in 1995. Over three decades, he became a central figure in the school community, mentoring generations of students both in the classroom and on the sports field. He was widely respected by staff and pupils alike for his professional approach and his dedication to the college.

The retirement function provided an opportunity for past and present colleagues to acknowledge his significant contribution to the school since the mid-1990s.

Killarney Golf and Fishing Club becomes PGA training hub

Killarney Golf and Fishing Club has gained Professional Golfers Association (PGA) status. It is now one of only two PGA training establishments in Ireland.

The PGA Training Programme is a respected global qualification. It includes a Foundation Degree in Professional Golf Studies from the University of Birmingham. This three-year course focuses on coaching, sports science, business, and tournament play. Around 300 students from across Europe enrol each year. The addition of Killarney means year-

one and year-two trainee professionals from Ireland can complete their practical and theoretical work in Killarney. This removes the need for them to travel to the UK. The club was chosen due to its high-quality training facilities and available local accommodation.

Killarney head professional Mark Heinemann has also been named as a PGA Tutor and Assessor. He will mentor young Irish trainees through their three-year journey to becoming qualified professionals. His role will involve leading both individual and group coaching sessions.

One week to go till Good Friday walk for Kerry Hospice

There is just one week to go until the annual Good Friday charity walk in aid of the Kerry Hospice Foundation and Killarney Palliative Care.

Taking place on April 3, the event serves as a major fundraiser for local services and a time of remembrance for the community.

This year’s walk is organised in special memory of Vivien O’Shea and Sheila McGillycuddy, two well-known Killarney women, who passed away from life-limiting illnesses. The event also honours all those in the community who have lost their lives to similar conditions.

Local businessman Niall O’Sullivan has been named as the official ambassador for the 2026 walk.

Niall is the son of the late Andy O’Sullivan, a dedicated supporter of the Foundation

who passed away in November 2024.

Following the care Andy received from the palliative care team, the O’Sullivan family has continued to support the cause through various fundraising efforts.

The event will begin with registration at the Garden Restaurant, Muckross House, from 9.30am, with the walk officially getting underway at 10.30am.

While there is no set registration fee, participants are encouraged to make a voluntary bucket donation.

Following the walk, participants can enjoy complimentary tea and coffee, and there will be a raffle with a variety of prizes.

Additional home-school support for local schools

Minister for Education and Kerry TD Norma Foley has confirmed that two Killarney schools are among seven in the county set to receive additional Home School Community Liaison (HSCL) support.

Both Holy Cross Primary School and Scoil Mhuire na Mainistreach (The Monastery), both located on New Road, will benefit from the increased resources. The scheme is designed to strengthen the partnership between parents, teachers, and local family support services to improve student attendance and participation.

The HSCL programme focuses specifically on supporting families to ensure

students remain engaged with their education and reach their full potential. "I welcome confirmation of additional Home School Liaison support for seven Kerry schools," Minister Foley said. "It is vital that every student is supported to reach their full potential."

Cyclists urged to support Kerry Hospice in 2026 Ring of Kerry Cycle

The Kerry Hospice Foundation is appealing to cyclists taking part in the 2026 Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle to choose the foundation as their designated charity.

The iconic 170km event is scheduled for Saturday, July 4, and remains a vital source of funding for palliative care services across the county.

The foundation was recently confirmed as one of the six Tier 1 main beneficiaries for this year's cycle. Funds raised by participants will go directly toward a major €6.5 million expansion of the specialist palliative care inpatient unit. Work has already begun on adding five new bedrooms and enhanced family support facilities to meet the growing demand for end-of-life care in Kerry.

Since opening its 15-bed unit in 2017, the facility has consistently operated at full capacity, prompting the foundation to fast-track these latest development plans.

"Each year thousands of cyclists take on

this iconic route around the Ring of Kerry. It would be amazing if you can do so, while raising essential funds that help us provide Palliative Care and support to patients and their families throughout Kerry and beyond," a foundation spokesperson said.

"This is where we need your help. We would love it if you can cycle for us; if this isn't practical, please support us in the form of sponsorship or other direct contributions."

Registration for the event is now live at www.ringofkerrycycle.ie. When signing up, cyclists have the option to select the Kerry Hospice Foundation as their chosen beneficiary to ensure 100% of their voluntary donations go toward the local hospice project.

Seven awards for Lawlor's Cross animator at Animation Dingle

Muireann Mulvihill, a talented young animator from Lawlor’s Cross, achieved major success at the 2026 Animation Dingle Festival.

Her short film Anam, created alongside collaborator Ailbhe Fearon at IADT Dún Laoghaire, became one of the most decorated entries in the history of the prestigious event.

The film was selected from 108 international entries and went on to win seven awards out of nine nominations. The accolades included Best Irish Student, Best Writer, Best Art Direction, Best 2D Animation, Best Original Score, Best Sound Design, and the Best Irish Language

Award.

As a qualifying festival for the Student Academy Awards, the wins at Animation Dingle provide a significant platform for the Killarney native. Festival Director Maurice Galway noted the high standard of work on display, highlighting the creativity of emerging artists currently shaping the future of Irish storytelling. Muireann’s achievement follows a period of significant artistic success for Killarney natives on the global stage, including the recent Academy Award recognition for actress Jessie Buckley. This latest success at one of Europe’s leading animation festivals marks a major milestone for the Lawlor’s Cross animator as she enters the professional industry.

Muckross Garden Centre raises €12k for Kerry Cancer Support Group

Staff and customers at Muckross Garden Centre have raised a total of €12,500 for the Kerry Cancer Support Group through donations made at their miniature Christmas village.

The popular festive display, located in the Muckross Garden Restaurant, drew significant crowds and contributions over Christmas.

The Kerry Cancer Support Group, estab-

lished in 2007, provides a vital service through its Health Link Transport. Since 2010, the charity has offered free transport to cancer patients across Kerry, West Cork, and West Limerick, ensuring they can attend essential treatment at hospitals in Cork and Limerick. The donation will go directly towards maintaining these transport services, which rely heavily on community fundraising to remain free for service users.

Reigning Kerry champions Killarney Celtic FC are preparing to swap the Kingdom for Valencia this Easter as part of a major Erasmus+ Youth Mobility project.

A contingent of 30 players, coaches, and adults will travel to Spain for a weeklong programme of social, physical, and cultural activities.

This marks the second time the club has secured funding through the National Agency Léargas, following a successful exchange to Italy in 2025. This year’s partnership was forged through the family of Nando Dominguez, a Spanish

Killarney Celtic set for €50,000 Erasmus+ exchange in Spain

student who previously spent a year in Killarney as a beneficiary of the club’s youth programme.

The €50,000 project will see players from six Celtic teams, ranging from under-14 to under-17 levels, collaborate with Maristas College and local soccer club CFB Ciutat de Valencia.

"We are extremely grateful to Léargas for the training and opportunities they provided to our club to apply for this

funding strand and make this exchange a really exciting prospect," said Celtic chairman Philip O'Callaghan.

Project manager and coach Davide Mosca, who led months of digital preparation with Spanish coordinator Fernando Torran, highlighted the broader impact of the initiative.

"The project represents a great opportunity for our young people to have life-enhancing experiences and to grow.

Erasmus+ is a great programme and great credit is due to people like our local MEP Seán Kelly, who saw that it had potential beyond formal education," said Davide.

"Although the application process can seem difficult, the training and support we got from Léargas was of huge value in building a funded project and we appreciate their assistance and encouragement," he added.

Lissivigeen pupils create glass mosaics for new sensory garden

Fifth-class pupils at Lissivigeen National School have completed a series of colourful glass mosaics as part of the national BLAST Residency Programme.

The project saw the school collaborate with Kerry-based glass artist Julianne Foley over a 20-hour residency focused on creativity and hands-on design.

The initiative, part of the Creative Youth Plan, allows schools to work with professional artists to develop skills in innovation and problem-solving. Guided by Julianne, the students in Ms O’Mahony’s

class moved from initial sketches to cutting and arranging multicoloured glass before grouting their final pieces. The artwork was inspired by the school’s new sensory garden, which is currently under construction. Principal Ellen Cagney noted that the project provided a unique opportunity for pupils to express themselves artistically while working together on a shared vision for the school grounds. The finished mosaics are currently on display in the school lobby before they are moved to their permanent home in the garden.

DO WE EVER TRULY LEARN FROM HISTORY?

It has now been a month since the US-Israeli war against Iran broke out, and the world may never be the same again.

Described as the worst energy crisis in history, the world waits with bated breath to see what the outcome will be. People in Killarney and farther afield are feeling the pinch and once again, the world feels a little uncertain. Two weeks ago, we were talking about the rise of fuel and oil costs, which was and still is a huge topic of concern for everybody. At the time, the Killarney Advertiser took a trip down memory lane and revisited the fuel and oil crisis of 1973 and 1979 and how it compared to today’s events. As a self-confessed History buff, I was very curious about the Iranian revolution of 1979, so I listened to a 4-part podcast on the war, how it began, how it evolved and how it ended. I found it so fascinating on how it unfolded, particularly when I compared it to what is happening today. History exists to teach us how to not repeat mistakes of the past, and isn’t it interesting that we never seem to learn from them?

Iran has a fascinating history and experienced a lot of political instability in the 1900s. The country went through several leaders and dynasties before the Ayatollah came to power after the 1979 revolution.

IRAN PRE 1979 –THE QAJAR DYNASTY

The Qajar Dynasty ruled Iran from 1789 to 1925; however, it struggled with weak leadership and interference from Britain and Russia. The last ruling member of the family, Ahmad Shah Qajar, inherited the throne at only 11 years of age and he was viewed as a weak, incompetent ruler, therefore he was ousted from power. In 1921, a military officer named Reza Khan staged a coup. He was eventually named Shah and founded the Pahlavi dynasty.

PAHLAVI DYNASTY

Iran and the US had a good relationship during the Pahlavi rule, which seems like an unreachable concept to us in today’s world.

From the 1920s to the 1950s, Iran was under the leadership of Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi. He was forced to step down during World War II, passing power to his son, Mohammad Reza Shah. The younger Shah had limited control and political power which allowed emerging political figures like

Mohammed Mosaddegh to gain prominence for a few years. Mohammad Mosaddegh rose to power as a nationalist leader determined to take control of Iran’s oil.

The United States and Britain were not a fan of Prime Minister Mohammed Mosaddegh, and teamed up to lay the groundwork for a coup in Iran, resulting in his ousting.

This paved the way for Mohammad Reza Shah to return to power, with the US and Britian viewing the dynasty as a monarchy that was friendly to the west and an ally.

He was considered one of America’s strongest partners in the Middle East. However, throughout his rule, resistance was quietly growing among the Iranian people as they viewed the Shah as a dictator.

WHITE REVOLUTION

The Shah launched a top-down reform programme in 1963 in a bid to modernise Iran, aimed at avoiding violence to achieve progress for the country. He aimed to transform the country both economically and socially, through land reform, industrial growth and expanded rights for women. Land was taken from

big landlords and redistributed to poor people, while education and healthcare was expanded. Economic growth was boosted and Iran was starting to urbanise. Opposition was strong as it weakened landowners and religious leaders, causing critics to say that the country was becoming too Westernised.

IRAN REVOLUTION

Ultimately, the backlash against the White Revolution fuelled the Iranian Revolution, which led to the overthrow of the Shah. Students, workers, and religious groups protested the regime, citing inequality, political repression and Western influence. The movement was led by Ruhollah Khomeini, an exiled cleric who returned to Iran in 1979. The Shah, who was sick, fled, paving the way for Khomeini to become Supreme Leader of the new Islamic Republic. It changed the relationship between Iran and the US forever.

LESSONS LEARNED?

Looking back at Iran’s history, it seems that political instability has always been a factor. Today, as rising fuel costs and economic uncertainty are felt across the world, it’s important to reflect and see who and what came before us. History teaches us how to move forward and not repeat the same mistakes; however, the real question remains: are we willing to learn from it?

Open call for creatives as Culture Night 2026 launches

The Arts Office at Kerry County Council has officially announced an open call for grants for Culture Night 2026, which is set to take place on Friday, September 18.

This national celebration is a free-ofcharge event that provides a major platform for local artists, community groups, and venues to showcase the wealth of creativity found across the county. Killarney has traditionally been a cornerstone of the festival's success in Kerry. Last year, the town hosted some of the most memorable spectacles in the county, including the massive street performance by MOTHÚ featuring a giant puppet of St Gobnait. Other local highlights from the previous programme included performances by Eleanor McEvoy at Muckross Farm, concerts at St Mary’s Church of Ireland, and inclusive heritage evenings at ANAM. This history of high-quality artistic content has established Killarney as a primary destination for the thousands of people who engage with the 'One Night for All' initiative. For the 2026 programme, the Arts Office is encouraging even more innovative and

inclusive proposals from the Killarney area. There is a specific focus this year on events that align with equality and diversity, and for the first time, a dedicated funding stream has been ring-fenced to celebrate Ireland’s Presidency of the EU. Creative groups in Killarney are invited to submit proposals that shine a light on the various European cultures present within the local community.

The council is looking to work with a broad spectrum of people, from professional artists and performers to schools, shops, and community groups. Arts Officer Kate Kennelly has emphasised that the success of the night relies on the commitment of the arts sector to share their work with new audiences. In line with the national #PayTheArtist policy, all applicants must ensure that participating creatives are fairly supported in their proposals.

The deadline for grant submissions is 5.00pm on Friday, May 15. Anyone interested in organising an event or seeking further information can contact the Arts Office at arts@kerrycoco.ie or visit the official website at arts.kerrycoco.ie to submit a proposal online.

Water disruptions planned for Upper Park Road and Ballyspillane

Kerry County Council has issued a water alert for Killarney as part of the National Leakage Reduction Programme.

New connection works are scheduled for Monday, 30 March, which may cause supply disruptions and outages for residents in Upper Park Road, Ballyspillane, and surrounding areas.

The works are expected to take place between 4pm and 8pm. A traffic management plan will be in place for the duration of the project, and motorists should prepare for potential delays in the affected areas.

The council recommends that householders allow three to four hours after the estimated restoration time for the water supply to fully return to normal pressure.

Hundreds of global buyers arrive at INEC for Ireland’s largest tourism showcase

Killarney was the centre of the Irish tourism world this Tuesday and Wednesday as the Gleneagle Arena hosted Meitheal 2026.

As the largest and most significant trade event in the national industry, the flagship showcase brings together 267 international tourism buyers and operators to meet with 402 Irish tourism providers.

The event, organised by Fáilte Ireland in partnership with Tourism Ireland, is expected to result in significant business deals. Over 11,000 scheduled sales meetings will take place between Irish businesses and high-level operators from 17 countries, including the USA, Great Britain, Germany, Canada, the UAE, and Australia.

FOCUS ON NEW EXPERIENCES AND REGIONAL GROWTH

The showcase highlights the best of the Wild Atlantic Way, Ireland’s Ancient East, Ireland’s Hidden Heartlands, and Dublin.

This year, almost 40 new tourism experiences are featured for the first time, ranging from heritage sites and craft studios to unique culinary tours.

Speaking on the impact of the sector, Minister for Enterprise, Tourism and Employment Peter Burke TD said:

“Tourism is one of Ireland’s most important employers and a cornerstone of balanced regional economic development, with one in ten jobs supported by the sector. Delivering sustainable and evenly spread growth in tourism is a key objective of the national tourism policy which I launched last year, and trade events like Meitheal are central to achieving that ambition. Last year, overseas visitors generated €6 billion for the economy, supporting thousands of SMEs and sustaining livelihoods in communities right across the country. To remain competitive, we must continue showcasing the very best of Ireland to the world, from our cultural heritage to our world class hospitality and unique food experiences.”

DRIVING COMMERCIAL OPPORTUNITY

Prior to arriving in Killarney, international buyers took part in bespoke itineraries across the country to experience Irish hospitality firsthand. Caroline Bocquel, CEO of Fáilte Ireland, emphasised the practical business nature of the gather-

ing:

“Meitheal is where Ireland’s tourism industry comes together to do real business. Its power lies in the direct access it gives Irish tourism providers to high value international tour operators, buyers who collectively shape the travel decisions of hundreds of thousands of visitors every year. This is where global demand is translated into commercial opportunity. By working closely with industry partners to give these buyers a true sense of what sets Ireland apart, we help secure future business that supports jobs, strengthens communities and drives regional econo-

mies. This year, almost 40 new saleable tourism experiences are joining Meitheal for the first time, reflecting the innovation and creativity of businesses nationwide. Continually refreshing and evolving our offering is essential to keeping Ireland competitive in the global tourism marketplace.”

The 2026 event also places a heavy emphasis on sustainability. Organisers have designed every detail, from food sourcing to travel arrangements, to minimise the environmental impact and reduce the overall carbon footprint of the massive two-day gathering.

Wildflower Easter hunt announced for Ross Castle grounds

Ross Castle has announced a wildflower-themed Easter hunt taking place in the grounds around the historic site from April 2 to April 6.

The event offers local families an opportunity to learn about Irish wildflowers while taking part in a festive outdoor activity to celebrate the holiday. The event is free of charge and no pre-booking is required for those wishing to participate. Organisers are encouraging attendees to bring their detective skills, a notebook, and a pencil to help solve the seasonal challenge. Participants must find hidden eggs scattered across the grounds, some of which feature letters printed on the back. These letters form an anagram that, when rearranged, reveals a special flower name.

Those who successfully solve the anagram and bring the answer back to the castle reception will receive a reward in the form of wildflower seed bombs. These small bags contain a mix of 29

native Irish wildflower species, including annuals and perennials such as Cornflower, Poppy, Ox Eye Daisy, and Red Clover.

The initiative aims to highlight the ecological importance of native flora. Native wildflowers provide essential food and habitats for local biodiversity, supporting threatened pollinators like bees and butterflies. Because these species are adapted to the local climate and soil conditions, they are highly resilient and require fewer nutrients or pesticides, making them an ideal choice for restoring Irish habitats and improving soil health.

Families are invited to visit the grounds during the five-day period to take part in the hunt, collect their seeds, and contribute to local biodiversity by scattering them at home.

Soccer Memories Café to launch at Coill na Darrach

The Killarney Soccer Memories Café will take place this Saturday, (March 28), from 11am to 1pm at Clann Housing, Coill na Darrach (V93VXY8).

The event aims to bring soccer fans of all ages together to relive and share their favourite moments from the game. The café is part of the Alzheimer Society of Ireland’s Sporting Memories initiative. This programme supports people living with dementia and older adults by using sport as a tool to spark memories,

Holy Cross Mercy goes yellow on Daffodil Day

The pupils and staff of Holy Cross Mercy School traded their traditional red and grey uniforms for vibrant yellow on Friday last, to celebrate ‘Lá Buí’ in support of the Irish Cancer Society’s Daffodil Day.

The school grounds were transformed into a sea of colour as the school came together for the annual fundraiser.

Despite the Lenten season being in full swing, a special dispensation was granted for the day, allowing pupils to enjoy

treats. These were kindly donated by The Dungeon Bookshop, adding to the festive atmosphere of the event. All proceeds from the day's collections were directed to the Irish Cancer Society to support their ongoing work in cancer research and patient services.

Holy Cross Mercy Principal, Alice Davern expressed thanks to all families in the school community for their "generous donations to this wonderful cause. We are extremely grateful to all at the Irish Cancer Society for their wonderful work."

Killarney natives Lt Col Ian Harrington and Capt Shane O'Neill are currently deployed with the Irish Defence Forces as part of the NATO-led KFOR mission in Kosovo.

Lt Col Harrington, from Loughguitane, and Capt O'Neill, from Killarney town, are among a contingent of Irish personnel serving at the mission’s headquarters in Camp Film City, Pristina.

The Irish Defence Forces have partici-

pated in the UN-mandated peace-keeping mission since 1999, focusing on maintaining a secure environment and freedom of movement for all citizens in the region. Earlier this month, Irish personnel in Pristina marked St Patrick’s Day with a special medal ceremony to recognize their service and contribution to the mission.

build social connections, and enhance overall wellbeing.

By discussing legendary matches, players, and local soccer history, the initiative provides a supportive environment for attendees to engage with others through their shared passion for the sport. The organisers are inviting all members of the community with an interest in the game to attend. Muckross Rowing Club hosts successful Head of the River trials

Muckross Rowing Club hosted its annual Head of the River rowing time trial on Saturday last, March 21, at the National Rowing Centre in Farran, Cork.

The event took place under clear skies after being rescheduled from its original December date due to bad weather. As a key fixture in the winter rowing calendar, the event attracted 458 crews from 29 different clubs across Munster and Leinster.

The competition featured a specialized course length of 1950 metres, adapted from the standard 3km distance to help athletes transition toward the upcoming regatta season in April. This event remains the only time trial hosted at the sport's national headquarters.

A composite Men’s Masters Eight, featuring rowers from six clubs across Cork, Kerry, and Tipperary, recorded the fastest time of the day at 6 minutes 39 seconds. Killorglin RC secured the title of

fastest women's crew, with their Junior 18 Quad finishing in 7 minutes 12 seconds.

In the coastal categories, top honours went to Rosscarbery’s Men’s J16 Coastal Quad and Kilmacsimon RC’s Women’s J16 Coastal Quad.

The host club, Muckross RC, recorded five category wins during the meet. Victories came in the Women’s J16 Quad (Marissa O’Connor, Cara Spillane, Julia Weglarz, Orla Forde), Men’s Intermediate Single (Cillian Leslie), and the Men’s J14 Quad (Daire Murphy, Cian Whitty, Max Dorrill, Joe Hickey). Further success was seen in the Women’s J14 Octuple and the Women’s J16 Single, where Lauren O’Donoghue took the top spot. The club also secured three second-place and four third-place finishes.

Other Kerry clubs including Workmen RC of Killarney, Tralee RC, and Killorglin RC also showed strong form on the water. Speaking after the conclusion of the races, Event Secretary and Club Vice Chairman Tim O’Shea expressed satis-

faction with the turnout and thanked the volunteers, parents, and sponsors who supported the event. With the time trial season now concluded, clubs will move their focus to the regatta season starting next month.

Fuel prices cut by up to 22c;

Will it make a difference?

After almost a month of surging fuel costs, the Government decided to cut excise duty on diesel by 22c and petrol by 17c, easing pressure on motorists at the pumps.

Last weekend, prices skyrocketed up to €2.25 / €2.30 per litre. Prices are starting to fall at the pumps with forecourts averaging on €2.05 / €2.08 per litre. A

smaller reduction has been introduced on home heating oil, with the Government providing a 2c cut. As it stands on March 26, the price of home heating oil is €842.50 per 500 litres.

Among the additional measures is a rebate scheme for hauliers and bus operators, which Tánaiste Simon Harris confirmed will be backdated. The overall support package is an estimated cost of

€235m, also including targeted energy supports for pensioners, carers and people with disabilities. There will also be an excise reduction for agricultural or green diesel.

Opposition parties have critised the latest measures, saying it doesn’t go far enough to help households who are struggling with the soaring costs inflicted by the US/Israeli war against Iran.

Warning to Apple users amid new phone virus

An Garda Siochana issued a warning for all iPhone users amid a new virus that is targeting Apple devices. The virus can infect the devices through compromised websites or infected links that inject malware and bypasses the standard protections on the mobile phone. Phone users don’t receive any notification that the device has been compromised as the malware works silently in the background with no effect on the phone’s operations. The malware primarily targets Apple devices running iOS versions 18.4 – 18.7 and allows attackers to access content, messages, contacts and credentials stored on the phone. Gardaí issued important advice on how to best protect your mobile phone. Users are advised to update their devices to Ios 26.3.1 or 18.7.6 to fully protect their mobile phones. Enabling lockdown mode in the device settings will also give stronger protection, however this might limit some functionality. An Garda Siochana said that anyone who finds themselves a victim of the malware should consult a competent cyber security professional or report the crime to their local Garda Station.

Is rural Ireland dying? South Kerry weighs in

TG4 aired a documentary on Wednesday titled Bánú na Tuaithe (Rural Depopulation) examining the impact of rural decline in remote parts of Ireland.

Investigative Journalist Kevin Magee asked the question: is rural Ireland dying?

General Secretary of the INTO John Boyle predicted that more than 70 rural primary schools are under threat of closure if the current trend in rural depopulation continues. According to the latest data from the Department of Education and Youth, the number of children enrolling in primary schools across the country fell by 6,470 last year. Eleven primary schools have closed permanently since last June due to falling rolls, with others now facing an uncertain future. South Kerry GAA board carried out an analysis of the de-

cline in school enrolment numbers in its area. It calculated that there has been a 41% fall in the combined primary school population at 13 national schools in the 28-year period from 1993 to 2021. The board has predicted that certain clubs “will have major difficulty fielding underage teams” in the future. South Kerry GAA board chair Joseph McCrohan said:

“If you want to measure a GAA club and you want to measure what's going to happen to a GAA club in the next number of years, take a look at the primary school. If you’ve kids in primary school, you’ll have football teams, hurling teams. If you don't, you're in trouble”. This year, five south Kerry clubs, Reenard, Waterville, Dromid, Cahersiveen and Valentia had to join together to field an under -14 boys’ team.

There was an impressive international dimension to this year’s St Patrick’s Day parade in Killarney with a number of overseas groups participating and one of them bringing home the prestigious prize for the best overall entry.

The adjudicators chose Landzette as the top prizewinner and praised the group for bringing their passion and enthusiasm for the big occasion all the way from the Italian/Swiss border to the streets of Killarney.

Landzette wore traditional costume of Aosta Valley and their eye-catching outfits, made entirely by hand, were true works of art with bright fabrics, beads, sequins, mirrors and bells symbolically recalling the uniforms of Napoleonic soldiers.

New era for Rally of the Lakes as 2026 route revealed

The 2026 Killarney Rally of the Lakes is set to introduce several major changes to the prestigious May Bank Holiday motorsport event.

The weekend will kick off with the ceremonial start ramp in Killarney town centre on Friday evening. This high-energy event remains a fan favourite, drawing thousands of spectators to the town to see the crews and machinery up close before the competitive action begins on Saturday morning.

The opening day features a blend of legendary stages and fresh territory. While the route includes the iconic run over Moll’s Gap, a significant departure for 2026 sees the rally move towards Mill-

The Irish rallying community has been saddened by the death of Michael Lyster, who passed away on Sunday.

While primarily known as the long-standing presenter of RTÉ’s The Sunday Game, Lyster was a dedicated motorsport enthusiast and a frequent visitor to Killarney for the Rally of the Lakes over several decades.

He was a regular competitor in Kerry as both a driver and a co-driver. A major highlight of his rallying career came in 1992 when he navigated for the late Enda Nolan in a Ford Sierra Sapphire

street for much of the Saturday loop. This involves the use of newer or lesser-used roads in the vicinity, providing a fresh challenge for drivers. In line with this shift, the service park for Saturday will be located at the Green Glens Arena in Millstreet.

Sunday’s action returns to the traditional heartland of South Kerry, featuring staples such as the Beallaghbeama Pass. The organisers have introduced a twist on the Shanera stage, extending the route by approximately 4km over roads never used in this specific configuration. In a major scheduling shift, the Junior contenders will now run their full eight-stage event on Saturday rather than the traditional Sunday slot. Furthermore, following the success of the

Rally Masters at Killarney Racecourse, a dedicated World Rally Car class will run exclusively on Sunday. This class features iconic 2.0-litre machines from the early 2000s, including Subaru Imprezas and Ford Focus WRCs. While these cars are no longer eligible for overall championship honours, they remain huge fan

favourites and will provide a nostalgic soundtrack to the final day.

The event serves as a crucial counting round for the NAPA Irish Tarmac Rally Championship, the Southern 4 Rally Championship, and the Moriarty’s Central Car Sales Kingdom of Kerry Rally Championship.

MICHAEL LYSTER: A fixture of Killarney motorsport

Cosworth, finishing fourth overall in the Rally of the Lakes.

During the early 1990s, when the event was still held in the winter, he also competed behind the wheel of a Talbot Sunbeam.

Lyster’s involvement in the county extended to the Circuit of Kerry and the Banna (Kerry Winter) Rally. Outside of

his own driving, he frequently co-drove for Killarney’s Mike O’Leary on events across the country. In more recent years, he remained a central part of the local motorsport scene, serving as the official MC for the Rally of the Lakes in 2016 and 2017, and returning for the event’s 40th anniversary in 2019.

His professional broadcasting experi-

ence made him a natural fit for the start and finish ramps, where he brought a genuine passion for the sport to the prize-giving ceremonies. An unassuming presence in the service parks and on the stages, his contribution to the sport and his connection to Killarney will be remembered by the many who knew him through rallying.

Seachtain na Gaeilge runs annually from March 1 to 17, promoting the Irish language through a wide range of events. Kerry Youth Council meets with Billy Kelleher MEP

Members of Kerry Comhairle na nÓg, the county’s youth council, met with Ireland South MEP Billy Kelleher in Killarney recently to discuss a range of local and international issues.

The meeting focused on the council’s primary topic for the year: the lack of facilities and activities for young people in Kerry. Mr Kelleher suggested that school buildings could be better utilised as community spaces during out-ofschool hours. The Fianna Fáil MEP also addressed the housing crisis, noting that excessive red tape and planning issues have stunted the ability to build affordable homes for the next generation. During the session, the discussion moved to global affairs, including the conflicts in Ukraine and Iran. Mr Kelleher shared insights from his previous state visits and his time as Minister for Trade, while also briefing the members on Ireland’s up-

coming EU Presidency and the daily life of an MEP in Brussels and Strasbourg. On the subject of Artificial Intelligence, he warned of its future impact and stressed the need for democratic oversight and checks and balances.

“It was a great opportunity for Kerry Comhairle na nÓg to meet with one of our Ireland South MEPs. We represent the young people of Kerry to decision makers, and getting the chance to discuss young people’s priorities, such as the lack of facilities, with one of our European representatives was great,” said Christian Gleasure, the Comhairle’s incoming National Executive Representative.

Judo Club athletes move closer to Black Belt status

Members of Killarney Judo Club travelled to Dublin on Sunday, March 22, to participate in the National Judo Grading.

The event serves as a critical milestone for martial artists progressing toward their Black Belts, testing both technical skill and competitive ability.

Among the successful candidates was Kevin Casey, who recently returned to the club after several years away. Casey earned his Blue Belt after completing a demanding technical assessment that required him to demonstrate a diverse range of traditional throws.

Two of the club’s younger prospects, 15olds Patrik Polubnak and James Maher, delivered standout performances to secure their Brown Belts. A highlight of

the day occurred when Maher executed a high-amplitude throw on an opponent significantly larger than himself, earning a perfect score from the national examiners. Both teenagers are now beginning an intensive training block in preparation for their Black Belt grading this September. Ciara Forde also continued her ascent through the senior ranks. Following her performances in Dublin, Forde is now just three contest wins away from her Black Belt. If successful, she will become the 26th person in the history of the Killarney club to achieve the rank.

Coaches and supporters from the club made the trip to the capital to oversee the grading, which marks another successful chapter for the local club as it continues to develop athletes across all age groups.

Lions Club's scrap metal collection for CUH Children’s Cancer Unit

Killarney Lions Club has issued a reminder that its 2026 scrap metal collection takes place this Saturday, March 28, at Killarney Racecourse.

Organised in partnership with KWD Recycling, the event will raise funds for the Children’s Cancer Unit at Cork University Hospital (CUH).

The collection will run from 9am to 4pm. Members of the public are encouraged to donate non-ferrous scrap metals, including aluminium, copper, brass, zinc, and stainless steel. Organisers have noted that white goods such as fridges, cookers, and washing machines cannot be accepted at this event.

"Our scrap collection went really well last year, so we’re looking forward to as many people as possible making a donation again this year," said Killarney Lions Club President, Jason Higgins.

All proceeds from the recycled metal will

go towards improving facilities for families using the essential services at the CUH Children’s Cancer Unit. The Killarney Lions Club continues to support various local groups and individuals through such fundraising efforts and voluntary activities.

Liebherr Container Cranes Ltd. opened its doors to the next generation of technical talent this month, hosting over 300 students at its Killarney facility for Engineers Ireland STEPS Engineers Week.

Now in its tenth year of participation, the local manufacturer welcomed 332 Leaving Certificate students from 16 schools across Kerry and Cork to explore the world of heavy engineering.

The visit provided a comprehensive look at the innovation driving the design and manufacture of world-class container cranes. Students were given a guided tour of the manufacturing floor, where

Liebherr inspires students during Engineers Week 2026

they observed high-tech processes including robotic shot blasting, plasma cutting, and automatic welding systems. The highlights of the week were found in the Interactive Zone, where students moved beyond theory to practical application. Demonstrations in CNC programming and Creo design software showcased the digital skills required in modern manufacturing. Many students were particularly drawn to the apprenticeship information desk, which outlined the various career pathways avail-

able within the company. Technology took centre stage with a HoloLens 3D crane demonstration and the Liebherr crane simulator. Built using original hardware and controls, the simulator replicates the experience of operating a massive ship-to-shore crane via a Remote Operator Station (ROS). This gave the teenagers a firsthand look at how augmented reality and remote operation are transforming the industry.

The tour concluded at the research and

development facility, where the focus shifted to the future of port logistics. Students witnessed rubber-tyred gantry cranes operating in various modes, including full autonomous control and remote operation.

Company representatives explained how multidisciplinary teams, comprising automation, software, mechanical, and structural engineers, work together to ensure Killarney-built cranes remain at the forefront of global efficiency and safety.

COOLICK PRESCHOOL

Memorial walk for popular St Brendan’s College teacher

Past and present staff members from St Brendan’s College recently gathered to walk the Old Kenmare Road in memory of their late colleague Mary O’Donoghue.

Mary taught Irish and French at the Sem for 30 years from 1992 until her retirement in 2022.

Her unexpected passing in 2024 was deeply felt by colleagues and the generations of students she taught, many of whom fondly knew her by the nickname 'MOD'.

Though a long-time resident and wellknown figure in Killarney, Mary was a proud Cork woman and frequently reminded friends and colleagues of her roots. Members of her family joined the staff for the walk, where stories were shared of her warmth, kindness, and her well-known sense of humour.

A keen fan of set dancing, Mary was remembered on the day for her constant smile and the lively company she provided during her three decades at the school.

SKDP staff support Daffodil Day

Staff at South Kerry Development Partnership (SKDP) marked Daffodil Day 2026 by hosting coffee mornings across their four regional offices.

The initiative was held to raise funds and show solidarity with the Irish Cancer Society.

Employees throughout the organisation took part by wearing yellow and purchasing pins and other merchandise to support the national fundraiser. The events provided an opportunity for colleagues to gather and contribute to the charity’s ongoing work in cancer research and patient care.

Pope Leo presented with shamrocks from Kerry

firmed that everyone is welcome to participate, with registration taking place on the morning of the event.

Following the completion of the walk, refreshments will be served in the hall for all participants. Committee Secretary Kay Malone expressed her thanks to the public for their continued support of the fundraiser.

Pope Leo XIV was presented with a little piece of Kerry from Norma Foley who visited the Vatican to mark St Patrick’s Day.

She was the first Irish government minister to meet with Pope Leo, who was elected last May following the passing of Pope Francis. Minister Foley presented Pope Leo with a beautifully crafted Naomhóg Dingle Crystal bowl and Ballinskelligs Shamrock at St Peter’s Square in the Vatican during her St Patrick’s Day visit to Italy last week. Minister Foley described it as an honour to present the shamrock to Pope Leo, saying: “The handcrafted Dingle Crystal bowl takes the shape of a Naomhóg

inspired by the voyages of St. Brendan, patron saint of Kerry, and the rich maritime tradition and enduring spirit of the Irish people”. Pope Leo thanked Minister Foley for the bowl of Shamrock and mentioned his knowledge of the St Patrick’s Day celebrations in his home city of Chicago, where they dye the river green to celebrate St Patrick. Pope Leo XIV has visited Ireland on a number of occasions while Prior General of the Augustinian Order between 2001 and 2013. He is fluent in English, Spanish, Italian, and Portuguese, and can read Latin and German, and holds advanced degrees in Mathematics, Divinity, and Canon Law.

Kingdom face Donegal in repeat of All-Ireland final

NFL DIVISION 1 FINAL

Kerry v Donegal

Sunday 4pm

Croke Park | Live on TG4

Last year’s All-Ireland finalists come face to face once again this Sunday as the champions, Kerry, face the challengers, Donegal, in the National Football League Division 1 final.

Kerry just about snuck into the top two with a hard-fought draw against Armagh last weekend (Armagh 1-21 Kerry 0-24).

A late score by the in-form Seánie O’Shea ensured that his side came home with a point and that was enough to edge

Mayo, who enjoyed a 19-point win at home to Roscommon.

Donegal beat Ulster rivals Monaghan by five in Clones, a result which saw them top the table on 11 points, one ahead of both Kerry and Mayo.

Monaghan were already relegated and they will be joined in Division 2 next season by Dublin, who slipped into the bottom two following their two-point defeat to Galway.

Jim McGuinness already has his boys moving well at this early stage of the season/ They won five of their seven league matches, including their Round 2 fixture against Kerry, and lost just once (away to Roscommon in Round 6).

Their line-up against the Farney includ-

ed several familiar names from their run to the 2025 All-Ireland final. Caolán McMonagle, Brendan McCole, Peadar Mogan, Eoghan Bán Gallagher, Caolán McColgan, Hugh McFadden, Michael Langan and Conor O’Donnell all started, while Ryan McHhugh and Finbarr Roarty came off the bench. Youngster Shea Malone bagged 2-3 from play. McGuinness has tried to play down his interest in winning the league but realistically Donegal have only won this title once before. That was in 2007, which is the most recent of their four previous final appearances. The All-Ireland is obviously the ultimate goal, but surely the highly-rated manager is not in a position to turn his nose up at silverware.

With that in mind, Kerry can expect a seriously tough challenge at HQ. Jack O’Connor will be hoping to claim his sixth Division 1 crown. No one in this part of the world will need reminding that each of his previous five league titles were followed by All-Irelands that very same year.

Kerry v Donegal will form a double header with the Division 2 final between Cork and Meath. Throw-in for that one is at 1.45pm.

On Saturday, Carlow take on Longford in the Division 4 final at 5pm, and it’s Down v Wexford in the Division 3 final at 7.15pm.

Playoff heartbreak for St Paul’s

There was heartache for Utility Trust St Paul’s on Sunday afternoon as they were defeated by Flomax Liffey Celtics in a boisterous Killarney Sports and Leisure Centre.

Hopes were high after the regular season exploits that James Fleming's side could go one better than last year when they lost out to Killester in the showpiece final. They came into the game following an impressive end to the season and were fancied by many to account for the Celtics. But the Kildare side are a battle-hardened outfit who have competed for honours annually and they brought all that game nous with them to Killarney to spring a bit of an upset.

St Paul’s, without ever reaching their usual level of performance, led at half time but the Celtics, given their experience, were still very much in the game and started to take their cue during the third quarter to take the advantage heading into the final quarter. And to be fair to St Paul’s they upped the ante in that period to take the lead on two occasions, but the guiding hands of Destinee Bursch and Sorcha Tiernan navigated the Celtics to success. And while the immediate reaction for St Paul’s will obviously be of disappointment, they have now got themselves a seat at the table when future honours will be discussed.

Maisie Burnham and Lorraine Scanlon got them off to the best possible start and with the Celtics yet to find their accuracy it was 6-0 inside two minutes. The visitors would be thankful to American Brooke Kane as it was her promptings that got her side going and she was responsible for all but two of her sides opening eleven points. But Tara Cousins was getting her customary jumper shot going and alongside Burnham the lead was now pushed out to 19-11. Another

signature Cousin basket may have made St Paul’s feel comfortable but some good outside shooting by Ciara Mulleady and Kane squeezed it up to 21-17 by quarters end.

Irish international Sorcha Tiernan quickly opened her account but that was matched by Leah McMahon and with Scanlon in customary form all seemed to be going according to the script. That point was emphasised by a Cousins three but Kane and Tiernan were tipping away and when Mulleady hit another three, the lead was now down to the minimum, 30-29. Lovisa Hevinder hit a timely three and with Cousins scoring from the charity stripe, the lead was maintained at half time, but the Celtics' interest was definitely growing.

Defences were definitely on top in the

Crokes enjoy golf outing in memory of Denis

The Dr Crokes GAA Club Golf Society outing at Waterville Golf Club was in memory of the late Denis Coffey, who was a member, player and officer. A great day was had by all with some fine shooting on the famous South Kerry course.

The first prize was won by Keith McMahon with a score of 35 points. John O’Leary and John Lynch came second and third respectively. The Category 1 winner was Frank Shaw, Category 2 Timmy O’Donoghue, and Category 3 Finian Moran.

James Jones was the front nine winner

with 18pts, while Joey Sheehan was the back nine winner with 17 points. The event was sponsored by Brosnan & Co. Solicitors.

RESULTS: 1st Keith McMahon (10) 35 pts, 2nd John O Leary (21) 35 pts, 3rd John Lynch (35) pts, 4th David Byrne (21) 34 pts, 5th Shane O’Driscoll (27) 34 pts, 6th Sean Brosnan (6) 33 pts. Cat 1 Frank Shaw (5) 31 pts. Cat 2 Timmy O’Donoghue (14) 33 pts. Cat 3 Finian Moran (19) 33 pts. Front 9 James Jones (7) 18pts. Back 9 Joey Sheehan (6) 17 pts. Guests: 1st Tadhg Hickey (23) 40 pts, 2nd John Griffin (12) 37 pts.

third but Burnham, Hevinder and Scanlon did plunder some points while the Celtics would be thankful to Bursch for their 50-48 three quarters lead.

St Paul’s hit the final quarter running with a noticeable increase in intensity, most definitely in defence. Leah McMahon was integral in this period which ironically started with a Mulleady three. But Burnham, Scanlon and Hevinder got energy out of the defensive stops, and they drew the sides level at 53 each with 6.33 to go.

Cousins then gave her side the lead, a lead that was doubled by Scanlon and the game looked to have flipped at 57-53 in favour of St Paul’s.

Kate Williamson and Bursch had other ideas though as they drew Celtics level.

O Connor and Tiernan put them ahead again but St Paul’s, buoyed by a vocal

support, went again with Cousins getting their noses 63-60 ahead. That lead was wiped out by Bursch in the next offence with a three and teammate O'Connor followed suit to put them in the box seat. With the game going to the wire the next score was always to be crucial and up stepped Tiernan with a massive moment, a huge three to really put the game to bed.

Elsewhere, the Lakers also exited the Men’s Division 1 playoffs at the quarter-final stage as they were beaten by the Drogheda Wolves (93-78).

Lots to talk about in this week’s edition of the Killarney Advertiser. Firstly, I hope that Ireland won their crucial World Cup playoff in Prague last night and that the magnificent Late Late Show by Troy Parrott against Hungary reaped dividends.

Today, Good Friday, the Kerry LGFA Golf Classic goes ahead at Beaufort, and the Streets of Killarney will be the scene for the spectacular Killarney Valley AC annual 5k run.

The Kerry hurlers will meet Laois in the Division 2 Hurling League final tomorrow after that great win over Meath, then it’s back to Croker for the rematch of Kerry v Donegal on Sunday.

In Ireland, the clocks will go forward by one hour at 1am on Sunday. This marks the beginning of daylight saving time, which will continue until the clocks are set back on October 25 2026.

Supporters are advised to check with their clubs regarding changes to the schedules of a full Round 2 of the Kerry County Football Leagues. Most games have been rescheduled for tomorrow, Saturday.

STREETS OF KILLARNEY

There is so much to look forward to in the days weeks ahead, starting today Good with the Streets of Killarney Road Race. The colourful cavalcade hosted by the Killarney Valley Athletic Club is sold out at 960 entrants. The race starts at Killarney House grounds at 7pm. The route goes along the river walk, loops back past the Thatched Cottage, past the Cathedral, and then two laps of New St, High St, New Rd, Port Rd, and finishing on Beech Rd.

All proceeds are going back into the sport via Killarney Valley AC. The Race Ambassador and Starter is Canadian Paralympian Madie Wilson Walker, who is a club member and who will also be running in the race.

Road Closures will be in place from 6.30pm, so schedule that into your travel plans.

KERRY

FC WIN

It has taken Kerry FC until Round 6 of the LOI to record their first win of the season. They lost twice and then went unbeaten for three drawn games, so this 1-0 win before the home fans was a very welcome after hard-fought encounter with Finn Harps.

Indeed, Kerry had to rely on splendid goalkeeper Harry Halwax to fend off the raiding Donegal side in the 22nd minute. That let-off inspired the home side. Cian Murphy reacted quickest, getting ahead of his marker to make perfect contact with Eric Coufie’s cross after a great run down the left side to give the hosts that 1-0 lead.

They nearly made it 2-0 in the 39th minute when Nathan Lumingo struck the post. The score at half-time was 1-0. Kerry had been in this happy position over the past few drawn games; would they succumb to an equaliser once more? Not so, on Friday last thanks to the brilliance of the birthday boy, ‘keeper Harry Halwax, who saved from Conor Tourish in the 85th and Josh Cullen four minutes later. It was hectic finish as Finn Haps player Vince Borden was sent off, but Kerry survived to win 1-0. It was a welcome result for Colin Healy’s side, and the good news from David Moriarty, the ever-helpful sports reporter for Kerry FC, is that Ryan Kelliher is back fit and well.

Son of Killarney Golf Club Captain Tomás, the prolific scorer from Lissivigeen was sidelined for the past season recovering from the dreaded ACL injury. With him on board, Kerry can look forward bagging to more goals. Tonight they are away to Cobh Ramblers.

ARMAGH ADVANTAGE

Armagh ladies’ and men’s teams used home advantage to avoid what appeared to be imminent relegation in last weekend’s meetings against Kerry. The LGFA team was boosted by the return of Aimee Mackin (0-4) they raced into a runaway 10-point lead at Silverbridge in the Orchard County. The home side led at 1-6 to 1-2 at the break thanks to a free from Mackin and dead-ball scores from Kelly Mallon.

All systems go on local sports scene

Kerry staged a monumental fight back with Síofra O’Shea (2-2) in sparkling form, well supported by the ever-industrious Leah McMahon, but Armagh won out in the end by 1-13 to 2-8. The Kingdom are away to Kildare this Sunday and they need to win to guarantee their survival in Division 1. If they lose they will be overtaken by the Lilywhites, and bottom-of-the-table Dublin can also climb out of the drop zone if they manage to beat league leaders Cork.

Meanwhile, the men qualified for the league final after drawing with Armagh. The draw suited both sides in the end as Armagh also avoided relegation. It was real championship stuff, and at this stage, Jack knows his starting 15 for the drive for Sam 40. He will have a strong team out on Sunday to retain the league title.

Good news also for the Kerry hurlers who defeated Meath by 2-18 to 0-18, gaining promotion to Division 1B next season. Local hurler Tom Doyle, scorer of 1-1, continued his consistent high performance.

Tomorrow they will face Laois in the NHL Division 2 final at Portlaoise. The match will be shown live on Spórt TG4 YouTube from 1.55pm.

MUNSTER CHAMPIONSHIP

I am delighted to note that the Munster GAA Council is striking a very positive note for the planned amalgamation of the GAA, LGFA and Camogie by setting up some attractive double-headers. The camogie and ladies’ football matches will once again be used to form double-headers ahead of matches in the men’s Munster provincial competitions this year. Three senior camogie games and one women's football match will be played before a trio of men's fixtures over the course of April and May. A women’s clash of Kerry v Cork will be played before the Munster Football Championship final on May 10, while the Munster camogie decider will take place before a round-robin match in the men’s game on May 17. The venue will be determined at a later date.

Munster GAA chairman Tim Murphy said: “The inclusion of four curtain-raisers ahead of our Munster Senior Hurling and Football Championship games once

again highlights the strong and growing partnership between our respective organisations.”

Kerry begin the defence of their Munster and All-Ireland titles with an away trip to Ennis on Saturday, April 25 at 2pm to face Clare.

Newly promoted Cork, buoyed by their return to Division 1, will be expected to come through the other side of the draw, setting up a Cork v Kerry Munster football final on Sunday, May 10.

BASKETBALL

Disappointment for Utility Trust St Paul's, who lost out in their quarter-final of the Women’s Super League.

A packed Killarney Sports & Leisure Leisure Centre cheered on the local side, who dominated the opening quarter as Síofra O’Shea and Leah McMahon, who figured so prominently in the Kerry LGFA game the previous day, made

the long journey home from Armagh to boost James Fleming's side. They showed no ill effects from battling to the finish. UTSP were right in it to the closing stages when Liffey Celtics’ three-pointers proved decisive.

Elsewhere, local man and Ireland team manager James Weldon was disappointed to see his side miss out on the chance to qualify for the second round of the FIBA Women’s EuroBasket 2027 Qualifiers, following a 90-54 defeat to Israel in their behind-closed-doors game in Riga, Latvia on St Patrick’s Day.

“We are all very disappointed that we did not put in the performance we wanted tonight,” Weldon said. “We were not happy with our start, and to be fair, Israel played extremely well.

“The squad is still relatively young, and there will always be setbacks along the way. This stings and will for a while, but when the group looks back on the cam-

paign as a whole, we will see the overall progress.

“I want to thank all the staff and players who go above and beyond to play for their country. Tonight does not change that we won two games in the campaign, and the future is definitely very bright for these players.”

MICHAEL LYSTER RIP

In last week’s edition, we marked the passing of Ollie Favier, Christy Sheehan and Ronnie Delany. Sadly, Delany’s wife of 64 years, Joan, passed away two days after his burial.

Very sad also to hear of the passing of 71-year-old sports broadcaster Michael Lyster, who anchored The Sunday Game for three decades. He was a most pleasant and amiable presenter. He retired from hosting in 2018 after first joining RTÉ in 1979. He was also a keen rally driver. Beannacht Dé lena anam.

Future stars shine at Killarney rugby blitz

Over 450 youngsters take to the field in Aghadoe

The bright future of Munster rugby was on full display last weekend as Killarney RFC’s Aghadoe grounds played host to the prestigious Aviva Munster Mini Rugby Festival.

Over 450 young boys and girls from across the province descended on the club for a day defined by skill, sportsmanship and the pure joy of the game. From the first whistle at 10am, the pitches were alive with the sounds of cheering parents and the determined footwork of U10 and U12 teams representing clubs such as Killorglin RFC, Garryowen, Clonmel and host club Killarney.

The festival, which is part of a national series sponsored by Aviva, focuses on development and participation rather than high-stakes competition. For many of the young players, the highlight was the opportunity to test their skills against teams they rarely meet in

regular local fixtures.

“It’s about creating a lifelong love for the sport,” said David Hickey. “Seeing the kids from different clubs swapping stories and shaking hands after a tough

game – that’s what the spirit of rugby is all about.”

The success of an event of this scale relies heavily on the community. Killarney RFC was transformed into a bustling

hub of activity, supported by an army of club volunteers and a roster of local businesses.

Attendees were kept fuelled and moving thanks to the support of local partners including Kelly's Londis, Flesk Meats and The Warehouse Cafe, while Patchino's Coffee & Treats from Killorglin provided the much-needed caffeine boost for the sidelines. The logistical heavy lifting – vital for hosting hundreds of visitors – was made possible through the contribution of firms like Moynihan Scaffolding, Leane’s Tool Hire and O'Callaghan’s Coaches.

A particularly moving sight during the festival was the Clonmel RFC squad wearing odd socks in celebration of World Down Syndrome Day, a gesture that resonated deeply with the crowd and highlighted the inclusive nature of the rugby community.

As the final games wrapped up in the afternoon, every player departed with a sense of achievement (and perhaps a few grass stains). For the lucky teams involved, the journey doesn't necessarily end here; stand-out participants from these provincial festivals often move on to the National Festival held at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin later this season. Killarney RFC has once again proven itself a premier venue for grassroots sport, leaving the Black and Red army proud of their home turf and their rising stars.

Spa GAA

EARLY SEASON SILVERWEAR: Spa were crowned champions of the Keane’s of Killorglin Minor Boys Championship Division E Shield Final after a hard-fought 1-16 to 1-13 victory over Moyvane. Despite conceding an early goal, Spa settled well with a goal of their own, and the sides were level at 1-06 apiece at half-time. Spa took control in the second half, delivering a strong all-round team performance, with disciplined defending, effective link-up play, and solid work rate across the pitch. Moyvane rallied late on, but Spa showed great composure to see out the win. Lucas Neher was named Man of the Match, while captain Daithi Stack had the honour of lifting the Shield.

It was an excellent team performance, particularly given the absence of a number of regular starters.

LADIES: Spa Ladies made a dream start to their Donal Curtin County League Division 2 campaign with an emphatic 6-16 to 2-2 victory over Finuge/St. Senan’s on home soil. In challenging conditions, Spa delivered an excellent all-round team performance, with Liadh Tobin and Saoirse Kelly particularly influential in attack. The game also saw senior debuts for Lily O’Shea, Alanna Collins and Ava Brosnan, a proud moment for the trio, with Brosnan making an immediate impact on the scoreboard coming on from the bench. Next up for Spa is another home match against Annascaul/Castlegregory on 5th April.

SCÓR RINCE FOIRNE: Spa’s Senior Rince Foirne team represented the club with great pride at the Munster Scór Finals in Newport last Sunday. Having been crowned Kerry champions last month, the team delivered a strong and spirited performance on the provincial stage. While they did not come away with the title on this occasion, their effort, commitment and teamwork were a credit to themselves and the club.

PARADE: Spa GAA made a memorable impression at this year’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade, proudly embracing the theme “Echoes of Killarney’s Future.” The club’s float, designed as a mobile football field, highlighted Spa’s status as one of Kerry’s senior clubs, while also serving as a stage for the talented Scór dancers and young musicians who performed along the parade route to great acclaim. Under the banner “SPA: Solar Powered All Stars,” the display celebrated both the club’s recent solar installation and its thriving academy, with children contributing homemade solar-themed arts and crafts. A sea of blue and yellow flags, high fives from Spark the Mascot, and the dedication of the organising committee made the showcase a standout, reflecting the strong community spirit and pride that runs through Spa.

Glenflesk GAA

COUNTY LEAGUE: McCarthy Insurance Group Senior County League Division 1 Round 1. Glenflesk 1-21 Austin Stacks 1-18. Match report courtesy of Michael Healy. On an emotional afternoon in Glenflesk, the home side opened their County League campaign with a wellearned victory over Austin Stacks, producing a performance of great skill and effort, to fully honour the memory of former player Ollie Favier, who tragically passed away last week. After an impeccably observed minutes silence in memory of Ollie, Glenflesk started well, with Darragh Roche scoring 2 early frees. More incisive play would lead to scores from Ian Roche and Dara O’Connor as Glenflesk pushed their lead to 4 points to no score after 6 minutes. The visitors eventually managed to get their hands on the ball, scoring 2 backto-back points, the second a fine score from Conor Horan, who was their chief scorer on the day. Corner back Jack Murphy then scored after a fine run forward, before 2 more Horan frees left the sides level after 15 minutes. Dylan Roche was then denied a goal by a good save from Mike Tansley. After good play by Darragh Roche and Jeff O’Donoghue, Dylan Roche then struck over a superb point with his left foot. As Glenflesk began to dominate midfield, with the pairing of John Kelleher and Tommy Bowler excelling, back-to-back 2 pointers from Bowl-

er and Darragh Roche pushed them into a 6-point lead. A 2 pointer from Greg Horan was followed by a 1 pointer from him, as the deficit was halved. Glenflesk though finished the half strong, with a 2-point free from Darragh Roche, plus another fine left footed effort from him, giving his side a 6-point half time lead. Stacks set about their work straight from the throw in. A Conor Horan free and a Ryan O’Driscoll point, which could have been a goal, reward for their quick start. 2 points from Roche and 1 from Bowler settled Glenflesk down again. Two superb saves from Mark Kelleher denied certain Stacks goals, while down the other end, Tansley again made a smart save to stop Glenflesk. With the match still far from over, Glenflesk attacked down the right-hand side of the field. Emmett Finnan’s quick pass found Darragh Roche. Roche broke free of his marker and passed to brother Dylan. He fired a hard low shot that evaded Tansley and went in off the post. Glenflesk now held a big lead as the final stages approached. When Bowler extended the lead to 9, it looked as if Glenflesk would pull away. Stacks though, weren’t finished it. A penalty from Cain Purcell reduced the deficit to 6. This was followed by another Conor Horan 2 pointer. Darragh Roche then scored a superb point after winning a high ball. Stack’s then cut the deficit back to 3 with scores from Gavin Casey and Sean Óg Brosnan. Glenflesk though, won the final knockout, and saw out the hard-earned victory. A greatly entertaining game, with both sides having periods of dominance. Glenflesk were worthy winners, with strong disciplined defending, great delivery of ball into the forward line, and great link up in the forwards, helping the team to victory, after a difficult week for the parish. Glenflesk: Darragh Roche 0-14 Tommy Bowler 0-3 Dylan Roche 1-01 Ian Roche 0-02 Dara O’Connor 0-01. Austin Stacks: Conor Horan 0-10 Greg Horan 0-03 Cian Purcell 1-02 Ryan O’Driscoll 0-01 Jack Murphy 0-01 Sean Óg Brosnan 0-01. In Division 6 Glenflesk had a good win away to Milltown Castlemaine. Final score 1:6 to 2:14.

TIM SCANNELL MEMORIAL: Unfortunately, our interest in the Tim Scannell Memorial Inter-Club Matchplay came to an end in Castleisland on Sunday morning as none of our three teams advanced to this Sunday's semi-finals. Our 3 team came the closest missing out by one on being the best of the runners-up in the three groups as they defeated Castleisland 1 by 4-2 on Sunday. The derby between our 1 and 2 sides was a tight affair with 1 getting a 3.5-2.5 win in the finish. Our 1 team were also second in their group. The club compliment the County Board on their new way of running the competition this year, particularly the App designed for it and wish the four Tralee teams well for the rest of the tournament. Muckross Rowing Club

MUCKROSS HOR: On Saturday last, the club was delighted to host the rescheduled Muckross Head OF the River event following the cancellation of the traditional December fixture in 2025 due to bad weather. In a radical change of fortune with the weather, the sun beamed down on the National Rowing Centre in Farran, Cork, where Muckross RC played host to the only time trial event that is held at the HQ of Irish rowing outside of regatta season. On the day, the club welcomed a total of 29 rowing clubs with over 450 crews racing. On the approach to regatta season, the event also featured a reduced course distance of 1950m and the revised format received great feedback. On the water, the club had a successful day with five wins. Congratulations to the Women’s J16 Quad (Marissa O’Connor, Cara Spillane, Julia Weglarz, Orla Forde), Men’s Intermediate Single (Cillian Leslie), Men’s J14 Quad (Daire Murphy, Cian Whitty, Max Dorrill, Joe Hickey), Women’s J14 Octuple (Lauren O’Donoghue, Sophie Culloty, Laura O’Sullivan, Lauren O’Sullivan, Madeleine Lynch, Maria Scanlon, Aoife Coffey, Maria Avila) and Women’s J16 Single (Lauren O’Donoghue). Killarney Judo Club

DUBLIN: Members of Killarney Judo Club travelled to Dublin on Sunday, March 22nd to take part in the National Judo Grading, an important milestone for athletes progressing on their journey towards achieving Black Belt status. Among those representing the club was Kevin Casey, who rejoined to the club after a number of years to resume his judo career and demonstrated that it is never too late to achieve success. Kevin successfully completed a demanding technical assessment, showcasing a wide range of throws to earn his Blue Belt. Two of the club’s rising young talents, Patrik Polubnak and James Maher, both aged 15, delivered impressive performances to earn their Brown Belts. One of the standout moments of the grading came when James executed a spectacular throw, lifting an opponent nearly twice his size clean into the air and earning a

perfect score from the examiners. The two teenagers will now spend the coming months preparing intensively as they set their sights on competing for their Black Belts this September. Also continuing her strong progress through the ranks is Ciara Forde, who is now just three contest wins away from achieving her Black Belt. Should she succeed, Ciara will become the 26th Black Belt in the proud history of the club. The club members were accompanied by coaches and supporters who made the trip to Dublin, highlighting the strong community spirit within the club. The success at the national grading marks another positive step forward for Killarney Judo Club as it continues to develop athletes of all ages and abilities. Their achievements reflect the dedication, discipline, and hard work that the sport of judo demands, values that remain at the heart of the club’s continued growth.
