Echoes of Killarney Past Following the success of the first two chapters of our trilogy, Echoes of Killarney Past and Echoes of Killarney Present, we are proud to present the final instalment of our trilogy The Echoes of Killarney Future. Jason Clifford Chairman, St. Patrick’s Festival Killarney

This year’s festival looks ahead to the generations who will shape the Killarney of tomorrow. It is a celebration of our young people, their creativity, their ambition and their vision for the future of our town. Killarney continues to evolve as a vibrant, welcoming and progressive destination. One that embraces sustainability, diversity, inclusivity, and opportunity for all. Our future lies in the energy and talent of our youth, and this year’s festival will highlight the diversity, skills and innovation that exist within our community. From sport and education to business, arts and culture, the next generation is already playing a vital role in shaping the future of Killarney. Future talent will be on main stage on Monday evening when we will be running a battle of the bands competition judged by Liam O’Connor and Oisin O’Connor who both just returned from Italy where they performed on the Alps for the Winter Olympics. The Rising will also be playing from 7.30pm - 9pm on the 16 in the festival zone proudly sponsored by Nespresso. Join us on March 14 at 12 noon for our Duck Dash on the Deenagh, proudly supporting Down Syndrome Kerry. We are also delighted to welcome back AbleFest for its second year on March 15, following the huge success of its debut last year. AbleFest is an inclusive arts and music

festival celebrating diversity and ensuring that everyone can enjoy the festival experience. The Festival Zone at New Street Car Park will once again come alive between 12 noon and 4pm with Jake Carter and his band performing on main stage, activities and entertainment for all. On St Patrick’s Day, the highlight of the weekend takes place as the St Patrick’s Festival Parade begins at 2pm, bringing colour, creativity and excitement to the streets of Killarney. This year’s parade will reflect the theme Echoes of Killarney Future, with participants showcasing their vision for the future of our town, our community and our environment. The celebrations will continue in the Festival Zone at New Street Car Park, where live music, entertainment from Burnchurch and Truly Diverse. Food courts and family activities will run throughout the afternoon, creating a vibrant atmosphere for locals and visitors alike. Don’t forget our charity Dunk Tank in aid of Kerry Stars where many well-known people from Killarney and Tadgh and Derry Fleming will be taking the plunge for a great cause. As we conclude the Echoes trilogy, we invite everyone to come together and celebrate the journey of Killarney honouring our past, embracing our present and looking forward with optimism to our future. We look forward to welcoming you all to St Patrick’s Festival Killarney 2026. For more information, visit www.stpatricksfestivalkillarney.ie or follow us on socials.

Johnny McGuire President of Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce

Killarney celebrates the future this year with the third and final instalment of the Echoes Trilogy, managed by our Festival Chairman Jason Clifford, who we want to thank for his time and huge commitment to St Patrick’s Festival over the last 3 years. We are delighted that Ablefest returns for a second year, the inclusive music and arts programme that our committed volunteers strive to deliver, with thanks to Shirley McGough and her team for this important event. The St Patrick’s Day Parade continues this year with contributions from over 50 groups, both local and interna-

tional, and we are so pleased that our wonderful volunteers continue to support the event – it would not be able to happen without their help. Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce wish to credit the officials and elected members of Killarney Municipal District, and by extension, Kerry County Council, as well as Failte Ireland who have supported the festival with vital funding for the whole of the Echoes Trilogy. As Killarney goes from strength to strength, we are proud to offer local people and visitors the opportunity to celebrate our national feast day alongside us and witness our own sense of pride and dedication to the town and its hard-working businesses.

Derreen Sports Complex aiming for early October 2026 opening The new sports complex at Derreen is on track to open in time for the 2026/2027 basketball season, which traditionally begins in early October. Members of St Paul’s Basketball Club visited the site last Saturday to view the ongoing progress and get an inside glimpse of what the finished facility will look like. The project is driven by the Kerry Stars Special Olympics Club, St Paul’s Basketball Club and Killarney Judo Club. The new complex is being built adjacent to the Killarney Celtic grounds and Killarney Legion GAA Club and will create a central sports hub in town. Cllr Niall ‘Botty O’Callaghan, a member of the St Paul’s club and a long-time supporter of the project, told the Killarney Advertiser: “The building is really coming to fruition for the whole community. The Depart-

ment of Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media have been outstanding in helping us with us with the paperwork and a big thanks goes to Minister Patrick O’Donovan. We are working really hard to have the hall up and running before next season. I can’t wait for St Paul’s, the Judo Club and the Kerry Stars to get up and running in our new hall.” The development represents a major addition to the sporting infrastructure in the area, providing a permanent home for several local clubs that have previously relied on various school halls and external venues. Once completed, the hall will serve as a high-spec hub for basketball, judo, and Special Olympics activities.

Missing Michael Fassbender Calls to extend Anseo Bus Service portrait found safe and well! to alleviate heavy summer traffic It was a mystery that had the whole town in a chokehold. Mr Fassbender was nowhere to be seen, it had everyone scratching their heads and asking: where did he go? While other news outlets were reporting that Michael Fassbender was on the missing list in Killarney this week, the Killarney Advertiser team decided to track him down on Tuesday morning. It didn’t take long as we found him well before lunchtime, breaking the news on our Facebook page. He was sitting outside of the cinema, sure where else would he be?

Cllr John O’Donoghue has requested that the range of the TFI Anseo bus service be extended to five kilometres ahead of the upcoming summer months to help ease congestion in Killarney town centre. Speaking at a recent Killarney Municipal District meeting, Cllr O’Donoghue said. "Notwithstanding the fact that it is a pilot project, given that the TII themselves have publicly announced what a huge success the Anseo Bus Service has been, that we write to them and request that its range be extended ahead of the summer months, preferably to 5km." He clarified

that his motion was not a criticism, but a way to enhance a "wonderful service" that has already been publicly acknowledged by transport authorities. The Anseo service, which launched in August last year, carried over 20,000 passengers in its first four months. Usage peaked in December with over 2,000 passengers in a single week. Cllr O’Donoghue argued that extending the current zone would allow residents in outlying villages to leave their cars at home, particularly as the town becomes "choked with traffic" during the peak tourist season.

National St Patrick’s Bank Holiday road safety campaign launched at Gleneagle As people across Ireland prepare to celebrate our national holiday, motorists are being urged to plan ahead and never drive under the influence of alcohol or other drugs. The appeal was issued by Minister of State Jerry Buttimer TD, the Road Safety Authority (RSA), and An Garda Síochána at the 2026 National Safer Roads Road Safety Conference and Exhibition at the Gleneagle Arena. An Garda Síochána will be carrying out an enhanced roads policing enforcement campaign over the Bank Holiday weekend from 7am March 12 to 7am on Wednesday March 18. This comes as international research indicates that drivers with a Blood Alcohol Concentration (BAC) between 50-80mg are between 5-10 times more likely to be involved in a fatal collision. Speaking at the Gleneagle, Jerry Buttimer

TD, Minister of State at the Department of Rural and Community Development, said: “St Patrick’s Day is our national day of celebration. It is a time for us to come together to celebrate the best of Ireland and the best of our local communities. However, we must all take responsibility and behave properly on our roads. It is never acceptable to drink or take drugs, and drive. We cannot put others’ lives, or our own lives at risk when driving. Where we see such behaviour, we must challenge it and call it out. I urge people to enjoy yourselves but also remember to make the right decisions. Don’t drink and drive, leave the car at home, make alternative travel plans. Please do not speed

Pictured at the launch today are Minister of State at the Department of Transport, Jerry Buttimer TD, An Garda Síochána Assistant Commissioner for Roads Policing and Community Engagement, Catharina Gunne, and Director of Research, Standards & Assurance at the Road Safety Authority, Michael Rowland. or use the phone while driving. Don’t be responsible for bringing devastation to your family, friends, and community.” Michael Rowland, Director of Research, Standards and Assurance at the RSA, added: “St Patrick’s Day is a time for celebration, but alcohol and driving must never mix. Every year we see the devastating consequences when someone gets behind the wheel after drinking. We are urging everyone to plan ahead – leave the car at home if you are drinking, organise a lift, and make sure you and your friends get home safely. We also want to remind pedestrians and cyclists that travelling while under the influence of alcohol increases their risk on the road.” Speaking ahead of the weekend, Assistant Commissioner Catharina Gunne, Roads Policing, stated: “St Patrick’s Weekend is a time of celebration, but it must not be a time of tragedy. Drink and drug driving remain among the leading

causes of death and serious injury on Irish roads. Our message is simple: if you are under the influence of an intoxicant do not drive. The risk is never worth it.” Assistant Commissioner Gunne added: “We want everyone to enjoy the festivities safely. Plan your night out. Use public transport, taxis, or designated drivers. Look out for friends and family. One poor decision behind the wheel can have devastating consequences for multiple lives.” Kerry County Council’s Road Safety Officer Declan Keogh concluded: “Road safety plays a key part in all our daily lives, and in every local community. Ahead of the Saint Patrick's Day celebrations, local authorities are urging all road users to be mindful of the risks while using the road and to think about the consequences which can result from a serious or fatal road traffic collision. Road safety is everyone’s responsibility, and we should all work together and protect each other.”

Warning over lithiumion battery hazards Killarney Fire and Rescue has issued an urgent safety warning regarding the charging of devices containing lithium-ion batteries. The alert covers a wide range of common household and professional items, including mobile phones, laptops, e-scooters, and modern power tools. Fire officers have highlighted that these batteries consist of several individual cells. If a battery begins to overheat while charging, it can trigger a process where one cell ignites the next in rapid succession, leading to a significant fire.

Killarney Fire and Rescue Officer Paudie Mangan explained that the service recently attended a local fire caused by a laptop that had been left to charge for an excessive period. The prolonged charging resulted in the battery cells overheating and starting the blaze. The fire service is particularly concerned about the practice of charging high-capacity batteries, such as those found in e-scooters and power tools, inside residential buildings. Tradespeople are also being warned not to leave tool batteries charging unattended for long periods.

“One fire we have attended was caused by an e-scooter charging in a cupboard under a stairs,” Officer Mangan stated. “Once the fire took off, the people had to

jump out windows as flames blocked the stairs. Things like e-scooters and power tools should not be charged inside the home.”

Raheen School to host 80s and 90s Disco at Revelles Raheen National School has announced the return of its popular 80s and 90s disco night, set to take place this Easter Saturday, April 4, at the Killarney Avenue Hotel.

Calls for urgent prioritisation of St Oliver’s NS project

Following a significant response to the event in 2025, the school’s Parents Association is reviving the celebration to raise funds for school initiatives. The night will feature a soundtrack curated by DJ Botty O’Callaghan, focusing on the hits and "slow sets" that defined the dancefloors of the 1980s and 1990s. Last year’s event drew attendees from across Ireland and the UK, many of whom gathered to reminisce about iconic local venues like Revelles and shared stories of first dates and reunions. Organisers expect a similar atmosphere

this year, providing a nostalgic experience for those who grew up with the music of these decades while introducing the era's unique social traditions to a new audience. The event is strictly for those aged 18 and over, with all proceeds going directly to the Raheen National School Parents Association. Tickets are priced at €20 and are currently available from the school, Parents Association members, and several local retailers, including the Killarney Avenue Hotel, Caragh Restaurant, O’Donoghue’s, Frankie’s in Barraduff, and the Top Oil Glenflesk Service Station. Tickets will also be available for purchase at the door on the night. For further information, contact Máire O’Leary at 086 3115869 or the school office at 087 1347581 during school hours.

Mayor of Killarney Municipal District, Councillor Martin Grady, has successfully passed a motion at the recent meeting of Killarney Municipal District calling on the Department of Education to prioritise the development project at St Oliver’s National School, Ballycasheen. The motion past with support from fellow Councillors with no objections to request the prioritisation. The motion follows the recent announcement by the Department of Education of 105 schools that are to be included in the upcoming two-year National Development Plan programme, with St Oliver’s National School among those listed. Councillor Grady has requested that Killarney Municipal District formally write to the Department seeking that the school be prioritised for the timely delivery of the overall project. He stressed that the development must include the provision of additional parking and dedicated dropoff and pick-up facilities. St Oliver’s National School is one of the largest schools in the region, with more than 700 pupils and over 100 staff members attending the Ballycasheen school each day. The lack of sufficient parking and proper drop-off and pick-up facilities around the school has created serious congestion during peak times. Councillor Grady warned that the current situation is both unsafe and unfair for everyone involved. “As a parent who drops children to the school myself, I see first-hand the chaos that takes place every morning and afternoon,” said Councillor Grady. “There is gridlock, double parking and simply no-

where safe to drop off children. The situation has become extremely difficult.” He noted that there have already been a number of minor accidents at the location, along with many near misses, raising serious concerns for the safety of pupils, staff, parents and local residents. “It is unsafe for the children, unsafe for the parents who are trying to drop them off, and unsafe for the staff who work there. It is also very unfair on local residents who are dealing with this level of congestion every day,” he said. Councillor Grady emphasised that he has raised this issue on several occasions and is again urging the Department of Education to treat the matter with urgency. “With over 700 pupils and more than 100 staff attending the school daily, proper infrastructure must be put in place. I am calling on the Department to prioritise St Oliver’s National School, Ballycasheen, in the two-year National Development Plan programme and ensure that additional parking and a safe, dedicated drop-off and pick-up facility are delivered as part of the project.” The motion was supported at the meeting, and Killarney Municipal District will now write to the Department of Education requesting that the project be progressed as a priority.

Park Road roadworks, 47 years ago! This week, the Killarney Advertiser team were looking through old records of the magazine, and we stumbled across this story from 1979. It was published on March 23, almost 47 years to today’s date. We thought it was quite the coincidence, given the current roadworks happening on Park Road at

the moment. The current roadworks, which are part of the active travel and road resurfacing project, were originally scheduled to be completed before Christmas; however, they are running behind schedule. Back in February, it was indicated that the works wouldn’t finish until March, like the article in 1979, wouldn’t it be great if it was finished before Easter?

Jessie Buckley’s family flies to LA in style Jessie Buckley’s family flew to Los Angeles in style ahead of the big Oscars weekend, thanks to Aer Lingus. Her parents, Marina and Tim, along with her sister Lily, departed Dublin Airport on Wednesday afternoon, bound for Hollywood to support Jessie at one of the most prestigious nights in global cinema. The special sendoff marked the

beginning of a momentous journey as they travel to support Jessie at the most prestigious night in global cinema. Aer Lingus described moments like these as “a milestone” for the nominees, their families, and for Ireland as a whole. Donal Moriarity, Chief Corporate Affairs Officer at Aer Lingus said it was a privilege to play their part in such a special chapter for Irish film. Donal wished Jessie and all of the Irish nominees the very best of luck.

Town gets behind Jessie Buckley ahead of Oscars night Killarney is united in support of local star Jessie Buckley as she prepares to attend the 98th Academy Awards in Hollywood this Sunday night. Following a record-breaking awards season for her performance in Hamnet, the 36-year-old actress is at the centre of national attention, with the result expected to reach Ireland at approximately 4am on Monday morning. Mayor of Killarney, Martin Grady, expressed the pride of the community, stating that the entire town is behind her as she takes to the global stage. “She is an inspiration,” Mayor Grady said. “She has done her town, county and country proud, no matter the outcome we are all very proud of her and her achievements which will encourage more youngsters into acting and the

arts. At 36 years old she has achieved an enormous amount.” The nomination marks a significant milestone in Buckley’s career, which began with local theatre and national talent competitions before transitioning to critically acclaimed roles on both stage and screen. Having already secured a BAFTA and a Golden Globe for this role, she is widely considered a frontrunner for the Best Actress title. Local businesses and residents are preparing to mark the occasion, with many planning to tune in during the early hours of Monday to witness the ceremony.

Cyberbullying concerns addressed by Kelly in Brussels Seán Kelly MEP (Ireland South) has praised "the courage and determination shown by Jackie Fox", a mother from Ireland who addressed MEPs in the European Parliament, Strasbourg on Tuesday, urging the EU to do more to prevent and criminalise cyberbullying. Jackie Fox successfully campaigned for a law against online bullying in Ireland which was enacted in 2021 and is known as 'Coco's Law' after Jackie's young daughter, Nicole, who tragically died from suicide in 2018 after experiencing horrific bullying. On Tuesday, MEPs from 27 countries and different political groups listened intently to Jackie as she told Nicole's story. Jackie gave an incredible, emotional speech urging the EU to act to prevent more damage to young people and particularly warned of the dangers that AI can pose in this context", MEP Kelly said.

"The EPP Group of which Fine Gael is a member of has long called for online bullying to be criminalised across the EU. It was an honour to have Jackie address the EPP Group meeting on Tuesday as well. Given that in Ireland, there have been over 240 prosecutions already under Coco's Law, the courage and determination shown by Jackie Fox is saving and protecting the lives of other young people. She deserves full credit for her campaign and we in Fine Gael and the EPP Group will continue to support her at EU level", Mr Kelly said.

Resident hits out at "sticking plaster" spend on Listry Bridge A Listry resident has slammed Kerry County Council’s latest safety funding for Listry Bridge, labelling the repeated small-scale spending as "insanity." The criticism from Brendan O’Shea follows last week’s announcement that €100,000 has been allocated for interim safety measures at the notorious bottleneck. The Council confirmed the funds will cover a reduced speed limit, upgraded signage, new road linings, extended anti-skid surfacing, and parapet repairs. However, Mr O’Shea, a long-time campaigner for safety improvements at the site, argues that these measures fail to address the core issue: that the bridge remains the only point between Killarney and Dingle where two cars cannot pass. "The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result," Mr O’Shea said. "Over the years there have been announcements of funding of €30k, €50k, €80k, €100k on a number of occasions, €250k one time before an election, and

the latest is another €100k. Each and every time, it's for new signage, anti-skid surfacing, and repairs." He pointed out that the Council has encouraged significant residential development in Milltown, leading to a major increase in daily commuters using the bridge to reach Killarney. Mr O’Shea also questioned the county’s infrastructure priorities, contrasting the lack of a bridge replacement with the €7 million refurbishment of Ashe Hall in Tralee. He suggested that Killarney is being left behind in terms of major projects compared to neighbouring counties. "If the Killarney bypass eventually gets completed, then perhaps we'll have a few euro left over to replace Listry bridge. Let's stop with the ridiculous sticking plaster spending in the meantime," he added. The Council maintains that the current €100,000 spend is necessary for "interim safety measures" to manage traffic flow and improve grip on the approaches to the bridge.

The Leader of Fine Gael in the European Parliament, Seán Kelly MEP, is pictured meeting Irish woman Jackie Fox at the parliament in Strasbourg alongside fellow Fine Gael MEPs Regina Doherty and Nina Carberry.

IS HISTORY REPEATING ITSELF 50 YEARS LATER? | By Clodagh NAGLE

Today two weeks ago, it was an ordinary Friday. Everybody was going about their day, completely unaware of what was about to happen. On Saturday, February 28, the United States and Israel launched an attack on Iran, throwing the world into complete chaos. In less than a fortnight, we have experienced the start of a war in the Middle East, a sharp rise in fuel and oil prices and a global crisis which affects everybody. It has disrupted everyday life for millions of people around the world. Fuel prices are the highest they have been since 2022, with fears mounting that the price could rise even further in the weeks ahead. However, in the 1970s, the very same thing happened, the world faced the same uncertainty we are experiencing right now. To understand where we are now, let’s rewind to over 50 years ago, to the fuel crisis of 1973 and 1979. OIL / FUEL SHORTAGES IN THE 1970S The first oil and fuel crisis happened in 1973, and has often been described as bringing the country to a standstill. It followed the outbreak of the Yom Kippur War in the Middle East, which led to a reduction in oil supplies, with around 25% of exports to the West cut. As a result, Irish motorists had to fill out application forms for petrol, and drivers were urged to reduce their fuel usage by 10%. It took several months for the supply to return to normal. 6 years later, another crisis struck. There was a drop in oil production following the Iranian Revolution in 1979, which triggered an energy crisis around the world. The revolution was a series of events that led to the overthrow of the Pahlavi dynasty. As a result, the world was majorly affected by the repercussions of the revolution, including Ireland, which came close to running out of oil, according to State Papers. RTE Archive footage shows cars queuing for petrol at filling stations across Dublin, which was replicated across the country. Fuel sales were restricted per customer and garages operated on limited opening hours. Drivers were asked to cut back driving by 5% while motorists could only purchase 5 pounds worth of fuel. PRICES TODAY Today, fuel prices are beginning to soar past the €2 mark, a price that many people fear.

What happens if it continues to rise further? Does it have the potential to reach €3? Right now, France and Germany are already seeing an eye-watering price of €2.50 at the pumps, raising concerns among Irish motorists that we could see similar costs here soon. According to Oilprices.ie, the cost of 500L of home heating oil is €870.98, a dramatic rise of almost €400 in the past two weeks. The big question is: how does it end, where does it end, and will it end? History has taught us that wars can come to an end, but not without repercussions for the ordinary people. The politicians in power make the decisions which affect the everyday life of ordinary people who are just trying to go about their lives.

GOVERNMENT RESPONSE (OR LACK OF) It is an issue dividing the nation. Last week, Michael Martin warned retailers against ‘price gouging’, a term that has become very popular since the pandemic. This caused outrage among retailers who argued that they have no choice and are operating at a loss to avoid public backlash. Meanwhile, consumers are aghast at the price of fuel and blame both retailers and the Government. However, while the Government have commented on the current crisis, we haven’t heard much from them in terms of solutions and what will happen next. Up to 65% of the price we pay at the pumps is tax and levies. Why not deduct the tax to help families afford the cost of fuel? Because once taxes are lowered, it would be difficult to raise them again amid the current cost of living crisis. With a carbon tax rise set to come into effect on May 1, it will be interesting to see if it will be implemented. Simon Harris recently welcomed the news that the International Energy Agency was releasing oil reserves which he says, will lower prices. It’s yet to be reflected at the pumps. It's not just the oil and fuel price that will be affected. The cost of everything will begin to rise without any intervention from the powers that be. In a climate that is barely surviving as it is, any further price rises are completely unsustainable. Right now, the eyes are on the pumps, but down the line we could see a rippling effect across all sectors.

Beaufort’s Paudie Coffey eyes bright future after Glór Tíre final Local country music singer Paudie Coffey has expressed his gratitude to the 'Kerry Gang' following his appearance in the Grand Final of TG4’s Glór Tíre on Tuesday night. The 26-year-old Beaufort man was met with a wave of support from fans who travelled to the live broadcast wearing Kerry GAA jerseys and carrying homemade banners featuring his face.

“The Kerry Gang will be one of my favourite memories from all this,” Paudie said following the result. “It was great to see them here, because it just helped me take the final as a normal gig, because these are the people who are normally at my gigs every weekend. When I see them, it basically calms my nerves, and that’s a good thing. I'm very lucky to have them.”

During the live final, Paudie delivered performances of the Kenny Rogers classic The Gambler and Isla Grant’s We'll Meet Again My Friends. While the title of Glór Tíre Champion ultimately went to County Down singer Jordan McPolin, the experience has significantly boosted Paudie’s profile on a national level. Despite the result, the Beaufort singer is confident that his career is only moving forward. “This certainly won't be the end of the road,” he stated. “With Glór Tíre, I’ve gained huge experience. What we're trying to build up and what we're trying to get now are the big gigs.”

Over 650 tonnes of waste collected since 2012 The 14th annual County Clean Up is set to take place on April 11 with registration officially opening this coming Monday. Since the initiative began in 2012, volunteers across Kerry have collected and disposed of over 650 tonnes of waste,

filling almost 75,000 bags of litter to date. The event, supported by KWD Recycling and Kerry County Council, has become a staple of the local community calendar. Kerry GAA legend Colm ‘The Gooch’ Cooper returns as the County Clean Up Ambassador for 2026, helping to lead

the call for individuals, schools, sporting groups, and businesses to get involved. Cathaoirleach of Kerry County Council, Cllr Michael Foley, highlighted the unique scale of the project. He urged residents’ associations and voluntary groups to gather litter along both major routes and local country roads to ensure

the county is kept "spick and span." Noel O’Reilly from KWD Recycling noted that the day is a vital part of the fight against illegal dumping. He stressed the importance of groups signing up early to obtain their clean-up packs and to coordinate exactly where collected litter should be left for disposal.

Exhibition and lecture on foundations of Fianna Fáil A widely acclaimed exhibition on the origins and early years of Fianna Fáil in Kerry will open at Killarney Library on Tuesday for a three-week period and will coincide with a free public lecture on the subject at the library on March 26.

Film Festival launches new monthly film club The Kerry International Film Festival (KIFF) has announced the launch of the KIFF Film Club, a new initiative bringing modern Irish cinema and documentaries to the big screen at Cinema Killarney. Supported by Screen Ireland through the Audience Development Fund, the club aims to foster local audience engagement with high-quality domestic filmmaking. The series will debut on Wednesday, March 25, at 8pm with a screening of Christy. The film arrives in Killarney following significant critical success, having recently secured IFTA awards for both Best Film and Best Director. Set on the northside of Cork city, the drama follows the titular character as he moves in with his estranged brother and begins to find his place within the local community. The club’s second instalment is sched-

uled for April 22 at 8pm, featuring the documentary Gerry Adams: A Ballymurphy Man. This production offers a perspective on the conflict in Northern Ireland through previously unseen footage and photographs, alongside exclusive interviews. Tickets for the screenings are priced at €8 per person, plus a booking fee. As part of the club experience, attendees will be offered a complimentary cup of tea or coffee before each film begins. Tickets for the March and April screenings are currently available for purchase through the official festival website at kerryfilmfestival.com.

This year marks the centenary of the foundation of the party in 1926 and the exhibition, presented by historian Owen O’Shea, focuses on how the party developed and grew in Kerry in the late 1920s and early 1930s. The exhibition is called Soldiers of Destiny, Fianna Fáil in Kerry 1926-1933 and is supported by a Commemorations Bursary from the Royal Irish Academy. It was officially opened by An Taoiseach Micheál Martin recently at Tralee Library. Mr Martin said the exhibition “has provided a deep insight into the foundations and rapid growth of one of democratic Europe’s most successful political parties.” Owen will deliver a talk on the same subject on Thursday, 26 March at Killarney Library at 7pm as part of the programme of lectures from the Kerry Archaeological and Historical Society. The lecture is free and open to members of the public. “The foundation of Fianna Fáil 100 years ago was a transformative moment in Irish politics and represented a new phase of Civil War politics in Ireland. In this, its centenary year, I am presenting the story of the party in Kerry where its organisational and electoral successes were without parallel in this period,” said Owen O’Shea. “Éamon de Valera’s party set about es-

tablishing a network of branches in Kerry with enormous speed and the Fianna Fáil vote in the constituency grew rapidly from 33% in 1927 to 68% in 1933.” The seven TDs who represented Kerry during those years were Denis Daly, Fred Crowley, Tom McEllistrim, William O’Leary, Thomas O’Reilly and Jack Flynn. Their stories are being shared for the first time as are many of the election posters and political material from the time. “I am very grateful to the Royal Irish Academy for funding this exhibition and I hope it will attract anyone with an interest in Irish history and politics,” he added. It will be open at Killarney Library during library opening hours until March 31.

The 5th class students in Fossa National School held a charity bake sale in aid of the Jack and Jill Foundation. The support from the students, parents and staff was incredible. Due to the generosity of the wider community, €1,040.00 was raised for the Jack and Jill Foundation. A cheque was presented to Siobhan Reen (Jack and Jill Foundation).

Killarney Women’s Shed fundraiser for Philippine Disaster Relief

The Killarney Women’s Shed partnered with the local Filipino community on Tuesday to host a successful charity auction of up-cycled furniture.

The event was organised to provide financial aid following the dual natural disasters that struck the Philippines late last year. The fundraising effort follows a devastating sequence of events that began on September 30, 2025, when a record-breaking 6.9-magnitude earthquake hit the region. This was followed four weeks later by Typhoon Tino, which brought winds reaching 185 km per hour. The disasters resulted in 269 deaths and the displacement of over 700,000 people. Many families continue to live in temporary shelters, such as tents and schools, as the local infrastructure and agricultural lands were destroyed. The charity auction featured various piec-

es of furniture that had been restored and decorated by members of the Women’s Shed. Attendees bid on these unique items and participated in a raffle to boost the total funds raised for the recovery efforts. Mayor of Killarney Cllr Martin Grady attended the event and said “ I would like to sincerely thank everyone who supported the event.Thank you to those who donated pieces of furniture, those who decorated and upcycled the items, those who bid on the pieces, those who purchased raffle tickets, and everyone who helped out in any way. From those who organised the event to those who made the tea and welcomed guests every contribution played an important role.”

Judo Club secures 19 medals at 51st Galway Open tournament A group of 21 club members and their families travelled to compete at the 51st Galway Open on Saturday, an event that drew over 350 competitors from across the country.

Cycling Club launches mentoring programme for Ring of Kerry

The high attendance ensured a day of intense competition across all divisions. In a performance that coincided with International Women’s Week, the club’s female athletes delivered a series of standout displays, securing gold medals in five separate categories. Sisters Michelle and Danielle Walsh both topped the podium in their respective divisions, while Ciara Forde also claimed a gold medal. The male competitors faced equally stiff

opposition, with some categories featuring pools of up to 15 players. Adam Tomlinson earned a fifth-place finish in the largest group of the day, showcasing a diverse range of throws and turnovers. Ryan Tomlinson also performed well, bringing home a bronze medal. By the end of the competition, the club had achieved an impressive total of 19 medals, consisting of six gold, two silver, and eleven bronze. Beyond the competitive action, the club also contributed to the official running of the tournament. Patrik Polubnak and Shaun Hester were in action on the mats as they continue to develop their technical skills as referees.

Killarney Cycling Club has announced the return of its popular Adult Mentoring Programme, set to begin on April 2. The initiative is specifically designed for adults aiming to complete the 180km Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle or those who wish to become more comfortable with the technical aspects of group riding. The 10-week programme is structured to remove the intimidation factor often associated with joining a cycling club. The initial phase takes place indoors at the club’s room in St Mary’s Parish Hall (V93HX44). These first two Thursday sessions utilise static bikes, providing a controlled environment where participants can receive personalised coaching on bike fit, gear selection, and road etiquette before moving to open roads. “Our goal is to build confidence as much as fitness,” says Dan O’Connor of Killarney Cycling Club. “Whether you’re eyeing Moll’s Gap or just want to feel safer on the road, we provide the technical foun-

dation and the community spirit to get you there.” Following the indoor sessions on April 2 and 9, the programme transitions to eight consecutive Wednesday evening road rides. These guided outdoor sessions will focus on building stamina and group skills, gradually increasing in distance from an initial 20km to a 70km finish. Experienced club mentors will lead every session, ensuring a focus on safety and the "rules of the road." Participants are required to have a roadworthy bike and a helmet. For safety during the evening rides, front and rear lights are essential, along with a spare tube and a water bottle. Those interested in taking part are encouraged to register early by contacting Fiona at 085 789 7725 or Seán at 086 395 6079.

Kilcummin raises €8,600 for Comfort for Chemo Two fundraising events held at Kilcummin GAA Club in January have raised a total of €8,615 for the Comfort for Chemo charity. The funds were generated through the club's annual "Pink Night" and a 31-card tournament held in memory of local clubman Dermot Moynihan. Organiser Geraldine Pigott noted that patrons were extremely generous throughout both events. She expressed

particular gratitude to all the sponsors for their donations and the numerous prizes provided for the fundraisers. Mary Horgan and Brid O’Connor of Comfort for Chemo recently accepted the cheque at the club. They acknowledged the significant efforts of the organizers and thanked the local community for their continued generosity. Credit Union launches Social Impact Report highlighting community value Killarney Credit Union has officially released its latest Social Impact Report, detailing the specific ways the member-owned cooperative has supported the local economy and residents across South and East Kerry over the past year. The document showcases the organisation’s commitment to providing accessible financial services while reinvesting directly into the community.

The report highlights a significant level of local support, including over €60,000 invested in community initiatives, charities, and sponsorships. On the lending front, the credit union issued 2,842 loans totalling €27.1 million to help members fund homes, education, and small businesses. Sustainability was also a major focus, with €6.2 million paid out in Green Loans to assist members with affordable funding for eco-friendly

home and transport initiatives. These efforts contributed to the credit union being named the Members Choice Credit Union of the Year last October. “Our credit union exists to serve people, not profit,” said Mark Murphy, CEO. “This Social Impact Report demonstrates the real value of the credit union model — keeping money in the community, supporting members through every stage of life, and helping build a

stronger, more resilient local economy.” The report further reflects the institution’s dedication to responsible lending and financial inclusion. Bernard Hourihan, Chairperson of Killarney Credit Union, noted that every loan and savings account represents an opportunity to make a positive difference, explaining that the report captures how cooperative finance strengthens the local area. Killarney Credit Union continues to operate as a financial cooperative serving the people of South and East Kerry by providing services designed for local needs. The full Social Impact Report is now available for members and the public to view at www.killarneycu.ie/community/social-impact.

Irish Olympic champion Ronnie Delany passes away There was deep sadness following the death of Olympic champion Ronnie Delany, who was one of the most iconic figures in Irish sporting history and a lifelong contributor to the Olympic movement. Delany secured his place in sporting history when he won gold in the 1500m at the 1956 Summer Olympics. At just 21 years of age, he delivered one of the greatest performances in Irish Olympic history, producing a dramatic late surge to win in an Olympic record time of 3:41.2 and claim Ireland’s first Olympic track and field gold medal. Born in Arklow, Co. Wicklow and raised in Dublin, Delany emerged through Crusaders Athletic Club before continuing his career at Villanova University in the United States, where he became one of the most successful collegiate runners of his era, winning multiple NCAA titles. He also won bronze in the 1500m at the 1958 European Athletics Championships and enjoyed a remarkable run of success on the international circuit. Beyond his achievements on the track, Delany remained deeply committed to Irish sport and the Olympic movement throughout his life. He served as President of the Irish Olympians Association until recent years, continuing to champion the role of Olympians in Irish society and supporting the next generation of ath-

letes. Lochlann Walsh, the President of the Olympic Federation of Ireland, paid tribute to the sporting star saying he was a defining figure in Irish sporting history and one of Ireland’s greatest Olympians. He recalled: “His extraordinary victory in Melbourne in 1956 remains one of the most iconic moments in Team Ireland's history. At this time our thoughts and prayers are with Ronnie’s family.” The Olympic Federation of Ireland extended its sincere condolences to Ronnie Delany’s family, friends, former teammates and the wider athletics community at this difficult time.

Reminder for Kerry people to monitor their hearing Kerry people are being reminded to check their hearing, which is a vital part of our overall wellbeing.

ALRIGHT, THAT DOES IMPRESS US MUCH!

It connects to conversation, laughter, music and everyday sounds. Yet because hearing loss often develops gradually, many people don’t realise there is an issue until it begins to affect their confidence, relationships and quality of life. Ignoring the early signs, turning up the television, asking people to repeat themselves, struggling in group conversations, can lead to increased isolation and even impact mental wellbeing. Early detection makes a significant difference. Audiology Medical Services encourages adults across Kerry to prioritise their hearing health. Their clinics on St. Brendan's Road in Tralee and Killarney GP, makes expert audiology care even more accessible for the local community. Leading the service at these clinics are an experienced

audiology team, led by Director of Audiology Jessica Lewis, who are dedicated to providing personalised, professional and compassionate care. Every hearing assessment is thorough, unrushed and tailored to the individual’s needs. Audiology Medical Services is now offering ‘Free Adult Hearing Tests’ and ‘Free Hearing Aids’, up to a value of €1,000, to any person that is eligible under the PRSI Treatment Benefit Scheme. More people than ever qualify for this grant, including those who are employed, self-employed, or retired, as long as you or your spouse/ civil partner have the required PRSI contributions. A simple Free Adult Hearing Test could be the first step towards hearing life more clearly. A traditional masterclass at Gathering in Gleneagle The Gleneagle Hotel became the epicenter of Irish culture last weekend as the 2026 Gathering Festival of Traditional Irish Music and Arts marked its 25th anniversary. From March 4 to 8, the venue hosted a concentrated program of concerts, céilís, and workshops, drawing hundreds of musicians and dancers from across the globe. A major focal point of the festival was the

celebration of the Sliabh Luachra style. Legendary accordion player Johnny Reidy and the Neily O’Connor Céilí Band headlined the ballroom events, where the floor remained packed for the hallmark Sliabh Luachra and West Kerry sets. These sessions were complemented by intensive set-dancing workshops led by Pat Murphy and John 'The Leaper' Lynch, focusing specifically on the local polka and slide traditions of the Cork and Kerry border.

St Brigid’s students showcase farming expertise Four students from St Brigid’s Presentation Secondary School, travelled to Croke Park last Friday, to exhibit at the 2026 Certified Irish Angus Schools’ Competition. Amy Fitzgerald, Naoise O’Connor, Megan O’Reilly, and Hannah Kelliher represented their school and county at the prestigious national event. The competition, which is run in association with industry partners ABP and Kepak, challenges secondary school students to rear five Irish Angus calves. Throughout the project, participants must demonstrate a deep understanding of the care, welfare, and technical attention required to pro-

duce high-quality beef for the consumer market. The St Brigid’s team presented their research and innovative ideas to a panel of judges, competing against schools from across the country. The initiative aims to provide students with practical experience in the agri-food sector while highlighting the sustainability and quality of the Irish Angus breed. Following the exhibition, the judges will select five schools that best demonstrate a comprehensive grasp of the project and creative thinking. The successful finalists will be presented with their own Irish Angus calves at the National Ploughing Championships in September later this year.

St Brigid's Minor Football team recorded an excellent victory in the Munster A Semi-Final against Coláiste Dún Iascaigh, Cahir last Friday which was played in the Mallow GAA Complex on a beautiful sunny day. the team showed great determination and resilience to fight their way back into the game. Displaying strong teamwork and commitment, the girls closed the gap and ultimately secured victory by the narrowest of margins — a single point. It was a fantastic team performance and a well-deserved congratulations to all involved and best of luck to the team in the upcoming Munster Final.

Kerry Mountain Rescue unveils INEOS Grenadier rescue unit Kerry Mountain Rescue Team (KMRT) officially launched its new state-of-the-art rescue vehicle on Friday, significantly upgrading their ability to reach casualties in the county’s most unforgiving terrain. Funded through the Community Recognition Fund, the new INEOS Grenadier units were specifically chosen for their rugged 4x4 capabilities and 'built-forpurpose' design. Unlike standard commercial vehicles, these Grenadiers have undergone extensive technical modifications to meet the demands of search and Photo: Photography and Design By Molly.

rescue operations on the MacGillycuddy’s Reeks and surrounding mountains. The vehicles are engineered for extreme conditions, featuring a 3.5-tonne towing capacity and an integrated cable winch for recovery operations. To handle the rocky and often flooded terrain of the Kerry highlands, the units are equipped with auxiliary power systems and enhanced off-road suspension. The investment ensures that KMRT volunteers have the most modern equipment available as they continue to provide 24/7 emergency cover for hillwalkers and climbers across the southwest.

The Scooby Doo Mystery Machine ready for St Patrick’s Day Parade The Killarney Valley Classic and Vintage Club is putting the finishing touches on its latest project, a fullscale recreation of the iconic 'Mystery Machine' from the Scooby-Doo franchise. The van is set to make its highly anticipated public debut at the Killarney St Patrick's Day parade this Tuesday. The project involved a complete restoration of a Toyota LiteAce van, which was transformed into the world-famous cartoon vehicle. The club received significant support from Kellihers Toyota, who assisted in sourcing the necessary parts to get the vintage Japanese van back on the road.

The Mystery Machine first appeared on television in 1969 in the animated series Scooby-Doo, Where Are You! and quickly became one of the most recognisable vehicles in pop culture. Known for its distinct psychedelic bright blue and green paintwork with orange flower decals, the original design was inspired by 1960s panel vans. Members of the Killarney Valley Classic and Vintage Club have spent months ensuring the replica is as faithful to the Hanna-Barbera original as possible. The club is well known for its creative restoration projects, and this latest build is expected to be a major highlight for children and families lining the parade route.

All-Electric Toyota C-HR+ debuts at Kelliher’s Toyota Tralee The all-new battery electric Toyota C-HR+ has officially arrived at Kelliher’s Toyota Tralee, marking a significant expansion of the brand's electric vehicle lineup in Kerry. To celebrate the launch, the dealership is hosting a dedicated test drive event running until March 21, allowing local motorists to experience the new model first-hand. The C-HR+ features a 77 kWh battery that provides a competitive driving range of up to 606km on a single charge. Toyota is backing this technology with its Electric Battery Extended Care Program, which offers coverage for up to 10 years or one million kilometres, provided the vehicle undergoes an annual battery health check. This includes a guarantee that the battery will retain at least 70% of its capacity over the 10-year period, supported by the original eight-year manufacturing warranty.

Pricing for the new electric model starts at €42,160 or from €374 per month through Toyota Easy PCP Finance. For the month of March, Kelliher’s is offering an introductory incentive where customers can choose between a €2,000 TradeIn Booster or a low 3.9% APR finance rate. The team at Kelliher’s noted that this model combines the established design language of the C-HR with the latest EV innovations, making it a viable option for both daily commutes and longer journeys across the county. Motorists interested in the new electric SUV can book a test drive via the dealership website or by visiting the Tralee showroom during the event.

Nagle named clerk of the course for Historic rally: In a poignant move for local motorsport, Paul Nagle has been officially appointed as the Clerk of the Course for the 2026 Killarney Historic Rally this November. The decision was confirmed following Tuesday night’s meeting of Killarney and District Motor Club. The appointment brings the event full circle. The Killarney Historic Rally was founded 30 years ago, in 1996, by Paul’s late father, Maurice Nagle. Maurice identified a gap in the winter calendar and built the event into what is now the premier historic rally in Ireland. Paul, a five-time WRC event winner, currently serves as an FIA Safety Delegate on the World Rally Championship circuit. Photo: Sportfile

KNOW YOUR RIGHTS

Consumer Issues: Refund, Repair or Replacement At this time of year many of us will be spending a lot more time shopping either on-line or in the shops in our local towns or cities therefore it is important that shoppers are aware of their consumer rights. What should you do if you’re not satisfied with the quality of a product or service? If you feel that a product is faulty or you are not happy with a service, you should: • Return the item to the seller (not the manufacturer) • Act as soon as you can – a delay can indicate that you have accepted faulty products • Don’t attempt to repair the item yourself or give it to anyone else to repair it • Make sure you have proof of purchase, for example a receipt or credit card statement • For services, keep all evidence of damage caused by poor work, for example take photos. • If a product is faulty within 6 months of purchase it is assumed the problem existed when you received it. Do I have a 'right to redress' if I purchase a faulty product? If you have a problem with something you have bought it is always the seller who must put things right. If something you bought turns out to be faulty, you can decide to get a repair or a replacement. You also have a legal right to return something faulty if the issue occurs within 30 days. You can return the product and get a full refund If you opt for a repair or replacement, the seller must repair or replace the product for free, within a reasonable time and without significant inconvenience to you. A reasonable time means the shortest possible time to fix the issue. For a replacement, you must get the same or a similar product. The seller must cover any extra installation costs for the replacement. If it is not possible or too expensive for the seller to resolve the issue, you have the right to either a price reduction or refund. You have the right to end the contract and get a refund where: • The seller has not offered a repair or replacement • The fault is serious • The seller cannot fix the issue within a reasonable time • You told the seller you needed the product for a specific date and the seller agreed to this • The same or another issue happens again after the seller repaired or re-

placed the product If you are unable to find a resolution you may consider taking a claim against the seller using the small claims procedure. For cross-border disputes within the EU, you can use the European small claims procedure. You can get more information about this from your local CIC. Are there some situations where I cannot avail of a refund, repair or replacement? You may have no grounds for redress if: • You were informed about the defect before you bought the item - for example, the goods were marked ‘shop-soiled’ or the car dealer told you a part needed replacing on a second-hand vehicle • The damage is caused by your own misuse or negligence – if the fault appears six months after it was received, you may have to prove that it was not caused by you • You made a mistake when buying the item – for example, buying a black dress instead of navy or entering the wrong dates for a flight • The fault is superficial and you examined the item before you bought it and should have seen the defect Q. If I buy something in a shop but change my mind about it later, can I return the item to the shop and get a refund? You are not automatically entitled to a refund when returning an item you bought in a shop because you have simply changed your mind. If there is nothing wrong with the item, then, as I mentioned earlier, you have no legal right to return the goods. Whether or not you can get your money back will depend on the seller’s returns policy. However, many sellers voluntarily allow customers to return or replace goods during a certain time period. The seller may offer a refund, exchange or credit note as a goodwill gesture. For this reason, you should check what the seller’s returns policy is before you buy. If the seller accepts returns, then there is usually an obligation that: • You make sure the items are in good condition • The original labels and tags are attached • You can provide proof of purchase (for example, a receipt) However, you have a right to change your mind and cancel when you buy online, over the phone, by mail order or on your doorstep (known as distance contracts). The reason is that you do not enter into the contract in person and you cannot check the products or service before you buy. Therefore, you have a ‘cooling off

period’ where you can change your mind and get a refund. The cooling off period ends 14 days after you receive the goods or service. For doorstep sales, you have 30 days from when the contract was agreed to cancel. Sometimes you do not have a cooling-off period, and the seller must tell you this before you buy. The European Consumer Centre Ireland has a useful letter template for returning products bought online within the cancellation period. What protection is there for on-line shoppers to avoid being scammed? There is a multi-agency initiative called "CheckMyLink", which is a tool that will quickly and easily inform consumers of the legitimacy of a website to help them shop in confidence. It is managed by Cyber Skills, in partnership with ScamAdviser and An Garda Síochána. Shoppers simply need to visit check.cyberskills.ie and enter the address (URL) of the website they’re looking to buy from and "CheckMyLink" will advise if it is a safe place to shop in the form of a high-level report that’ll be generated in just a few seconds. If the site comes back as being legitimate' you can have confidence that it’s a safe site to transact with. You should also check website security by looking for the closed padlock symbol and ‘https://’ in the address bar. If I am scammed on-line, is there any hope of getting my money back? You might be able to get your money back, depending on what happened and how you paid the scammer. If you notice an unauthorised transaction on your account, contact your bank immediately. In most cases, your bank must refund you for unauthorised payments. If it was a debit card, credit card or PayPal payment, you should request a transaction reversal through 'chargeback' from your bank or credit card provider. The Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (CCPC) has more information about chargeback. If it was a bank transfer, you should act quickly by contacting your bank because bank transfers are difficult to trace. However, if you used a money transfer service, it is unlikely you will be able to get your money back if you used a wire service. It is also unlikely you would get money back if you used vouchers or gift cards for payment. What are my rights when an order is delayed or not delivered? The seller must deliver your product to you either within 30 days of buying them

(unless you agreed a different date) or on the date you agreed with them If the seller does not deliver the product as agreed in the contract or within 30 days, you can request a new delivery date. You can insist that all items you bought in the one transaction are delivered at once. The seller cannot make you accept deliveries in instalments. You can end the contract if the seller cannot or refuses to deliver within the new time frame you request or a new delivery date is no longer suitable for you, for example, you needed the product for a specific date or event You must tell the business you are using your right to end your contract for non-delivery. The business must give you a refund within 14 days. The European Consumer Centre (ECC) Ireland has a letter template which may be helpful. What if I buy from outside the EU? When you buy online, you have additional protections under EU law if things go wrong. These rights do not apply if you buy from a trader based outside the EU. It is important to check whether the website you are purchasing from is based in the EU. The name of a website, or having prices displayed in Euro, is not proof of the location of a business. For example, a website address ending with '.ie' does not mean that the business is based in Ireland. It is also not proof that the goods will be delivered from within the EU. You should check the terms and conditions, privacy policy, 'about us' or 'contact us' information on the seller's website. This information should indicate where the business is located, and if taxes and duties are included in the price. Alternatively, contact the business directly so that you know in advance the full cost of your purchase. If you are buying from a business outside of the EU, be sure to read the T&Cs on their website for details of any import taxes or additional charges that you may have to pay - for example, VAT or customs charges - on delivery. This can apply to purchases from UK businesses as well. If you buy a product from a seller based outside the EU, you have to pay VAT on all items, regardless of value. You have to pay customs duty for products over €150. You may also have to pay VAT and excise duty for certain types of products such as alcohol and tobacco. Customs and Vat will be collected either at source from the website, or you will receive a notification from the courier and will have to pay this before delivery can happen. If you need further information about any of the issues raised here or have other questions, you can drop-in to your local Citizens Information Service in Tralee, Killarney or Caherciveen – opening hours are listed on our website www.citizensinformation.ie

FINAL COUNTDOWN Resurgent Mayo and reigning champs Kerry in scrap for top two NFL DIVISION 1

_________________________________________________________________________

Kerry v Mayo Sunday 4pm Austin Stack Park Kerry can move into the top two and edge closer to a spot in the Division 1 final by beating Mayo in Tralee tomorrow (Saturday), but they certainly won’t have it all their own way against an in-form team who have won four out of five matches to date. The Connacht side appear to have been energised by the appointment of former star forward Andy Moran as manager. Victories over Galway, Dublin, Monaghan and Armagh have left them in second place with just two rounds to play, one point behind leaders Donegal and one point ahead of Kerry in third. Mayo’s record against Kerry in the league

is decent. They’ve beat the Kingdom twice in the last three years with both of those triumphs coming on their home soil. Their last win Tralee was in 2019, though they did, of course, do a number on Jack O’Connor’s men in the championship in Killarney in 2023. They have been boosted by the spectacular form of AFL-bound youngster Kobe McDonald, who is the son of the great Ciarán McDonald, the star of many Mayo teams in the 1990s and 2000s. Kobe is joining St Kilda in Australia later this year. Kerry’s star man David Clifford was used sparingly in the last outing against Monaghan in the Fitzgerald Stadium – the Fossa man came on with around 15 minutes to go and proceeded to score 1-3 – but with a potential league final at Croke Park coming into view, he is unlikely to be held in reserve in Tralee tomorrow. If the reigning league and All-Ireland

champions prevail and follow it up with another win against relegation candidates Armagh next weekend, they will be Croker bound on March 29, possibly for a repeat of last year’s All-Ireland final against Donegal. Jim McGuinness’ charges will be on the road for their final two league fixtures but they won’t have too far to travel, at least not relatively speaking. They’re

in Dr Hyde Park this coming Sunday to face Roscommon at 1.30pm, and winless Monaghan will be their opponents in Round 7. Elsewhere this weekend, Dublin host Armagh at Croke Park (Saturday 7pm) and Monaghan welcome Galway to Clones (Sunday 3.45pm). Kerry v Mayo will be shown live on RTÉ. The other three Division 1 fixtures will be on TG4.

Hurlers right on track after 27-point win The Kerry hurlers took an important step towards the NHL Division 2 final by hammering Mayo by 27 points in Austin Stack Park last Sunday. Three early goals by Oisín Maunsell, Michael Slattery and Gavin Dooley set the Kingdom on their way and the match was well over as a contest by half-time, when the hosts led by 24. (Colin Walsh bagged their fourth goal just before the break.) Dooley bagged his second goal shortly after the interval and Maunsell later raised another green flag, bringing his overall tally for the day to 2-6. Tom Doyle of Dr Crokes chipped in with 0-2.

The result leaves Kerry in joint second with Westmeath on seven points, three points behind leaders Laois who have already secured promotion to Division 1B and a spot in the final. The final round of fixtures will be played on Saturday, March 21 with Kerry travelling to Meath and Westmeath away to Mayo. Kerry and Westmeath drew in Round 2 so if they both win, they will be separated by points difference. The Kingdom hold all the aces in this department. There huge win against Mayo has bumped them up to +64, with Westmeath miles behind on +6. Meath can slip into the top two if they beat Kerry, but only if Westmeath also lose to Mayo.

St Paul’s win again to round off regular season | By Enda Walshe In their final game of the 2025/26 regular season, Utility Trust St Paul’s defeated Brunell by 11 points to secure a home quarter-final – and a possible home semi-final – in the Super League playoffs. It must be remembered that this is only James Fleming's side’s second season in the top flight so claiming a top two spot on the back of a 14-4 record is to be applauded. They will now welcome Flomax Liffey Celtics to the Killarney Sports and Leisure Centre on the weekend of March 21/22. If they emerge from that test unscathed, they will have home advantage again, and be just one step away from another trip to the National Basketball Arena in Tallaght. This latest win was built around some superb offence at times, with Lorraine Scanlon, Lovisa Hevinder, Maisie

Burnham and Tara Cousins combining for 65 points. But they also defended with great intensity and won the battle under the boards, pulling down 51 rebounds to Brunell’s 30. That gave them a great platform to perform and they led by as much as 19 at one stage in the second half (30-49). Brunell are a proud side, however, and they did whittle down the lead to seven in the closing stages, but St Paul’s were not to be denied, eventually running out 62-73 winners. Meanwhile, following their defeat to the Drogheda Wolves last weekend, the St Paul’s Lakers head to Maree on Saturday evening knowing that a win will give them a home playoff quarter-final against the Carrick Cruisers. Defeat will mean the sat nav will be set for Ballymakenny College and another joust against the Wolves.

Big weekend of sport ahead…

13.03.2026

Eamonn Fitzgerald previews Ireland v Scotland and Kerry v Mayo

The attraction that is Cheltenham was the main sports story this week, and as we go into the weekend, action switches to Kerry FC's fixture versus Wexford, with Colin Healy’s team in need of a win. They have lost two games and drawn the other two after four rounds of the new LOI season. Two big games are on tomorrow (Saturday): Ireland play Scotland at the Aviva Stadium in the final round of the Six Nations. Kick-off is at 2.10pm. Then Kerry v Mayo in Tralee is the top game in the National Football League, with a 4pm start. Will the real Ireland team answer Ireland’s Call? The Triple Crown is at stake, and while home venue will be a big help, Ireland have flattered to deceive. They were magnificent at Twickenham but then struggled to hold off Wales in their recent home game. What is their true form. What is their true worth? The bookies make Ireland, the home team, 10-point favourites, which seems far too generous. Over the years, relations between the teams have been frosty. Scotland voted against Ireland’s bid for the 2023 World Cup and accepted French largesse to swing the vote their way. Also, back during the Troubles, they refused to travel to Dublin to play Ireland, while England, under Jeff Pullin, had no hesitation in turning up. These slights have been allowed to fester and will guarantee a tense atmosphere on the field tomorrow. The odds are against either team winning the championship, as France should

knock over a poor English side in Paris. However, both teams in Dublin are playing for the Triple Crown. In this commercial age, money matters. Winners of the Six Nations Championship will earn £6.5 million. Runners up drop to £3.5 million, and third place gets £2.5 million. Scotland, guided by Russell, have the best attacking backline in Europe and Ireland's defence coach Easterby's plans will be sorely tested. It will be a long trek home for the losers, but the £2.5 million will be a sweetener. While Jack Crowley has played well once he got in ahead of Prendergast, his place-kicking is not reliable, and that may be Ireland’s Achilles Heel. It promises to be a riveting contest, whetting the appetite for that Kerry v Mayo encounter…

MAYO CURSE

I ndeireadh na dála, tá Sam sa mhála. (When all is said and done, Sam is in the bag.) That brilliant one-liner between Kerry winning captain Dara Ó Cinnéide and fellow Gaeltacht man and former All-Ireland winner Séamus Mac Gearailt at the 2004 homecoming, after Kerry had defeated luckless Mayo 1-20 to 2-9, summed up the importance for all Kerry people of the Sam Maguire returning to its Kingdom home. It was also a wonderful example of onomatopoeia where the sound conveys the meaning as Gaeilge. Unfortunately, that is lost in translation to English. Sport and life in general are like that. Rarely is there much of the certainty that Dara and Séamus experienced. How many times

Over the years, relations between these teams have been frosty.

has a fisherman stood on the bank of the river and thought he had landed the salmon, only to have it slip away back into the water? How many times have Mayo been there, one hand on the cup, but never winning, attributed to the curse of Mayo for three-quarters of a century? Mayo have always done well in the league and will travel with confidence to Tralee tomorrow. Andy Moran has them playing well under the new rules, and tomorrow’s winners will most likely meet Donegal in the league final. I was one of those who was critical in a constructive way of Jack O’Connor’s

tactics, not the man himself, who has delivered so much for Kerry. I was a Doubting Thomas until that unbelievable turnaround versus Armagh when Paudie Clifford entered the fray at half-time and Micheál Burns followed soon after, and Kerry took control. At that stage, I realised Kerry should win the All-Ireland in July. Roll on to autumn, and Jack had plenty of time in that beautiful spot overlooking St Finan’s Bay, savouring that winning formula that eclipsed Jimmy, who never got the chance to open his bag of tricks. Mo léir cráite, Jack sold him a dummy to win

65

13.03.2026 Sam in 2025, but the Kerry boss has not rested on his laurels. No doubt his mind was moving forward to Sam 2026 and D-Day in July. In the unlikely event of a draw, August 8 will be the replay date for the All-Ireland. Jack knew that he needed some fresh faces. After winning in 2025, I predicted that Kerry would not win the All-Ireland in 2026 unless they were able to get, possibly, three new players to make the starting 15. Fringe players who did well for their clubs were invited into Kerry training to have a closer look in November and December. Several have seen good game time in the league, and the pressure is on some of the regulars to regain their places. Kerry had a whole new half-back line for the Monaghan game, and Tiger (Morley) has worked so hard to show that he is not yet past his sell-by date. Competition is the spice of life. In many ways, Kerry’s hand was forced by injury, which robbed them of key players such as Gavin White, Seán O’Shea, Paudie Clifford, and others being rested, including top ace David Clifford. On average, only six of the starting 15 from 2025 have been available and fit to play in the league so far. Who would have ever thought that Kerry would win an All-Ireland with two rookies, Seán O’Brien and Mark O’Shea at

midfield? Piseógery or roguery? I don’t know if Jack is a great believer in pigeógs but his record is unique, winning the National League on every occasion that he masterminded the return of Sam. I am very much looking forward to tomorrow’s game in Tralee. I expect Kerry to field a reasonably strong starting 15, as will Andy Moran with Mayo. These two teams have had some wonderful games over the years, but unfortunately, for Mayo, they lost most of them, especially in Croke Park, or that famous day in Limerick when David Moran lifted Kerry out of the impending defeat. You can expect a full house in Tralee tomorrow. There will be special attention on Kobe McDonald, the son of Ciarán, the former Mayo player of the past. Kobe, the bright young star, is being touted as the new Gooch type of player. Comparisons are odious, including this one. Kobe’s father was a different kind of player in many ways, but spectacular. As for the new Gooch, Donie Sheahan said there was only one Gooch, a once-off special corner forward. Public opinion is putting undue pressure on Kobe, who is only 18 years of age and studying for his Leaving Cert in three months, but he has already lit up the league as Mayo desperately want to win silver with him on board before he heads to Australia along with his parents. Mayo will be hoping to get the best out of him before he departs. To date, Kerry had a flukey one-point win in the Park over Roscommon, lost as expected to Donegal in Ballyshannon, had to beat team-building Dublin, and were pulled back by Galway after leading by 12 points (that draw was more like a home loss in Tralee). Bottom of the table Monaghan were never going to ease past Kerry in Killarney. March 28 is the date for the National League final. That makes tomorrow’s game in Tralee very attractive indeed.

FLYING FORM: Sarah Leahy of Killarney Valley AC now holds the Irish records for both the 50m indoor and 100m indoor categories. Photo: Sam Barnes/Sportsfile.

New national record for sprinter Leahy Sarah Leahy of Killarney Valley AC set a new national record for the indoor 100m at an Open Track meeting in the Lee Valley Stadium in London. Leahy ran a very impressive 11.72 seconds to make history, marking another fantastic achievement for the Killarney woman who in January broke the record for the indoor 50m, which had stood for more than 20 years. Holding two national records is a special feat for any athlete and the fastest Kerry woman of all time will be hoping to make even more progress as she and her fellow track athletes prepare to swap over to the outdoor season. Her focus now shifts to both the 100m and the 4x100m relay. Readers will recall that Leahy was a member of the Irish team that also set a new national record in that discipline in 2025.

Fr Paddy played the game of his life | By Eamonn Fitzgerald He was so full of life and enthusiasm that belied his age, the kind of person you wished to meet every day and that you thought he would go on forever. He had a great way with people, a skilled but also a skilful communicator wherever people gathered in sporting circles or in his priestly life. He knew the message of Christ and showed why and how it is relevant to the lives of people in his local Killarney or faraway Alabama, a different culture, in the deep south of the USA, but the message was clear and meaningful. His sermons were never sermonising, always meaningful. An outstanding GAA player, he has the unusual record of winning Leinster Senior A Colleges medals with Knockbeg College in his student days. Paddy Doc and his brother Séamus seemed destined

to wear the Kerry geansaí. The Lord ordained otherwise. On his retirement back home in Killarney, he joined other retirees voluntarily assisting in parish duties. His commitment to his club, Dr Crokes, sparkled, especially in organising Fr Paddy’s 31 Card games, plámásing 70 people every Wednesday night for two hours of friendly competition and craic. It wasn’t confined just to club members. All welcomed his winning formula of ‘bring a fiver and a friend’. And the winning pair are? Oops, 3 on 10 games. Spread it around: the Good Lord said, sharing is caring. It gave him great joy to sponsor the Mothers & Others team’s colourful tops for their trip to the USA. His time was up: no need for the hooter. He had played the game of his life and made such a difference to the lives of people, mine included. He will be missed. I will miss him. Slán abhaile, Fr Paddy; beidh fáilte mór romhat thuas ar Neamh.

RIP: The late Fr Paddy O'Donoghue.

SPORT NOTES

Killarney Athletic FAI JUNIOR CUP: Mountshannon Celtic 1 - 2 Killarney Athletic A.F.C Josh Bowler x 1 Brían O’Shea x 1. A good win away on the road for our Senior A Team today. Well done and thanks to Mountshannon for a good, tough game. Well done to players & management. BOYS U16 CUP/SHIELD: Camp A 3 - 4 Killarney Athletic B Martin Villa x1 Rob Murphy x 2 Malacy Audley x 1. Our young Blues made the journey to Camp and came out the right side of a 7-goal cup tie played in tough conditions and a terrible pitch. In truth Athletic dominated the tie and will wonder how they failed to put a resilient Camp side away earlier having taken the lead 3 times before eventually Mal Audley scored the winner 5 minutes from time. BOYS U14 PREMIER: Killarney Athletic A 2 - 1 Castleisland A Sean Quill x 1 Miron Svyripa x 1. The lads had a very tough match this morning travelling to Castleisland to face a very strong Castleisland team. The boys controlled the first half with fabulous technical play and strong midfield performance to control the vast majority of the first half. They went up 1-0 from a beautiful corner kick from Sean Quill. Athletic kept the pressure up and Myron Svyripa finished slotted home 2 minutes later to take the lead to 2-0 which was well deserved. Castleisland struck back from their very dangerous striker with a well taken goal to make it 2-1 at half. The lads fought hard together in the second half; they were tight and disciplined and negated Castleisland from scoring a tying goal in the second half. Very strong midfield performance from Rory Moynihan, Ronan Browne and Lucus Uchytil all day. It was the first victory ever for the boys over Castleisland since they started playing for Athletic. So a good day out for the lads against a fabulous Castleisland team. Man of the match was Rory Moynihan with a dominant display in centre midfield who showed immense leadership qualities leading the lads to this hard-fought victory. Thanks to Castleisland team and management for a very sporting game.

Mastergeeha U13 BRID DEVANE PERPETUAL GIRLS CUP: Mastergeeha 7 Tralee Dynamos 1. BRID DEVANE PERPETUAL CUP: First Round. Mastergeeha 7 Tralee Dynamos 1. Gracie Maher (5), Sophie Moynihan, Melissa O’Leary. Yesterday we faced Tralee Dynamos in the first round of the Brid Devane Perpetual Cup. Mastergeeha produced a very strong performance in the first half, with Gracie Maher once again stealing the show by scoring an incredible five goals. Sophie Moynihan added another to the tally, leaving the score 6–0 at half time after a dominant opening 30 minutes. Tralee Dynamos came out a completely different team in the second half and created a number of great chances. Sophie Moynihan made three excellent saves to deny Dynamos. Their goal came from a superb free kick from outside the box that flew high into the top corner. Melissa O'Leary scored our only goal of the second half, leaving the final score Mastergeeha 7 – 1 Tralee Dynamos. Well done to all our girls today who were in top form and put in an outstanding performance. Thanks to Tralee Dynamos for a very sporting game and

we wish them the best of luck for the rest of the season. Also, many thanks to Muhammad for officiating the game. U15 MARY LYNE PERPETUAL GIRLS CUP: Camp 3 Mastergeeha 0 w/o. U12 BOYS JOHN MURPHY CUP: Mastergeeha FC 0- 1 Killarney Celtic. MOTM: Thomas Corkery. Mastergeeha U12s boys played in the Kerry Schoolboys John Murphy U12's Boys Cup on Saturday morning against Killarney Celtic U12s. Mastergeeha very unlucky to miss a couple of chances in the first half from Thomas O'Sullivan and Dara Burchill. A tough physical first half from both teams 0-0 at halftime. Our defence of Sean Breen, Josh O'Sullivan, Nathan Cronin and Aidan McGuire were outstanding. Ronan O'Leary very well in goal also. Mastergeeha very unlucky again in the second half with some close chances. Our midfield of Dara O'Keeffe, Mathew Cahill, Ronan O’Neill, Thomas Corkery and Dara Burchill really worked hard today. Killarney Celtic getting a goal in the 46th minute. Thomas O'Sullivan huge work upfront. Mastergeeha having a strong dominating second half but unlucky not to get one back to level. A great overall team performance by Mastergeeha this morning, some great football on display by both teams. Best wishes to Killarney Celtic in the next round.

Killarney Legion GAA LOTTO: 1, 6, 22, 27. Bonus 8. Match 3s Eric Whelan, Mike McCarthy, Chris Scannell. AWARDS NIGHT: The annual Killarney Legion Awards Night will take place at The Killarney Avenue Hotel on tonight Friday, March 13, beginning at 7:30pm. The awards night is a highlight in the club’s calendar and provides an opportunity to recognise and celebrate the achievements of both young and senior members throughout the past year. Following is a list of this year’s awards winners. Senior Men’s Player of the Year – Ryan O’Grady. Senior Ladies Zena Shine. Junior Men Callum O’Donoghue. Young Ladies Laura Healy. Young Player Men Josh Bowler. Minor Boys Luke Courtney. Minor Girls Emily Brosnan. MINOR COUNTY SEMI FINAL: Minor club championship Division 1 semi-final. Legion 0-16 Laune Rangers 1-12 AET. Our minor A team played Laune Rangers in Dereen today in a fiercely contested county semi-final. Laune Rangers started the 1st quarter strong which saw them lead 0-4 to 0-1. The lads grew into the game and with the wind behind us we started to gain control and lead 0-5 to 0-4 with a few minutes to go before halftime. Quick thinking from Laune Rangers let them in for a goal. Again the lads worked a free which led to a 2 pointer which let the score 0-7 to 1-4 for half-time. The second half was very tight and there was only a point in it all through the 2nd half. After an hour it was 0-11 to 1-08. Extra time was similar with

both teams traded scores and periods of possession. We took the lead with time almost up and secured possession from the kick out to hold out for a super win. As coaches we’re delighted with all the boys today. This was a huge effort from the whole panel, and everybody contributed. They never gave up and they needed to against a very determined Laune Rangers team. Thanks to Laune Rangers for a great game and to Gary Kissane and his umpires for reffing. Next up is the final v Listry. Date is TBC. MOTHERS AND OTHERS: Our Mothers and Others group are starting back again on Thursday 12th March 8-9pm.

Spa GAA SPA ACADEMY BACK IN ACTION: Spa GAA Academy made a fantastic return last weekend with great numbers of young players back on the pitch and plenty of new faces joining in. Boys and girls aged 3 to 12 years enjoyed a lively morning of football, skills and games, with huge energy from both the players and the club’s dedicated coaches and volunteers. A special thank you to our Killarney Club 7s Committee, who generously provided a new football for every child in attendance – a wonderful gesture that allows our young players to keep practising and enjoying the game at home. The Academy continues every Saturday from 10am to 11am, and new players are always welcome. SPA MINOR GIRLS TEAM: History was made on Monday night as Spa fielded a Girls Minor team for the very first time. The occasion highlighted the success and importance of the club’s Academy in recent years and marked a significant milestone for women in sport within the wider community. The Spa team made sure it was a night to remember, defeating Duagh 5-8 to 1-2. Next up for Spa is a trip to Laune Rangers B's on Thursday 12th March. U14 GIRLS: Spa GAA’s Health & Wellbeing Committee recently organised a Movember Ahead of the Game workshop for the club’s U14 girls, with guest facilitators Conor Bohane and Julia White leading the session. The well-attended evening brought together players, parents and coaches to focus on mental fitness, wellbeing and the importance of open conversations in sport. Both speakers shared insights from their own sporting journeys and encouraged the girls to value resilience, teamwork and communication both on and off the pitch. LOTTO JACKPOT WINNERS: Cheques were recently presented to our joint Lotto winners from last month. Huge congratulations to Tadhg O'Sullivan and Timmy McGuillycuddy, who shared the fantastic €8,700 jackpot. MINOR CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP: Fossa were away to Finuge in the Shield Semi-final on Saturday afternoon, despite being depleted with a raft of injuries they put in a very spirited performance. Finuge had the aid of a strong breeze in the first half and made it count with three goals in the opening thirty minutes. Fossa came out in the second half and threw everything they had at this game, young Ben O’Sullivan and Harry O’Connor got the first two scores of the half. A brace from Shay McCormick, Eoin Bennett and Harry O’Connor got Fossa back into the game, Conor O’Mahony attacked down the wings and Fossa created a few goal scoring chances. Shay McCormick did hit the back of

the net in the 25th minute, which was quickly followed by a Luke Rennie point but, ultimately, the three first half goals were the difference as it gave Finuge breathing space; it finished Finuge 3-12, Fossa 1-09. It was a credit to the players, many of whom were U-16, that they never gave up and fought to the bitter end, but Finuge just had the edge on the day. MINOR LADIES COUNTY LEAGUE: Our Arcon Construction sponsored Fossa Minor Ladies made the trip to Gallarus to play Corca Dhuibhne in Round 1 of the 9/11 aside U18 County League. In atrocious conditions, Fossa won the toss and elected to play with the gale of wind. As ever, wind this strong is not always a help but the Fossa attack notched up 0-8 and our solid hard-working defence held the home team to 0-1. Against the worsening elements in the 2nd half, Fossa defended bravely as a team making it hard for the home team to score. A couple of wind assisted goals saw the game still up from grabs into the last five minutes but despite drawing level the home side were held at bay, Fossa struck the last blow to win by the minimum margin 1-09 to 3-02. Next week in Round 3 the girls are away to Beale on Sunday.

Killarney Rugby SENIORS: Fethard & District 7 – 46 Killarney RFC Our Senior Men’s J1 side continued their sensational run in the Bank of Ireland Munster Junior Cup with a dominant display away to Fethard & District. Despite the travel, the lads started with incredible intensity, crossing the line multiple times to secure a comprehensive 46–7 victory. The scoreline reflects clinical backline performance and a dominant set-piece. We now march on to the next stage of the competition with massive momentum. Tries from Matt McAuliffe, Finn Kennelly, Harry Kelly, Mikey Moriarty, Craig McKenzie Vass, and a hat-trick from Donnacha Grealy, with conversions from Harry Kelly (2) and Ciaran O’Brien. The next round of the Junior Cup will be at home in Aghadoe on Sunday, 22nd March v Ballincollig. U18.5 GIRLS: Clinical in Kilballyowen Bruff RFC 5 – 36 Killarney RFC Our U18.5 Girls put in perhaps their best performance of the season on Saturday evening. Playing under the lights in Bruff, the girls showed incredible structure and pace, running in several high-quality tries to finish 36–5 winners. A massive statement win for this squad in the Cup! U16 GIRLS: Mallow RFC 14 – 14 Killarney RFC The U16 Girls were involved in a nail-biter on Saturday. In a game where neither side refused to blink, a 14–14 draw was a fair reflection of two very evenly matched teams. The Killarney defence was heroic in the closing minutes to ensure they came home with a hardearned share of the spoils. U16 BOYS: Tough Day in Waterford. Our U16 Boys made the long trip to Kilbarry on Sunday. While the scoreline favoured the hosts, it doesn't quite tell the story of the grit shown by our lads, who battled until the very last whistle against a very physical Waterford side. MINIS BLITZ: Saturday morning saw a massive exodus from Aghadoe as our U8, U10, and U12 teams travelled to Killorglin RFC for a West Munster Blitz. It was a fantastic morning of rugby with our young players showing off the skills they've been honing all season. The sportsmanship and standard of play across all age grades were a credit to the coaches and parents. A huge thank you to Killorglin RFC for the warm welcome and the post-

match refreshments! Note: Our Fawns (U6) had a well-deserved weekend off, but will be back in action this coming Saturday

Muckross Rowing Club WOMEN IN SPORT WEEK: Last week was Women in Sport Week with Sport Ireland declaring ‘Same Energy’ as the theme for the 2026 edition of the annual initiative. The week culminated on International Women’s Day on Sunday 8th March. On the day, Muckross RC was delighted to hold a special morning of celebration at the club’s boathouse with the women of the club coming together for a Women’s Row as well as a Breakfast at the Boathouse. It was wonderful to see such great representation on the morning from our junior rowers to coaches, committee members, parents and supporters. Special thanks to club coach Aine Sweeney, who was the driving force behind Sunday’s celebration, to all involved with the breakfast and supplies, to our Chairwoman Sharon Cooper and to photographer Valerie O’Sullivan who captured the occasion. MUCKROSS HOR: Following the cancellation of our annual Muckross Head Of the River in December due to the weather conditions, the event has a rescheduled fixture of next Saturday, March 21st at the National Rowing Centre in Farran, Cork. On the approach to regatta season, the event is also getting a temporary update to the time trial format with a reduced 1950m course and Fixed Head timings. It is hoped the adjusted format will suit crews gearing up for the regatta season and looking ahead to the national championship regatta in July which will feature time trials as part of qualification.

Fossa Rowing Club TABLE QUIZ: The Golden Nugget was absolutely hopping with excitement for our annual table quiz last Friday night. It was lovely to see such a huge turnout with the room full of rowers, their families, and supporters of all ages. It was a tight competition, and the questions were thoroughly enjoyed. We are looking forward to our next one already! Special thanks to Caroline and Mark at the Nugget for having us, and to Angela Daly and Ciara O'Donoghue for writing our questions. Also, our quizmaster Steven Blennerhasset, popping jokes the whole way along and giving shout-outs to the funny quiz team names, funny answers and talented doodlers. A massive thank you also to all of our organisers, correctors, raffle prize donors and raffle ticket sellers. We couldn't have done this without ye. CONDOLENCES: Fossa Rowing Club would like to offer our sincerest condolences to the family of the late Pat Doherty, who passed away last week. Pat was a wonderful supporter of the rowing club, documenting the building of the boathouse in photographs and taking the photos for the commemorative Christ-

mas card. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam. St Patrick's DAY PARADE: Excitement is building ahead of this year’s Killarney St Patrick's Day festival, and we are delighted to be taking part again this year.
