NEWS

PAGESIX A stark warning has been issued to motorists across the county following the release of harrowing new figures at this week’s Killarney Municipal District meeting. The data reveals that the whole county facing a deepening road safety crisis, after a string of early-year tragedies. County-wide statistics show that road traffic collisions have surged to 309 last year, marking a significant 33.7 percent increase compared to the 231 incidents recorded during the same period in 2024. Eight of them were fatal, one more than in 2025. Even more alarming is the situation within the Killarney Municipal District itself, which has already recorded two road deaths in just the first 16 days of 2026. This rate already exceeds the local averages for both 2024 and 2025. The latest fatal incident occurred on Saturday, January 10, on the N22 Killarney-Tralee road near Dromadeesirt in the area known locally as Brennan’s Glen . Emergency services were alerted to a two-car collision at approximately 6.40pm. where a male driver in his 40s was tragically pronounced deceased at the scene. This followed another single-vehicle tragedy on January 3 at Knockdooragh, Headford, where a man in his 30s lost his life after his car struck a tree late at night. These local tragedies follow a concerning national trend.

Road safety crisis as accidents skyrocket by 33 percent 'No Confidence' motion to be tabled as RSA faces mounting criticism

Provisional figures from the Road Safety Authority show that 185 people died on Irish roads in 2025, an eight percent rise from the previous year. In Kerry, eight people lost their lives on the roads last year, leaving the county with the sixth-highest death rate in Ireland. Safety concerns were further highlighted on Wednesday, January 7, when a two-vehicle collision at the Ardaneanig junction near the Torc Hotel forced the

closure of the road between Lissivigeen and Rathmore. While this specific incident was non-fatal, it shows the high frequency of serious accidents currently occurring in the district. Gardaí continue to appeal for witnesses to the recent fatal collisions. Anyone with dash-cam footage or information regarding the N22 incident or the Headford collision is asked to contact Killarney Garda Station on 064 6671160.

The deepening road safety crisis is set to be discussed at next week’s meeting of Kerry County Council in Tralee, with a “no confidence” motion being tabled against the Road Safety Authority (RSA). Independent Cllr Jackie Healy-Rae has confirmed he will ask the local authority to write to the Minister for Transport expressing a total lack of confidence in the RSA in its current format. The motion comes as local representatives express growing frustration over the agency’s effectiveness during a period of rising fatalities. The motion will be debated by the full council on Monday, January 19. If passed, it would represent a significant formal rebuke of the national body from one of the counties most affected by the recent surge in road traffic collisions.

Sarah Leahy breaks 21-year-old Irish 50m record Killarney Valley Athletic Club sprinter Sarah Leahy has made history by setting a new Irish Women’s Indoor 50m record. Competing at the Meeting Indoor Locarnese in Switzerland on Wednesday evening, Leahy clocked a blistering time of 6.41 seconds to take the top spot. The performance eclipses the previous national record of 6.44 seconds, which had been held by Ailish McSweeney since 2005. Leahy, a member of the national women’s 4x100m relay team that famously set a new record at the London Diamond League last year, has started her 2026 indoor campaign in exceptional form. Known for her explosive power out of the blocks, the Killarney athlete is now using the international circuit to prepare for the National Indoor Championships. These are scheduled to take place in sev-

en weeks at the National Indoor Arena in Abbotstown, where Leahy aims to defend the 60m title she has won for the past two years. It is a busy period for Killarney Valley AC, as fellow club member Maria Murnane travels to Boston next week to compete in the 800m. Murnane is hoping to secure a scholarship in the United States following a highly successful 2025 season for the club, which saw its members secure 46 national and 96 Munster medals. Local runners are also preparing for the return of the ‘Streets of Killarney’ 5-mile road race, which will take place on Good Friday, April 3. The fast, flat course through Killarney House and the National Park serves as a major fundraiser for the Killarney Valley AC Arena. Entries are already open, with a strong field expected from across the country.

The founders of the Killarney Coffee Cup Project and the environmental group VOICE have issued a warning that government inaction is undermining local efforts to reduce waste. Despite Killarney leading the way as Ireland’s first coffee cup-free town, the group says the project is now on "precarious footing" because a promised national levy on disposable cups has failed to materialise. The 'latte levy' was included in the Circular Economy Act 2022, but a start date has yet to be confirmed. Advocates argue that without this charge at the point

16.01.2026

Government latte levy delay is fuelling litter crisis of sale, there is no financial incentive for customers to switch to reusables, leaving local independent businesses to carry the burden alone. The call for action follows the latest IBAL (Irish Business Against Litter) report, which found that disposable coffee cups remain a major litter problem, appearing in one-fifth of all surveyed sites across Ireland. In contrast, the report noted that plastic bottles and cans have become 60% less common since the Deposit Return Scheme was introduced last year, prov-

ing that state-led financial measures are effective. “We need Government to act, so that we can level the playing field. Without a levy, at the point of sale, customers are not incentivised to choose reusable alternatives, businesses aren't motivated to offer reusable alternatives, and large coffee chains continue with their business models that depend on disposables.” said the founders of the Killarney Coffee Cup Project. “The loss of political will is deeply worrying." Ireland currently uses over 200 million

single-use cups every year. VOICE and local organisers point to the success of the plastic bag levy as a model, noting that it changed public behaviour almost overnight. They argue that funds from a cup levy could be ringfenced to pay for national infrastructure, such as specialized street bins and cleaning hubs for reusable cups. Tad Kirakowski, CEO of VOICE, urged the government to honour its commitment, stating that continued delays send the wrong signal and lock the country into unnecessary waste.

Heartbeat Killarney issues New technology pilot projects aimed at controlling deer on N72 important reminder Heartbeat Killarney has issued an important reminder urging men to prioritise their health and attend regular heart checks. On average, the human heart beats 100,000 times a day, pumping approximately 2,000 gallons of blood through a vast network of around 60,000 miles of blood vessels. Billy O’Sullivan of Heartbeat Killarney said men of all ages often

avoid routine health check-ups, but stressed that 2026 should be “the year of no excuses”. He encouraged everyone to start the new year by putting their health first. Heartbeat is organising a special heart health night on Tuesday, January 27 at the Parish Centre Park Road from 7.30 - 9.30pm. Attendees can avail of a free blood pressure and pulse check on the night.

Two separate pilot projects utilising new technologies for deer control and driver alerts are currently being developed for a busy stretch of the N72.

The initiatives will focus on the area from the Port Road Junction, extending past the Liebherr Container Crane factory to Laccabane Village. The details emerged at Wednesday’s Killarney Municipal District meeting following a query from Cllr Brendan Cronin. Cllr Cronin asked for an update on long-standing commitments regarding the resurfacing, widening, and fencing of the N72, noting that previous promises from Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) had not been met. In its official reply, the Council confirmed that consultants are now developing two distinct pilot projects for the

site. One initiative is receiving direct support from TII, while the other is part of a broader pilot study. Elected members are expected to receive a full progress briefing on these projects in the first quarter of 2026. The issue of road safety and wandering deer will be escalated at Monday’s full meeting of Kerry County Council in Tralee. Cllr Cronin has signalled his intention to request that senior representatives from the National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) attend a council meeting to clarify what confinement and fencing works are being undertaken. Cllr Cronin is calling for a formal strategy similar to those used by Irish Rail, involving engagement with fencing professionals to protect road users from the increasing number of accidents caused by deer in the county.

Future of Áras Phádraig remains uncertain as Council is told to restart funding process Plans for the redevelopment of the Áras Phádraig site on Lewis Road have hit a significant administrative roadblock following the official rejection of the previous proposal. At this Wednesday’s meeting of the Killarney Municipal District, Cllr Marie Moloney sought an update on the project’s status after elected members famously voted down the original plan last July. The original scheme, which had been four years in the making and cost nearly €900,000 in preparatory fees, included a theatre, a public plaza, and a six-storey HSE Primary Care Centre. While this multi-million euro project had been 'approved in principle' by the government, the decision by Killarney’s seven councillors to reject the HSE element meant the existing business case was no longer valid. Council officials confirmed this week that because the project no longer has planning permission, the Department of Housing has withdrawn its approval for the previous funding model.

To secure future investment, the Council has now been instructed to submit a completely new preliminary business case. This new application must align with the original conditions of the Urban Regeneration and Development Fund (URDF). The URDF is a national competitive fund designed to rejuvenate town centres through sustainable development and high-quality civic spaces. However, because it is a competitive process, funding is tied to specific plans that demonstrate a high socio-economic return. The Council’s reply to Cllr Moloney clarified that the new business case will focus only on a theatre and public plaza. Crucially, it was revealed that requests from councillors to include a new library or an expanded Arts Centre were not part of the original URDF application. Because the funding process is so rigid, adding

these new elements now could jeopardize the chances of receiving any government money at all, as they were not included in the 'approved in principle' bid from years ago. This leaves the town in a difficult position. While councillors and the public overwhelmingly opposed the height and scale of the six-storey HSE building, that 'anchor' was the primary driver of the

project’s financial viability under URDF rules. Management warned that without the Primary Care Centre, the project may struggle to meet the strict requirements of the national fund. For now, the Council will proceed with a plan for a scaled-back theatre and plaza, while the prospects for the long-promised library and civic hub remain outside the scope of current government funding.

New ‘Skills for Life’ programme Record-breaking Historical Calendar available at Advertiser office to launch at Killarney Library A new nationwide initiative called Skills for Life is coming to Killarney Library on January 22. This programme is delivered through Ireland’s public library network and aims to provide people with practical learning opportunities to help with various aspects of everyday life. The programme was recently launched by Jerry Buttimer, Minister of State with responsibility for Community Development and Charities, at the LexIcon in Dún Laoghaire. It is now being made available across all 30 local authority library services in the country. The initiative focuses on six primary

themes designed to help citizens feel more confident in the modern world. These include basic digital skills for those looking to improve their online confidence and financial literacy for better money management. It also covers media literacy, business and employment skills, health awareness, and sustainable lifestyles including environmental awareness. Killarney residents looking to manage their finances, understand media more clearly, or live more sustainably are encouraged to visit the local library to access these resources. Further information on the programme can also be found on the official libraries Ireland website.

The final remaining copies of Damien Switzer’s record-breaking 2026 Killarney Historical Calendar have gone on sale at the reception desk of the Killarney Advertiser.

Local historian Switzer, often referred to as the 'Jimmy McGee of Killarney' for his vast knowledge of the town's heritage, has produced a calendar that spans 40 A3 pages. This is double the size of previous editions and contains nearly 1,000 photographs, leading to suggestions that the publication may hold a world record. The calendar serves as a visual catalogue of Killarney’s evolution, featuring images that date from the 1880s through to the 1980s. Rather than focusing solely on famous landmarks, Switzer has prioritised the faces of the people who shaped the town over the last century. The collection includes a diverse range of subjects, from vintage sports teams and school groups to old-fashioned shopfronts and candid

everyday moments. With only a limited number of copies left from this historic print run, interested residents are encouraged to visit the Killarney Advertiser office soon to secure their copy of this unique piece of local heritage.

The arrests were made on Saturday, January 10, as part of Operation Tara, the national anti-drugs strategy aimed at dismantling trafficking networks. The operation began at approximately 2.50pm on Saturday when Gardaí from the Kerry Divisional Drugs Unit stopped and searched a vehicle in Killarney. During the search, officers recovered €5,000 worth of cannabis, a knife, and several electronic devices. Two men,

aged in their 30s and 40s, and a woman in her 30s were arrested at the scene. Follow-up searches at multiple locations across Killarney led to the discovery of a further €160,000 worth of cannabis and €1,300 worth of LSD. Gardaí also seized a suspected firearm, weighing scales, and packaging equipment. While the woman was later released without charge, both men were brought before Judge David Waters on Monday. The seized drugs have been sent to Forensic Science Ireland for analysis. Gardaí confirmed that the investigation is ongoing as part of their efforts to disrupt local sale and supply networks in the Kerry Division.

Caoimhe Murray set for lead role in Musical Society’s show

Killarney Musical Society is preparing to stage All Shook Up this February to mark its 40th anniversary. Caoimhe takes on the role of Lorraine, a fun-loving and spirited character who falls in love with the mayor’s son, Dean Hyde. The production is a significant family milestone for Caoimhe, who has been a member of the society for nine years. She is the daughter of Amanda Murray and the granddaughter of Phil Spillane, both of whom are also long-standing members and part of this year’s cast. This production marks Caoimhe’s fifth show with the society. Her previous experience includes playing Brigitta Von Trapp in The Sound of Music in 2018, as well as lead roles such as Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz and Cosette in Les Miserables with her stage school. She also recently played Sophie in her school production of Mamma Mia. Caoimhe has built an extensive background in performing arts through years of training. She has been a student of Fiona Crowley’s Stage School since the age of five and has attended the West End House School of Arts for acting. Her musical training includes singing lessons with Sorcha O’Connor and piano with Catriona Cahillane, alongside completing the AIMS Youth Summer School Programme last year. All Shook Up will run at the Gleneagle Arena on February 10, 11, and 12. The show features the music of Elvis Presley and tickets are currently available through the Gleneagle Box Office or via Ticketmaster.

Calls for recognition of women at Mission Memorial Killarney Municipal District has been asked to address a significant gender imbalance at the town’s Mission Memorial in the Fern Garden. Speaking at Wednesday’s municipal meeting, Cllr John O’Donoghue highlighted that while the monument correctly honours those who served abroad, it is currently heavily weighted towards men, leaving the massive contribution of missionary women almost entirely unacknowledged. Ireland’s missionary history is deeply rooted, with an estimated 30,000 men and women joining missionary orders between 1920 and 1970. Cllr O’Donoghue pointed out that women, particularly those in various orders of nuns, likely exceeded their male counterparts in number. These women often worked in dangerous locations, serving as the sole voice for the marginalised, including those suffering from disease, poverty, and displacement. The Councillor argued that even a cursory glance at the existing monument shows it does not reflect this reality. He asked the Council to examine how best to rectify this imbalance and acknowledge the work of these women in a fitting manner. He noted that the message of empathy

16.01.2026

The Kerry nun who braved the streets of wartime Rome

and acceptance carried by these missionaries to all corners of the globe is more important to highlight today than ever before. In response, the Killarney MD Office stated they would welcome engagement and recommendations from community

groups and stakeholders regarding specific individuals deserving of recognition. The Council indicated a willingness to review how to better commemorate these women at the Mission Garden to ensure their selfless acts are properly recorded for future generations.

One of the most likely candidates for commemoration is Sister Noreen Dennehy, a Missionary Franciscan Sister originally from Killorglin. History often focuses on the famous ‘Rome Escape Line’ led by Monsignor Hugh O’Flaherty (who already has a dedicated Mission Road statute). Sister Noreen played a vital and covert role in the network’s success during World War II. Operating behind the scenes, she served as a crucial bridge between the Monsignor and the highest echelons of Roman society. Sister Noreen frequently undertook dangerous missions through the cobbled streets of occupied Rome to liaise with the local elite, including a key 'princess' who provided the essential funding and logistical support needed to keep the escape route operational.

Presentation Monastery rise to new level as Handball champions The Presentation Monastery National School were crowned Kerry Olympic Handball Champions following a thrilling 6-5 win in Extra Time over defending champions Gaelscoil Mhic Easmainn Tralee. The finals, which were hosted in the Killarney Health and Leisure Centre, saw 16 National Schools compete across 4 different age groups with both boys' and girls' sections. The event, which is facilitated by (KRSP) Kerry Recreation and Sports Partnership, has become a huge success in recent years with numbers participating growing each year. The Presentation Monastery National School took the Juvenile (5th and 6th

class) title having defeated Firies NS and Cullina NS to reach the final following an opening game loss to Gaelscoil Mhic Easmainn Tralee. In an exciting final the sides were tied 4-4 at the end of regulation time but two crucial goals in Extra Time proved enough to send the Killarney School to the Munster championships, which will take place on March 4 at Neptune Stadium in Cork. Following the win School Principal Mary Brosnan paid tribute to the team of 10 players who have trained hard to hone their skills. “The boys have trained really hard over the last number of weeks and it is a massive credit to them to what they have achieved in winning a county final."

The 2026 South Kerry Jobs Fair is set to return to Killarney with a wide range of employment opportunities across multiple industries. Organised by South Kerry Development Partnership CLG (SKDP), the recruitment event will take place at The Great Southern Hotel on Thursday, February 12. Employers from sectors including construction, hospitality, IT, finance, retail, manufacturing, and healthcare will be in attendance to meet with potential new recruits.

16.01.2026

South Kerry Jobs Fair returns to Great Southern Hotel in February Beyond the chance to meet employers, jobseekers can participate in free workshops designed to improve their employment prospects. These sessions will cover essential skills such as drafting effective cover letters, CV preparation, and techniques for undergoing job interviews. There will also be information provided regarding employer relations supports for those seeking new roles.

Joanne Griffin, Enterprise Officer for SKDP, noted that the fair has grown significantly over the years and is now established as a key date for recruitment in the region. She highlighted that the informal setting allows both parties to ask questions and determine if a position is the right fit. SKDP CEO Noel Spillane added that the event is particularly vital for local businesses, including those in the

tourism sector, to ensure they have sufficient staffing for the upcoming season. This year’s event is supported by the Great Southern Hotel, Intreo, Local Link Kerry, South Kerry Skillnet, and Morgan McKinley. To ensure the fair is accessible to as many people as possible, buses will be provided to transport attendees from across the South Kerry region to the hotel in Killarney.

Torc to Dinis cycleway delayed following planning appeal Progress on the long-awaited walkway and cycleway between Torc and Dinis has been halted following an appeal to An Coimisiún Pleanála. At Wednesday’s meeting of the Killarney Municipal District, Cllr John O’Donoghue asked for an update on the project, which aims to remove pedestrians and cyclists from a dangerous stretch of the N71. The National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) originally applied for permission to build a raised platform walkway and cycleway connecting the Dinis and Torc (Cardiac Hill) car parks. This design was chosen specifically to protect the natural habitat beneath the structure, including the rare Kerry Slug, which is found along the route. Kerry County Council granted planning permission for the project in January 2025, a move that was widely welcomed by the local tourism industry and safety advocates. However, the project has since been de-

layed by a third-party appeal lodged by environmental group Wild Ireland Defence CLG. The appeal challenges the Council’s assessment of how the construction material, including concrete and structural steel, might affect the Special Area of Conservation. As a result of this appeal, An Coimisiún Pleanála has requested further information from the NPWS. Council officials confirmed this week that there is currently no set date for a final decision. The delay is a blow to the project, which has been discussed for over a decade as a vital safety measure. Currently, anyone completing the popular Muckross Lake loop is forced onto an 800-metre section of the busy Kenmare road, where they must share a narrow, winding road with tour buses and heavy traffic. Cllr O’Donoghue described the ongoing hold-up as frustrating, noting that the completed path would be transformative for both locals and visitors.

Torc Waterfall is a popular walkway for outdoor enthusiasts.

Hugh O’Flaherty Centenary Exhibition extended at library The Hugh O’Flaherty Centenary Exhibition at Killarney Library has been extended for an additional two weeks.

CSG and ORM accountants establish local Killarney merger

Originally scheduled to conclude this Saturday (January 17), the display will now remain open to the public until Saturday, January 31. The exhibition marks the 100th anniversary of the Monsignor’s ordination and covers four distinct periods of his life: his education in Ireland and early travels, his journey to the priesthood, the operations of the Rome Escape Line during World War II, and his post-war retirement and legacy. Visitors can view several personal artefacts from his time in Rome, some of

which are being publicly exhibited for the first time. These items include one of his golf clubs, his personal Breviary and Roman Missal, and his Rome guidebook used for assisting pilgrims. Organizers are particularly encouraging local schools and students to visit before the new closing date at the end of the month. The exhibition highlights the humanitarian work of the 'Vatican Pimpernel' and his colleagues, who provided refuge to Allied POWs, Anti-Fascist Resistance members, and Jewish people regardless of nationality or creed, following his motto: 'God Has No Country.' The exhibition is available to view during normal library opening hours at the Rock Road branch.

CSG Accountants and Advisors has announced a strategic merger with Killarney-based ORM Accountants. The firm will operate under the CSG name, strengthening its presence across Kerry with offices now located in both Tralee and Killarney. The move increases the total staff number to 70 and expands the client base to 2,250 businesses across the Munster region. Established in 2017, ORM Accountants was led by John Mannix and Michael Brouder. Following the merger, John Mannix joins CSG as a Director. Chris Murray, Managing Partner at CSG, said that while the firm is expanding, the day-to-day relationships for Killarney clients will remain unchanged. He noted that the merger gives local businesses better access to specialists in tax, audit,

and advisory services to support growth and investment. John Mannix added that joining CSG is a natural progression that allows the firm to help clients navigate a changing business environment, including new technologies and AI. The merged practice will continue to serve a wide range of sectors including hospitality, tourism, and agri-business. This expansion forms part of CSG’s strategy to provide national-level expertise with a local, relationship-driven service.

Calls for better coordination between bus and flight times at Kerry Airport Killarney councillor John O’Donoghue is set to bring a motion before Kerry County Council next week calling for improved public transport links at Kerry Airport. The proposal requests that the local authority write to the National Transport Authority (NTA) to ensure bus services are better coordinated with scheduled flight arrivals and departures. The motion is scheduled for the next Or-

dinary Meeting of Kerry County Council, which will take place on Monday. Councillor O’Donoghue’s proposal aims to address gaps in the current transport schedule, where bus times do not always align with the peak travel periods of the airport. By seeking formal coordination with the NTA, the motion intends to make it easier for passengers to use public transport for their onward journeys throughout the county after landing in Farranfore.

Credit Union introduces new mortgage product for local buyers Killarney Credit Union has officially entered the local mortgage market with the launch of a new standard mortgage product aimed at both first-time buyers and those looking to switch lenders. The new offering features a competitive variable rate of 3.85% (3.92% APRC). To provide borrowers with extra security, the interest rate for this product is capped at 4.4% for the first three years. This feature is designed to give homeowners certainty regarding their repayments while still allowing them to benefit from a variable rate structure. Mark Murphy, CEO of Killarney Credit Union, stated that the product was developed in response to members seeking more choice in the mortgage market. He highlighted that, unlike larger commercial banks, all lending decisions for these mortgages will be made locally by the

credit union team in Killarney. He also emphasized that the application process has been designed to be as straightforward as possible to reduce the stress typically associated with buying a home or switching providers. The launch follows a decision by the Central Bank to increase lending limits for credit unions, a move welcomed by Minister of State Robert Troy. Speaking at a national launch event, the Minister noted that the introduction of such products supports increased competition in the market and recognizes the unique, community-based role that credit unions play in Irish life.

The exhibition, which runs from March 10 to March 31, explores the foundational years of the political party within the county between 1926 and 1933. The exhibition details how the party established itself in a county where Civil War divisions were particularly deep-seated. It covers the transition of local figures from revolutionary activities to parliamentary politics and the intense election battles of the late 1920s. Visitors will be able to view documents and archives that illustrate how the party built its organisation across South Kerry in its first decade.

As part of the event, local historian and author Dr. Owen O’Shea will give a public lecture at the library on Thursday, March 26, at 7.00pm His talk will focus on the foundation of the party and the bullets to ballots transition in Kerry politics. The exhibition is free to attend and will be open during the library's scheduled operating hours throughout the month of March. The project is the result of extensive research funded by the Department of Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media. The grant was awarded under the Commemorations Bursary Scheme for 2025-2026 and managed by the Royal Irish Academy. This scheme supports local research that helps the public better understand the political and social evolution of Ireland following the Civil War.

A WEEKLY ROUND-UP OF NEWS • VIEWS FROM KERRY AND AROUND THE WORLD

INSPIRED BY DANNY CASEY

Motorists advised to be vigilant of NCT scam Irish motorists are being urged to be careful when booking a test through the National Car Testing Service website following reports of a fraudulent copycat website. The Irish Times reported this week that criminals cloned the website and asked motorists to pay upfront to secure an appointment. The fraudulent website mirrors the NCT home page, but when

customers pay the money, no booking is made. The NCT became aware of the fake website last weekend, however efforts to shut it down have proved unsuccessful. According to the Irish Times, the NCT has been contacted by several people who were conned into handing over money. They said that one motorist ended up paying €600 and never received anything in return. The NCT is a compulsory vehicle inspection programme in

Ireland, and the aim of the programme is to improve road safety reduce harmful vehicle emissions. In 2025, it was found that 133,000 vehicles that presented for a NCT last year were classified as ‘fail dangerous’, according to the official NCT figures. Motorists are reminded that the only official website for booking an NCT test is www.ncts.ie and are advised to remain vigilant when making online payments.

An Post increase stamp price From February 3, stamps will now cost €1.85, which is an increase of 20c. An Post said that falling letter volumes and rising overheads for fixed cost networks are resulting in stamp increases globally. A new €3.50 rate for Europe, which includes Britain, will increase by 85c, and new Rest of World rate of €3.95 to stem significant losses due to a 38% fall in international letters in 3 years. The increase covers cost inflation and secures the national letters service, including staffing, infrastructure and sustainable fleet. An Post says that stamp prices are all below equivalent average European tariffs. Nursing and Care Homes will continue to receive post for free. This price increase also ensures An Post’s commitment to Sustainability. In late 2025, An Post achieved the milestone of a 50% reduction in carbon emissions ahead of target and recommitted to achieving net zero across the business by 2030.

VFI slams Diageo's latest pint price increase The Vintners’ Federation of Ireland (VFI) has strongly criticised Diageo’s decision to increase the price of its draught products by 7 percent, warning that the move that will pile further pressure onto pubs already struggling to survive. The price increase is due to take effect from February 2. Pat Crotty, CEO of the VFI, states: “Publicans are being hit from all sides, but drink costs are the biggest burden they face. This latest price increase from Diageo will put even more pressure on pubs that are already operating on extremely tight margins. Many will be left with no option but to pass this on to customers, which helps nobody.” The

VFI warned that repeated supplier price increases are contributing to rural pub closures, where pubs are already under severe pressure from declining footfall and rising operating costs. “This isn’t just about the price of a pint,” says the VFI CEO, “It’s about the long-term viability of pubs across the country. Community pubs are being pushed to the brink and continued increases in drink prices only accelerate that trend.” The VFI is once again calling on both suppliers and Government to recognise the scale of the challenge facing the sector. In particular, the Federation is urging Government to introduce targeted supports to help pubs remain viable.

Irish fuel prices among highest in EU after taxes New analysis by DoneDeal Cars has found that Ireland is among the most expensive countries in the European Union for fuel once taxes and mandatory levies are applied. According to figures from the European Commission’s Weekly Oil Bulletin, Ireland ranks as the fifth most expensive Member State for petrol in the EU for petrol and 3rd most expensive for diesel when compared across Member States. However, when prices are examined before taxes, Ireland ranked 13th for petrol, and 8th for diesel. This places it close to the middle of the EU range. Paddy Comyn, Head of Automotive Content and Communications for DoneDeal Cars, said that Ireland’s taxation on fuel continues to affect motorists. In Ireland, motorists pay a fixed excise duty per litre, a separate carbon tax that rises annually, costs associated with the Renewable Transport Fuel Obligation which require biofuels

to be blended into petrol and diesel, the NORA levy to fund national oil reserves, and the Better Energy levy linked to energy efficiency schemes. VAT at 23 per cent is then applied on top of all these charges, meaning motorists pay a tax on previous taxes and levies. These measures mean that more than half of the final pump price of petrol and diesel in Ireland is accounted for by taxation and mandatory charges, rather than the underlying cost of fuel itself. While many EU countries apply fuel taxes, Ireland’s approach stands out for the number of separate levies applied and for the compounding effect of VAT on top of those charges. The fuel price analysis is based on European Commission data for the week of 5 January 5, 2026, published in the Weekly Oil Bulletin, which provides harmonised fuel price comparisons across all EU Member States. Prices are reported in euros per 1,000 litres and have been converted to a per-litre basis for comparison.

Macra demands urgent action for young farmers Macra President Josephine O’Neill is calling for urgent action on young farmer supports following IFA AGM exchange with Minister for Agriculture Martin Heydon. Josephine O’Neill warned that that waiting until CAP 2028 is simply too late given the current level of uncertainty facing the sector. Speaking at the IFA AGM in the Irish Farm Centre, O’Neill questioned the Minister for Agriculture on what concrete measures his Department plans to introduce in the short term to support young farmers and ensure farming remains a viable and attractive career. Raising concerns around the ongoing uncertainty surrounding Mercosur and the stark statistics on generational renewal, O’Neill asked the Minister how

he planned to help young farms. In response, the Minister stated that “taxation is our single greatest support to generational renewal.” While acknowledging the role taxation measures can play, O’Neill said that taxation alone is not enough to address the scale of the challenge facing generational renewal in Irish farming. She said: “We need far more work to normalise conversations around succession at farm level and to actively encourage and support families to plan for the future,” She concluded by stressing that without immediate action, Ireland risks losing an entire generation of potential farmers. “If we are serious about food security, rural vitality and the future of farming, then generational renewal must move from rhetoric to action. Waiting until the next CAP risks leaving young farmers behind.”

The position is based in Galway and applicants must have excellent Irish, both spoken and written. Many well-known presenters began their careers on TG4’s continuity presenters’ panel, including Aoife Ní Thuairisg, Síle Seoige and Dáithí Ó Sé among many others. The role involves presenting weather information, delivering programme-related content

and on-air continuity on TG4, and undertaking scriptwriting, voiceover, and social media work. A training course will be provided for candidates who are shortlisted. This course will run from 16–20 February in partnership with Gréasán na Meán and will provide a taste of various aspects of presentation. From this shortlist, two candidates will be selected to undertake several weeks’ work experience at TG4. If you have a strong command of Irish and a natural flair for presenting, this is a great opportunity. More details are available on their website, and the application deadline is tomorrow, January 17.

ALDI’s hourly wage rose by 25% in five years ALDI Ireland has announced a 2% increase for all colleagues paid hourly rates, coming into effect on February 1. ALDI first committed to paying the living wage to all colleagues in 2018. This latest increase equates to a 25% increase across the last five years. This pay increase means the minimum hourly base pay rate at ALDI’s stores and warehouses will be €15.40 per hour, with additional annual increments rising to €17.75 after one, two and three years of service. The business is investing approximately €5.5 million in this pay review, including auto-enrolment contributions. ALDI has 166 stores across Ireland, and a dedicated team of more than 4,800 colleagues across its store network. It has been a market leader on pay for many years, and this latest increase will see the business meet or exceed the Living Wage, as calculated by the Living Wage Technical

Group (LWTG) for the eighth year in succession. Niall O’Connor, ALDI Ireland’s Country Managing Director said their focus is on customers and colleagues. He said: “This marks the eighth consecutive year we have met or exceeded the recommended Living Wage, which is central to our commitment to making ALDI one of the best places to work in Ireland. Importantly, while we invest in our people, our products will continue to offer the best value in the market.”

While this was the first time she won a Golden Globe, it was not the first time Jessie has been recognised for her screen work. She earned a BAFTA nomination for Wild Rose in 2020. In 2022, she was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her role in The Lost Daughter. She was nominated for a Laurence Olivier Award for her performance as Sally Bowles in the West End revival of Cabaret in 2021. The 2026 Oscar nominations are due to be announced next week, and it is widely expected that Ms Buckley will earn another Academy Award nomination. Jessie has enjoyed

a steadily rising career, having starred alongside A-list actors on both stage and screen and making a name for herself in Ireland, London and Hollywood. Her journey began in 2008 when, as a teenager, she left home to pursue an acting career abroad. Jessie grew up in Killarney and spent much of her childhood in the Arbutus Hotel, which has been run by the Buckley family since 1926. She was first in the public eye when she appeared on the BBC talent show, I’d Do Anything. Although she came second, she embarked on a wide-ranging and successful career in London and America. Jessie is the daughter of Tim Buckley and Marina Cassidy and grew up in Killarney. uckley wows Hollywood past member of Killarney Musical Society, appearing in the children’s chorus. In 2008, the same year she appeared on I’d Do Anything, she played the role of Julie Jordan in their award-winning production Carousel. She was nominated for and won Best Actress at the Association of Irish Musical Societies awards. Tributes have been pouring in for the Kerry actress on her spectacular win. President Catherine Connolly congratulated Jessie on her wonderful achievement, while also paying tribute to her co-star Paul Mescal. She said the award is a fantastic recognition of Jessie’s outstanding work, and of the continued exceptional success

of the whole Irish film industry. Fianna Fail TD Michael Cahill hailed it as an “amazing achievement” saying “anyone who followed her career on TV from the BBC talent show I’d Do Anything, when Andrew Lloyd Webber picked her out at that time, are proud of her Kerry roots and we can feel a little reflected glory from that.” Mayor of Killarney Cllr Martin Grady praised Jessie and her family on her award, saying, “She continues to excel in her craft and has done herself, her family and the people of Killarney immensely proud.” Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce also paid tribute to the actress. The business organisation said it is wonderful to have somebody so gifted and so modest and unassuming representing the town, county and country on a world stage. The team at the Killarney Advertiser extend a huge congratulations to Jessie. It is fair to say that Jessie Buckley has done the town of Killarney proud, and we are all excited to see what she does next.

Beaufort man collects 18th car from Randles Bros Beaufort resident Paddy O’Sullivan has marked 40 years of loyalty to Randles Bros by collecting his 18th vehicle from the dealership. Paddy recently met with David Randles at Randles Bros Tralee to take delivery of his latest car, a new Nissan Qashqai. The O’Sullivan family’s relationship with the garage dates back four decades to when Randles Bros operated as an Austin Morris dealer. Paddy’s first purchase was a Morris Marina, one of the top-selling models of the 1970s. As the dealership evolved, so did Paddy’s choice of vehicles. When the garage took on the Datsun franchise, he moved into a Datsun 140 J, also known as the Datsun

Violet. Following the brand's transition to Nissan in the 1980s, he became a frequent owner of the Nissan Bluebird. This was followed by a stint owning five different Nissan Primeras throughout the late 1990s and early 2000s. In recent years, he has transitioned to the Nissan Qashqai, with this latest '261' registration marking his 18th time driving a new car out of the Randles Bros showroom. David Randles thanked the Beaufort man for his continued business over the generations. “We want to thank Paddy and his family for being such a great customer to Randles Bros for so long,” he said. “Congratulations on your purchase Paddy, and safe travels.”

Rally of the Lakes Praised for Autism-friendly approach The organisers of the Rally of the Lakes have been praised by a local family for the steps taken to make the event more accessible to autistic spectators, highlighting how small changes can make a big difference at major motorsport events. As part of the wider Autism Friendly Killarney initiative, the Rally of the Lakes

introduced dedicated autism-friendly measures, allowing families to attend in a more supportive environment. One Kerry family, whose young son is autistic and has a strong interest in cars, said the event gave them an opportunity they previously would not have considered possible. Speaking as part of a new Autism Friendly Killarney video series, parent Deirdre Prendergast said her family was able to

attend a special evening at the Rally of the Lakes where autism was understood and accommodated. Her son was able to get close to the cars and enjoy the experience without sensory overload, something she described as a major step forward for their family. The Rally of the Lakes is one of several major Killarney events now providing quiet areas, sensory supports and trained staff. For families affected by autism,

this has opened the door to attending high-profile events together, rather than splitting up or staying away entirely. Killarney was recently awarded Autism Friendly Town status by AsIAm, with the Rally of the Lakes cited as an example of how motorsport events can adapt without losing their character. For families who love cars and rallying, the changes have made participation possible where it once was not.

‘Pink Night’ held in Kilcummin in aid of Comfort for Chemo ‘Pink Night’ was held in Kilcummin on January 10 in aid of Comfort for Chemo, bringing the entire community together for a very important cause.

The event, which was postponed from the previous week, had music from Rosie and Derry Healy and DJ Declan. Pink Night has been running for over 20 years, and this marks the fourth year that Comfort for Chemo has been chosen as the beneficiary. Speaking on the night, organiser Geraldine Pigott said the charity continues to resonate deeply with the community. She said: “Cancer has

touched so many families in one way or another, and Comfort for Chemo offers such practical support at a very difficult time,” The event drew a strong turnout, and the organisers expressed gratitude to the many local businesses and individuals who donated prizes. “The generosity we receive every year is incredible,” Geraldine added. “From sponsors to ticket sellers and everyone who comes through the door on the night, it really shows the strength of community spirit here.” The Best Dressed awards on the night went to Noreen O'Neill and Mike Moloney.

Artificial Intelligence’s impact on young people From adolescents and infants being exposed to limitless generative content, either by their parents to keep them quiet or by their own choice, children now scroll through mobile devices daily, regardless of the time of day.

My name is Kuba Kierzkowski, I’m 19 years old and I am a student in Kerry College in Tralee where I study Digital Media Production. For my work experience, over the course of ten weeks I am working in journalism and writing articles for the Killarney Advertiser. This week I am writing about AI.

This raises concerns about the potentially dangerous effects young people can develop from the overconsumption of short-form media. When does it happen? Have you ever had a family member or friend with one child or several? Currently, 40% of toddlers use tablets as early as the age of two. This is a considerably high percentage, showing how much of the population is drawn into the digital landscape as soon as they can form basic sentences. This can often be traced back to how parents manage childcare: to keep children occupied or quiet, or to reduce stress for themselves.

Even older individuals such as teenagers or young adults, while more in control of their actions, can easily lose themselves in short-form content. Viewers - especially children - are more inclined to watch content that immediately catches their attention. This may be due to bright or oversaturated colours, cute or visually appealing imagery, the appearance of favourite characters or influencers, or the notorious red circles and arrows in thumbnails designed to stop them scrolling and encourage clicks. One type of content that stands out is artificially generated media, also known as 'brainrot.' What is Brainrot? Brainrot is not simply a slang term for poorly made content, but a phenomenon in which the brain can be negatively affected by the overconsumption of short-form media. This is mainly caused by endless scrolling, which provides constant overstimulation. Over time, this can lead to increased irritability, emotional

distress, and sensory avoidance - effects also observed in older individuals. Brainrot can also impact cognitive functions by reducing concentration, attention span, and short-term memory. It is commonly associated with artificially generated imagery, both still and animated, often created using AI software and distributed widely online. Another popular term for brainrot content is “slop,” often paired with AI and referred to as “AI slop,” which carries the same meaning. Who is responsible? The rise of short-form media, later blended with artificial intelligence, would not have occurred without TikTok’s surge in popularity in late 2018 and early 2019. Due to TikTok’s global success, competing platforms such as YouTube and Instagram attempted to replicate its format through YouTube Shorts and Instagram Reels. Like TikTok, these platforms later became heavily affected by the rapid spread of artificially generated content.

Fair Deal Scheme: What To Know What is the Nursing Home Support Scheme? You can apply for financial support to help pay for the cost of care in a nursing home through the Nursing Homes Support Scheme, also known as the Fair Deal scheme. The Fair Deal scheme is managed by the Health Service Executive (HSE). Under Fair Deal, you pay a certain amount towards the cost of your care and the HSE pays the rest. Fair Deal covers approved private nursing homes, voluntary nursing homes and public nursing homes. Who can apply? You must be ordinarily resident in Ireland and need long-term nursing home care to apply for the scheme. You need to be approved for Fair Deal before you can get funding for a nursing home. You can apply for a Nursing Home Loan if you have assets including land or property. With a nursing home loan, you can postpone paying for your care until after your death, using your assets to secure the loan.

Published By

How does the Fair Deal scheme work? When you apply, your care needs are assessed by the HSE to confirm that long-term nursing home care is the most appropriate option for you. The HSE also assesses your financial situation to see how much you can afford to pay towards your nursing home care. The HSE then pays the balance between what you can pay for your care and what the nursing home charges for providing that care. Your assets, such as savings and property, are taken into account when assessing your financial situation. What does Fair Deal cover? The scheme covers long-term nursing home care only. The Fair Deal covers: • Accommodation and food • Nursing and personal care • Laundry service • Basic aids and appliances needed to support you with everyday living Other goods and services may be available under schemes such as the medical card or Drugs Payment Scheme. It does not cover short-term care such

as respite, convalescent or day-care or extra fees charged by the nursing home for services like hairdressing, therapies or activities What is involved in applying for Fair Deal? There are 4 steps to the Fair Deal application process: 1: Fill in the application form, which you can pick up in your local CIC or print from the intranet 2: Complete a Care Needs Assessment 3: Complete a Financial Assessment 4: Apply for a Nursing Home Loan (this step is optional) What is the financial assessment? The Financial Assessment works out how much you can pay towards your nursing home care. The HSE will pay the remaining balance of the weekly cost of your care e.g. if the total weekly cost of your care is €1,000 and your weekly contribution is €300, the HSE will pay €700. This payment by the HSE is called State support. The Financial Assessment looks at all of your income and assets. If you are part of a couple, the assessment will be based on half of your combined income and assets. The assessment will look at assets that you have transferred since applying for State support or in the 5 years before the application. For example, any land, money or property you have given to another person. How much do you pay towards your care? After assessing your income and assets, the Financial Assessment will work out how much you pay towards your care. You pay 80% of your income (less some deductions), and 7.5% of the value of your assets per year. The first €36,000 of your assets, or €72,000 for a couple, are not counted in the Financial Assessment. If you are part of a couple, you will contribute half of the amounts above, that is, 40% of your income and 3.75% of the value of your assets per year. If your assets include land or property, the 7.5% contribution based on these assets may be deferred and paid to Revenue after your death. You can

THIS WEEK’S ISSUE IS BROUGHT TO YOU BY: Advertising: Clodagh Nagle Graphic Designer: Leszek Szeligowski, Sports Journalist: Adam Moynihan, Sean Moriarty

defer paying the 7.5% contribution by applying for an optional nursing home loan. How is rental income from your home calculated? If you own your home and are renting it out to a tenant while you are in a nursing home, you can apply to keep 100% of this rental income, instead of having to pay some of it towards your nursing home care. This means you can keep all of the rental income from renting your own home. Your home is your principal private residence. If the property you are renting is not your own home, you must pay 80% of the rental income to nursing home care. What is the 3-year cap? Some assets are only included in the financial assessment for the first 3 years you are in care. This is known as the ‘3-year cap'. It means that you pay a 7.5% contribution based on the value of certain assets for up to 3 years. These assets can include your home, the proceeds of the sale of your home and your farm or business. After 3 years, you will not give any further payment based on these assets, even if you are still getting long-term nursing home care. All other assets will be taken into account for as long as you are in care. If you are part of a couple, you will pay a 3.75% contribution based on your home for a maximum of 3 years. Your total contribution over the 3 years is capped at 11.25% of the property's value. If both partners are in care, the total contribution is capped at 22.5%. How does the 3-year cap apply to farms and business owners? Family-owned farms and businesses can be included in the ‘3-year cap' if they meet some conditions. You must apply to the HSE to appoint your family successor who will commit to running the farm or business for at least 6 years. Your farm or business must have been actively run by you, your partner or your proposed family successor for at least 3 of the last 5 years A charge in favour of the HSE will be placed on the chargeable property of

a business or farm Your successor must be aged 18 or older and must be your partner, your relative or your partner’s relative. Speak with your local Citizens Information Centre for more information on this matter. What financial safeguards are in place? As part of the Financial Assessment, the following safeguards are in place: • You will not pay more than the actual cost of care • You keep a personal allowance of 20% of your income or 20% of the maximum rate of the State Pension (Non-Contributory), whichever is more • If you have a spouse or partner remaining at home, they will be left with 50% of the couple’s income or the maximum rate of the State Pension (Non-Contributory), whichever is more What is the Nursing Home Loan? The Nursing Home Loan is an optional element of the Fair Deal scheme. It is an option if the person in nursing home care has assets including land and property. If you are approved for the Nursing Home Loan, the contribution based on your assets (land or property) can be postponed. This means the HSE will pay the money to the nursing home for you, and it will be collected after your death or after the sale of all or part of your asset. In certain circumstances the payment may be deferred for a longer period, for example, if a spouse or partner or your former carer is still living in your home. If you need further information about any of the issues raised here or have other questions, you can drop-in to your local Citizens Information Service in Tralee, Killarney or Caherciveen – opening hours are listed on our website www.citizensinformation.ie You can also contact us by telephone or email: Killarney Tel: 0818 07 7820 Email: Killarney@citinfo.ie

Kerry’s season is starting to warm up

(In spite of the terrible weather) MCGRATH CUP FINAL

_____________________________________________________________________

Kerry v Cork Saturday 1.30pm Fitzgerald Stadium Kerry will be looking to claim their first McGrath Cup title since 2022 when they host fierce rivals Cork in the 2026 decider in Killarney tomorrow (Saturday). A totally one-sided victory over Waterford at Dr Crokes Park last Sunday (1-27 to 0-1) sent Kerry through to the final, while Cork advanced from the other group on points difference despite losing at home to Limerick by 3-11 to 0-15. Munster’s pre-season warm-up competition, which was put on ice in 2025, was last won by Cork in 2024 when they defeated the Kingdom on penalties in Páirc Uí Rinn. The Rebels also went all the way in 2023 when they defeated Limerick in the final (after putting five goals past Kerry in the group stage). Kerry prevailed in ‘22 in Jack O’Connor’s first season back in charge of the team, running out comfortable 2-17 to 0-11 winners in the Park. O’Connor fielded a strong team that day with David Clifford, Paudie Clifford, Séanie O’Shea, Gavin White, Paul Geaney, Tom O’Sullivan and Brian Ó Beaglaoich all seeing game time. Few (if any) of those star players are likely to feature this weekend – Geaney, O’Sullivan and the rest of the Dingle contingent certainly won’t as they will be lining out against St Brigid’s of Ro-

scommon in the All-Ireland Club final on Sunday. Ó Beaglaoich will also be rested for a period following An Ghaeltacht’s successful run in the All-Ireland Intermediate Club Championship, a run which culminated in a six-point win over Glenullin (Derry) in Croke Park on Sunday. Kerry held a training session in the Fitzgerald Stadium before the McGrath Cup match against Waterford with several established players believed to have taken part. How many will be deemed ready for the Cork clash remains to be seen. Some are likely to be slowly reintegrated to the starting 15 during the league, which gets underway on January 25, but O’Connor will be determined to beat Cork. With that in mind, one would expect him to go as strong as possible – within reason. The experienced Jason Foley and Tadhg Morley were selected for both McGrath Cup group games so they are likely to anchor the defence again, with Cillian Trant, Liam Smith and Darragh Lyne also probable starters having impressed against Clare and Waterford. John Cleary fielded a youthful side in that defeat to Limerick with several players making their first appearances at senior level. Among them was Conor Daly from Clonakilty who scored 0-5 (3f). The likes of Chris Óg Jones, Ruairí Deane and Colm O’Callaghan could be in line to play tomorrow having lined out in Cork’s previous fixture, an easy win over Tipperary. For those who are unable to attend, the final will be shown on TG4 YouTube.

Brilliant Brosnan points the way in pretty pointless mismatch

| By Adam Moynihan You felt sorry for Waterford, coming all the way to Killarney for such a hammering. It’s rare enough that the two teams meet and both parties will be happy to avoid each other for as long as possible. Division 1 teams and Division 4 teams should be kept apart really. The whole exercise was largely pointless. With that being said, the players could only play what was put in front of them and the match still had to be won. They went about their business professionally and set about putting the game to bed in the first half when they had the gale force wind at their backs. Tony Brosnan was unlucky with the timing of his injury last summer and he will no doubt be desperate to make his mark with Kerry this July, assuming Kerry get that far. He was clearly intent on laying down a marker the last day as he kicked

0-10 in the first 17 minutes on his home turf, effectively winning the game on his own before Waterford knew what hit them. He finished up with 1-15 including five two-pointers, a massive tally, albeit against a weak opponent. The goal came early in the second half when Darragh Lyne, who put in another strong performance at centre forward, did brilliantly to force a turnover. He quickly fed Tony and the two found themselves clear through on goal. Tony could have carried the ball in himself but he immediately returned the ball to Darragh, hoping (and probably knowing!) that Darragh would carry it in and square it back to him. That’s corner forward cuteness, and you can’t teach it! It was a well worked goal in fairness and no better man than Tony to apply the finish in those situations. Liam Smith from Glenbeigh/Glencar was excellent at midfield, particularly in the first half when Kerry dominated Waterford’s restarts. He battled for possession

admirably and fetched a number of high balls, which wasn’t easy given the horrendous conditions. The emergence of Mark O’Shea and Seán O’Brien as viable starters, along with Joe O’Connor’s sensational form and Diarmuid O’Connor’s undoubted pedigree, means that midfield is no longer a major area of concern for Kerry. But if Smith carries on the way he’s going, he might be next in line. Middle third operator Cillian Trant of St Senan’s continues to impress. He scored 0-4 against the Déise, including an outrageous two-pointer from way out the field. Granted he had been fouled and the referee was playing advantage so it was a shot to nothing, and it was wind-assisted, but it was a monster of a kick. It was nice to see so many new players seeing game time. Many of them might not feature again for Kerry at senior level this year as Jack O’Connor will be cutting his panel down over the coming week or so, but the experience will stand to them.

Cork tomorrow is a funny one. You obviously never want to lose to them, especially at home, so you’d like to see a strong enough Kerry team being named. The league is starting next week as well so some of the main guys might need minutes to prepare for the competitive action. At the same time, there’s no need to rush anyone back in for a McGrath Cup match, and some of the newer players who have showed up well in recent weeks deserve another crack. I can see Jack feeding a couple more senior stars back in just to add some experience and physicality to the line-up, one or two players who, like Jason Foley and Tadhg Morley, might fall into the “durable” category. I’m not sure where they are in their conditioning after the off-season but guys like Seánie O’Shea, Joe O’Connor, Graham O’Sullivan, Micheál Burns and Seán O’Brien (who played against Clare) spring to mind.

Tony finished up with 1-15 including five two-pointers, a massive tally.

NEW CODE: Cronin and the Crows reached the AFLW semi-finals in 2025.

Kayleigh keen on Kerry return down the line In the second part of her interview with Eamonn Fitzgerald, Adelaide Crows player Kayleigh Cronin talks about her future Are you happy you made the decision to give AFL a go? Yeah, definitely. 100%. To be honest with you it was on the cards for a couple of years and I kind of shook it off. As I said, my group at home always had full belief that we would win (the All-Ireland) and I was so happy that I didn't go to Australia any sooner. Look, it's a decision that I suppose I had to make. I definitely don't regret it. What are your plans now? Do you go back in for a new season? Yes. It's our seasonal blackout period until February, so that means the club can organise nothing for us. Now we have our own individual plans from the trainers and physios, but group sessions are not allowed. I’ll head back in February, and we’ll start for the new season. It’ll be full-on back into the swing of things. Touch wood, I will be hoping to stay injury free in AFL. I have been lucky so far, just a few minor niggles. You might have them even at home, but they would not prevent you from playing.

Does the internet and social media make it easier for you to be away from home? Yeah. 100%. I suppose just in terms of contacting people at home, and I can follow the games if the time difference suits. The Australian clock is 10 hours ahead of Ireland so a typical afternoon game in Ireland could be 1am in Adelaide. Your contract is for two seasons? Yes, currently. And then? I can look forward. To returning to Ireland? By keeping myself fit I can rejoin Crokes and have some more to offer to Kerry if that opportunity emerges. I'm sure your family, the Crokes and Kerry will be delighted to see you back as well. Thanks for an honest interview. Best of luck in the new season and may your dreams for your future materialise back home after stint with the Crows. Thanks Eamonn.

16.01.2026 | By Eamonn Fitzgerald Plenty of cup games last weekend in several codes but the best goal that I saw was not on all those televised soccer and rugby games cross-channel, but here in Killarney in Woodlawn. I was fortunate to stroll to the banks of the Flesk to watch Killarney Athletic defeat BT Harps 4-0 with Seán Quill hitting four goals for the Blues. The win sent the Killarney side into the last 32 of the FAI U14 National Trophy. The beautiful setting with the majestic snow-topped MacGillicuddy Reeks provided a perfect backdrop for the youthful exuberance and high levels of skills by both sides. No hoofing the ball first time of the Charlton era but delightful feints, trapping the ball and other basic skills of soccer. They were a joy to behold but one star shone brightest of all. Seán Quill’s four goals were all well taken and certainly no flukes. He set Athletic going with his first before half-time. Good, but better was to come, especially

57

Blues advance in U14 National Trophy goal two when he hit a screamer with that trusted ciotóg (left foot) from 30 yards into the roof of the Tipp side’s net at the optimum point just inside the post and under the bar. Liam Brady would have been proud of that shot. I hope someone videoed it. Later, he followed with a long-distance free kick for goal number three, and he made it 4-0 before the finish. Such composure, such skill, and he also got back to help his defence when needed. Quill has scored 22 goals to date with the U14s and he also scores regularly with the older age group. He was the MVP in a well-coached team that has now advanced to the last 32 in Ireland. The whole team played well.

I was also impressed by the silken skills of another player who was smaller in stature. When I enquired later to get his name, I was not surprised. The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree. Dúchas; you can’t beat it. His grandfather was small in stature but huge in heart and consistency, a winner of All-Ireland’s with Kerry in 1969 and 1970, and also Texaco Footballer of the Year in 1970. Caelan Prendergast sparkled. Diarmuid O’Carroll was once a bright young star learning the basic skills with Athletic and he later signed as a professional player with Glasgow Celtic in 2003. Two years later, Brendan Moloney signed for Nottingham Forest. Their underage coaches can be proud of their

All-Ireland Club treble on the cards Congratulations to Ballymacelligott (Junior) and An Ghaeltacht (Intermediate) who won their respective All-Ireland Club football final at Croke Park on Sunday last. That is what I expected. Now can Dingle make it a remarkable

third All-Ireland for Kerry sides when they meet St Brigid’s of Roscommon in the senior final at GAA HQ on Sunday? Form suggests they can, especially with Mark O’Connor released from Geelong to line out at midfield. Paul Geaney will probably start but I wonder will he be as influential as he might be as a proven

impact sub? Best of luck to the town team who need to win to match the bragging rights of their local arch-rivals An Ghaeltacht. CÉILÚRADH: Ruaidhrí and Rónán Ó Beaglaoich of An Ghaeltacht. Photo: Piaras Ó Mídheach/Sportsfile.

achievements. Killarney Athletic had 29 male and female teams in action last weekend plus another nine learning the skills in the Academy. It was a wonderful spectacle, much more so than some of those drab, pedestrian, soulless games across the Irish Sea. With apologies to the Kingfishr trio, here goes: All I have to remember is the pride that I felt 'Round Athletic’s pitch where the boys never knelt They'd go rarin' and tearin' and fightin' for love For the club they call Athletic, and the Lord up above The Blues a la, la-la-la-la, la-la-la-la-la

Impressive St Paul’s looking good in Super League | By Enda Walshe St Paul’s enjoyed a comfortable home victory over the Portlaoise Panthers in the Women’s Super League on Saturday. The result means the Killarney club hold an impressive 8-3 record and if they carry on this way they are well positioned to snatch an advantageous home playoff berth by season’s end. This win was forged early on with Tara Cousins very productive and it was also achieved without the influential Leah McMahon who had to sit out the game with a concussion. But those who lined out in the St Pauls vest wasted little time getting into their stride with the usual suspects Maisie Burnham and Lorraine Scanlon to the fore. Even though she didn't register on the scoresheet, the newly crowned Kerry ladies’ captain Síofra O’Shea was also prominent, as was Denise Dunlea who was celebrating a milestone birthday also this weekend. Lovisa Hevinder looked sharp again and, with the game in hand, it afforded Clodagh O’Sullivan and Naoise O’Connor some valuable game time.

Burnham and Scanlon were both on target inside the first minute but the imposing Christina Ojide soon had the Panthers off the mark. It didn't hamper the St Paul’s momentum as Cousins smoothly converted from beyond the arc to open a 10-2 lead early on. Ojide was effective for the visitors but she soon ran into foul trouble as Burnham and Cousins continued to torment. Jessica Fressle did hit a three for the Portlaoise side but the St Paul's machine continued to roll with Dunlea and Deirdre Geaney now on the mark. Megan Dunne and Cousins exchanged points to leave the first quarter score at 23-13 in the home side's favour. The second quarter continued in the same vein but the Panthers were struggling offensively, thanks in the main to some stout and aggressive defence from the hosts. Scanlon was also doing Scanlon things, grabbing rebounds at one end and converting sharply at the other. With Burnham also accurate and Alyssa Velles the only one offering resistance, the advantage was soon extended to 3315 midway through the quarter. Lovisa Hevinder then announced herself to the game with a three soon followed by a Cousins bucket. Shauna Dooley was now on the floor for

the Panthers and she threw in a three to give her side a bit of half-time respectability at 38-20. SECOND HALF The Panthers needed to make a quick start to the second half to get into the game and they succeeded as Fressle, Lynn Tunnah and Ojide all converted. But Cousins and Hevinder soon awoke their side from their slumber with Scanlon and Burnham following suit. Any hopes the Panthers were entertaining were soon quenched as Burnham struck from outside and the evergreen Lynn Jones made it 50-27 late in the third. Ojide added some late points but the lead was maintained at 18 (50-32). Hevinder and Burnham were quick into action in the final quarter with Ciara Bryne trying hard for the Panthers. It was 57-37 when Hevinder landed two trademark threes and with the game totally in hand it allowed coach James Fleming the opportunity to run the bench. The Panthers did likewise but all the while Burnham and Geaney added to the total on the breakaway. The highlight of the game was about to appear for young Naoise O’Connor as she collected her first Super League points. With basketball in her DNA (her aunt Bernice Dowling

starred for Tralee back in the day), she will hopefully be adding to that collection in the years ahead. Clodagh O'Sullivan, another young prospect, was also on court and she helped her side see out the game, with St Paul’s winning on a 69-44 scoreline. A trip to the Fr Mathews Arena is next in the offing with the game taking place on Saturday, January 24 at 5pm. LAKERS The Utility Trust St Paul’s Lakers made it six wins on the bounce in the Men’s National League Division 1 when they defeated the Galway Titans 72-74 in the Ballinfoyle Community Centre. The Westerners have been a tough nut for the Lakers to crack in recent years the Killarney boys came into this fixture in good form, and they ultimately brought home the spoils. Steve Kelly led the way for the Lakers with 25 points, Jack O'Sullivan and Mark Sheehan scored 14 each, Samuel Grant had 11, and Eoin Carroll added 10. The result moves the Lakers onto nine wins and they entertain the top team in the league, the Dublin Lions, on Saturday, January 24 in what is shaping up to be the game of the season so far.

UNDERAGE AWARDS NIGHT and Bingo will take place on Wednesday the 18th of February at The Killarney Oaks Hotel from 7.30pm so come along and support our young players and have a great night as well. BOYS U16 DIVISION 2: Tralee Dynamos 1 - 2 Killarney Athletic. Brendan McHugh x 1 Rob Murphy x 1. Our first game of 2026 saw us travel to Tralee and put in a super team performance in a cracking game of soccer. Athletic controlled the first half with some lovely passing moves and combination play particularly between Daniel Fennelly, Rob Murphy and Sam O’Donoghue and deservedly went in 1 nil up through a super Brenden MCHUGH strike from the edge of the box. Dynamos came at us hard as expected in the second half in a real end to end battle with Athletic's defence holding firm with the superb Borys Januzuzyk keeping the home team at bay .The blues had a couple of chances to finish the game with Martin Villa coming closest hitting the post with a strike from distance. Dynamos grabbed a goal with 5 minutes to go but the blues hit right back with Rob Murphy scoring the winner. Good performances by the back four, Sam O’Donoghue, Rob Murphy and man of the match Brendan McHugh midfield BOYS U14 NATIONAL TROPHY: Killarney Athletic A 4 - 0 BT Harps (Tipperary). Sean Quill x4. The boys had a tough game today at Woodlawn at in the National trophy against a strong team from Tipperary. The first half was back and forth with a few good chances from both teams. Sean Quill broke the draw with a very well finished strike to put Athletic up 1-0 at half with the well-deserved lead. The lads came out strong in the second half with constant pressure and controlled the game. Sean Quill beat 2 defenders and scored an amazing goal from 25 yards out from his left foot with a booming curling shot to the top corner which could have been the goal of the month on match of the day in the premiership. The great team work ethic and pressure provided Sean with two other fabulous finishes. One from a free kick from 30 yards out and another great left footed strike. All the lads played a part in the well-deserved win against a strong BT Harps team. Thanks to BT Harps for the sporting game and the referee. On to the last 32 of Ireland now. Well done boys. Man of the match Sean Quill. U14 BOYS DIVISION 1: Killarney Athletic B 1 Ballyhar A 0. Goal: Harry Randles POTM: Alex Kissane. Athletic earned a hard-fought win Saturday morning in Woodlawn. It was a tight game from

start to finish with both sides creating chances. There were strong performances all over the pitch, the centre back duo of Alex Kissane and Ruairi O’Brien particularly stood out with dominant displays and a superb game between the sticks from Ewan Marshall. Going forward, Athletic threatened consistently and were duly rewarded in the last minute of the game. Harry Randles latched on to a long ball, showed great strength and pace to carry the ball into the box, hold off the centre back and finish emphatically into the top corner to secure a well-deserved win. Thanks to Ballyhar A for a sporting match. BOYS U14 DIVISION 3: Killarney Athletic 3 - 2 Fenit B. In a thrilling game of football Athletic eventually came away with the 3 points. A superb first half saw us going in at the interval with a two nil leas courtesy of a William Sjorgen and an individual piece of brilliant by Jakub Slowakiewiz. As expected Fenit were not going to give up and after a few missed chances to extend our lead Fenit scored twice in ten minutes. With time running Jakub Slowakiewiz got to the end of corner to get the winner with a super finish. Thanks to Fenit for a great game and to the ref who officiated excellently. BOYS U12 PREMIER: St Brendan's Park A 2-0 Killarney Athletic A. A top of the table clash this morning produced a great game of soccer in Tralee. The first half was an even enough affair with The Park having the better of the chances. We were dealt a blow when our CB Daniel O’Donghue was forced off with injury, but we adapted well and went into half time at nil all. Fionn Herlihy was in great form in goal and made a number of impressive saves throughout both halves to keep the sides level. Rian O’Reilly had a very good shot saved in the second half but with 14 minutes to go it took a real moment of quality from our former Athletic academy player Igor Jasinski to make the breakthrough with and excellent goal which was worthy or winning any game. We conceded another toward the end as we pushed for an equalizer, and the Park deservedly took all three points. Best on the day for Athletic were Tiernan Kavanagh, Sean O’Brien and MOM Fionn Herlihy. Well done to both teams on a cracking game and thanks to Adrian Quirke the ref who officiated the game brilliantly. U13 GIRLS PREMIER LEAGUE: Killarney Athletic A 0–3 Killorglin. Early, this morning in Woodlawn, Killarney Athletic A welcomed Killorglin for an Under-13 Girls Premier League fixture. Killarney Athletic captain today, Erica O’Sullivan took up position in goal in place of the injured Jane Brosnan and got off to a strong start. In the early stages, she produced an excellent one-on-one save to deny Killorglin an early opener and keep her side in the game. Despite Athletics’ efforts, Killorglin broke the deadlock

in the 12th minute with a well-worked team goal, leaving little the Killarney defence could do to prevent it. Killorglin continued to apply pressure, but Athletic showed great determination at the back, with a special mention to Holly O’Connor who was immense today. On the 23rd minute, Sinead Coleman made a superb goal-line clearance, saving the ball off the line in what was one of the standout moments of the first half. At half-time, Killorglin held a 0–1 lead. They started the second half strongly and soon doubled their advantage to make it 0–2. Killarney Athletic responded with renewed energy and pressured well but just couldn't find the back of the net. Midway through the second half, Killorglin struck again to extend their lead to 0 - 3. To their credit, Athletic never gave up and pushed hard in the final 10 minutes in search of a consolation goal. Despite their best efforts, it was not to be. Thanks to Killorglin and the referee for a good game. U15 PREMIER GIRLS: Killorglin 0 Killarney Athletic 4. Lilian Slattery x 1 Ella Crowley x 1 Ellie Mae OSullivan x1 Evie Doolan x 1. Our girls dusted off the cobwebs with what only can be called a scintillating performance. A person best from our Captain Ellie Mae OSullivan who scored the 3rd. What was most enjoyable for coach and spectator that it was a brilliant panel performance with each player getting loads of time on the ball. They were calm, composed and up for the challenge that we knew Killorglin would give. The scoreline would suggest an easy victory but it was anything but. Killorglin put the girls through their paces. Both their goalkeeper and backline constantly blocking play and putting pressure on our girls. Each player played with tenacity and conviction knowing the end result had to be a victory. Thanks to Killorglin for a very sporting game and the referee for a very fair game.

Mastergeeha 12 BOYS PREMIER: Mastergeeha A 8 Camp A 0. Goals scorers for Mastergeeha FC - Olivier Stachowiak (3), Dara Burchill (2), Thomas O'Sullivan (2), Ronan O'Neill (1). Mastergeeha got off to a great start with opening game of the 2026 Kerry Schoolboys and Girls Season. A wet and windy Sunday morning in Kilbrean Park with torrential rain against Camp. Mastergeeha made a flying start in opening minutes with Thomas Corkery very unlucky not to score from a header that rattled the post with a great ball from Sean Breen. Few minutes later Dara Burchill with great cross from left and Dara O'Keeffe very unlucky not to finish. Olivier Stachowiak got our 1st goal 10th minute for Mastergeeha with a super break away ball by Dara Burchill over the top to Oliver with a clinical finish. 2 mins later Thomas Corkery with great build-up play in Midfield found Oliver with a ball over the top and Oliver finished it home for his 2nd goal. On the 16th minute Nathan Cronin was fouled and took the free from Mastergeeha own half , went for distance and launched it to Olivier to put him in a 2 v 1 with Goalkeeper and defender with Oliver finding the back of the net to set him up for his hat-trick. On the 25th minute Oliver Stacchowick took to the wings on the right side of midfield switching play

16.01.2026 SPORT NOTES with a long ball to the left putting Dara Burchill in a 3v1 and Dara taking on 2v defenders and goalkeeper to put us up 4-0 at half time. A minute into second half 31st minute Mathew Cahill, Ronan O'Neill and Thomas O’Sullivan all fantastic in the build-up with Mathew Cahills assist for Thomas O'Sullivan to put us up 5-0 on 31st minute. 36th minute Sean Breen moving out from right back played brave ball to Ronan O'Neill in midfield with Ronan powering the finish into the back of the net to put us up 6-0. 38 minutes Mathew Cahill with another great assist to Thomas O'Sullivan to put us up 7-0. Dara Burchill finished the game out for us on the 39th minute with a left legged strike to find the bottom right corner. Game closed out early at 8-0. Overall great team performance by everyone. Big thanks to Dylan O'Sullivan in goal today Solid performance by our defence of Sean Breen, Josh O'Sullivan and Nathan Cronin. Dara O'Keeffe. Ronan O'Neill, Conor McCarthy, Mathew Cahill, Dara Burchill and Thomas Corkery midfield. Our strikers outstanding today Thomas O'Sullivan and Oliver Stacchowick. Assists, work rate, recovery runs and goals. Today's Man of the Match goes to Dara Burchill. Special mention to today's referee Tom O'Sullivan for a very fair sporting game, physical game. Great communication throughout in tough weather conditions. Best wishes to Ronan O'Leary our Goalkeeper playing with Kerry U12s today. U12 BOYS DIVISION 1: Mastergeeha B 1 LB Rovers A 4. Mastergeeha B produced a very encouraging display at home despite a 4–1 defeat to LB Rovers. The team controlled large spells of the game showing excellent work rate. Several well‑constructed attacks were created, but the breakthrough goal proved elusive. The second half followed a similar pattern, with Mastergeeha continuing to play on the front foot. However, LB Rovers were more clinical with their chances, scoring at key moments. Mastergeeha responded with a well‑taken goal and continued to push forward, before being caught late on. U12 BOYS DIVISION 2: Tralee Dynamos A 5 Mastergeeha C 1. Mastergeeha U12 C Team had an evening game under lights on Dynamos new astro turf pitch on Saturday evening. Mastergeeha started slowly and Dynamos took advantage to take an early lead. Mastergeeha regrouped and started to put some good attacks together. Rory Leane was unfortunate when his well struck shot cannoned back off the cross bar. Mastergeeha worked a good equaliser following good defending by Michael O’Connor who played the ball to Ryan Dewhurst who put Rory Leane through on goal to finish well. We conceded from a harsh penalty before half time to leave the score 2 – 1 to Dynamos at the break. Dynamos had the better of proceedings in the second half and added four further

goals. A tough day for the Mastergeeha boys but to their credit they never gave up and kept fighting until the final whistle. Special thanks to Shane O’Boyle for stepping up from the Under 11's to help us out. Best on the day for Mastergeeha were Darragh O’Connell (Capt.), Ryan Dewhurst and Rory Leane. Captain: Darragh O’Connell. Goal Scorer: Rory Leane. Assist: Ryan Dewhurst. Thanks to the Referee and to Dynamos for a very sporting game. U12 BOYS DIVISION 3: MEK B 1 Mastergeeha D 2.
