Sports mad teen's fun in the flood video goes viral A flooded GAA pitch might not be the ideal training conditions but it proved the perfect formula to make a Killarney teen's video go viral! | By Michelle Crean 19-year-old Glenflesk GAA footballer Damien Switzer had the ingenious idea on Tuesday to take advantage of the flooded pitch near his home following torrential rain - with the help of his father Damien Snr who waded into the water to film the fun.

And it proved so popular after being posted on the TikTok social media platform that it's chalked up a staggering 650k views, 129k likes, over 4,200 comments and 8,300 shares.

Killarney businesses contacted by billionaire's tech company | By Sean Moriarty Tech billionaire Elon Musk’s Starlink satellite Internet service has already been in contact with home and business owners in the Killarney area offering a connection to the new service.

Starlink is SpaceX’s plan to build an interconnected Internet network with thousands of satellites, designed to deliver high-speed Internet to anywhere on the planet. The network is an ambitious endeavour, which SpaceX has said will cost about $10 billion or more to build.

Earlier this week it was reported that one of the last places in Ireland to get electricity and telephone connections - The Black Valley - could be one of the first in the world to get a satellite based broadband Internet connection - thanks to interest from the Tesla electric car

However, potential customers who want to sign up for the service can do so by paying a monthly fee of around €80 on top of an initial €400 fee for a connection kit.

“If this brings Internet to the Black Valley, we don’t care where it comes from,” Patricia Deane, the manager of the

If this really is a possibility it should be explored without delay. The Black Valley community needs this basic infrastructure now more than ever and have been waiting a long time for help in getting working broadband delivered to the area. There are people in the Black Valley that don’t even have a mobile phone signal not to mind broadband.

They are holding phones up to the window to take calls. In this day and age, with working from home and children home-schooling, broadband is a basic service.”

Kerry County Council has confirmed to the Killarney Advertiser that it is in talks with Starlink’s parent company Spacelink – the company that launched several satellites into space last summer – but remains tight-lipped on the finer details

"Dad was in the water filming, it took us about 10 to 15 minutes."

He then showed his friends for the craic and they suggested he post it online.

"They suggested I make it public and it reached 60k in the first hour and 120k in the second. It's crazy." of the situation.

Several businesses in Killarney have been contacted by the company after receiving emails inviting them to join the service.

While there were initial concerns that the email was a scam, they have turned out to be genuine.

One Killarney business man - who did not want to be named - said he got an email from Starlink inviting him to subscribe to the service, adding he has no direct links to the Black Valley.

“It came to my business email, not my personal one,” he told the Killarney Advertiser. “I don’t know where they got it but it is genuine – we checked it out.”

Starlink claim its satellite service will be available worldwide later this year. The American firm is targeting rural areas across the world – places where mobile and landline coverage is impossible.

"Important to note that cellular will always have the advantage in dense urban areas. Satellites are best for low to medium population density areas," said Starlink Elon Musk late last year.

More tellingly he Tweeted: “Starlink is really meant for those who are least served.”

Local coach firm offers free vaccination transport to over 85s | By Sean Moriarty

Moll’s Gap goes digital in new rally simulator video game The Moll’s Gap road - famous as a stage in the Rally of the Lakes and the old Circuit of Ireland Rally - has been digitally mastered into a video game and will be made available to gaming and rally fans all over the world. | By Sean Moriarty The 18km stage, which runs from the Dinis Cottage entrance to the National Park almost to Kenmare, is the most famous rally road in Ireland. The road, that climbs up past Ladies View and along the shores of Muckross Lake, the Upper Lake and Looscaunagh Lough, is both loved and revered by rally drivers from all over the world.

The digital adaption of the famous road has been made possible by Kildare-based Digital-Motorsports – the same firm that digitally mastered Mondello Park as part of the circuit’s 50th anniversary in 2018.

Company co-founder Niall Maher explained to the Killarney Advertiser how he gathered data from several sources including on-board videos of previous rallies, Ordnance Survey maps, Google Maps data, and GPS taken from rally cars and timing trackers.

“Once we did Mondello, there was only one other next step, and that was Moll’s Gap," he told the Killarney Advertiser.

“The way the world is going now, we are hoping to open it up to a whole generation that might never have been to the ‘Gap’ before."

The video game is suitable for the Assetto Corsa Competizione platform, a racing simulator that is popular with professional racing drivers who want to learn various tracks.

“Anyone who is serious into their racing simulation will know that as a gaming title,” added Maher.

In time it will be made available on the Richard Burns RBR Rally Pro platform making the simulation more accessible to gaming and rally fans all over the world.

The final product is not quite finished and while the road and undulations are as close as possible to realistic, some fine tuning by rally drivers familiar with the stage are needed and it's expected to be officially launched in mid- April.

Once that is completed the developers will add what they call street furniture and landmarks like Derrycunnihy Church.

HOW IT MIGHT LOOK: A virtual rally car on the Moll's Gap stage.

Well-known local firm O'Callaghan Coaches and Chauffeur Services will offer free transport to residents aged over 85 from Killarney and surrounding areas who need to get to their vaccination appointments.

The family run firm will pick up the passengers from their front door and bring them to the location of their vaccine appoint, then take them back to their homes.

The company has over 20 coaches and buses, the majority of which are parked up since this time last year, so drivers and management are willing and able to offer this free service, while adhering to all safety and hygiene guidelines, to elderly residents of the Killarney District.

Owner Phillip O’Callaghan explained to

the Killarney Advertiser the three main reasons for this offer.

The service will give something back to the community that has been very loyal to his firm for generations, the promotion of positive mental health for his out of work drivers, and allowing idle vehicles to be driven which helps prevent damage.

“It is win win for everyone,” Phillip told the Killarney Advertiser. “We are doing this to keep us busy when we have nothing to do, we are giving back to our community, our drivers are only delighted to help and it helps keep them busy. And we have to take the buses for a long drive every now and again to keep them charged up and stop them seizing.”

Kidney patient welcomes new vaccine priority list | By Sean Moriarty A local kidney patient has welcomed the Government’s changes to the COVID-19 vaccine allocation priority list which was updated on Tuesday - saying it's "far more comprehensive".

It now means all organ transplant recipients and people on dialysis aged 16 to 69-years-old are moved to cohort 4 consistent with their medical risk.

Kidney transplant patients affected by COVID-19 have 20 percent mortality rate according to research by The European Society for Organ Transplantation.

Barth Flynn (37), attends dialysis at University Hospital Kerry three days a week. The Fossa man suffered kidney failure as a baby and the condition grew progressively worse in adulthood.

He received his vaccine last week.

However, he was vaccinated through his job as the former Director of Nursing at Killarney Nursing Home and not because he is medically vulnerable.

Speaking with the Killarney Advertiser Last month, he raised serious concerns about the Government’s vaccine plan.

He felt kidney patients were too far down the list and if they picked up COVID-19 in the meantime it could create an untold amount of problems for

Aoife's 150km walking challenge for Pieta House | By Michelle Crean It's a big challenge but it's one a local woman wants to take on and she hopes her 150 kilometre project this March inspires others.

Winners will be driving in style in new Nissan Juke Mary O’Connor and Colin House from Woodlawn Killarney got a great surprise when they received a call from Killarney Credit Union to find out they had won a brand new Nissan Juke in the Killarney Credit Union Members' Draw.

Mary and Colin collected their fantastic new car adhering to all current health guidelines, from Mark Murphy, CEO at the Beech Road office.

"It is great to give people such a nice surprise in these current times, Mary and Colin were so excited about their win," Karena McCarthy, Marketing Officer Killarney Credit Union, said.

"We currently have just over 2,400 members in the draw which is held twice a year. Our prizes include a new car and cash ranging from €250 to €5,000 cash.

Our next draw will take place in July.”

Aoife Murray (22) from Ash Close, Ballydribeen plans to walk 150kms - or approximately 100 miles - during the month of March in aid of Pieta House Kerry.

Aoife, who says she was diagnosed with Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) a number of years ago, is doing her fundraising online and hopes her good deed will benefit others.

"It's something I wanted to do for a long time," Aoife told the Killarney Advertiser this week.

Since the age of 13 or 14 Aoife began suffering from mental health issues, self harmed and said she had suicidal thoughts at times.

She explained that as a teenager she was

placed in children's wards in Kerry and then in Cork which were totally unsuitable fas she was waiting to be diagnosed.

"I only got diagnosed two years ago. It was a relief and now I know what triggers it."

Services provided by Pieta are vital, she added.

Pieta have also helped a lot of my friends and I just want to give something back.

Now I'm doing well and I wanted to do something to make a difference."

Now she's hoping people will be generous with their donations to help boost the local service which helps so many in the county.

"The price of a cup of coffee could save someone's life. I want people to know if they are in a dark place that it does get better - just talk to someone you won't be judged."

The Franciscan Friary is now offering a range of special cards to mark the various religious celebrations that traditionally occur at this time of the year. | By Sean Moriarty In line with current Government COVID-19 restrictions the Friary office remains closed to the public.

However, it is operating behind closed doors between the hours of 9.30am – 4pm daily.

The spring months are usually very busy at the office with St Patrick’s Day, Mother’s Day, and Easter all falling within weeks of each other.

Staff at the Friary office are aware of

the importance of these occasions for their parishioners.

Man jailed after staying overnight in closed hotels | By Sean Moriarty Killarney Gardai are asking property and business owners to check their vacant premises for intruders following a spate of incidents on the Muckross Road recently.

On Monday, a local man received a seven month prison sentence after pleading guilty at Killarney District Court to a number of criminal damage and burglary incidents.

The accused broke into two buildings usually used as accommodation in the hospitality sector and spent several nights staying in these premises. He also caused criminal damage to both

premises on the Muckross Road.

He also stole a car from a car sales forecourt on Park Road and crashed it sometime later in Killarney town centre.

All three incidents took place in business premises that are currently closed due to Level 5 Lockdown measures that are in place to combat the spread of COVID-19.

With the restrictions set to remain in place until at least April 5, local Gardai are appealing to business owners to check their premises on a regular basis.

“It could be two to three weeks before they find the damage,” warned Superintendent Flor Murphy.

Although volunteers/fundraisers can’t be on the street collecting, we can still encompass the spirit of Daffodil Day, by joining the Irish Cancer Society and taking on the ‘12,000 steps a day in March’ challenge, to help to raise vital funds to support free services for people affected by cancer," Kathrina said.

Throughout the pandemic, Irish Cancer Society Night Nurses continued to support families across Kerry, allowing patients to spend their final days surrounded by their loved ones. And every Euro raised from fundraising online will make a real and lasting impact on people affected by cancer in Kerry.

The Irish Cancer Society Volunteer Driver service also continued throughout lockdowns, ensuring cancer patients could get to their chemotherapy appointments. The Society also introduced a remote counselling service to make sure cancer patients and their families across Kerry had access to care and support

Sadness at death of centenarian | By Michelle Crean News of the death of Thomas (Tom) O’Connell, Ross Road and formerly Meenkilly, Abbeyfeale, who turned 100 in late January, was met with sadness on Tuesday.

A private family funeral took place for Tom in St Mary's Cathedral yesterday morning (Thursday) followed by burial afterwards in Aghadoe Lawn Cemetery.

Tom was born in Meenkilly, Abbeyfeale on January 27, 1921. He worked as a manager in Currans Creamery and lived in Currans for 40 years before retiring to Scrahan Mews on Ross Road.

He was predeceased by his wife Mary almost two years ago.

He is survived by his children Gerard, Noel, Margaret and Joseph, daughterin-law Maria, son-in-law Brian, grandchildren Thomas, Eoin and Méabh, nieces and nephews, relatives, neighbours and friends.

TRAFFIC CHAOS: Roads in Fossa were badly hit by floods on Tuesday morning.

Torrential overnight rain on Monday night led to flooding and traffic chaos on Tuesday morning.

Healy-Rae told a Council meeting late last year.

Meanwhile, the Clydagh River on the Kilgarvan road came close to bursting its banks at Loo Bridge, a year after a portion of this road was washed into the river and forced the road to remain closed for several weeks to facilitate remedial works.

That road reopened on February 28, 2020 after being damaged during Storm Denis on February 9.

Flooding chaos in Killarney | By Sean Moriarty

Several roads in the Killarney area were closed with Listry and Glenflesk the worst hit.

The Milltown to Fossa road was flooded at Listry Bridge forcing Killarney bound-traffic to travel via Farranfore as the N72 Killorglin to Killarney road was closed at Fossa village.

This was the second closure on the N72 with the road also closed between the Laune Bridge and Beaufort Bridge due to heavy flooding in Ballymalis.

The Mill Road in Killarney was closed on Monday night and into Tuesday morning due to high water levels in the River Flesk near White Bridge.

The Glenflesk to Barraduff road, at Curreal, was also heavily flooded. This is a notorious spot for flooding and the subject of countless Government and Council debates.

“Torrents pour down the mountain and when there is a heavy rainfall they rush down into the main river which is slow-flowing. The position would be much worse than it was for some years past were it not for the fact that under the Local Authorities Act certain drainage was done,” according to a contemporary Oireachtas report.

Last December, and half a century after the priest’s deputation, local Councillor Maura Healy-Rae called on Kerry County Council and the Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) to outline plans for the improvement of the N22 in the Glenflesk area.

The Council and TII want to raise the road there to prevent further flooding but locals are concerned that this could ultimately contribute to additional flooding.

“The residents fear that their homes, lands and property will be flooded if the road is raised further and that a plan that prepares for the one hundred year flood, could adversely affect these residents every day in between that period,” Cllr

Meanwhile a number of paths, trails and car parks in Killarney National Park were deemed inaccessible and closed due to the flooding.

These routes included the Mass path from Derrycunnihy to Lord Brandons cottage, The Old Kenmare road from Derrycunnihy (through Incheens and Ullauns) where the Galway’s River has burst its banks, The Muckross-Dinis loop, the Old Kenmare Road at Cores / Esknamucky, from Ross Castle through Reen, the river walk from Whites Bridge to the Game Wood and the Lower road in Tomies Wood.

The car park at Ross Castle was also out of bounds.

New healthy meal service proving a hit The key to optimal health and fitness is the right nutrition and one local business has the answer.

Fitness coach Bobby Enright who runs Peak Performance Academy in Deerpark has added a new and unique service allowing members to sign up for freshly prepared cooked meals for the week.

Bobby set up his business in 2016 and has built up a solid membership since then. However, he noticed that meal planning and prepping can be stressful for those working on their fitness goals so he

decided to branch out.

Members can collect meals from a particular collection point on Monday, with enough for three days from Monday to Wednesday.

Then, for the second half of the week, they can make a second collection on Wednesday, which will see them through to Saturday.

“We use fresh local produce from local businesses,” Bobby said. “I want to help local suppliers.”

Killarney features in new Tourism Ireland video series | By Michelle Crean The Reeks District and Ross Castle in Killarney feature in a new series of short videos to showcase Ireland - the first features actor Pierce Brosnan.

Tourism Ireland teamed up with The Irish Film and Television Academy (IFTA) and local talent to create the series.

In the video, Pierce speaks about his love for Ireland and, in particular, for Kerry.

Viewers will also see some of the wonderful scenery and top attractions like the Ring of Kerry, Dingle, the Reeks District, the Skelligs, Killarney - Ross Castle and Cahergall Stone Fort among others.

High-level of construction compliance during restrictions | By Sean Moriarty Killarney Gardai say there is a high-level of compliance of COVID-19 regulations within the construction and allied sectors.

Under current Level 5 restrictions certain construction projects are exempt.

These include the construction of schools, health care facilities and social housing.

Larger Capital Investment projects – the Macroom Bypass for example – are also allowed to continue.

Local Gardai said they have received a number of complaints regarding construction work during the current lockdown.

“From time to time we get complaints and we have to respond to all complaints,” Superintendent Flor Murphy told the Killarney Advertiser. “By and large there is a high level of compliance.

Some works do require further investigation. We advise and encourage people, applying legal sanctions is the last thing we want to do, and in certain cases there are grounds to allow the work to continue.”

Early 2022 before international tourism gets back on track - report It will be at least 12 months before we will see any sort of return to normality within the international tourist industry according to the business groups that represent both inbound and outbound airline traffic. | By Sean Moriarty A report called 'Survival and Revival' published recently by the Irish Tourism Industry Confederation (ITIC) said that in an ideal world, Ireland’s Overseas Tourism demand would start to get back on track by Quarter 4 this year or Quarter 1 next year.

The report, seen by the Killarney Advertiser, predicts an increase in demand for what ITIC calls the ‘Visiting Friends and Family’ sector from September or October this year.

The report adds that the ‘Leisure Travel’ sector will take longer to recover as travellers remain hesitant about their own safety.

The report stated that the projections were dependent on an effective vaccine rollout in Ireland and source markets.

There were reasons to be hopeful too as the report said that the tourism industry could recover fast once it was given the green light to resume operations.

Grounded consumers have increased their personal savings, they will be anx-

ious to get back on the road and fuel prices will remain low for the foreseeable future.

The report said that business travel would be the last to get back to normal with the conference sector the least likely to recover to pre-COVID-19 times.

“Based on current conditions, there will be no international tourist flows before September and October ’21 with mixed market response due to uneven vaccination rollouts, and delays in establishing universal safe travel protocols. Effective recovery is delayed to 2022,” an online meeting of ITIC members was told last week.

Killarney is represented on the ITIC in several different ways, including through the Kerry Tourism Federation, the Killarney Chamber of Tourism and

Commerce, and the Irish Hotel Federation.

OUTBOUND TOURISM

The Irish Travel Agents Association (ITAA) also stated, that while the travel industry has continued to reschedule bookings to late 2021 to keep pace with fluctuating travel restrictions, a return to international travel this year is unlikely, which will lead to further cancellations in the latter half of 2021 and early 2022.

Members of the ITAA met with Minister for Transport Eamon Ryan and Minister of State responsible for international travel, Hildegarde Naughton.

The Ministers were told of the impact the pandemic and subsequent travel restrictions were having on the outbound Irish travel industry. Earlier this month

an ITAA delegation met with a Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications Networks.

The ITAA delegation told the committee that as a result of current restrictions on travel: “It is increasingly unlikely that international travel will resume in 2021, with the reopening date for international travel further delayed until early 2022. Travel agents are prevented from trading under current public health guidelines; however the industry is in the unique position that it must stay open to assist clients with refunds and to reschedule bookings.”

The ITAA said that 2021 bookings have been minimal so far, due in part to the slow rollout of vaccinations and consumers' lingering fears surrounding COVID-19. The trade association believes that higher levels of vaccinations are needed before a safe return to international travel will be viable.

The majority of bookings being made at the moment are from consumers rescheduling trips which were due to take place in 2020, and were disrupted by the outbreak of the pandemic.

According to the ITAA, most bookings are being made for the latter part of 2021, with many travel agents apprehensive to proceed with bookings without certainty to protect customers and avoid last minute cancellations and disruptions as seen in 2020.

“So far there has been a trickle of bookings from September onwards, but no great numbers to any particular destination. In addition to this, younger people probably won’t receive the vaccine until sometime in late summer, which has certainly had an effect on bookings. We expect that bookings won’t really kick off until greater numbers of the population have received the vaccine,” the ITAA’s CEO Pat Dawson said.

Hoteliers call for urgent Business community supports to safeguard jobs welcomes rebrand plan Hotel and guesthouse owners in Kerry are calling for an urgent review of business and employment supports for the hospitality sector following the announcement at the weekend that it is unlikely to reopen before mid-summer.

They are also asking the Government to intervene with the banks to ensure that appropriate supports and engagement processes are in place for business owners and their team members until COVID-19 has been suppressed. Bernadette Randles, chair of the Kerry branch of the Irish Hotels Federation warns that failure to act now will have long-term implications that could take years to repair.

“Public health must always be the number one priority and we recognise the difficult balance the Government has to achieve. However, if the all-impor-

tant summer period is being eroded, additional supports are required now to safeguard businesses and the livelihoods they support until society reopens and the sector and wider tourism industry can recover,” she said.

“The news at the weekend resulted in acute frustration and anxiety for many people. Prior to this pandemic, some 15,700 livelihoods were supported by tourism and hospitality here in Kerry with the sector contributing €592 million to the local economy. Hotels and guesthouses not only provide local employment opportunities, they buy local services, source locally produced food and provide a vital infrastructure in support of local business and communities.

A severely devastated tourism and hospitality sector would be a major loss to the economy and society here for many years to come.”

Killarney’s business community has described proposals to rebrand the town to facilitate its further development as a gateway to the Wild Atlantic Way as an exciting opportunity for stakeholders.

They say the plan will ensure all of Kerry is best positioned to further develop and prosper in a structured and focused manner.

Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce President, Cllr Niall Kelleher, said the town has worked exceptionally hard to earn its position as the premier tourist town in the country, and all involved in its promotion, internationally and domestically, have helped provide the resources required to create a world class tourism brand.

“To recover from the commercial and physical devastation resulting from

the COVID-19 pandemic, initially in the short to medium term, Killarney Chamber is looking forward to working with Fáilte Ireland and the other stakeholders in utilising all available platforms and marketing collateral to rebuild the tourism sector and to regain Killarney and Kerry’s place as the most wonderful area to visit,” he said.

“As an important gateway to the gem that is the Wild Atlantic Way, we are looking forward to playing our part in the overarching brand while, at the same time, retaining the town’s very unique identity,” he added.

Fáilte Ireland has said rebranding Killarney and stressing its reputation as a world class tourism destination brand will have significant advantages for the entire county as it would encourage people to stay longer and visit other areas around Kerry.

Transition Year students from across the county got a chance to learn a lot about law last week as part of The Bar of Ireland’s TY Programme ‘Look into Law’.

St Brigid's Secondary School student Meadhbh Bennett filled us in this week on what she learned.

"During midterm, I was very fortunate to be able to take part in an online programme. This course was run over four days from Monday to Thursday with 38 other TY students. Normally, students would have gone up to Dublin for the week but this year the course took place virtually through Zoom. I was also very lucky to get a place on the course, as it was a nationwide lottery-based system.

Even though the days were long, I had an amazing time. Each day began at 10am and finished at around 4pm. It was a great experience, and the course leaders Cian Monahan and Suzanne Crilly were lovely.

There was a wide variety of topics covered throughout the programme ranging from Criminal Law to Human Rights, we also covered different topics such as Aviation Law and Social Media and the Law." There were a plethora of guest speakers giving lectures each day and it was very interactive, she added.

different activities. The highlight of the week was the ‘Mini Mock Trial’. Each student was given a different role: a judge, a landlord and a tenant. I was a landlord but unfortunately I lost the case due to ‘lack of evidence’. Later I found out that all the landlords lost their cases too as the evidence against them was too strong.

I found this course to be extremely enjoyable, inspirational, diverse and interactive. On the last day, each participant was presented with a certificate of completion. I am delighted to have done this course as it has given me a great insight into the complex world of the legal profession and the different career prospects stemming from it."

It's awesome in many ways, connecting us to people we may never have been able to connect with otherwise, lets us learn and discover new things, and helps us disseminate information to large groups of people quickly and easily.

Those things can be great but they can also be problematic because while good information is great, bad information can be extremely dangerous.

Last week, I saw that a well-known and very impressive coach posted the following: "If you don't feel dead by the end of your training, did you even workout?"

I get that this is the philosophy of many trainers and athletes, and I understand that it works for some. This really seems to be the norm amongst the fitness people I have observed, and can be the expectation in the clients who approach me. The assumption appears to be: if your body parts still work and your clothes aren't soaked through with sweat and you don't want to puke after you're done training, you haven't done it right.

However, I personally do not ascribe to the theory that you have to feel absolutely beat up in order to get great results from your training. I believe that once in a while it can have some benefits, but done habitually, I'd say that that sort of training can be detrimental for a number of reasons.

HERE IS SOME SCIENCE TO BACK UP THE “ANTI – NO PAIN NO GAIN” GANG.

Training to failure has limited, if any, performance benefits over not training to failure.

In a meta-analysis of eight studies, Davies, et al. (2015) noted a statistically significant improvement in strength in non-failure training individuals over those training to failure. Izquierdo-Garraben, et al. (2009) also notes: "once a given ‘‘optimal’’ volume is reached, a further increase in training volume does not yield more gains and can even lead to reduced performance in experience resistance-trained subjects". i.e: having a skilled and experienced coach who can titrate the correct dose and volume of work for you is of great importance to you.

1) There may be some slight advantages for muscle growth for those training to failure and it appears that it can be beneficial or even sometimes necessary when performing low-intensity repetitions (Nóbrega & Libardi, 2016) but for the most part, training to failure does not appear necessary for performance gains.

2) Training to failure can produce less-than-optimal hormonal responses, at least for the short term. Consistently training to failure or exhaustion can lead to decreases in resting testosterone (Willardson, et al, 2010).

3) Rest and recovery are necessary for performance and muscle gains!

In a study by Schoenfeld, et al (2016) longer rest periods, in this case, three minutes over one minute, were associated with better strength and conditioning gains in younger, resistance-trained men.

Personally, this makes all kinds of sense to me - you will generally not be able to properly perform a lift of any significance if you aren't well-rested.

4) Training to failure may increase risk of injury. I think it's important to note though, that there does not appear to be any studies that actually demonstrate increased injury due to training to failure.

So, to answer the question posed by the trainer/athlete that inspired this blog: If you don't feel dead by the end of your training, well, yes, I can confirm you still worked out. If you trained to fatigue, but still were able to complete good reps, chances are, you did just fine and will see great results even if you came out of it alive.

Don’t be discouraged by your garden I am inspired by the vast amounts of rainfall this past week, to write about plants suitable for ‘wet places’.

My garden is one large, wet, muddy site currently, and it amazes me each year that plants survive. It has been a process of trial and error over the years, and I would say to anyone who is disheartened by plants failing: don’t be discouraged.

Theoretically, on paper and in magazines, gardening looks easy. We all know that one person who has green fingers, and that one person who can ‘grow anything’.

They give you slips or seedlings, expecting them to take, and when they die, if you are like me, you are in an agony of guilt, then try to find a replica in a garden centre to prove that you did not kill their gift. This will only lead to a vicious cycle – and empty pockets.

There are many people, since the COVID situation, who are fairly new to gardening and I feel they maybe need some encouragement at this time of year. Firstly, remember - everyone’s garden is different.

Older town gardens can have beautiful spoil, cultivated over generations. On the other hand, there are lots of town gardens which consist of a thin layer of soil over rubble. Rural gardens can also vary hugely, even within the one garden soil types can be different. For example, in my own garden I have a section which is boggy, one with clay, another which is very dry and yet another where the soil is excellent. Sloped sites can pose all sorts of problems too!

So, back to plants for ‘wet areas’. It’s important to ascertain what type of ‘wet’

soil you have. Clay will feel soapy in your hand. This type of soil tends to go rock hard when it is dry, so fairly hardy plants are needed. Willows, dogwoods, viburnums and phormiums are excellent choices. Willow ‘Mt. Aso’ is currently looking great with big pink catkins.

If your soil is peaty, or boggy, it will hold water but be quite free draining, provided the water can run off. This soil is light and humus rich, often with an acidic pH - ideal for Rhododendrons, heathers and blueberries. If your site is windy, the deciduous azaleas are a good choice, such as A. mollis varieties. Magnolias, Enkianthus and Bamboo will also do well. If the site remains waterlogged, you will need to consider plants which will survive this; Phormium, Gunnera and marsh plants such as Iris and marsh marigolds.

If your soil is just badly drained, but otherwise has a fairly good layer of soil, many plants will thrive. Hypericum is a great plant, and there are many varieties now which produce different coloured berries after the yellow flowers, such as H. ‘Magical Pumpkin’ which has masses of peach coloured berries throughout the autumn. Physocarpus has beautiful dark red foliage, and is an ideal large shrub, as is viburnum opulus – these plants compliment each other very well!

In short, there is a plant to suit every type of wet soil – but do try to incorporate drainage whenever you can!

Retiring at 65 and social welfare payments Question: I have to retire at 65, and can’t claim my

State pension until I’m 66. What can I do?

Answer: Many people, under their contract of employment, must retire at 65.

However, State pensions are not paid until you are 66. If you retire at 65, you may be able to get a new social welfare benefit. This is paid until you reach 66 and can claim a State pension. It is similar to Jobseeker’s Benefit, but you don’t need to be looking for work or sign on at your local Intreo centre. It is only available to people aged 65.

To qualify for this benefit, you must have stopped work, be living in Ireland and meet the social insurance (PRSI) conditions. If you were an employee, you must have paid at least 39 PRSI contributions at Class A, H or P or have credited contributions in the governing contribution year – this is the second last complete tax year before the year you claim. You must also have paid at least 104 PRSI contributions at Class A, H or P (or at least 156 PRSI contributions at Class S).

If you were self-employed, you must have paid 52 PRSI self-employment contributions at Class S in the governing contribution year and have paid at least 156 PRSI contributions at Class S (or at least 104 PRSI contributions at Class A or H).

You can take up a course provided you

inform the Department of Social Protection. You can also continue in subsidiary employment.

You can claim for an adult dependant and any dependent children.

You will continue to get credited contributions while you are on the payment – these can count towards your State pension.

The quickest way to apply for the scheme is through MyWelfare.ie. You can also email forms@welfare.ie.

They just grow as they always did, at this time of the year, Free from the pandemic, that has filled us all with fear.

Nature is impervious, to this universal plight, For it carries on regardless, be it day or night.

While the climate changes, from what we used to know, Hardy little snowdrops, just peep up through the snow.

They last for a month or so, and then disappear, To make room for daffodils, to thrill us every year.

After a barren winter, buds appear on tips of boughs, And then burst into foliage, miraculously somehow.

Meanwhile dormant primroses, await their turn to bloom, And play their part as harbingers, of Mother Nature’s boon.

Little frogs are busy too, producing their frogspawn, To wriggle into tadpoles, in sheltered woodland ponds.

While all this is going on, bluebells wait patiently, To appear in thousands, in clumps in verdant fields.

And all the while the sun and moon, above us do their thing, And come and go like clockwork, impervious to Covid.

Do you understand stress and its affects?

Stress is defined as an internal response or reaction of the body, physiological and psychological, to particular demands or excessive pressures. In psychological research, stress is identified as the resultant effect of such transactions between that of the individual and their environment, and thus resulting effects on the physical, mental, emotional, behavioural and social health and well-being of an individual. This, often intensified response is deemed to depend on, an individual’s perception of an event/situation and their ability to respond to such situations, demands, threats or challenges (Lazarus, 1991).

While all the terminology or defi-

nitions in relation to stress appear to depict an image in an ill or poor light, it is important to note that stress is in fact very normal and is very much a part of each and every single one of our lives for better and for worse. Stress is a requirement of our being and is needed to facilitate physiological and psychological responses to changes within ourselves and our environments. What we often don’t realise, is that stress is actually a highly important measure or tool when used effectively.

It’s inbuilt within us all, as a safety measure for survival, to protect us from harm or danger. Stress in fact, only becomes difficult or damaging over time, particularly when the body and brain is ex-

posed to a continuance of stress releasing hormones that are aimed at increasing an individual’s alertness or abilities to act or respond - a system that is inbuilt for short term purposes of protection only, to increase bodily reaction and alertness to an event.

It is in this response, when initiated for prolonged periods of time, that stress becomes a negative, resulting in harsh effects to an individual’s health and well-being.

Luckily however, research has identified two key characteristics that aid our ability to manage, relieve and combat persistent levels of stress and stress exposure.

A well-known stoic philosopher, Epictetus, once said, “people are not disturbed by things, but

by the view which they take of them”. His saying illustrates that the way in which a person views or sees an event or situation, how they in fact perceive it, has a significant correlating relationship to how they will respond to such an event. How we view something, has a direct influence on how we react to that something.

For now, just stop and take a look at how you are perceiving a stressful or stress induced event.

How is it really affecting you? Are you in control of your response or is the stressor in control of you and it? Stay tuned for next week, where I’ll be discussing stress management techniques and the know how to bring a better balance to your life.

Your skin will be nicely softened from the steam in the bath, which is great as the pores open from the heat giving you a really great deep cleansing facial.

Next step; use an exfoliator for your

The announcement by Education Minister Norma Foley that Leaving Cert students are to be given a choice between opting for Accredited Grades, sitting Leaving Cert Exams or the option to do a mixture of the two, has been broadly welcomed by students.

Most of the students I have spoken to are relieved that there is a choice. However, for many of you that has raised lots more questions and worry about how to choose which option is best. My advice is to look carefully at the information as it becomes available in the coming weeks before deciding what the best choice is for you personally. In the meantime engage with your online work and study and try to stay as focused as you can on the end goal – to get through the Leaving Cert and beyond it!

THE CHOICES

Accredited Grades: You will have the option to opt in to receive State Examination Commission (SEC) Accredited Grades via the student examinations portal on a subject by subject basis. Just like was the case for the Class of 2020, these grades will be based on the professional judgement of the teacher, will go through a form on in-school alignment and then will be subject to the national standardisation process, details of which have not yet been issued. The closing date of student work that can be taken into account for the SEC-Accredited Grades process will be May 14.

The Minister has said that the oral and coursework component of the exams will not form part of the Accredited Grade process. Schools will close on May 28 to allow for the administration part of the grading process to take place.

Leaving Cert & LCA Exams: The timetables for the Leaving Cert exams which are due to start on Wednesday, June 9 are now available on www.examinations.ie. You will have the option of doing one, some or all of the exams and details of when and how to register will be issued in due course. Orals, coursework and practicals where it is possible to do them, will form part of the examination process. Orals are expected to take place over the Easter holidays and practicals where possible soon after that.

It is envisaged that results will be issued at the normal time in mid-August. The SEC’s Candidate Portal is expected to open in the week of March 8 to allow students to make choices. You will need to register, confirm your subjects and levels and then opt for the exams and/or the SEC Accredited Grades. Further details will be issued in advance. There will be no fees payable for the 2021 exams or for SEC Accredited Grades.

There is a lot to take in and think about over the coming weeks. It may be a difficult decision to make but remember you have nothing to lose by opting for both.

Getting back to face to face teaching and learning will bring a much needed boost to those of you who have been struggling with working remotely and being back in the classroom with friends and teachers will bring a renewed sense of energy and reassurance in this really difficult time.

Mayor pays tribute to Local Link bus drivers

A special message was relayed to local bus drivers this week to thank them for their continued service during the pandemic. | By Michelle Crean Mayor of Kerry, Patrick O’ Connor Scarteen paid tribute to the invaluable service being provided by Local Link Kerry bus operators and drivers throughout the county.

With buses operating from Ballylongford to Bonane and Barraduff to Brandon Point and everywhere in between, Local Link Kerry services cover the length and breadth of the Kingdom.

And the service is set to expand with additional services for the Dingle Peninsula which they hope to roll out soon.

“Local Link Kerry bus services continue to operate, providing a valuable service for those who need public transport to go about their daily lives," Alan O’Connell, General Manager of Local Link Kerry said.

"Great tribute must be paid to the drivers who are working every day on the frontline providing a service and keeping passengers safe. I am sure our passengers will agree that their work has been greatly appreciated. During this third lockdown we have again seen some regular passengers cocooning or opting not to travel and drivers are collecting their shopping, prescriptions or meals and wheels and delivering it to their house on the return leg of the bus service.”

"As Local Link Kerry contracts bus operators to provide their services, it is important to recognise the inward investment of over €1 million that Local Link Kerry receives from the National Transport Authority which is then paid to bus operators all over the county, that’s a huge investment in rural Kerry."

Global audience tunes into uplifting online concert | By Michelle Crean A record number of listeners from across the world turned up the volume as they tuned in for a very special concert from Killarney town on Wednesday night.

Local musicians and singers decided to brighten the dark days a little by organising ‘A night of songs and music to lift the spirit’ from St Mary's Cathedral.

And, as current restrictions meant no live audience - it didn't deter anyone - as 4,000 enjoyed the sounds from singers Lillie and Jean Foley, pianist Noel O’Sullivan and violinist Olwyn Trant.

"We did a selection of chart and religious songs," he told the Killarney Advertiser yesterday (Thursday).

"Lilly sang 'La Vie a Rose' channelling her inner Edith Piaf, Olwyn played a melody from 'The Greatest Showman'.

The girls sang some lively numbers and 'Mise Éire'."

The singers finished with 'Pie Jesu' and Noel read Brendan Kennelly's poem 'Begin Again'.

"The concert was streamed via two separate feeds. The parish webcam counted 2,600 views and on Facebook, which was managed by Rachel Foley, we had 1,500 with people from all over Ireland, Europe, America, Australia and England."

Team Ireland athletes launch ‘Don't Scroll By’ campaign Team Ireland athletes have collectively taken a stand against online hate speech this week as the Olympic Federation of Ireland (OFI) launched their new campaign ‘Don’t Scroll By’.

The campaign is an initiative of the Olympic Federation of Ireland’s Athletes’ Commission and has been launched with the support of Indeed, an official partner of the Irish Olympic team. It calls on the public and sporting stakeholders nationwide to adopt a zero-tolerance approach to online abuse, discrimination and hate speech, and to #DeleteBanReport any of this type of commentary they witness online.

They are calling on the Irish public and sporting stakeholders nationwide to join together as one to actively oppose hate speech and online abuse, and to react purposefully whenever they see it. The OFI is asking everyone involved at all touchpoints of Irish sport to take action and make a public stance by showing that as a nation, we are anti-racism, anti-discrimination and anti-hate speech.

The campaign was launched this week with a new video 'Don't Scroll By - Delete Ban Report' on YouTube, in which Team Ireland uses the Olympic Values of Striving for Excellence and Respect to highlight the power that people collectively have to eliminate hate speech from social media channels, to make online sport a hate free zone.

But Donald J Trump is the gift that keeps on giving.

Health overtakes money as the Irish public’s biggest concern in 2021 Three out of 10 people in Ireland say that health is their biggest worry in 2021. This is the primary finding of the latest survey from leading protection specialist Royal London conducted in January.

Further extension for Driving Licences Minister of State Hildegarde Naughton TD has announced details of a further extension to the expiry dates of driving licences.

The move comes as the EU and national Governments take steps in response to the disruption caused

by COVID-19 to driver licensing services across the EU. The extension will apply to different groups of licence holders including those who benefited from extensions in 2020.

Drivers who are affected by the extension are encouraged to check the new expiry date of their driving licence by using the expiry date calculator on www. ndls.ie. Enter the expiry date printed on your driving licence into the calculator and it will tell you the new expiry date.

The change will apply as follows: • Any licence holder, who has not already renewed, and whose licence expired between March 1, 2020 and May 31, 2020 will have a new expiry date of July 1, 2021.

• Any licence holder, who has not already renewed, and whose licence ex-

pired between June 1, 2020 and August 31, 2020 will have 13 months (which includes the previous extension) added to their expiry date. By way of example a licence which expired on August 31, 2020 will have a new expiry date of September 30, 2021.

• Any licence holder, who has not already renewed and whose licence expiry date is between September 1, 2020 and June 30, 2021 will have an extra 10 months added to their expiry date. By way of example a licence which expires on June 30, 2021 will have a new expiry date of April 30 2022.

Drivers who have been granted an extension and who have already booked an appointment at an NDLS centre to renew their licence are being asked to cancel the appointment, to make it available for others who need it.

National Driver Licence Service (NDLS) centres remain open to essential workers.

The nationwide survey of one thousand people was undertaken by iReach and sought to ascertain, for the sixth year running, what is the greatest cause for concern amongst the Irish public for the year ahead. While money topped the poll in surveys conducted from 2016 to 2020, health is, unsurprisingly given the ongoing pandemic, the most common source of worry..

“Given the ongoing pandemic and all that we have seen and experienced over the last 12 months, it’s not at all surprising that people say they are most worried about their health in 2021," Raymond Monahan of Royal London in Kerry said "It’s gone from being the biggest worry for 19% of people surveyed in 2016, to

30% this year. COVID-19 and the lockdowns have completely changed everyday life for most of us, and additionally highlighted to us all the importance of our health. So, it’s to be expected that it’s top of peoples’ concerns this year, and for the first time ever in our annual nationwide survey.”

The number of people citing loneliness as their biggest source of worry for 2021 (18%) more than doubled when compared to 2020 (7%). The survey results reveal that loneliness and social isolation affect the youngest cohort of respondents the most, as it is the top concern for people aged 18 to 24 (39%).

The Royal London findings echo a NUI Galway survey undertaken as part of a UNESCO study last year which showed that the pandemic has caused persistent loneliness and social isolation in young people. In the survey, teenaged respondents reported high levels of anxiety about their future and how their education, careers and family would be impacted by the pandemic.

Shopfront enhancement scheme to be piloted in Tralee Kerry County Council has announced a pilot scheme for enhancements to shopfronts in Tralee town centre.

The Tralee Town Centre Pilot Shopfront Enhancement Scheme aims to improve the streetscape environment by encouraging and supporting business owners to upgrade their shopfronts. The scheme applies initially to Upper and Lower Castle Street in the town.

It is intended that the scheme will result

in a more attractive environment that residents, visitors, shoppers and businesses can enjoy. It is also envisaged that this scheme will assist in promoting Tralee as an attractive place for social and business interaction, thereby increasing the vitality and viability of the town, with positive benefits for all.

Funding for the initiative was secured through the Department for Rural and Community Development under the Town and Village Renewal Scheme. If the pilot initiative is successful, consid-

eration can be given at a later stage to rollout of the scheme to other locations, subject to a suitable funding stream being identified.

Cool running for Nagle this weekend Rallying in the Arctic Circle will be a different experience for Paul Nagle this weekend.

The Aghadoe man, and his driver Craig Breen, are taking part in the second round of the World Rally Championship driving for the Hyundai Motorsport World Rally Team.

With temperatures set to drop to -20°C, preparation for the Arctic Rally Finland is much different to other rallies.

Aside from standard in-car equipment

such as a fire extinguisher, first aid kit and a reflective warning triangle, every competing car must contain a pack of winter clothing for the driver and co-driver in case they become stranded mid-stage in the frozen forests.

“The idea is that if you retire somewhere in the middle of nowhere you might have to stay there for quite a bit of time before we run the stage so it’s important that you can stay outside the car and still keep yourself warm,” explained clerk of

the course Kai Tarkiainen.

“Therefore you need to carry warm hats and mittens and an overall or something warm, a coat, trousers and proper boots.

I think the boots are the most important bit really because if you can keep your feet warm then the rest of the body stays warm.”

Another aspect of the rally that has to be taken into consideration is the fact that spectators are not allowed due to COVID-19 restrictions in Finland.

Drivers use the high snowbanks to lean their cars through the corners but sometimes the banks give way, sending the car off the road.

Usually a band of willing spectators are on hand to lift the car back onto the track.

In the absence of fans, drivers will carry two snow shovels in the rally car so they can dig their own way out of the deep snow.

The rally gets underway at 1pm Irish time today (Friday). It is based in Rovaniemi, the capital of Lapland and Santa’s home town. Indeed, the rally headquarters is one of Santa’s famous workshops.

An extraordinary year in the residential property market The DNG Residential Market Review for 2020 and outlook for the year ahead was published this week.

It has shown that 2020 was certainly an extraordinary year in the residential property market and construction sector. The year started strongly, however the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in March brought activity to a halt as the economy and wider society were effectively shut down for almost three months meaning viewings and sales could not take place, new stock could not be brought to the market and transactions were delayed.

At this juncture it is fair to say that most forecasters overestimated the negative impact that the pandemic would have on the residential property market for the year, and to a degree, underestimated the strength of demand and interest in

the market.

When the economy reopened from June onwards, in line with a loosening of COVID-19 restrictions, it became clear that the market would prove more resilient than initially forecast. Prices had fallen marginally in Dublin and nationally during the first six months of the year, but due to the strength of underlying demand combined with a shortage of stock available in the market, prices rebounded in the latter half of 2020 ending the year marginally ahead of where they started.

DEPOSITS

Indeed, one consequence of the pandemic was a large jump in the savings rate in 2020, as people spent less and, in many cases, moved back to their family home from rented accommodation in the main urban areas. This shift from paying rent to saving meant that many potential

house buyers were able to accumulate deposits for their own home at a much quicker rate. When the market reopened later in the year there was certainly an element of demand brought forward as first-time buyers who had anticipated purchasing in 2021 and beyond, found themselves in the position to apply for mortgages earlier than initially expected.

SHARP RISE

Mortgage approvals rose sharply throughout the autumn and into winter and in October the Banking Payments Federation Ireland saw the largest number of monthly loan approvals since their records began in 2011. During 2020 a total of 43,151 mortgages were approved to the value of €10,340 million, however, despite the pandemic, the value of approvals was only 6.7% lower than 2019 highlighting the resilience in the market.

Looking ahead this year, forecasting visibility remains somewhat clouded due to the ongoing COVID-19 situation, however positive news on the vaccine front and hope of a return to more normal market conditions bodes well for the residential sector. Residential property prices can reasonably be expected to rise by low single digit figures in the year ahead as the strength of effective demand in the market exceeds the available supply of properties either on or coming to the market. Latest estimates indicate the new housing output levels for 2021 will again be challenged this year as the current lockdown impacts on completions, and further temporary lockdowns cannot yet be ruled out which would impact supply to an even greater extent.

With the rollout of vaccinations will come easing of restrictions. As soon as physical property viewings are restored the remainder of 2021 is likely to be a much busier time in the property market. The second half of 2020 certainly underlined the high demand for property on a local level. 2021 will see housing stock still trail demand and because of this property prices are likely to remain strong.

Inflation fears spark market sell-off Sector rotation across the major US equity indexes took hold this week.

A broadly upbeat fourth-quarter earnings season had powered Wall Street's main indexes to record highs earlier in the month, but fears over an imminent inflation surprise dampened this enthusiasm as the month drew to a close.

Higher than expected inflation and retail sales figures in January coupled with the pending $1.9 Trillion support package in the US is positive news in terms of an economic recovery but gave rise to fears over a faster than expected reflation timeline.

This prospect of rising inflation triggered caution over lofty equity valuations, hitting shares of high-flying technology-related companies. The COVID favourites, including Microsoft, Facebook, Alphabet's Google, Netflix and Amazon, fell as investors looked to bank some of the gains made since last March. Investors opted instead for cyclical stocks set to benefit from pent-up demand as the economy reopens.

This week, market conversations were dominated by the re-emergence of inflation, with longer-term bond yields jumping to their highest point in a year. The idea that higher than expected inflation could negatively impact stock market performance was the major talking point.

I understand where the argument is coming from. Firstly, any rise in bond yields will negatively impact the equity risk premium that currently exists. Secondly, higher borrow rates will squeeze company margins at a time of record corporate debt rates.

With that said, I believe that furor around the recent uptick in inflation may be somewhat overstated. While inflation has emerged from hibernation, it remains below the targeted 2% range and is still low by historical standards. Equities have traditionally performed well within the 1-4% inflation range. For me, the inflation movement is reflective of an inevitable

What kind of insurance do you need when building your own house More than half of all new houses built in Kerry in the past five years were one-off houses in the countryside.

A large proportion of these houses will have been built using direct labour. Below I will outline the insurance implications when building your own house.

FIRE COVER

If you are applying for a mortgage on the house your bank will request their interest to be noted on a 'Fire Policy'. If you are using a building contractor you will be able to obtain a 'Fire in the Course of Construction Policy'. This type of policy is usually only accepted prior to the commencement of any construction works. In the situation where you are using a contractor you should request copies of their combined liability policy

and contact works policy for your own protection.

SELF BUILD

If you are using direct labour and individually appointed sub-contractors then you will need a 'Self-build Policy'. This type of policy covers Employers' Liability for your legal liability for accidental death or injury of an employee and 'Public Liability' to protect you as the property owner for your legal liability for accidental death, injury or third party property damage. This type of policy will also cover the contract works in progress against for example, fire, storm, flood, and malicious damage to name a

few. The policy can extend to cover materials for use in the project, plant tools and equipment including temporary site huts. Your mortgage bank's interest can be noted on this policy for your mortgage application.

Self-build policies will include cover for professional fees such as architects, surveyors and engineers' fees, demolition and removal of debris costs and hire charges in the event of an insured loss for hired in plant. The policy period options can range from 12 months to 24 months in duration.

The Scoring End Every pitch has one, but what makes it “easier” to score into one goal than the other? Adam Moynihan investigates this strange phenomenon.

Your team is down at half-time and struggling. After a quick bout of soul-searching, maybe even some finger-pointing, the manager tells you to settle down as he launches into a season-defining team talk. More of this, less of that, these lads aren’t up to much etc. etc. You bounce on your toes and head back towards the pitch, but there’s still time for one more nugget of encouragement. One line that will render your lacklustre first-half performance meaningless, banish all self-doubt and restore the confidence you need to stage a heroic comeback.

“We’re playing into the scoring end as well, boys.”

On the surface it might seem like a silly thing to say, especially to the uninitiated. The posts are the same width at both sides of the pitch. The crossbars are the same height. It’s the very same patch of grass. But ask any footballer if they have a favourite end to shoot into

and the answer will be a resounding ‘yes’.

For some reason players do feel as though they find it easier to score at one end of the ground, and whatever ground you’re at, there tends to be an overwhelming consensus between players (both home and away), officials and supporters as to which end is the “scoring end”. Everyone knows without really knowing why. Can this odd phenomenon be explained logically, or is it pure superstition?

THE PARK

The home of football is probably as good a place as any to start our investigation and the majority of people say that in Killarney’s Fitzgerald Stadium, the Lewis Road end is easier to kick into than the scoreboard end. I reached out to a number of Kerry players past and present and the majority agree that it is tougher to play down into the scoreboard end of the ground. But why? They say the wind

But why? is the primary factor and some amateur meteorology on my part confirms that our prevailing south-westerly breeze would tend to blow from the Torc Terrace corner of the stadium (between the stand and the scoreboard terrace) diagonally across the field to the far corner of the terrace side.

That much makes sense. Now, let’s see if the stats back this up. In Kerry’s last 10 matches in Killarney dating back to 2017, 181 points (including goals) have been scored into the Lewis Road end…

And a total of 202 points have been registered at the scoreboard end. That means that on average Kerry and their

opponents have managed 2.1 points per game less while shooting into the supposed “scoring end”.

If we isolate Kerry’s totals in these matches, we see that the home team have kicked or punched 112 points playing into the “scoring” goal, and 116 points down in front of the scoreboard.

The opposition, meanwhile, have found the scoreboard end far more appealing.

They have racked up 86 points at that side of the pitch, while notching just 69 at the Lewis Road end.

However, if we look a little closer, we notice an interesting trend. Points scored over the bar are identical at both ends of the pitch (160), but twice as many goals have been scored at the scoreboard end (14 versus 7). This is, perhaps, where the famous wind comes into play. As it is more difficult to kick points into the breeze blowing down from the scoreboard side, Kerry and their opponents seem to be going for goal more often when playing in this direction. The Kingdom have managed six goals in their last 10 halves of football facing the scoreboard, compared to four going the other way. Their opponents have fared even better in this

26.2.2021 department, scoring eight goals into the scoreboard end and just three into the Lewis Road net.

Having said that, both home and away teams are still managing to score the same amount of points playing into the “scoring end” as they are playing into the “bad end”.

So, if this statistical snapshot is anything to go by (which, in fairness, it might not be considering it only covers intercounty matches played at the stadium since 2017) this idea that the Lewis Road end is easier to score into appears to be psychological.

MINDS

But the fact remains that every ground has its “scoring end”, and without vast swathes of empirical data to debunk the notion, it will continue to play on people’s minds.

A poll carried out on my Instagram (@ AdamMoynihan) confirmed that all of the local pitches have commonly defined scoring ends. For Dr Crokes, it’s the town end near Deerpark Pitch & Putt course. One player said that it always seems to be brighter at that side of the pitch, which could be explained by the fact that the opposite end is more sheltered with high embankments on all sides of the ground.

Another described the scoreboard end goal as “deceptive”, and I have a theory on this myself.

As a handy free taker (and by that I mean “a taker of handy frees” as opposed to “a handy taker of frees”), I’ve

always found it tricky to shoot into goals with open spaces behind them.

At Crokes, the top goal has an open area behind it (though high, the rear embankment is a good distance behind the posts) and I think it’s harder to gauge distance when kicking into this kind of backdrop. With no fixed points immediately behind the target, it can feel like the posts are miles away.

The same can be said of the top goal at my home ground in Derreen, which has a second pitch running directly up behind it. Legion folk will tell you that the scoring end is down towards the car park and I can definitely attest to the fact that, psychologically at least, it feels easier to play that way.

There may be another reason that I personally prefer shooting into that goal,

and it could also explain why every home team has a favourite end: familiarity. We almost always warm up at the clubhouse end, training drills are often staged there, and whenever I (used to) go for a kick on my own, I would tend to kick into that goal more often than the top one. I would say that the vast majority of clubs and players are the same.

We are creatures of habit so it stands to reason that the more we train in a certain environment, the more comfortable we are there, and this transfers over to match situations.

For Spa, the goal at the road end is considered to be the easier one to score into, something the natives attribute to an apparent slope in the pitch. Maybe it’s a simple trick of the eye but if there is even a very minor decline, perhaps

that could make a slight difference.

Once again, backdrop may be a factor: the top goal has a wide open space behind it.

The same can be said for Fossa, who also have another pitch behind their top goal. Players seem to agree that the road end, which has a neat row of trees serving as a backdrop, is the “scoring end”.

Kilcummin’s pitch is a slight anomaly with regards to the backdrop factor.

The scoreboard end is thought to be more favourable for forwards, but it is the supposed “bad end” that is more enclosed. However, it might actually be slightly too enclosed. The wall of tall, dark trees immediately behind the goal makes for an imposing structure, which, perhaps, is slightly off-putting for would-be scorers. I always found it tough to kick points up there anyway, although it would probably be unfair to blame that on the conifers.

Maybe it’s the prevailing wind. Maybe it’s familiarity. Maybe it’s the slant of the pitch. Maybe it’s the backdrop. Or maybe it’s all in our heads. Whatever the reason(s), “scoring ends” exist and in the ultra-competitive world of the GAA, their existence will continue to be a source of comfort to desperate teams in desperate times.

We might be down 10 points, but we’re playing into the scoring end this half.

Anything is possible.

‘The long-kicking and high-fielding is being lost’ In Part 2 of his interview with Eamonn Fitzgerald, Kerry legend Johnny Culloty reflects on his marvellous GAA career, and gives his assessment on the state of the modern game Last week we relived the sporting explots of Johnny Culloty in fishing, rowing, football, hurling, basketball, snooker and billiards.

This week we turn to golf and, first, the GAA, which continues to be central to his sporting life. Ever since he was a garsún in the Old Mon (the building now occupied by the Kerry Parents & Friends) he showed great promise, well encouraged by the Presentation Brothers, especially by Brother Mel. Then it was on to St Brendan’s College where he excelled in both codes, but managed little by way of colleges’ titles.

“Losing a Dean Ryan semi-final (U16.5 Munster hurling) was a big disappointment at that time – the day Pa O’Brien scored 5 goals,” said Johnny.

I checked that with Pa. “We were fierce disappointed. We were playing great, but out of the blue Midleton CBS came back at us (even though Pa scored five goals). We were well good enough to win it, as Midleton went on to skate through the final,” said five-goal Pa. Johnny first wore the coveted Kerry geansaí as a 14-year-old, not in football but in hurling. He went on to have a very successful hurling career even before he left the ranks of minor. He still has a great grá for the sport and particularly the all-conquering Killarney minor teams.

HUGE INFLUENCE

“Ben Campion was huge influence in making us minors successful, as well as Jim Dunne and the Gunner (Denis O’Brien). Ben ran raffles to get the money to buy the hurleys and the sliotars.

We had a very good Killarney team in the early 50s.

“We used to go up to the Park on Sundays and he came with a load of hurleys and a few sliotars. So we picked up a hurley, whatever size it was and played away. He was very strict in the training but it was very good.

“We were in five county minor finals in row, 1950 to 1954, winning the first three and losing the latter two. There were some great hurlers like Paddy

Bomber (O’Shea), Nip Looney (Jackie’s brother), Liam Brosnan (Fr Liam, Mangerton View, a priest in the USA), Brendan Carroll, Patrick O’Donoghue (former Town Clerk), Pa O’Brien, Denis O’Leary (that must be Sargey), Paddy Murphy, Mickey (his brother), and in 1952 there were seven of that Killarney team on the Kerry team beaten by Cork in the 1952 Munster Minor Hurling Championship in the Park.”

Johnny moved up to the Kerry junior and senior ranks very quickly and won a bagful of medals, including four National Hurling League Division 2 medals in ‘57, ’62, ’67 and ’68, as well as a JHC All-Ireland in 1961.

Johnny talked very affectionately about the 1969 Killarney team that won the County Championship. I set him going: sure, it was the footballers that starred in that game. I could visualise the broad smile and away he went.

“Do you know the half-forward line that day in the final against Stacks? Brendan Lynch on one wing, Pender (Tom Prendergast) on the 40 and myself on the other wing.” All of that trio won All-Ireland football medals “Ultan Breen was at wing back and a right good bit of stuff. Con O’Mara was the captain and you had two very fit

footballers at midfield: Tadhgie (Fleming) and Derry Crowley."

Pat Cronin, the star Clare hurler, spent a week with them before the match, showing the footballers the basics of wielding a camán. Hard to believe it but on the morning of the final he took Derry Crowley up to the Park and the Glenflesk football stalwart was glad of the late lesson. Years later he recalled: “After mass, Pat took me up to the Park to know could I hit the sliotar straight”.

He was quick learner and 90 seconds into the second half that afternoon he admitted he went for a point, mishit it and the sliotar eluded Bracker in the Stacks goal to put them ahead by a goal.

The sides were level at half-time, 1-1 to 0-4. Mick Spillane (Dr Crokes and Fossa) scored the first half goal and they kept in front to win 2-6 to 2-5.

“Dan Kelleher was a great dual player and was power of strength at centre back on that awful stormy wet day”, said Johnny.

LEGION SERVANT

He played for his much-beloved Legion club not just for years, but for decades, winning East Kerry Senior Championships in 1954, 1955 and 1967.

He gave great service as chairman of

the Legion from 1967 right through until 1975.

“Jameso (Donoghue, grandfather of the present Legion/Kerry player) took over from me in 1976 and was there for a few years.”

He was involved in everything Legion, as trainer, selector, supporter and he was very proud when the new club grounds at Derreen were opened.

“Dan Kelleher was a great help to us in this Prunty pitch. He had great expertise in soil matters and helped us so willingly over the years”.

In 1969 he captained Kerry to win the All-Ireland SFC for the 21st time, defeating Offaly in the final. East Kerry were county football champions from 1968 to 1970. Dr Crokes won the East Kerry SFC in 1968, but did not have any club player on the Kerry squad, so they nominated Johnny as captain. He won his fifth All-Ireland football medal in 1970.

“During all that time, Kerry did not have any sub goalkeeper and that did not change until later,” Johnny said.

Would you believe it, Johnny retired from intercounty after losing to Cork in the 1966 Munster final. Sure, he had enough won at that time between Legion, Kerry and Killarney.

THE MODERN GAME

As player, trainer and selector with so many Kerry teams over 70 years, I asked him about how the games had evolved.

“I saw an awful lot of old games on the TV during COVID-19 and I must say I really enjoyed them. Many years after they were played and they still they looked very well.”

Are you suggesting that they were better than the modern styles of play?

“I know times are different now and games change over time. In my time, first-time pulling was a feature. When the ball came your way you pulled on it first time and kept the play going. Nowadays the intercounty teams are hitting about 30 points. How many of these are coming from frees? Far too many.”

What about Michael Ó Hehir’s famous shemozzles?

“In football there is far too much hand-passing all over the field. On a very windy day you would of course handpass a lot more, but the long-kicking and high-fielding is being lost.”

Is there too much training at county and at club level?

“In my time with Kerry, we did nothing like they do now.

“In 1959 we did nothing for Munster, a very small bit for the replay of the All-Ireland semi-final against Cavan. Then the whole team came together three weeks before the final (v Dublin) and stayed in the Park Place (Hotel). We trained twice a day under Dr Eamonn O’Sullivan”.

That was the era of collective training, which was later banned by the GAA. I tell Johnny that I remember seeing him and his teammates walking down to morning mass in the Cathedral. I was in the Mon and Brother Gerald got us to pray that Moss O’Connor would recover from injury for the final.

“That was Fr Moss O’Connor, a sub in the final. I went over to England some years ago where he was celebrating his Golden Anniversary as a priest.”

“Dr Eamonn was in charge of the teams and unlike the system we have in Kerry now, where the manager picks his own selectors, for many years the clubs in the county voted for the selectors. That led to fierce canvassing.

“John Joe Sheehy was picking Kerry teams from the time he finished playing in 1930 and was there right up to the 60s. Of course, his four sons played with Kerry: Paudie, Niall, Briansy and Seán Óg.

“Paddy Bawn (Brosnan), Murt Kelly, Johnny Walshe and Jackie Lyne were there for years. I can tell you as player you didn’t say much to these men and

you got on with your own game. You had the same with Kerry hurling selectors such as John Joe O’Sullivan, Gale McKenna (Gerald’s brother), Gerald Whyte and Denis P of course (Denis P O’Sullivan, Kilgarvan P.O.). They were there for 20 years and more.

“Nowadays everyone is picking their best Kerry teams”.

Pundits? Spectators? Journalists?

UP THE MIDDLE

When Level 5 restrictions lift, Johnny will probably get off the exercise bike and dust down the golf clubs. “The way I started with golf was that Jackie Lyne (fellow Legion man) was playing at the time, so he asked me to go back to O’Mahony’s Point and I was able to hit the ball alright.”

Another understatement by the sportsman. Well-honed hurling/billiards/ snooker skills came into play and like all other sports he made a right fist of it. His handicap dropped quickly. I know he played off a 10 handicap at one stage and I would not be surprised if he went to single figures as well, such was his competitive spirit.

Angling, rowing, hurling, football, basketball, billiards, snooker, golf; Johnny is yerman for all sports for all seasons. “I tried ‘em all”, was the under-statement of Johnny Culloty, my choice for Killarney’s best all round sportsperson.

Always a joy to meet and discuss all things sport with, where éirí in airde and maoímh never dwelled in this sporting hero’s mindset.

His records speak for themselves. Go maire sé go céad. Take us away, Tina Turner. “You're simply the best, better than all the rest. Better than anyone, anyone I've ever met.”

Explorer appointed as performance coach for Kerry team

Roche set for gruelling two-day charity run

Glenflesk and East Kerry footballer Darragh Roche is preparing for a remarkably challenging charity run that he expects will take him “well outside [his] comfort zone”.

In the early hours of March 6, the talented forward will embark on the 4x4x48 challenge, an endeavour which will see him attempt to run four miles every four hours for 48 hours, so 12 four-mile runs in total.

Roche is taking the challenge in memory of his uncle, Denis Lucey, who sadly died following a battle with cancer in January 2020. All monies raised will go to the Night Nursing unit of the Irish Cancer Society.

Speaking to the Killarney Advertiser this week, Roche admitted that he had “never really done road running before”.

“I’ve done a few 5Ks alright but nothing too hectic, and it was more pitch running I was at,” he explained. “But when I set this (charity run) up, I said I better start doing something! I’ve been doing some road running the past few weeks now and trying to get the miles in. You’d definitely feel it on the body more than pitch sessions.

“At the moment I’m doing the four miles in 27 minutes. Now, that’s going well… I don’t know if I’m going to be able to do that for 12 runs! If I could keep it in between 30-45 minutes I’d be very happy. Then I’d have around three hours and 15 minutes to recover. The quicker I have them done, the longer I’ll have to recover. Having said that, after five or six runs I might be doing well to

get them done within the hour!”

Roche has planned out five or six different trails around his native Barraduff/ Glenflesk, and he says that during his three-hour recovery periods, he will be focussing mainly on refuelling.

“I’ll try to get as much food and as many carbohydrates as I can into myself, and try to recover as best I can. I’ll be hoping that I’ll have a good chef on the day.”

Initially, it was the Glenflesk man’s intention to keep the charity run low key, but he was quickly inundated with donations.

“When I started this, I was only going local with it. Nothing too major at all.

I had a goal of collecting €400 but it has blown up and we surpassed that straight away. It got so big that I had to set up a GoFundMe page.

“People have just been unreal. You don’t realise how good people are until you do something like this. This is my first time doing anything for charity and the response from people and the donations have just been insane.

“I went with the 4x4x48 because you can choose your own charity, and the main thing for me is that I can raise money and awareness for the Irish Cancer Society. I’ll be running for that, and it will really be in memory of my uncle as well.”

Kerry manager Peter Keane has put the finishing touches on his backroom team ahead of the 2021 season as adventurer Pat Falvey has been confirmed as the side’s sports performance coach.

Falvey’s exact responsibilities have not been made known, but it is expected that he will be asked to draw on his unique experiences as Ireland’s leading explorer to inspire the county’s footballers on their quest to dethrone the six-in-a-row-winning Dubs.

Falvey, a Cork native who resides in Beaufort, is best known as an adventurer who was the first person to scale the Seven Summits (the highest mountains of each of the seven continents) twice. He has also forged successful a career for himself in the business world and his company, Pat Falvey Worldwide Travel, promotes

itself as “Ireland’s leading adventure and corporate team-training company for over 25 years”.

On his website, the new Kerry sports performance coach is described as “an internationally acclaimed adventurer, author, inspirational speaker, corporate and personal mentor, and coach”, who “achieved his boyhood dream of becoming a millionaire by his mid-twenties”.

His bio also says that “he has developed highly effective presentations and courses that explore, inspire and guide people to challenge themselves to become their best selves”.

Kerry fans will be hoping that Falvey can do just that with the county’s senior footballers as The Kingdom look to bounce back from last year’s shock championship exit at the hands of Cork.

progress of the club's development both structurally and financially by the development committee and they are happy that it is nearing completion and should be ready for the start of this season. Chairman Eugene McSweeney outlined the huge input from volunteers, sponsors, club members and the wider Kilcummin community at home and abroad that made this possible. He also noted the dedication of the main developer and the sub-contractor in completing a facility that will be enjoyed for generations to come and lauded the commitment of the development committee over the last three years to see it to its conclusion.

Joint Treasurer Tim Casey stepped down after an incredible 16 years and was replaced by Pat O’Connor, while Willie Fleming was appointed Assistant Chairperson. Kieran Fleming takes over Insurance Officer from Donal Dwyer while Brid Fleming becomes Club Registrar. PRO for the last eight years Michael O’Riordan has stepped down and the executive will undertake to fill that position in the coming weeks.

COISTE NA NÓG: Our Coiste Na nÓg teams have been kept busy by their coaches with the U13, U11 and U9 boys all taking part in skills challenges. This week saw the start of the big skills competition for our U9s, the first round match ups were drawn by the Doherty family last Monday afternoon and the players took on their first challenge, ‘The Punt Kick’. The challenge is to see how many punt kicks the players can hit off the wall and successfully catch in 30 seconds alternating between their left and right feet. The older boys in the U13/U11 teams have recently also completed this challenge some attempting as many successful kicks in 60 seconds.

Our U15s are also keeping fit and ready for when the first ball of 2021 is thrown in, by training individually and improving on personal run times every week.

We hope to continue getting all of our juvenile teams active in the coming weeks, hopefully in preparation for when it is safe to return to training. CLUB DRAW EXTENDED: The National GAA Club Draw has been extended. To be in with a chance of winning make sure to purchase your tickets before May 1. Currow GAA COISTE NA NÓG: On Wednesday, February 17 the first ever Currow Coiste Na nÓg AGM was held online via Microsoft teams. There was a very good crowd in attendance and the following officers were elected on the night. Patron – Fr John Buckley, Presidents - Tadgh Walsh & Johnny Scanlon, Chairman - Frank Coffey, Vice Chairman - Pat Conway, Secretary – To Be Confirmed, Asst Secretary – To Be Confirmed, Treasurer – Tricia Brosnan, Asst Treasurer – Tone Brosnan, PRO - Con Enright, County Board Delegate - Pat Conway, East Kerry Board Delegate - Tone Brosnan, Castleisland District Delegate - Frank Coffey. The following coaches were appointed for the coming year ahead: U15: Con Enright, Liam Brosnan & Pat Fleming, U13: Noel Crowley, Brian Prembroke & Niall Clifford, U11: Den Jones, Louise Nelligan McCarthy and more to be appointed in due course.

Muckross Rowing Club ROWING IRELAND AGM & EGM: On Wednesday, February 17, Rowing Ireland held its reconvened AGM for 2020 remotely via Zoom to consider the Domestic Events Calendar and Irish Rowing Championships for 2021. The AGM was held together with an EGM to discuss certain changes to the rules of competitive rowing for 2021. The need for temporary rule changes arose due to the cancellation of Championship racing in 2020 as a result of COVID-19. This had knock-on effects for junior rowers, rower eligibility and grading generally.

The main outcome of the virtual meetings was approval from the clubs to delegate the arrangement of any competitive events in 2021 (if possible) to the Domestic Events Committee and Board of Rowing Ireland. All temporary rule change proposals were approved.

OUTLOOK 2021: Rowing Ireland continues to operate on the basis that Championship racing will proceed later in 2021 subject to public health restrictions. However, no event may be planned at this time and it is expected that a traditional Championships Regatta will not be possible. Several much smaller regattas may be required to accommodate different categories at different locations and dates. The timing of any Championship events is also likely to be later than the usual July fixture.

Castlemaine TIDY TOWNS AGM: Castlemaine Tidy Towns Committee will host its Annual General Meeting (AGM) for the year ahead on Tuesday, March 2 at 9pm.

In line with government restrictions, this year’s AGM can't take place in-person so will have to be held virtually on Zoom. As always, we would like as many people as possible to get involved in trying to improve our local area and to play a part in coming up with ideas/ projects that may benefit the whole community of Castlemaine. Your input would be most welcome and very much appreciated. If you wish to participate in the AGM and offer your assistance in any small way moving forward, please contact Helen Cronin on 086 8326094.
