Kia Ireland have announced a sustainability partnership with Clean Coasts to promote circular economy initiatives during Circular Week.

Clean Coasts, an initiative led by An Taisce, is a network of passionate volunteers committed to the protection of Ireland's beaches, seas, and marine life. Through volunteer-led initiatives and educational campaigns, Clean Coasts aims to inspire positive change in coastal and marine environments.

The announcement came during Circular Week, an international series of events and initiatives promoting the circular economy and sustainability, from October 23 to October 27.

Kia have made a resolute commitment to sustainability, placing it at the core of their business strategy with a long-term goal of Carbon Neutrality by 2045. As

Kia Ireland announces partnership with Clean Coasts

part of this initiative, Kia is dedicated to using recycled materials in vehicle production, including recycled ocean waste. Notably, Kia is a global supporter of The Ocean Cleanup, a non-profit organisation dedicated to developing and scaling technologies to combat plastic pollution in the world's oceans.

In a recent milestone, The Ocean Cleanup successfully retrieved 55 tons of plastic from the Pacific Ocean in a single operation. This plastic was then recycled and upcycled for use in the production of the fully electric New Kia EV9. This partnership underscores Clean Coasts' dedication to fostering sustainable practices and engaging communities

in coastal and marine conservation. Going forward, this collaboration will bolster the efforts of Clean Coasts volunteers as they continue to clean and protect Ireland's coastal environments. It will support beach clean-up initiatives and explore innovative ways to transform collected waste into new resources, aligning with Clean Coasts' vision for a cleaner, more sustainable coastline. The alarming statistic that 88% of marine life faces a threat to existence due to ocean plastic underscores the urgent need to address this environmental challenge. Clean Coasts, An Taisce, and Kia are determined to be part of the solution.

Cathal Kealey, Head of Marketing and PR at Kia Ireland said:

“By 2030 Kia will have 20% of all vehicle plastics coming from recycled materials. Our EV9 which will launch in Ireland in the coming weeks uses ten sustainable items in vehicle production, that have either originated from recycled plastic, or have been sourced from plant-based materials.

Going forward, these materials will be used in all future Kia models also. We are delighted to support Clean Coasts and to assist them in finding ways to reuse collected beach waste in line with our circular economy initiatives.”

Fassbender’s rare Irish race outing

Michael Fassbender finished in the top ten of his first event Irish race last weekend.

The Fossa man and Hollywood A-lister tackled last Sunday’s Ford Fiesta Six Hour Race at Mondello.

He shared a POB Motorsport with former Irish Formula One Grand Prix drivers David Kennedy and Tommy Byrne. Fassbender has been racing in the European Le Mans Series since 2021.

Driving a Proton Competition in the Le Mans 24-hour race feeder series he has scored podium finishes with his teammates Richard Lietz (Austria), Felipe Fernandez Laser (Germany), His last appearance at an Irish event was during the 2019 Rally of the Lakes driving a Ford Escort Mk2.

The Fiesta six-hour race is Ireland’s only endurance event and runs into darkness –again the only Irish motor race that takes place at night.

Rules of the event state the driver may not drive longer than 45 minutes continuously and must rest for 30 minutes between stints.

No driver can drive for longer than three hours out of the six and each team is assigned a marshal to ensure rules regarding driver and fuel stops are adhered to. Fassbender, Byrne and Kennedy finished ninth and completed 275 laps of the County Kildare track during their six hour stint.

Dacia celebrates ten years in Ireland

This year has been a highly memorable one for Dacia in Ireland with the brand celebrating 10 years and over 35,000 sales since launch.

2023 has been Dacia Ireland’s best ever year for sales, with almost 5,000 units done.

This success helped Dacia achieve a record market share of 7.6% in the European retail market (compared with 6.2% in 2021). For the sixth consecutive year (since 2017), the Dacia Sandero was the most sold car in the European retail market.

The Duster ranked second in 2022 and has also been the best-selling SUV to retail customers since 2018.

These two best-selling models have played a major role in Dacia reaching the eight million sales milestone.

Dacia and its customers, the brand introduced its new emblem – “Dacia

Link” – in 2021, which consists of a ‘D’ and ‘C’ connected in the middle. Further highlighting the brand’s rugged and adventurous nature, 40% of customers live in the countryside.

People who purchase the Dacia Spring – Europe’s most affordable new electric car – are the most rural (50%), the innovative all-electric hatchback being at home in the country as it is in the city.

Due for launch in Ireland in 2024, the all-electric Spring also plays a significant role in Dacia striving to address the concerns regarding future mobility.

New quad bike law comes into effect in November

The use of All-Terrain vehicles (ATV/Quad Bikes) is becoming more and more common on farms and forests and for many other sectors such as road works and airports, ATV’s/Quads are essential pieces of equipment.

However, there have been a significant number of fatalities involving quads and the potential for a serious injury or fatality when using a quad is high.

The main causes of serious or fatal injury associated with ATV/Quad Bikes are:

• Being thrown off during vehicle overturns or after loss of control;

• Collisions with structures, trees, poles, other vehicles etc.;

• Being trapped/asphyxiated under an overturned machine;

• Being drowned under a quad bike overturned in a water course;

• Pedestrians being struck or run over by an ATV/Quad Bikes.

Regulations governing the safe use of ATV/Quad Bikes in all workplaces will

come into effect on 20 November 2023. These regulations have two essential requirements of note:

• Training to be undertaken with a registered training provider to a QQI (Quality and Qualifications Ireland) standard or equivalent

• Use of helmets to a (generally) prescribed standard.

• Persons who undertake ATV/Quad Bike training must ensure that;

• The training provider used, is a regis-

tered training provider, registered with a registration body such as QQI, Lantra, City & Guilds or others such registered training bodies, and on successful completion of the training course, they receive a certificate of training that confirms that the course was successfully completed to the QQI standard 5N1752 or equivalent, and they retain and show when requested their training certificate as proof of training.

HELMETS

Helmet types suitable for ATV/Quad Bike operations, depending on the circumstances of use, are motorcycle helmets and specialist ATV helmets. All helmets should have a chinstrap and be capable of being used with suitable eye protection. The type of helmet chosen must be based on an assessment of the circumstances in which the ATV/Quad Bike will be used, e.g. the types of surface travelled over and anticipated speeds. The harder the surface and higher the speed the greater the degree of protection needed. Standard industrial hard hats, forestry helmets and cyclist helmets are not acceptable for any ATV/Quad Bike operations. Importantly, ‘All quad bike helmets should fit comfortably and securely, to ensure full protection.’
