to this month’s Home & Living. We are looking behind the hall door this month. Hallways and entrances are often forgotten in the clutter of everyday living but give first impressions guests have of your home.

We have some wonderful ideas for making this space inviting.

My favourites this month are the grandfather clock in our Notebook page based on the Swedish Mora clock. This will add a real wow factor to your hallway without taking up too much floor space. It is priced at €349 from Corcoran’s Furniture.

The beautiful green sofa in Get the Look, from Hal-Lou Furnishings, has to be seen to be believed. If you’re looking for the perfect painting for your hallway, Killarney Art Gallery has some wonderful choices.

Summertime, and the livin’ is easy…

Hallways After your front door, your hallway is the first part of your home that you see when you get home and it is the first interior you present to your guests.

Too often, hallways are relegated to becoming thoroughfares where coats, shoes, schoolbags and gym gear are dumped and if we finally get a chance to clear that clutter we don't put a lot of thought into their decoration.

Lighting the way FOR most of us, the hallway is a small space and so it can be difficult to add interest to it, as you are restricted with floor space.

Gardening Up front A FRONT garden can make your home more welcoming. Your front garden is the first thing visitors see. Yet, while many people lavish time and money on their back gardens, front gardens are often dull and unimaginative.

With a little planning and some expert advice, however, it's easy to create a front garden that is attractive, welcoming and easy to maintain.

If you're short of time, you want it to be low maintenance. It's true that the demands of low maintenance have been used as an excuse for all sorts of horrors, such as ugly concrete paving and thickets of dwarf conifers.

But if you spend time getting the structure and design right, you can have a beautiful and imaginatively planted front garden which really does require little weeding and minimal upkeep.

The trick is to get it right at the very start, if you're living in a town you want to use the front garden to park the car, but you also want it to look nice, with as little effort as possible.

'The layout has to be practical, but your front garden can also provide a welcome home each day from work. An attractive front garden can lift your spirits, give pleasing views from the house, increase the kerb appeal, and add to the property's value.

The width of paths and drives is critical; a path should be at least 1.2m wide, and a drive 3.5m.

If they aren't large enough it becomes frustrating, and a pit of a top gear moment every time you have to park your car.

Keeping it simple and adding some pots for colour (which can be changed seasonally) gives maximum effect for a little effort agapanthus is a great summer plant and the flowers have a great presence.
