But owning an extensive collection of sterling silver jewelry requires responsibility.

With that said, here’s a list of the do’s and don’t’s with sterling silver jewelry that you need to follow.

Do’s

Store them properly.

Place your sterling silver rings, earrings, necklaces, and bracelets in an anti-tarnish box which is lined on the inside with velvet fabric. If this isn’t available, wrap the pieces individually with soft lint-free cloths or fabric bags. Another option is to store them with a pack of silica gel to prevent moisture.

Polish and clean them gently.

It’s very easy to clean sterling silver jewelry. All you need is a silver polish (not metal polish) and a soft lint-free cloth. You can also use a soft-bristle toothbrush to gently clean in up-and-down motions the nooks and crannies of the piece.

Wear them often!

Stay stylish all the time and wear them every day! Wearing your silver pieces for longer periods of time reduces the risk of tarnish buildup as our skin’s natural oils clean the silver and maintains the silver’s shine.

Don’t’s

Don’t wear silver jewelry when swimming in a chlorinated pool.

Same goes for exercising, showering, doing household chores that require harsh detergents, and basically engaging in activities that will expose the silver to moisture for long. Doing so will increase the risk of tarnish.

Don’t wear silver jewelry over freshly applied perfume or lotion.

Allow perfume, lotion, and other beauty products to be fully absorbed by the skin before wearing sterling silver jewelry.

These products accelerate tarnishing, so it’s best to wear jewelry last.

Don’t scrub the pieces nor use ammonia and acetone to clean them.

Scrubbing the piece harshly will scratch it. Stick to the lint-free cloth and soft-bristle toothbrush. Harsh substances such as ammonia, acetone, and bleach will damage your sterling silver jewelry. If a silver polish is not available, make a paste of baking soda and water instead.
