Thank you for 11 Years of Passion, Advocacy and Leadership A Note from Dave DeRose – Board Chair As our Executive Director for 11 years, Shelly has led KIDS Center’s amazing staff in providing critical support to countless victims and families while also supporting education to our communities on child abuse prevention. Shelly has also been a passionate advocate in creating local, statewide, and national partnerships. Her efforts have improved programs, services, and resources for all families, especially those impacted by trauma. In my nearly 5 years on the Board of Directors, I have been inspired by the amazing work of KIDS Center under Shelly’s steadfast leadership. It has been a true privilege working alongside Shelly and witnessing the impact of KIDS Center. I want to thank Shelly for her invaluable contributions to KIDS Center. We’re excited to see what the future holds and look forward to honoring and perpetuating KIDS Center’s 25-year legacy. 2

The words “bad” and “hurt” can be confusing to children because not all abuse physically hurts or feels bad.

This is a question we hear repeatedly from frustrated and confused caregivers. There are many barriers that make it difficult for children to disclose abuse. Most children are abused by someone that is known, loved, and trusted to the child, their family, and/or community. It can be hard for children to think they will be believed when speaking up against someone so well-regarded. Kids sometimes have mixed feelings about getting a person in trouble; if they disclose, their caregiver, friend, coach could go to jail. There could also be aspects to the relationship with their abuser that the child views as positive such as attention or gifts. It’s possible their family could lose their community, home, or security. Sometimes the abuse has been so normalized that the child might not know it’s wrong until they
start spending time with other families and see different family dynamics or receive child abuse prevention education in schools. So how can adults create an environment where children will have the best opportunity to speak up? • Talk openly and honestly about body safety in order to model that no subject is too taboo or difficult to talk about. • Many children won’t disclose abuse to their parent, so it is important to talk to children about other options for safe people (teacher, counselor, parent, aunt) they could disclose to.
April 2019 brought the launch of National Children’s Alliance’s SHINE campaign. The ultimate goal of this national campaign is to change the dialogue surrounding child sexual abuse. For many adults, child sexual abuse is where the trauma started. Without a Child Advocacy Center like KIDS Center to help, many survivors do not find their voice until adulthood. At a time when disclosures of sexual abuse and harassment are becoming more mainstream, adult survivors occupy a unique space where there are opportunities to demonstrate that healing can happen, and that hope is possible. Join the campaign of supporting survivors and KIDS Center, letting children know that there is hope and that survivors of child sexual abuse can lead rich, fulfilling lives. Follow the campaign on
• Watching language is important. Teaching clear rules about body safety and letting children know that if ANYONE breaks those rules on their body (or a friend’s body) it’s necessary to speak up and to continue to speak up until help is given. The more openly adults can talk about child abuse in age-appropriate ways, the more comfortable children will be repeating the behavior they see in their trusted adults. Speak Up, Save a Child!

Sandy Cummings, Board Member Sandy is an award-winning documentary filmmaker and owner of TV Storyteller, a nonfiction video production company in Bend. She spent more than 20 years as a producer and then a senior producer for NBC News and Dateline NBC, where she earned numerous awards including three Emmy® Awards, an Edward R. Murrow Award, a Columbia DuPont Award and an Overseas Press Club Award. While working for NBC News in Los Angeles and New York, she covered major breaking national news stories including the terrorist attacks on 9/11, the Columbia space shuttle explosion, the mass shooting at Columbine High School, Michael Jackson’s molestation trial; investigative stories; medical stories and social justice issues such as Australia’s stolen generation. She also served as the Director of Communications for the High Desert Museum from 2014-2018. She currently serves on the board of directors of Art in Public Places and is a volunteer wish granter for Make-A-Wish. Sandy and her husband Bruce moved to Bend in 2006 when Bruce retired from his job as a senior producer of NBC Nightly News. In their free time, they enjoy hiking, traveling, and woodworking.
Jay Lyons, Board Member Jay is a Partner and Principal Broker at Compass Commercial Real Estate Services; a commercial real estate brokerage, property management and construction services firm located in Bend, OR. Jay is originally Wisconsin, but has lived across the country including stops in Pennsylvania, Colorado and California. In addition to the KIDS Center board, Jay also serves on the boards for the Bend Chamber of Commerce and the Mt. Bachelor Rotary Club. Jay, his wife Katie their 3-year old daughter Riley and their 1-year old daughter Saylor currently live in Bend, OR.
Roberto Riquelme, Board Member Roberto Riquelme graduated from ITESO Guadalajara Mexico with a degree in Architecture. He currently works for Les Schwab Tire Centers as a Construction Project Manager.
Roberto is an outdoor enthusiast and enjoys Central Oregon’s mountain bike riding in the summer and snowboarding in the winter. Central Oregon became home for Roberto beginning with family vacations to the area in the late 1970s. Becoming involved in improving this community is the main reason he participates enthusiastically in local events and is committed to contributing his time and effort to KIDS Center.
Kaitlin O’Donnell, Bi-lingual Prevention Family Support Specialist Kaitlin O’Donnell moved to Bend, OR from Central California approximately one year ago, where she worked with teen girls to implement after-school and in-class education enrichment programs to help identify, remove, and prevent barriers to students’ academic, career, and personal development. Kaitlin is well-versed in the Spanish language and has spent a significant amount of time working in the Dominican Republic, assisting women in rural areas with finding stable employment opportunities and coordinating a diverse range of community development, resources, and educational services for a U.S.-based nonprofit. Most recently, she has worked as a wilderness therapy instructor through Evoke Therapy Programs in Bend, providing guidance and support to teens, young adults, and their families.
Annie Adams, Front Desk & Volunteer Coordinator Annie comes to KIDS Center with a diverse background that will lend itself well to the multi-faceted role she’s taking on. For the past 5 years she has held various positions within 7 Peaks School, ranging from Teaching Assistant to Assistant to the Head of School. Previously, she has been an EMT and Emergency Room technician amongst other interesting and challenging roles. She is also a Professional Lifestyle Photographer (even volunteering her skills at Cork and Barrel in years past). She is a very proud mom of 3, and knows and loves our community.

The Pine Tavern Restaurant & Bar will host their 4th annual PT84 Beerfest Invitational on October 5, 2019 at 4:30pm. Central Oregon breweries will be competing to be Pine Tavern’s next signature “PT83” Beer. The aim of the competition is to select a winning beer and brewery and celebrate the craft beer industry in Bend! Proceeds from this event benefits KIDS Center.
