From KIDS Center’s Executive Director While 2020 has been an incredibly challenging year for KIDS Center, our staff and board have shown tremendous resilience and commitment throughout the many unpredictable moments we have experienced. As we near the end of the year and reflect on the past several months, we remain fiercely dedicated to evaluating, treating and preventing child abuse in our Central Oregon community.

Like many organizations, we have had to rethink our most basic operations, bolster our technology resources on the fly, conduct our major fundraisers like Cork & Barrel in brand-new, untested ways, and adjust to uncertain economic conditions brought on by the cumulative impact of COVID-19. We have had to increase safety protocols while thoughtfully maintaining the warm and welcoming feeling we provide to children and families who walk through our doors. We have had to quickly pivot to support families whose lives have been impacted by massive additional stressors which would not have been an issue for them just a few months ago. Through it all, our team has done one very important thing, and that is to keep showing up.

From the days of total lockdown in March and April, to our current

level of operations, which is as close to full capacity as possible given state health guidelines, KIDS Center’s team, alongside our community partners, has continued to do its best to serve children and families whose lives have been impacted by abuse.

As we now look to the future, we are bolstered by the fortitude and professionalism of our talented staff team, the leadership of our Board of Directors, the strong relationships we maintain with our community partners, and the continued support from our community. We know that child abuse remains a critical issue, and as we move forward into the new year, the needs for our services will only grow. KIDS Center stands ready to meet those needs. We will keep showing up. On behalf of our staff, board and advisory council members, thank you to our wonderful community for your support.

Resilience In the Midst of a Pandemic As KIDS Center began the transition into a new normal last spring, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, our existing hopes of offering telemental health services quickly became a reality.

With this shift came insight to the myriad of differences between inperson and virtual therapy. It has been inspiring to see our clients utilize this new medium to make commitments to their growth as many of them joined teletherapy alongside us. Many new clients also began services and forged a virtual therapeutic connection without any in-person foundation.

Together, we collectively learned how to navigate the technology and the distance.

Our clients have demonstrated incredible resilience during this

very challenging time. COVID-19 has uprooted their communities, families, coping strategies, self-care, and ultimately their human connection. It has brought financial and emotional hardships, confusion, scarcity and fear. Our clients often experience ongoing threats to normal growth and development, and their lives have been disrupted by trauma.

Their adverse experiences could have contributed to increased vulnerability to the effects of COVID-19. KIDS Center therapists were also concerned their current and future clients would not feel able to access therapeutic support. Fortunately, telemental health has enabled many clients to continue to seek services and begin or progress along their healing journey.

As we head into the latter part of the year and look back at the past few months, we can see how our clients have proven to be remarkably strong, continuing to show up with a willingness to confront their trauma, even while feeling the changes wrought by the pandemic. Through internet video or phone sessions, KIDS Center has been there to provide the essential human connection, attunement and consistency necessary for our clients to feel safe. KIDS Center therapists and staff feel honored and thankful to remain present and able to serve our clients during this time. These remarkable survivors continue to inspire us with their strength and hope. ~ KIDS Center Therapy Team

DARKNESS TO LIGHT’S STEWARDS OF CHILDREN® is a 3-hour training that provides participants with 5 steps to better protect children from sexual abuse.

The training offers adults tools for recognizing the signs of sexual abuse, responding to suspicions, and gives simple ways to minimize opportunities for abuse in organizations and in our community.

LET’S TALK ABOUT IT is a 2-hour training designed to provide parents and caregivers, with children birth to 12 years old, information about the difference between healthy, developmentally appropriate body exploration, and inappropriate and unsafe behavior that can cause harm to self and others.

SAFETYNET: SMART CYBER CHOICES® is a 2-hour training that teaches how technology can be used in a safe, positive, and ethical manner while providing participants with the tools needed to safely manage online lives for both adults and children.* Visit kidscenter.org to learn more or to sign up for a training.

Welcome New Board and Staff CORY DARLING, Board Member Cory Darling is currently the chief of police for the Sunriver Police Department. He has over 30 years of law enforcement service.

He has served with the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office and Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office as a Marine Patrol Deputy, an officer with the Sunriver Department of Public Safety, a Trooper with the Washington State Patrol and has held the positions of Officer, Detective, Sergeant, Lieutenant and Captain with the City of Bend Police Department. Cory has also served in numerous special assignments throughout his career.

Cory is married to Molly Darling, who is a manager with Deschutes County Behavioral Health. He is the proud father to a 31-year-old daughter, a 19-year-old stepdaughter and a 14-year-old stepson.

Other members of the family include a high energy Labradoodle named “Georgie”, a nervous diabetic Chihuahua named “Kona” and an over fed potbellied pig named “Rumple Pig Skin”.

LOIS VALLERGA, Board Member A semi-retired leadership and organizational development consultant, Lois formerly was with St Charles for almost thirty years in both clinical and executive capacities. Originally from St Louis, she is a graduate of the University of Missouri-Columbia. During forty years in Bend it’s been her privilege to serve on multiple nonprofit boards and her former club, the Bend Rotary, was integral to making the KIDS Center a reality back in the early 1990s. Lois and husband Paul, former teacher and coach at MVHS where their son Taylor now does the same, share their home with Gus and Auggie, two very large Bernese Mountain Dogs.

MORGAN HIRSCH, Staff Member, KIDS Center Therapist In January 2020, Morgan Hirsch joined our KIDS Center Team as a full-time therapist. Morgan received her M.S. in Clinical Mental Health from OSU Cascades and was an intern with Saving Grace for a year and a half. She is also trained in Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT). Morgan is dedicated to serving clients living in rural Crook and Jefferson Counties. This added resource will greatly enhance our ability to serve our rural clients in their home communities. Fun Fact -- Morgan has 10 years of teaching experience which began in Nigeria and is fluent in French!
