Matt Wake (AKA: LOU’S KID) has done everything from organize motorcycle rides, design artwork, Barista, and roast coffee for us. He has been huge behind the scenes and deserves so much more than just a shout out!

Hey Everybody!

My name is Matt Wake, I am 23, and I am a new tattoo aritst.

Have you ever been soul-tired?

I have! the 9-5 grind of making money at a pizza shop was wearing me thin as the pay barely helped me break even. I wanted to be creative and do something more, but Didn’t know where to start.

me borrow some of his old tattoo gear. I tattooed my leg and afterwards, he came over and said, “Dude, that’s really good.”

I did not expect to be pursuing this career path… mainly becasue I grew up in the midwest, and my mom does not like tattoos. Haha.

Her name is LouAnn, so I claimed “Lou’s Kid” as my alias. Funniy enough, she loves it. She was And then, the forest fires diagnosed with breast cancer happened in Oregon... this past year, so I dedicate all my art to her. Through this enI was cooped up in my brothdeavor my hope is that in some er’s apartment to try avoid the way, my art would reflect the smoke and had some time to connections between my childthink about things. That’s when hood, reality, & the way my mom I decided I was going to pursue being a tattoo artist. As soon as prepared me for it. I owe her alot and I am grateful for her love the fires passed, I went to Best and support.

It was a hot August weekend when

Olivia pulled up TO legion moto co on their 2008 Dyna Lowrider for some coffee. I had never met them before and little did I know, they had just ridden all the way across the country and back.

After 3 months of riding through the great landscapes from coast to coast and back again, Olivia made some time to tell the tale of their epic adventure. Through snow, heat and lots of rain, memories were made and heck was raised.

In the following pages Olivia shares a bit of their tale. So snag a cup of coffee, take a breath, and enjoy another story told of an epic motorcycle adventure. Olivia Jane, thanks for taking the time to be a part of this Slow Mag! You are the salt of the earth. So glad we met!

- Sa m Wake So tell us about this coast to coast trip!

Why did you do it?!

Well, one of my buddies and I spent the whole pandemic riding, and this past winter we got to discussing how sick it would be to ride across the country. It was all theory at first and then we were like, “We should do that!” So we did!

We took ourselves seriously

and on May 15th, we loaded up our bikes and took off from Portland down the ye’ old 101 South, all the way across the bottom of the country, to the East Coast, and back.

We loosely planned it. We bought ‘America the beautiful national Park passes’ and tried to hit as many as we possibly could. We followed the coast down to Redding, CA. and stayed near this tiny weird town. I can’t remember what it was called. Due to the Pandemic all the campsites were closed so We pulled off on a powerline access road to find a place to camp. A good rule of thumb while camping is to stand there for 20-3omin to see if people come around, if there is wildlife, or if cops come by.

We waited forever and once it seemed good we unclipped our bags and ironically at that ...

exact moment 4 highway patrolmen came barreling down the road across from us.

We just acted as natural as one can while unloading a motorcycle and luckily, they never saw us.

How did your bike do?

When I departed Portland the tacometer said that it had 40,000 miles on it already, and it made it! It had no masters no breakdowns. I did run into wierd injector grounding issues, but that was because the This was kind of the rhythm. We would roll moment we hit texas, we were riding in rain. into campsites at night and then pack up other than that, it did great. It rained the before the sun rose. We used majority of the trip. Being from Portland, I freecampsites.org and it worked great. didn’t expect that. When I got home my bike Every now and then though, it would tell had 55,000 miles on it, so I did about 15,000 us about a free camp site but end up being a miles total. walgreens parking lot. haha What were some of the best We camped a lot but we also were able to spots you hit? catch up with homies along the way who let Doing the Grand Canyon, Zion, Horseshoe us crash with them for a few days, which Bend, Sedona, and, Joshua tree back to back was good so we could get some rest.

What were some of the best spots you hit?

Doing the Grand Canyon, Zion, Horseshoe Bend, Sedona, and, Joshua tree back to back was insane. I had a gopro mounted on my helmet and after those three days I had so much footy, I didn’t use it for the rest of the trip. It had an hour and a half of footage. At night, I like to lay in my tent, edit and get it out. I hate backlogged content and I didn’t want it to haunt me the rest of the trip., which actually helped me be present.

I had never been to Texas before and it was gorgeous and green. It was really rainy so everything was lush. We ripped around the gulf through New orleans to Florida.

Florida was way cooler than I expected it to be. we were going to go the to the keys but we opted out so that we didn’t have to spend 14 hours on one road. Also, Florida is suppsebly known as the sunshine state but I am going on record: that’s a farse, it is not real, because it rained the whole time.

Tennessee and Alabama were beautiful, so Upstate New York blew me away. It was so green and lush. cool, so green, with spooky cemeteries everywhere. There was historical landmarks all over the place. New yor city had the worst roads ever. The pot holes were Gnarly and people on electric scooters were wild.

I am not really drawn to big cities but everywhere I thought I wasn’t gonna like, I ended up really loving. we were going to go the to the keys but we opted out so that we didn’t have to spend 14 hours on one road. Chicago and Milwaukie were amazing. I saw the harley museum and Ironically, showed up to it on a bike night that they do once a month. Grave digger was there and I parked my bike right next to it! South Dakota was gorgeous.

What did you learn on this trip? how did you grow?

No matter how solid of a plan you think you have, it never goes according to plan and that’s ok. My trip kind of went in a very not planned way. My buddy and I got split up and on the way back I did the whole thing by myself. That’s when it actually started for me.

I had to be more self-relient. It pushed me to be more social. I was constantly reminded how crazy what I was doing was. I listened to a lot of books on tape. I listened to a lot of mini meditations and helmet therapy. I came back feeling like a brand new person.

The intent of the trip was to find the next thing for me. After 11 years in Portland, I was rteady to see what else was out there. The roads were clear because of the pandemic and I really cherished meeting new people and connecting with others. In Zion, I met a dude on a gold Wing who was wearing shorts and crocs, sporting his GW cupholders. It was his dad’s bike and he had flown across the country because his father had just passed and was riding it back. Like me, he was also on this sick soul searching journey on the cadillac of motorcycles.

DID YOU HAVE TO QUIT YOUR JOB? I am a bartender at Eastside and I asked my manager If I could take three months off to ride a motorcycle around the country. She thought it was really cool, but also told me people were going to have to cover my shifts which made me feel not so hot. But, then they had to do a big schedule shift anyways and It made for the perfect time for me to step away for a season.

DID YOU get your job back?

I did! Which was great because by the end of the trip I was like, “I need Money!”

So, you are moving to new york.

Is that because of this trip?

Yeah! Definitely. The opportunity I was presented with would not have happened if I hadnt taken this trip. On the journey, I stayed for a month in new york and my friends out there got an opportunity that they actually invited me to be a part of: swing a hammer and work.

What was your first motrocycle?

Honda Trail 70. I was 7 years old and I was really into dirt bikes. First road bike was a 1981 GS 550 Suzuki.

What advice would you give people who want to start riding, but don’t know where to start?

Just do it. It’s the most liberating thing.

There is nothing more liberating than riding a motorcycle. In the elements, on a little motorized chair, blasting through the world. Don’t sit around and say “I wish” because, you can. It’s not if you crash, it’s when. Don’t ride scared.

What was your biggest takeaway from this epic journey?

THE ROAD PROVIDES.Even in hard

times, people pull through for you. Bunk a Biker. Couch surfing for Bikers. Everyone I stayed with was insanely hospitable. Complete strangers would invite us into their house and cook us dinner.

It is our belief, that like most things, coffee rewards craft and perfection.

The problem is, we live in a fast paced culture that tends to reward short cuts and accesibility.

DID YOU KNOW IT TAKE a coffee tree to yiel fruit.

You can roll through a Starbucks on your way to something else, and in 5 minutes have a drink made for you, without having to put any thought into where the coffee came from. You don’t have to think about how long it took the earth to yield the coffee in your cup, or ponder how many hands touched it before it ended up brewed and in your mug, ready to give you your fast-paced stimulant.

So, in this article we want to bring you into loop on a few coffee facts that might help you better understand all that goes into that delicious cup of cofffee you start your day with.

And maybe as we slow down together, we can grow to not only appreciate our coffee more, but also discover gratitude for the precious lives we get to live.

Did you know that after a coffee tree is planted, it takes up to 5 years for it to be able to yield a fruit that is harvest ready?

Coffee is actually the seeds of coffee trees.

These small trees produce a cherry-like fruit, containing seeds which you know as coffee beans. Coffee plants take 3-5 years to grow into being a tree that can reach full fruit production. annual cherry maturation takes approximately 9 months.

Farmers and their families labor for years to cultivate healthy sustainable farms that yield what lands in your cup.

And this is simply the beginng.

Coffee is technically made three different times.

1. It is farmed 2. It is Roasted 3. It is brewed

Each Part of the process is extremely important.

From farm to cup, we all playan important part. being highlyintentional about our role, goes a long way in producuing sustainabilityfor the farms, farmers, roasteries, and markets.

Dissapointment sucks.

It’s like a black hole.

It zaps all the gusto from the heart.

If you’re anything like me, you probaly got some big dreams for yourself.

And....

If you’re anyting like me you probably have experienced some failure in the pursuit of those dreams.

“Dream big! But remember, dreams without goals lead to endless dissapointments.”

- Denzel Washington two things come to mind... #1 - Failure is a part of the process of life. however, in today’s tech savy, instant gratification culture, there aren’t a lot of cultural outlets effective in helping us deal with our grief. In this win-win-win society, defeat is seen as an affliction when in reality, it may be the best teacher we have. #2 - you may be able to change the script of your current dissapointment if you set reachable goals that get you a step closer to your dreams.
