A stalwart champion of KidsAbility, Peter gave generously of his �me and talents to the organiza�on for nearly six decades. In 1995, when we opened our Waterloo loca�on, Peter created three beau�ful hand-painted murals in our lobby and pavilion. These murals have been enjoyed by genera�ons of children and their families. From 1999 to 2010, Peter donated original pain�ngs to KidsAbility to raise awareness as part of our Kids Can’t Wait campaign. In fact, his pain�ngs were used to help determine the annual theme of this ini�a�ve and showcased our children enjoying their lives to the fullest. In 2010, Peter and his wife Marilyn established an endowment fund to ensure that future genera�ons of children and youth would receive the supports they needed to be successful. Peter passed away on August 28, 2017, his legacy will live on.

Message from Leadership There is a certain magic in beginnings! As we started our new fiscal year last April, we had the opportunity to reflect on our own beginnings here at KidsAbility as we celebrated 60 Years of Poten�al Realized. Throughout 2017, we celebrated the countless success stories made possible thanks to the incredible vision and founda�onal support of our local Rotary clubs. Together, we innovated, broke down barriers and made countless firsts possible serving a record 7,975 children and youth this past year. Our volunteers con�nue to amaze and inspire through their dona�on of �me, talents and treasures. Last year, over 650 volunteers directly impacted the lives of our children, youth and families in profound ways. Whether it was in the classroom, on the Boards, driving children to appointments, at events, on commi�ees and more—together, we made firsts possible. Surrounded by our families, staff, donors and community partners, we cut the ribbon on our new Cambridge Hub as we celebrated seamless, barrier-free services in the Cambridge community. Recognizing the immense benefits of hubs, in June, we will amalgamate services again under one roof with the opening of our Guelph Hub made possible through the generosity of our community. Our donors supported projects including our Cambridge and Guelph Hubs, but their generosity went even further allowing KidsAbility to implement new programs, pursue innova�on and provide
therapy and support to over 1,000 addi�onal children and youth. Dona�ons remain cri�cally important, for as much as we have to celebrate, there are significant challenges ahead of us that we must face together. Demand con�nues to exceed the resources available. Referrals con�nue to rise as does the cost to provide therapy. With no new investments to base funding from provincial government, the wai�ng list has reached a 10-year high. Over 1,300 children and youth and their families are currently wai�ng—an over 40% increase from the year prior. No child should have to wait to realize their full poten�al. In response to this, the Founda�on will once again turn to our generous community to help address this gap. These funds are essen�al to suppor�ng the work of KidsAbility. We will con�nue to advocate on behalf of our families and look forward to working with provincial funders to ensure that our needs are counted and children, youth and families are top of mind for the Ontario government.
Rehabilita�on Services (formerly known as School Health Support Services) – an exci�ng opportunity to plan for a more integrated service experience for families. We will con�nue to implement innova�ve solu�ons to address our wait lists across programs to get services to families as soon as possible. By working with our community partners, we will leverage our strengths and share our exper�se and knowledge to build our community’s collec�ve capacity to be�er support every child, youth and family. We will achieve this and more thanks to our dedicated and professional staff of 238 who bring their best everyday ensuring that our families are supported and our children and youth are equipped with the skills to realize goals important to them at home, at school and in the community. Your support as a donor, volunteer, funder, staff member or community partner helps KidsAbility to build up each child, youth and family with the support and the confidence to achieve their own successes.
Despite these challenges, we have many exci�ng plans and opportuni�es ahead of us this year—ones that we will realize together. During this fiscal year, KidsAbility will assume responsibility for School Based

Highlights from the Year April 2017
August 2017
KidsAbility hosted “Students with Special Needs: High School to Higher Learning” forum in partnership with Wilfrid Laurier University and Sco�abank, bringing together post-secondary ins�tu�ons, families, alumni and prospec�ve students to break down barriers to higher learning. Volunteers from KidsAbility provided a “hug in a bowl” through their support of their 6th Annual Soup Sisters night in support of local shelters for women and children.
Kidspark invited KidsAbility to provide its first-ever sensory-friendly area for children, youth and adults. This annual event held by the City of Kitchener gave families a free, fun-filled day of ac�vi�es and entertainment. Through KidsAbility’s support of Kidspark, we are able to share our exper�se and help make this community event inclusive and welcoming of all children, youth and families.
THE ROTARY CLASSIC SUPERHERO RUN 60 Years of Poten�al Realized was celebrated throughout the community with an art show, events and celebra�on at Whistle Bear. It was also marked with a tree plan�ng dedica�on to commemorate the over 60,000 children and youth with special needs who have been given the skills and support that they need to realize their poten�al. Through a government grant of $41,000, KidsAbility hired 10 summer students. The students provided much-needed addi�onal resources and in return received paid, meaningful on-the-job experience.
DISNEY DREAMLIFT
May 2017 A team of 11 KidsAbility staff volunteered their �me to make Disney magic possible for 27 excited KidsAbility clients. The children and staff enjoyed an unforge�able one-day trip to Walt Disney World through DreamLi�. McDonald’s annual McHappy Day ini�a�ve brought in nearly $20,000 for KidsAbility.
July 2017 iCan Bike helped 40 children and youth with special needs between the ages of 8 to 18 work towards achieving a lifelong goal of riding a bike independently for the first �me. Firefly Therapy Services kicked off a busy summer packed full of camps and programs like Firefly Friends and Jr. Robo�cs.

KidsAbility began to open the Waterloo site once per month on a Saturday to increase the accessibility of KidsAbility’s programs and services for clients and families. Doors Open Waterloo Region at KidsAbility welcomed over 100 people to tour our Waterloo site and learn about the services available in our community. All staff received Solu�on-Focused Coaching training through interac�ve workshops to enhance our team’s skills and knowledge to be�er serve our families, children and youth. Sports Experience Day in Cambridge in partnership with the City of Cambridge gave children, youth and siblings the chance to try out new ac�vi�es including fitness, drumming, music and ska�ng! Play Who You Are celebrated 10 years of partnership between KidsAbility and Interna�onal Ins�tute for Cri�cal Studies in Improvisa�on (IICSI) to provide children in Guelph opportuni�es to experience musical improvisa�on.
The Rotary Classic Superhero Run in Cambridge brought out supporters in droves and raised more than $36,000.
10th Annual Rotary Fun Day transformed KidsAbility’s Waterloo site into a carnival for a day. Hosted by Kitchener-Waterloo Rotary Clubs, families enjoyed pony rides, food, games and more!

TREE PLANTING
The transi�on of the School Health Support Services’ contracts began shi�ing from Local Health Integra�on Networks to children’s treatment centres across the province.
Grand opening celebra�on of KidsAbility’s Cambridge Hub brought together our early years, school and au�sm teams, community partners, donors, families, and dignitaries, as we cut the ribbon on our newest site.
Innova�ve partnership with Kitchener Public Library, KwartzLab and ATS reduced barriers for clients and families through custom-designed and 3-D printed keyguards. Wait �me for families was reduced from months to minutes and the cost from $300 to just $2.
KidsAbility launched its new Drum Club in Cambridge, Waterloo and Guelph for children, youth and their siblings with guest percussionist Richard Burrows. This pilot program was made possible through funding from the Ontario Arts Council.
10th Annual Oh Christmas Free provided respite to families thanks to our staff, donors, Rotarians and friends who volunteered their �me to spend the morning with KidsAbility’s children and their siblings.

Firefly Therapy Services offered a Sensory-Friendly Halloween. Held on October 30, this provided an opportunity for children to experience trick or trea�ng in a safe and familiar environment and enjoy candy, costumes, games and more.
November 2017 Green Team rolled out challenges and informa�on to help staff become more environmental conscious as we worked towards reducing our carbon footprint.

January 2018 KidsAbility unveiled its new logo to reflect the older and more diverse children, youth and families that we serve. Family Compass Waterloo Region and Here4Kids in Guelph-Wellington launched. KidsAbility partnered in both ini�a�ves to help families find the right help for their children.
February 2018 Together We Chill brought staff together for an a�ernoon of fun as teams built structures out of items that were then donated to local shelters and organiza�ons. Family REC (Relax, Enjoy and Connect) event was hosted by KidsAbility’s Au�sm Program staff who volunteered their �me to give families a chance to connect in a safe and supported environment. Behaviour Consults began to provide a mul�-disciplinary approach to support KidsAbility teams with advice, resource development, strategies and/or recommenda�ons for working with clients with behaviour challenges.

An Eventful Year at KidsAbility Kids Can’t Wait Radiothon The Kids Can’t Wait Radiothon proved to be a galvanizing force in the community once again, as people rallied to raise funds for children and youth with special needs. With the support of CHYM 96.7, Country 106.7, 570 News and Rogers tv we raised $167,515. Tim Hortons Smile Cookie Campaign On November 3, 2017, smiles were the order of the day at Tim Hortons as KidsAbility was presented with a cheque for $54,029.50. We’d like to thank local Tim Hortons owners, their staff, volunteers and customers for bringing a smile to the faces of children and youth with special needs.
DENSO A leading supplier of advanced automo�ve technology, systems and components, DENSO has supported KidsAbility through varous ini�a�ves: sponsorship of the Guelph Superhero Run, a $30,000 dona�on to the Guelph Hub, internal fundraising events with staff and even payroll deduc�ons.
Stantec Driven by their promise to design with community in mind, Stantec donated $5,000 to KidsAbility’s new Guelph Hub. In addi�on, the company par�cipates in the annual Plasma Car Races and employees volunteer at Oh Christmas Free (where parents are given a respite while their children enjoy a morning of ac�vi�es at KidsAbility).
Guelph Superhero Run The Superhero Run for KidsAbility in Guelph was a runaway hit, as families united to raise money for children and youth with special needs. Par�cipants dressed up as their favourite superheroes and ran, walked, or wheeled their way to take part in the one kilometre fun run or the five kilometre �med event. In total, more than $70,000 was raised in by our local heroes.

Volkswagen Waterloo Volkswagen Waterloo has gained renown for being a “Posi�vely Different” company. Part of this means extending their support to the community—including KidsAbility. Volkswagen Waterloo are proud monthly donors who also par�cipate in the Plasma Car Races (where they were the top fundraisers for 2017). Over an eight-year period, the company has donated more than $63,000 to KidsAbility.
Toyota Motor Manufacturing Canada A longstanding champion of KidsAbility, Toyota con�nues to support KidsAbility through dona�ons to the Cambridge Hub, the Kids Can’t Wait Radiothon and other programs over the years.
Grainharvest A local ar�san bakery, Grainharvest Breadhouse donates 10 cents per pretzel to KidsAbility. To date, they’ve raised $35,216 to support children and youth with special needs.
Miijidaa, Borealis and The Wooly Pub Part of the Neighbourhood Group of Companies, these three restaurants raised over $6,000 last year through summer pa�o par�es, Kids Meal promo�ons (where funds from each meal were donated to KidsAbility) and company Christmas party proceeds. In addi�on, they provide free food at the Guelph Superhero Run and hosted the Guelph Rise and Shine Breakfast for local community leaders.

Sugar Plum Tea The annual Sugar Plum Tea proved to be a huge success, raising approximately $53,000 for children and youth with special needs. This premier social event was held at Langdon Hall, a luxurious Relais & Châteaux property acclaimed for its cuisine. A�endees enjoyed an a�ernoon of elegant high tea and sophis�ca�on while suppor�ng KidsAbility.
Lucie’s Lemonade Stand Can one young girl make a difference in the lives of children and youth with special needs? Of course! Take Lucie, who decided to raise money for KidsAbility by running a lemonade stand. With some help from friends and family – and a very suppor�ve community – this young philanthropist brought in $4,000 for our organiza�on!
Rotary Club of Kitchener Car Draw Proud supporters of KidsAbility, the Rotary Club of Kitchener hosted its annual car draw once again this past year. From July to November, Rotarians sold �ckets with proceeds benefi�ng KidsAbility. Since 1998 the Rotary Club of Kitchener has raised over $985,000 for KidsAbility.

The Susan McCaw KidsAbility Spirit Award In 2014, KidsAbility lost a beloved friend and colleague _ Susan McCaw. In memory of Susan and the posi�ve impact that she had in the lives of so many staff, clients and families, The Susan McCaw KidsAbility Spirit Award was established. This year’s recipient was Lisa Peterson. Lisa is an Au�sm Supervisor with our Kitchener team. She is described by her peers as compassionate, caring and the epitome of selflessness _ dedica�ng her life to the children, parents and staff at KidsAbility. With a smile on her face and a kind demeanor, Lisa is a great problem solver making her a “go-to” person for families and staff when they have challenges or need to talk. She con�nuously tries to find new ways to enhance programs for children and families so they can be successful. Last year, she became a Board Cer�fied Behaviour Analyst a�er ge�ng her Masters in Applied Behavioural Analysis - new-found knowledge that she brings to work every day. She is such a strong supervisor and this shows in the strong teams that she has been able to develop, leading by example and demonstra�ng what true “team spirit” is. Congratula�ons, Lisa! Thank you for your spirit, enthusiasm and dedica�on to suppor�ng our children, youth and families to achieve firsts important to them.
