The CEO & Chair Reviewing the achievements of the past year reminds us of what an exciting and busy year it has been! We were pleased to assist 5,840 children to reach their potential. Our staff of 191, along with the help of 471 volunteers have all played a part in making miracles happen each and every day! From Guelph to Fergus, Kitchener to Cambridge and in Waterloo, we have helped to make a difference for children and youth with special needs and their families. Here are just a few of the accomplishments of this past year: • The Board of Directors released Strategic Plan 2020: Base Camp 2016 to guide our work; • KidsAbility introduced and supported a new CEO; • We celebrated the opening of our new Centre for Autism in Kitchener; • The investment of new funds by the Ontario Government allowed us to implement the SPARK! Program; • Management and union employees reached an agreement to guide us to December 2014; • Continuous Quality Improvement Plans have been launched across the entire organization; • As a member of OACRS, KidsAbility participated in the advancement of key priorities and projects with the Ministry of Children and Youth Services; • Through our work in the development of networks and knowledge exchange, KidsAbility has continued to advance continuous learning; • KidsAbility has embraced internal culture with the launch of the “Together We Rock” communication initiative; • We have continued to benefit from the outstanding financial support of our Foundation. With their help we can supplement our therapy staff and supports to benefit even more children. Message from
The Executive Director & Chair Thanks to a generous community, this past year, we were able to provide over $1.5 million to support KidsAbility’s mission of empowering children and youth with special needs in Waterloo Region and Wellington County. These funds have enabled KidsAbility to provide life-changing therapy, empowering hundreds of additional children and youth to realize their potential. With your support each and every day our children are achieving their goals, whether it is learning to ride a bike through the iCan Bike Program or taking their first steps without a walker. We extend our gratitude to the many groups and individuals who held events in support of KidsAbility this past year. This includes our friends at Rogers Kitchener Radio Group who have backed our Kids Can’t Wait Radiothon since 2006. We are also thankful for the dedicated support of Scotiabank and their employees in Waterloo Region and Guelph-Wellington. We continue to be indebted to our local Rotary Clubs who founded KidsAbility 57 years ago and have stood by us ever since. The Foundation Board believes in accountability to our donors and the funds entrusted to us. This past year we pursued and achieved accreditation with Imagine Canada’s Standards Program. This national Standards Program offers accreditation to charities and non-profits that can demonstrate excellence in board governance, financial accountability and transparency, fundraising, staff management and volunteer involvement. Our successes this past year would not have been possible without the assistance of our dedicated volunteers. Thank you to all of our volunteers for your passion and for giving so selflessly of your time. On behalf of the Foundation Board, our staff, the children and their families, we thank each and every one of you for investing in our children. Together, we are making a difference!

When Bentley was four months old, his mom, Melissa, knew something wasn’t “right” with his legs. She already had an older son who was almost two, and Bentley had a twin brother. When Bentley and his twin were side by side, the physical differences became quite apparent. At eight months old, he was referred to KidsAbility. Bentley had weekly therapy sessions and his twin brother always joined him! When Bentley turned one, he was diagnosed with cerebral palsy, which meant there was no limit to what he could learn to do, but also no guarantee that he would reach any physical milestones. With months of therapy at KidsAbility, he learned to sit, crawl, pull to stand, cruise furniture, climb stairs and walk with a walker. Bentley has a smile that can light up any room and this is the most rewarding thing to see when he has completed a task with success. His feeling of pride and accomplishment reminds me each time of why I love being a physiotherapist and why I love working with children. There is nothing better then hearing him say “look Amy” or “watch me Amy” or being greeted with a huge hug. It is true joy to see him running in his walker down the hallway after his brothers or across the playground with his friends at childcare to say hello to me. He has an amazing family that has been supportive and dedicated in helping him to continuously achieve his full potential while also giving back to KidsAbility in many ways. His motivation, drive and determination is inspiring and is why each session with Bentley is filled with laughter, play and a pinch of hard work. Having the opportunity to work with children like Bentley has made me a better physiotherapist and a better person. I am truly honoured to get the opportunity to play everyday.

We recognize and celebrate the following colleagues for their continued years of service at KidsAbility. Combined, it is a whopping 350 years!
For over 50 years, ECE had been an integral part of the lives of the children we serve at KidsAbility. In January the funding for the Resource Consultants moved to KW Habilitation and while KidsAbility gained kinesiology, we had to bid farewell to our talented resource consultants.
We thank each and every one of them for the passion, talent and innovation that they invest in helping to empower our children to realize their full potential!

To mark the impact of ECE in the lives of our children, a special tree-planting dedication service was held. Over time and through the seasons we will watch this tree grow and flourish and be reminded of the children who were nurtured over the years through ECE.
Susan’s Legacy
On March 20, our KidsAbility family lost a dear friend and colleague, Susan McCaw, after a battle with cancer that was fought with eternal optimism and a smile. Susan was an Occupational Therapist at KidsAbility’s Waterloo site working with our youngest clients, six and under. She touched the lives of thousands of children and families over her more than 25-year journey with KidsAbility. She will be forever missed by her KidsAbility family, but her legacy will continue to live on in the smiles of the children who were able to achieve their dreams because of the impact that she had in their lives.

Kitchener Centre for Autism
Spark! Igniting Potential
This collaborative and innovative space hosts KidsAbility’s Intensive Behavioural Intervention (IB) services along with four community partners: Waterloo Region Family Network, Autism Services Waterloo Region, Facile and Extend-a-Family. Through collaboration we are able to better serve our families through a centralized support system.
With an increase in annual funding of $187,500 from the province, and funding through our donors, KidsAbility launched a new program called Spark!. This program provides brief and rapid intervention to children with mild to moderate needs who otherwise may have aged out of the system as they waited for service. Our travelling Spark! team across Waterloo Region and Guelph-Wellington provided 485 visits and helped to move 293 children off the waiting list and on their way to success.

Building a Community of Knowledge
Through the Centre of Excellence, in partnership with Scotiabank Group, we continued the conversations around autism spectrum disorder and fetal alcohol spectrum disorder through our annual forums. By bringing together professionals, families and individuals who walk a journey with either ASD or FASD, the forums strive to build a community of knowledge and support.

...thanks to our families! In our community of Guelph-Wellington, KidsAbility is currently serving over 800 children and families. My daughter is one of them. Eloise was born at 23 weeks gestation, weighing only 1 pound, 8 ounces. We spent 168 days in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) at McMaster Hospital. I look back now and wonder how I was able to manage those difficult months. You can only imagine how scared I was to actually bring our daughter home. But then we had our first meeting with KidsAbility. KidsAbility embraced my family. We worried about our daughter’s growth and development. Would she speak? Walk? Read? How would we deal with the residual effects of her extremely premature birth? The team at KidsAbility helped us to teach Eloise to sit up, crawl, feed herself and drink from a cup. They even adapted a tricycle with special foot pedals, so Eloise could enjoy a family bike ride! The support at KidsAbility didn’t stop at Eloise. KidsAbility also embraced me, my husband Matt and our older daughter Lucy. The emotional help and guidance that we received when Eloise was diagnosed with cerebral palsy was extraordinary. I can happily say that Eloise is now a gorgeous, joyful, smart 3-year-old who is a whiz on the iPad and, amazingly, learning to walk independently. We are only one of the families being served by this great organization. KidsAbility provides wonderful services to families in our community and your support will help kids like Eloise to have access to the same treatment options as Eloise, so more families can see more miracles just like her.

For many, it’s the fear of the unknown that strikes fear in their hearts. In the case of Xiaopu and Joseph Fung, that was certainly true when it came to their son, Evan. Born three months premature, he started exhibiting developmental delays and having seizures at an early age. “Naturally, we were apprehensive,” notes Joseph. “But there was also the relief of finally understanding that our concerns weren’t unfounded when he was diagnosed with a rare condition called GLUT1 Deficiency Syndrome.” This disorder, punctuated by movement and speech difficulties, led to Evan’s referral to KidsAbility. With a prescribed Ketogenic diet and the help of KidsAbility’s physiotherapy, occupational therapy and speech therapy services, the Fungs started to notice some remarkable changes. “Evan has progressed by leaps and bounds,” says Xiaopu. “In fact, this past Christmas, at the age of two, he started to walk. It was a fantastic gift!” For Xiaopu and Joseph, they realized that KidsAbility made a “big difference” in their lives. After some discussions, they decided to make a difference in the lives of other children – by providing a generous donation to KidsAbility. “The waiting list was one area we wanted to address,” says Joseph. “We know what it’s like – it can feel like an eternity to get your child assessed and to get therapy. It only seemed right to give back to the agency whose services meant so much to us.” Xiaopu notes, “In our case, the change was night and day. The support for Evan was pivotal and the support for us as parents was just as significant. By donating, it felt good to know that other families were getting support sooner.” Joseph agrees adding, “KidsAbility is one of a few organizations where you can see their work making a lasting and transformational impact. Why wouldn’t we support that?” Indeed, it is that kind of “transformational” moment that underscores the need to donate – for children with special needs, just like Evan.

On March 31, 2014, KidsAbility officially opened the Centre for Autism in Kitchener. This purpose-built space was designed specifically for children with autism. ...thanks to our volunteers! How do you make a difference in your community? That was the question that Susan Wagler asked once her children started going to school full time. After some thought, she decided to leverage her skills as a recreation therapist and volunteer at an organization that made a difference. Fortunately, she chose KidsAbility. As Susan explains, “I wanted to volunteer directly with children that had disabilities. At KidsAbility, I get to work with the same child and class for a full year. I’ve been lucky to be with the same teachers and teacher assistants for six years now! There’s definitely a comfort level there, and I enjoy seeing the progress each child makes.” As for the children, they get to take part in activities that are only possible with the help of individuals willing to donate their time. “The kids really love the swim program,” Susan states. “It’s really fun, but each child needs one volunteer. Without our help, the program wouldn’t run.” Susan’s involvement doesn’t end with her volunteer work. She and her spouse, Brad Carr, also support the organization financially. As she notes, “My husband and I are blessed to be in a position that we can donate. KidsAbility is near and dear to my heart. Personally, I believe it’s important for people in the community to give in case a family member or friend needs these services in the future.” Looking ahead, Susan can’t imagine her life without KidsAbility. “I will volunteer as long as I can,” she says. “I love the smiles on the kids’ faces and the feeling that, through my volunteer work and donations, I’m really helping out. A simple hug from a child shows me that I’m appreciated – and that’s perhaps one of the greatest rewards I’ve ever received.”

An Eventful Year! Once again this year, many generous groups and organizations in our community hosted fundraising events in support of KidsAbility. Without your dedication, we wouldn’t be able to provide the many services that children with special needs – and their families – have come to rely on. Thank you for another eventful year that exemplified the spirit of giving. The Tim Hortons Smile Cookie Campaign brought a smile to children and youth with special needs once again this year after $103,320 was raised! KidsAbility Foundation would like to thank all of the Tim Hortons owners, their staff, volunteers and customers throughout Kitchener-Waterloo for their ongoing support of our children. The 27th Annual Cambridge Times Rotary Classic Run raced to an astounding finish, garnering $70,000 in donations for KidsAbility Foundation. The Secret Garden Tea in Guelph was the perfect combination of sophistication and elegance – all in support of KidsAbility. Featuring high tea and decadent desserts, the event was a socialite’s dream! Members of the Guelph Secret Garden High Tea committee gather for a group photo to celebrate another successful year of fundraising in support of the children and youth at KidsAbility.
Grainharvest Breadhouse, a local artisan bakery, donates 10 percent of its pretzel sales to KidsAbility Foundation. To date, they’ve generated $2,768. The spirit of Christmas rose to new heights this year as Nicole Guse, in association with Knox Waterloo, hosted The Sounds of Christmas in support of KidsAbility that brought in $20,382. The annual Rotary Fun Day at KidsAbility in Waterloo brought together families for a day filled with laughter and joy. This free event was made possible through the ongoing support of local Rotarians in Kitchener and Waterloo.
Colonial Cookies employees delivered a cheque for $28,992 to KidsAbility. Staff donations – matched by their employer – helped generate this incredible sum.
For a small donation to KidsAbility, Grobe Nursery baled a customer’s tree in mesh wrap for easier transport and placement in the home. To date, Grobe Nursery has raised $44,338 for KidsAbility. L-R Perry Grobe, Lisa Talbot and Peter Grobe. The Guelph Fun Run drew a crowd of dedicated participants in support of KidsAbility. All told, this event brought in $33,292 in donations.
Over a four-year period, Curl for a Cause has raised nearly $40,000 for KidsAbility. Thank you to the committee and all participants for your continued support.

Elaine Ormston Outstanding Supporter Butterfly Award
KidsAbility Foundation posthumously honoured Lori Gibson with their highest award: The Elaine Ormston Outstanding Supporter Butterfly Award at the President’s Reception in December. Lori was a passionate supporter of KidsAbility, whose memory will be cherished forever by those she touched with her warmth and compassion. A beloved wife and mother, she was also a dedicated Scotiabank employee and manager. As the chair of the Radiothon, her boundless energy drove the event to record heights. Most importantly, as a tireless advocate, she brought hope to the children and families at KidsAbility.
