INDIVIDUAL CHALLENGES

Right now, the lives of over three million people in the UK are threatened by chronic kidney disease, with kidney disease already a silent epidemic.

Why not take up your own individual challenge?

Kidney Research UK is Britain’s leading charity dedicated to funding medical research into the treatment and prevention of kidney disease and kidney related problems. With the help of our supporters, we intend to do all we can to help save the lives of those affected by kidney disease.

Supporting research aimed at finding better treatments, and ultimately a cure, for kidney failure, Kidney Research UK has over £10.1 million invested in research at any one time.

We award grants to doctors, nurses and researchers across the UK. We also campaign for better patient access to renal services.

If Kidney Research UK can continue to fund lifesaving research into kidney disease, in the hope of finding a cure, then the 7,000* people waiting for a kidney transplant, which is 90% of the UK organ transplant list, may cease to be a statistic.

Kidney Research UK is funded almost entirely by voluntary donations and every contribution makes an impact on our work.

Over 400 people a year take part in their own challenge, raising over £100,000 to help fund research to save lives.

The following pages provide you with details of some of the events you can take part in to help us raise funds to help save lives and give millions of people the chance of a brighter future.

The Kidney Research UK team will help you all the way. You will receive a Kidney Research UK fundraising pack which includes a t-shirt, and our fundraising team will provide support and encouragement throughout your fundraising, ensuring you reach your target.

Places are limited on many of these events, so we recommend you register early to avoid disappointment and set yourself a training goal.

CYCLING Does the idea of cycling through tranquil rural villages and the peaceful countryside roads of England and France appeal to you? Well why not sign up to join us on our fabulous London to Paris Cycle Ride! This event is an absolute delight to take part in.

You will be cycling 300 miles over four days, exploring picturesque and historic towns with ample opportunities to take a break and sample local hospitality and that famous French cuisine. We also have Ride London 100, an exciting new event for 2013 where you will cycle along the London Olympic 2012 route through the streets of London and the beautiful Surrey countryside.

RUNNING Whether you’re looking to take part in your first running event or you’re an experienced runner, we’ll be with you every step of the way. We’ll send you a Kidney Research UK running vest as well as ideas to help with your fundraising. We will also be there with you on the day to cheer you on and give you encouragement when you need it most.

The support I received before, during and after the race was superb!

WALKING Our walking events are fun, sociable occasions for everyone. They will leave you feeling invigorated and each offers a real sense of achievement. Our London Bridges Walk is a great day out, taking in many of London’s landmarks and reaching the summit of Ben Nevis, the highest mountain in Britain, is a truly amazing experience.

OVERSEAS An overseas challenge can be one of the most demanding and rewarding experiences of your life. All you need is a sense of adventure and the desire to do something for a great cause!

China Trek 2013

The breathtaking Kilimanjaro trek guides you up the tranquil Machame route, through lush deep forests, home to spectacular wildlife, stretching up to moorland and glaciers before reaching the Uhuru Peak.

Or trek through the untouched Lares region of Peru, over high mountain passes, green valleys and tranquil mountain lakes.

You will encounter breathtaking views of snowcapped Andean mountains, whilst experiencing Peruvian life first hand.

CHALLENGE Our challenge events are sure to get your adrenaline flowing!

It was the best day of my life, the whole experience was amazing!

Katy, Parachute jump

Imagine the thrill of taking a Parachute Jump as you lean forward from the edge of an open doorway in an aircraft flying at 10,000ft and start to freefall at over 120mph.

Or try one of the British Gas Great Swims.

Each is a one mile open water swim in the UK’s most renowned lakes and docks.

Whether you swim a mile breaststroke chatting to a friend, or crawl your way to a fast time, these are great events for swimmers of all abilities.
