Message from the President and Executive Director What a year, and where to begin. The COVID-19 pandemic has been devastating for everyone but for kidney patients the impacts of this virus have been especially hard.

Many kidney patients are immunocompromised, placing them at a significantly higher risk of severe disease including becoming seriously ill, hospitalized, or even dying from the virus. This was especially concerning for kidney patients who had to travel to hospitals or clinics for their dialysis treatments 3-4 times a week and face increased exposure and outbreaks in some centers. Other patients had their transplant surgeries delayed as the country went into lockdown last March. As the weeks turned into months and people continued to isolate, the community as a whole felt the impacts of this virus on their mental health.

While it is hard to detail the unimaginable stress and hardship over the past year within the kidney population and beyond, we owe a huge debt of gratitude to all the health care providers who worked tirelessly and often under insanely stressful conditions to care for our patients.

Thank you is simply not enough to express our sincere appreciation.

There were positives realized from 2020, including the strength, the kindness, and the resilience of our kidney community we discovered as we worked together to support one another in new and remarkable ways during this difficult time.

At the Kidney Foundation the health and safety of our kidney family was our number one priority. A national COVID response team was initiated to support the implementation of public health regulations at the Kidney Foundation. This included how we managed our community outreach, events, and our office procedures, including having staff work mainly from home.

Together we worked to adapt to the ever-changing environment and develop new strategies to achieve our goals and live our mission.

We are proud that our support to kidney patients remained strong in 2020 as we continued to deliver our core programs and services.

We also launched a YouTube channel, with kidney health information, including a special information series on COVID-19.

Understanding how COVID-19 is impacting our kidney community was important. We conducted a survey amongst kidney patients, caregivers, and health care providers and this information helped to inform program development and new initiatives to support the kidney community.

We launched a Kidney Community Calls initiative, training volunteers and staff to reach out to kidney patients with friendly check-in telephone calls. Members of our kidney community also established an online meeting place – Kidney Friends Circle - whereby patients, caregivers, family members and friends of those living with kidney disease including the professionals who care for us, can come together to share lived experiences, learn about upcoming events, opportunities to get involved, and more.

The pandemic created uncertainty on many fronts including financial uncertainty. We were fortunate our 2020 Kidney Gala took place just before COVID-19 put the country in lockdown. The Kidney Foundation also accessed the Canadian Emergency Wage Subsidy funds. Together with cost containment measures and diversified revenue streams, we were able to mitigate the financial impacts of COVID-19.

The Foundation pivoted to take advantage of virtual platforms to secure revenue including our first-ever virtual Kidney Walk and Kidney March. We were also very successful in securing COVID-specific grant funding and established a COVID-Response Funding stream.

Above all, our volunteers, donors and supporters have always been the rock in our Foundation, but this year you stepped up in ways like never before. Thank you for your unwavering kindness and generosity. While the battle against this virus still rages on, we know that as a community we are strong, we are resilient, resilient and we can count on each other.

Provide Many Touchpoints of Care to Northern BC Family There are many BC & Yukon Branch programs and services that provide guidance and assistance to people living with kidney disease, their families, and those who are potential living donors.

In January 2020, two new pilot programs were launched – Dental Assistance and Northern Travel. The latter was established to specifically assist kidney patients living in the north with expenses related to travel to Prince George for home dialysis training. Kidney patient, Darek Klassen, benefited from the Northern Travel Pilot Project and several other programs and services throughout his journey with kidney disease.

In February 2020, Darek, who lives in Fraser Lake, was scheduled to go to Prince George for peritoneal dialysis (PD) training but soon after, all plans were put on hold due to COVID-19 being declared a pandemic. Darek still required treatment so in response, Darek was sent $500 worth of gas cards through the Short Term Financial Assistance Program to support his need to travel to Prince George three times a week for hemodialysis. When PD Training restarted in May at the Prince George PD Clinic, the Branch provided Darek with gas cards and covered accommodation costs through the Northern Travel Program.

Later in the year, Darek was required to travel to Vancouver for this pre-transplant appointment. Another gas card was given to help get Darek from Fraser Lake to Prince George (where he then took a flight to Vancouver).

The Branch was more than happy to help Darek and his family once again when he was set to receive a kidney transplant in Vancouver during March 2021. He was able to move into one of our Kidney Suites at Chelsea Tower.

NANAIMO KIDNEY CONDO Home dialysis is an important option for kidney patients but does require training. For those patients who live in the north or

west part of Vancouver Island, the Nanaimo Regional General Hospital is the closest place offering home dialysis training. For some patients the cost to stay Nanaimo can be a financial barrier, even preventing some from pursuing home dialysis as an option. To help address this issue, the BC and Yukon Branch together with the Vancouver Island Kidney Patients’ Association (VIKPA) and Vancouver Island Heath Authority (VIHA) opened the Nanaimo Kidney Condo in 2019.

The condo provides free, safe accommodation to kidney patients who may need to stay in Nanaimo from 1-6 weeks for training, enabling these patients equal access to health care options. In 2020, the Kidney Condo gave a temporary home to 30 kidney patients.

BRANCH SURVEYS KIDNEY COMMUNITY About COVID-19 and Its Impacts To help the Kidney Foundation better understand the needs of those we serve, a survey was conducted asking how COVID-19 impacted patient and caregivers’ lives; how our community is coping and accessing services; and what resources/tools are needed. Over 850 surveys were completed by kidney patients, caregivers and health care professionals. This data helps inform current and future programs.

HERE ARE A FEW HIGHLIGHTS

Patients and caregivers responded that since COVID-19 they: • are coping, but there is a significant increase in stress and worry for family and friends.

• feel less safe accessing care for themselves/loved ones but do embrace virtual care medical appointments.

• feel isolated at times with a need for more connection and peer support.

• expressed a strong desire for continued access to customized kidney information via online resources and tools.

KIDNEY WALK Goes Virtual

and Kidney Community Steps Up in Big Way with Their Support

In 2020, to help kidney patients’ emotional and mental well being during the pandemic, we developed Kidney Community Calls.

Volunteers and kidney team members connected with patients through friendly, confidential, check- in phone calls.

The primary purpose of these calls was to ask patients how they are doing, how they are coping, and to provide a warm and friendly voice and a listening ear.

Kam Kang, one of the many kidney patients who received a call had this to say: “I was really surprised when I got a call [from a volunteer]. It was really good to hear a familiar voice, a happy voice. The call made a difference for me even after it was over. I was invigorated and reached out to some of my fellow kidney patients and we had a group Zoom call all together.”

To support all federal, provincial and territorial health directives related to the COVID-19 pandemic, Kidney Walk went virtual in 2020.

Participants were encouraged to fundraise as usual and then join us online for “Walk the Block” and walk in their communities on June 7, 2020. The BC & Yukon Branch teamed up with Branches in Alberta, The Territories, and Saskatchewan in an act of solidarity to show our kidney and transplant community that we’ve got their backs!

Over 648 people from across Western Canada registered (350 from BC and The Yukon) and hundreds joined us online to watch our “Walk the Block” video. Although we did not hold our traditional community gatherings, you continued to support our kidney community by fundraising like never before, showing the strength, dedication and resilience of our kidney community!

How wonderful it is to just be able to connect with some of those people and let them know that someone is thinking of them.”

We are happy to report that almost $400,000 has been raised across Western Canada.

KIDNEY MARCHERS Commitment to the

Kidney Community in 2020 as Strong as Ever

Despite the challenges of COVID-19, nothing stopped our 33 Kidney Marchers here in BC and the Yukon who raised an amazing $52,000 to fund kidney research, support patient programs and organ donation initiatives. Kidney March is a 3-day, 100 km event, held annually in the foothills of Calgary. It provides Marchers and Crew with a life-changing experience and supports them in their journey to walk the farthest they have ever walked and to raise the most they could possibly raise, to improve the lives of those affected with kidney disease. In 2020, Kidney March turned to a virtual and community-based event held over two months.

First-time Kidney Marcher, Brenda Brown, who joined the BeCauseYuKan team in 2020, had this to say: “I felt very proud to walk the 100 km locally, it was an awesome experience. I am a kidney transplant warrior and it felt really good to know that I could still do something important with my team – to make a difference for other kidney patients.” Brenda is the President of the Canadian Transplant Association, and received a kidney transplant in 2013.

KIDNEY FRIENDS CIRCLE Fosters a Vibrant Virtual Community Late 2020 saw the creation of a Facebook group - Kidney Friends Circle – an online meeting place where patients, caregivers, family members and friends of those living with kidney disease,including the professionals who care for us can come together. This space – established by the kidney community for the kidney community – is a place to share lived experiences, stories, open discussions, make connections, post kidney related events and ways to get involved.

Monthly Kidney Friends Circle Zoom meetings were established with the December meeting featuring kidney friendly foods and healthy coping tips for the holidays.

Other Zoom meetings on Children, Families and Genetic Kidney Diseases, rounded out the year with more scheduled for 2021. Join the Kidney Friends Circle.

PLUGGED IN Celebrates 100th Episode and Launches YouTube Channel Four years ago, the Branch launched a Kidney Health TV show, PLUGGED IN, which began airing on SHAW TV in communities across BC. Since then, the show has continued to grow and expand over the years, with 2 shows a month on SHAW airing upwards of 14 times a week and 1 show a month on SHAW Multicultural, reaching many “at-risk” groups for kidney disease. The show also airs on SHAW Spotlight nationally – 3 times a day – everyday.

Like all outreach activities and events at the Branch in 2020, PLUGGED IN also adapted its interview format to ZOOM to accommodate COVID-19 regulations, which enabled the Branch to continue to produce kidney health educational content throughout the year.

New opportunities to expand the PLUGGED IN platform nationally is in the works for 2021.

In 2020, PLUGGED IN celebrated its 100th episode. Prior to COVID-19 hitting Canada, hosts, former guests, staff, Board members, show sponsors, sports personalities and even paparazzi gathered together to commemorate this milestone. Also celebrated that night was the official launch of a Kidney PLUGGED IN YouTube channel. A special thank you to Otsuka for all their support of PLUGGED IN since it first kicked off in 2016.

PLUGGED IN produced a 3-part Research Series with Dr. Peter Nickerson, Dr. Caroline LaMarche and Dr. James Lan. Dr. Lan highlighted his “Bench to Bed” Kidney Foundation funded 3-year research project. Dr. Lan’s interview aired in both English and Mandarin.

Could You Lose 80% of Something and NOT Notice?

The BC and Yukon Branch joined forces with BC Renal to launch a memorable Kidney Health Month online campaign throughout the month of March, called Could You Lose 80% of Something and NOT Notice? The campaign used humour to introduce a serious issue and drive home the message you can lose 80% of your kidney function and NOT even notice it. Aimed at reaching the public, with a focus on high-risk populations for kidney disease, including Asian, South Asian and Indigenous individuals, the goal was to encourage people to learn more about their kidney health through a simple and quick kidney health self-assessment and to talk to their doctor if they were at risk for kidney disease.

BC Renal stepped in to support kidney patients and our COVID-19 response through a unique collaboration – selling limited-edition, one-of-a-kind face masks with all proceeds going to our Branch!

Each thoughtfully selected symbol on the mask represented something meaningful pertaining to kidney disease, kidney research, and of course – kidney patients.

In 2020, a total of $15,000 was raised through this timely and helpful fundraiser with sales continuing into 2021.

Sea of Green Marks GREEN SHIRT DAY Day on April 7th Marking its second anniversary, Green Shirt Day is a day dedicated to raising organ donor awareness and registration by the generous organ donation act of Logan Boulet, one of the sixteen who lost their lives in the Humboldt Broncos bus crash of April 2018.

This year the Kidney Foundation proudly became a community partner of Green Shirt Day, and engaged its kidney family across the country to participate in the campaign for a second year and wear green on April 7th.

Kidney Car has provided a quick and simple way to dispose of unwanted vehicles for over 25 years! In 2020, the donation process became contactless, and we are happy to report that once again:

Kidney Car was the biggest source of revenue for The Foundation.

In fact, $2.111 million was raised for the BC & Yukon Branch and 5,364 cars were donated!

Abbotsford Fire Rescue Service, Annick Lim Sid Adams & family, Chinese Renal Association

And participate YOU did! Despite COVID-19, Green Shirt Day moved online and the kidney community leveraged social media to create a sea of green from coast to coast. Closer to home, the Abbotsford Fire Rescue Service (AFRS) reached out to the Branch wanting to do their part. Not only did all 100 of their firefighters register their wishes for organ donation, but the AFRS also issued a challenge to all firefighters and other first responders in BC to register as organ donors.

KIDNEY GALA Raises Almost $300,000

to Support Kidney Patients and Research The 8th annual Kidney Gala (presented by AG Hair) shimmied into the JW Marriot Parq Vancouver on March 6, 2020. Guests were swept back to the 1920’s for a glamorous, glitzy, Gatsby-style evening.

Opening the evening was internationally respected nephrologist and researcher and honorary gala chair, Dr. Adeera Levin. Guests were delighted by our fabulous hosts, Fred Lee (Vancouver’s “Man about Town”) and Sophie Lui (Global News anchor) and inspired by our incredible speakers. Sussanne Skidmore, living kidney donor and Secretary Treasurer of the BC Federation of Labour; Stephen Gillis, beloved hockey coach and kidney transplant recipient; and Michael Teigen, actor and Stephen’s kidney donor; all shared their personal stories and insight on kidney disease and organ donation.

Entertainment included a Gatsby Garden Party cocktail hour, fabulous silent auction, Restaurant Row, Wine Wall, professional portrait studio from Photos for Kidneys, and a speakeasy themed after-party with casino style games and live entertainment from the Speakeasy Sweeties.

Almost $300K was raised to support worldclass innovative kidney research and program support services for kidney patients across BC & The Yukon. Thank you to our Gala supporters!

BRANCH PRESENTS TO SELECT STANDING COMMITTEE on Finance and Government Services The Branch continued its advocacy efforts on behalf of kidney patients.

Part of this work included making a presentation to the Select Standing Committee on Finance and Government Services as part of the BC Ministry of Finance budget public consultation process. This provided an opportunity to introduce the Foundation to members of the

Government and the Official Opposition and to highlight challenges faced by kidney patients a result of COVID-19.
